Tourists might also want to stop there on their way to or from the Zhangjiajie/Wulingyuan scenic area that is only four hours away by bus.

Changsha Highlights

These four most popular tourist attractions are all within about 7 miles or 11 kilometers of each other in the center of the city. This makes visiting all these places easy while staying in Changsha.

Huangxing Road (黄兴路) Pedestrian Street

The highlights are the little Chinese shops that give economical prices and a wide selection and the little restaurants and snack stands along it. The lively and friendly atmosphere on the two kilometer street provides an interesting place to shop, and you can save money compared to the more touristy cities.

Sightsee on Orange Island

Orange Island (橘子洲, Júzǐzhōu) : This narrow island and park is in the middle of Changsha in the Xiangjiang River, and it is probably the second most popular attraction for tourists after Mount Yuelu. There are gardens and thousands of fruit trees, frequent grand firework displays in the evening, and a big statue of Mao's head.

Instead of visiting in sweltering summer, or winter when it is cold, April, September, and October are the best months to visit Changsha in terms of weather, scenery, and air quality. April is one of the best months for visiting Changsha because flowers bloom profusely at the two big parks.

Air Quality

Changsha is an industrial city, but paradoxically, the air quality is unusually good for a Chinese city. The river wind is what keeps pollution low in the city. Visitors can enjoy blue skies and clean air at the big parks along the Xiangjiang River. In December and January coal is burned, so if you have asthma or other ailments, it might be best to avoid the city these months.

Huangxing Street has a wide variety of inexpensive, tasty, and authentic snacks . The street is known for its stinky tofu, octopus legs, and peanut snacks. A lot of the local food is spicy and hot.

There are three major shopping areas that most interest tourists. The premier area for foreign tourists is the Wuyi Road, Huangxing Road, and Zhongshan Road axis in the northern part of Changsha. These streets connect, and the area is close to the scenic river.

Transportation

Changsha is an inland transportation hub , so it's very accessible by bullet trains, regular passenger trains, and a major domestic airport.

Passenger and Bullet Trains

Trains : The main train station serving regular trains and some bullet trains is Changsha Railway Station (长沙站) about three miles east of Orange Island. Metro Line 2 connects it with Changsha South Railway Station (长沙南站), serving bullet trains to Shenzhen, Beijing, and the east coast pass .

Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX) is the largest and best-equipped airport in Hunan Province, 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of the city center.

Bus Stations

There are three long distance bus stations: East Station, West Station, and South Station. West Station has buses for Zhangjiajie, and South Station for Guilin.

Archaeological evidence confirms human activity in Lianyungang's ancient Mount Qushan and present-day Mount Jinping area as early as 10,000 years ago. Changsha Travel Guide

Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province as well as its political, economic, and cultural center, is located in the northeastern part of the province. Changsha is also a city of history and culture, as well as being one of China's premier tourist destinations.

Changsha is an old city with a rich past. It lies in the central, roughly east-to-west swath of ancient China defined by the Yellow River and Yangtze Rivers , with their fertile valleys, or basins. It was in this swath of land that the earliest Chinese civilization arose around the year BCE 2100 (human activity, including settlements, that preceded the period termed civilization is generally termed a "culture", as in the Longshan Culture that existed in this region prior to the first broadly recognized Chinese "civilization"). Indeed, the Yellow River Basin is often called "the cradle of Chinese civilization".

The city of Changsha lies about 200 kilometers south of the nearest point on the Yangtze River, with the nearest comparable point on the Yellow River lying some 350 kilometers further to the north. It was first toward the end of the Spring and Autumn (BCE 770-476) period of the Eastern Zhou (BCE 770-221) that Changsha was put on the map, as it were, when the Kingdom of Chu (originally "Jing", then "Jingchu", and finally simply "Chu"), which was based in the city of Ying (the city no longer exists, but was situated roughly where the city of Jingzhou in present-day Hebei Province is located), spread its sphere of influence to comprise Changsha.

Changsha History

As turbulent the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States (BCE 475-221) periods (i.e., the Eastern Zhou era) were, they led to considerable advances in Chinese – and thus in the world – civilization. It was a time of much experimentation, not only in religious and philosophical thought (Taoism would emerge from the strange brew of existential ideas that were astir at the time, including animism, dualism (the Yin and the Yang), and ancestor worship), but also in science and medicine. The discovery in 1972 of the amazingly well-preserved Mawangdui Tomb corpse at Changsha, dating back to BCE 168, with moist, elastic skin, flexible joints, and internal organs that had completely resisted decomposition shocked the world, opening the world's eyes to the high degree of medical advancement that had existed at such an early stage in mankind's civilization.

It should therefore come as no surprise that Changsha should become a center of learning the culture as well as an important military outpost. It was a city and an area that was fought over incessantly during China's Imperial history, sometimes with brutal consequences (the city's entire population was once massacred). Changsha would survive all this and would eventually produce one of the four original "academies" of China, Yuela Academy (present-day Hunan University). Changsha attracted many scholars and thinkers as well as famous generals. For example, during the Southern Song (CE 1127-1279) Dynasty , when the then famous rationalist (Confucian) philosopher, Zhang Shi, was the head of Yuelu Academy, he invited the equally famous ideologist of the Lixue ("Learning of Principle") school of thought, Zhu Xi, to give a series of lectures at the academy, and from these lectures arouse the influential "Huxiang" school of thought, which embraced 'Patriotism combined with Practicalism'. Indeed, at the time, Yuelu Academy was considered the premier academy for bright, progressive thinkers.

In more recent times, Changsha was the hometown – adopted in some instances – of a number of revolutionary figures, from revolutionaries who fought against China's last Imperial dynasty, the Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasty , to Mao Zedong, whose communist revolution altered radically the political landscape of China.

But the city of Changsha is more than just a repository of ancient culture and a center for intellectual and political pursuits, it is also a very beautiful city of "hills, water and islands". Here one is neighbor to Mount Yuelu, part of the mystical mountain range to which Mount Hengshan – one of the five holy mountains of Taoism – belongs. One is also neighbor to the broad Xiang River, in the middle of which is located Juzi Island , and from which one has the best possible view of Mount Yuelu. Visitors to Changsha quickly come to appreciate why some of the earliest Chinese forbears chose this very spot to make their encampment.

* The Eastern Zhou era is often referred to as a dynasty, as are all periods in China's ancient past, all the way back to the first recorded dynasty, the Xia (BCE 2000-1500) Dynasty. This is an incorrect characterization, however, since the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods (i.e., the Eastern Zhou era) represented a period of turbulence, where there was no central, or unifying, power, but rather, separate kingdoms, or states, that each vied for power. The Xia and Shang (BCE 1700-1027) Dynasties were characterized by slavery, and indeed, slavery continued in some parts of China for a very long time after it ended in the most developed parts of "Han" China. But in the Han parts of China, a social awareness had developed, due surely to freedom of expression and to the institution of a codified, or state-regulated, civil service, and it was surely these initiatives that eventually made it impossible to conscience slavery (Confucius was one of the most vociferous opponents of slavery). In this, the Han Chinese were far ahead of the rest of the world.

3. The Alma Mater Of A Revolutionary Great

Wherever you go in Changsha, it's hard to shake off the influence of Mao. The great man was schooled here, and started his revolutionary activities in the area, so it holds a special place in the hearts of Chinese patriots. This humble school could be the most sacred site of all. Mao studied and taught her in the 1910s and 20s, began his activism and political awakening, and set China on the road to revolution in the 1940s. So it's quite a big deal in historical terms.

A superb collection of historical artifacts, the newly renovated Hunan Provincial Museum should be a must-visit during your stay in Changsha. Covering 50,000 square meters, it's home to bronzes, silk paintings, ancient books, stunning lacquer boxes, ceramic masterpieces, charming textiles, and examples of Chinese calligraphy that will make your script look like a child's scrawl. But the centerpieces are the well-preserved body of Xin Zhui, who was extracted from the 2,000 year-old Mawangdui Han Tombs. It's an eerie sight, but essential viewing for history buffs.

Situated on the eastern bank of the Xingjiang River, the Changsha Museum is a more modest affair. Well, in theory. And the collections of jade, ceramics, textiles and paintings inside are engaging in their own right. However, be prepared for a little bit more Mao worship along the way. It's as much a homage to the revolutionary leader as a standard municipal museum.

Changsha is at its best around spring and fall. From February through May, the city starts to warm up and the magnolia trees bloom, while September to November is another mild, pleasant time to visit.

How to Get to Changsha

Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX) is well connected to regional airports. From there, you can catch the fast Maglev train to the center of town for ¥20 or take a taxi for around ¥80. Airport buses cost ¥16.50.

It takes around 14 hours to reach Changsha from Beijing by train, and about five hours from Shanghai.

Take the G60 from Shanghai, the G4 from Hong Kong, or the G45 followed by the G4 if you are coming from Beijing.

Buses run into Changsha from all over China. The four urban bus stations are around 25 minutes by taxi from the city center (a ride into town will cost around ¥40).

April is a great time to visit Changsha when the flowers at the city’s two big parks are in bloom. September and October are nice months for a visit too, as you’ll avoid the suffocating heat of the summer, but still escape the cold of the winter too.

Changsha might not offer as plenty of attractive sites as some of the larger cities in China do, but there are still plenty of history, culture and fun to be had if you know where to look.

Two major temples draw visitors to Changsha time and time again. The first is the Kaifu temple, located to the north of the city and a key Buddhist monastery of the country. Covering almost five square kilometres, this temple has a history stretching back more than 1,000 years, and a gorgeous outlook over the lake and bridge for photos. The entrance ticket is 10¥ and you will also get free joss sticks at the entrance.

The other is the Tianxin Pavilion, which sits atop the ancient ramparts of Changsha. Built in the Qing dynasty, it is a beautiful pavilion to behold and contains many precious artefacts to be discovered. The architecture is mesmerising and the interior of the temple is well-decorated. A few abundant or very ancient styles of interior decoration can be witnesses inside the temple.

The highlight of their visit for many tourists to Changsha is the Hunan Provincial Museum. It hosts many interesting collections including the Mawangdui Han Tomb, bronze ware crafts and relics of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. If you’re interested in Chinese history, don’t miss the Mawangdui Han Tombs, where more than 3,000 precious relics were unearthed in the 1970s.

If you fancy some exercise and beautiful scenery, Mount Yuelu Park is a gorgeously opulent space to spend some time. Allow a couple of hours to climb the hill and enjoy nature as well as a panoramic view of Changsha’s skyline. It’s dotted with temples and other historic sites, as well as park busses and a cable car if you can’t manage the climb under your own steam.  Visit the acclaimed Yuelu Academy for an insight into cutting edge, modern education in China.

Getting here and getting around

Most visitors to Changsha will arrive by air to Huanghua International Airport, where an onward connection is a 45-minute drive via the expressway. Busses cost just ¥16.5 and take arrivals into downtown Changsha directly. Alternatively, the maglev costs just ¥20 and arrive at the South Railway Station, connecting to metro line-2.

If you’re already in China, travelling from other cities is most commonly done via train. The trip from Beijing will take around 14 hours via normal train and just 5- hours on a high-speed train. From Shanghai, it’s 4.5 hours, and from Shenzhen just 3 hours. If you prefer to travel by bus, there are numerous long-distance bus connections from many major Chinese cities.

Getting around can be simple by taxi. They start their meters at ¥8, but each is different in terms of the ongoing cost. There are busses, which tend to be overcrowded and hot, but can take you to many of the major sites for as little as ¥1. However, the best way to get about in all weathers is by the two metro lines which run north to south (line 1) and east to west (line 2). They are set to be extended over the coming years.

Eating and drinking

Changsha offers less touristy eating and a more authentically Chinese experience for the intrepid traveller. A must-see is the Huangxing Road walking street, where you’ll find inexpensive restaurants and street food to satisfy every palate. The cuisine here is known as Xiang cuisine and is renowned as one of the traditional food types of China. Expect hot and spicy flavours wrapped in beautiful, delicate looking dishes, embellished with vegetables sculpted into a variety of intricate shapes and patterns.

If you’re looking for some signature dishes, go for the San Ceng Tao Ji (steamed nesting birds), which involves a sparrow stuffed into a pigeon stuffed into a hen, as well as a delightful herby soup. Look out for Mala Ziji (spicy chicken cubes), which is a true Hunan dish comprising peppers, vinegar and local wine along with plenty of chillies for a heated kick. Tofu dishes abound in this city too, but don’t be afraid to try Fried Stinky Tofu, a true Changsha dish with salty, savoury notes which doesn’t smell as bad as the name might make you think! In fact, it is something super delicious -your taste buds will never forget the flavour.

For liquid refreshment and nightlife, head out to Jiefang West Road where there are a few Chinese clubs to dance and drink the night away. Taiping Street caters to those who prefer the music slightly quieter and the clientele less inebriated.

Getting a good night's sleep

There are plenty of hotels of all classes within Changsha. If you’re a luxury traveller, the Kempinski Hotel and the Crowne Plaza offer western comforts as well as luxuries like indoor pools. Changsha's rise as a favorite for Hong Kong explorers

Suppose one spots someone in Changsha, Hunan province, speaking Mandarin with a Cantonese accent and a touch of English and paying in cash. In that case, they are likely from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

More Hong Kong residents have flocked to Changsha to travel as they have been captivated by its delicious and cheap food and the convenience of the high-speed train, which has reduced travel time to 3 hours and 10 minutes.

They are also lured by the city's wide range of recreational activities with budget-friendly options.

Hong Kong residents have flooded the social media platform Xiaohongshu with travel guide posts about Changsha.

The restart of the high-speed trains that connect Hong Kong to Beijing, Changsha, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan and other cities on April 1, 2023, allows Hong Kong residents to travel to mainland cities more conveniently.

Hong Kong tourists come for the renowned Hunan cuisine snacks, such as stinky tofu, known for its spicy and robust flavors, and the local milk tea brand Chayan Yuese.

The city also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with bars, street food and live houses that are attractive to Hong Kong travelers.

Apart from Hong Kong travelers, Changsha has been a popular travel destination for people across the country.

According to local government figures, during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Festival from April 4 to 6, the city received more than 4.12 million tourists, with tourism revenue reaching 1.94 billion yuan ($268 million). The famous Wuyi business center received more than 1 million travelers on April 5.

Chow Ki-Yan, 26, has traveled to Changsha three times. She has visited all the famous tourist attractions, such as the Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle, and eaten all kinds of local food, such as little crawfish and stinky tofu.

"I love Changsha very much as it is a very vibrant city with all kinds of nightlife, perfect for young people," she said. "You can still find things to do and food to eat at 3 am and you can also slow down and just enjoy the beautiful views of the city."

She said she spotted numerous Hong Kong residents while queuing up for the stinky tofu.

Ou Hao-lin, 38, also traveled to Changsha for a business trip in March and found the city young and lively.

He was impressed by the stylish decorations of the city's shopping centers, which are perfect for social media posts.

He was also impressed by the city's spicy food, which was readily available on the high-speed train.
