13 Best Things to Do in Surabaya

Nestled on the northeastern coast of the captivating Indonesian island of Java, Surabaya, Also known as a “Kota Pahlawan” (Hero City), beckons travelers with its fascinating blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy. As the second-largest city in Indonesia, Surabaya boasts a rich cultural heritage, bustling streets, and many attractions that will captivate even the most seasoned explorers.

Join us as we traverse Surabaya’s attractions, offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant soul and unveiling the unique experiences that await within its bustling streets. For that, we have compiled the ultimate things to do in Surabaya, combining nature, history, and modernity for an unforgettable trip.

Walk around Wisata Mangrove

Located in Wonorejo village, around 16 kilometers from Surabaya city center, Wisata Mangrove is likely the best natural place and one of the best things to do in Surabaya. It offers a long jogging track surrounded by mangrove trees, along with a coastal atmosphere that is very refreshing in the morning. The entrance ticket is only IDR 3,000 per person.

I recommend visiting the Wisata Mangrove very early. The air tends to be cooler and fresher in the morning. I’ve once come here a bit late, and the weather is rather hot due to the scorching sun.

The available jogging tracks here are made from bamboo, keeping the natural feeling of this forest-like area. A pavilion built from bamboo in the forest’s center will allow you to rest and enjoy the scenery. Under the jogging tracks, the soils are like swamps, where you can find a lot of crabs, snails, and conch. Don’t forget to bring your snacks and drinks when you enter this forest, because there are no food sellers inside the forest. The available food stalls are located nearby the entrance.

Visit Surabaya Zoo

Surabaya Zoo, called Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS), is an iconic city zoo. It feels incomplete visiting Surabaya without coming to this one. One of the most famous zoos in South East Asia, Surabaya Zoo is home to more than two thousand animals from more than two hundred different species, including rare species from Mammals, Reptiles, Aves, and Pisces.

The ticket to this Zoo is only IDR 15,000 for each person, including children above 85 cm. You can pay for the access via an e-money application or in cash via the ticket booths.

Chill at Surabaya beach – Pantai Kenjeran (Kenjeran Beach)

One of the things to do in Surabaya is chill at beaches, and who would have guessed for a city? As two of the best beaches near Surabaya, I recommend visiting them here – Kenjeran Beach: Pantai Kenjeran Lama and Pantai Kenjeran Baru.

Pantai Kenjeran Lama offers a more laid-back shore with a tender breeze to relax your mind and body. The waves here are not too big, so walking or playing along the seashore is relatively safe. You can rent a ship to enjoy this beach more. It’s very cheap, with only IDR 20,000 for each adult. The ship will sail a short trip around the seashore.

As for the refreshment, you can enjoy culinary options not far from the beach. There are a lot of choices when it comes to eating on this beach. While enjoying the beach scenery, you can eat street foods and drink some soft drinks or various ice like Cilok (like meatballs, but less meat and more flour), Sempolan (fried flour shaped in bamboo stick with multiple flavors), Es Degan (Young Coconut Ice), Es Cincau (Grass Jelly Ice), Es Dawet (Ice Dawet), and many more.

Next is Pantai Kenjeran Baru. This new version of Kenjeran Beach is also called Pantai Ria Kenjeran or KenPark. The difference between these two beaches is more in the concept and the facility. While Pantai Kenjeran Lama (the older one) is more natural and less modern facilities, Pantai Kenjeran Baru offers more modern facilities and attractions without leaving its natural touch.

Unlike Pantai Kenjeran Lama, to enter Pantai Kenjeran Baru, you should pay an entrance ticket of IDR 15.000 per person. In Pantai Kenjeran Baru, many attractions are suitable for little children, like Water Park, riding horses, electric cars, Kereta Kelinci (rabbit train – small train to go around sightseeing), as well as new attractions with Chinese culture like Pagoda Tian Ti, Klenteng Sanggar Agung, and other unique architectural designs.

Refresh yourself at hutan bambu surabaya (surabaya bamboo forest).

Visiting Hutan Bambu, or Bamboo Forest, is one of the things to do in Surabaya. This new forest is located in the Keputih area, around 12 kilometers from Surabaya City Center.

This bamboo forest becomes another choice to refresh the body and mind after exhausting days of activities. It may remind us of Sagano Bamboo Forest in Japan. The beautifully lined bamboo trees offer this area a natural and relaxing atmosphere. The sun shines warmly along with the gentle wind.

Although called Bamboo Forest, the area has other parks like Taman Harmoni (Harmony Park) and Taman Ruang Publik (Public Park). Various flowers and bushes are planted to complete the forest’s surroundings.

You can walk and take pictures with your loved ones, sit on the available benches inside the park, or play with swings and other rides provided by the forest’s management. If you want to enjoy this forest, come during summer or spring, and avoid after rain because the grounds can get quite muddy.

Take the Majapahit Hotel Heritage Tour

Formerly known as Yamato or Oranje Hotel, this hotel has been stated as one of cultural heritage by the Surabaya City Government. This hotel holds many historical values of the hotel and Surabaya during the colonial era.

Today, the hotel management provides a heritage tour every day at 2 pm, arguably one of the things to do in Surabaya that you should not miss. The tour explains the history of the hotel and its role during Indonesia’s independence. The appointed staff will take you to some historical parts of the hotel.

As the last attraction in this tour, you will be taken to the hotel’s garden, which has a European style. Then, when you’ve felt tired enough, you can enjoy some refreshments the hotel provides, like tea or coffee with snacks. For this hotel tour, you must make a reservation first via telephone and pay IDR 100.000 per person.

You also come to this place freely. The best spot to take pictures of the iconic Surabaya statues would be via Skateboard Park.

"The City of Indonesia's History."

Surabaya tourism.

Known fondly as 'The City of Heroes' for the pivotal role that the city played in the Indonesian freedom struggle, Surabaya is one of Indonesia's most enigmatic cities. The country's second-largest urban settlement, Surabaya today reflects the influences of its many occupants. Arab Quarter, with its mazy grids of lanes, one of Indonesia's largest Chinatowns, and the remaining vestiges of classically beautiful Dutch colonial-era buildings all make up Surabaya's heritage.

Undeservedly left off of most tourists' itinerary of Indonesia, Surabaya has much to offer any visitor that chooses to walk through its historic streets. 21st-century developmental projects aimed at alleviating the city's traffic and pollution troubles aim to elevate Surabaya to a major tourist destination. Surabaya's pockets of rich heritage, sprawling botanic gardens, the immaculately maintained Sampoerna Museum, beautiful churches, mosques, and markets make Surabaya a hidden-gem amongst Indonesia's more illustrious tourist destinations.

Splendor of Surabaya City

This city used to be the trading hub for the illustrious inland empires of Java. Situated on the mouth of the  Brantas River , today Surabaya is a modern industrial city, considered the economic and trading center of Eastern Java as well as home to the nation’s navy.

As the capital of East Java, Surabaya is also the second most populated city in Indonesia. The extended metropolitan area of this city is named Gerbangkertosusila, which stands for Gresik-Bangkalan-Mojokerto-Surabaya-Sidoarjo-Lamongan.

There are many version regarding the history of the name Surabaya, but the local government and historian agreed to conclude that it comes from the phrase “sura ing bhaya”, meaning “the courage to face dangers”.

When strolling around the city, you can also find the Sura and Baya monument, depicted from a folklore version about the fight between a shark and a crocodile. The story is immortalized as an iconic monument of Surabaya.

Surabaya is also known as The City of Heroes due to the epic battle happened in the city during Indonesia’s independence revolution. For visitors, highlights of the city include its submarine museum locally known as Monkasel, the immaculately presented  Sampoerna museum , the unique Cheng Hoo Mosque , the majestic Sanggar Agung temple or a visit to the  island of Madura  via the Suramadu Bridge.

Monkasel is a museum literally established inside a decommissioned Russian made a submarine. It served the Indonesian navy from 1962-1990. You can tour inside and experience a slice of history. At the Sampoerna museum, visitors can learn about the long line of the tobacco industry and enjoy the visuals. There is also a unique city tour bus that can take you to the cities nearby landmarks.

The Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque was built in honor of the Chinese Admiral Cheng Hoo, who spread Islamic believes while he trades and voyage in eastern Java around the 15th century. Sanggar Agung, also known as Hong San Tang is a temple beautifully located overlooking the Kenjeran beach. The temple featured stunning ocean gate with an impressive statue of Guan Yin guarded by a pair of heavenly dragons, a sight that you will have to see for yourself!

Splendor of Surabaya City

Suramadu bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Indonesia, spanning to 5,4 km crossing the Madura Strait. The bridge will take you to Bangkalan, the heart of Madura Island, where you can splurge on the natural panorama and delicious Maduranese cuisines. Surabaya is also an ideal base to explore the other attractions of East Java including  Mt Bromo , the cool mountain retreats of  Malang  and the natural beauty of  Ijen Plateau.

Splendor of Surabaya City

Explore the culinary adventure of fine dining choices to vivid night stalls offering unique local snacks. From fresh fruit salad known as Rujak, the savory black soup with diced meat called Rawon and the fried tofu dish named Tahu Tek.

To find out about the real city buzz and seek for more signature local delicacies and various goods, head to the market! Pasar Atom or Pasar Atum is a legendary marketplace opened since 1972 in northern Surabaya that merged a modern market with a shopping mall.

Most famous food souvenir from Surabaya would be the layered cake brand of Spikoe Resep Kuno, Almond Crispy chips, Bu Rudy’s Chilly Sauce and the latest hits of Surabaya Snowcake - mixed of pastry and sponge cake.

Speaking of cake, you can also splurge to enjoy an ambiance of high tea moments in Hotel Majapahit. A beautiful colonial style hotel, formerly known as the Oranje Hotel built-in 1910.

The hotel features a lush garden, an 806-meter square presidential suite, several cafes and restaurants, all adorned with classic details.

To cool off from the city’s heat, come by to Zangrandi. Another legendary icons of Surabaya, this ice cream parlor was established in 1930 by an Italian named Roberto Zangrandi. With its original recipe, the crowd’s favorite menus are Tutti Fruti, Banana Split, and Soda ice cream.

All of this sweetness is perfect to soothe your day and keep you excited to explore more of Surabaya!

Surabaya is served by domestic and international air routes. Many domestic routes use Surabaya airport as a transit point.

Boats operate from Tanjung Perak Harbour. Pelni operates connections to Sulawesi and Kalimantan. You can enjoy the panoramic view of the harbor from Surabaya North Quay, a new waterfront attraction for travelers coming in or departing from the city.

Buses operate between  Surabaya  and  Malang ,  Probolinggo ,  Banyuwangi ,  Solo ,  and  Yogyakarta .  Fast trains travel between Jakarta and Surabaya via Semarang and Yogyakarta. From Surabaya, most trains go to Jakarta and depart from  Pasar Turi train station multiple times a day.

Car rentals or taxis are available if you need to circle around the city with ease. Ask for a good guide that knows the highlight of this vibrant metropolitan. There is also a motorcycle called ojek and public transportation in the form of minibusses.

Try riding the Becak, a kind of rickshaw that maneuver easily among the busy street of Surabaya. Since Becak driver usually lacking English skills, you might need local assistance to help you with price bargain and point of destinations.

Surabaya ( Surabaya Javanese : ꦯꦸꦫꦧꦪ Suroboyo ) is a city on the eastern side of Java , the capital of the East Java province of Indonesia . It is the second largest city in the country with over 10 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. Complementing Jakarta , its larger brother on the western side of the same island, it sits close enough geographically to be exposed by the Javanese culture, while large enough to hold its people of multicultural backgrounds.

Understand [ edit ]

According to folklore, Surabaya's name derives from the Javanese words Suro , meaning shark, and Boyo , meaning crocodile. With over 2 million people, Surabaya is the second-largest city in Indonesia . While many people come for business, Surabaya is also a gateway city for Mount Bromo and Bali . The city's tree-lined streets and renovated pavements will impress those newly arrived from other cities in the archipelago, though in general the city's attractions tend to be more apparent to those who make it their home rather than to short-term visitors. Put in the effort here, and you'll have an authentic, fascinating, unique experience of an Asia that once was: get it while it lasts.

Climate [ edit ]

Very tropical and you need to wear casual, light clothes: T-shirts, shorts, sandals or shoes. Temperatures vary little through the year, with daytime highs around 32-34°C, falling at night to 22-26°C. During the rainy season (November–April) be prepared for occasional flash floods and traffic jams, and sometimes its almost as bad as Jakarta.

Community [ edit ]

Being simultaneously one of the most ancient and significant trading ports in Indonesia, a post Dutch-colonial city (the Dutch knew it as Soerabaja ), and having passed through brief Japanese control during WWII, Surabaya has a complex and patchwork heritage. It's not unusual to meet Surabaya locals with heritage from other parts of Indonesia, all parts of south-eastern China, the Middle East or Europe. Surabaya was also one of the only places in Indonesia with a synagogue; it was demolished in 2013.

Talk [ edit ]

While the Chinese were the first to record the area in the 13th century under the name 重迦廬 ( zhonggala ; apparently after the then-current local kingdom Jungala ), local Chinese now know the city as 泗水 ( sishui ), while some further afield call it by a transliterated name 苏腊巴亚 ( sulabaya ).

The national rail operator Kereta Api [dead link] runs multiple daily trains from Jakarta and several other cities in Java , with both daytime and overnight services available.

Surabaya has two main station for long distance trains, -7.24828 112.731122 2 Surabaya Pasar Turi and -7.265516 112.751998 3 Surabaya Gubeng , both located at the heart of downtown Surabaya. Pasar Turi serves executive air-conditioned trains from Jakarta, Semarang, and all of Java's northern coast; while Gubeng is the terminus station for mainly economy class trains and trains for southern and eastern Java, including Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Banyuwangi for the ferry to Bali. Slow and packed local economy-class trains from Malang arrive at -7.242993 112.740748 4 Surabaya Kota station (also known as Semut ) and passing through Gubeng station as they come in from the south.

Seats in Eksekutif (first class) and Bisnis (second class) for any intercity journey can be reserved from 90 days in advance up to 24 hours before departure at any major railway station in Java through e-kiosks serve by yourself. It same with online reserved by minimarket attendant of Alfamart and Indomart and the payment in minimarket can be done by cash also without any additional fee. On the last 24 hours before departure, the ticket is only available in the ticket counter at departure station. Senior citizens ages 60 and above are eligible for a 20% discount when the ticket is bought in this time bracket.

By boat [ edit ]

The main harbour is -7.19797 112.734276 5 Tanjung Perak , at the northern end of Jl. Perak Timur road is about 4 km north of downtown.

  • Angkutan Sungai Danau dan Penyeberangan ( ASDP ): Daily ferry service from Ujung Kamal and Madura
  • Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia ( PELNI ): Runs passenger ships from a large number of port cities throughout Indonesia.

By bus [ edit ]

Surabaya has frequent bus connections from all parts of East Java and from major cities in other parts of Java and beyond. The main bus terminal is at -7.350831 112.724729 6 Purabaya Bus Terminal (also known as Bungurasih ), about 10 km south of the city.

Note: The names "Purabaya Terminal" and "Bungurasih Terminal" are used interchangeably to refer to Surabaya's main bus terminal. "Purabaya" is the correct name but it is sometimes called "Bungurasih" because it is located in Bungurasih.

There are many people inside the terminal trying to solicit passengers to the bus of the company from which they get a commission, and they are especially bothersome to the foreigners. If you follow them to the bus, you are likely to get offered an inflated (Rp 200,000 or even more to Bali) price, even though there's an official price list (you can see it at the exit to the platform). Ticket offices do not guarantee you to be safe from overcharging - most of them are private, and there's no price posted on the window, so shop around. It may make sense to bargain if the price is certainly too high. Prices may be slightly higher during high-demand periods like weekends and public holidays.

There are frequent buses from Malang (Rp 30,000 for air conditioned, less for "ekonomi" ) and Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo , Rp 30,000), so just turn up.

To Denpasar in Bali , fair price is Rp 200,000-280,000 by eksekutif night bus, including the ferry trip between Banyuwangi and Gilimanuk , mineral water and a meal. Buses depart from Bungurasih bus terminal in Surabaya, and arrive in Mengwi bus terminal in Denpasar . Duration: 10-12 hr.

A ticket to Jakarta should cost Rp 250,000-350,000 in eksekutif bus. On average, eksekutif bus bound for Jakarta will head to Jakarta via the Trans-Java Toll Road , which allows direct travel from Surabaya to Jakarta via toll roads more quickly. The travel time for eksekutif bus via the Trans-Java Toll Road generally ranges from 10-12 hours with 1 or 2 rest stops on the way (20–30 minutes each), and at least some traffic jams near Jakarta.

Another option is to go by minibus (known in Indonesia as travel ). A number of companies run door-to-door minibus services from and to major destinations in Java , including Malang and Yogyakarta . These services are both more convenient and more expensive than public buses. Seats can be booked in advance through company offices, and also through many hotels and travel agents.

By car [ edit ]

Surabaya is well connected from a few of Java island's large cities, thanks to the Trans-Java toll road . Surabaya is reachable in 12 hours from the west end of the island at the Merak ferry crossing to Sumatra , 9 hours from Jakarta , 4 hours from Semarang , 3.5 hours from Solo , 2 hours from Ngawi and less than 1.5 hours from Malang . From the neighboring Madura Island, the Suramadu bridge crosses the Madura strait, for free.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis are plentiful on the streets of Surabaya. Some taxis are not renowned for their reliability so stick to the well known firms:

  • Blue Bird Group , ☏ +62 31 3721234 .
  • Orenz Taxi , ☏ +62 31 8799999 .
  • Silver and Express .
  • Zebra Taxi , ☏ +62 31 8416666 .

Always insist on a metered fare. Figure on Rp 20,000 for a cross-town trip and Rp 70,000 to the airport. Drivers will expect a minimum fare of Rp 15,000 for short trips and for longer trips, pay the fare shown on the meter rounded up to the nearest multiple of Rp 1,000. Drivers will appreciate a tip of a few thousand rupiah. Blue Bird has increased its minimum payment to Rp 25,000, but it's still the most reliable taxi company.

A trip from Stasiun Gubeng to Pasar Keputran should cost around Rp 20,000.

By becak [ edit ]

Becak (cycle rickshaw) are a traditional form of transportation in Surabaya. Surprisingly, they are still visible everywhere in the city outskirts, unlike throughout most of Southeast Asia where they have nearly vanished already. Expect to pay around Rp 5,000 for a short-hop, or Rp 10,000 for a few blocks, Rp 20,000 for a multi-block haul. Drivers may not want to go a long way, and if it's stinking hot have a heart and pay them some more money. Some of them have sun and rain covers, though these can be a bit low at times. Also, they can vary quite a bit in width: if you are 'big boned' you might need one to yourself.

Also available Becak Motor (cycle which powered by motor cycle engine).

By ride-hailing [ edit ]

Also available : Gocar & Gojek, Grab car & Grab bike.

Commuter city trains are extremely limited, serving some parts of Surabaya and Sidoarjo .

  • Wonokromo Station , ☏ +62 31 8410694 .
  • Gubeng Station , ☏ +62 31 5033115 .
  • Pasar Turi Station , ☏ +62 31 5345014 .
  • Semut Station , ☏ +62 31 3521465 .

Suroboyo Bus is the municipal city bus service. As of August 2018 it only serves Rajawali to Purabaya bus terminal via Pasar Turi train station, Siola and Tunjungan. While they do not accept cash as a form of payment, to help protect the environment passengers may exchange 3 large plastic bottles, 5 small plastic bottles or 10 plastic glasses for a ticket.

This is a large populous city and buses are usually crowded. There are two class of bus: standard buses which are usually very full and patas buses (supposed to be first class, but it is still... a bus.)

By minibus [ edit ]

Bemos (public minibus) in Surabaya are called bemo or lin . They are plentiful in Surabaya and routes are distinguished by their color.

You need to know the routes to specific destination and beware of pickpockets, as it's not safe.

There are many car rental companies. To rent a car with a driver for one day might cost Rp 250,000-500,000, depending on the type of car and the length of the trip. For a full day trip, it is customary to buy lunch for the driver, or give some extra money for the driver to buy cigarettes, a snack, or coffee. Don't forget to pay for parking and toll fees and gas (unless you have already negotiated this into your initial price).

Stay safe [ edit ]

As with any big city, never let your guard down, because big cities such as Surabaya have a reputation among Indonesians for a mid crime rate. That said, Surabaya has few real dangers for visitors apart from the perils of crossing the very busy roads (the secret is to raise an arm while crossing, and to progress with a predictable speed and bearing, allowing the traffic to flow around you). Don't walk on the streets, especially at night other than the CBD area, if you can avoid it since you won't have anything to sightsee. Bring along your face mask if you travel by foot during rush hour since the traffic will be chaos and the air pollution is bad (16:30 to 18:30). Be polite to the people, since Surabayans tend to swear easily which is very common. Do not easily trust people you have just met, even if they look friendly.

The international code for Indonesia is +62. Local Surabaya phone numbers will start +62 31 xxx xxxx or +62 31 xxxx xxxx for the CDMA provider or +62 8xx xxxx xxxx for the GSM provider.

There are four main telecommunication providers in Surabaya: Telkomsel , Indosat , Three , Smartfren and XL .

To make an international call from Surabaya, dial the access code 001 (for Indosat), 007 (for Telkom/Telkomsel), or 008 (for Indosat), followed by the country code, area code and party's number. Providers offer cheaper rates for calls using Internet telephony routes (VOIP). The access codes for this cheaper service are 01016 for Indosat provider and 01017 for Telkom and Telkomsel provider.

By net [ edit ]

If you have your own mobile phone, it may run free wifi networks at many malls. Ask at the information desk for access codes. Free hotspots are also available in most restaurants and cafes. Several hotels also provide free hotspots in their lobby. All major hotels provide internet access in one or more ways; simply ask them about this when you make your booking.

Alternatively, if you have a compatible 4G mobile phone and a laptop, tethering to your PC is the quickest way to gain internet access although speeds might not impress. Note that prepaid SIM cards can be purchased very easily and cheap, and that service activation is completed on the user's phone very quickly. Once activated, recharge with credits as necessary. Internet access is usually available at this stage; refer to your phone's user manual for tethering instructions. Operators will usually offer internet packets that offer cheaper access fees-instructions to access these services are available in the booklet that comes with your SIM card (i.e. XL's services are accessible by dialing *123# ). BlackBerry Internet Service is readily available and can be registered similarly on the prepaid SIM.

Internet cafes are available in many parts of the city with a price of Rp 4,000-5,000 per hour. However, most of the internet cafes can be found around universities, and in most shopping malls.

Internet speeds in Surabaya are rarely fast, regardless of your connection. They are usually sufficient to make decent Whatsapp voice calls, although HD video calling may not be possible. Temporarily disabling software updates (Windows Update, security software updates, Adobe Updater, etc.) may help maximise access speeds.

  • Taman Safari Indonesia II in Pasuruan is the second and probably biggest Taman Safari in terms of acreage in Indonesia, located in the foothills of Prigen. This park runs of the most successful Javan tiger conservation programs in Asia. This park is not like an ordinary zoo. You must drive through the park in your own car or in the sightseeing bus provided within the park, passing an interesting and amusing collection of local and international animals clustered within areas themed according to their original habitat - Americas, Asia, Africa, and Indonesia. There's also a food court, mechanical and animal rides, a petting zoo, and animal shows. The park is usually crowded on weekends and public holidays. However, it is mostly deserted on weekdays.
  • Mount Bromo is a popular 4-hour trip from Surabaya.
  • Tretes and Trawas are 2 hrs away. Pleasant villas among hills. Good food. There are many roasted corn stalls at night.
  • Malang and Batu are 2 hrs away. Malang (height: just over 400 m) is a coolish very busy city with some nostalgic charming houses and boulevards preserved from the colonial period. Hotels, recreation areas, and villas such as picnics and sports clubs are widely available. Bantu (height: around 1,000 m) is a hill resort around 30 mins by car to the west of Malang. Higher again (around 2,000 m), just beyond Batu to the north on the slopes of Mt Arjuna, is the well-known hill resort of Selecta.
  • Wisata Bahari Lamongan (WBL) in Lamongan is 1 hr away.
  • Trowulan is believed to be the capital of the Majapahit Empire that reached its golden age in the 14th century. If you love culture and history, this is definitely a place worth visiting. There are few remains of the Majapahit Empire, such as the Ancient Pool (Kolam Segaran), Tikus Temple, Brahu Temple, Bajang Ratu temple, museum, and more. Here you can also see a sacred graveyard that people from other places around the area in Java often visit for a pilgrimage.

Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, is a sprawling commercial centre and the primary trading port for islands to the east. Known as the ‘City of Heroes’ because the momentous first battle of the Indonesian revolution took place here in November 1945, it is now home to around 3 million people. Although predictably hectic, enlightened local governance in recent years has made it far more pleasant than some other large urban centres, with clean, tree-shaded streets in the centre, good public transport, and relatively orderly traffic. The crumbling older quarters towards the port area are less gentrified but contain much historical interest.

Tailor-made trips for   Indonesia

The most interesting areas of Surabaya are the old Arab, Chinese and colonial neighbourhoods in the north of the city. The richly atmospheric Arab quarter, known as Ampel, is centred on the mosque and tomb of Sunan Ampel, one of the legendary saints said to have spread Islam in Java. The mosque compound is approached via a narrow, covered bazaar.

Further south, amidst crumbling colonial-era shop-houses, the vast Pasar Pabean market is a warren of stalls and alleys. From late afternoon until early morning the western part of the market turns into an emporium for freshly-caught fish.

Beyond the market, the original Chinese quarter begins, home to old temples such as Hong Tik Hian and Surabaya’s oldest Chinese shrine, the 18th-century Hok An Kiong.

From the Chinese quarter, walk west and cross the famous Red Bridge over the Kali Mas River. Nearby is House of Sampoerna, a small museum attached to a factory that makes traditional hand-rolled clove kretek (clove cigarettes). There is a good café on site. ‘Surabaya Heritage Track’ is a free sightseeing bus run by House of Sampoerna. Departing the museum three times daily Tuesday to Sunday, it is an excellent way to see the city.

Top attractions and things to do in Surabaya

Many of Surabaya’s best things to see and do are to the north of the city, where Chinese districts spill out into old Arab neighbourhoods with the colonial leftover from when the Dutch took over the city in the mid-18th century. Here are the best things to do in Surabaya.

#1 House of Sampoerna

This tobacco museum is housed in a 19th-century Dutch building, which was originally an orphanage. On display find all manner of tobacco-related paraphernalia, as well as some other artefacts. Upstairs, look down on the former factory’s main hub, where scores of workers once rolled and packed thousands of cigarettes a day.

#2 Kong Co Kong Tik Cun Ong Temple

Discover candle-lit prayer and burning incense at this exquisite Buddhist temple in east Surabaya.

#3 Masjid Ampel

Ampel is the oldest mosque in the region, and one of the oldest in the country. It is a cherished sacred space; non-Muslims are not permitted entrance into the mosque itself, but the surrounding streets are certainly worth a ramble.

#4 Pasar Pabean

Connecting the Chinese and Arab Quarters is an extensive, winding market, where, amid the dimly-lit alleys, you can browse piles of brightly-hued chilies, inhale powdered spices billowing from sacks and marvel at the equally pungent stacks of seafood on display.

#5 Masjid al Akbar

Masjid al Akbar's aqua-marine domes glimmer in the sunlight. It is a truly striking sight. Take a guided tour from a member of staff, and finish with an elevator trip to the top of the minaret for panoramas of the cityscape.

The standard of accommodation in Surabaya is generally high. Check booking sites for some seriously excellent deals on luxury hotels. The best areas to stay in Surabaya include:

Step back in time and wander streets filled with elegant colonial-style buildings and ancient landmarks throughout the area.

A towering red entrance gate adorned with golden dragons marks the entrance to the city’s well-preserved Chinatown. Find it lively, friendly, and filled with ancient buildings and delicious food.

Check the best accommodation in Surabaya .

There’s no shortage of places to eat in Surabaya. Find everything from night markets to Japanese imari. While there’s not a huge drinking culture, the eagle-eyed will find a scattering of bars and clubs for a drink and some tunes.

Here are the best places to eat in Surabaya:

  • Pasar Genteng Amid the trinkets, spices and fabrics find aromatic street food and traditional produce at Genteng Market.
  • Chamas Brazilian Churrascaria Sizzling skewers of glazed meats, vibrant cocktails and warm amber lighting all make for a stylish - and filling - night out.
  • Xiang Fu Hai Cuisine This elegant Chinese eatery will meet all your dim sum needs.
  • Imari Japanese Restaurant A delicious rainbow of Japanese cuisine greets diners at Imari..
  • Seventeen Skyview Resto & Lounge High-end international dining with a view.

Getting around Surabaya isn't as simple as some other major Indonesian cities, with most visitors opting for a taxi over minibuses.

The easiest way to get around Surabaya is by taxi. Book through well-known companies such as Uber or GrabTaxi, else Bluebird Taxis are also very good.

Surabaya is well-served by buses. There are two types in the city: normal buses and patas buses (express). Both are often crowded. Visitors, however, rarely use any other bus than patas P1, which goes along Jl Basuki Rahmat to Purabaya bus station.

Visitors will need at least two-to-three days to explore Surabaya, depending on what they want to see and do in the city. The House of Sampoerna, the Museum Mpu Tantular, the Cheng Hoo Mosque, and the Suramadu Bridge, can all be tackled in two days – a morning or afternoon spent on each – with time to fit in the Submarine Monument, Surabaya City Hall, and the Pasar Atom.

If you want to visit the surrounding area, such as Mount Bromo or the Ijen Crater, then you will need to add additional days to your itinerary.

The best time to visit Surabaya is during the dry season, which typically lasts from May to September. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Surabaya's wet season lasts from October to April, and brings frequent rain showers and high humidity. It can make lead to some flooding here, making it harder to get around the city. Lower prices for accommodation will reflect that.

Find out more about the best time to visit Indonesia .

As Indonesia’s second city, there are numerous ways to get to Surabaya, including international flights.

Surabaya Juanda International Airport is Indonesia’s third busiest airport, with a full schedule of domestic and international flights.

Whether taking a public bus or a door-to-door minibus, heavy traffic is a problem. Surabaya’s main bus terminal is called Purabaya (or Bungurasih) and is around 13km south of the centre. Minibuses can be arranged through accommodation.

Avoid the traffic jams and travel by train. Trains from Jakarta come into either the Pasar Turi train station or Gubeng train station, which is the most central and sells tickets for trains in and out of the city.

Complete Surabaya Travel Guide for Adventurers

surabaya indonesia travel

traveller Ting

If you are travelling to East Java, for the first time, Surabaya is the place I would strongly recommend. In this blog, I will share with you a detailed Surabaya travel guide to help you with your first ever visit to this less explored city.

Only a 2.5 hours flight from Singapore, Surabaya is a beautiful capital city located in East Java, Indonesia. It is Indonesia’s second-largest city and for which the primary language they use is Bahasa Indonesia (a.k.a. Indonesian).

One of the best parts about visiting Surabaya is its proximity to one of the most exciting and adventurous places. If you are a person who likes to be in nature, this is the place to be.

SURABAYA Travel Guide

Surabaya Travel Guide & Itinerary

East Java is dominated by a series of picturesque and spectacular volcanic peaks. There are four volcanic peaks higher than 3,000 m in the region, of which the most prominent are Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen. This volcanic activity has fueled the fertility of the area and verdant agriculture is a prominent feature of the area.

My Surabaya travel guide will help you explore these volcanic peaks near Surabaya and some other spectacular natural wonders in the region.

4 Days 3 Nights Itinerary in Surabaya, East Java

Although there are plenty of places to explore in and around Surabaya, I was looking for some adrenaline rush in Surabaya. Therefore, my itinerary and Surabaya trip was mostly centred around exploring the adventurous side of the region.

Surabaya Travel Plan

– Stock up on some snacks and food at convenience stores or the supermarket to prepare for the long drive and the rest of the trip

– Drive to the starting point of the hike

– Complete the hike in approximately 5 hours or less, gaining a first-hand experience up close with the legendary blue flames

– Head back to the hotel to wash up and rest before checking out

– Drive towards the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and experience an exhilarating descending hike towards the base of the waterfall

– End your day by checking in at the next hotel near Mount Bromo

Iconic Places to be Covered in Surabaya Travel Guide

A Surabaya travel guide is incomplete without a description of all the exciting places that you will be covering on your trip. Below I have shared with you a brief overview of the places that were part of my itinerary.

1. Mount Ijen, East Java – The Blue Flames

Mount Ijen is a place you wouldn’t want to miss here in East Java! Here lies the world’s largest acidic lake, the legendary blue flames and also one of the best views of nature you can ever get in Asia!

Surabaya Travel

The Blue flames although are a sight to behold. However, you need to be really careful as the strong unpleasant smell can make breathing a little difficult.

Legendary blue flames

The hike towards these beautiful views takes about 1.5hours, but it starts at around 2 am in order to see the blue flames. It includes a sharp descent down rocky beds till you are close enough to see the blue flames.

This blue fire is created from ignited sulphuric gas, which emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600 °C. You can even feel the heat from way above. The smell of sulphur was so strong there too that we had to put on the face masks. Even so, it was difficult to breathe without choking on that unpleasant smell.

Surabaya Travel Plan

That’s me and my friend in front of the world’s most acidic lake. It is deadly but gorgeous!

World’s Largest Acidic Lake

At about 5 am, we left the blue flame and headed upwards to catch the sunrise from above the clouds and a view of the world’s largest acidic lake. The view was spectacular with the clouds on one side, and the volcano on the other!

Surabaya Travel

The Tumpak Sewu waterfalls are one of the best waterfalls in Indonesia. They are a must-visit.

2. Tumpak Sewu Waterfall – The Exhilarating Downward Hike

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall (also known as Coban Sewu) is arguably Indonesia’s best waterfall. It is by far one of the most impressive waterfalls I’ve ever seen!

I absolutely adore the hike downwards because of how “natural” it was. The track was made up mainly of wooden sticks, planks, bamboo, ropes and rubber tyres. Hence, my best advice to you is to wear comfortable stretchy clothing that allows you to manoeuvre around easily. Once you conquered this part of the hike, what awaits you is that beautiful view of the waterfall!

Surabaya_Bromo_Peak

That is me all smiles, after finishing the trek to Mount Bromo.

3.  Mount Bromo – Stargazing and to the Smoking Crater

Mount Bromo, is an active volcano and part of the Tengger mountain range in East Java, Indonesia. At 2,329 meters, it is not the highest peak of the mountain range, but definitely, the best known among its brothers. A must-visit when you’re here in Surabaya!

Plan to watch the sunrise and stargaze at Mount Bromo. It is possible to even see the Milky Way on clear days! However, do remember to dress in really warm clothes as it can be as cold as 5 degrees Celsius then as you wait for the sunrise.

Right after that, head down to the base of Mount Bromo where you can get close to the smoking crater of this active volcano. The temperature there would have risen to a comfortable range from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. This is a huge contrast to when at the peak of Mount Bromo, so layering of clothes is really important here! You will walk past long plains of volcanic ashes before getting to the smoking crater. Those views are just jaw-dropping because of how unreal it is. It made me feel like I was literally walking into a postcard!

Surabaya Itinerary

The Madakaripura waterfalls are another gorgeous fall near Surabaya, and totally worth a visit.

4. Madakaripura Waterfall – Freezing Showers

Located not too far from Mount Bromo in the Lombang district, Madakaripura Waterfall is about a three hours drive from the capital of East Java, Surabaya. This spectacular waterfall is well hidden at the end of a deep valley of the Tengger mountain range and is definitely worth the visit!

The trail towards the Madakaripura waterfall was, again, very natural. We stepped into little rock pools, with continuous showers of water splattering on our faces, and also had the option to have a little swim in the clear waters! It was especially relaxing and refreshing as we took a little dip in the clear waters before ending our 4D3N trip!

How to Get to Surabaya, East Java?

1. By an international flight to Surabaya, Indonesia

An International flight to Surabaya, Indonesia from Singapore takes around 2.5 hours. There are many budget airlines that fly to Surabaya and my direct round trip flight from Singapore costs about INR9,000 (S$160).

2. Take a ferry from Bali to Surabaya

I’m sure Bali is no stranger to anyone who’s heard of Indonesia. It is another popular tourist destination that is, fortunately, really close to the beautiful East Java. If you’re planning for a trip to Bali already, why not extend it for a few more days to explore East Java too? From western Bali, travel by a 45-minutes ferry to the eastern tip of Java before driving west towards Surabaya. It costs around INR35 (RP6,500). You can choose to return from Surabaya or otherwise, from Bali if that’s where you booked your return flight from!

Best Time to Visit Surabaya, East Java

The best time to visit Surabaya is from May till September. It is the dry season then as compared to October to April when there will be heavy rainfall and high temperature.

How to Get Around Surabaya, East Java?

The best way to get around Surabaya in my opinion is to hire a local driver who can bring you around. Especially because of the long drives and the difference in languages, I think this is the best option to enjoy a relaxed trip.

Locals would know where to bring you to get the best local experiences, and at the same time, drive you around safely on the busy roads.

However, do take note to read reviews and sign up for the right guides as some are really just there to profit. I signed up for a private tour package with one of the local tour groups in Surabaya. It was recommended by one of my friends and we ended up being really great friends even after the trip ended years ago!

Surabaya also does have an extensive city bus network, with normal buses and patas buses (express). Although it is very affordable at around INR 30 (6,000 RP) per trip, I feel that it may not be ideal for a tourist because of the early mornings you need to get to places. Public transport may not be available at that time to cater to your itinerary. Also, you would need to be on your guard for pickpockets as buses can get really crowded.

Surabaya_Ijen_Sulphur_Blue_Flames

On your visit to Surabaya and adjoining places, you must go well prepared. It is important that you carry along with all the essentials for this trip

8 Things to Pack for Surabaya, East Java

An important element of the Surabaya travel guide is the information regarding what to pack. I would advise you to carry along the 8 things mentioned below.

Layered clothes for the diverse weather changes and for getting wet in

A lightweight down jacket to keep you warm during the morning hikes

Hiking shoes

Slippers or waterproof shoes

Sunglasses or Eye Masks (to protect yourself against the windy mountains)

A poncho or a raincoat if you prefer to remain dry

A waterproof pouch for your mobile phone

A great camera to capture the awesome views, and probably a tripod to get a full group shot of you and your travel mates!

Budgeting for Surabaya, East Java

A trip to Surabaya can be very cost-effective in my opinion. Being from and travelling from Singapore, I found the entire region to be quite reasonably priced.

The tour package I signed up for was a 2-pax 4D3N private tour package that costs my friend and I approximately INR 20,000 (S$350) in total. It includes:

Airport pick-up and drop-off

A specially curated itinerary recommended by the local tour guide catered to the amount of time we had in Surabaya. Our time was really well spent to the last minute!

Accommodations for the next 3 nights

Transport and a local driver that took great care of us for the next 4 days

Tour guides for each of the hikes

Take note that the package does not cover international flight costs and food expenses. The costs of International flights really depend on where you take off from. I personally would recommend combining your trip with a few days trip to Singapore as flights in and out of Singapore to Surabaya are really affordable!

Food is really affordable in Indonesia as well. I recommend preparing around INR500 to INR1,000 (S$10 to S$15) per person and that should be enough for a great local meal!

Surabaya Indonesia – Your Quick Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

Seen mostly as a gateway destination to exotic Bali or to majestic Mount Bromo and also recognized largely as a business hotspot, Surabaya on the coast of Java in Indonesia has more than initially meets the eye. Unassuming, humble and welcoming, this small city with its colonial-style architecture offers visitors a pleasant and relaxing stay.

Why go to Surabaya

Surabaya offers travellers an ideal destination to unwind for a day or two away from the congestion and traffic jams of Jakarta , before grabbing their tropical sundresses or pineapple-motif swimwear and making an enthusiastic beeline for the golden shores of Bali. For the more adventurous, this spot is also the perfect entry point for travellers wanting to don their hiking boots to conquer the summit of the resplendent Mount Bromo.

This city is best enjoyed by travellers who aren’t seeking too much action or exhilaration, and Surabaya is for the most part, a moderately quiet destination with r elatively few attractions .

Relaxing sights and activities for those in Surabaya to indulge in include a leisurely wander around Old Chinatown where travellers can observe the Chinese influence, take interesting photographs and learn more about the history of the city. One can also partake in a city tour, wander around museums and monuments, and visit a working factory when visiting the House of Sampoerna cigarette factory. A fun attraction is also a visit to the Monumen Kapal Selam, which is an old Russian Whiskey class submarine that now stands on the riverbank and makes an excellent spot for a picnic.

History buffs might enjoy a visit to The Heroes Monument which is a dedicated monument for all those who died during the Battle of Surabaya in 1945. For those craving more greenery than concrete, head on over to Bungkul Park for a picnic, a skate session or a tranquil walk around while tasting the scrumptious dishes at the local street-food carts.

When to go to Surabaya

Although the average temperature in Surabaya doesn’t really vary all that much, visitors may want to avoid the rainy season which occurs from November to April. June to October are probably the most ideal months to visit in terms of rainfall, humidity and temperatures and offer tourists the smallest chance of getting rained on during your stay.

Where to stay in SUrabaya

Being Indonesia’s second largest city as well as a destination for an interesting variety of travellers – businessmen, backpackers heading to Bali, or travellers heading to the slopes of Mount Bromo Surabaya boasts accommodations to suit all these needs and niches in the market. Fortunately, as a result of Surabaya having relatively quiet roads with little traffic, means that transmuting around the city presents little issues and so travellers are free to stay in whichever area they like. From backpacker hotels and budget-friendly guesthouses all the way to majestic, colonial-style architecture at the stunning Hotel Majapahit, Surabaya has all the bases covered no matter what your needs and preferences are for finding a spot to crash for the night.

At the very cheapest and most basic of the range, travellers can expect a squat toilet, a bucket of cold water to wash and a fan. Pretty primitive for sure, but the very cheap price might make the lower-end accommodations attractive to those with strict budgets. At the higher-end, guests can expect top-notch facilities, stunning décor and meticulous attention to detail. As the old adage goes, “You get what you pay for” and this is perfectly evident here in Surabaya.

Where and what to eat in Surabaya

Although Surabaya has a generous scattering of international restaurants and fast food chains, the city also has a surprisingly abundant selection of culinary specialties that the more adventurous eaters will thoroughly enjoy sampling. Plus, fortunately food as a rule is mostly very affordable.

Be sure to try Surabay’s national dish, Lontong balap; which is a hearty, brown, beef soup with bean sprouts, fried tofu, Japanese rice cakes (longtong), fried mung bean cake (lento), and topped with crispy shallots. Unique to east Java rujak cingur is a spicy salad containing raw fruits and vegetables; and a spicy gravy with the key ingredient being sweet, beef lips.

For travellers wanting to stick to street vendors, you’ll be delighted to learn that Surabaya is famous for Tahu Tek, a famous supper omelet made from scrambled eggs and bean curd that gets deep fried and then topped with a savory peanut gravy. The special aspect of this dish is that it can only be found after sunset when the street vendors will hit their bamboo dong to attract hungry people and lure them from their houses and into the streets for dinner.

How to get around Surabaya

Getting around Surabaya over short distances can be done via a taxi or renting a car.

Taxi companies are not known for their reliability or dependability and travelers should attempt sticking to fares that are solely dictated by the meter. Expect to pay around IDR 40,000 for a one-way taxi ride across the city and roughly IDR 100,000 for a trip to the airport. Also, hailing a taxi rather than calling for one will save you the IDR 10,000 to IDR 25,000 phone fare that most taxi companies in Surabaya charge.

Becaks (a cycle rickshaw) can all also be used for short distances and many tourists enjoy this authentic and traditional Indonesian mode of transport for its olden-day charm.

Buses and bemos (Indonesia’s classic open-aired minibuses) are also useful means of getting around the city and can frequently be used for longer distances across Surabaya.

How to get to and from Surabaya

Getting into and out of Surabaya is possible via plane, train and bus.

Surabaya’s Juanda Airport (SUB) is Indonesia’s second busiest airport and is situated around 25 kilometres south of the town itself. This airport has very frequent domestic flights to the capital, Jakarta and other main Indonesian cities; as well as several international flights to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Guangzhou and Bandar Seri Begawan. Once arriving at Surabaya’s Juanda Airport the journey into the heart of the city will take around 45 minutes in a taxi and will cost roughly IDR 100, 000.

The second option of travelling into or out of Surabaya is via train. The city has two primary train stations situated in the city of Surabaya itself: Gubeng, which transports passengers towards destinations in the east, south and west on Java’s southern train line; and Pasar Turi, which transports passengers towards Semarang and Jakarta via Java’s northern train line.

The former station, Gubeng , is generally the most used station by travellers with Parsar Turi only really taking travelers to Semarang on a 4 and a half hour journey at around IDR 90,000. This station also costs much less than Gubeng station to Jakarta at roughly IDR 165,000 almost half the price for this +- 12 hour journey.

Gubeng station’s most popular routes include, Surabaya to Banyuwangi which takes around 7 hours and costs roughly IDR 65,000; and Surabaya to Yogyakarta which takes 5 hours and also costs around IDR 65,000. 12 hour overnight buses from Surabaya are also possible to Bandung at around IDR 235,000 for a one-way journey; and a slightly longer, 12 and a half hour bus ride to Jakarta at about IDR 305,000.

Another mode of transport is the several frequent bus connections and minivans that connect Surabaya with other areas in Java and elsewhere. The major bus terminal in Surabaya is in Purabaya/Bungurasih situated roughly 13 kilometres south of the town. Getting to the station is as easy as flagging down one of the many buses heading to Purabaya and paying the IDR 3,000 bus fare. An IDR 4,000 taxi ride will also get you to the station from the city centre in Surabaya.

The popular shorter routes such as the 2 hour journey to Malang (IDR 11,600), and the 2 hour journey to Probolinggo (IDR 12,500) are very frequent and so there is no need to book in advance. An advance booking of one of the longer-haul buses however, is recommended; such as the 18 hour journey to Bundung at around IDR 106,500; and the 14 hour journey to Padang Bai which costs roughly IDR 70,000 for a one-way ticket.

Is Surabaya a safe place to visit?

Much like any busy city, it remains important to travel with caution and to be careful in one’s new and foreign surroundings as Surabaya has a reputation for having a moderate to mid-crime rate. Travellers should be cautious when crossing busy intersections and should avoid walking in the streets at night due to potholes and unsavory characters.

Situated at the mouth of the Brantas River, the city also serves as the primary navy base of Indonesia.

Derived from the terms 'suro' (shark) and 'boyo' (crocodile) in Javanese, 'Surabaya'implies courage to face the coming danger that threatens. The city has a fair share of its history and an era of colonial grace that can be treasured in diverse areas.

With crowded highways and skyscrapers soaring high blended with old colonial buildings bordering tree-lined boulevards and age-old traditions of Surabaya's many inhabitants, this metropolitan city is a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity.

Due to its close proximity to the equator, Surabaya experiences tropical climate all year round. This implies that with temperatures keeping at a comfortable level throughout the year, you can enjoy several activities and extreme weather won't slow you down!

With pensive little corners of interest, Surabaya is a city best to be explored on foot. Visit the Arab Quarters for their fascinating shops and narrow alleywaysevocative of the Middle Eastern feel; or simply take a walk through Indonesia's biggest Chinatown and explore more than a century old temples - historic and military monuments galore at Surabaya. Visit the Ampel Mosque to get enticed by the architecture and history of this religious site.

You cannot afford to miss out on the House of Sampoerna, a museum that houses local exhibits on Surabaya, as well as the operational cigarette production factory. Watching workers hand-rolling kretek (cigarettes) is the main attraction here.

A trip to Surabaya Zoo, supposedly the oldest and biggest in Southeast Asia, is an important part of Surabaya tourism . Besides more typical species, this well-laid-out zoo has an exceptionally maintained aquarium and aviary, along with a decent collection of nocturnal animals.

In addition to the historical and cultural sites within the city, one will also come across dozens of mall and plazas dotting the crumbling town. Shopping in Surabaya is limited to the glitzy malls and traditional local markets where one can shop primarily for designer handbags, batik (wax print) sarongs, Indonesian textiles, or bamboo handicrafts amongst others. Our Guide to What to Do in Surabaya

surabaya indonesia travel

To be honest, I didn’t really know anything about Surabaya before coming here. It wasn’t on any wish list and we only ended up here as we wanted to see more of Indonesia and it was actually cheaper to fly Lombok – Surabaya – Jakarta – Singapore than any other combination (or flying direct) to Singapore from Lombok. It turns out Surabaya is a big hub.

Our  guide book only had half a page on Surabaya so that didn’t help either and blogs on the topic are also solely lacking.

Surabaya Heroes Monument entrance

Surabaya Heroes Monument entrance

Instead of turning us off from visiting Surabaya, it made us more intrigued. It’s fun to visit places that seem more unknown.

For you, though, it won’t be so unknown! Below you will find our guide to what to do in Surabaya, where to stay, information about visiting Surabaya with kids and other useful information we learned during our stay.

Best things to do in Surabaya

Surabaya is not a city filled with tourist attractions. However, there are enough places to visit in Surabaya to easily fill a day or two.

Submarine Museum (Monkasel)

Submarine Museum (Monkasel

The big submarine

Close to the heart of Surabaya, on the bank of the Kalimas river, is Monkasel (short for Monumen Kapal Selam), home to the KRI Pasopati. The KRI Pasopati is a former Russian submarine, in service in the Indonesian Navy from 1962 to 1990 and now it’s retired you can climb all through it! Surely it is one of the most fun things to do in Surabaya.

The submarine is not big, and at 76 metres long you’ll be through it in 10 minutes, maybe less. There’s not a lot to see or read but it is cool to look at. The submarine is little altered from its time in service (there were still labels in Russian everywhere) and it still has an oily smell throughout making it feel (to me) like it had only just stopped being used.

We all enjoyed our visit – it’s not every day you get to see something like this so close to its original state. It was well worth the effort to go.

In addition to the submarine there is a video room with a 15 minute video shown on the hour. Unfortunately, we just missed it. There’s also a small playground and a kiosk selling water, drinks and snacks. Entry is 10,000 Rupiah per person (no discount for kids).

House of Sampoerna

Cigarette columns make sure you know you're at a cigarette factory at the House of Sampoerna.

Cigarette columns make sure you know you’re at a cigarette factory at the House of Sampoerna.

The House of Sampoerna is a cigarette factory with a museum attached. Originally a Dutch colonial orphanage it was bought in 1923 by the founder of the Sampoerna cigarette company, Liem Seeng Tee. Part of the complex was coverted into a small museum and visitor centre.

The museum covers the history of Sampoerna and the rags to riches story of Liem Seeng Tee as well as looking at their most famous product, kretuk cigarettes (which have cloves in the tobacco). Although small, it is well laid out and interesting and even the kids were interested in the different things on display.

The highlight has to on the upper level. From here you get a view of the factory floor, watching women (they’re all women) roll and pack cigarettes. On the same level, behind glass is a crack team of rollers and packers at work up close. It was amazing to watch. One packer was going so fast it was like watching footage of someone being played at high speed. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed.

The whole thing was impressive and in spite of myself I wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes. We used it as an opportunity to talk to the kids about why smoking is bad.

The House of Sampoerna is one of the better tourist attractions in Surabaya. We all enjoyed our visit, especially watching the rolling and packing in action, and are glad we came. It’s up there with the submarine for our favourite tourist attraction in Surabaya. And it is free.

Surabaya Heritage Track

While you are at House of Sampoerna, you can also go on a cheap one hour bus tour of the city.  They leave at 9am, 1pm and 3pm. Unfortunately, I can’t give personal details of this tour. We are still bitter as our taxi driver ripped us off by driving straight past House of Sampoerna and then spent 20 minutes driving back – meaning we pulled up just as the 9am tour was leaving.

Qubah and Masjid Ampel

The very souq like part of the Qubah market district.

The very souq like part of the Qubah market district.

Islam came to Java through Arabic traders. The Qubah district of Surabaya is their legacy.

Qubah is a market area that features what Lonely Planet describes as a “Damascene” souq and is home to one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, the Ampel Mosque (Masjid Ampel).

In general, the Qubah area is like so many other market districts I’ve been to around the world. Lots of small shops buying and selling just about anything you could want to buy. Especially dates – they were everywhere (and tasty, too).

The streets get more narrow and motorised transport is banned the closer you get to the mosque. The way to the mosque is well signed so you can’t get lost although you might get distracted by the shops and food.

Masjid Ampel is roughly 600 years old. Originally built of local wood the mosque has been extended with the original structure incorporated into its current form. It was built in honour of Sunan Ampel, one of the earliest Arabic traders and Islamic preachers to make it to Java. It honours his work in bringing and spreading Islam to Java. He and his wife are buried behind the mosque and their graves are a point of pilgrimage for the devout from around Indonesia.

The inside of the Ampel Mosque. This is in one of the newer parts.

The inside of the Ampel Mosque. This is in one of the newer parts.

I was approached by someone who offered to show me around, wanting nothing and simply keen to share his mosque with me. We went to the mosque’s office to get a shawl like thing to cover my legs for which there was no charge. He ask I not enter the mosque itself – so I didn’t – but I could see inside. The mosque is simple, many wooden pillars and prayer mats on what looked like a marble or polished stone floor.

I was led down the side of the mosque to a guestbook and a donation box where I was asked to sign but not pressured to donate and then through a gate to the grave area. It was a solemn but bustling place with over one hundred people praying and many coming and going. No one seemed to mind me there but I didn’t feel right taking pictures.

Nearby the mosque’s office is the entrance to the souq like portion of the market. While I’ve not been to Damascus the undercover part of the market – a narrow corridor lines with shops either side – does feel what I’d imagine an Arab souq to feel like. It has a very different feel to markets I’ve seen elsewhere.

A mosque and a market aren’t everyone’s thing although for it was worth checking out. I’m not sure that bringing Z would have been a good idea (S would have been interested and could have been respectful). It’s an interesting area and different from what I’ve seen before.

Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlwan)

The Heroes Monument

The Heroes Monument

The Heroes monument is dedicated to those who died in the Battle of Surabaya, which started on the 10th of November, 1945. The monument is a obelisk just over 41 metres tall with a large patch of grass out the front. In that regard it is good for kids, there is plenty of space to run around.

There’s a museum behind the obelisk featuring a few exhibits from Indonesia’s struggle for independence with a focus on the Battle of Surabaya (where Indonesian fighters drove out British and Indian army units before being themselves driven out after three days of intense fighting, something not mentioned in the museum). Exhibits are labelled in Indonesian and English but there’s not much to see and the second floor of exhibits was closed. I found the museum interesting but its not for everyone, especially as there’s little to see.

Outside there’s an armoured car, field gun and some heavy mortars used during the battle that you can climb on and pose for photos with, which is fun.

Despite there not being a lot to see I found my visit interesting. Given the historical significance of the Battle of Surabaya if you’re thinking about what to do in Surabaya then the Heroes Monument is worth considering.

There are gates at each side of the monument but they’re locked. The only entrance is from the front. Entrance to the museum is 5000 rupiah. Everything else is free.

A few blocks from the river lies this unique mosque, different from all other mosques we’ve seen in Surabaya. The mosque is built in a Chinese style, looking more like a Buddhist house of worship than an Islamic one. The mosque is named after the famous Chinese admiral Zheng He who had sailed to Java early in the 15th century. The mosque was built in 2001 in honour of his exploits and his contribution to Islam in Java.

The mosque is quite small and is swamped by the school that almost entirely surrounds it. You should have your knees and shoulders (and head if female) covered but there wasn’t anyone around to get a sarong or shawl from when I was there. The mosque is so small you can see all the way through it anyway.

It won’t take a lot of time to see but the Cheng Hoo mosque is one of the more unique places to go in Surabaya and worth a stop if you’re close by.

Chinatown/Kyu Kyu

The entrance to Kyu Kyu, Surabaya's Chinatown

The entrance to Kyu Kyu, Surabaya’s Chinatown

The top of Jelan Kembang Jepus is the start of Surabaya’s Chinatown. In the evening, after 8pm street food vendors converge here preparing food freshly bought from the nearby markets. I got there at lunch time and other than a dragon bearing gate there wasn’t much in the way of visible Chinese influence or street food – maybe I was looking in the wrong spot.

While I was here at the wrong time of the day, I have to say I was disappointed in what I did see. If you’re sightseeing in Surabaya in the evening it might be worth checking it out otherwise I’d give it a miss.

Museum Mpu Tantular

This history museum is located south of the city centre and could be worth a look with some extra time. More information here .

Ciputra Waterpark

With another day in Surabaya, we would have headed to Ciputra Waterpark which is located on the outskirts of Surabaya and sounds like the perfect place to cool down. Find more information here .

Surabaya with kids

Surabaya with kids at the Submarine Museum

The kids LOVED the Submarine Museum

Surabaya is an easy place to visit with kids. It’s a modern city with cheap taxis to get around, many eating options and some great hotels. I wouldn’t call it somewhere I would rush to visit with kids, but it is definitely not somewhere to avoid. In addition to the above activities, there is also the Surabaya Zoo and many shopping centres (which are seemingly everywhere) have kids’ play areas.

We opted not to visit Surabaya Zoo. A quick google will show you why! It has a terrible track record for how it keeps its animals and we didn’t want to visit somewhere that sounded so cruel.

For toddlers and young preschoolers, this collection of rides and play areas in Tunjungan Plaza is sure to be a hit. There are some train, boat and car rides, and two different play areas.

Best places to stay in Surabaya

We stayed at the Wyndham Surabaya (formerly the Pullman Surabaya) which was a big hit with us!

Pullman Surabaya room

Our room at the Pullman Surabaya

For only AUD$100 a night, we stayed in a deluxe king room at this 5 star city hotel. Our room was very spacious and we liked how the bathroom had a window between the bathroom and the bedroom. There was also a great desk area, a fridge, safe, gown and fantastic wifi. Our kids were free in our room.

There are also many restaurants, a great pool area, fitness centre and other facilities you would expect in a great hotel. Although everything was good and I can not fault much, I would not describe it as 5 star. More like 4 – 4.5 star. For the price, however, I am certainly not complaining!

It is a great place to stay just a short walk to Tunjungan Plaza (or they have a free shuttle there) which gave us many eating and shopping options. There is also a supermarket super close.

The staff were great when we needed a doctor for our daughter too. It was all arranged quickly and efficiently. They came to us and gave us medicine, all for only about 350,000 rupiah!

Getting to Surabaya

We came to Surabaya from Lombok. There are plenty of flights, just like there is from Bali to Surabaya. In fact, Surabaya is one of the biggest air hubs in Indonesia so there are flights here from many places.

From Lombok, it was a quick 55 minute flight. We flew Garuda Indonesia which was great and only AUD$50 per person (not on sale). We were especially impressed when we were given food and the kids were given a choice of toys.

If you are going from Surabaya to Bali or vice versa, you can also travel overland via bus and boat. If you do this, consider stopping over at  Kawah Ijen .

Getting around Surabaya

Surabaya rickshaw

We found rickshaws around many attractions

We used taxis and cyclo rickshaws to get around Surabaya. These are cheap and usually plentiful. If you are off a main road, however, you may want to get the attraction to ring for a taxi for you.

The taxis used metres without a problem. However, we had a few go way out of the way of where we were going. One in particular really tried to rip us off and I hate to think what would have happened had I not had google maps and checked where we were going. This was especially annoying as the drive took twice as long as it should have and we just missed the heritage tour we wanted to do.

From the airport, there are many people offering taxis from a counter as soon as you exit the luggage area. It cost us 150,000 rupiah to get into town which was cheaper and nicer than the metre taxi we took back to the airport.

No Surabaya city guide would be complete without mentioning the city’s Cyclo-rickshaws. Cyclo rickshaws are plentiful in busy areas like Qubah or malls. Prices seemed to be in increments of 10,000 rupiah (maybe to keep things simple as many of the cyclo drivers spoke no English, it’s probably cheaper for locals) and some discussion might be needed to get a reasonable price. They’re reasonably comfortable and efficient for short trips as they dart in and out of traffic and take shortcuts taxis can’t.

Surabaya is pleasant to explore on foot, but not easy. Busy roads have decent, wide, smooth sidewalks however turn down smaller roads and these disappear. It can be hard enough without young kids as you avoid parked and moving vehicles and puddles. It was harder with our 3 and 5 year olds. Strollers would be nigh on impossible to use in many areas.

We spent about AUD$170 a day over our two nights in Surabaya which is not bad when you consider our accommodation was just over AUD$100 a night. This also included a relatively expensive room service dinner, all sightseeing and a lot of taxis. It would be easy to spend less.

Our verdict

Submarine Museum Monkasel

Exploring the submarine

Despite not being a lot to see in Surabaya there was enough that we’re glad we made the stop. For a city of more than four million people it is easy enough to get around and nice to explore, by foot, cycle and taxi. The list of tourist attractions in Surabaya is not a long one and it’s understandable if you give the place a miss.

However if you are passing through then there’s some great things to see in Surabaya and its worth spending a day sightseeing if you can. The House of Sampoerna and the submarine at Monkasel really were worth the effort as I’ve not seen anything like them before.

For us, Surabaya was a great entry point to the bustle and energy of the island of Java.

Travel Tips

Best things to do in Surabaya, Indonesia

Most travellers skip Surabaya in favour of its bigger brother on the western side of Java, Jakarta. But don’t be so quick to dismiss this historic city filled with interesting nuggets

Story By SilverKris

Published On November 3, 2017 Updated On September 13, 2021

With an estimated population of 9.2 million people, Surabaya, located on the eastern side of Java, is the second largest city in the country. It is in Surabaya that the country’s battle for independence began and because of this, it is known as the “birth nation” of Indonesia. Locals call it Kota Pahlawan (City of Heroes) and this city is filled with statues commemorating the fight for independence.

1. Suroboyo Monument

The name of the city, Surabaya, is believed to be derived from two ancient Sanskrit words: sura, which means shark, and baya, which means crocodile. Legend has it that the city was founded after a battle between a shark and a crocodile, which you will see represented in the form of sculptures at this monument (below). It is located near the entrance to Surabaya Zoo.

2. Bromo Midnight Tour

One of the most popular activities here is the Bromo Midnight Tour . Mount Bromo is an active volcano in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and has exquisite landscapes that are a photographer’s dream. The midnight tour gives visitors the chance to view the sunrise at Mount Pananjakan. Most tour operators will suggest the option of staying overnight, but if you don’t have time, there are options for a full “day” tour. This generally includes you getting picked up at midnight and eventually returning at 1pm. Whatever you do, make sure that you add this to your list of activities: it’s spectacular. Note: Mount Pananjakan is closed to visitors till December 10 as renovations are being made to the facilities, so do check before you go.

3. Kartiko at Pasar Atum

It’s small, busy and it takes a long time until you get what ordered – but the food is worth the wait. Kartiko is located inside the Pasar Atum mall and is known for its vast array of traditional food. Locals come here to buy supplies for home, but many also get their meals. Klepon is a traditional boiled rice cake filled with liquid palm sugar and then rolled in grated coconut. Tahu isi is tofu filled with beans, carrots and sometimes meat, deep fried and eaten with cabai rawit (bird’s eye chilli). It’s also sold at street stalls across the city but Kartiko’s tahu isi are most popular. Take 30 minutes out of your schedule to grab a stool, try a new dish and people watch. You’ll leave more than fulfilled.

4. Suramadu National Bridge

This is one of the longest bridges in South-east Asia, spanning a distance of 5.4km. It connects Java with the island of Madura, and is historic as it was the first bridge to cross the Madura Strait. It’s especially magical to see at night as it is lit up with multi-coloured lights.

5. Hotel Majapahit

Built in 1910, this colonial-style building surrounded by magnificent gardens is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Just going to take a picture won’t suffice – you have to make an appointment for high tea. Tea is served from 12pm until 6pm and comes with an assortment of delicious cakes, snacks and little treats that will make you feel very posh.

6. Monumen Kapal Selam

Visitors may be surprised that there’s a Russian war submarine in Surabaya. Used by the Indonesian navy until 1990, the submarine was later decommissioned and is now a museum, located in a landscaped park. You can climb aboard, literally, and tour the sub to get some great insights into the history of Indonesia’s navy. After that, grab a cuppa at one of the cafes dotted around the park.

7. Taman Bungkul

The bustling city can be overwhelming at times and taking time out at Taman Bungkul is a great way to chill out. One of the main parks in the city, you’ll find people relaxing or catching up with friends here. It’s also the perfect place for an evening stroll should you feel like working off some of the delicious snacks you had during the day.

8. Chinatown

This Chinatown is one of the biggest in Indonesia, which makes it a must-visit. The main road, Jalan Karet, is filled with crumbling colonial architecture. As expected, you’ll find all sorts of Chinese-themed shops and restaurants here, and will certainly not leave empty-handed. Be sure that your phone is fully charged as the picture opportunities are endless.

9. Masjid Muhammad Cheng Hoo

A large number of the population in Surabaya are Chinese Indonesians. The Masjid Muhammad Cheng Hoo, or Cheng Hoo Mosque, is seen as a sacred monument dedicated to the Chinese who originally came to the city as traders, and is testament to just how well they have integrated into the local culture. With its signature bright red, yellow and green, it’s a powerful structure that could leave you entranced for hours as you soak in the serenity it exudes.

As Eid al-Fitr 1445 H festivities draw closer, Indonesians are again immersed in preparations for the Eid homecoming journey, known as " mudik ."The Ministry of Transportation ( Kemenhub ) of the Republic of Indonesia projects that the potential movement of people during the 2024 Eid season could reach 71.7% of Indonesia's population, or approximately 193.6 million people. With the mudik season and holidays drawing near, Traveloka, the leading travel platform in Southeast Asia, shares the trends for the 2024 Eid season.

Iko Putera, CEO of Transport at Traveloka , notes, "As the Eid holiday approaches, consumers began planning their trips as early as February. It's not just transportation; accommodation bookings are also on the rise, signaling the enduring popularity of staycations. Moreover, many consumers are taking advantage of the Eid period to visit various tourist attractions."

As part of its Eid holiday preparations, Traveloka is bolstering its infrastructure to ensure safe and comfortable travels for consumers. Iko explains, "Aligned with our commitment to excellent service, Traveloka collaborates closely with partners to ensure inventory availability across our comprehensive product range, including transportation (Flights, Trains, Bus & Travel), Accommodations, and Xperience. Our customer service team is also specially equipped to handle diverse needs and inquiries efficiently."

Traveloka's Eid Homecoming and Holiday Trends

Ground transportation options like Trains, Buses, and Travel (door-to-door shuttles) remain popular, especially for inter-island travel within Java. Searches for Bus & Travel during Eid have increased nearly twelvefold, while Train searches have risen over thirtyfold compared to the previous month. Top domestic destinations for ground travel include Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Malang, Bandar Lampung, and Padang. To address the heightened demand during the homecoming season, Traveloka has collaborated with Cititrans to introduce new bus routes such as Jakarta - Semarang - Solo - Yogyakarta and Jakarta - Surabaya - Malang, accessible through the Traveloka website or app.

Internal data from Traveloka indicates varying peak periods for both the homecoming and return journeys, based on ticket purchases. For Flights, peak departures will be on April 5-6, 2024, with returns peaking on April 14-15, 2024. Trains will see its peak departure period from April 5-8, 2024, and returns beginning on April 13-15, 2024. Similarly, Bus & Travel surge in departures will be between April 3-8, 2024, with returns peaking on April 13-15, 2024.

Following the increase in transportation searches, there was a surge of over 50% in accommodation searches during the Eid holiday, compared to the previous month. Four-star hotels were particularly popular, whether for city staycations or out-of-town getaways. Key destinations for accommodation searches during the Eid homecoming and holiday period in 2024 included Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, and Malang. Traveloka also noted a nearly 50% rise in interest in international accommodations during the Eid holiday week compared to the preceding week. Asian countries such as Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Hong Kong emerged as top destinations for the 2024 Eid holiday period.

During the Eid holiday, many individuals explore various tourist attractions, as evidenced by the doubling of searches for amusement parks and recreational areas. While residents of Jakarta typically venture outside the city or even abroad during Eid vacations, the city becomes a sought-after destination for those residing elsewhere, drawn by the relatively affordable transportation costs. This trend results in an increase in tourists from beyond Jakarta visiting popular spots such as Dufan - Ancol, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, and Kidzania, along with other attractions like the Kecak Dance at Pura Uluwatu in Bali and Jatim Park in Malang. Moreover, there has been a twofold increase in demand for tour packages, with destinations like Labuan Bajo, Kintamani, the Thousand Islands, Ubud, and Borobudur (Punthuk Setumbu) emerging as top choices.

Easy travel with Traveloka

To accommodate the surge in traffic during the homecoming and Lebaran holidays, Traveloka has partnered with Kopi Kenangan along with well-known shuttle services, Jackal Holidays and Areon. This collaboration offers consumers a selection of convenient pick-up and drop-off locations, enhancing accessibility and convenience. Consumers can choose to depart from the Virtual Point at Kopi Kenangan Shell Kesambi (Cirebon) with Jackal Holidays, heading to Jackal Holidays' Bandung pool (Dipati Ukur & Pasteur), or departing from Kopi Kenangan Antapani (Bandung) with Areon, bound for the Areon pool in Jakarta (Setiabudi & Kuningan area).

The journey will be even more delightful with fresh drinks from Kopi Kenangan. Customers can enjoy their favorite beverages while waiting for shuttle pickup at strategic locations in cities such as Bandung and Cirebon, two top destinations for land transportation, especially shuttle services.

Ananditha Mayasari, AVP, Head of Marketing, Kopi Kenangan, said, "We're delighted to join forces with Traveloka to aid travelers during the Lebaran 2024 homecoming season. This partnership also aligns with Kopi Kenangan's commitment to offering outlets at key points along the homecoming route, such as rest areas along the Java Island toll road, providing travelers with a comforting break during their long journey."

Traveloka goes beyond providing travel solutions by offering innovative products, features, and attractive deals to meet consumer needs such as the Promo Rama dan Kenyamanan the Rama and Comfort Promo program. The program offers discounts of up to 50% on various travel products, including Flights, Accommodations, Buses, Trains, and Xperience, available on the Traveloka app and website until April 21, 2024.

Recognizing the heightened interest in international travel and the associated risks, including visa issues, Traveloka introduces the Visa Protection feature. Travelers can rest assured that if their visa is rejected, Traveloka will refund 100% of the travel costs, subject to terms and conditions.
