"We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror," she described. While he knew he was handsome, Cruise was self-conscious about his height . "He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit," she said.

But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. Tom Cruise's looks drew unwanted public attention in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game, Page Six reported. The "Mission Impossible" star's face looked swollen, leading many to wonder whether Cruise had had cosmetics procedures done or gained weight. Social media users took to Twitter to mock his appearance, drawing comparisons to Norm MacDonald, who had recently died . "Norm macdonald being reincarnated into tom cruise is one of his best bits ever," one wrote .

However, many others defended Cruise while criticizing the normalization of online body-shaming. PETA claims to have video footage that shows the bears being kept in too-small cages and not being given enough water. The group wants to see the bears cared for in a zoo on the U.S. mainland and is offering to pay the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the cost of relocating the bears. ”Polar bears are intelligent animals who are specially adapted to freezing weather conditions,” McGregor writes. ”To imagine their current plight with a tropical circus, layer on your heaviest winter clothing and spend all day outside on a hot, steamy day.” Sounds unbearable….

Cruise is undeniably one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors, but his good looks and contagious smile is another reason he rules the hearts of millions.

However, there is a story behind his picture-perfect smile. The actor spent years to find the right dental solution for the front tooth, perhaps popularly known as the  “middle tooth.”  

Many fans have noticed that his front right tooth is a bit out of place. In fact, if you have a closer look at his old movies and portraits, the pictures speak for themselves.

In 2001, just after his breakup with Nicole Kidman, the  Mission Impossible  star got braces to address an overbite and dental misalignment.

Cruise proudly flaunted his  invisible braces  with ceramic brackets while walking the red carpet of  Minority Repor t Premiere’ in 2002. The artist’s then publicist Pat Kingsley revealed Cruise would wear an orthodontic device for a year. 

Even before that, during the shooting of  The Outsiders  (1983), where he played the role of Steve Randle, the then 21-year-old Cruise removed the cap from one of the front teeth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match. 

The Dental Imperfection Never Shook His Confidence

Despite the dental flaw, the 58-year-old never lacked conviction. During his initial days as a Hollywood hero, Cruise mentioned why he happily embraced his newly found sex symbol status.

In a 1985 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he explained that the tag neither bothered him, nor did he particularly like it.

It doesn’t bother me at all. I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.

The Transformation 

The maverick actor started his career in 1982 with his genetically gifted looks and not-so-perfect smile. According to reports, he initially opted for teeth whitening for his discoloration and alignment procedures.

However, the  Mission Impossible  star never opened up about his dental transformation. Many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers apart from braces.  Some dentists also suggested that Cruise might have an implant-supported ceramic crown in the area where he lost his tooth.

We know that was the case because reportedly, he removed the “cap” (another name for dental crown ) from one of his front teeth (probably the one on the right) to add to his character of Steve Randle in The Outsiders . 

It is believed that his teeth were badly damaged as a result of a sports injury involving a hockey puck. The actor did play hockey when he was young, so it’s possible that he knocked his teeth out as a result of that. 

A missing tooth on the left side of his upper jaw is also the reason why he has the “middle tooth.” His teeth have shifted to the left, which is why his dental midline is also to the left.

This is actually something that happens when people are missing their teeth. The surrounding teeth shift into the space left behind, which can make them misaligned and crooked.

There are also some other stories about Tom Cruise’s teeth. One involves the former editor-in-chief of The New York Post, Col Allan. Apparently, Tom Cruise’s front teeth fell out when he was having drinks with the journalist. 

Allan recounts being “speechless” because of the incident.

At that time, Cruise told Allan that he had lost his teeth after one of his children’s heels struck them while he was playing with them. While the actor had reportedly “pleaded” that the information not be made public, that, unfortunately, is not the case anymore.  

How Did Tom Cruise Fix His Teeth?

It is believed that the Mission Impossible star had crowns on his teeth. However, it is possible for people to get both crowns and veneers at the same time.

What will suit them better will depend on the condition of their teeth, their location and the severity of their problem. But veneers can also effectively hide the teeth, although it only covers their front surface. 

Other than that, Tom Cruise may also have had a teeth whitening procedure.

Despite him having a “unitooth” and not the traditionally “perfect” teeth, there are many people who admire his million-dollar smile.

From his pictures, you can see that the brackets on his teeth are transparent. Although there’s something else to see if you closely look at his photos from that time: his gums. They appear even. 

However, if you look at the photos of Tom Cruise’s teeth now, the gum tissue on his left central incisor is more than that on his right central incisor.

The size of the tooth has also changed. The right tooth is bigger than the left one. 

It is possible that the actor had a crown lengthening or gingivectomy procedure in later years.

Some people need these before getting dental crowns. Gingivectomy treatment involves the removal of gum tissue above the tooth so that more of its structure is exposed.

This provides a greater surface area to the crown for bonding and anchorage. It may be the reason why his gum line is not even anymore and why the size of his one tooth is now bigger than before. 

Does Tom Cruise Have T eeth Veneers?

It’s more likely that Tom Cruise has dental crowns instead of veneers. That’s because, unlike crowns, veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth.

And considering how damaged his tooth was, Tom Cruise’s dentist might have also recommended him a crown to protect the underlying tooth (provided it’s still there).

Despite being in the spotlight for more than 40 years, there isn’t much that people know about him. There was a time when people thought that he had a rhinoplasty or nose job.

However, in an interview with Playboy Magazine, he made it clear that it wasn’t the case and “never would” be. 

Did Tom Cruise Seek the Right Dental Procedures?

As mentioned before, Tom Cruise does have a million-dollar smile. His dentists would have tried their best to make what they could out of his situation.

It may not have been possible for him to undergo more invasive and extensive procedures because of the time constraints his career put on him. He has constantly been in the spotlight since the 80s. 

That said, the actor’s midline could have been better if he had had an implant after he had lost his tooth.

The implants would have acted as a substitute for the natural tooth and not allowed the surrounding teeth to shift. Plus, dental implants Turkey would cost him a little.

By 2010 Tom Cruise had created that perfect killer Hollywood smile for himself thanks to the braces. He went for the ceramic braces that match the color of one’s teeth and people loved Tom’s smile when he attended the Jerry Bruckheimer Hand and Footprint Ceremony in May 2010.

A hockey accident.

Long before Tom Cruise became  an ever-bankable action star , he was Steve Randle in  The Outsiders . And, amidst a cast full of fresh-faced brat pack hunks , it’s his unique set of chompers that set the young actor apart.

Cruise was injured in a hockey accident when he was young — hit by a flying puck — which left his front tooth chipped. And when filming The Outsiders , he decided to remove the cap that covered the crack. The result was purposefully unattractive, as Cruise meant to emulate his dirt-poor greaser character. And though The Outsiders was Cruise’s third movie, the 1983 film marked the first noticeable showcase for his unique mouth.

Corrective Procedures

As Tom Cruise’s career progressed, it’s clear that he received some orthodontic treatments. In addition to getting the original chip filled in, his teeth were whitened and straightened. Famously, in 2002, the then-40-year-old donned adult braces at the Minority Report premiere. Twenty years on, it may seem shocking; less noticeable options like Invisalign are now quite common. But for the time, Cruise’s bracket-less upper braces were actually a subtle choice.

Still, even after braces, Cruise’s signature smile was not quite perfect. His midline is off, creating the appearance of a so-called “middle tooth.” In the video above, a doctor from Premier Orthodontics breaks it down.

The average person has seven teeth on each side on each of their midline. But if you count Cruise’s teeth, it’s apparent that he’s missing the second pre-molar on his left side. (That would be the third tooth from the back.) Naturally, then, when Cruise lost his baby tooth the teeth around it would slide in toward that space… resulting in a midline that’s shifted roughly half-a-tooth toward the left.

And it’s not so uncommon — roughly 3% of the population has a missing tooth.

But since Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise, the obvious next question is… Why doesn’t he get it fixed? The man has an estimated net worth of $600 million! But those options would require another, a longer period of more intense braces.

Tom Cruise’s Adult Braces

Open-coiled springs are one option. The small springs could be wedged into the braces, around the missing premolar, to slowly open up space for a dental implant to be added. In all, the process would take around two years. And two years as a metal mouth is a lot for a man who’s bringing in hundreds of millions at the box office — at age 59!

Regardless of the alignment of his teeth, or his missing premolar, one thing is for sure: Tom Cruise has the smile of a movie star.

As the star of his own video game, the pro skateboarder and his corkscrew maneuvers generate more excitement with the junior contingent than Hollywood’s top movie draws, many of whom put in a shift at the story tent. “A Beautiful Mind’s” Jennifer Connelly reads from “The Lorax,” and sometime starship captain Patrick Stewart reads from “Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type.” A newly orthodontured Tom Cruise tries to hold the kiddies rapt with readings from “Where the Wild Things Are” and “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” while that other Cruz --Penelope--looks on. “I’m losing my audience,” he mock-frets, though, needless to say, the adult children (media included) hang onto every word. “Has he left the premises? Beat it, Cruise,” cracks “Everybody Loves Raymond” star Ray Romano, next in the storyteller’s chair with on-screen wife Patricia Heaton. They will endeavor to captivate the children with the tale of “Rosie and Roger” once the Tom-and-Penelope hubbub subsides.

Tom Cruise showed off his beaming smile and perfect pearly whites as he posed at the Producers Guild Awards in LA on Monday night.

But the A-list movie star, now 60, hasn't always had the best smile - sporting crooked teeth in his younger years before getting them fixed. 

Images from his time on the 80s movie The Outsiders showed his far from straight gnashers before having a dental work done.

But over the years he has made sure to curate an impeccable grin to make him film star and red carpet ready.

The cap came straight back over Cruise's teeth in his subsequent movies, and with blockbusters like Risky Business, Top Gun and Cocktail. 

Then after his split from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the Hollywood veteran got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems.

Tom raised eyebrows in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game in San Francisco with a noticeably puffier face.

The father-of-three sparked speculation he had fillers after sporting a fuller face during the LA  Dodgers match.
