Cycling enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies alike are in for a treat this October, with the arrival of the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium in The Lion City. Both a spectacular showcase of athleticism and a cycling competition of immense prestige, this event is bound to get sports fans out of their seats.
A legendary event which originates in France and dates back to 1903, The Tour de France is arguably the world’s most famous bicycle race. The race is known to be a gruelling test of endurance, mastery and athletism, with cyclists often covering over 3,500 kilometres over three weeks, with multiple stages held in countries across the globe.
For the first time ever, the Tour de France will feature a criterium in Southeast Asia, with Singapore setting the stage for some of the world’s most renowned cyclists to compete in a race of guts and glory. Read on for more details on the inaugural edition of this legendary cycling event in Singapore.
Experience sporting history
Held from 29-30 October at The Float@Marina Bay, the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium will feature 32 riders from eight of the world’s most lauded professional cycling teams.
Participants include Mark Cavendish—who holds the joint record for the most Tour de France stage wins—2022 Tour de France Champion Jonas Vingegaard and Singaporean cyclist Yeo Boon Kiak of Team SCF (Singapore Cycling Federation).
The action and excitement of the professional race will be taking place in the heart of the city, with a specially designed street circuit.
Race fans will be able to select from a variety of ticketing options—available via Ticketek Singapore and the official website— and experience both the thrills of the main race and a plethora of off-track activities at the Circuit Park.
Activities for all ages
Besides the professional race, sports fans and amateur cyclists of all ages can get in on the action with a variety of amateur races and exciting programmes.
In collaboration with the Singapore Cycling Federation, two amateur races—the Men’s Senior’s and Men’s Masters—have been organised for the public, alongside rides organised by title sponsor Prudential. The Brompton World Championships 2022 will also be taking place as part of the event, with participants competing in Male, Female and Veteran categories. Cycling enthusiasts should also check out Brompton’s booth at the festival village, where they’ll be able to take part in exciting activities like the Longest Track Stand, Fastest Folding of a Brompton bicycle and various test rides.
Attendees looking to get active or work up a sweat can take part in The Absolute Cycle Race, a test of grit and endurance, with winners determined by the where the most distance clocked in 10 minutes.
And that’s not the only way to work up a sweat! As evening falls on 29 October, the party gets started with SYNTHONY. Performed against a backdrop of epic lights and lasers, this dance extravaganza will feature tunes from a mix of DJs, as well as Singapore’s very own Metropolitan Festival Orchestra.

$220 registration fee for amateur races at Tour de France Singapore event draws mixed reaction

The registration fees for the amateur races in the inaugural Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium on Oct 29-30 drew mixed reactions from the local cycling community after they were announced on Thursday.
Some thought the $220 price tag for the men's seniors and masters categories in the Amateur Criterium on Oct 30 was too steep while others felt the price, which includes a two-day event pass worth $118 and an event jersey valued at $180, was reasonable.
Registration for both categories and other community rides is open.
Riders in the seniors category (aged 19 to 34) take part in a 24.8km race, while those in the masters category (aged 35 and above) will participate in an 18.6km race.
A local cycling enthusiast, who did not wish to be named, was initially thrilled about the event but is now turned off by the price and will not be attending.
The 43-year-old, who has been cycling for 30 years, called the price absurd, noting that local races typically cost between $60 and $100.

His last race was the SportsHub Sports Series: Cycle For Hope 2022 in August that cost $80.
He said: "To pay $220 for this event, and at a time when the whole world is going through inflation and financial uncertainties, is a little hard for me to digest. It's too high for a one- day race which is less than 50km.
"I was very excited when I heard the race was coming to Singapore with the Tour de France riders. But when I heard of the entry fee, I'm no longer excited but disappointed."
In contrast, avid cyclist Lukman Nurhakim Noordin has already signed up for the masters race and is eager to try the route for the first time.
While he thinks the price is reasonable after taking into account the two-day pass, he understands that others, especially younger cyclists who are not financially independent, might be unable to afford it.
The 42-year-old teacher said: "There might be racers who are only interested in racing and not watching the event, who will feel that it's still on the steep side.
"For passionate racers like me, this opportunity to race is hard to pass and we are willing to pay the premium for it.
"Racing opportunities in Singapore are hard to come by. When there is a race, riders will sign up for it just because of their passion for road racing. The fact that it will be held at the city centre is a chance not to be missed."
He is also looking forward to using his pass to catch world-class cyclists, like 2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, up close.
He added: "We watch them on TV, but being able to see them zoom past you at high speed is another kind of thrill."
The races, along with other community rides, will take place along a 3.1km route in the city that passes landmarks like the Merlion and Esplanade before ending at The Float @ Marina Bay.
This is the first Tour de France criterium to be held in South-east Asia after similar events in China and Japan.
The Singapore edition will feature 32 riders from eight professional cycling teams, including British Olympic silver medallist Mark Cavendish, who holds the joint record of 34 for most Tour de France stage wins.
Avid cyclists can also be part of the event by joining other community rides such as the Pruride Seeker's Society which includes a cycling clinic and the Absolute Cycle Race, where participants will attempt to clock the furthest distance in 10 minutes on a stationary bike.

Jonas Vingegaard to join Mark Cavendish at Tour de France Singapore Criterium
2022 Tour winner joins field of 32 top cyclists for October 30 crit in the heart of Singapore
A question mark may remain over Jonas Vingegaard ’s race calendar for the rest of the season but there is one event the Tour de France winner has been confirmed for, and that is the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium at the end of October.
The Jumbo-Visma rider hasn’t raced since that final stage of the finishing on the Champs-Élysées, missing the Tour of Denmark and turning down a spot in the Danish team for the Wollongong Road World Championships in September. The 25-year-old’s planned return race is as yet unknown, but it was announced Wednesday that he will be part of a 32 rider line up, that also includes Mark Cavendish (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl), at the Singapore criterium on October 30.
While a street circuit in the heart of Singapore may not exactly be the terrain that plays to Vingegaard’s strengths, the yellow jersey he claimed as the Tour de France victor makes him a crucial ingredient at the exhibition event.
Similar Tour de France associated exhibition events, drawing the big names of the three week French Grand Tour to locations well away from its home base, have been held in the past from Saitama Criterium in Japan to the Shanghai Criterium in China, but this event is a first for Singapore.

“The Tour de France Criterium is a cycling performance, showcasing the speed and intensity of cycling through a race on an inner-city circuit," Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme said when the event was announced earlier this year. "The Criterium format allows us to bring an adaptation of the Tour to more places, while still retaining the essence and spirit of the Tour De France with top riders in the heart of the city.
“With the Tour de France Criterium, cycling becomes a cultural bridge, celebrating the Tour de France atmosphere in territories the race has not yet explored.”
Alongside the professional WorldTour riders like yellow jersey winner Vingegaard and Cavendish, who has 34 Tour de France stage wins across his career, there will be a Singapore Cycling Federation team.

“It’s an honour to race among the world’s best,” Singaporean team member Yeo Boon Kiak said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to seeing how our race strategy and familiarity with the street circuit measures up against the skills of the best cyclists in the world – we’re sure it will be an amazing experience.”
Last year a Giro d’Italia criterium was also run in Dubai on November 6, with a 30-lap short format race headlined by 2021 victor Egan Bernal as well as the 2021 winner and points classification winner Peter Sagan.
