Cruise Travel Insurance

It's plain sailing with our cruise insurance upgrade.

Make sure you're covered on board your sea cruise with our Cruise Insurance upgrade.

5 Star Travel Insurance from Admiral

5 star rated platinum level travel insurance.

Our Platinum level cover has Defaqto's 5 Star rating.

Relax and enjoy complete protection

A cruise is a great choice for those who want to sit back and watch the world go by; total relaxation, no hassle and everything in one place.

While there's no arguing a holiday on the open water is a great experience, it can pose a slightly trickier problem if something goes wrong.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

Calm seas with Cruise Insurance

By adding our Cruise Travel Insurance upgrade, your travel insurance will be validated while you're on board the cruise ship. You won't be covered for any part of your holiday without the add-on.

What does Cruise Travel Insurance cover?

By adding cruise cover, your Admiral Travel Insurance will cover you for all the holiday essentials such as lost luggage and medical expenses as well as:

Missed port departure

If you miss the departure of your cruise and have to pay for accommodation or travel expenses to get to the next dock, Admiral will cover you up to the limit shown on your policy if the departure was missed due to:

  • Delays or failures to scheduled public transport (excluding taxis)
  • An accident or breakdown of the vehicle you're travelling in
  • An accident or breakdown ahead on the motorway or dual carriageway you're travelling on, causing a delay
  • Strike, industrial action or adverse weather

Cruise cabin confinement

For every 24 hours you're confined to your cabin by the ship's medical officer, for medical reasons (including declared pre-existing conditions) we will pay up to the limit shown on your policy. You must provide written confirmation by the on-board medical officer.

Unused excursions

Don't worry if you miss a pre-booked excursion due to cabin confinement through illness or an accident. We'll pay up to the policy limit for any sickness or accidents covered under the emergency medical and repatriation section of your travel insurance.

Cruise interruption

If you fall ill during your cruise and miss part of it due to needing medical treatment on dry land, we'll pay any travel expenses you have to pay to rejoin the ship (up to the policy limit specified). You'll need to get a medical certificate to confirm.

With all of the above examples exclusions apply – please see your policy guide for more information.

What happens if my cruise holiday is cancelled?

If your cruise is cancelled for any of the reasons below, you'll receive up to £5,000, depending on the level of cover you choose, to cover the costs of your trip:

  • Death, illness, injury or complications of pregnancy or childbirth of you, your travel companion, close relative, close business associate or anyone you planned to stay with
  • Court cases and quarantine if you or your travelling partner, or anyone you planned to stay with, is quarantined, called for jury service or as a witness and the court refuses to reschedule
  • Redundancy cover for you and your travelling partner if either is made redundant from the company you've been employed at continuously for at least 24 months
  • Armed forces and emergency services if you or your travelling partner is a member of the British Armed Forces or the emergency services and has authorised leave cancelled due to an unexpected emergency
  • Home damage you or your companion can't travel if your home is burgled or seriously damaged by a fire, storm or flood within seven days of your departure
  • Passport or visa your passport or visa is stolen in a burglary at your home in the seven days before your departure and you're unable to get a replacement in time

One mistake to never make with travel insurance - top tips for buying cruise cover now

Author: Harriet Mallinson

Published on: 07 December 2021

Updated on: 20 December 2021

Cruise travel insurance is vital when embarking on your holidays but many might be worried about what the latest Omicron Covid variant means for holiday cover. We spoke to the experts.

Cruise insurance has never been more important than during the Covid pandemic as travel plans continually change amid ongoing unpredictability.

How do you know what travel cover to get for your cruise holidays? What is the best travel insurance for cruises? What mistakes should you avoid?

World of Cruising spoke to insurance expert Neil Wright, travel pro and managing director of Cedar Tree travel insurance for his advice on buying cruise insurance.

This is what you need to know.

Will Cruise Lines Add Covid-19 Cover To Travel Insurance?

Safety net: how one woman got a £50,000 bill because she didn’t have travel insurance, take cover, the dos and don’ts when choosing a travel insurance, why travel insurance is essential, what is the best travel insurance for cruises.

It's vital to buy policies that automatically cover a cruise holiday, with set additional benefits, as part of standard cover. Look out for policies underwritten by AXA, Wright recommends.

"Having travel insurance, in general, is necessary," the expert said. "Most cruise companies will not let you board unless you are covered, nor should you travel anywhere without it, as the costs of a medical emergency can be horrific, even for the wealthy."

Does travel insurance cover Covid - and the Omicron variant?

Incredibly, travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth.com, reported a 53 percent increase in travel insurance sales following the news of the Omicron variant. So what should you do to make sure you're covered during this tricky time?

Policies that cover previous variants will likely cover Omicron.

"The existing Covid cover currently in place for all our three insurers (CoverForYou, Cedar Tree and Outbacker) also covers the Omicron variant (the same as it did with the Delta variant)," said Wright.

"As far as we’re concerned, it’s just another variant. Covid cover is included as standard – at no extra cost – on all new and existing Single-Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies.

"However, travellers should check policies with other insurers to understand exactly what they’re covered for, and to what extent."

What mistakes should you avoid when buying insurance?

Wright warns against trying to cheat the system when it comes to illness.

"It is really important that ALL pre-existing medical conditions are declared at the time of purchase as an omission could mean that the whole policy is invalid as the underwriter is not fully able to assess the risk," he cautioned.

How to choose travel insurance

When buying insurance for your cruise do check you're getting enough Covid cover - reading the fine print is vital.

Wright explained: "In the current climate, Covid cover continues to be one of the top priorities. Most insurers are now offering Covid cover.

"But, be warned, despite insurers saying they have this type of cover, it’s the bare minimum, or you have to pay extra, so it’s easy to get caught out. Make sure you check what the insurers’ policy is for vaccinated versus unvaccinated travellers."

Important types of Covid cover to look out for

  • You are not allowed to board a cruise due to detected Covid symptoms
  • You fall ill with Covid-19 or another pandemic illness and cannot travel
  • You, or a member of your household, have to self-isolate at home and cannot travel
  • During travel, travel restrictions for a pandemic illness are imposed which were not in force ahead of travel, requiring you to return home
  • You are due to travel, but the country you are travelling to introduces a quarantine period on arrival and you no longer wish to travel and want to cancel your holiday

Does travel insurance cover cancellation?

The good news is you will get your money back, in some form.

"Your cruise company is legally required to reimburse you for the money you have paid," Wright confirmed, "In some instances, they will offer either a voucher for future use or a different holiday.

"It is entirely up to you whether or not you accept these alternatives, you are fully entitled to decline and insist on a cash refund."

How much is travel insurance UK?

"The cost will vary depending on the cover required," Wright detailed. "Expect to pay around £8 for a Single-Trip policy for a long weekend."

Is travel insurance more expensive if you're older?

Travellers over 70 do face high premiums as they are more likely to incur a medical claim hence premiums reflect the increased risk that underwriters face.

- READ MORE: Travel insurance costs can double after 70 years old -

Can you be reimbursed for travel insurance if your holiday is cancelled?

No, you cannot get your money spent on insurance back if your trip does not go ahead.

Wright elaborated: "You will have been ‘On Risk’ for cancellation arising from a series of risks, as set out in your policy, including being hospitalised or being medically unfit to travel, from the moment you purchase insurance until you actually start your journey, this can be a number of months.

"As a result, your policy has been used and insurers will not usually refund the premium. In all circumstances, you will be able to get a full refund if you cancel your insurance within 14 days of purchase. Some insurers are willing to change the dates of your policy at no cost if you have accepted a different holiday.

"With insurers that already cover cruises as part of their standard policies, or depending on the level of cruise ‘add on’ you have purchased with policies where cruises don’t come under standard cover, you’ll automatically be covered for cancellation, along with medical needs and evacuation."

What is cruise travel insurance?

Whether you’re cruising around the world or setting sail across the Med, cruise holidays are great for soaking up plenty of sun, sights and culture. But it’s important to have the right travel insurance in place, just in case something happens while you’re at sea.

Most travel insurance plans don’t cover the types of activities and risks associated with cruises. These can include itinerary issues, such as missing a scheduled port stop or missing out on a planned excursion due to injury or illness.

Why choose Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Insurance?

With our travel insurance and cruise cover you’ll get:

  • Up to 20% off if you’re a Nectar member. Exclusions apply*

Cruise Travel Insurance

Our Cruise Travel insurance covers you for:

  • Missed port departure
  • Cabin confinement
  • Cruise interruption

Defacto Rated

Cruise Travel Insurance provides essential cover for your cruise. This includes onboard medical emergencies, cruise interruptions and cancellations, cabin confinement and lost luggage.

We can help you find a cruise Travel Insurance policy tailored to your exact needs and preferences, even if you are living with medical conditions. We also have no upper age limits on our cruise policies.

What is Cruise Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?

Cruise Travel Insurance is specially designed to cover all aspects of your cruise, giving you peace of mind and comprehensive protection.

  • It’s tailored for cruises: Unlike standard Travel Insurance, Cruise Travel Insurance includes essential cover specific to cruises, including cabin confinement, onboard illnesses, and medical emergencies
  • Medical conditions: Cruise Travel Insurance is essential if you’re living with a pre-existing medical condition, as it covers specific cruise-related incidents that aren’t included with standard cover. For example, if you need an emergency air ambulance back to the UK from Spain and don’t have cruise cover, you could face costs of tens of thousands of pounds
  • Cover is a requirement for many cruise companies: most cruise operators need you to have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy in place before you set sail, making this a vital consideration ahead of your cruise

Having the right kind of policy ahead of your trip is a great way to make sure your cruise is smooth sailing.

Yes. As long as you have not yet left for your cruise you can buy Cruise Cover after booking your holiday.

Will you be covered if you have a medical emergency on your cruise?

Yes, as long as you’ve declared your pre-existing medical conditions beforehand, and it fits within the terms and conditions of your policy.

What if your port visit gets cancelled due to bad weather?

AllClear Cruise Travel Insurance offers compensation if scheduled port visits are cancelled due to adverse weather or timetable restrictions. Please refer to your specific policy wording for details.

If you have a GHIC, do you still need specialist Cruise Travel Insurance?

Yes, you will still need Cruise Travel Insurance.

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) will ensure you are entitled to the same level of treatment as a citizen of that country. However, a GHIC is not a replacement for Cruise Travel Insurance, as it does not cover you for:

  • The costs of rescue and repatriation (an air ambulance from Spain back to the UK costs £10,000 or more)
  • Lost or stolen property such as passports, baggage or precious items
  • Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption
  • Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness
  • Any medical treatment needed outside of the EU

Do Cruise Travel Insurance policies cover land holidays?

Yes, holiday insurance for cruises covers both land and cruising holidays.

If you’re not going on a cruise but are looking for increased cancellation cover, you could choose AllClear Gold Plus or AllClear Platinum, where you can increase cancellation cover up to £25K per person.

Does Cruise Insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, Cruise Insurance can cover pre-existing medical conditions, but you need to make sure to disclose them when purchasing the policy to ensure proper cover.

Is it possible to get Cruise Travel Insurance for the rest of my group?

If you’re planning to enjoy a cruise with your loved ones, you can protect everyone under one policy with either a Family Cruise Cover or a Group Travel Insurance .

Do you need to declare all of the places you’ll visit on a cruise?

Yes. Due to the different costs for medical treatment across the world, you need to declare the destinations of your cruise holiday.

Why is Cruise Insurance more expensive?

Medical treatment on a cruise is very expensive compared to most land-based trips. As the cost of potential claims is so high, Cruise Cover can be more expensive than Standard Travel Insurance.

Common questions

What is cruise travel insurance.

Cruise cover is a mandatory add-on for travel Insurance that protects against travel risks unique to going on a cruise. These can include becoming unwell at sea or added complications if luggage is lost or stolen. With cruise cover, you pay an extra premium for extra protection in case of such events.

Why add the cruise cover option?

If you’re a going on a cruise you must add our cruise cover upgrade.

Remind yourself how much a cruise holiday costs. It's typically more expensive than a standard trip. A voyage tends to last longer than most holidays too. Cruises carry their own risks and Cruise Cover is there in case the unexpected should happen.

We don’t like to think about what could go wrong, but cruises can have their own, unexpected upsets. Certain things that could happen at sea may not be covered by a standard policy alone and the extra protection is designed specifically to help with cruise-related mishaps.

For instance, getting ill at sea might mean you're treated on board first, then need emergency evacuation back to shore. Cruise insurance is there to help in such circumstances.

Why choose Post Office for my cruise insurance?

We’re an award-winning travel insurance provider. Our cover includes:

  • Evening dress hire

And if you need to contact us about travel insurance  our call centres are right here in the UK.

When should I buy cruise travel insurance?

Cruises are often booked several months before the dates when their ships set sail. Buying your policy well in advance can help safeguard against unexpected events or issues that might delay the trip or cause it to be cancelled altogether.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Overview of Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

What does travel insurance cover?

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

What does credit card travel insurance cover?

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex , for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

What travel insurance coverage do you need to pay more for?

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Choosing the right travel insurance

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.
