Tour operator - list, experiences, tips, book cheap
by Sascha Tegtmeyer
With the choice of the tour operator or travel agent, the vacation stands or falls. In particular, those who book a package tour must have great confidence in the company planning their vacation. Below I have listed some providers that are active in Europe.
As a traveler or vacationer, you basically have two options: Either you book a trip individually by booking flights, Hotels , transfers and other services search and book themselves. Or you trust a tour operator or travel agent when planning your holiday, from whom you buy a package tour or individual products.
In Germany alone there are 3.089 tour operators with a turnover of 12,5 billion euros (2020 - in the previous year 2019 35,4 billion euros) per year. The largest tour operator in Germany is TUI with a turnover of 7,9 billion euros (as of 2020 - source: Statista.de ). Especially in times of Corona pandemic The concept of the package tour has proven itself: If problems arise at the holiday destination, the tour operator usually steps in and helps the holidaymaker to survive the crisis or to plan the return trip.
Depending on what type of crisis it is and what services travelers and holidaymakers have booked in advance, they can even claim reimbursement of the travel price. In the case of a private, individual booking, however, travelers are responsible for all services themselves and may have to deal with hotels and airlines themselves in crisis situations. Because of this, I would - maybe my most important Vacation tip currently - currently always recommend booking a package tour with a tour operator - or booking through a travel agent with a tour operator.
Because the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent is that travel agents only refer customers to a tour operator about their offers. Ultimately, it is the tour operator who plans the trip or vacation

For different preferences – Which tour operators are there?
Basically, for every preference and every type of travel, there is a suitable tour operator who specializes in exactly that. This makes it easy for travelers to contact a tour operator when planning their vacation, who will plan and organize the trip. Which tour operators are there? Different types of tour operators are presented below and their characteristics are described.
Traditional Tour Operators
Traditional tour operators are companies that plan and organize trips for their customers. They often offer vacation packages that include flights, accommodation and sometimes activities. These tour operators often have a wide variety of destinations and types of travel, and cater to a wide variety of interests and budgets. Some well-known traditional tour operators in Germany are TUI, FTI and Alltours.
specialist tour operator
Special tour operators concentrate on certain types of travel, regions or target groups. For example, there are tour operators who specialize in city trips or active trips. Others are aimed at specific target groups such as families or seniors. These tour operators often offer special know-how and a wide range of trips for their specific target group or type of travel. Well-known special tour operators are, for example, StaTravel for student trips or ADAC Reisen for tours with a mobile home.
Online Tour Operator
Online tour operators are tour operators who sell their tours over the Internet. Customers can conveniently book and plan trips from home. Many online tour operators offer a wide variety of trips at great prices because they don't have the high cost of running travel agencies. Well-known online tour operators are Booking.com, Expedia and Opodo.
individual tour operator
Individual tour operators are tour operators who offer individually tailored trips. These tour operators often work with local suppliers to provide a tailor-made trip for the customer. These operators offer more flexible travel planning and can accommodate special requests and needs. Well-known individual tour operators are, for example, Tourlane or itravel.
There are a variety of tour operators that offer different types of travel and specialize in different target groups and types of travel. Anyone planning a trip has a wide range of tour operators to choose from and can choose the one that best suits their needs and desires. Whether one chooses a traditional tour operator, a specialist tour operator, an online tour operator or an individual tour operator depends on personal preferences and travel needs. However, it is worth comparing different operators and checking the offers carefully in order to book the best trip at a great price.
FAQs – Tour operators and travel agents – the most important questions and answers
If you are looking for a reputable and sustainable tour operator, travel agent, travel provider or an online travel booking platform, you certainly have many questions - for example where is the best place to book a holiday? I have put together the most important questions and answers on the subject of tour operators for you.
Who is the best tour operator?
There are numerous good and popular tour operators in Germany. My personal best tour operator is FTI Touristik. I have booked through this travel agent very often and have had very good experiences so far. In terms of booking numbers and turnover, TUI is the most popular tour operator in Germany. My personal ranking of the best tour operators looks like this: 1. FTI tourism 2. Meier's world travel 3.TUI 4 before flight 5. Neckermann Travel 6. Dertour 7. Alltours 8. ITS travel 9. Schauinsland travel 10. VTours
Which other tour operators are there?
The big tour operator Thomas Cook has gone bankrupt. Many travelers ask themselves: "Which tour operators are still there?" A selection of tour operators that are still active on the market are: 1. FTI tourism 2. Meier's world travel 3.TUI 4 before flight 5. Neckermann Travel 6. Dertour 7. Alltours 8. ITS travel 9. Schauinsland travel 10. VTours
Which tour operator is the cheapest?
The Stiftung Warentest has in " test 01/2018 “Travel organizer tested. Schauinsland, FTI and Neckermann were the cheapest tour operators in this test. All other travel agents were more expensive. Neckermann also did well in the area of sustainability.
How is a package tour defined?
By definition, a package tour is characterized by the fact that a tour operator sells at least two travel services as a bundle - such as flight and hotel, but also food, leisure activities and transfer. Of course, more than two travel services can also be sold. The traveler pays a flat rate for the services offered.
Where can I book the cheapest package holidays?
The cheapest way to book package tours is to book them on the Internet at residual space exchanges. You have to be flexible and spontaneous and definitely be ready to leave in a day or two if in doubt. Often these are trips that have been canceled at short notice and would otherwise have been canceled. Some of these can be booked with a discount of up to 70 percent.
Where can I book package holidays?
Which travel company is still safe.
Most of the major tour operators in Germany are safe and won't go bankrupt anytime soon. If you want to be on the safe side, you should book with one of the large and established tour operators such as TUI, FTI or Meier's Weltreisen. These are usually well insured against bankruptcy.
Which tour operator is broke?
Every now and then a tour operator goes bankrupt - just like in any other industry. The British tour operator Thomas Cook went bankrupt in autumn 2019. For many travelers this was a disaster - even years later, many did not get the money back for their booked trips. The German subsidiaries of Thomas Cook were also affected by the bankruptcy.
Which tour operators are still in Germany?
- FTI tourism - Meier's world travel - TUI - 5 before flight - Neckermann Reisen - Dertour - Alltours - ITS travel - Schauinsland Reisen - VTours
Which travel portal?
The Computer picture has rated travel portals and compiled a ranking of the best travel portals that can be used for online travel booking: 1st place: Opodo - www.opodo.de 2nd place: Expedia - www.expedia.de 3rd place: Thomas Cook - is insolvent 4th place: Check24 - www.check24.de 4th place: Holidaycheck - www.holidaycheck.de 6th place: Neckermann - www.neckermann-reisen.de 7th place: WEG - www.weg.de 8th place: TUI - www.tui.com 9th place: off on vacation - www.ab-in-den-urlaub.de Place 10: Alltours - www.alltours.de

Book with a reputable tour operator and travel agent
My detailed conclusion.
Many travelers and vacationers rightly swear by booking their trip on their own as an adventure vacation or an individual trip. That's perfectly okay. The package tour is considered a synonym for mass tourism and inexperienced cheap holidaymakers, especially among travel professionals. But that's at most half the story: For mine Travel Blog Since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, I have been booking Just-Wanderlust.com almost exclusively through tour operators or through travel agents with tour operators.
Because if something goes wrong in a crisis situation, the tour operator is there to take care of it. Corresponding insurance policies are often offered against Corona and even if there is a natural disaster at the holiday destination (think of the volcanic eruption on the Canary Island of La Palma), the tour operator in Germany is responsible.

Germany tours by region.
A visit to Germany delivers the European experience you’ve dreamed of: castles clinging to wooded mountaintops, grand cathedrals, riverside vineyards, sidewalk cafes on cobbled streets, and more. Savor the contrast of contemporary art and architecture with buildings and neighborhoods that have endured for hundreds of years. From picturesque villages to cosmopolitan cities, Germany will meet your appetite for adventure, history, culture, and fine cuisine. (All washed down with world-class beer and wine, of course!) Book one of our tours of Germany in the summer, and enjoy long days exploring this fascinating country's forests, towns, and cities. Take your Germany vacation in early winter, and visit the magical Christmas markets where you can sample local specialties and confections and shop a tempting array of handicrafts. Or experience Germany via a Rhine River cruise , castle-spotting from the comfort of your vessel’s deck as you drift past historic towns and bucolic farmland. From the cultural riches of the big cities to the natural wonders of the Bavarian Alps and the Black Forest, Germany offers something marvelous every way you turn.
Southern Germany & Bavaria
Southern Germany is a forested wonderland punctuated by old-world cities, picturesque villages, and captivating castles. In southeast Germany lies Bavaria , the largest state in Germany, where the world-famous Oktoberfest is celebrated each fall in Munich, the state capital. Lively beer halls beckon all year round – don’t miss Hofbräuhaus, dating from 1589 and the most famous. Munich is rich with attractions, including the Rathaus Glockenspiel, an elaborate clockwork display on the town hall, and the Munich Residenz, Germany's largest urban palace and former seat of Bavarian royalty. Wander Nuremberg’s cobbled streets, where castle ramparts and Gothic architecture evoke centuries past, visit the Christmas market if your timing is right. Just south, the Franconian Lake District attracts visitors for summer sailing and swimming. Overlooking the beautiful Bavarian forest, the Bavarian Alps, adjacent to Austria, are an international skiing and hiking destination. Enjoy stunning alpine views from the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle. The village of Oberammergau, renowned for its annual Passion Play , is another Bavarian Alp attraction. The woodlands stretch westward, where the mountainous Black Forest inspired the renowned Brothers Grimm fairytales. Prepare to be enchanted by farmhouses and fields, castles, and cuckoo clocks.
Eastern Germany
On your tour of Eastern Germany, encounter Berlin , one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. A UNESCO “City of Design,” Berlin hums with creative energy. Enjoy cafes, restaurants, glittering nightlife, and the Tiergarten, an expansive city park. You’ll also come face-to-face with the once-divided city’s turbulent history by visiting remnants of the Berlin Wall , Checkpoint Charlie, and landmarks of Berlin's East and West sections. From atop the Berlin TV Tower, marvel at the 360-degree views of the now-unified, modernized city. Back on the streets, you’ll see relics of history, including the Baroque cathedral, the neo-Baroque Reichstag building, and the Brandenburg Gate, an iconic 18th-century military monument. You’ll also see modern, cutting-edge architecture, edgy street art, and contemporary boutiques, and winter visitors can visit dozens of Christmas markets . Just two hours south lies elegant Dresden, a city rebuilt following devastating bombing during WWII, dotted with gorgeous Baroque facades. Visit the Zwinger Palace and Semper Opera house and the fully reconstructed Frauenkirche with one of the largest domes in Europe. Dresden hosts the world’s oldest Christmas market, dating back to 1434.
Central German Metropolitan Region
Central Germany is a metropolitan crossroads of commerce and history. Frankfurt's nickname is “Mainhattan,” referring to the Main River on which it lies and the dynamic skyline of this high-powered business hub. High-rises may dominate the views, but the city retains its historical flavor in the medieval center, where half-timber buildings and charming taverns line cobble-stone lanes. More medieval architecture beckons at the Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a fortified city east of Frankfurt. Once larger than Frankfurt and Munich, Rothenburg is encircled by an intact 14th-century wall with gates and towers. Enjoy the beautiful and authentic medieval market square lined with multi-story half-timber buildings. Rothenburg also has a seasonal Christmas market. West of Frankfurt, visit the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, located at the juncture of the Rhine and Main rivers. Named after Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable metal type, this museum about printing honors one of civilization’s landmark innovations. Right across the street, admire the massive red sandstone St. Martin’s Cathedral, a thousand years old. This Romanesque marvel is near the market square and is perfect for people-watching over coffee.
Western Germany & The Rhine Valley
In Western Germany, the Rhine River flows through scenic valleys dotted with terraced hillside vineyards, then passes through the dynamic metropolises of Cologne and Düsseldorf. Weaving through quaint towns and bucolic farmland, the Rhine River gazes up at a series of castles dramatically perched above – some in ruins, some housing museums, hotels, or restaurants. The Moselle Valley and the Moselle River , a tributary to the mighty Rhine, offer still more storybook castles, charming towns, spectacular vistas, and wine-tasting opportunities. This area is highly regarded for its white wines and Riesling grapes. After the gorgeous countryside of Rhineland, set your sights on the urban rewards of Cologne and Düsseldorf. The must-see High Gothic Cologne Cathedral is the tallest twin-spired church in the world at 515 feet and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. View the river and the old town center from a viewing platform on the south tower. Explore the Altstadt (old town) and see artifacts and ruins dating back to the Romans. Just north lies Düsseldorf, Germany’s capital of fashion and art, where galleries and elegant boutiques ensure world-class window shopping. Both Düsseldorf and Cologne host Christmas markets .

July and August are the busiest months for tourists in Europe , so outside of these times you will generally encounter fewer tourists.
May, June and September are considered pleasant times to travel as there are less crowds and the climate is comfortable. During these months, beer gardens and cafes bustle at all hours, outdoor events and festivals enliven cities and villages and hiking, cycling and swimming are popular pursuits.
Snow usually starts to fall in December, and winter travel to Germany is becoming increasingly popular, especially to the ski areas in the Bavarian Alps.
Autumn is the optimal time to enjoy romantic Germany. The foliage is turning golden and the climate is still agreeably mild for getting out and about.
Geography and environment
Located in Central Europe, Germany is bordered by:
- Switzerland
- Netherlands
- Czech Republic
The terrain found in the north of Germany is relatively flat, with the topography growing increasingly hilly moving south.
Southern Germany is characterized by mountain ranges and thick forest, with the Black Forest (on the French border) and the Bavarian Forest (on the Czech border) being the most well known forests in the south.
Germany has small pockets of alpine terrain with the Alps being Germany's highest mountains.
Top 3 contemporary art spots of Berlin
Centrally located and well-serviced by several public transport hubs, historic Mitte is one of the easiest places to view Berlin's killer art scene. See run-down buildings that have been transformed into galleries and hotels, wander down gritty laneways full of vibrant graffiti and feel the urban buzz of Berlin.
2. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg
Berlin's counter-culture is evident in the streets of this East Berlin borough, which is full of an eclectic range of hip galleries, innovative hotels, bohemian bars and vintage flea markets. This is the perfect place to gallery-hop, take snapshots and view the handiwork of some of the world's most iconic street artists.
3. Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery
After the triumphant fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 this section of the wall was adorned with colorful paintings and political murals, many reflecting the tone of this iconic time in Germany's history. A visit here reveals history in a way that no museum or book can.

Our Zicasso travel agent did an outstanding job of taking our various locations, preferences, and timeline to work with us to plan a very memorable trip. His recommendations based on his personal experiences living abroad made for a very special combination of high-quality accomodations, individualized driving tours, and personal restaurant referrals that were all as unique as they were of the highest quality. He was very flexible with any changes we wanted to make in the planning stage. He was extremely accessible no matter what time of day and arranged all tours and transportation logistics (planes, trains, and automobiles!) over the 10 days we were in Germany. We couldn't have been happier with our time there or his references, and were truly amazed by the incredible range of experiences we had over the course of our travels from north to south. It all went like clockwork!

This is our third trip booked through Zicasso. They make it very easy to find strong, reliable in-country travel agents. It’s a great service! We used a travel partner to plan our trip to Germany to see the Christmas markets. It was perfect. They selected great hotels that were perfectly located for walking to markets. The local guides for city tours were personable, knowledgeable, and engaging. Our itinerary was a great blend of seeing a lot, but not being overwhelmed. We visited Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, Rothenburg, and Munich, with some day trips to smaller towns. We did have some travel problems. Our inbound flight to Munich was canceled due to weather and a rail strike created a problem for our trip to Dresden. The travel agency was able to manage these events without any impact on our planned events. We rebooked flights into Berlin directly instead of taking a train from Munich, and they secured a private driver for the trip to Dresden on about 24 hours' notice. The travel team made these adjustments with minimal stress for us.

Zicasso’s travel company helped us plan and make land arrangements for our trip to Berlin, Prague, Chesky Krumlov, the Wachau Valley, Vienna, and Budapest. We had different needs for the areas we visited based on friends and family we planned to see, tour guide requests, accommodations we needed our travel agent to book, one place we wanted to book ourselves, and car and train transportation between destinations. The arrangements were not straightforward, but our travel agent was flexible. He came through and everything went beautifully as we navigated our itinerary. We had a fabulous time in Central Europe and are very appreciative of our travel team's efforts. Most important to us was the quality of our tour guides, their knowledge of history and culture, storytelling abilities, and enjoyable personalities. Our agent delivered beautifully on our requests for outstanding tour guides, especially in Prague, the Wachau Valley, and Budapest. In Prague and Budapest, we had seven-hour walking tours that were truly wonderful and memorable. Another of our agent’s strengths was recommending charming and comfortable boutique hotels. Highlight hotels he recommended were in Kreuzberg, Berlin, near our friend's home; the one in Prague with the adjacent, gorgeous, UNESCO World Heritage garden; and the one in Vienna. Finally, our travel team remained available to us by text message throughout our trip, answering any questions that came up and being a fun travel partner throughout our travels.

Zicasso’s travel company provided a transformative travel experience; truly once in a lifetime. We were introduced to Zicasso by our friends and thank their agent and travel company for their outstanding compassion, empathy, and patience. They grasped our brief with remarkable clarity and crafted an itinerary that ensured incredibly enriching experiences at each destination, during travel, and in accommodations. They accommodated our need for space between intercity travels and provided invaluable advice and support, from itinerary changes to visa requirements, on-the-ground adjustments, and regular check-ins. I highly recommend our agent and his company for their attentive listening, empathetic approach, and expertise in curating unforgettable itineraries. Thank you, you changed the way we experience Europe and it will always be hard to match the high bar you set with this trip. We are deeply appreciative of our agent and his company’s staff.

This was our second trip with our travel agency, the first being in 2017. My wife had wanted, for a long time, to experience some of the European Christmas markets and this was a good year to do so. Based on our 2017 experience, we wanted to use the same company. When the Zicasso response to our travel request asked if we wanted to use them again, we enthusiastically responded yes! As before, the staff worked closely with us to develop an itinerary that met our desires for multiple Christmas markets and the flexibility of a mostly self-guided visit. The unique insights of the staff proved incredibly helpful in developing a wonderful day-to-day itinerary full of detailed information and resources that were invaluable. Our first-day greeter and guide was amazing and we had almost daily contact with the staff (including some from our 2017 trip) via SMS or voice call, during which they shared ideas and suggestions for the day. They were also immediately available to provide assistance if needed. Luckily, we did not need any, but knowing they were there was very comforting. They also provided a local mobile phone that was very useful for navigation (better than the built-in nav system in the rental car) and pre-programmed with all the numbers (restaurants, hotels, people, etc) associated with the trip. It came in very handy. The lodging and dining arrangements were superb, and based on our specific requests. The company's support enabled us to see nine Christmas markets (eight in Germany and one in France), explore a bit of history, catch up with some friends, and have a delightful trip! We had the same experience as in 2017 and will definitely work with them again if our future travel plans include Germany or any other area they cover. We pass on our heartfelt thanks to the agency for enabling us to cross off a bucket-list item in truly great fashion!

We took the most amazing trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights. I reached out to Zicasso, who put me in touch with our travel partner and their wonderful travel agent. She put together several options for the trip and we were able to choose the ones that best fit our family’s interests. Once everything was decided, she went to work doing everything. All the bookings, connections, transportation, etc. were handled and I didn't have to worry about any of it. Before the trip, she confirmed all of the details and included everything on an amazing travel app that we used while we were on the trip. I can't say enough about what an amazing experience we had on our trip and working with Zicasso and our tour operator. I have used both companies before and have never been disappointed.

Our Zicasso travel partner listened to our preferences and needs, and helped design a fabulous trip for our family. Transportation was flawless throughout the trip and the local guides were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to know them personally and learning about their hometowns. I especially valued the app that provided us with every detail for each day, including emergency contacts, hotel information, and itinerary. Thank you!
