travel immunizations

If you plan on travelling, it is important to get immunized before you go.

Protect against diseases while travelling.

If you plan on travelling, it is important to get the recommended or required immunizations before you go. Recommendations and requirements are based on what immunizations you have had in the past, your age, where you are going, length of time you will be there, and what activities you will be doing. Some countries require you to have certain immunizations before you enter the country.

See list of recommended and required immunizations by country .

No matter where you travel, it is important to make sure your routine immunizations are up-to-date .

Where can I get my travel immunizations?

Immunizations for travel can be given at a travel clinic , doctor's office or pharmacy. Discuss your travel plans with your health care provider at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel because most vaccines take several weeks to become fully effective and others may need more than one dose.

If you are not up-to-date with your routine immunizations, make an appointment with your doctor, pharmacist (for those 5 years and older) or Public Health. Vaccines that are part of B.C.’s routine immunization schedule are provided for free.

How much do travel immunizations cost?

There is a cost for travel immunizations that are not part of B.C.’s routine immunization schedule .

Costs can vary for each immunization and can be discussed with your health professional during your travel consultation.

What if I get sick while travelling?

If you get sick while travelling, see how you can get help . If you continue to feel sick or get sick after returning to Canada, learn about what you can do and talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Find a travel health clinic

It is recommended that you contact a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic, preferably six weeks before you travel.

Travel health services are available in most communities or through your family doctor. One way to find a health care site that provides travel health services is through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s list of designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres.
