An Update from Egypt & Jordan

We've added some new photos and videos from a recent trip to Egypt and Jordan with our guests in December. You can view them here along with a message for guests considering traveling to this region from Robin Tauck, co-owner and former President and CEO of Tauck Inc.

4x4 adventure in Wadi Rum

Desert offroad adventure in jordan's wadi rum.

Jordan's Wadi Rum – popularly known as the "Valley of the Moon" – is home to some of the most stunning desert landscapes on Earth. Exploring its beautiful, lunar-like dunes and towering sandstone cliffs by four-wheel-drive vehicle is an absolutely unforgettable experience – and we invite you to do just that… and perhaps even ride a camel… on this thrilling off-road adventure!

The Valley of the Kings

Discovering egypt's valley of the kings.

Nestled in Egypt's Theban hills west of the Nile River, near today's Luxor, stands the Valley of the Kings – where, between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, complexes of tombs were cut out of the rock to house the remains of the Pharaohs and other nobles of Egypt's New Kingdom, and prepare them for the afterlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains more than 60 identified tombs and chambers. While many were once filled with treasures, most have been plundered through the ages… with the exception of that of the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered intact in the 1920s, whose artifacts and remains have been removed and preserved. Visiting any of these tombs today is an experience not to be missed.

Abu Simbel – The Temples that Moved

Discover the remarkable temples of abu simbel, one of the most recognizable sites of ancient egypt..

Originally located on the banks of the Nile River for 3,000 years, in an incredible feat of engineering, Abu Simbel was dismantled and rebuilt in the 1960's and relocated on a higher hill to make way for the Aswan High Dam. The complex contains two temples; a large one containing four colossal statues of Ramesses II and a second, smaller temple thought to be dedicated to Queen Nefertari. The entrance way of the larger temple was designed in such a way that on two days of the year, October and February 22, the sun illuminates the inner sanctuary including three statues seated on a bench, one of which is the pharaoh himself.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

All guests are required to provide their passport information to us at time of booking.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Jordan and Egypt. You will need a visa for Jordan and Egypt (both included in tour cost).

In addition to a valid passport, U.S., U.K. and Australian citizens are also required to have a visa to enter Jordan and Egypt. The Jordanian visa will be issued upon arrival to the airport at no cost. Please note that Tauck will cover the expense of your visa for entry to Egypt, and it will be issued on tour. Please Note: Effective October 1, 2023 Canadian citizens will need to apply for a paper VISA from the nearest Egyptian Embassy or Consulate for entry into Egypt; e-visas will no longer be issued to Canadian citizens.

If you are citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Egypt and of Jordan to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by CareFree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $769 per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Besides the checked luggage limitations noted above, you are allowed to bring one piece of carry-on luggage aboard your intra-tour flights, not to exceed a weight of 11 lbs (5 kg),with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 43" (110 cm) due to space restrictions in overhead storage bins aboard the charter flights, motor coaches; larger carry-ons will be stowed in the luggage compartment under the coach.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Throughout the tour, we will provide you with clean and safe drinking water.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Jordan and Egypt: Petra to Pyramids is an active tour. You should be in good health, able to climb into and out of a small boat and walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Many of our walking excursions are in and around ancient sites and old city quarters. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Jordan is approximately 90% desert, with an annual rainfall below 8 in (203 mm) and falling as low as 1-2 in (25-50 mm) in some places. Jordan is a very sunny country with average daily sunshine hours ranging from six to seven hours per day in winter and as many as twelve to thirteen hours per day in the summer. Although summer temperatures are high in the desert, the heat is usually moderated by low humidity and a stiff daytime breeze while the nights are cool and pleasant. You should expect hot and dry summers with cool evenings.

Egypt essentially has a hot desert climate. The climate is generally extremely dry all over the country except on the northern Mediterranean coast which receives rainfall in winter. In addition to rarity of rain, extreme heat during summer months is also a general climate feature of Egypt although daytime temperatures are more moderated along the northern coast. The prevailing northwesterly wind from the Mediterranean Sea continuously blows over the northern coast without the interposition of an eventual mountain range and thus, greatly moderates temperatures throughout the year. Because of the effect, average low temperatures vary from 9.5 °C (49.1 °F) in wintertime to 23 °C (73.4 °F) in summertime and average high temperatures vary from 17 °C (62.6 °F) in wintertime to 32 °C (89.6 °F) in summertime. Though temperatures are moderated along the coasts, the situation changes in the interior, which are away from the moderating northerly winds. Thus, in the central and the southern parts, daytime temperatures are hotter, especially in summers where average high temperatures can exceed 40 °C (104 °F) like in Aswan , Luxor , Asyut or Sohag which are located in the deserts of Egypt.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Your journey through Israel and Jordan is casual. Comfortable, cotton clothing is suggested. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Please be aware that some of the sights we visit, require both men and women to have their knees and shoulders covered, and in some cases wear long pants. Once on tour, your tour director will advise you on appropriate attire.

For travel December through February, you will need a hat, gloves and warm clothes for our travels in Petra in Jordan. Also at this time, the temperatures in Egypt are still hot, so be sure to pack lightweight clothes for touring in the desert. For travel from March through May and August through December, you will need a jacket or fleece, a light sweater for the air conditioning on the planes and coaches. You might consider a small umbrella, not for rain, but for the sun. At the Sofitel Hotel in the 1902 restaurant, gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and ladies should wear cocktail attire. The hotel does loan jackets to guests.  Sandals are acceptable for ladies to wear, however not for men.

Most importantly, bring comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in. It is important that your shoes have good ankle support, as we visit some ancient sites where paths and stairs may be uneven and unpaved.  Open-toed shoes and flip flops are not recommended for visits to Petra and most of the Egyptian sites due to the sand and the rocky walking conditions.

Jordan and Egypt are primarily Muslim countries, although the freedom of all religions is protected. Muslim women's clothing often covers their arms, legs and hair. Western women are not subject to these customs, but very revealing clothing is never appropriate and conservative dress is advisable for both men and women in the old part of Amman (downtown), and outside the cities. Shorts are rarely worn by either gender, and would be out of place in the downtown Amman area. Topless sunbathing is prohibited and one-piece swimsuits are preferred, although two-piece swimsuits are acceptable at hotel pools.

Valet laundry services are available at all the hotels.

Beyond your normal wardrobe and personal grooming items, we suggest you also bring along:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months. Extra tee shirts are always a good idea). Please make sure you have your shoulders covered for monuments. Jacket for men  and cocktail dress and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • Long shorts and pants (many of the sights require both men and women to have-shorts that cover their knees and in some cases require you to wear long pants)
  • Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, chargers and extra memory cards
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Small flashlight
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Copies of your prescriptions from your doctor. While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed. What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

In one of the world's greatest cooperative preservation efforts, these temples were dismantled and moved in 1968 to save them from the flooding of the Aswan Dam. The Temple of Ramses II was constructed so that the sun's rays would illuminate four statues of Egyptian deities within the sanctuary on his birthday and on the anniversary of his coronation, October 20 and February 20. The temple is fronted by four colossal figures of Ramses II seated with the gods and attended by his Queen and daughters. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari, who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility.

Dive into Egyptian culture before your tour even begins. Get your first taste with lunch at a local restaurant, featuring traditional Egyptian cuisine. After, move on to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This contemporary 5,300,000 square foot space sits in the historic neighborhood of Fustat. The museum first opened in 2017 and is home to a collection of 50,000 artifacts, tracing the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to today. On April 3, 2021 the world watched in awe as the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities relocated here the Royal Mummies during the stunning Pharaohs’ Golden Parade. The 22 mummies (18 kings and 4 queens) of Egypt’s most important pharaohs and queens were displayed on the streets of Cairo as they were transported from the Museum in Tahrir Square to their new home in the Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This large collection of royal mummies includes the likes of King Ramses II, the most famous pharaoh of the New Kingdom, and Queen Hatshepsut, who came to rule at a time when women did not become pharaohs. With the expert guidance of a local Egyptologist, enjoy a visit of this impressive museum – a perfect introduction to your exploration of Egypt. This optional tour is operated by a local representative and requires guests to have a pre-night hotel stay in Cairo. The optional is available from January 1, 2024 onwards.

Jordan & Egypt Uncovered

22 days | dive into ancient culture, hidden wonders and diverse landscapes in jordan and egypt.

Travellers amongst the ruins of Aswan in Egypt

Take an epic adventure through Jordan and Egypt and see not one but two of the Seven Wonders of the World – now this is a trip for the bucket list! Wander the ancient city of Petra, relax along the Gulf of Aqaba coastline and be greeted by the legendary hospitality of local Bedouin people at a Wadi Rum desert camp. Discover the underwater worlds beneath the azure waters of the Red Sea, explore bustling Cairo and cruise along the Nile in a traditional felucca. Wander through Luxor, Alexandria and coastal Hurghada. Gaze at the grandeur of the pyramids, step back in time at magnificent tombs and chill out on deck while you watch rural Egyptian life pass you by along the Nile. If you want a trip packed with unforgettable experience, this one’s for you.

Trip overview

  • Explore not one, but two of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World – spend a whole day traversing Petra’s Treasury in Jordan and then heads to fascinating Cairo to witness the Great Pyramids of Giza.
  • Join Bedouin locals at a desert camp in Wadi Rum for a night of traditional hospitality, good food and epic starry skies. You’ll learn about the Bedouin way of life and fall asleep in the eerie silence of the desert.
  • Bask in the unique atmosphere of Aswan and experience not only the warmth and charm of Nubian hospitality but also some delicious traditional cuisine at a local homestay.
  • Set sail on one of the world’s most iconic rivers with an included felucca trip down the Nile. Relax and soak up the landscapes as scenes of everyday Egyptian life pass you by.
  • Swim in the balmy Red Sea on a snorkelling adventure in Hurghada – sharing a tasty lunch aboard the yacht and looking out for clownfish, turtles and manta rays among the kaleidoscopic coral.
  • The desert camp in Wadi Rum and the Nile felucca cruise both feature basic accommodation in incredibly memorable settings. Accommodation aboard the overnight train is in two-berth cabins which convert to bunk beds. Please see the itinerary for more details on accommodation styles and facilities.
  • The walkways around ruins can be uneven, dusty and rocky, so be sure to bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. At major sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, you can expect to be exposed to the elements at length, so be prepared with a hat, sunscreen and plenty of fluids.
  • Some hotels in Egypt may not have lifts, so on occasion you may need to climb stairs with your luggage to reach your room.
  • The temperatures in Egypt and Jordan can reach all extremes. Please familiarise yourself with the weather norms in the season you wish to travel.
  • The Aqaba–Nuweiba ferry travels across the Gulf of Aqaba. It can be rough, and is a long travel day, but is the easiest way to travel between the two destinations. Your leader in Jordan will assist you until you reach the Aqaba port and you will be greeted by your new leader once you've crossed the border in Egypt. If you do experience sea sickness, please take appropriate precautions for the journey. This journey can often be held up due to scheduling or weather conditions. Please see the Day 5 ‘Special Information’ section of the trip itinerary for more details.

Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome to Jordan – cosmopolitan, contemporary and teeming with biblical history. Your trip begins with an important welcome meeting at 6 pm today, where you’ll meet your local leader and travel crew. If you do happen to arrive early, be sure to take in the sweeping views of Amman from the citadel, explore the Jordan Museum that’s home to the Dead Sea Scrolls, or take a trip out to the ruins of Jerash – an ancient walled town that remarkably recalls life 2000 years ago. After meeting up for your briefing, head out on the town, perhaps feasting on ara’yes – Jordan’s answer to a toasted sandwich, packed full of spiced meat.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Amman - Citadel (entrance fee) - JOD3
  • Amman - Roman Theatre (entrance fee) - JOD2
  • Madaba - Al-Maghtas Bethany Baptism site (entrance fee) - JOD12
  • Jerash - Roman ruins - Entry Fee - JOD10
  • Amman - Jordan Archaeological Museum (entrance fee) - JOD3

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. If you’d like to spend more time in Amman, we'll be happy to book additional accommodation (subject to availability).

We have listed the total price including transportation and local guides (where applicable) for these optional activities wherever possible. This is to help you budget for any additional excursions you might like to do on your trip. Some activities require minimum numbers to operate. If you prefer to do your own thing, taxis are available and your leader can assist in organising.

This morning, travel by minibus to Mt Nebo. Mt Nebo is the place where the prophet Moses is supposedly buried and is said to have seen the 'Promised Land'. Explore this sanctuary, checking out the remarkable mosaics inside its fourth-century church. On a clear day, the views over the Dead Sea to Israel and the Palestinian Territories are spectacular. Afterwards, take a 30-minute drive to the super salty Dead Sea. Technically sitting below sea level, it’s perfect for swimming and floating in, and the mud on the sea floor is said to have healing properties – so lather up! Continue on to the crusader castle of Kerak, sitting in a commanding position on top of a cliff overlooking Kerak town and the valley below. Spend time exploring the seven-level fortress and learn the legends of 12th-century battles between Crusaders and Muslim armies. Continue on to Petra for the night.

  • Mt Nebo - Mt Nebo Visit - JOD2
  • Dead Sea - Dead Sea visit - JOD12
  • Kerak - Kerak Castle (entrance fee) - JOD2
  • Petra - Petra By Night - JOD17

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Your tour today includes stops at the Dead Sea, Mount Nebo and Kerak Castle, but keep in mind that entry fees are not included. When swimming at the Dead Sea, towels are available for hire.

Many travellers like to experience Petra by night, however, this is only available on certain days of the week. Feel free to ask your group leader for more information, and if this optional activity is available to you on your dates.

The jewel of Jordan, the lost city of the biblical Nabateans, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World – Petra is a magical hand-carved wonder. Today, you’ll have the chance to discover this sixth century BC masterpiece with your small group. Be dwarfed by the towering rock formations as you squeeze through a narrow path called the Siq until you reach the grand entrance of the iconic Treasury. Gaze up at the intricate carvings and details, and spend the afternoon exploring the site at your own pace. There’s the old Roman road, other temples and old tombs, as well as the rock-hewn amphitheatre to explore. For those feeling more adventurous, take a challenging hike up a set of stairs to the smaller but no less impressive monastery, taking approximately one hour. After arriving back at your accommodation, why not find a traditional bathhouse to rejuvenate after a day of incredible sightseeing.

  • Petra - Guided tour (One day pass included)
  • Petra - Additional Petra day pass - JOD5

One day's entrance fee to Petra is included in your trip. Please note that when entering Petra as a group, a complimentary horse ride is included in the ticket price from the entrance point down to the Siq. Intrepid Travel doesn't recommend that you take this option due to the safety and insurance liability involved.

Follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia with a short drive to the extraordinary desert scenery of Wadi Rum – a rugged lunar-like landscape framed by huge sandstone mountains. Head on a half-day jeep safari, taking you through some sublime scenery and uncovering traces of ancient civilisations seen in the many carved inscriptions found throughout the area, from pictographs to Thamudic, Nabataean and Arabic texts. The most enduring monuments in Wadi Rum are those carved by nature – natural rock bridges, towering rose-coloured sand dunes and scattered rocky peaks. Spend the night sleeping in a simple desert camp under a camel hair tent. Enjoy a delicious dinner cooked in an earthen oven by your desert dwelling Bedouin hosts, and soak in your truly unforgettable surroundings.

  • Desert camp (1 night)
  • Wadi Rum - 4WD jeep safari
  • Wadi Rum - Bedouin Desert Camp
  • Wadi Rum - Zarb Local Dinner

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Conditions are basic at the desert camp, but the hospitality of your hosts is legendary, and you'll treasure the memory of sleeping beneath the rugged landscape.

Tonight, a mattress and blankets are provided. Please be aware that while the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night and warm clothes and a sleeping bag are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months. Western-style toilet facilities are available.

This morning, leave Wadi Rum and make tracks for Aqaba. You’ll have some free time in Aqaba today, and have the option of day-use rooms to freshen up and store your luggage. Early in the evening, bid your Jordan local leader farewell and transfer to Aqaba port to board a comfortable air-conditioned ferry bound for Nuweiba. Depending on timing, weather conditions and delays, this journey over the Gulf of Aqaba can take between 2.5 and 5 hours, so be sure to have a good book or device with you to kill the time. When you arrive, meet your Egyptian group leader and transfer to your accommodation for a well-earned rest.

  • Aqaba - Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 to 6 hours.

The Aqaba–Nuweiba ferry can be rough, so take precautions if you experience sea sickness. The ferry can be delayed, but your Egypt group leader will meet you on arrival regardless of delays. In the event of adverse weather conditions, the ferry may be cancelled altogether, in which case overland travel through Israel and The Palestinian Territories will be arranged.

At the Aqaba ferry terminal, you will pass security and pay a JOD10 departure tax, keeping the receipt to get stamped. On board, take your passport to the counter in the middle of the ferry where it will stay for the journey. Once arrived, an escort will take you and your passport to the arrival terminal, where you will pass immigration and then meet up with your Egypt group leader. Egypt visa requirements are shown in the ‘Visa’ section of the Essential Trip Information.

It's a short drive to the laidback resort area of Dahab – your base for the next two nights. Dahab, meaning 'gold' in Arabic, has gone from a Bedouin fishing village to a popular tourist town, thanks to the excellent conditions for activities like diving, windsurfing and rock climbing. However, the town hasn't lost its authenticity and lowkey appeal that’s attracted visitors since the 1970s. The rest of the day is free for you to take in the many treats this spot has to offer – cafes, seafood or some snorkelling in the Red Sea. Dahab is well known for its drop-offs – spectacular coral reef shelves that plunge into the vast blue depths of the ocean below. There are also plenty of relaxed bars and restaurants to sit back and enjoy good local food and some sheesha.

In the morning, why not strap on a mask and head to the Blue Hole for some snorkelling at one of the best diving spots in the world. The area gets its name from a submarine sinkhole about 94 metres deep, with an arch in the coral reef down at 54 metres – a challenge that’s only open to highly experienced technical divers. Snorkellers can enjoy one of the greatest spots in the Red Sea here. Float on the surface and look down into an endless world of blue, then make your way around to ‘the Bridge’, where the visibility is always great and the untouched coral swarms with all different types of colourful fish and marine life. After you’ve had your fill of snorkelling, return to Dahab for an evening feast at a waterside restaurant, or perhaps head inland to Assalah, where local joints serve up plates of roast chicken and falafel with some cold regional beer.

  • Dahab - Blue Hole snorkelling - USD35

Today, jump on a flight to Egypt's chaotic capital. Cairo is one of the great ancient cities and its history can be symbolised by two imposing landmarks – the Pyramids of Giza and the Mosque of Mohammed Ali. You’ll have a second meeting at 6 pm tonight to get to know your new group. Beforehand, maybe explore the Mosque of Mohammed Ali at your own pace or head out to explore the local markets. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, the Christian Coptic sector is well worth a visit. Tonight, why not get dinner with your group and celebrate the next stage of an epic journey?

  • Cairo - The Citadel (entrance fee) - EGP450
  • Cairo - Coptic Museum (entrance fee) - EGP230
  • Cairo - Islamic Art Museum (entrance fee) - EGP270

This is a combo trip, meaning your trip leader and group members will likely change today.

After breakfast, set out to see some of Egypt’s most renowned sights. Visit Giza’s pyramids and Sphinx – instantly familiar yet retaining a mystique and power. Explore these structures that have stood tall for 4500 years, and you may even be able to go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu for an additional charge. Afterwards, perhaps make your way to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, and check out the optional Mummies Hall for a close encounter with some of the country’s most important queens and pharaohs. Later in the evening, meet your leader and travel to Giza train station, where you will board a sleeper train to Aswan (approximately 13 hours).

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Cairo - Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
  • Cairo - The Great Pyramid of Cheops (entrance fee) - EGP900
  • Cairo - The 3rd Pyramid of Menkawre (entrance fee) - EGP220
  • Cairo - The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization & The Royal Mummy Room (entrance fee) - EGP500
  • Cairo - The Egyptian Museum - USD40
  • Cairo - Saqqara and Memphis Afternoon Tour (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD109

The Great Pyramid of Khufu is occasionally closed to visitors. The complex can be very hot in the summer months, so be prepared for little available shade and pack appropriate clothing, sun protection and water, and be ready to walk. There is an additional 50 EGP fee to take photos in the Egyptian Museum.

The overnight train is air-conditioned and bedding is provided. There are toilets in each carriage but consider bringing additional toilet paper. General cleanliness of the train may vary. An included dinner and breakfast are served on board; however, you may want to stock up beforehand, particularly if you have dietary requirements. In rare circumstances you may be paired with a traveller of another gender, depending on the configuration. On other occasions, you may be sharing with others who are not part of our group.

The Nile, Elephantine Island and white-sailed feluccas, welcome to Aswan, Egypt's southernmost city. Today is a free day so take the opportunity to see such Aswan sites as the unfinished obelisk or the High Dam. The Nubian Bazaar is a must, while the excellent Nubian Museum is top of many visitors’ lists. Highly recommended is the beautiful Temple of Isis (goddess of health, marriage and wisdom), which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated to Philae Island. It's a marvel of decorative pylons featuring some of Egypt's finest carvings – definitely one of the real gems of Upper Egypt. The waterfront promenade, or corniche, runs alongside one of the Nile's most appealing stretches and is the perfect place to stop for a mint tea. Watch the waterfront come alive at dusk, with families out strolling, socialising and relaxing along the corniche.

  • Aswan - Sound & Light Show at Philae Temple - USD55

This morning is your best chance to head out of Aswan and visit stunning Abu Simbel, if you choose to. With the four gargantuan statues of Ramses guarding the Great Temple, this is one of Egypt's most memorable sights. Otherwise, the day is free for you to make your own discoveries. A popular afternoon option in Aswan is a sailboat ride around the islands in a traditional felucca, stopping off at the botanical gardens on Kitchener's Island. Your local leader will be on hand to help you get the most out of your day. You may prefer to just relax and take in the beauty of the Nile, or do some shopping in the vibrant bazaar.

  • Aswan - Abu Simbel Tour (minimum 4 people) - USD110
  • Aswan - Nubian Village Visit and Dinner - USD20
  • Aswan - Abu Simbel by Air - subject to availability - from - USD450

Your group leader will offer to organise the optional excursion to Abu Simbel for your group. This excursion will be limited to your group members only. If you would like to fly to Abu Simbel or join another excursion, please discuss options with your leader.

Please note the Abu Simbel optional activity has a very early start – departure will be between 5 am and 6 am. You can get there by flying, or by the cheaper option of renting a minivan with a group and leaving very early (flights do not operate daily). The journey by land is 3 hours each way. It's best to visit at sunrise to avoid the heat. Speak to your group leader earlier in the trip for more information.

This morning, jump on a traditional Egyptian sailboat – or felucca – for a morning sail until lunch. After lunch on board the felucca, arrive at a Nubian homestay on the west bank of the Nile. Here, you’ll learn about the local way of life with a walk through the surrounding countryside and agriculture fields to reach the homestay. The house is in traditional Nubian style, with a sandy courtyard in the middle where the family gathers for meals, and bedrooms to the side – this is where you’ll be staying for the night. Get into the swing of Egyptian life by lending a hand in the kitchen to help cook dinner, or maybe kick around a football in the courtyard with the kids. There are few better ways to understand a country and its people than with a local homestay, and you’ll have the chance tonight to soak it all up.

  • Homestay (1 night)

Board another felucca today and enjoy a day out on the river, seeing rural Egyptian daily life play out on the banks before spending a night under the stars. Your sailing crew will provide all of your onboard meals, which are hearty and delicious. The felucca is a traditional wooden boat with broad canvas sails, offering some shade and protection from the elements, but there is no cabin or enclosed section – watching the sun setting over the Nile in the evening from an open deck is an experience you won't forget.

  • Nile Felucca (1 night)
  • Nile - Felucca overnight sailing trip
  • Aswan - Kom Ombo Temple (entrance fee) - EGP360

After farewelling the felucca crew, take a private van to Luxor. Today you will explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharoahs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak is a house of the gods built over a period of some 200 years. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun. The rest of the day will be free to relax, shop in the bazaar (open until quite late) or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a local teahouse.

  • Luxor - Karnak Temple
  • Edfu - Edfu Temple (entrance fee) - EGP450
  • Luxor - Luxor Temple (entrance fee) - EGP400
  • Luxor - Luxor Museum (entrance fee) - EGP300
  • Luxor - Karnak Temple Sound & Light Show Tour - USD45
  • Luxor - Mummification Museum (entrance fee) - EGP200

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Rise early this morning and head into the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are over 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. With your leader, explore this sprawling and spectacular place, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BC) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where discoveries are still being made. Your group leader will explain the history and legends of these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs. Visit three of the most interesting royal tombs and then continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut – a stunning colonnaded building set against high cliffs that create a spectacular natural amphitheatre. The legendary Hatshepsut had this mortuary temple built to signify her importance and honour her ancestors.

  • Luxor - Valley of the Kings (entrance to 3 tombs)
  • Luxor - Hatshepsut Temple
  • Luxor - Tomb of Tutankhamun (entrance fee) - EGP500
  • Luxor - Dinner with a local family - USD20
  • Luxor - Hot Air Balloon over the Valley of the Kings - USD130
  • Luxor - Medinat Habu Temple (entrance fee) - EGP200
  • Luxor - Tomb of Queen Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens (entrance fee) - EGP2000
  • Luxor - Valley of the Queens (entrance fee) - EGP180

You can purchase a camera ticket that will entitle you to take photos in any of the three tombs that you visit as part of your tour. The cost of the ticket is around EGP 300.

Charges for the optional activities mentioned today are for entry only OR for organised tour programmes facilitated by your group leader. In the past we have found that this suits most of our travellers. If you prefer to do your own thing, transport to sites is available and your leader can assist with organising this.

It’s possible to take a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings and the temples on the west bank, subject to weather conditions. There is an additional charge for this activity and your leader will be able to help book this for you. Pick-up will be from your hotel between 4.30 and 5 am. Balloon capacity is 16–25, and cameras are prohibited in the basket (cellphones are allowed).

This morning, farewell the Nile to drive east to the beachside town of Hurghada. The green Nile valley is soon left behind as you head out into the Eastern Desert. As you pass by rocky hills, the glittering waters of the Red Sea come into view and the rugged bulk of the Sinai Peninsula looms through the haze on the opposite shore. A vibrant beach resort, Hurghada is by no means a typical adventure destination. After checking in to your hotel, take a leader-led orientation walk to get your bearings and to scope out some of the local restaurants.

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Transfer to the Hurghada Marina and climb aboard your motor yacht for a trip around the Red Sea Marine Park where you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel one of the most magnificent reefs in the Red Sea – fine reef walls, lovely fan corals and colourful fish all await. Your captain will select three separate locations to maximise your experience. Your snorkelling gear is provided. Lunch will consist of a delicious feast of kofta, salads, fish and rice and soft drinks, tea and coffee are provided throughout the day. Head back to Hurghada mid-late afternoon and transfer back to the hotel.

  • Hurghada – Red Sea Snorkelling Adventure

Check out of your hotel this morning and make the journey back to Cairo by private vehicle. When you arrive, visit the Islamic parts of the city and the frenetic backstreets of the local Khan el-Khalili bazaar with your group leader. The ‘Khan’ is one of the biggest and oldest markets in the world, sprawling around an old area known as Al-Azhar, a warren of alleys with stalls serving up a succession of intoxicating scenes and a quintessentially Cairo experience. You might explore the gold market, ‘Perfume Street’ and the spice market, where heady aromas hang in the air like a thick blanket of Damascene cloth (which can be purchased next door in the cloth market!).

  • Cairo - Khan al-Khalili bazaar visit
  • Cairo - Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids Tour - USD55
  • Cairo - Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids (entrance fee) - USD20

Jump in a private van today and follow the ‘desert road’ to the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria. Egypt's second largest city and main port, locals call this vibrant city the Bride of the Mediterranean Sea. On arrival, take an orientation walking tour with your leader. The Greek architect Dinocrates built Alexandria in 331 BC under the orders of Alexander the Great. The city, immortalising Alexander's name, quickly flourished into a prominent cultural, intellectual, political and economic metropolis. Take some time to stroll along the corniche and take in some fresh Mediterranean air. Alexandria at night is not to be missed, with the whole city lighting up.

  • Alexandria - Qaitbay fortress (entrance fee) - EGP150

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Today, head back to a more recent period in Egyptian history with a visit to El Alamein and the war museum located there. El Alamein sits on the Mediterranean Sea, 106 kilometres west of Alexandria, and it played an important role in significant World War II battles. The area was a turning point in the North African campaign, where the Allies held out against, and eventually pushed back and defeated, the Afrika Korps of Rommel. The area contains a number of memorials from the countries who lost soldiers here – Greece, South Africa, Australia, Italy – as well as a war cemetery that’s home to the graves and names of the thousands who lost their lives. In the museum, discover the story of the events that unfolded here, and then return to Alexandria. Alexandria is well known for its seafood, so don't forget to feast on some fresh fish while you're in town.

  • El Alamein - War Museum
  • Alamein - Commonwealth Cemetery - Free

This morning, head underground and delve into the mysteries of the Kom Ash Shuqqafa catacombs. This Roman burial site is the largest of its kind in Egypt and was discovered, quite accidentally, by a hapless donkey. The crypts are 20 metres below street level, and what probably began as a small family tomb grew into a labyrinth of chambers that could accommodate more than 300 bodies. Stop by the strikingly modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, inspired by the original great library of Alexandria and built to hold over 8 million books. Afterwards, head to El Morsi Abu El Abbas Mosque, the largest in the city. During your free time, perhaps take the opportunity to see the Citadel of Qaitbay, a fortress overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where the famous lighthouse once stood. You’ll then leave Alexandria and return to Cairo (approximately 5 hours), arriving around 4 pm. The afternoon is yours to spend as you please, and at night, why not gather together your travel crew for a celebratory kebab, kofta, or sheesha.

  • Alexandria - Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
  • Alexandria - Bibliotheca Alexandrina
  • Alexandria - Morsi Abu El Abbas Mosque
  • Alexandria - Alexandria National Museum (entrance fee) - EGP180
  • Alexandria - Roman Amphitheatre (entrance fee) - EGP150

19 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 6 dinners

A BIT ABOUT OUR EGYPT AND JORDAN TOURS

When you book Egypt and Jordan tours through us, you are booking high quality tours from an Egypt tour operator that has been making travel dreams come alive ever since 1955. With so much experience behind the tours we offer, we believe that no other tour operator is better equipped than we are to provide a flawless travel experience to these incredible destinations.

When it comes to booking Egypt and Jordan tours, it is perfectly understandable that people have many concerns. Is the price right; what sort of hotels will they be staying in, and will there be someone they can turn to if something goes wrong? These are just a few common concerns, but at NileCruiseHolidays.com, all these concerns are not even relevant because we have totally eliminated them.

To begin with, our Egypt and Jordan tours cost, on average, about 15% less than the industry standard. Our clients also don’t have to worry about where they will be staying because we have partnered with some of the best hotels, and our clients are always booked into 4 or 5 hotels, just as they are always booked onto 5-Star Nile cruises. The only exception is when there simply aren’t any 4 or 5 star hotels in the area, but even then, you can be sure that you will be staying at the best of what is available.

We believe in transparency, so a list of the hotels where you will be staying in is included in all of our Egypt and Jordan tour itineraries. If you click on one of our available tours, and then you click on the “Prices” tab on the left hand side of the page, you will see all the various price options, as well as a list of the relevant hotels.

Last but not least, when you travel with us, you are never really left on your own. Our representatives will always be airports to greet you on arrivals, and they’ll be there to bid you farewell on departures.

During your tours in Egypt you will have your very own Egyptologist tour guide and a driver for your tours in and around Cairo. There will also be one of our English speaking Egyptologist tour guides aboard the cruise ship for the duration of your cruise, and our tour representatives and guides in Jordan will also be right there with you every step of the way.

EXPLORING THE VERY BEST OF CAIRO AND BEYOND

As is to be expected, each of our Egypt and Jordan tours are designed to be unique, which naturally means that the various itineraries vary from one to the other, but you can be sure that all of them will include visiting several of the very best Cairo tourist attractions, although some of these might be a short distance away from Cairo, rather than being in Cairo itself.

Okay, let’s take a brief look at some of the amazing places which you can expect to see when you book one of our Egypt and Jordan tours:

The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx  – It should come as little surprise that the Giza necropolis features in all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. After all, the great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are quite literally the face of Ancient Egypt. They are not only the most instantly recognizable sight in Egypt, but also the most visited ancient site.

What many visitors don’t realize, however, is that the Giza pyramids are by no means the oldest pyramids in Egypt. The Dashur Pyramids all predate the Giza Pyramids, as does the Djoser Pyramid at the Saqqara necropolis.

Another common misconception is that many people automatically assume that all, or at least most of the pharaohs were laid to rest in pyramids. In reality, only a few pharaohs were buried in pyramids, while the vast majority of pharaohs were buried in rock-cut tombs.

The Royal Saqqara Necropolis  – The Saqqara necropolis is an ancient royal burial ground which is located just a short drive away from Cairo, and it features in most, if not all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. While there are several fascinating things to see at this site, it is best known for its Djoser Pyramid, which is also often called the Step Pyramid.

This huge and intricate pyramid complex was built during the 27 th  century BC, making it the oldest pyramid of its kind ever discovered. It was also the very first stone building or large stone structure ever built.

The Egyptian Museum  – The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is another attraction which features in all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. Of course, if you don’t want to visit the museum or any other sites mentioned in our tour itineraries, then our customized Egypt and Jordan tours would be your best option because they can be tailored to meet your own exact needs.

tours of egypt and jordan

The Egyptian Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts that represent a period of around 5,000 years. There are more than 100,000 artifacts on display, and even more which are locked away in storage due to a lack of space, but this is all due to change shortly when the all-new Grand Egyptian Museum opens at Giza, hopefully in 2020.

One of the most fascinating areas in the museum is an area known as the Treasures Room, where all the artifacts from King Tutankhamen’s tomb are on display. There’s also a Mummies room where visitors can see real mummies, but a separate ticket is required for this room, and it is not included in our Egypt and Jordan tours. Tickets can however be purchased in person at the museum.

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar  – Our Egypt and Jordan tours simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Cairo’s famous Khan El Khalili Bazaar. Yes, you can visit bazaars and markets all over Egypt and the rest of the Middle East, but you can be sure that not a single one of them can be compared to the Khan El Khalili Bazaar which has essentially be open ever since 1389. It is one of the oldest open-air markets in the Middle East, and also thought to be the biggest.

Even though shopping malls have started to become incredibly popular in Cairo, this bustling market is still the place where most everyday Egyptian go to buy their daily groceries and other odds and ends. It is a great place to do a bit of shopping, but it is also a lovely place to stroll around while doing some people watching.

THE UNFORGETTABLE MAGIC OF NILE RIVER CRUISES

tours to egypt and jordan

All of our Egypt and Jordan tours include a Nile River cruise, either from Aswan to Luxor or from Luxor to Aswan. These 5-Star Nile cruise packages are a perfect blend of relaxation and sightseeing. They really do allow you to discover the ancient wonders of the Nile River Valley in absolute comfort and style.

The various tours and excursions you enjoy during your cruise are all small group tours consisting of a small number of our other clients, and one of our professional English speaking Egyptologist tour guides.

While Nile cruise itineraries might not all be the same, you will still get to see the top attractions in Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor.

In Aswan, for example, you can expect to see places such as the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the wonderful ancient Temple of Isis which is also called the Temple of Philae. During your cruise, the vessel will also dock at Kom Ombo and at Edfu, and during these stops you will be taken to see the incredible Kom Ombo Temple which was dedicated to two different gods, as well as the Temple of Haeroris which is the best preserved ancient temple ever discovered.

Finally, when it comes to Luxor, you will be taken to see and explore the massive Karnak Temple complex and Luxor Temple on the East Bank, and on the West Bank you can look forward to visiting Queen Hatshepsut Temple; the Colossi of Memnon, and Valley of the Kings. Valley of the Kings was a royal burial site where 63 tombs have been discovered, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen.

ENJOY THE TIMELESS CHARM OF JORDAN

tours in egypt and jordan

Stunning Wadi Rum – a valley cut into sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan.

After enjoying an incredible Nile River cruise, it will then be time for your transfer to Amman international Airport in Jordan for the second phase of our Egypt and Jordan tours. While individual itineraries differ, some Jordan tourist attractions are included in most, if not all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. For example, most of these package tours will include a sightseeing tour in Amman.

The Rose City of Petra is another ancient site that practically all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. Also known as the Lost City of Petra, this indescribable site features an ancient city that was carved out of the sandstone cliffs of a long and deep narrow gorge by the ancient Nabateans.

It once served as a major trading post until it was eventually deserted, after which it all but forgotten before being rediscovered during the 19 th  century. Simply put, no amount of words can truly describe this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most of our Egypt and Jordan itineraries also include a visit to the Dead Sea where visitors can experience floating on the mineral-dense water. Yes it is true, you really can float effortlessly on the water, and even read a book while you are doing so.

Because of the ultra-high salinity of the water, there the Dead Sea is completely devoid of aquatic life. The banks of the Dead Sea are the lowest dry place on earth at more than 400 meters below sea level.

Wadi Rum is another place which features in most of our Egypt and Jordan tour packages, a desert area made famous by the movie, Lawrence of Arabia. As to be expected, all our tour packages also include visiting several other historical sites but these vary, depending on which one of our Egypt and Jordan tours you opt for

ONE VACATION, THREE DESTINATIONS

If our classic Egypt and Jordan tours just aren’t enough, and you are looking for an even more immersive travel experience, then our 19 day Egypt, Jordan and Morocco tours might be just what you are looking for. When you book one of these tour packages, you will get to see and enjoy all the same incredible places as you would if you were to book one of our regular Egypt and Jordan tours.

You will also get to enjoy a wonderful 5-day Nile River cruise that will also take you to the same places, but the big difference is, you will also get to experience the magic of Morocco with its 5 imperial cities and its vast amount of unspoiled natural beauty.

Enjoy marvelous tours of the 5 imperial cities: Casablanca; Rabat; Fez; Meknes, and Marrakech, and soak up the beauty and charm as you drive in air-conditioned comfort from one place to next. Stop at remote little villages; mix with the locals while weaving your way along a winding mountain pass through the High Atlas Mountains.

Morocco can compete with Egypt in terms of ancient monuments, but it makes up for it in so many other ways. After all, there’s a good reason why Morocco has become such a tremendously popular travel destination.

YOUR TIME, YOUR BUDGET, YOUR VACATION

Customizable Itinerary

Amman – charmed by jordan’s traditional capital.

Amman seems to blend into the desert, the soft yellow of its buildings matching the dusty tones of its surroundings. It’s a capital that’s soft and gentle, one that has maintained its old-world traditions into the 21st century. Chatter emanates from roadside cafes, an old amphitheater is hidden amongst the suburbs, and you’ll find that the locals stick true to classic concepts of good hospitality. On your first afternoon, you’ll realize that there are still capital cities where strangers greet each other on the streets and saying hello is part of the norm. Today you’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your five-star accommodations at the Grand Hyatt Amman, where you can quickly feel part of the style and culture of this fascinating country.

The sensational ambiance of the Grand Hyatt Amman derives from the collection of award-winning chefs, wellness experts, and dedicated staff ensuring your first-class hospitality experience. The sophisticated rooms have a stylish touch blending traditional design with modern luxuries for a sophisticated style. Relish the distinctive, authentic, and harmonious charms inside the fascinating setting merging Amman’s past and present. The winding streets beneath the central fortress contain hidden pockets of falafel stands and local restaurants filling the air with the aromas of mint, humus, and yogurt. The rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the charms of Amman at your preferred pace by discovering the Roman theatre or wandering through the contemporary art gallery of Darat Al Funun.

What's Included:

Amman – The Majestic Roman Ruins of Jerash

Gazing up at the Roman ruins of Jerash, you start to wonder why there are so few people around. The columns rise majestically, standing on a hill that overlooks a valley of olive groves. Huge pieces are strewn across the ground, from rugged bricks to slabs that once made up the Temple of Hercules. Visit similar ruins in Greece or Turkey, and you’ll struggle to move for other tourists. Yet Jerash almost feels isolated, deserted and untouched since the Roman Empire evaporated.

The ancient city dates back to the 1st century BC and flourished until the mid-8th century AD. The outline of the hippodrome contains traces of its former glory where chariot races attracted up to 15,000 spectators. The graceful ruins of the Temple of Zeus adorn the hilltop blending a fabulous view over the city’s remains with strong boulders embodying importance of the once significant structure. Jerash just one of the stops on your half-day tour from Amman, just one of the remarkable monuments that are scattered across Jordan.

Petra – Past the Crusader Castles to Ancient Petra

Travelers have been going up and down the King’s Highway for over 5,000 years, and the road is filled with sights from across the centuries. Mount Nebo is a place of pilgrimage with remarkable views over the Dead Sea; Christian mosaics illuminate the walls in Madaba, where a Byzantine church maintains the oldest map of Palestine in existence. Kerak Castle evokes stories of the crusaders as the largest fortress in Jordan with fountains dating back to the 2nd century AD.

Then the valley opens up, and suddenly you’re looking down on the sandstone city of Petra. It’s a five-hour drive from Amman to Petra, but there are many stops en route, with the guide aiming to get you a sunset glimpse of the old city before your private tours over the next two days. Over the day, you’re likely to realize that one of the country’s greatest highlights is its humility. Rather than shout and overly advertise its attractions (other than Petra), Jordan likes to leave a lot for visitors to discover first hand.

Petra – Private Guided Tours of the Remarkable City of Petra

Wander the ancient corridor, through a red canyon that gets narrower with every footstep. Sprinkles of dust puff up as you get closer and the rock becomes marked with intricate swirls of orange and maroon. It feels like you’re immersed in nature, lost in the marvel of the desert. But then the canyon opens from nowhere, and you’re staring at a whole city carved into the sandstone. Remarkable tombs and temples grace the rock faces, with columns and sculpted sphinxes etched high onto mountains. Walk for another five minutes, and you learn that these first temples are just the start, just one suburb of an ancient city that stretches for many miles across the desert.

Petra has far too much to see for a single day. Much like a modern capital city, you need to journey out to its disparate suburbs and distinctive areas. A local guide will discuss the options for this vacation, as the exact routes will depend on your energy levels and how far you’d like to walk. You might also want to split the days up, seeing different areas at sunrise and sunset, leaving a few relaxed hours at the hotel when the sun is high in the sky.

As well as the famous temples, Petra is packed with caves, the homes of local people for many centuries. Over these two days, you’ll meet a family that occupies one of these caves, sharing a glass of tea and experience time-honored hospitality. The Treasury will cause you to fall in love with Petra through the iron-laden sandstone originally erected to serve as a tomb for King Aretas III. The pillars glisten with golden orange light between nine and 11am.

Dead Sea – From the Red Desert to Luxury Along the Famous Salty Waters

Jordan’s remarkable natural treasures are connected on your final full day in the country. Panoramas stretch out in Wadi Rum, the desert dunes blurring into ochre-colored escarpments that stand like sentinels to time. It’s always an adventure here, bumping past the springs used by Lawrence of Arabia and the vistas can stay with you for decades. The landscapes embodies both unforgiving rawness of Jordan’s terrain, as well as the breathtaking natural beauty featured in the mountain Jebel Rum. The western flank of the canyon soars over Rum village at 5,754 feet above sea level attracting rock climbers, hikers, and wild ibexes overlooking the towering sandstone arches and red sand dunes of the stunning moonscape.

You have the option of staying in Wadi Rum overnight combining authentic charm and sophisticated beauty at Sun City Camp. The attentive staff and unparalleled location provide a majestic experience amid the panoramic view of the valley floor, ascending mountains, and scattered sandstone pillars. You can relax in the peaceful comforts of your private luxury tent staring up at the stars, venture into the vast sky in a hot air balloon, or discover the indelible marvels of the desert on a trekking excursion.

Then it’s back along the King’s Highway to a luxurious five-star resort Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea on the banks of the renowned salt lake at the earth’s lowest point, where rocks climb high above surreal green waters. Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea embraces the majesty of Jordan’s illustrious nature and fascinating history within luxurious accommodations. Flawless service epitomizes elegance with staff taking pride in their fine attention to detail amidst the gorgeous scenery along the banks of the Dead Sea. Celebrated restaurants, a soothing spa, a shimmering infinity pool, and easy access to the historic marvels along Jordanian countryside make Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea an exceptional destination. In the afternoon, take a dip in the water. There’s enough salt for you to sit in the sea, making for another surreal photo from Jordan’s untouched land. You’ll spend the night in five-star opulence with sublime views over the water and its marvelous sunset scenes.

Cairo – Captivating by Egypt’s Capital

Amman and Cairo couldn’t be more different, one with the atmosphere of a forgotten town, the other showcasing the colorful bustle of a modern capital. Cairo may be big and busy, but that’s part of its charm, especially with a local guide showing you the customs and secrets. In the morning, you’ll transfer back to Amman Airport for the flight to Cairo, where the afternoon can travel in many directions. The guide can show you many sides of the city, from its affluent leafy suburbs to its famous bridges and squares, or its medieval streets and its much older treasures, including the narrow medieval lanes of Khan al Khalil market. Colored glass lamps dangle from open stalls and the aromas of black pepper and coriander emanates from the restaurants. A traditional meze lunch is included, and you have time to settle into the ambiance of the country amid the scent of fresh mint. A five-star hotel provides pure relaxation after the day in the city.

Cairo – Private Tour of the Pyramids and Relics of Ancient Egypt

Now the pyramids, the architectural wonders that hardly seem real even when you’re sitting on the bottom step. Enter past the Sphinx, passing the guardian’s steely glare to the three icons standing proudly amongst the desert. With every footstep, they loom larger, rising over 130 meters into the blissful blue sky. Your guide knows the best photographic angles, and you stay ahead of the crowds, climbing inside one of the temples and getting a sense of how the ancient wonder of the world was crafted. From Giza, you head to Saqqara and ride out to the first ever Egyptian pyramid on the back of a camel. It’s a remarkable sight, crumbling slowly yet still as classically shaped as it was more than 3,500 years ago. It’s a full-day tour today, but it moves at a relaxed pace, and the emphasis is on really exploring, rather than simply ticking off the famous sights.

Cairo – Treasures From the Tombs and the Medieval Streets of Cairo

Although many of the pyramids were looted, the collection of treasures that have been unearthed from them remains unfathomable. While pieces from the tombs are scattered in museums across the world, it’s the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities that houses the greatest chest of gems and treasures recovered from the temples. You’ll be glad to have a guide, as these precious artifacts are difficult to piece together amongst the seeming disarray of the museum.

The Egyptologist leads you through the most remarkable of what’s on offer then takes you into Coptic Cairo and medieval Cairo, historic suburbs that have retained their atmosphere of old-world Christianity and Islam. Comparing the two provides a sublime journey through architecture styles and atmospheres, from charming 6th-century churches to calligraphy draped across markets and lanes. Most of the suburbs are pedestrianized, a maze of lanes that twist through the stories of history, and then suddenly open out onto squares of alfresco terraces filled with the invigorating scent of brewing coffee.

Aswan – Setting Sail Along the Nile River

It’s a short flight to Aswan, where you’re transferred to a luxury boat for a 3-day cruise down the River Nile. The route connects the legacy of Ancient Egypt’s dynasties, passing temples and tombs that are dotted across the banks. Start at Philae Temple and then gaze up at the Unfinished Obelisk. Afterward, set sail down the river with a cocktail reception leading you north towards Luxor. Watch the life unfold along the riverbanks then marvel at Kom Ombo Temple, the perfect vista for your first dinner on board. The boat moors here and you’ll soon be enveloped by the tranquility of a Nile River cruise, especially when bands of yellow and red light up the dusk sky.

Edfu – Legendary Temples as the Nile Cruise Continues

Explore Kom Ombo Temple at sunrise, its sacred crocodiles sculpted into the pillars along the riverbank. Then wander to the temple’s opposing side and come face to face with odes to the sun god. Next, you continue the journey north, enjoying coffee and brunch as the Nile widens. By midday, you’re in Edfu, where lunch is served with another enigmatic view, this time of the Temple of Horus. The aroma of chickpeas, ghee, and cinnamon stay with you until the late afternoon. Later in the day, you explore this temple’s legend and legacy, as well as its remarkable size reaching 76 meters wide and 79 meters long. The temple structure was completed in 57 BC but established in the 3rd century BC. On a busy vacation through Jordan and Egypt, this Nile cruise provides many relaxed hours; just sit back and watch the wonders of the Nile slowly emerge from the desert.

Luxor – Fabulous Monuments of Luxor and Karnak

Esna Lock opens, and you cruise through, onwards towards the majestic pinnacles of Luxor. You can see the temples from afar, their columns rising high above the banks. And when you disembark, you get to explore the monuments with a private guide, steering you away from the tour groups and into a mysterious world of hieroglyphs and mosaics, spiraling pillars and ancient inscriptions. Of all Egypt’s monuments, it’s the temples of Karnak and Luxor that most ignite the imagination, such majestic scale and intricate detail connected by the old Avenue of Sphinx. The ancient lane once extended for approximately three kilometers. Historians believe up to 1,350 sphinxes lined the avenue on which the Opet Festival took place annually celebrating the symbolic reenactment of the marriage between Amun and Mut. Fragments of 850 sphinxes dating back to the 14th century BC were recently uncovered. After a full afternoon exploring on foot, you return to the boat for a farewell dinner and final evening on board.

El Quseir – Exploring the Valley of the Kings and Onwards to the Red Sea

It’s worth setting the alarm for your final desert sunrise, a flaming ball sending a mirage of colors across the soft facades of Luxor Temple. After breakfast, you follow the direction of the sun, disembarking onto Luxor’s West Bank and the Valley of the Kings. This is where the pharaohs of old Thebes were entombed, and the scale of the monuments is almost too much to take in. A private tour breathes life into the hieroglyphs and images, so much history found in every corner. You explore four of the tombs, heading downstairs into the mysterious atmosphere of yesteryear, the Egyptologist helping to paint a picture of ancient Egypt’s 18th dynasty. It’s a short hop over to the nearby Valley of the Queens and elaborate mortuary temples, before a meze lunch at a restaurant with views over Luxor’s West Bank. Later in the afternoon, you continue by road to El Quseir, where a boutique Red Sea resort is your base for the final three nights.

Day  14 - 15

El Quseir – Pure Tranquility Along a Hidden Part of the Red Sea

Exotic greens mix with surreal blues as you gaze over the Red Sea. The waters lap gently onto deserted sand that’s backdropped by palms and spaced sun loungers. There are few people here, just a handful of guests enjoying the resort’s huge private beach and sense of pure tranquility. These two days are at your leisure, and there’s little to interrupt the repose. Remove the watch, discard the shoes, feel your feet on the soft sand, and spend hours watching the sun glide across the desert sky. El Quseir is remote and a more boutique alternative to Egypt’s better-known Red Sea destinations. And for that reason, it’s as serene as it always has been. There are excellent options for diving and snorkeling should you wish to do more than lie about on the beach.

Hurghada – Departure

Follow the Red Sea north on the short journey to Hurghada and its international airport, where you leave Egypt after 16 days amongst the highlights of both Jordan and Egypt.

Detailed Description

Surreal chronicles fill the landscapes of Jordan and Egypt. Roman monuments stretch 20 meters into the sky yet are untouched by tourism. Temples and tombs reveal the ostentatious tastes of Egyptian pharaohs. Ancient cities are sculpted into sandstone while majestic pyramids leave a legacy that can only be truly understood when you’re actually there. These are the lands where the great ancient civilizations flourished, from Thebes to the Roman Empire, medieval Islamic wonders to dynasties that existed 2,000 years before them. Best of all, these legacies to human history stand almost completely untouched. There’s so much to see and explore here that you’re only ever an hour away from the next mysterious ode to the past.

This 16-day private tour explores all the main highlights of Jordan and Egypt, starting with six nights in Jordan and finishing with three nights on the serene Red Sea coast at El Quseir. You connect the dots of civilizations, from the ruins of Jerash to the remarkable Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Along the way, you’ll enjoy all the classic Egyptian and Jordanian experiences, including drinking tea in one of the sandstone caves of Petra, riding a camel to a three-millennium old temple, lounging in the Dead Sea, and spending three days cruising down the Nile River. Many of the attractions are remarkably close to each other, and it’s easy to see a lot on any relaxed day. Your different destinations are connected by an assortment of flights and private road transfers that have inspiring stops en route.

Amman is a leisurely place to start and a great introduction to the region. You’ll have two relaxed days in Jordan’s capital, including a private tour out to the Roman ruins of Jerash. Take the King’s Highway, stopping at Mount Nebo and the crusader castles en route to Petra, where you glimpse the ancient city at sunset. Two full days of flexible private tours reveal the best of the sandstone caves and carvings, complete with meeting a family that still lives in the ancient city. On the way to Amman, you’ll journey through the surreal Wadi Rum desert and the equally peculiar Dead Sea.

Exploring Egypt starts with the pyramids, both those at Giza and the first ever pyramid at Saqqara. Spend three nights immersed in Cairo’s history, including the churches of Coptic Cairo, treasures in the Egyptian Museum, and some of the world’s finest medieval Islamic architecture. Fly to Aswan and the next three nights are spent on a luxury River Nile cruise. Disembark to explore the temples left behind by Egyptian dynasties, and then lose yourself in the marvels of Luxor, the site of historic Thebes. There’s a lot to experience, and it’s all complemented by your final stop, the untouched sand of El Quseir. Here, you relax after the journey and recall the wonders from Petra to the pyramids and everything in between.

Few places in the world hold such an array of archeological wonders such as Egypt and Jordan. Steeped in history, Egypt and Jordan tours venture into the ancient capitals and world wonders that have inspired for generations.

From the massive stone structures that make up the Pyramids of Giza to the lost city of Petra, these two countries are the chance to visit a fascinating region half as old as time.

Our journey as a company began in this captivating region, and since 1987 we have been delighted to take intrepid travellers on insightful tours across Egypt and Jordan. The allure of the mighty pharaohs and their monumental projects never cease to amaze.

While the Pyramids of Giza are often thought to be the pinnacle of important sites found within Egypt, our groups on Egypt and Jordan tours often remark that they are just the beginning.

Walk along the avenue of 1000 Sphinxes at Karnak Temple, which was built, added to, dismantled, restored, enlarged and decorated numerous times during its colourful history of over 1,500 years. Venture to the ancient trading town of Kom Ombo, which is actually two temples in one complete with a mummified crocodile which was once worshiped by the Egyptians.

Saddle up with a horse ride in the territory of the Valley of the Kings, to witness not only the destination of the funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the first woman to rule as pharaoh, but also to get a sense of the modern Egyptian life in the quiet countryside villages.

With such an overwhelming list of immense temples and complexes, history tends to overshadow the reputation of natural beauty found in the area. Watching the sun rise and set over the sandy expanse of the Sahara as it extends from the green oasis on the banks of the Nile is as memorable as the hieroglyphics carved into the stone.

The colours of gold and pink that line the narrow gorge of the souq in Petra are nearly as photogenic as the elegant columns of the Treasury itself.

Sharing a cup of tea in a goat-haired tent in Wadi Rum with the Bedouin descendants who made up Lawrence of Arabia's army is an impactful moment of calm and an amazing experience within the land of red rocks that look as though they are melting in the setting sun.

The weightlessness one feels while soaking in the Dead Sea's turquoise waters is an unforgettable swim in the lowest place on earth.

In a land half as old as time, with features that make this region amongst some of the most rewarding journeys one can take, now is the right time to join our Egypt and Jordan tours, for it is a place that will etch itself into your memory and leave an impression for a lifetime.

Day 1 Arrive in Cairo Today we arrive in Cairo.* Al-Qahira, literally "The Vanquisher" or "The Conqueror", is the capital of Egypt (about to be replaced by the city of "New Cairo"). The combined populations of the five cities that make up the metropolitan area on the Nile are over 21,000,000, making it the largest urban area on the continent. Nicknamed "The City of a Thousand Minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, Cairo has long been a centre of the region's political and cultural life. * PLEASE NOTE - As tomorrow will be an early start and a full day, you may want to arrive a day early should your arrival time be late at night. Extra nights at the same hotel can be quoted/booked by your tour consultants once your flight schedule is known. Overnight in Cairo. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Cairo: Great Pyramids & the Sphinx - Grand Egyptian Museum This morning we kick off our comprehensive sightseeing program with some of the most iconic of Egyptian monuments: The Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. Impressive in their grandeur, the pyramids are estimated to have been constructed over a period of 20 years using more than 100,000 labourers each year. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, constructed from over two million stone blocks, is 135m (443 feet) high! You may enter one of the pyramids through a long, narrow passageway and explore the deep inner chambers (OPTIONAL - extra fee applicable). Later we visit the Sphinx. This feline-human was named by the Greeks because it resembled the mythical winged monster with a woman's head and lion's body. Legend has it that this "Sphinx" proposed a riddle to the Thebans and killed all who could not guess the correct answer! The Sphinx was carved from one solid piece of limestone. We then continue to the Great Egyptian Museum (GEM), where we can break for lunch at your choice of one of several on-site restaurants/cafes.* After our break, our visit of the museum begins with a 45-minute guided tour, with a "sneak peek" into this vast facility prior to the official opening of all of the galleries. As part of our tour, we will also learn about the history of the museum itself, including answers to the inevitable question: “why has it taken 20 years to build?” We will also learn of how the inspiration of ancient Egypt is reflected in the museum’s design and its various components. We’ll also receive an explanation of one of the main themes that repeats throughout GEM -- “Kingship and Eternity” -- and witness how this is reflected in the monuments accessible to us on today’s visit, namely: The Hanging Obelisk, the Colossal Statue of King Ramesses II, the ten Statues of King Senusret I (distance view), the Grand Staircase (distance view), double statues of Ptolemaic King and Queen, the Victory Column of King Merenptah, the statue of the god Hapy, and the Statue of King Ramesses II. Our visit will culminate with the ground-breaking "Tutankhamun - The Immersive Exhibition," which takes us on a mythical journey to the mesmerizing world of Ancient Egypt. Through state-of-the-art digital projections, you will have the unparalleled opportunity to step into the astonishing life of the legendary Golden King via an awe-inspiring audiovisual adventure that spans an astonishing 3,400 years of history. After our visit we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. * PLEASE NOTE that the above day description refers specifically to how our time in Cairo will be spent for our tours that occur in February/March 2024. After this time, as conditions warrant, this day will be adjusted to reflect our plans from Fall/Winter of 2024/25, when the GEM is expected to be fully-open to visitors. Overnight in Cairo (Giza). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Cairo: Dahshur, Memphis & Saqqara We have an early start for a full-day day of sightseeing. Our drive this morning takes us through the suburbs of Giza, past some small, colourful villages and plantations in the fertile Nile Valley. We first travel to the stunning site of Dahshur, known chiefly for several pyramids, mainly Senefru's Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, which are among the oldest, largest, and best-preserved in Egypt, built from 2613 to 2589 BC. These pyramids were an extremely important learning experience for the Egyptians as they provided knowledge and know-how to transition from step-sided pyramids to smooth-sided pyramids. Ultimately their breadth of experience would allow them to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. We continue to Memphis and Saqqara, chronologically the two most important sites in all of Egypt. Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom (ca 2700-2180 BC). Here we will see several statues in a garden-like setting, including the colossal statue of Rameses the Great. From Memphis we travel a short distance to Saqqara, the ancient burial site for the people of Memphis. On the site, considered by many archaeologists to be one of the world's most important excavations, is the Step Pyramid, constructed by Imhotep in the 27th century BC. The pyramid began as a simple mastaba, or long, flat tomb building. Over the course of time, Imhotep added to this mastaba five times -- the pyramid eventually measured 62m (203 feet) in height! While at Saqqara we also see the Serapeum, the tomb of the sacred Apis bulls that were associated with the god Ptah, whose cult center was in Memphis. An avenue of sphinxes leads to the Serapeum, which is composed of two long corridors that once housed the mummified remains of the bulls. After a full day we return to our hotel. Overnight in Cairo (Giza). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Cairo - Fly to Aswan: The High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk & Philae Temple Another early start for our flight to Aswan in Upper Egypt.* Aswan is Egypt's sunniest southern city and an ancient frontier town. Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life in Aswan is slow and relaxing. On arrival we'll take a trip to the High Dam of Aswan. Constructed between 1960 and 1971, the High Dam collects and stores water over a number of years so that the annual Nile flood can be controlled. From here we will have a panoramic view of Aswan to the north and Lake Nasser to the south. We also visit Philae Temple. The temple is dramatically situated on an island, so we enjoy a short boat journey to get to the site. The site is relatively small, but the charm of the setting and the excellent state of preservation makes this a must-see. On our way back to town, we'll visit the 'Unfinished Obelisk'. The obelisk's creators began to carve it directly out of bedrock, but cracks appeared in the granite and the project was abandoned. The bottom side of the obelisk is still attached to the bedrock. The unfinished obelisk offers unusual insights into ancient Egyptian stone-working techniques, with marks from workers' tools still clearly visible as well as ochre-coloured lines marking where they were working. * NOTE: The actual order of our sightseeing in Upper Egypt may vary depending on variables such as flight schedules and weather. Your Tour Leader will keep you apprised of any adjustments as the tour progresses. Overnight in Aswan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Aswan: St. Simeon Monastery & Kitchener's Island This morning we will take a private boat across the River Nile to the west bank. From here we travel by camel across the sandy desert to the Christian Monastery of St Simeon. Before we begin this easy trek, our Tour Leader and camel trainer will teach you the technique of riding a camel. This is a journey that can be undertaken by anyone at any age (one rider per camel). Our trek is about 45 minutes to the monastery, and then 15 minutes back to the riverbank. Those who prefer not to ride can travel by open truck to the monastery and meet up with the group there. Dating from the 6th century, and in use until the 13th century, the Monastery of St Simeon is one of the best-preserved Christian sites in Egypt. Inside we will see the chapel, living quarters, kitchen and dining areas, wine press, bake area and storerooms. On our tour we will also see the remains of some Coptic frescoes -- depictions of Christ and saints as well as many geometric patterns. We then return to the banks of the Nile and re-board our boat and ride among the islands dotting the Nile. Up the hill, above the river, is the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismailis, a Shi'ite sect based principally in India but with followers around the world. The tomb is an elegant pink granite structure of late 1950 origin. The main island in the middle of the Nile is called Elephantine Island because many of the rocks look like elephants bathing in the Nile. On the west side of the river is the beautiful Kitchener's Island, where we will have time to stroll through the rich botanical gardens. Later this afternoon we have a leisurely sail on a felucca, a traditional sailing vessel used for centuries for carrying goods and passengers along the Nile. Overnight in Aswan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Aswan: Abu Simbel A pre-dawn departure by road (+/- 3 hours, each way)* takes us south from Aswan across the Western Desert to Nubia, or the "Land of the Gold". Our destination this morning is the impressive Abu Simbel -- the imposing rock temples of Rameses II and his queen, Nefertari. We have a guided tour of this site, including the interior of the colossal temples. The Temple of Rameses II, with its immense statues of the Pharaoh seated on his throne, is one of the classic images of the power of the Pharaohs. Inside the temple you will see well-preserved wall decorations and several murals. There is a wonderful relief of Rameses presenting captives to various gods, including himself! We also gain insight into the reconstruction process by visiting the interior of the artificial mountain. Return by road to Aswan in time for a late lunch. * When visiting Abu Simbel we choose to travel by road instead of flying as the air schedules tend to be rather restrictive and do not always allow enough time at the site (much time is taken up by check-in, security, boarding, transferring etc). Driving frees us from this inconvenience and adds flexibility, plus allows us to see the High Dam en route. Departing very early ensures that we are at the site at the optimal time for photography; later in the morning, shadows fall across the temple making conditions less than ideal. Overnight in Aswan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Aswan - Luxor via Kom Ombo & Edfu This morning we say farewell to Aswan and travel by road to the Temple of Kom Ombo. In ancient times, Kom Ombo was strategically important as a trading town on the caravan route from Nubia to Cairo. Kom Ombo, actually two temples in one, is dedicated dually to Haroeris (Horus) and Sobek, respectively the god of the sky and the crocodile-headed god. Here we are able to see the remains of a mummified crocodile. Crocodiles no longer exist in the Egyptian part of the River Nile, but in Pharaonic times they lived here in great numbers and were worshipped as gods! From Kom Ombo we travel to the site of Edfu. As the largest and most completely preserved Pharaonic temple, albeit Greek-built, Edfu is dedicated to the god Horus. Construction of this temple began under Ptolemy III Euergetes I in 237 BC. We will allow time to explore this massive and impressive site, enclosed by walls and flanked by two large pylon gateways. Here we will also be able to see a Nilometer -- an ancient technique of measuring the Nile's water fluctuations and setting the level of taxes Overnight in Luxor. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Karnak Temple & Luxor Temple This morning we start our day with a guided tour of Karnak Temple. Karnak was built, added to, dismantled, restored, enlarged and decorated during its colourful history of over 1,500 years. At certain points in Egyptian history, this temple was the most important in all of Egypt. When we arrive at the temple you will be awed by the grandeur of the tremendous pylon gateway and the Avenue of 1,000 Sphinxes that originally ran all the way to the Nile and Luxor Temple! We will have a guided tour of the complex, massive by any standard. After our visit, we enjoy a break before our evening visit to Luxor Temple. The temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut, and Chons and was built during the New Kingdom, the focus of the annual Opet Festival, in which a cult statue of Amun was paraded down the Nile from nearby Karnak Temple to stay there for a while, with his consort Mut, in a celebration of fertility. Luxor temple is considered one of the largest ancient Egyptian temple complexes situated on the eastern bank of the river Nile. At the entrance is a huge tower built by King Ramses II. Overnight in Luxor. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Luxor: Valley of the Kings Early this morning we cross the River Nile by boat to the West Bank where the wealth of antiquities is outstanding. On the other side we will meet our donkey-cart transport for our excursion into the Valley of the Kings through the New Gourna Village and into the countryside. Avoiding the busier road, we will witness quiet village life along the way for about 40-45 minutes before re-uniting with our road transport for the final leg into the Valley of the Kings. Once in the isolated valley, dominated by large pyramid-shaped mountains, we will have a guided tour of three of the many tombs that are here.* The valley was the burial ground for kings throughout the New Kingdom. Note that some of the tombs have steep stairways and all are quite dark inside (you might find a pocket flashlight useful). We then proceed to the funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut -- the first woman to rule as pharaoh! We have a tour of this impressive complex, discovered in the mid-19th century and still under restoration. After our tour we return by bus through the countryside back to the river and the East Bank. During free time this afternoon, we suggest a visit to the excellent Luxor Museum or Mumification Museum. Tonight you may choose to visit the Sound and Light show at Karnak Temple (optional). * We do not include the tomb of King Tut, as it is very small and not very interesting, relatively speaking, but we allow time for you to see it if you wish (separate ticket). Overnight in Luxor. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Luxor: Valley of the Queens This morning we make an excursion the Valley of the Queens.* After crossing the Nile we will board our bus for the short journey to visit this wonderful necropolis on the western shore of the Nile. The Valley of the Queens was used as a burial site for the royal women of the 18th, 19th and 20th Dynasties. Ancient Egyptians called this place "Set Neferu" meaning Seat Of Beauty, and today only a few of the eighty tombs are open to the public (we will visit three). The Valley of the Queens holds far more than graves of queens. Please note that an OPTIONAL visit of the tomb of Queen Nefertari is available for an extra charge (your Tour Leader will advise of the current fee). As well as our visit to the Valley of the Queens we will also have a guided tour of the workers' village and the Madinat Habu temple. Madinat Habu, also known as the temple of Rameses III was known in ancient times as Djanet, and according to ancient belief, was the place were Amon first appeared. Both Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III built a temple dedicated to Amon here, and later Rameses III constructed his larger memorial temple on the site. * Due to periodic and unannounced closures of the tombs at the Valley of the Queens, your Tour Leader may substitute the Tombs of the Nobles, which are equally interesting. Overnight in Luxor. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Luxor: Dendera Temple & Time at Leisure This morning we enjoy an excursion to the fascinating temple of Dendera located north of Luxor on the banks of the Nile. Dendera Temple is one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt. Located in the city of Qena (60 km north of Luxor) Dendera was constructed for the worship of Goddess Hathor, goddess of love, beauty, and motherhood in the ancient Egyptian religion. The temple was founded by pharaoh Pepi I (2250 BC) and continued during the New kingdom (1550-1080 BC). What was left dates back to the Greco-Roman time in Egypt. The recent cleaning of the ceiling of the Dendera Temple has revealed has exposed some of the most vibrant and colourful paintings dating from antiquity. The temple has two decorated crypts, two halls with ceilings supported by columns and two funeral chapels, from where the famous "zodiac" from the Louvre comes. We return to Luxor for some well-deserved free time for independent exploration, shopping, napping etc after some full days of touring. The Luxor Museum is also worthwhile, as it displays a very good contextual story of Luxor and the nearby valley of the Kings and Queens. The wooden sarcophaguses are the highlight -- so vivid that it's hard to believe they are thousands of years old. Overnight in Luxor. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Luxor - Cairo: Museum of Egyptian Antiquities Today we fly back to Cairo. On arrival we proceed to the famous Museum of Egyptian Antiquities,* where enjoy a guided tour of some of Egypt's most beloved treasures. Among the 100,000 pieces housed on the museum's two floors is the famous exhibit of Tutankhamun whose tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. The tomb and treasures of this young Pharaoh, modest by Pharaonic Egyptian standards, is perhaps the best-preserved of the discovered tombs. We also see archaeological relics from the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom and Greco-Roman periods. There is also a separated area devoted to the best-known of the Tut antiquities (the Mummies Room), which you can enter for an optional extra fee (ask your Tour Leader for the current rate). * Please note that the above description is likely to be accurate for our tours scheduled for early 2024, when it is expected that the King Tut exhibition will still be housed at this site (rather than at the GEM). It remains unclear as to exactly what exhibits will be moved to GEM and when, but we expect that this museum will continue to function even after GEM is fully opened. Once this situation becomes clearer we will update this day's description. Overnight in Cairo (central). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Cairo: Coptic & Islamic Cairo - Khan el Khalili Today visit the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), a nice addition to the Cairo museum landscape and an excellent way to recap all that we have done and seen during our tour. We then drive through the neat, tree-lined streets of the Garden City area to Coptic Cairo, the centre of Christianity in Cairo.* We will walk the cobblestone streets and stop at a few of the churches, including that of Saint Sergius, presumed to be the spot where the Holy Family lived during their flight into Egypt. The present building dates from the 11th century. As we stroll along we will come to the recently restored Synagogue of Ben Ezra, the oldest Jewish synagogue in Egypt. Despite the 45 Jewish families that remain in Cairo, the synagogue is no longer operational. We then proceed to Islamic Cairo, where we will tour the Citadel, begun by Saladin in the 12th century. Today the Citadel's buildings are mainly from the Ottoman period, and are truly grand. From the Citadel, actually a complex of three mosques and four museums, we enjoy an amazing view of Cairo spread beneath the hilltop. Here we will see the fabulous Mosque of Mohammed Ali, also known as the "Alabaster Mosque." Finally we make a stop at Khan el Khalili, one of the most interesting bazaars, not only in Egypt, but also in all the Middle East. The atmosphere of this traditional market, together with the labyrinthine layout of the streets, gives visitors a glimpse into what medieval markets were once like. * The Coptic Cairo section of our program exists here in a tentative basis given ever-changing security considerations in this district. Your Tour Leader will advise of the current status once you have arrived on tour and a substitution may be put into place. Overnight in Cairo (central). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Cairo, Egypt - Amman, Jordan This morning we will fly from Cairo to Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World. The city's modern buildings blend with the remnants of ancient civilizations. The profusion of gleaming white houses, kebab stalls with roasting meat, and tiny cafes where rich Arabian coffee is sipped in the afternoon sunshine, conjure a mood straight from a thousand and one nights. Overnight in Amman. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Amman: Jerash & Amman City Tour Today we have a look at modern central Amman, visiting the Archaeological Museum, and the not-so-modern Roman Amphitheatre and the ruins of the Temple of Hercules. We then leave Amman by bus for a tour of the extensive Roman site of Jerash. In the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Jerash was a wealthy city and is today considered one of the most important and best preserved of all Roman sites. We visit the famous elliptical forum, the beautiful amphitheatre with its superb natural acoustics, and the site of the huge Temple of Artemis. We will stop for our evening meal en route back to our hotel. This allows us to use our bus transport for this purpose and make for an early-ish arrival back to to the hotel after a full day. Overnight in Amman. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Amman - Madaba - Mt Nebo - Shobak - Petra This morning we travel to Madaba, a small town famous for its magnificent mosaic floors. A unique mosaic covers the floor of St. George's church and consists of a huge map of the Holy Land as it appeared in the 6th century AD. Driving to the edge of the Jordan Valley we reach Mount Nebo from where Moses and the Children of Israel first saw the Promised Land. On a clear day you can look down to see the Dead Sea and the River Jordan. On the other side of the valley is the city of Jerusalem. Here we see a huge mosaic of hunting scenes covers the floor of a ruined Byzantine church. We leave Mt Nebo and travel south; along this route, castles and towns were positioned a one day's travel distance apart. Later we visit Shobak Castle, built by the Crusaders in 1115 and sacked by Muslim forces under Saladin in 1189. We finish our full day at Petra. Overnight in Petra. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Petra: Site Tour Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom from the fourth century BC to the 2nd century AD. From the 12th century until its rediscovery in 1812, Petra was lost to the world -- a closely guarded secret of the local tribes. Today the 'rose red city half as old as time' is probably the most impressive archaeological site in the Middle East, rivaling the temples and pyramids of Egypt in grandeur. This morning, on our way into the hidden valley of Petra, we will see the Obelisk Tomb and the irrigation system that carried water from a dam throughout the desert city. Access to the monuments of Petra is through a narrow gorge in the towering rocks called the 'Siq'. As we emerge from the 'Siq' you stand in awe in front of the 'Treasury' (El Kazneh), a graceful structure carved from the living rock. After pausing to admire the elegant columns and carvings we carry on into the valley where elaborate tombs are carved into the multi-coloured walls. Everywhere the sandstone swirls and twists in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink and white. Next we will see the Roman amphitheatre, carved directly out of the mountain, with space for over 3,000 spectators. Further on in the main valley of Petra, are the Royal Tombs including the Palace Tomb and the Silk Tomb. We visit the temple of the Nabataeans' main god, Dushara, and we also see the 'Temple of the Winged Lion'. Our formal guided tour of the site terminates with a visit to the Petra Nabataean Museum. At this point, you may explore further on your own, or return to our hotel to relax and/or shop. You may also take a strenuous walk up a narrow pass to see the magnificent 'Monastery' building, El Deir. The views of Petra and the surrounding area are expansive. The walk is steep and involves approximately 750 steps carved into the rock and will take APPROXIMATELY one hour up (30 minutes down). NOTE: Access to Petra is by means of footpath only. The main sites occur near ground that is level and well-worn, though the overall site is huge. Our pace is leisurely with frequent breaks; however, to fully experience Petra you must be prepared for a considerable amount of walking and little shade. Please note that we include lunch today on the site of Petra instead of dinner this evening, which allows us to maximize our time here and still enjoy a relaxing sit-down meal without having to rely on carry-in packed lunches. Your Tour leader can assist with your evening meal plans back in the village, which we do not include today. Overnight at Petra. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 18 Petra: El Beidha & Leisure Time This morning we travel by bus to the nearby Nabatean site of 'el Beidha' (known as 'Little Petra'). We will also see a settlement dating from the Neolithic period, some 8,500 years ago. This is one of the oldest sights in the Middle East; it shows evidence of habitation by a "Pre-Pottery" population who were herders experimenting with agriculture. We return to our hotel by bus. This afternoon, you can either relax or re-enter the breathtaking main site of Petra to further explore on your own. There are a number of scenic walks/hikes that one can enjoy within the site. Ask your Tour Leader for details. Overnight at Petra. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Petra - Wadi Rum This morning we depart Petra by road bound for Wadi Rum, where Lawrence of Arabia conducted many of his campaigns during the First World War. After a break for lunch, we’ll hop into smaller trucks and head out into the desert, where the sand is red and the huge rock formations resemble gigantic multi-layered cakes melting in the sun. We may be invited into a goat-hair tent to share a glass of tea with some Bedouin tribesmen -- the nomadic herdsmen of the desert who made up Lawrence's army. Running along the floor of the valley is the Hejaz Railway that Lawrence blew up repeatedly. Our excursion is a 3-hour route known as "Siq Al Barra and Om Eshreen." Tonight we will be accommodated in a luxury tented camp where we enjoy a unique blend of traditional Bedouin culture and modern comfort. Overnight in Wadi Rum. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 20 Wadi Rum - Dead Sea Today we travel north along the Dead Sea Highway to the Dead Sea. King David, King Herod, Jesus, and John the Baptist were closely linked with the Dead Sea and its surroundings. During the Egyptian conquest it is said that Queen Cleopatra obtained exclusive rights to build cosmetic and pharmaceutical factories in the area. Later the Nabataeans discovered the value of bitumen extracted from the Dead Sea used by the Egyptians. We hope to arrive at our Dead Sea hotel in time for lunch (on your own). The hotel is located on the shores of the sea where you will have the chance to swim and experience your amazing buoyancy in the ultra-salty waters. Overnight at the Dead Sea. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 21 Dead Sea - Departure Today we transfer back to Amman's Queen Alia International Airport to connect with homeward flights. Departure from Amman. LAND ONLY customers make their own way directly to the airport by taxi directly from the Dead Sea (your Tour Leader will assist). NOTE that many international flights from Amman depart late at night. Most passengers enjoy the extra "downtime" (ie all day today) at the Dead Sea; however, some prefer to depart earlier (ie last night). You might consider this situation and your preferences before finalizing your air. RHLAH S'IDAH Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner are included daily. All transport, accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for drivers, restaurant staff, porters, local guides. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving/departing on tour dates and for any early arriving/late departing travellers who book both their air and extra nights through us.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, most lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international (if applicable) and domestic air taxes, visa fees, and any excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on shopping, not included meals, visas, locally-paid departure taxes.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered for much of the year, except the hotter summer months May-September. Outside of this time frame, we are able to achieve our busy program, which involves a lot of time outdoors, with greater comfort and safety. That said, once can still expect heat in some locales, especially in Upper Egypt, and especially during "shoulder" times, ie March/April & early October. At these times, your Tour Leader will do his/her best to structure our activities to take advantage of the more comfortable times of day to head out, which could mean some early starts and possibly a block of leisure time midday. The coolest and most comfortable window is November-February, when Upper Egypt is comfortable and Cairo is cool-chilly. Jordan, however, can be downright chilly November-February, with crisp mornings that warm up as the day progresses.

Transport and Travel Conditions EGYPT: Over two weeks we travel by bus, felucca sailboat, horse carriage, plane, donkey cart, and camel. Distances covered are not great and roads are good. The tour is not strenuous though it is busy; you must be steady on your feet and be able to endure some heat and some extensive archaeological sites. We have some full days, which can also involve some early starts as dictated by internal flights as well as some excursions, ie Alexandria & Abu Simbel, for which early departures are necessitated by distance and traffic. We also like to get to Abu Simbel in time for sunrise and before large crowds arrive. JORDAN: Ground transport provided by private air-conditioned motor coach, 12-36 seats depending on ultimate group size. The tour is not strenuous though it is busy; you must be steady on your feet and be able to endure some heat and long travel days. Our rating "Level 2" on this tour refers to its ambitious nature, full days, and plenty of time spent on your feet. Some days involve some early starts as dictated by internal flights as well as some excursions, ie Alexandria & Abu Simbel, for which early departures are necessitated by distance and traffic. We also like to get to Abu Simbel in time for sunrise and before large crowds arrive. Many sites visited are LARGE; surfaces are uneven and sloped, and stairs will factor into our visits. Heat can also be a factor in some locations which can, over time, cause fatigue. This is not an 'easy' tour; if you are unsteady or slow on your feet, rely heavily on a cane or any other mobility aid, or tire easily, we regret that this tour would not be suitable. Though baggage handling is available throughout, you must still be able to fully manage yourself and your things, especially at airports. IF YOU'RE WONDERING why we don't offer a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor, we find that by travelling between these two points overland we are able to include more sites in addition to Kom Ombo and Edfu, where we enjoy private sightseeing instead of having our group combined with other groups on the cruise program. Our independence also allows us to avoid peak periods and crowds at the times that cruise ships generally dock. We know that the notion of a Nile cruise has a special romantic appeal, but we (including our Tour Leaders) have always preferred this alternative. The ships spend most of their time tied up at the docks in Luxor and Aswan and the time actually sailing is rather limited and may occur at night due to the limitations of the transit lock system, which often gets backed up. As cruise programs tend to feature quite a lot of "down time," this option was rarely well-received by past travellers back in the day when we included it. We hope this clarifies!

Egypt and Jordan Tours – Come Explore the Majestic Wonders of the Ancient World

Egypt and Jordan Tours

Does the thought of seeing the 7 Wonders of the Ancient  World enthrall you? Our epic Egypt and Jordan travel packages provide you with the perfect chance to explore the major ancient highlights of North Africa and the Middle East.

While the original 7 Ancient Wonders of the World that were named by Herodotus back in the 5th century, all apart from one have largely been destroyed by various causes. One, however, still stands and is largely still intact: the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most iconic and most well-known structure of ancient Egypt, standing tall over the desert for thousands of years. The pyramid was built by Pharaoh Khufu in around 2580 BC and is estimated to have taken 20 years to build with around 2.3 million stone blocks. It stands 146 meters (481 ft) tall and its base covers an area of 5.3 acres (21,600 square meters). It consists of three chambers: the King’s Chamber, Queen’s Chamber and Grand Gallery.

Visitors can actually go inside all three of the pyramids at Giza, but in order to enter the pyramids, you need to purchase separate entrance tickets for each of the pyramids you want to enter. If you are considering booking one of our Egypt and Jordan tours and you want to enter one or more of the Pyramids of Giza, you can let us know at the time when you make your booking and we will include it in the price of your tour package.

Petra in Jordan, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, has also been named as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and for good reason. It is, in our opinion, one of the world’s most breathtaking historical sites.

The Rose City of Petra

Petra, also known as the Rose City of Petra and the Lost City of Petra, is a historical archaeological site in Jordan that was carved out of sandstone cliffs. The city dates back to the 6th century BC and was once an important trading post on trade routes from Arabia to Syria. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an immensely popular attraction for tourists who visit Jordan.

The most iconic site in Petra is Al Khazneh, or “The Treasury” – a façade carved directly into the rock face that is 40 meters (130ft) high. Other notable sites include several tombs cut into the rocks,

At Egypt Tours Plus, our epic Egypt and Jordan tours provide you with the perfect opportunity to see the legendary Pyramids of Giza, the Lost City of Petra, as well as so many other breathtaking attractions along the way.

Take some time to relax and get settled before joining fellow travelers at a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Pyramids of Giza

tours of jordan and egypt

Our destination today: the wondrous Pyramids of Giza. Built during the Third and Fourth Dynasties, these monuments stand as testimony to the skill and strength of their builders. We’ll get up close to study the Great Pyramid, as well as see the Pyramids of Khefren and Mycerinus in the distance. Nearby, we’ll gaze at the mythical Sphinx of Giza, which famously combines a reclining lion with the head of an Egyptian king. After these amazing sights, we’ll lunch like the Egyptians do at a local Cairo restaurant.

Day 3: Cairo – Aswan

tours of jordan and egypt

Today you’ll be picked up at your hotel and we’ll fly from Cairo to Aswan. Upon arrival you can either hop on another short flight for an optional tour to the Abu Simbel Temples or head to the hotel and start exploring Aswan at your leisure. Later we will all join together to sail on the Nile by a motorboat to the Nubian Village that is located on the West Bank of the River Nile. This fantastic tour to the Nubian Village lets you meet a Nubian family, have a drink in their home, while learning about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions.

Day 4: Aswan – Nile Cruise

tours of jordan and egypt

In the morning, visit a modern-day architectural wonder, the Aswan High Dam, as well as Philae’s Temple of Isis, which was nearly lost to rising water in the 1960s until the dam was built. Afterwards, you’ll board your Nile cruise ship to depart on a three-night journey from Upper to Lower Egypt.

Day 5: Nile Cruise – Kom Ombo – Edfu – Luxor

tours of jordan and egypt

We’ll cruise to Kom Ombo to visit an unusual double temple, built in the Ptolemaic period and dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-head god Horus. After exploring Kom Ombo, we’ll sail on to Edfu, an Egyptian city on the west bank of the Nile River. Our day continues with a tour of the immense, well-preserved Temple of Edfu, built between 237 and 57 B.C. and also dedicated to Horus. Legend says that this was the site where Horus avenged his father’s murder by his uncle, the god Seth. Back on board our ship, we’ll sail past Esna to Luxor.

Day 6: Nile Cruise – Luxor

tours of jordan and egypt

Often considered the most extraordinary open-air museum in the world, Luxor boasts an imposing array of ruins and monuments. The modern name for Thebes (the “city of palaces”), Luxor is also the inspiration for the word luxury, and we’ll see quite a bit of architectural extravagance today. The graceful Temple of Luxor was built over several centuries by Amenhopis III, Tutankhamun, Ramses II and Alexander the Great and features an avenue of sphinxes. We’ll also tour the ancient temple complex of Karnak. The immense wealth of Thebes was spent embellishing and building temples in honor of Amun-Ra, the most important and powerful of ancient Egyptian gods. The balance of the day is at your leisure.

Day 7: Luxor

tours of jordan and egypt

After breakfast, we’ll say farewell to our ship and continue our exploration of Luxor and the Nile’s west bank. We’ll visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s second confirmed female Pharaoh and regarded as one of its most successful rulers, as well as royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The afternoon is free to relax or investigate exhibits at the Luxor Museum.

Day 8: Luxor

tours of jordan and egypt

Enjoy this free day at leisure in Luxor to explore further or relax by the pool.

Day 9: Luxor – Cairo

tours of jordan and egypt

A morning flight takes us back to Cairo and our last hotel. Today, we’ll explore the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which houses the world’s largest collection of artifacts from the era of the pharaohs, including some belonging to King Tut. Afterward, we’ll wander through the bustling, colorful Khan El Khalili Bazaar. We’ll end the day by sharing memories of our amazing travels through Egypt at dinner before we leave for Jordan tomorrow.

Day 10: Cairo – Madaba – Petra

tours of jordan and egypt

This morning, we'll depart Egypt by plane for Jordan. After we arrive in Jordan, we'll visit Madaba, "the City of Mosaics", where we'll see the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, known for housing the Madaba Map. This map is a floor mosaic depicting Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Afterward, we'll travel ten minutes west to Mount Nebo—the presumed site of Moses' death and burial place. After our visit, we'll continue to Petra where we'll check in at our hotel and enjoy dinner.

Day 11: Petra

Petra

Prepare for an extraordinary day! After breakfast today, we'll drive to Petra where we'll take a tour of the breathtaking "rose-red" city (by horseback and foot), which begins at the "Siq", a winding canyon road. At the end of the passage, we'll see Petra's most beautiful monument—the Treasury—carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain. Beyond the Treasury, we'll discover soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a theatre, burial chambers, and water channels. Next, we'll drive to Little Petra, the suburb of Petra in ancient time. Here, we'll see more awe-inspiring ruins on our short walk.

Note: This day may be more taxing as this is a full day of walking on uneven surfaces.

Day 12: Petra – Dead Sea

tours of jordan and egypt

Today we'll get a glimpse into the life of a Jordanian farmer and her family. We'll learn how to bake whole wheat Saj bread, pick free-range eggs, feed a baby goat, and more before we sample fresh food from the farm under a 400-year-old oak tree. Next, we'll visit the site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, believed to be the Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ. Located on the east bank of the Jordan River in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, it is being systematically surveyed, excavated, and restored to receive pilgrims and visitors. The Bethany area sites form part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. After our visit, we'll continue to our hotel on the Dead Sea.

Day 13: Dead Sea

tours of jordan and egypt

After breakfast at our hotel, we can enjoy a relaxing day at the Dead Sea, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. At your leisure, float in the clear blue, mineral-rich water, soak up some sun, and even try the invigorating full-body mud mask that cleanses the skin. We may also consider an optional tour of Amman, the capital of Jordan (see optional tours for more details).

Day 14: Dead Sea – Cairo

tours of jordan and egypt

After breakfast, we'll leave Jordan behind as we fly back to Cairo. This evening, we'll share a farewell dinner with our fellow travelers.

Our tour comes to an end after breakfast today. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive program will transfer to the airport for our return flight to the U.S. early this morning (a boxed breakfast will be provided for our early morning flight. Outstanding Service

The service I have received from Mr Abdulla has been outstanding. He has tailored our trip to Egypt to suit us and nothing has been to much for him. His prompt replies and reassurance makes the whole booking experience a pleasure.

We can’t wait for our trip and the excitment is solely down to the immaculate customer service so far.

Tiamaria, UK

Great company

I have been working with this tour company and Khalid has been most helpful. During this Covid-19 era and planning a trip for November (2020) is contingent on how vaccines and restrictions. I like the flexibility working with this company. I have plenty of questions and Khaled is always willing to answer the questions to the best of his ability. I greatly appreciate in his prompt response. What is most important to me, was if he didn’t have the answer, 1) would be honest about not knowing and 2) would find an answer. I can’t say enough on this journey with this tour group.

The many benefits of private Egypt and Jordan Tours

It is not just about comfort and safety.

Everything is possible

With a private guided Egypt and Jordan tour, nearly everything is possible.

Imagine yourself at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, assisted by a qualified expert tour guide who carefully answers questions and takes the time to explain Egypt’s long and colorful past.

Imagine yourself traveling back in time as you stroll along a deep and narrow rock gorge that was transformed into a magnificent rock-cut city; an entire ancient city carved out of the canyon’s steep sandstone cliffs by a tribe of nomadic Nabatean Arabs during the 6th-century BC.

Finally, picture yourself and your dearest friends mounting the highest steps of one of the legendary Giza pyramids to enjoy the splendid scenery spread out around you. Or imagine stepping into the ancient tomb of one of the most famous Egyptian pharaohs, King Tutankhamen.

What would an exciting Egypt and Jordan tour adventure look like for you?

To go where you have always wanted

Monuments like the Giza Pyramids, the Abu Simbel Temples, and Valley of Kings are breathtaking sites which every visitor to Egypt should see. The same applies to the magnificent rock-cut Rose Red City of Petra when visiting Jordan.

Most Egypt and Jordan tours include visits to all these sites and more. However, with private Egypt and Jordan tours you can see and do so much more.

Go diving in the Red Sea; float on the Dead Sea; go sailing down the majestic Nile River – anything and everything is possible!

The many benefits of a private tour

The undeniable benefit of a private Egypt and Jordan tour is the level of service provided.

Yes, but as in all countries, taking a few basic safety precautions is recommended. For example, avoid dark and deserted areas if you are traveling alone, and especially if you are a woman.

What Do Tourists Wear in Egypt and Jordan?

Tourists are free to wear whatever they want in both countries, although women are required to cover their hair and shoulders if or when entering a mosque.

Occupied since the Bronze Age, it’s surrounded by a 1700m-long wall, which was rebuilt many times during the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as the Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad periods. There’s plenty to see, but the Citadel’s most striking sights are the Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace. Roman Theater: This magnificently restored theatre is the most obvious and impressive remnant of Roman Philadelphia, and is the highlight of Amman for most foreign visitors. Head North to visit Jerash the Greco-Roman city, Jordan’s largest and most interesting Roman site, and a major tourist drawcard. Its imposing ceremonial gates, colonnaded avenues, temples and theatres all speak to the time when this was an important imperial centre. Proceed to visit Ajloun Castle: This historic castle was built atop Mt ‘Auf (1250m) between 1184 and 1188 by one of Saladin’s generals, ‘Izz ad-Din Usama bin Munqidh (who was also Saladin’s nephew). The castle commands views of the Jordan Valley and three wadis leading into it, making it an important strategic link in the defensive chain against the Crusaders and a counterpoint to the rusader Belvoir Fort on the Sea of Galilee in present-day Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Breakfast at the hotel, then drive to the ancient city of Amman to visit Amman Citadel Top choice ruins in Amman the area known as the Citadel sits on the highest hill in Amman, Jebel Al Qala’a (about 850m above sea level), and is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon. Back to your hotel in the evening.

Day 13: Amman — Madaba — Mount Nebo — Petra

Breakfast at the hotel then drive to visit Madaba; The amiable market town of Madaba is best known for a collection of Byzantine-era mosaics. The most famous of these is the map on the floor of St George’s Church, but there are many others in different parts of the town, several of them even more complete and vibrantly colorful. then drive to visit Mount Nebo; where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, a land he was himself forbidden to enter. It’s believed that he died aged 120 and was later buried in the area, although the exact location of the burial site is the subject of conjecture. After the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel in Petra for check-in.

  • Overnight in Petra
  • Accommodation: Petra Moon Hotel OR Sella Hotel OR Petra Boutique Hotel or similar (Standard quality)

Day 14: Petra Tour

Breakfast at the hotel, head to the site to visit Petra: Top choice archaeological site in Petra The spectacular sandstone city of Petra was built in the 3rd century BC by the Nabataeans, who carved palaces, temples, tombs, storerooms and stables from the soft stone cliffs. Today it is a World Heritage Site that needs little introduction; suffice to say, no visit to Jordan is complete without exploring the remarkable Ancient City. The Ancient City is approached through the 1.2km-long, high-walled Siq – a crack in the rock, torn apart by tectonic forces. Just as you start to think there’s no end to the Siq, you catch breathtaking glimpses ahead of the most impressive of Petra’s sights, the Treasury, known locally as Al Khazneh. Carved out of iron-laden sandstone to serve as a tomb, the Treasury gets its name from the misguided local belief that an Egyptian pharaoh hid his treasure in the top urn. The Greek-style pillars, alcoves, and plinths are truly masterpieces of masonry work. After the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Petra.

Day 15: Petra — Wadi Rum “02 hours Jeep Tour”

Breakfast at the Hotel then transfer to Wadi Rum which is everything you’d expect of a quintessential dessert: it is extreme in the summer heat and winter cold; it is violent and moody as the sun slices through chiselled siqs (canyons) at dawn or melts the division between rock and sand at dusk; it is exacting on the Bedouin who live in it and vengeful on those who ignore its dangers. For most visitors, on half-or full-day trips from Aqaba or Petra, Wadi Rum offers one of the easiest and safest glimpses of the desert in the region. It is an unforgettable way of stripping the soul back to basics. Head to your camp at Wadi Rum for dinner and overnight.

  • Overnight in Wadi Rum
  • Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Sun City Camp in Wadi Rum or similar (Standard quality)

Day 16: Wadi Rum — Dead Sea

Breakfast at the hotel, drive to Dead Sea: At 431m below sea level – the lowest point on earth – the Dead Sea is a body of intense blue water, polished smooth like oiled skin on a windless day in winter and ruffled into whitecaps by the summer winds.

  • Overnight in Dead Sea
  • Accommodation: Dead Sea Spa Hotel OR Ramada Resort OR Holiday Inn Resort Dead Sea or similar (Standard quality)

Day 17: Dead Sea — Departure Queen Alia Airport

‘We saw an immediate drop’: Jordan’s tourism industry is suffering amid the Israel-Hamas war

Jordan’s economy relies heavily on tourism but since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October and the ongoing war in Gaza, tourism in the country has slowed down. This is also the case in other countries in the region, including Israel itself, Lebanon and Egypt.

  • By Shirin Jaafari

A general view of the ancient city of Jerash, north of the capital Amman, Jordan, Dec. 6, 2023. Jerash is one of the most popular attractions in Jordan behind Petra. It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside of Italy, and its history goes back more than 6,500 years.

The ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan, represent one of the best-preserved Roman cities.

Here, gladiators once competed in chariot-racing contests as spectators watched from the stone seats.

Dhirar Atmeh grew up in the area.

“When I used to come, and you know, see people come in as tourists, I said ‘this is my thing. This is where I should go,’” he said.

ruins

Atmeh has been working as a tour guide in Jordan for the past two decades. He said that nothing brings him more joy than telling foreign visitors about the long history and the splendor of this site.

But these are tough times for Atmeh and the thousands of others who work in the tourism industry in Jordan and neighboring countries. The war in Gaza has brought his business to a near standstill, he said: “I lost 80% of my job. I mean 80% of my reservations were canceled.”

Tours from the US, Europe and Australia were canceled one after another. People stopped coming.

ruins

Atmeh has five kids and he said he’s struggling to provide for them. For him, what’s happening now brings back difficult memories of the early days of the pandemic, when he lost most of his assets.

“I had a car. I had to sell it. I had a house, I sold it. Many things … I had a piece of land also I sold. So, it wasn’t easy.”

Atmeh said that he’s worried about the weeks and months ahead, as there seems to be no end to the fighting.

Already, Jordan’s unemployment rate, as of last year, was about 23%, according to the World Bank.

man near ruins

If tourists don’t come back, he said, it’s not like he can just find another job.

Tours here are typically part of a package that includes Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Conflict in one of them means that people cancel their whole trip.

Ben Julius is the founder of Tourist Israel, one of the largest tour agencies in Israel.

“From the beginning of the war, we saw an immediate drop, close to zero, from what was expected to be one of the best and busiest periods ever.”

In Israel, flights have been canceled, tourist sites have been closed and hotels have been empty .

ruins

“It’s been very difficult for us. Around 70% of our team — we immediately had to send to furlough again. Many of them only came back into the tourism industry and back into the company in the last year because of the recovery from COVID.”

Julius operates tours in Egypt as well, and he said that they’ve had many cancellations there, too.

In Lebanon, the Christmas season is also shaping up to be a loss this year .

tourists in the ruins

Juliuis is seeing signs of improvement for next year. He said that people are booking their trips in advance.

“That’s giving us a little bit of hope going into next year.”

tourists

Meanwhile, back in Jordan, the minister of tourism, Makram Mustafa Queisi, predicts an even bigger drop in the number of tourists in the coming months if the war doesn’t stop.

“The problem is that people in the West and elsewhere, actually, when they look at the map, they don’t differentiate between Jordan and the neighboring countries. People don’t understand that we are not in a war zone.”

people at a stand

He said he wants to change that perception and help people understand that Jordan is a safe place to visit. When tourists don’t come, he said, that affects a wide swath of the economy.

“We talk about the bus drivers for example, we speak about restaurants, we speak about hotels, we speak about the tour operators, and the people who work with the tour operators.”

For tourism to survive, he said, this region needs stability and security.

man in office

“This aggression has to stop because at the end of the day there’s no winner.”

In the meantime, Jordan is using this unexpected break in tourism to renovate some of its historical sites.

What people love about egypt, jordan and israel tours.

My wife and I went on a 17-day tour of Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. The tour was well orchestrated. All the details of getting into and out of countries were handled professionally and with little cause of concern to us. Hand-offs between countries went well. We were guided by knowledgable people who had our best interests at heart (with possibly one exception). The only real complaint I have is that TourRadar turned out to be more of a facilitator than a tour agency with its own guides. I was confused when we got to Israel and found that neither TourRadar nor Click Tours (which answered my online questions) was the agency actually leading the tours. Not knowing that we would be connecting with Consolidated Tour Operators (CTO) led to some initial confusion in the Tel Aviv airport. Expecting to be linked up with Click Tours and knowing nothing about CTO, we missed connecting with the airport facilitator in Tel Aviv for nearly an hour while each of tried to find the other. If I had been told to look for a CTO representative, our stressful introduction to the tour would have gone much more smoothly. In Israel and Jordan, CTO handled our tour. In Egypt, the agency was Sylvia. I had expected to be part of a group that held together for the entire 17 days, but that wasn't the case. Groups formed and disbanded based on what individuals planned to visit. In Israel there were 11 of us, and we bonded quickly. In Jordan I was surprised that our group dwindled to five. And in Egypt there was only my wife and me. That left us vulnerable in Egypt to the care of our guide, who, because there was just the two of us, managed to fleece us of $150. I would never have signed up with TourRadar if I had understood that my wife and I would be left alone at one point without the safety of a group and unprepared to deal with a guide we didn't fully trust.
What a great trip every thing went brilliant, thank you
