The Best Jack Reacher Actor Isn't Tom Cruise Or Alan Ritchson

Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher

I used to read Lee Child's Jack Reacher books when I traveled, burning through a paperback on a long flight. Post-pandemic, I don't find myself in planes that often anymore, but I need still need my regular fix of preposterous action, hard-boiled mystery, and glorious tough guy nonsense. So the world of Reacher, built around a hulking former U.S. Army cop who travels the country as a homeless drifter and solves crimes/snaps necks along the way, now lives in my ears. I've gone full audiobook. Child's famous "frictionless" prose is ideal gym listening — you don't need to concentrate too hard when you're on the treadmill, as the plotting is designed to go down real easy. Jack Reacher books are written to be enjoyed effortlessly by a wide audience, after all. Even a listener who is struggling through mile three of that daily jog can enjoy every twist and turn.

One side effect of bingeing Jack Reacher audiobooks over the past few months — besides annoying my wife with constant recaps of how many arms Reacher has broken — is that I've found my favorite Jack Reacher actor. And it's not Tom Cruise, who played the character in two feature films , and it's not Alan Ritchson, who embodies him in the Prime Video streaming series "Reacher." It's legendary audiobook narrator Dick Hill, an actor of quietly startling range who brings to life everything that makes this character so beloved.

The true voice of Jack Reacher

This isn't a slight against Cruise (underrated; he's too small, yes, but he nails the attitude) or Ritchson (so physically perfect for the role that one imagines he was grown in a lab for the part). I like 'em both. But after having Hill's deep voice in my ears for dozens of hours, letting him guide me through a labyrinth of dark conspiracies and busted kneecaps, it's clear who owns the role. Even Child himself has credited Dick Hill's audiobook performances for creating legions of additional Jack Reacher fans. Hell, I'd go as far as to say a Jack Reacher book read by Dick Hill is the ideal Jack Reacher experience — more than reading the novels, more than seeing the films, and more than binge-watching the TV series.

Dick Hill isn't the only reader to take on the Jack Reacher series (the more recent books have been narrated by Scott Brick and a few of the early novels are read by Johnathan McClain), but his command of character and pacing is unreal. Listening to Dick Hill made me wonder ... is one of my favorite actors of all time an audiobook reader? His "Reacher voice," a Clint Eastwood-tinged growl that fits the laconic character to a T, is burned into my brain. It's great stuff during all of the Reacher books, but it's especially great stuff during the handful of novels written in the first person, where you truly feel like you're having the events relayed to you by Reacher himself. (The fact that Hill works overtime to give every speaking character a unique voice showcases an astonishing range, but I could listen to his Reacher voice go through the phone book.)

An audiobook legend

Dick Hill narrated over 1,000 audiobooks across a stunning career, taking on numerous genres but finding himself a go-to voice for propulsive thriller novels that needed a natural tough guy edge. He died in late 2022 at the age of 74 in Lansing, Michigan, where he was a longtime member of the local theater scene. I know I'll eventually run out of Jack Reacher books read by Dick Hill, and I hope to like the newest readers. But I also know that I plan to dive into the work of Dick Hill beyond the Reacher books. Maybe by next audiobook gym binge will be Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books, which Hill also read.

I think it says something about Hill as an actor, not just a reader, that I plan to follow his work just as much as I plan to follow the writers whose work he brought to life. Audiobook readers are, by design, intended to be invisible. Their work brings another artist to life. The writer is supposed to be the star. But the work of Dick Hill proves that audiobook narration is an art form, a full-on performance, and that the talented folks working in this corner of the industry deserve the same respect we give actors who appear on the big and small screens.

Alan Ritchson Says His Version of Jack Reacher Is More True to the Books Than Tom Cruise's

The actor recently broke down the lengthy audition process for the role, which involved making sure he was as tall and muscular as the character is in Lee Child's novels.

preview for Alan Ritchson | Train Like

In a recent interview on the Inside of You podcast, Ritchson told host Michael Rosenbaum all about the lengthy, competitive auditioning process."They passed on me the first time," he said. "They passed on everybody the first time... There was probably 2,000 other guys."

Several months passed before Ritchson was contacted by the show's new casting director, who asked him to try out again for Reacher . Because this was all happening during the pandemic, Ritchson was submitting all of his auditions remotely, and recalls that the producers actually asked him to strip to the waist and measure his full height on camera so that they could be sure he embodied the physical characteristics of Jack Reacher.

"There are so many cooks in the kitchen, in a good way," he said. "There are so many people who have a vested interest in delivering something that works to the fans."

Ultimately, it took seven or eight different auditions before Ritchson landed the role, at which point he got to work gaining muscle so that book readers who were expecting to see a huge Jack Reacher wouldn't be disappointed, like many were when the Tom Cruise movie came out. Ritchson, for his part, had nothing but good things to say about Cruise's tenure as Reacher, although he acknowledges that he probably fits the character's body type more accurately.

"I only owe Mr Cruise a debt of gratitude for the visibility that he's brought to this role, but there are a lot of people who comment that he's not exactly the size that Reacher should be , and that's a large character in this," he said. "Suffice to say, he also still carried those franchises into hundreds of thousands of dollars without that, so that's a testament to his talent and craft. He's incredible. But, you know, a lot of fans weren't happy, and so there's obviously a level of anxiety from the executives, like 'we don't want to mess this up again.'

Reacher's new look fixes the worst tom cruise casting mistake.

The 2012 adaptation of Lee Child's novel series Jack Reacher made the mistake of casting Tom Cruise. Amazon Prime's new series Reacher fixes this.

The new Reacher series on Amazon Prime finally fixes one of the worst casting mistakes for Tom Cruise . Jack Reacher is, of course, the 2012 film based on the character of Lee Child’s novel series starring Cruise as the titular character. The film has garnered relative success, enough to warrant a sequel in 2016, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back . Unfortunately, the second run for Cruise’s version of the character failed to achieve any significant traction, and his time as the character came to an end, but for some Reacher fans, that couldn't come soon enough.

Jack Reacher , the series by Child, is about an ex-military officer who now spends his time as essentially a nomad, meeting all kinds of trouble in each big city and small village he wanders into. The film with Cruise adapts One Shot , the ninth novel of the series.  Reacher , which is Amazon's television reboot , has plans of adapting one book per season, a considerable feat with the fact that there are a total of twenty-seven books so far in the series. This first season adapts the events of Killing Floor .

Related: Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Was Way More Book Accurate Than You Realized

Other than the release format and pacing of the series, there’s one significant difference in this new version, which fixes a big mistake in the casting of Cruise as Reacher . The character is supposed to be a physically impressive, imposing figure that embodies the military stoicism of his experiences and his current nomadic lifestyle. However, Cruise’s Reacher was unfortunately always too short to exude the intimidation that is needed for the character. That was also something Jack Reacher writer Lee Child himself admitted to. His size is a big aspect of the Reacher character, as is his general aesthetic, and Cruise’s version was simply too polished for someone who describes themselves as a “hobo”. This casting blunder is one of the main reasons why the original films fail to capture the success of the novels.

The new series stars Titans ’ Alan Ritchson in the lead role who, thankfully, is far closer to the novel’s description of Reacher. Based on Ritchson’s previous works, he also has the charisma to pull off this unnerving but very captivating character. In the Reacher trailer so far , he already proves that he fits this role well by exuding a lot of the rough edges and silent threat that is typical of the novels. Ritchson is also still quite young, and there’s a lot of potential for his version of the character to go all the way. Cruise’s age is another mistake in his previous casting that this new series rectifies. With Ritchson being closer to Reacher’s age in the actual novels, the actor can grow alongside the series as it moves on from one book to the next.

While Cruise’s Jack Reacher  was far from terrible, there is a lot of things missing there to truly capture the essence of the character. Reacher is the second try at adapting the novel series to screen, so there’s a lot of pressure to get this version right, especially if Ritchson has to live up to someone like  Tom Cruise, synonymous with stunts and action . Fortunately, there is promise in his portrayal so far, which bodes well for the future of the series.

Alan Ritchson Proves Tom Cruise Was The Worst Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher's side by side

Did the ground just tremble? Yes, it did. That's from the impact of Alan Ritchson stomping his way into another season of "Reacher," Amazon's fantastic adaptation of Lee Child's beloved hero. The first season turned heads and broke limbs last year, and a huge amount of credit goes to Ritchson himself, who's earning a name for himself that's almost as big as his physical frame.

The first season of "Reacher" earned high praise from critics, and  fans were equally as impressed by the TV adaptation of the books . Now, judging by the new trailer for Season 2 of "Reacher," it looks like we're going to get more of the same, with Reacher doing damage in various awesome ways. It's wild, then, to look upon Ritchson kicking in doors in like they're attached to a Fisher-Price children's playhouse, and to remember that there was a time, not long about, when one of the biggest stars in the world was Reacher instead — and he was terrible at it.

Before Ritchson took his first lonely steps down the road as the ex-military policeman with a strict moral code, the iconic Tom Cruise had a crack at it, too. And as we get ready to thrill at another season of Ritchson gracing our screens as the hulking hero, the new trailer only serves as deeper confirmation of just how much Tom Cruise's Reacher was the absolute worst.

Tom Cruise was everything wrong with Jack Reacher (2012)

Look, the last thing we want to do is to throw shade at Tom Cruise. He saved the theater industry , for god's sake. Be that as it may, there was that wild period from 2012 to 2017 where he made some iffy choices.

Along with the Dark Universe-killing "The Mummy," Cruise's turn as Jack Reacher began with a mediocre intro in 2012 and ended in 2016 with the panned sequel, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." It was a franchise that had every chance to flourish on the big screen, but it was hindered by its hero being a star who, for better or worse, had become a stereotype unto himself.

That's because Cruise is — no matter the movie — Cruise. He doesn't play characters anymore, just Cruise in different settings. Just like the line was burned away in a sparkly fashion between Ethan Hunt and Tom Cruise, the same thing happened when Cruise dared to go it alone as the wandering hero of a 28-book series. He'd shifted from one franchise where he could seemingly do anything to another where he could tell what time of day it was just by looking at the sun.

That's not Jack Reacher. As creator Lee Child described on Studio 10 , Reacher is supposed to be a messy character, not another crystal-cut Cruise action hero. "He's got a lot of faults," Child said, "and that's the only way to do it. You've got to present him warts and all, then the audience can relate to him in a realistic way."

Reacher doesn't fit into the Cruise mold. Reacher's a low-level hero, a subdued but powerful figure, solving small-time cases that shouldn't be outshone by the star playing him. Above all, regardless of the writing, a proper Reacher has to be a character that fills the screen — and we mean that in a quite literal way.

When it comes to Jack Reacher, size matters

Movies can get away with miscasting sometimes (see Keanu Reeves as John Constantine: criminal, from a comics loyalty standpoint, but the film still absolutely slaps). Reacher, though, demands a very specific type of actor. The 2012 film's choice to take Child's 6'5" blond titan in a T-shirt and remake him as the 5'7" Tom Cruise was absolutely bonkers. If anything, they'd have been better looking to his eventual "Mission: Impossible: Fallout" co-star Henry Cavill for the gig and throwing in some hair dye for good luck.

Child did throw down some support for Cruise when he was cast, like a good gentleman, even telling Deadline  that "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way." Well, it didn't translate to the film itself. None of Cruise's punching and kicking could ever get him across as the one-man army that Reacher is in the books. Reacher isn't the kind of "Mission: Impossible" hero that elegantly drops over the wall from cables or does athletic leaps. He's the guy who runs straight through things and breaks them down.

This is why Alan Ritchson is the perfect frame-filling pick for Reacher, and has thus far delivered the exact hero we read about on the page. He's an unassuming unit of a guy that, if crossed, becomes the "unstoppable force" Childs originally mapped out. More importantly, like the solo hero himself, Ritchson has far less baggage behind him than Cruise — which works in his favor here, for this particular role, but also signifies that he has a bright future ahead of him.

Alan Ritchson is a hero in the making, and Reacher is his star-making role

When asked by Metro.co.uk about taking over from Tom Cruise with a new iteration of Jack Reacher, Alan Ritchson admitted, "He's an icon, he's a legend. I don't feel worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as his name, he's a true film legend."

That might be the case, but after the first season of "Reacher," there really is no question that the replacement was the right guy for the job. Lee Child even said he thinks Ritchson is "perfect" for the role, and the actor really does manage to bring a realistic edge to the character that Cruise's take just didn't have. It's a balancing act that Ritchson has mastered in the first season, comprising both the farcical and the ferocious. It's a blend that allows us to root for him when he is relentlessly pummeling a group of attackers and then being too big to wear handcuffs when he gets arrested for doing so. These moments allow Ritchson to make the character as his own while simultaneously bringing the Reacher of the books to life.

With luck, we have many more seasons of "Reacher" ahead, and with even more luck, this role will pave the way for Ritchson to get even more roles that show off his acting talents. The impact of "Reacher" has already kicked in enough to earn him a part in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, which saw him holding his own with the likes of Jason Momoa and Vin Diesel. Perhaps such appearances will draw more audiences back to "Reacher," and in turn make Ritchson into an icon in his own right. Take that, Tom.

The Many Reasons the Jack Reacher Franchise Failed To Return

The unstoppable force seems to have cinematically stopped.

The Big Picture

  • Jack Reacher was a solid film, but the sequel fell short, leading to doubts about a third installment in the franchise.
  • The films offer a different, darker side to Tom Cruise's action hero persona, with more grounded action and violent combat scenes.
  • Despite lukewarm reception, a larger framed actor was cast in the Amazon Prime series, Reacher , which found success with fans and critics.

In the last couple decades, Tom Cruise has cemented himself as one of the most prolific and prestigious action movie leads, with major success in the Mission: Impossible franchise, a Top Gun sequel turned global sensation, and a few beloved one offs like Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow . But he does have one franchise which seems to have been left behind; Jack Reacher .

The movie was followed by a sequel, this time reuniting Cruise with The Last Samurai director Edward Zwick . Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was a step-down critically and commercially, a disappointing result after a four-year wait. The sequel was released in 2017, and talk of a third movie gradually fell by the wayside as years went by.

Jack Reacher

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.

'Jack Reacher' Solidified the Partnership Between Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise

McQuarrie and Cruise have been creatively inseperable since they first worked together on Valkyrie. McQuarrie was pivotal in retooling Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol into the major success that it was, and has gone on to bring that franchise to unbelievable heights (literally) while also writing and producing nearly everything Cruise has done since 2008.

But the first movie McQuarrie actually directed for Cruise was Jack Reacher , which was released to positive critical reception and a solid box office intake. This first installment follows Reacher being pulled into the criminal investigation and defense of a military sniper who may have perpetrated a mass shooting, eventually finding a much larger conspiracy at play. McQuarrie did not stay on as director for the sequel, but he still maintained a production credit on the film.

'Jack Reacher' Distinguished Itself From Tom Cruise's Other Action Roles

The Jack Reacher films are not often a central point of reference for what Cruise can do as an action hero, but they do offer a different version of Cruise. It would be easy for this team to essentially re-skin Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt character into a different world and put little effort into distinguishing the character of Reacher. This is not the route they take, as these films are tonally and stylistically different, and Cruise does put in the work to make sure that Reacher doesn't feel like a carbon copy of Ethan Hunt, Maverick, or any of his other iconic roles.

The Jack Reacher series offered Cruise a chance to play a little darker, as these films do not maintain the playful tone of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Reacher is a more world-weary, dejected character. The films feel more violent, with the combat being depicted in a fashion which is more brutal than Cruise's typical register.

I Don't Think You Understand How Big Jack Reacher Actually Is

The tonal difference, and the reliance on more low-stakes, grounded action compared to the massive setpieces Cruise usually dazzles with, stand to make Jack Reacher worth watching, and the story, at least for the first film, is quite gripping . The villain, portrayed in a brilliantly wicked performance by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog . You also get a great performance from Rosamund Pike as a defense attorney who is unwittingly roped into the plot. With a crew of talented actors working under the guidance of McQuarrie, a gifted action filmmaker, it is hard to go wrong with the first Jack Reacher film.

What Happened After 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back?'

Despite the first movie going over relatively well, it was not received as warmly by longtime fans of the book series. Some fans took issue with Cruise feeling miscast for the 6'5" tank of a man that Reacher was consistently written as. Child spoke of this around the release of the first film, explaining that "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way." This speaks to the strength of Cruise's action movie prowess, his ability to sell you on the notion that he really can do anything, but for some fans it still wasn't enough.

Child did eventually relent, agreeing that Reacher should be played by a larger framed actor, and their wishes were fulfilled when Alan Ritchson stepped into the role for the Amazon Prime series, Reacher . The series adaptation has been a hit with fans and critics, and a third season is currently in production . The success of the Ritchson-led series, which McQuarrie is an executive producer on, seems to have filled in the gaps that fans and critics noted in the film adaptation.

When the second film was relatively much less successful, these issues were harder to look past for many Reacher fans. The television series fulfilled what the fanbase wanted out of that story adapted to the screen, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back remains one of the few unfortunate misfires in Cruise's impressive action resume.

Will There Be a Third 'Jack Reacher' Film?

While McQuarrie spoke of the possibility of a third film in the last few years, it seems to have landed fairly low on their list of priorities. This is not surprising considering McQuarrie and Cruise are in the midst of what may be the final stretch of the Mission: Impossible franchise while also juggling how they might move forward with Maverick after the massive global sensation that was the Top Gun sequel.

Cruise is also rumored to be interested in more auteur driven projects, throwing back to his earlier roles in films like Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia and Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut . That speculation is corroborated by the recent news that he will star in the upcoming Alejandro G. Iñárritu film , his first non-franchise role in years. He has also been circling a mysterious project with Doug Liman, and in addition to that, Edge of Tomorrow sequel talks are occurring . Taking all of this into consideration, Cruise may have a busy schedule these next few years, and with the lukewarm response to his outing as Reacher, it feels less likely that he'd return to this character for a third film. So the Cruise-era Reacher fans may have to settle for nothing more than a double feature, but at least there will be no shortage of Tom Cruise or Jack Reacher gracing our screens in the next few years , just not as one entity.

Jack Reacher is available to stream on Paramount Plus in the U.S.

How tall is Alan Ritchson? Jack Reacher FINALLY played by actor tall enough (apologies to Tom Cruise

GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA: Alan Ritchson, standing at an impressive 6 feet 5 inches (195.58 cm), takes on the titular character in Amazon Prime Video's 'Reacher', garnering praises for getting various aspects right, particularly in Ritchson's portrayal, earning positive reviews from trailers and first looks.

A notable point of relief for Jack Reacher fans is the accurate depiction of the character's height, a departure from the portrayal by Tom Cruise, who is 5 ft 7 inches (170 cm).

Ritchson aligns with Reacher's specified height of 6ft 5 inches (195.58 cm), reassuring fans of the character's faithful representation in the reboot.

While Cruise's first outing as Jack Reacher was successful at the box office, it received mixed reviews and the second one earned major criticism for the plot.

The height was a major issue, something that even the author of the books, Lee Child shared his two cents about.

Reportedly in 2018, Lee admitted that they are looking for someone much bigger in size for the role.

“I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun,” Lee opined.

He continued, "But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important, and it’s a big component of who he is".

"The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,” Lee added.

It is a no-brainer that Cruise has carved a name for himself as one of Hollywood's bonafide action stars with major hits such as 'Edge of Tomorrow' and the cult 'Misson: Impossible' series.

However, it was Lee’s decision to abandon him as the lead and reboot the series altogether.

"There won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise," said the author. "We’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that."

Now in 2022, Ritchson is the new Reacher.

What is the plot of 'Reacher'?

The series follows Reacher, a veteran military police investigator who has just recently entered civilian life.

He's best described as a drifter with minimal supplies as he explores the country he once served.

He arrives in the town of Margrave, where he finds the department grappling with its first homicide in 20 years.

The official synopsis reads: "When retired Military Police Officer Jack Reacher is arrested for a murder he did not commit, he finds himself in the middle of a deadly conspiracy full of dirty cops, shady businessmen, and scheming politicians."

"With nothing but his wits, he must figure out what is happening in Margrave, Georgia".

He graduated from Niceville High School in 2001 and secured a full music scholarship. Ritchson attended Okaloosa Walton Community College from 1999 to 2003, graduating with an Associate of Arts degree, where he was actively involved in the Fine Arts division's Soundsations and Madrigal Singers.

Alan Ritchson's height compared to wife Catherine Ritchson

Alan Ritchson and Catherine Ritchson, high school sweethearts who have celebrated more than 15 years of marriage, share a notable height difference with Alan standing tall at 6ft and 5 inches (195.58 cm), while Catherine's height being 5ft and 7 inches (170 cm).

The 'Reacher' star met his wife Catherine when they were in high school, at ballet. Ritchson, who was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, resides in Florida with Catherine and their three sons Calem,10, Edan, 8, and Amory, 6.

Alan Ritchson’s height comparison with other actors

Other franchises also have needed tall actors as per the fictional heroes' canon heights, be it 'Aquaman' or 'Thor'. So how does Ritchson stack up against other heroes?

Alan Ritchson's height compared to 'Aquaman' actors

Alan Ritchson's height of 6ft 5 inches (196 cm) is considerably taller than 'Aquaman' actors like Jason Mamoa who stands 6ft 4 inches (193 cm) tall; Willem Dafoe, who's 5ft 7 inches (170.2 cm); Patrick Wilson at 5ft 11 ½ inches (181.6 cm), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II standing tall at 6ft 1 ¾ inches (187.3 cm).

Alan Ritchson height compared to fellow 'Smallville' stars

Alan Ritchson height compared to 'Thor' actor Chris Hemsworth

Unlike Ritchson, who was cast as Jack Reacher for his height, Chris Hemsworth almost lost the 'Thor' part because of his height. According to MCU canon, the God of Thunder is 6 feet 6 inches, while Hemsworth is 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m). Ritchson is closer to Thor's canon height, at 6 feet 5 inches, making him two inches taller than Hemsworth.

Why is Jack Reacher's height such a big deal?

Lee Child described Jack Reacher as a tall and imposing figure, standing around 6ft 5 inches (196 cm). It comes in handy especially since his physicality contributes to his ability to handle physical confrontations.

Alan Ritchson's height is also 6ft 5 inches (196 cm), matching Reacher's height in the books. However, previous versions of Jack Reacher, for eg, Tom Cruise's portrayal was panned because the actor's height did not match that of the character in the books.

Why did Tom Cruise pull out of Jack Reacher franchise?

Lee Child’s 'Jack Reacher' novels were adapted into two films starring Tom Cruise. When asked about why Cruise wasn't playing the titular character anymore, Child told 'The Sunday Times' in an interview that "Cruise is too old for the action genre and should think about getting more into character acting."

However, part of the reason the actor no longer appeared in the movie's sequels was because the Child also to some extent wanted to honor the readers' complaints that Cruise was not a true reflection of the guy he described in his books.

Cruise hopped onto making the 'Mission Impossible' seventh and eight installment and did not have time to mope around about leaving the role of Reacher. Let's explore Alan Ritchson's versatile roles in other movies.

Why Tom Cruise Didn't Work as Jack Reacher

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars in the world and has been a constant for audiences, having hit films for four decades. Breaking out in the 1980s with films like Risky Business , Top Gun , and Days of Thunder , Cruise transitioned into the 90s by working with some of the best directors of all time, with Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut , Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia , Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible , and Steven Spielberg's Minority Report cementing him as one of the most dedicated actors alive.

His latest film, Top Gun: Maverick , was the surprise hit of the 2022 summer and became his highest-grossing film of all time and the first time the actor made a movie to cross $1 billion at the box office worldwide. Last year, the actor released the seventh Mission Impossible film, and he is already shooting the eighth film the popular franchise, one that has been going on since 1996. However, one franchise that Cruise tried his best to launch, Jack Reacher , just never quite clicked.

Update January 17, 2024: This article has been updated following Reacher season 2 with more information on how the series has become a hit moving beyond Tom Cruise.

The Attempted Jack Reacher Franchise

Created by author Lee Child in 1997, the Jack Reacher character has been the focus of over 28 novels. The last one, The Secret, was released less than three months ago, and the next entry, In Too Deep , will hit bookshelves in October 2024. In 2012, Cruise starred in Jack Reacher , which was based on the ninth novel, One Shot . The film received positive reviews and performed somewhat decently at the box office when it was released during the holiday season, grossing $80 million domestically and $218 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.

The film was meant to become a franchise starter, but it took over four years for Paramount Pictures to make a sequel. In 2016, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opened in theaters and performed far lower than the previous film, with $58.7 million domestically and $162 million worldwide. That was $56 million less than its predecessor while also having a bigger budget, putting a nail in the coffin for the film series. The next year, another attempted Tom Cruise movie franchise would fall flat with the 2017 film The Mummy.

Since then, the Jack Reacher franchise has been given new life with a television show titled Reacher on Amazon Prime Video starring Alan Ritchson in the lead role. Yet one would imagine a movie star like Tom Cruise, who has headlined some of the biggest movies of all time, should have been able to take this book series and turn it into a popular film franchise. Why did it not work? A combination of Cruise's own star power hurting the project and the source material actively working against him might have been the downfall of this potential franchise.

Tom Cruise is Not Like the Books' Jack Reacher

One of the biggest contentions with Cruise's casting among fans of the book series was the star's physical appearance. In the novels, the character of Jack Reacher is described as 6 ft 5, almost a whole foot taller than Tom Cruise, who stands at 5 ft 7. The series' author defended the casting choice at the time, citing that it would be difficult to find an actor to fit Reacher's described height in the book (worth noting that Dwayne Johnson was in the running for the role, and he is the exact height as the book's character and current Reacher actor Richson is 6 ft 2 ). The author explained that the height was a way to characterize Jack Reacher as an unstoppable force, but the casting of Cruise was meant to play off the actor's movie star persona as an impossible man of action audiences have seen do crazy stunts for years.

Related: Will Reacher's Popularity Change the Perception of Media Masculinity?

While fidelity to the source material is respectable, it is not always the most important thing. After all, Hugh Jackman is much taller than the comic book version of Wolverine, and audiences all over the world love his version of the character just as much as the comics. Cruise himself is no stranger to not being the fan's choice for a role, as author Anne Rice was famously not happy with Cruise's casting as Lestat in 1994's Interview With A Vampire , and only changed her mind after watching the film. However, for a role like Jack Reacher, Cruise felt more like stunt casting to get a famous action star rather than finding the right actor for the role.

Tom Cruise's Star Power Made it Seem Like a Redundant Franchise

Cruise's star power, and the way Jack Reacher attempted to cash in on it, might have been one element that hurt the movie in the long run. While Tom Cruise has had a long and storied career since late 2000, the actor has mainly been defined by action roles and, in particular, the Mission: Impossible film series. That is very much Tom Cruise's franchise, and any other major action film Cruise finds himself in the lead role of will draw a comparison. Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible have many different comparisons, as both installments of Jack Reacher were released the year after a Mission: Impossible film (and were much weaker). Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie eventually moved over to the Mission: Impossible movie series to direct Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , Mission: Impossible - Fallout , and Mission: Impossible 7 - Dead Reckoning Part 1 and 2 .

Related: Mission: Impossible: Tom Cruise's 5 Best Stunts in the Franchise, Ranked

While going for a different type of action film (and perhaps a franchise Cruise was setting up to do after he became too old for the death-defying stunts of Mission: Impossible ), audiences looked at Jack Reacher as a smaller-scale and cheaper version of a big-budget Tom Cruise action film . The franchises were different but not different enough to general audiences that Jack Reacher wouldn't look like a knock-off franchise.

Source Material Works Better As A Television Series

One of the biggest aspects of the failure of the Jack Reacher film series has less to do with Cruise and instead to do with the medium in which they chose to tell it. Jack Reacher is a 28-book series, with no signs of slowing down. The narratives are focused on one character and, in many ways, are stand-alone stories. These are airport novels, designed to be thrilling and entertaining reads without being necessarily profound. While this format can work for a film, it works particularly well for a television series, and the audiences for these types of stories tend to be older individuals who watch more television at home.

While the James Bond film franchise has successfully run for over six decades and is based on stand-alone adventures in a long-running book series, most major books that become film franchises tend to be stories with clear beginnings and endings, such as Harry Potter , Lord of the Rings , Twilight , and The Hunger Games .

The central premise of the Jack Reacher novel series sees him traveling across the United States taking odd jobs and getting involved in different cases. While that could be a good premise for a movie franchise, having a built-in new location for each feature film is also ideal for a television series. A person traveling the world and getting into adventures is a hallmark of television, from The Fugitive to The Incredible Hulk to Kung Fu. M ost recently, Supernatural used that format for over 15 years. With over 28 novels to adapt, that gives the creators of Reacher plenty of seasons of television to craft.

In a weird inverse of Mission: Impossible , which originated as a television series but elevated to now being one of the biggest movie franchises because of Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher is a franchise that has likely become more popular when it was adapted as a television series without Tom Cruise.

Reacher's Season 2 Keeps Breaking Viewing Records

Reacher ’s first season was a success by every metric imaginable, but this second season has to be surprising even Amazon, as the show claimed the top spot in all the streaming charts two days after it released the first three episodes and smashed the entire season viewership in those three episodes , getting watched for 1.7 billion minutes, and that was four episodes ago, so the numbers have been going up.

The show's success, as was the one by Suits, proves audiences still love a weekly drama with an episode-of-the-week structure. Yes, every chapter in Reacher advances the season-long mystery, but it's written in digestible bites with a start, a middle, and an end (and some awesome fighting sequences in between), making it an easy watch. It looks like, sometimes, audiences just want to watch a smart, giant man being the best at his job of choice and kicking ass in a weekly basis. Proof of this is the fact that Reacher already has a bigger audience than much more announced expensive Amazon projects like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

As mentioned before, there are 28 books plus some short stories written by Lee Child about the character of Jack Reacher, and the show has already been renewed for a third season , so what’s for sure is that this TV version with Alan Ritchson is working much better than the Cruise version, and audiences are going to see much more of it. Tom Cruise will keep doing impossible stunts on the big screen, and Alan Ritchson will keep killing people with one punch on the small screen. Audiences are better off having those two possibilities and deciding when to choose to see one or the other.

Alan Ritchson

Some Reacher fans have called for a boycott following Alan Ritchson’s scathing comments about former US President Donald Trump .

The 41-year-old has gained a huge following over the last few years, thanks to his stint as Jack Reacher in the Amazon Prime series.

He has also enjoyed appearances in Ordinary Angels, Blue Mountain State and the new Guy Ritchie film, the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, beside Henry Cavill and Henry Golding.

In a wide-ranging new interview, the actor opened up about his time in the spotlight , as well as his relationship with religion and thoughts about police brutality.

Addressing his thoughts on how ‘closely aligned’ some Christians have become with the controversial politician – who is currently in court in New York for a hush money trial – Ritchson branded him a ‘rapist and con man’.

‘Trump is a rapist and a con man, and yet the entire Christian church seems to be treat him like he’s their poster child and it’s unreal. I don’t understand it,’ he told the Hollywood Reporter .

‘Christians today have become the most vitriolic tribe. It is so antithetical to what Jesus was calling us to be and to do.’

Many on social media slammed the Hollywood favorite for speaking out so vocally against Trump , claiming that they would no longer be supporting his work.

In a post on Reddit, Auspea fumed: ‘What an fool. He just lost this fan. Sad [sic].’

Kburch13 agreed: ‘Well Dam I liked that show. Why can’t they just keep their uninformed opinions to themselves.’

Gypsyoleil fumed: ‘I really enjoyed Reacher. Now I don’t want to watch it.’

Over on Twitter, Kastl Greyskull said: ‘Lost so much respect for this guy.. I won’t be watching his work anytime soon. I loved Reacher, but I l’m done.. #AlanRitchson.’

However, despite some negative comments, many more leapt to Ritchson’s defense, praising him for taking such a public stand.

Global-Letter-4984 enthused on Reddit: ‘Good for him! He definitely has a lot of fans on the right due to his look, his faith, and the types of productions he’s done, so it’s a big move that he’s speaking out against Trump.’

Shenanigans80h commented: ‘I know it shouldn’t be this way but I’m honestly stoked by how outspoken Ritchson is on this matter. So many celebrities these days are extremely afraid to voice a firm political opinion so they keep their comments vague or simply don’t talk about it at all.

‘For Ritchson, a guy who’s just now starting to breakthrough, to be so staunch in his thoughts is a breath of fresh air frankly. Makes me respect him a lot more.’

NiaNeuman cheered: ‘Everything I see about this guy makes me love him more.’

As Rick Judd tweeted: ‘Anyway, everyone should go watch Reacher. And any of Alan Ritchson’s projects. He rules.’
