Define your budget.

There are plenty of great watch models on both ends of the price spectrum. Don’t feel pressured to spend thousands of dollars on a luxury brand if you can’t afford it, but also, if you’re able to invest in a premium piece, it will likely last you for years to come with proper care and maintenance. As a general rule of thumb, look for material selection and features over flashy logos to find the true value of any watch.

Consider how you plan to use it

The setting you’re in will determine what type of watch you should get. If you’re traveling for work and won’t have time to exercise, it’s better to opt for fine metals and premium leather. But, if you need features like GPS tracking for long runs in foreign settings, make sure you have a quality sports watch. It’s also never a bad idea to bring multiple types of watches for whatever your travels may bring.

It totally depends on the material, brand, and care. More technologically advanced watches like running or smart watches will likely only last a few years as the software becomes outdated. But, luxury mechanical watches (think Rolex, Zodiac, etc.) should last a lifetime and should simply need to be serviced every three to five years.

A watch should be firm, but not restrictive, on your wrist. The case should sit entirely on top of the wrist, not extending over the sides, and you should be able to slide a finger or two under the band, such that it’s not buckled too tight. Nothing looks worse than an overly bulky — or too-small — watch, so be sure to measure your wrist for the right case size.

If nothing else, the last year or so has made foreign travel an adventure again, at least for those who enjoy navigating their way through vaccination regimes and test requirements. It feels long ago when instead the burning question was whether it’s cocktail hour at the destination yet.

For the well-prepared traveler, the answer is on your wrist, as one of the few really useful complications watchmakers offer is the ability to show two or more time zones at a glance. Simply put, a “complication” in watch parlance is any function on a timepiece other than showing the time, such as a stopwatch or moon-phase display. Of course, you can do it in your head or use a world-time app on your phone, but a GMT or worldtimer saves you the bother and looks considerably more stylish. 

However, as easy as it is for you to decipher, showing multiple time zones is a significant challenge for both the watchmakers and the designer, as there’s always a tradeoff between simplicity and utility. How do you want the second time zone to be set? Should it link to the date? Do the time zones need to be named? How do you make sure the “travel” time is sufficiently distinct from the “home” time? What about places with just 30-minute differences? 

Here is our edit of some of the best mechanical worldtimers you can get right now, from entry level to high-end. All should serve you well, wherever your travels—once they begin again in earnest—may take you.

The standard approach to a GMT watch is exemplified by the Explorer II from Rolex, which has a second hour in bright orange that runs on a 24-hour cycle: set this 24-hour hand for your second time zone, then read the hour off the bezel scale, and minutes as normal. 

The design is built entirely around the presence of the extra hand and the bezel, with the contrast between hour and GMT hands being a feature rather than a hindrance (whether that’s a good thing is a straightforward matter of taste).

It’s simple, effective, and, as it’s a Rolex, bomb-proof. And even if you’re not traveling across time zones, Rolex points out that it might be useful for distinguishing day from night, should you emerge from a storm in an Arctic high summer.

This new version retains the signature 42mm sizing (want a larger case? Look to the brand's rugged 43mm Sea-Dweller and 44mm Deepsea). Inside is the in-house caliber 3285 power plant, new in the Explorer II, and the same currently found in the GMT-Master II. 

The really good news is this 3285 automatic movement—powered by the natural movement of the body as you wear it—packs in the best that Rolex currently offers: Chronergy escapement, 70 hours of power reserve, blue Parachrom balance spring and Paraflex shock absorbers. What does all this mean? A much more accurate, efficient, and robust piece that keeps running much longer after you've stopped wearing it.

The same solution seen in the Rolex is behind Bell & Ross’s BR03-93 GMT, but the design makes the GMT more subservient to the watch design, obviously derived from the modular format of cockpit instruments, an aviation-inspired look that Bell & Ross has come to dominate over its 30-year history. 

One difference here is that the bezel can be turned, giving the watch more flexibility in terms of the extra time zone (the bezel is rotated however many hours difference between home time and the third zone to see the time in that destination without having to set the watch). Some will welcome that, others will see it as a complication too far, but it’s a smart watch that delivers a design presence that Rolex doesn’t look for. Speaking of which, the popular colorways of red and black—the "Coke" look as opposed to the red and blue "Pepsi" style—will justifiably draw attention.

The sturdy 42mm watch also has 100-meter water resistance, a 42-hour power reserve, curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a small, subtle rounded date window towards the 4:30 position. Yes, you get a black calfskin leather strap, but we prefer this ultra-resilient synthetic fabric option.

Breitling’s Chronomat UTC offers a brutally effective, if not especially subtle, solution to the demand for worldtimer watches: fit a completely separate mini, quartz-powered watch into the strap . 

It helps that the Chronomat is a hefty piece of kit to begin with—44mm by 14.45mm, so the extra bulk shouldn’t be an issue. The mechanical movement has 70 hours of power reserve, which is the length of time it continues to tick once you have removed the Chronomat from your wrist. It's also water-resistant up to 200 meters.

The “UTC" name references Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC , the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time and is not adjusted for daylight saving, making it effectively a successor to Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, which is where worldtimers derive their alternative moniker from.

The Chronomat was inspired by the Frecce Tricolori watch that Breitling created for the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic fleet back in 1983, and is very much an all-purpose sports watch, which explains why the second time zone function was incorporated into the strap and not the watch itself.

There’s an alternative solution that can be seen in Chopard’s latest travel watch, the L.U.C Time Traveler One Black, which is to show time everywhere in the world at once, via an arrangement of counter-rotating discs on the edge of the dial. 

Amazingly, it’s almost suspiciously easy to read—the number below the city is the time there—but it needs a sensitive designer to manage the hierarchy of information delivered. Going monotone, as Chopard’s watch shows, is a beautifully effective way of doing just that. 

It's actually based on the Time Traveler One launched back in 2016, but now with an added dose of modernity thanks to that monochrome color palette that extends to the 42mm ceramised titanium case (which has a hardness of 700 Vickers when 316L stainless steel has a hardness of 150 to 200 Vickers). On closer inspection, it's not black but myriad subtle shades of gray. This is the secret to the watch's legibility. 

One the outside of the dial is a city disc, marked with 24 locations around the globe. The crown at 4 o’clock lets the user rotate this city disc. When the chosen city for the local time is set at the 12 o’clock position, you can determine the prevailing hour in all of those 24 locations simultaneously.

It is available in black, white, green or blue polished lacquer dials, boasts an anti-shock system and is compatible with a range quick-change straps that includes this options made from recycled ocean plastic.

In the past, a criticism levied at Christopher Ward has been a tendency to add unnecessary information and clutter to its dials, as it did with its 2014 C900 Worldtimer, but here there are no such issues. It's smart and simple.

When it comes to categorizing watches, we tend to organize them by the strict purposes their styles were originally meant for. That translates into a world of dive watches, pilot watches, racing watches, formal watches, business watches, etc… A category that only loosely exists in the traditional sense but that is nevertheless extremely important is “travel watches.” What is a travel watch? Well, traditionally, a pocket watch was the original travel watch because it was designed to be portable. More recently, the travel watch has been a more ambiguous category of watches that serve travelers with a range of needs both functional and fashionable.

The question we seek to answer in this article is “what are the elements of a good watch to wear while traveling?” Of course, the answer depends on where you are going, but you’ll see a lot of commonalities between these watches despite there being many different types of timepieces that would nevertheless be good to travel with.

You’ll also find a lot of watches that advertise themselves as being “ideal for traveling” that we don’t include here. Why not include every potential type of travel watch in this list? When it comes down to it, we are rather demanding of what our travel watches should do and how various things like the fragility (or complexity) of a movement balances out a watch’s overall design and utility. That means some timepieces meant for travel might simply be too delicate and/or difficult to use to be truly relied on.

I’d also like to debunk the myth that all traveler’s watches need to have complications in addition to the time. With today’s technology at our fingertips, there is little reason to absolutely rely on your wrist watch to know the time in many different time zones. It isn’t impossible, but it sure is tough to find a watch that satisfies each of these needs. Few can, but it is important to consider everything you might require of a timepiece while you are away from home base.

In reality, there is no absolute top 10 list of travel watches, but rather, we are including a cross-section of timepieces that will serve a lot of important needs while you are traveling and that you’ll find handy in a range of situations. Watches similar in style or design to these “archetype choices” will also likely serve you well.

Before we get to the watches, I want to talk a bit about useful features and complications that should appeal to travelers. No single watch has everything, but many watches combine a lot of important elements that you (within the subjective reality of your needs) should be looking for.

The most important thing to ask yourself is what the most demanding situation will be that you’d like to wear your watch during. Maybe the flight and airport journey is the most demanding activity your travel watch will be subjected to, or perhaps, you plan on going hiking, diving, or just want to exercise with your watch. Most people who do more simple things like working out at a gym or running can get away with simply taking their watch off, but if you are planning a trip out into the wilderness, you might decide that wearing your timepiece is enjoyable, useful, and perhaps, safe.

Thus, you’ll need at least one watch suitable for wear during these activities. Of course, not all trips involve leisure time like this, but then again, people travel for different reasons. If you are a serious outdoors person, then you probably aren’t going to assume that your sporty beater watch will be the same timepiece to rely on when in a meeting with business colleagues. So the hikers, divers, and all-around adventurers are better off with a dedicated activity watch, and one to wear when you get “cleaned up.”

Also, a few thoughts on safety. Depending on where you travel, having an expensive watch might be a liability (or an asset). Perhaps, the number one biggest concern most travelers with nice watches have is “I don’t want to be a target for crime.” That’s true; in certain parts of the world you don’t really want to be traveling with an item that makes you any more susceptible to being discreetly robbed or even violently mugged. If you are traveling to a more dangerous part of the world, please consider how showy your timepiece is and how your overall look may communicate your likelihood to be wearing expensive things.

At the same time, having an expensive watch in certain parts of the world can be an asset in emergency situations. A great brand to mention now is Rolex. People have said in the past that if you have a half-way decent Rolex watch pretty much anywhere in the world, you should be able to relatively readily “exchange it” for a trip home in the event you are in an emergency situation. This, of course, isn’t a universal rule, and doesn’t work with all watches in all places. Nevertheless, if you have a quality watch from a popular brand such as Rolex (and especially Rolex), there is a high likelihood that people even in remote places will recognize its value and either give you cash or services in exchange for it if you find yourself in a pickle. Whether those same people just steal the watch from you without offering fair value is really going to depend on how well the individual person gauges the situation.

In order to sum up a list of the top 10 watches for traveling, I’ve decided to list and explain a watch style archetype and then mention a specific brand and model that fits in really well to that archetype. These examples are by no means the only good travel watches out there, but it was important for me to at least generally explain the types of watches that we feel make for the best travel timepieces.

The Classic Sporty GMT: Rolex GMT-Master II

While many timepieces (including other watches in this list) fall into this category, the Rolex GMT-Master II (review here) is probably the gold standard in luxury GMT sport watches. Good looking, durable, and with a great history, few watches really capture the sheer versatility and functionality of this classic sports watch, as well as the depth of its appeal.

On a basic level, the GMT second time zone hand offers the time elsewhere in a 24-hour format. That means you have the local time and a “reference time” to know (for example) what time it is back home. GMT sport watches like the Rolex GMT-Master II are also fashionably versatile. Sure, it looks like a slightly different version of the Submariner dive watch, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. From a fashion perspective, there is little you can’t wear this watch with, and it should stand up to activity and abuse, as well as cleaning up nicely for dressier occasions. While it can’t do everything, you will be surprised at how much use you can get out of just one watch while traveling with a Rolex GMT-Master II or something similar to it.

Modern Analog Satellite Watch: Seiko Astron Chronograph

How modern satellite-controlled electronic watches like the Seiko Astron will fare during the age of the smartwatch is unclear – but right now, there is nothing in the smartwatch camp that even comes close to the universal appeal (and application) for the Seiko Astron Chronograph (hands-on here) . Perhaps the most important things to point out are, first, that the battery inside the Astron is charged by light, so you don’t really need to worry about a battery dying; and second, that the watch itself connects to satellites to update the current time and time zone on your watch automatically. Thus, you don’t need to worry about a dead battery in most instances, and you also don’t need to rely on a host device.

Seiko’s Astron Chronograph adds a chronograph complication which makes it very handy to time travel legs such as flights to predict travel times. Chronographs are actually really useful when traveling, so it isn’t a bad idea to look for travel watches that do have chronograph complications. Designed to have some dressy appeal, the Astron Chronograph doesn’t look like your typical nerdy gadget watch – which makes it even more attractive as a sole travel watch. Better yet, its real value of knowing the time anywhere via direct connection to GPS signals means it will shine the most when you are the furthest from civilization.

Business World Time Chronograph: Girard-Perregaux ww.tc Chronograph

While “world time” watches are designed for traveling, there aren’t too many of those types of watches on this list. That is because I am going to lump them all in this category since, in essence, they operate the same way using a disc such as this or various windows that allow you to see the time in multiple time zones. Let me first say that this complication is in fact very useful and available on a host of watches. I actually like this complication mixed with a chronograph so that you can get the benefit from a world timer with a touch of extra added utility.

One of the more popular chronograph world time watches is the Girard-Perregaux ww.tc (hands-on here) which has been offered in a range of styles over the last several years. Using an in-house made movement focusing on dress elegance and contemporary style, these make great solo travel watches for those who nevertheless like to keep track of the time in various cities. In other words, as a travel watch, a timepiece such as a world time chronograph has the most relevant complications specifically designed for travel and will prove useful on the wrists of many travelers.

All-Purpose Professional’s Watch: Rolex Day-Date 40

If all you really want is a prestigious business/professional watch that doesn’t need specific travel functions, then a great place to begin is the Rolex Day-Date 40 (hands-on here) . On the negative side, this isn’t the most original choice in the world, and it will make you a target for crime in the wrong parts of the world. On the plus side, a watch like the Rolex “President” is universally known as a sign of success and in emergency situations can be traded for a lot of value.

While there is certainly a more “mature” slant to the design and fashionable appeal of the Rolex Day-Date 40, it has been known to work with anything from a suit to most any business to classy casual attire. Use your phone and gadgets for all the more complicated information, and a Rolex Day-Date 40 or other all-purpose professionals’ watch as a solid choice for a sole travel watch if most of your travels takes you on paved roads and into climate controlled rooms.

Luxury Dive Watch On Rubber Strap: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT

You might dismiss a luxury dive watch on a rubber or NATO-style strap as too casual or not totally appropriate for all travel situations. You’d be right. If you are traveling and expect to be in a suit most of the time, your sports watch on a colorful strap might not be a good idea. If, however, you are going on vacation or to a more tropical environment, this can be an excellent choice. Rubber straps really shine in tropical environments or any place where it is hot and you are likely to sweat. Maybe you’ll also end up taking this watch into the water or off the beaten path – which is something it is certainly designed for.

There is, honestly, a huge assortment of dive watches on rubber straps with good choices starting from just a few hundred dollars. Since we are talking about “ideal” choices, we might as also go with a luxury watch. The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is at heart a solid dive watch with a sleek design and a range of versions. Deceptively Inexpensive Dress Watch: Orient Bambino

It would be remiss of us to simply suggest luxury timepieces for travel, especially for use with formal attire. It is true that in many places in the world having a nice timepiece is a prerequisite to having a serious business conversation. If you are in one of those situations, you might not want to necessarily go down this route. If, however, you are concerned about losing or damaging your watch during travel or simply don’t want to worry about having something too expensive, then pick up something decent and discount made by the Japanese.

As there is a whole world of nicely-priced Seiko and Citizen sport watches for travel, I figured that I would take the other side of the coin and remind you about well-priced dress watches. Depending on your travel plans, you don’t always want to wear your Seiko Orange Monster. When in a formal meeting or dinner, you might want to choose something a bit dressier, but equally good at delivering value. In that case, allow me to suggest the also Japanese Orient Bambino – or other Orient dress watches. aBlogtoWatch mentioned the great value pricing of the Orient Bambino collection in the past , and we extend that recommendation as being also good for a travel watch when the owner wants to take something they don’t need to worry that much about. Have no worries either, these watches tend to be nice enough that unless you have a lot of specific knowledge of timepieces, no one will know you spent just $100 – $200 on an automatic dress watch like the Orient Bambino.

All-Purpose Digital Sports Watch: Casio G-Shock

Above, we mentioned the Seiko Astron Chronograph as a solid choice for a GPS-controlled quartz watch when looking to travel with something less traditional on your wrist. Nevertheless, as quartz watches go, the Astron collection is still on the pricier side. Something a lot more durable, and easy to choose for most budgets is something in the Casio G-Shock family . For the most part, these are strictly watches for casual and leisure activities, and I don’t recommend wearing a G-Shock if doing anything that requires dinner and long sleeves. This is going to be the most casual choice, but you will be rewarded with a virtually indestructible watch that will happily put up with a lot of abuse and will not heavily penalize your bank account if it gets lost or damaged.

Casio G-Shocks find themselves on the wrists of countless soldiers and outdoor adventurers around the world for good reason. They put up with almost anything and have an impressive set of functions such as a world timer, alarms, chronograph, and most that travelers use all the time. Also, because they aren’t particularly expensive, G-Shock watches rarely attract negative attention and are nevertheless fun.

Without trying to be redundant, here is yet another flavor of high-function sport watch that lends itself well to picky travelers. The key here is a watch with a versatile personality that combines a chronograph complication along with a GMT hand for a second timezone. This is especially good for mechanical watch lovers who want a timepiece for travel with features that they will use on a regular basis.

I’ve personally traveled with a lot of chronograph GMT watches as my sole timepiece and rarely felt the need for more as long as that watch worked well on the plane, in the meetings, walking on foot around town, and at dinner. A timepiece that comes to mind which exemplifies this category well is the Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT (review here) . At 44mm wide (with a series of dials and straps available), the Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT even has companion watches without the GMT hand as well as additional case sizes. The  Apple Watch Series 9  is a powerful smartwatch that gives you many of the most-used capabilities of your iPhone on your wrist. It’s one of the only watches on the market that can be connected to a cellular plan, giving you the ability to access Siri, make calls and texts, and use navigation even without your phone nearby. Surprisingly, it features more advanced health monitoring programs than many of the dedicated fitness watches on our list, like pulse ox and ECG readings. And, an  Apple Fitness+  subscription ($80/year) gets you access to guided video workouts on your  iPhone , iPad,  or  AppleTV . The fitness data from your Apple Watch can be imported into this program to monitor health stats in real-time while you complete your workout, and you can track progress over time. For us, the one issue with the Apple Watch is that it only works if you use IOS products. This integration is great for those already using Apple products, but it’s an expensive world to enter for anyone using a different mobile OS.

The  Suunto 9 Baro  was purpose built for endurance athletes who need a watch that can last through a multi-day activity track with GPS. We’re talking ultra-runners and adventure racers who will really put this thing through the paces. Most of the technology innovations of the 9 Baro focus on extending battery life through intelligent settings that optimize consumption for the activity being tracked; it can last up to 120 hours in its most conservative GPS mode. One such innovation is their Fusedtrack feature, which uses algorithms to provide highly accurate GPS data without the need for continuous tracking. While all of this is very impressive, we find this watch to be overkill for most people’s purposes, and the companion app really needs some work.

Critical GPS Watch Considerations

Extending battery life.

A lot of factors go into your watch’s battery consumption, but some of the biggest sucks on battery life include GPS usage, backlight, high-res color displays, and frequency of sensor tracks (heart rate, pulse ox, etc.). Many watches have battery saver modes or different battery usage profiles you can set for the activity you’re tracking. Make sure to look at a watch’s battery life in GPS mode to ensure it’ll work for the types of activities you want to record.

HEART RATE MONITOR ACCURACY

GPS watches use light sensors to track your heart rate. When the light passes through your skin, it measures when a larger volume of blood runs through your wrist and counts that as a heartbeat. This method isn’t as accurate as a chest strap monitor, but here are some tips for getting the best reading possible from your wrist.

Watch fit & placement

Make sure the watch is tight enough on your wrist so that the optical sensors on the underside of the watch always make contact with your skin, but not so tight that it affects circulation. You should be able to move the watch up and down your wrist a little, but your skin should move with it if it’s properly fitted. The ideal placement is on the top side of your wrist above your wrist bone.

Keep the sensors clean

Dirt and sweat can build up on your watch after hard workouts or prolonged periods of wear. Gently wash your watch regularly to get rid of any residue buildup.

Update your watch

In our experience, watch companies are great about keeping software up-to-date on their products. Make sure to periodically check for available updates (usually found under system settings on your watch or in the companion app) as they may include improvements that affect accuracy of data.

Warm up before you start an activity track

If it’s cold out or you’ve been inactive, you may have a smaller volume of blood flowing through your wrists. Doing a quick warm-up exercise before starting an activity track will get your blood pumping more and will improve accuracy.

Dark tattoos can prevent sensor lights from penetrating skin to read your pulse. Switch wrists or change the placement of your watch if you can to avoid the sensors sitting on heavy spots of dark ink.

Chest straps

If having the most accurate heart rate possible is critical for you, you’ll want to get a chest strap heart rate monitor. Digital watches indeed swept over the wristwear industry like wildfire upon their release, garnering intense adoration for their cutting-edge silhouettes, technical dials, and other interesting additions. But, like their mechanical predecessors , they too would falter, fizzle, and take a back seat to new, emerging technologies. Throughout the years, they’ve made somewhat of a steady comeback; especially within social circles and collector’s groups that vie for nostalgic, vintage timepieces. However, that doesn’t mean that there are contemporary models that haven’t adopted the digitized look. Below, we’ve aggregated some modern-day variants that are either homages or revisions of past models, as well as a handful of new-and-improved timekeepers that have been inspired by their predecessors. Analog and mechanical watches have had their day. They’ve laid the groundwork for forthcoming options, they’ve been adorned by the most notable individuals, and they’ve helped to usher in the new era of timekeepers for the next-gen wearer. As times began to change, wearers beckoned manufacturers to create something a bit more “futuristic” — to adorn their watch faces in blocked numbering, lettering, and illumination. Thus, the age of digital was born. Today, digital watches are making a big comeback thanks to nostalgia and a heightened sense of utility; they’re stylish yet affordable timepieces that give you the time at a glance. That said, there are a lot of options available and it can get hard to sift through the noise.

For our guide, we wanted to get hands-on with the best digital watches available. For starters, we took a look at the current landscape and tapped into our own expertise of the most renowned and popular models out right now. We then made a short list of watches we thought could make the cut and tested them against an array of criteria, including aesthetic, function, fit, durability, battery life, and price. From there, we spent some time with each timepiece to see how comfortable each one was and came up with the list you see before you. You’ll see how it looks on-wrist below; our tester has a wrist size of around 7.75″, so keep that in mind. The entire process took a couple of weeks but we’re happy to present you with our favorites.

Durability: Like analog watches, the cases on digital watches can be made from stainless steel, titanium, and ceramic, but also often utilize a strong resin material that may increase the drop resistance. Because nothing is actually moving inside these non-mechanical timepieces, they’re relatively more resilient to shocks.

Battery Life: A battery on a digital watch can last upwards of 10 years at a time, which, as stated above, is an inherent benefit over analog. However, if the watch uses a standard battery instead of quartz, that longevity can be much less.

Appearance: This may be the only factor you look at when picking a digital watch, and for good reason. How a timepiece looks on our person can make us overlook any other issues it may possess. This will be up to personal preference but there are some excellent options available.

Features: Digital watches can be great for their features, which can often be added without much increase in the price tag. While certain models will be time-only, others may have a chronograph, alarms, time zones, and more.

Best Cheap Digital Watch: One of the undeniable benefits of collecting digital watches is that they’re so darn inexpensive. However, with this current wave of ‘ 80s and ’90s nostalgia , brands have understandably taken advantage. Some options, as you’ll see, are over a grand. But no need to fear; you can always count on Casio to bring you formidable timepieces that won’t cost you more than a month’s cable bill. And as for the F91W, it won’t be more than just a few cups of coffee.

Continuously in production since 1989, the F91W was Casio’s way of making their own version of the 5600 from their sublabel, G-SHOCK, which was released just a few years prior. This piece has been well used throughout the years, and for good reason. We love its accessible 35.2mm case size, 7 years of battery life, and plethora of features, including a stopwatch, hourly alarms, an automatic calendar, 12/24 hour time formats, and a built-in LED.

Best World Timer: One of the benefits of digital watches over their mechanical counterparts is the significantly reduced price . We’re talking a few hundred bucks over thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars. However, if you’re looking for even more of a price reduction, look to some of Casio’s latest retro-style models, including this multi-function digital piece, which features a stopwatch/timer, a world time map, five alarms, 10 years of battery life, a bright LED illumination, and 100m of water resistance — and at just $30! There’s even a stainless steel version at the same price point.

Housed in the black resin case, you’ll notice each function is displayed across several different screens, most notably the world time map, which is capable of cycling through 31 different time zones across the globe. We love how the watch feels on our wrist, with the 39.5mm case size feeling much smaller and lighter than it would seem. As a blast from the past, the Casio World Time feels straight out of the ’80s in a way that most retro revivals can only hope to achieve, for better or worse.

Best Retro-Style Watch: Digital watches have a long history, meaning that many of the modern and contemporary variants that we know today had to come from somewhere. If you’re looking for a definitive “retro” model, check out the T80 from Timex, which was inspired by the brand’s very first digital watches from the ’70s and ’80s . Available in black, steel, and gold, the T80 features a matching expansion band that’s easy to take on and off. 34mm in diameter, the timepiece features an alarm function, a calendar display, and 30m of water resistance.

Although there are a lot of digital timepieces with one foot in the past, the Timex T80 has an accessibility to it that most retro watches may not have. Despite the low price tag, the T80 still has a great deal of perceived value and you could reasonably get by wearing it to less casual functions, compared to something like the F91W above, which may be more reserved for relaxed or everyday scenarios. We loved the options available for the strap, especially the stainless steel unit that stretches to fit your wrist without needing adjustment.

Best PSR Alternative: While a Hamilton PSR will cost you upwards of $1,000, the Armitron can be yours for just $70. Of course, the Griffy doesn’t have the pedigree or the prestige as the legendary Hamilton timepiece –– nor does it possess the build quality –– but it certainly echoes its competitor in style and minimalism. An updated version of the brand’s ’70s-era model, the Griffey reissue enlarges its numerals and swaps the LCD for LED.

In terms of size, the 34mm stainless steel case wears much larger than that thanks to the integrated bracelet. Function-wise, the watch features two side buttons, one of which turns on the time when the screen is blank. Pressing it a second time activates a calendar feature. The second button is used to set the time. We loved the plethora of case finish options and versatility. However, the bracelet feels flimsy and the clasp isn’t as secure as we’d hoped for. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic watch if you’re going for the OG aesthetic and don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars.

Best Overall: If you want to purchase the definitive paragon of the digital watch, look no further than G-SHOCK — more specifically, the 5600 Series, an updated version of the brand’s first-ever timepiece from 1983. Sporting all the staples from the Casio sub-label, including 200m of water resistance, the easy-to-read display, and the user-friendly stopwatch/timer features, this DW5600E has a timeless aesthetic that transcends the very idea of retro reissue. G-SHOCKs seem to live forever (that’s not to mention the 10-year battery life) and this quintessential reference is proof.

Aside from the timeless appearance, the 5600 is possibly the most indestructible watch on the planet. Likewise, we’re big fans of how reliable the watch is as a whole, with its accurate time-telling thanks to its quartz movement which automatically synchronizes to a time code transmitted by a radio transmitter, as well as its Tough Solar, using not just the sun’s power for charging but certain man-made light as well. Like many G-SHOCKs, this piece wears much smaller than its larger size, while the black coat looks slimmer to the eye than a metal case version might be.

Best Performance Watch: First released in 1999, Timex’s IRONMAN Flix has become a favorite for endurance athletes , outdoorsmen, and first responders alike. Now, online retail curator Huckberry has partnered with the watch brand to bring back the Flix in one of the most faithful recreations possible. Housed inside of its 44mm resin case with 100m of water resistance is a display that favors legibility so you don’t have to stare at your wrist to figure out the time. Other returning features are the 5 alarms, countdown timer, 10-item memo pad, INDIGLO Night-Light illuminator, and a hands-free illumination option when you raise your arm. The only thing that’s changed here is the Lap Memory, which has increased from 30 to 100.

The IRONMAN Flix is staunchly purist in its tenets, foregoing many smart features in favor of a very ’90s functionality. There are no GPS or Bluetooth capabilities. As such, the features it does possess are fairly straightforward to use, at least once you get the hang of it, with 6 tangible buttons that activate its various capabilities.

Best Dress-Style Watch: Retro reissues are not just a fun conversation starter but can be a way to connect you to a previous era, whether you lived through it or now. However, most digital watches might look out of place in dressier settings . And while we don’t recommend sporting the Yema LED for every dinner date, it’s certainly a solid option when the line is more blurred. Born out of the quartz crisis and subsequent digital watch craze in the ’70s and ’80s, this timepiece from the French watchmaker was revived just a few years back.

Like the best digital watches, the Yema LED is never boring to look at. On the contrary. Despite its simplicity and time-date function, the piece is instantly striking because of its octagonal shape, a screen that extends to the edges of the face, and overall retro-futuristic aesthetic. At 37.5mm in diameter, the watch is comfortable and slim but still has a noticeable wrist presence that wears slightly larger due to its integrated-esque bracelet.

Best Driving Watch: Bulova’s Computron is one of the most abnormal watches on our list, but it’s earned its rightful place due to originality, retro commitment, and sleek design. Based on the 1976 original, it adopts a unique trapezoidal, stainless steel case, and expands its allure with the implementation of an eye-catching blue LED display, day/date window, and dual timezone capabilities . To keep the watch’s overall character cohesive and true, it’s rounded out by a well-coordinated stainless steel bracelet, calling upon a vintage-styled fold-over clasp closure and linkage to give it an appeal all its own. 

Perfect for driving due to an edge display that allows you to see the time without taking your hands off the steering wheel, the Computron’s utility matches its striking appearance. While it’s available in three colors, the gold- and silver-colored options will really catch people’s attention. However, our one complaint is that the current reissues use a polished finish as opposed to the horizontal brushing of the originals, which may bring a bit more maturity to the overall aesthetic.

Best for Car Enthusiasts: Watches and cars share a close bond, and when it comes to auto timepieces, there’s no better option than the chronograph. However, most chronograph options available are of the mechanical variety. Autodromo, a brand renowned for its assertive homages to the heyday of car racing in the ‘50s and ‘60s, has recently unveiled its first-ever digital watch range with the Group C Chronograph. Inspired by the namesake FIA race that went caput after the 1993 season, Autodromo has outfitted its quintet of 36mm steel timepieces in a sleek design language and colors similar to Group C icons of the era.

Unlike other watches on this list, the Group C is not a reissue or reproduction. Rather, it’s a solely original timepiece inspired by a time gone by and an entire culture that doesn’t exist anymore. The four buttons on the sides of the case are incredibly straightforward when activating features such as its backlight or its chronograph functions. Unfortunately, the plethora of buttons means more points for water to get inside. As such, the Group C only has a depth rating of 30m, but treat that as “splash-resistant.” Still, at a mere 36mm, this piece wears accurately and will be a popular choice for fans of small watches.

Best Vintage Reissue: The digital watch world has every reason to thank Hamilton for releasing the Pulsar back in 1972, which became the first-ever timepiece with a digital display brought to market. Today, the Pulsar name is owned by Seiko and the watches mostly sport analog displays, but the PSR Digital Quartz model has been assigned to take direct inspiration from the godfather of digital watches. Minimalist in its time-only design, the PSR is 40.8mm in width, features a hybrid LCD/OLED digital display, and has a decidedly retro aesthetic, even if it won’t be as accessible as some other options on this list. However, the significance of the model it represents is great enough that it earns a spot on our list.

Priced a little steep at over a grand, especially considering the 5-year lifespan, the PSR still attempts to rectify its battery-sucking LED screen by creating a function that keeps it at a low brightness until becoming brighter with the push of a button. Our biggest complaint is the lack of screw pins in the bracelet links; they’re only present in the end links. Also, the PSR swaps the “Pulsar” name on the bottom of the original’s case for the “Hamilton” brand name, which may irritate some fans of the ’70s watch.

Best Analog/Digital Hybrid: When people think of OMEGA , they may recall the iconic divers and chronographs that helped change the game decades ago, and which are traditionally operated by mechanical movements. However, one of the Swiss brand’s most notable references is the Speedmaster Skywalker X-33, a quartz-powered chronograph that’s part of the Instruments line and housed in a 45mm grade 2 titanium case. Sporting the time in an analog display, the watch then has the capability of displaying the time digitally underneath. However, the watch also features a display for the chronograph function, three different time zones, and a perpetual calendar.

Similar to the Breitling Aerospace EVO, the Skywalker X-33 was developed for aerospace use, meeting the needs of astronauts as they launch into orbit. Being the first watch worn on the Moon, OMEGA has close ties with the U.S. Space Program and knows a thing or two about the requirements of space travel. Despite the steep price tag, the timepiece is every bit as masterfully constructed as you would expect from OMEGA. We love how the titanium is finished on the case, while the bidirectional bezel is a definite standout with matted color that plays nicely against the rest of the watch. Likewise, the buttons have a nice click to them that only adds to the tangible experience. The only drawback? 30m of water resistance makes this one of the lowest from the dive masters themselves .

Diameter: 45mm Case Material: Grade 2 titanium Water Resistance: 30m

Technically, any watch that displays the time as digital numbers rather than with traditional hands (also known as “analog”) can be considered a digital watch. And then there’s the term digital in reference to the technology used. In other words, digital watches use quartz or Lithium-ion batteries for power rather than mechanical movements.

Hardcore watch enthusiasts may scoff at the idea of wearing a digital watch over an analog one. After all, analog watches are typically mechanical marvels; tiny accomplishments of science that can be exhibited on your wrist. However, there’s the matter of both cost and style that may have you leaning toward digital. For one, there are many digital watches that can be obtained for well under $100, with most of them coming in under $1,000 . Digital timepieces also feature different styles than analog. They tend to be more retro in spirit, reminiscent of the very first timepieces we had in our youth.

The first thing you may be looking for in this guide is a quality smartwatch to buy. However, it must be noted that while smartwatches are technically digital watches, they’re not referred to as such in parlance. Smartwatches typically do much more than just tell time and are essentially just a smartphone for your wrist. The digital watches in this guide are time-tellers first and foremost, perhaps with one or two more functions related to telling time, such as alarms or a chronograph.

Watches With Two Timezones: 24 Best Travel Watches from Entry-Level to Luxury

Aimed at frequent travelers, watches with two timezones are among the most practical of complicated timepieces. Even in an era in which it's easier than ever to check one's current time on any mobile device, being able to read two distinct times more or less simultaneously with a simple glance at one's wrist is still a compelling argument to recommend such a watch to anyone whose work or leisure takes them far from home on a regular basis. In this article we take a look at a range of dual-time watches (also called "GMT" watches, named for the calculation of "Greenwich Mean Time," or the worldwide 24-hour timekeeping system based upon the Greenwich Meridian in London), priced from entry-level to high luxury, from a variety of watchmakers large and small. 

Citizen Promaster Nighthawk

Price: $391, Case: 42mm, Lug Width: 26mm, Crystal: Mineral, Water-Resistance: 200m, Movement: Quartz Eco-Drive, Water-Resistance: 200m

The Citizen Promaster Nighthawk Black PVD sports a highly technical dial that takes its cues from instruments in the cockpits of U.S. military helicopters. The watch’s 42-mm case is made of black PVD-coated stainless steel and its black dial is packed with scales in contrasting white type that are of particular use to aviators and navigators, including the circular slide rule printed on the ion-plated rotating bezel. Two luminous central hands display the current time, while an airplane-tipped smaller hand shows the time in another time zone on a 24-hour scale; the date appears in a rectangular window at 3 o’clock. The movement inside the stealth-look case, Citizen’s quartz-powered Caliber B877, runs on the Japanese brand’s proprietary Eco-Drive technology, enabling constant recharging of power via any light source. 

Seiko 5 Sports GMT

Price: $475, Case Size: 42.5mm, Thickness: 13.4mm, Lug Width: 22mm, Crystal: Hardlex, Water Resistance: 100 m, Movement: Automatic Seiko 4R34

Seiko introduced the first GMT complication to its entry-level, automatic Seiko 5 sports line in 2022, equipping the watches with the automatic Caliber 4R34. Available in three colorways for the dial and bezel — blue, orange, and the black version featured here — the watches have a central GMT hand in a contrasting color, used in coordination with the bicolor day/night bezels (here in black and gray), with rings made of Hardlex glass like the crystal, to indicate a second time zone. The GMT hand is coated in Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite for nighttime legibility. Based on the design of the much-beloved SKX series of Seiko sports watches, the model has a five-link bracelet with polished middle rows.

Bulova Wilton GMT

Price: $595, Case Size: 43mm, Thickness: 12.7mm, Lug to Lug: 49.5mm, Lug Width: 22mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 30m, Movement: Automatic Miyota 9075

Over its long history, Bulova has become well-known for offering mechanical complications at very accessible prices, and the timepiece that joined its Classic collection in 2022 is no exception. At just under $600 in our shop, the Wilton GMT is the rare example of a “true” GMT — i.e., one with an independently adjustable local hour hand — that just about any enthusiast can afford. The watch has a brushed steel case at 43mm; a dial in either white or blue, with applied Roman numerals matching the case tone, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a world-map textured pattern on its surface that adds to its value proposition. The central arrow-pointed GMT hand indicates a second time zone on the bicolor 24-hour scale on the dial’s flange. The Japanese Miyota movement inside is self-winding and stores a 42-hour power reserve.

Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Automatic

Price: $1,695, Case Size: 40mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 200 meters, Movement: Automatic Soprod C-125

Channeling the vintage spirit of Zodiac’s fondly remembered Aerospace model from the 1960s, the Super Sea Wolf GMT Automatic replaces the usual 60-minute dive-scale bezel of the Sea Wolf family with a bicolor 24-hour bezel in bright, eye-catching color combos such as the fan-favorite orange-and-cream “Sherbet” edition and the Neon Edition pictured above. The regular-production models introduced in 2020  (which followed up the preceding, sold-out  limited editions) offer either a steel or gold-tone bezel with a semi-gloss black dial, rectangular hour and minute hands that further distinguish the GMT models from the Super Sea Wolf divers’ editions, and a white-tipped, bright red GMT hand. Zodiac equips the Super Sea Wolf GMT Automatic with an outsourced but proven engine, the Swiss Soprod C-125, which replaces the increasingly hard-to-get ETA 2893-2 that powered the limited editions.

Baltic Aquascaphe GMT

Price: 920 Euros, Reference:  N/A,  Case Size: 39mm Case Height: 12mm, Lug to Lug: 47mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 100 meters, Movement: Automatic  Soprod C125

Founded in France in 2017, Baltic has swiftly staked out its spot on the independent microbrand scene with its vintage-influenced collection, particularly the Aquascaphe, a retro divers’ watch heavily influenced by midcentury classics like Blancpain’s Bathyscaphe models. For the GMT version of the Aquascaphe, Baltic replaced the base model’s unidirectional bezel with 60-minute dive scale with a more travel-friendly, bidirectional (and bicolor) 24-hour bezel, which can be used in conjunction with a central arrow-tipped hand to read the time in a second time zone. The dive-watch DNA of the Aquascaphe series is clearly present, with the dial sporting geometric hour markers, plentiful lume on the markers and hands, and a 100-meter water resistance (half of the diving model’s 200-meter rating, but still substantial). Adding to the value proposition is Baltic’s use of a self-winding Soprod movement inside the brushed steel case.

Mido Ocean Star GMT

Wildly popular in Latin America but only vaguely familiar to many watch aficionados in the U.S., Mido has been making watches since 1918 and its nautically inspired Ocean Star line has been around since the 1940s, even before the era of the modern diver’s watch. The Ocean Star GMT, launched in 2020, is the collection’s first dual-time-zone watch, with a sturdy steel case and ceramic divers’ bezel. The 24-hour scale that you might expect to find on the bezel is instead printed on the dial’s flange. A long, arrow-tipped hand points to the scale, enabling the wearer to read the time in additional time zones while the two main hands display the local time. The Powermatic 80 caliber inside the 44mm steel case (the “80” denotes how many hours of power reserve it stores) has been equipped with a specially made module for the GMT functionality.

Longines Spirit Zulu Time

Longines, a watch brand that has supplied aviation pioneers like Hugh Herndon, Clyde Pangborn and Amy Johnson with watches and onboard clocks, stylishly revisits its history of developing dual-time instruments with the Zulu Time model, which joined the brand’s aviation-inspired Spirit series in 2022. (“Zulu Time” is the military radio jargon for the “zero” time at the Greenwich Meridian, aka GMT.) The watch’s 42-mm steel case houses a proprietary automatic movement that allows independent adjustment of both the traditional hour hand and the GMT hand that indicates an additional time zone on the 24-hour bezel, with lacquered engraved numerals on its colorful ceramic bezel insert. Oris Whale Shark Limited Edition

Oris has released a number of special editions devoted to supporting environmental charities, specifically those with a mission of preserving endangered marine wildlife. Among the most notable is 2021’s Whale Shark Limited Edition, which features a multi-part stainless steel case measuring 43.5 mm in diameter and a robust 300-meter water resistance thanks to its securely screwed crown. The bezel, with an inlaid blue ceramic insert to match the dial, rotates in both directions and is etched with a 24-hour GMT scale that reveals a second time zone with the aid of an orange-tipped hand — meaning it’s more of a watch for traveling than actual diving. The bezel’s gradation bleeds from black, for nighttime hours, to blue, for daytime, while the dial has both a similar light-to-dark motif and a sharkskin-textured, engraved  texture that evokes the watch’s marine predator namesake; the solid steel caseback also depicts a relief illustration of a whale shark. The movement inside is the automatic Oris Caliber 798, based on the Sellita SW330-1, with a power reserve of 42 hours.

Ball Watch Hydrocarbon AeroGMT

Ball Watch’s Hydrocarbon AeroGMT is not the first homage to the trendsetting “Pepsi” Rolex GMT-Master model of the 1950s, but it is one of the most solidly built, with a rugged, 42mm steel case whose bicolor, bidirectional GMT bezel is made of scratch-resistant sapphire. The dial has a 24-hour scale rather than a traditional 12-hour layout, with 12 corresponding hour markers instead placed on an inside flange. Using the red-tipped GMT hand along with both scales, the wearer can potentially read three time zones at once. Like all watches from Ball, the dial uses tritium-filled micro-gas tubes for its luminous elements rather than the more common Super-LumiNova; the former glows brighter and longer than the latter and requires no outside light source to activate. Beating inside is an ETA-based, COSC-certified, self-winding movement, protected from magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m and impacts up to 7,500 Gs.

Bell & Ross BR V2-93 GMT Blue

Bell & Ross veers away from its square-cased “Instrument” look with this model from its BR V2 series of round-cased timepieces (the “V” in this instance referencing the “vintage” influence). The sunburst blue dial hosts large Arabic numerals and intermittent indices along with a prominent red-hued arrow-tipped hand to point out the second time zone on a 24-hour bezel that has been subdivided into gray and blue sectors (for daytime and nighttime hours, respectively). The date appears discreetly in a round window at 4:30, and the seconds hand’s airplane-shaped counterweight subtly references the brand’s devotion to aviation-inspired design. Bell & Ross’s ETA-based, automatic Caliber BR-CAL.303 ticks inside, offering a power reserve of 42 hours.

Tudor Black Bay GMT

The Tudor Black Bay GMT takes the classical design of the GMT-Master from parent brand Rolex and gives it a very contemporary spin that is distinctly 21st-Century Tudor.  Like its iconic predecessor, its bezel sports a bicolor 24-hour ring on which the wearer can read a second time zone thanks to the dial’s GMT hand; on the Tudor model, the famous bright red-and-blue “Pepsi” colorway of the bezel is slightly modified to a more muted indigo-and-burgundy combo that speaks to the design language of the Black Bay. The newest version features an opaline white dial with a galvanic finish that imparts to it a silvery-grained texture. The outlines of the dial’s hour indexes have been darkened to stand out more boldly. The 41mm steel case holds Tudor’s self-winding,  manufacture Caliber MT5652, which boasts an antimagnetic silicon balance spring and a “weekend-proof” 70-hour power reserve. Like all Tudor in-house movements, it carries a chronometer certification by the Swiss testing agency COSC .

Bulgari Aluminium Amerigo Vespucci Edition

In the late 1990s, Bulgari became the first watchmaker to pair a case made of aluminum with a sporty rubber strap. The Italian jewelry-and-watch brand resurrected the Aluminium model (its preferred spelling in Europe) in 2020 and added a handsome GMT-equipped model a year later, targeted at travelers eager to emerge from lockdowns. This 1,000-piece limited edition released in Summer ‘22 pays tribute to the 15th-Century Italian explorer for whom the Americas are named, and the Italian naval vessel named for him. Its 40-mm aluminum case features a black rubber bezel engraved with the double “BVLGARI” in Roman-style letters; inside its border, surrounding the black dial is a two-tone 24-hour scale in yellow and black that is used in concert with the central yellow-tipped GMT hand to set the time in the wearer’s home city or any other chosen time zone. Exclusive to this special edition is the tricolored strip above 6 o’clock representing Italy’s flag. The stylish strap is made of the same rubber as the bezel, the exhibition caseback is titanium, and the self-winding movement on display behind that caseback stores a power reserve of 42 hours.

Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT Triple Time Zone “Mount Hotaka Peaks” SBGE295

The green dial of Grand Seiko’s newest GMT-equipped watch takes its eye-catching texture from the summertime vegetation on the peaks of Mount Hotaka in Japan’s Nagano prefecture, which loom over the skyline of the city of Shinshu and are visible through the windows of Grand Seiko’s watchmaking studio there. The stainless steel case is 44mm in diameter, with a 24-hour bicolor GMT bezel whose durable ring is made of sapphire and underpinned by a generous coating of Grand Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite luminous material. The dial has large indexes and hands, also LumiBrite-coated, and a 24-hour chapter ring on the flange that can be used to track a third time zone, The movement inside is Caliber 9R66, a descendant of the original Caliber 9R65 from the first generation of Grand Seiko Spring Drive timepieces, with a three-day power reserve and an added hour hand that can be adjusted to the local time without stopping the movement.

Montblanc Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygene

Montblanc takes its mountain-exploration theme to a new height — or perhaps, a new summit — with the 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygene, introduced in 2022. As its name implies, it is the world’s first “zero oxygen” timepiece, meaning it has been constructed to be utterly devoid of oxygen inside the case, which eliminates fogging and oxidation that might otherwise occur when using the watch at the high altitudes and freezing temperatures that one would encounter on a mountaineering expedition. As part of the Geosphere series, the watch features a unique dual-time display via two turning globes on the dial, one for each hemisphere, along with a 24-hour scale, a day-night indicator, and a date disk. This model — which Montblanc says has actually been tested on an expedition up Mount Everest — also features an integrated chronograph. The oxygen-free automatic movement is ensconced inside a titanium case, between the “glacial blue” dial and the solid caseback with a laser-engraved, photorealistic rendering of Everest.

Panerai Luminor BiTempo

Panerai continues to build on its now-famous heritage as the purveyor of robustly engineered and boldly designed dive watches for the Italian Navy in the 1940s with its modern Luminor collection, which welcomed the dual-time BiTempo model to the family in 2022. The 44mm steel watch depicts two distinct time zones on its sandwich-style dial, in either sunbrushed blue or matte black, both with a central arrow-pointed hand in bright Cerulean blue that points to the hour in a traveler’s home time zone. Running seconds are displayed on a subdial at 9 o’clock, while the date appears at 3 o’clock and an additional subdial at 5 o’clock uses another, smaller bright blue hand to indicate the state of the movement’s 72-hour power reserve (with the Italian word “Ore” for “hours” serving as a reminder of Panerai’s Florentine origins). The case features the brand’s patented, bridge-style crown protection device on the right side and contains the self-winding in-house Caliber P.9012, on display behind a sapphire caseback.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GMT Big Blue

Price: $11,700, Case Size: 45.5mm, Lug width: 22mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 600 meters, Movement: Automatic Omega Caliber 8906

Omega offers a handful of GMT options in its Seamaster Planet Ocean line, the most noteworthy of which is the Deep Blue edition, the successor to the Deep Black models, which is the first Omega watch with a case made entirely from a monobloc of blue ceramic. Orange and blue are the signature colors of the Planet Ocean series, so orange highlights abound throughout the design, including in the 24-hour GMT scale surrounding the dial and the first 15-minute-sector of the bezel’s 60-minute diving scale, which combines orange rubber and ceramic. Inside the stately 45.5mm case is an in-house movement, Omega’s Master Chronometer Caliber 8906, with a 60-hour power reserve and an industry-leading 15,000 Gauss magnetic field resistance.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s signature dress watch, the Reverso, was originally designed as a sports watch, its reversible swiveling case making it a practical timekeeper for polo players who wore it during a match to protect the crystal from being struck by errant mallets and balls. In production since 1931, the Reverso is now available in numerous variations, including the Duoface models, which feature two different time zones depicted on both sides of the reversible dial. The watch features the clean, angular Art Deco-era styling that has become emblematic of all Reverso watches, including the gadroons at the top and bottom. Its main, front dial has a sleek sunburst finish while the back dial hosts a figure eight of overlapping opaline subdials framed by a clous de Paris guilloché background; the larger subdial shows the time in a second time zone, while the smaller one displays the time in 24-hour format along with a day-night display. The Reverso Duoface houses the manually wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 854A/2, an in-house movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Dual Time

To many, Ulysse Nardin’s most iconic watch is the disruptive, idiosyncratic Freak, which the maison introduced in 2001 and has been refining ever since. However, more classical in its design and more evocative of Ulysse Nardin’s origins as a provider of chronometers to navies in the 19th and 20th centuries, is the Marine Torpilleur, which takes its name from a historical type of torpedo on battleships. The steel case and marine-blue dial take inspiration from a vintage sea captain’s chronometer, with Roman numerals, ornate hands, and a stacked subdial arrangement. The Dual Time variant features on its dial a large date in a double window at 2 o’clock, a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, and an indicator for its traveling wearer’s home time (in 24-hour format) in a round window at 9 o’clock. User-friendly “+” and “-” pushers on the side of the polished steel caseadjust the hour hand forward or backward to quickly change the local time on the hands. Ticking inside is the automatic Caliber UN-24, with a decorated gold rotor and a power reserve of 42 hours.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

The original Rolex GMT-Master, released in 1954, was a trend-setter for many travel watches to follow: it was the first watch capable of displaying the time in two separate time zones via a fourth, central 24-hour hand and a bidirectional rotating 24-hour bezel. Its dual-time functionality — and its now-iconic red-and-blue bicolor 24-hour bezel — are the products of Rolex’s collaboration with Pan Am Airlines pilots to develop the model, which was intended to allow pilots to track time simultaneously at their home and destination cities. The rest, as they say, is history, as the GMT-Master and its successor, the GMT-Master II, which added an independently adjustable GMT hand, has gone on to become one of Rolex’s, and the world’s, most storied and coveted luxury sports watches. The modern models are 40mm in diameter and are powered by in-house, chronometer-certified automatic movements that achieve a power reserve of 70 hours.

Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT

Hublot’s Big Bang is not a watch one usually thinks of when looking for a utilitarian travel watch, but the Big Bang Unico GMT, which eschews the usual chronograph function, is one of the most user-friendly models to be found. The chronograph-style push-buttons advance the hour hand forward or backward in hourly increments to set the local time independently of the other hands, including the GMT pointer, and a safety mechanism prevents both pushers from being accidentally operated at once. The skeletonized dial, a hallmark of the Big Bang series, is designed to display two time zones at once, both on 12-hour scales, and features a day-night ring for an easy reading of the home time in AM/PM format. Hublot’s Unico HUB1251 caliber can be viewed through both the front and back of the 45mm case through sapphire crystals. 

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time

Vacheron Constantin has been making watches since 1755 but it waited until 2018 to install a dual-time complication in its sport-luxury Overseas collection. The 41mm case’s distinctive six-sided bezel, inspired by the maison’s Maltese Cross emblem, frames a lacquered black dial with a velvet-textured flange. The red-tipped GMT hand indicates the home or reference time on the same ring of 12-hour indexes as the hour and minute hand for the local time and is linked to the AM/PM indicator at 9 o’clock. With an additional, sophisticated hand-type date display on the subdial at 6 o’clock, which is linked to the local time, the Overseas Dual Time offers additional everyday functionality for the wearer while at home or abroad. Vacheron’s self-winding manufacture Caliber 5110 DT beats inside, behind a sapphire caseback, distinguished by a gold rotor with an engraved wind rose emblem. 

Parmigiani Fleurier GMT Rattrapante

Price: $28,700, Case Size: 40mm, Thickness: 10.7mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 60 meters, Movement: Automatic Caliber PF051

With the introduction of the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante in 2022, Parmigiani Fleurier created a world-first complication: a practical “jumping” GMT hand to quickly and easily shift between two time zones. Here’s how it works: the dial hosts two superimposed hour hands, both in the brand’s familiar Delta shape: one in rhodium-plated gold to display the local time, the other in rose gold for the home time. Pressing the pusher at 8 o’clock moves the former hand forward in one-hour increments to change the local time when the wearer travels abroad. Pushing the rose-gold button integrated in the crown snaps this local-time hand backward, in the same manner as a split-seconds chronograph hand, to its original position aligned with the home-time hand when the traveler returns home. This useful functionality comes in Parmigiani’s typically elegant package: the watch’s Milano blue dial is enhanced with the barleycorn guilloché motif that distinguishes the Tonda PF collection, and the platinum bezel on the 40mm polished steel case has been finely knurled. The same nature-inspired guilloché pattern adorns the gold micro-rotor of the all-new manufacture Caliber PF051, along with an array of other haute horologerie finishes.

Patek Philippe Calatrava 24-Hour Display Travel Time

Price: $57,370, Case Size: 42mm, Thickness: 9.85mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 30 meters, Movement: Automatic Caliber 31-260 PS FUS 24H

Patek Philippe’s 2023 headliner at Watches & Wonders Geneva was the Calatrava 24 Hour Display Travel Time, which features a rare 24-hour dial with a hand that makes one full rotation (rather than the traditional two) around it per day. This unconventional timekeeping display is paired with Patek’s now-familiar Travel Time complication, which indicates two time zones via a patented system in which the local-time hour hand can be easily moved in  both directions by a press of the crown. The elegant simplicity of the dial, with noon represented at 12 o’clock with a “12,” and midnight at 6 o’clock with a “24,” allows Patek Philippe to dispense with the usual day-night or AM-PM indicator that one often finds on a dual-time dial. The classical, round Calatrava case measures 42mm in diameter and just under 10mm thick; beating inside it is the in-house automatic Caliber 31-260 PS FUS 24H, with a 48-hour power reserve. The navy blue dial has a variety of contrasting elegant finishes, a railway style minute track, and applied Arabic numerals and baton markers in rose gold to echo the case. The hands, including both “local” and “home” hour hands, are in the vintage syringe style emblematic of Patek’s Pilot collection and made of rose gold, except for the contrasting sword-shaped seconds hand, which is in white gold.

A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone

The now-iconic Lange 1 has been the modern flagship of the reconstituted A. Lange & Söhne brand since its introduction in 1994 and the Lange 1 Time Zone was Lange’s first watch with a dual time-zone indication when it debuted in 2005. In a clever tweaking of the original, asymmetrical Lange 1 dial ensemble, the main (i.e. local) time display remains on the large subdial at 9 o’clock, and the large “outsize” date stands in its usual position, while the smaller 5 o’clock subdial, rather than hosting the decentralized running seconds, displays a second time zone on two hands in a 12-hour format. The “Auf/Ab” power-reserve indicator occupies the spot between the latter two elements, and a switchable city ring occupies the dial’s periphery. The watch’s synchronization mechanism enables the wearer to “swap” between the time zone indicated on the two subdials. In 2020, A. Lange & Söhne upgraded the Lange 1 Time Zone to the manually wound L121.3 caliber, which achieves the same 72-hour power reserve as its predecessor but stores it in a single barrel rather than two, and added day-night indicators for both the home time and local time to the dial.

With the sheer variety of watches available in the modern marketplace, there are lots of options that all have their own unique looks and benefits. When you are traveling you want to ensure you have taken the right steps to pack, protect, and care for your watches. Whether you are looking at buying a watch when you are overseas, picking the right ones to take with you, or are interested in purchasing a watch at the airport, this guide is for you. While I haven’t been traveling much this past year due to the current situation, I just booked a summer trip through Europe. I’ll be taking a few of my watches along, and most likely buying a couple of new watches for my collection while I’m there, so I thought I’d share these useful tips with other globetrotting watch aficionados. We will be running through some tips, FAQs, and other information you need to know when traveling with watches. This will be a quick overview of the topics around travel and watches to give you a good grounding before you fly.

Tips For Traveling with Watches

In this section, we are going to be looking at some tips for when you are traveling with your watches. Some of these may be fairly obvious but you would be surprised at how many people overlook the importance of your timepiece when traveling. Consider Taking a Durable Watch Most people who have an interest in watches will have a few different watches so they can dress up or dress down with the right timepiece. When you are going on vacation, it is a good idea to have a more durable watch in your collection. This does depend on where you are going and your reason for traveling but as a rule of thumb a rugged watch such as G-Shock or Garmin , two brands renowned for their sports and outdoors markets. We would tend to recommend wearing a bulkier watch on the plane and at the airport as you are more likely to be in situations that might scratch or damage a lighter watch, such as moving your baggage around and negotiating crowds.

Only Bring What You Need

Regardless of how much of a watch connoisseur you are, there is often no need to bring more than 2-3 watches when you are on a trip. Do not overcomplicate your packing by trying to transport your whole watch collection just in case you want a specific model for something. Instead, think about packing a watch for informal and one for more formal occasions. Pack for the trip you are doing, it may sound simple, but you would be surprised how many people take their family heirloom or prized watch on a backpacking trip around Europe.

Protect Your Watches

If you are serious about your watches you will not let your nice timepieces rattle around loose in your baggage. You should always think about how to protect your watches when you are traveling, this does not have to be a costly solution, and often using the box it came in is the simplest. In addition, you want to think about what watch you wear to the airport and when in transit, to keep your more high-end watches for the right occasion.

Consider One Watch for Many Occasions

No, we are not talking about committing a fashion faux pas, and there is definitely an occasion for every watch, but when traveling sometimes you want to pack light and multiple watches might not make the cut. As a follow-on from the above point, you do not want to look like you are part of something shady, so understand what does and does not look like a suspicious set of luggage. Customs are on the lookout for stolen or counterfeit items, luxury goods smuggling operations, and evidence of money laundering. So try not to be carrying a lot of high-end items otherwise you will likely be stopped.

This is why it is always good to stay at a hotel when you are traveling with your higher-end possessions. Finding somewhere that has the security you need for your valuables is important, especially if you are shopping for luxury watches or timepieces.

Can I Fly With Multiple Watches in My Baggage?

Technically yes, but the more watches you have the more attention you will attract. If your case or carry-on is filled with watches you are fairly likely to raise a lot of eyebrows from customs. There is no set rule, but it is down to the customs officers’ discretion to determine what is or what is not for personal use. As we said before, just be upfront about what you are carrying, and if you just love watches, try and bring evidence to prove they are for you. I usually use my iPod to tell me what time it is. The problem is, I like my time to be set to Pacific Standard time so I always know what time it is in Los Angeles. I then just do the math to transfer the time. This may sound stupid, but after five years on the road, it’s one of the best ways I can feel a little closer to home.

To be honest, watches have just never been me. I’d sooner tell the time from the sun’s position than wear a watch. But the time has come for me to get my first watch. Dual time zone watches are the perfect solution for a full time traveler like me.

As I enter into my sixth travel year, I think it’s time to finally get it together and get in the right zone.

Travel Tip: When traveling, remember that fancy watches can lure thieves in your direction. As with anything else, be mindful of wearing expensive jewelry and items that can draw unwanted attention. Store and lock your valuables when you’re not wearing them.

I have a different connection to my watch. I like a single time zone on my watch because it reminds me that my time is my own. My kids have grown up, and they can take care of themselves. This sets me free in a magical way, yet at the same time it makes me feel connected to them, like sending out an “I believe in you” shot of love to my family. My watches have to be waterproof. I normally wear a men’s Timex Indiglo sport watch on a black silicone band. The face is backlit at the touch of a button, has a rotating bezel timer, shows day and date, but doesn’t have an alarm. My other favorite watch is a pink Armitron Chronograph digital sport watch with alarm, stopwatch, day and date, but no light. I suppose the perfect watch for me would have a light, day, date, alarm, and a rotating bezel timer. I think it’s worth repeating that an inexpensive looking watch is best for many locations.

We all have a favorite piece we like to travel with. Whether it's a beloved heirloom or a gift from a spouse, HODINKEE Insuranc e is here to give you some tips on how to keep your watches safe while you're traveling. Here are a few suggestions from your watch Insurance experts:

• Update your policy. Make sure that the insurance policy covering your watches is up-to-date with the watches you're going to travel with and includes the most appropriate values.
• Locate your documents. It's a good idea to keep a file – physical or digital – of your receipts, appraisals, or any other documents that, in the event of a loss, would help to prove ownership.
• Choose wisely. Picking a watch that will fly under the radar is a suggestion of many here at HODINKEE who have designated "travel watches."
• Pack them well and keep them close. We don't recommend traveling with multiple watches, but if you do, consider a locked carrying case. Protect each piece in a watch travel case or roll to prevent wear and tear – like something from the Shop . Remember, ALWAYS keep your watches with you, in your carry-on and NEVER in your checked luggage.

Many here at HODINKEE put a small GPS tracker inside their watch cases for some extra peace of mind on the off-chance you and your bags do become separated. Upon arrival at your destination:

• Store them safely. Never leave your watches unattended. If you're waiting for a hotel room to be ready, keep the bag with you at all times. Store your items in the hotel's main safe rather than the in-room safe, which provides minimal protection.
• Avoid the water. While you may love the pool or beach, your watches might not. Remember, not all dive watches are created equally with newer models having higher water resistance than vintage pieces. Swimming or applying sunscreen could damage your piece. Chemicals in swimming pools, like chlorine and ammonia, can pit and discolor gold-alloys, as well.

Finally, when you're back home:

• Spot check. Make sure all your watches made their way back home safely.
• Put them back where they belong. If you have a home safe, put them back inside for safekeeping. If you use a bank vault, plan a visit for the next business day.

There's not much we can do about a long security-check line or getting stuck in the middle seat, but hopefully these tips will help give some peace of mind when traveling with your timepieces.

The Best GMT Watches

Get ready to travel — or at least track multiple time zones right from your wrist.

With the possible exception of the chronograph — which, let’s face it, only we few watch nerds make use of today — if there’s a complication most beloved by collectors and the general public alike, it would have to be the GMT. (Yes, the date window is technically a complication — and no, we’re not counting it.) Why you ask? Because with the simple addition of a fourth hand on the dial and a 24-hour scale or bezel, a GMT allows you to track the time in another (or multiple) time zone(s), making it ideal for travelers.

The GMT watch used to be the purview of large, blue-chip brands that had the money and manufacturing capability to either build or invest in relatively complicated movements — not so anymore. While you can of course still pay quite a bit for the likes of a Rolex GMT Master II, today’s watch scene has made for an exciting landscape of more affordable alternatives. Seiko changed the game when it released an automatic GMT in its casual and affordable Seiko 5 Sports line. This here’s one of the most affordable GMT you’re going to find (that’s actually worth buying). Not only that, but it’s one of the best-looking ones. Timex’s retro-styled and proudly quartz Q collection has been a hit, and adding a GMT to its lineup took it to another level. It’s got a unique vibe in black, but if you’re looking for the style of, say, the Rolex GMT Master II, it comes in bicolor bezel variations, as well.

This is hands down one of the most utilitarian, badass GMT watches on the market. It’s pared-back in terms of looks and functionality, offering a simple 24-hour hand but full of refined details. Wear it to work, bring it with you traveling, wear it on the trail — the Monta Atlas is a watch that was made to be abused. It doesn’t hurt that it’s pretty damn good-looking, too.

The Bulova Wilton GMT is handsome, but what makes it notable is that it debuted Citizen’s (who owns Miyota and Bulova) answer to Seiko’s affordable GMT (above). In the Miyota 9000 family, this is a relatively premium tier of automatic movements akin in quality to those from ETA and similar but offering an independently adjustable GMT hand — a feature collectors sometimes associate with higher-end watches. And, though more than the Seiko 5 Sports, it’s still one of the most affordable automatic GMTs you can get — and you’ve got to love that map-motif dial.

Baltic’s Aquascaphe checks so many boxes that besides being a strong value, it may also be amongst the best recent GMTs, period. You get a perfectly sized 39mm case that’s only 12mm thick, three handsome bezel color options, an automatic Swiss movement, a dive-ready water resistance rating of 100m and either a super comfortable beads-of-rice bracelet or a Tropic-style rubber strap. If you’re on a budget, just pick one of these up and move on.

Farer’s range comprises numerous GMT watches, but to our mind, the descriptively named GMT Bezel series is among the most simultaneously unique and wearable. Svelte at 41mm by just 10mm in depth, it boasts the brand’s striking use of color and comes in multiple interesting variations. It’s further got a Swiss automatic movement, a rotating bezel and an inner 24-hour ring — and a wide variety of straps. If you’re looking for something a bit different, this could be the watch for you.

Yema offers the Superman GMT in a range of variants that are essentially travel versions of the brand’s popular dive watch. They’re also good options, but the brand’s partnership with the French navy (Marine Nationale) has yielded some especially striking models and the Navygraf GMT just might be the best yet. A crisp and modern-feeling blue-and-white colorway is further enlivened by pops of yellow for the GMT and seconds hands, all in an easy-wearing 38.5mm case.

Echoing the historical Zodiac GMT models from the 1960s, the Super Sea Wolf GMT melds a Swiss movement to a reserved black dial, a steel, rotating 24-hour bezel, 200m of water resistance and a matching steel Oyster-style bracelet. With the exception of the modern 40mm case size and a few other subtle cues, you’d be hard-pressed to peg this beauty for a modern watch, it so closely resembles its historical brethren.

Longines’ Spirit pilot’s watch collection is a great example of what you might call a “luxury tool watch.” It combines a practical, down-to-earth design you can wear every day with a lot of refined details, an extremely solid build, a chronometer-certified movement and excellent finishing. It also seems to seamlessly meld classical cues with modern style. The Zulu Time model adds a GMT to that (sporty, rotating 24-hour bezel and all), and in its 39mm variant, it all comes together as damn near perfect for its price.

With a (fixed) 24-hour bezel and pops of sporty red, the Montblanc 1858 GMT seems to offer the toolish style so popular among GMTs. But it also offers something quite different and cool. Look closer: there’s no GMT hand. Instead, a disc beneath the dial operates in the same way, but with a rather different effect. It fills windows around the dial in red to mark the second time zone, resulting in a dial that’s easy to read and much cleaner than those crammed with multiple hands.

Bell & Ross BR V2-93 GMT

Just a wildly cool-looking GMT, built to Bell & Ross’s exacting standards but not outrageously priced. Powered by a Swiss automatic movement, it’s a tad on the larger side at 41mm, but with its well-designed case and satin-polished steel bracelet, it’ll wear like a charm. A bright orange GMT hand and bright white lume ensure great legibility, while a cool black and grey, bi-directional bezel paired with a black dial make for an understated look.

When the Black Bay GMT debuted in 2018, it stunned the watch world. A beautiful amalgam of Rolex and Tudor watches, it provided an alternative to the stupidly expensive and hard-to-obtain GMT Master. The only problem? The Black Bay GMT has itself become difficult to obtain — and we wished it was a little smaller. Enter the Black Bay Pro for 2022, a homage to a vintage Rolex Explorer II and measuring a welcome 39mm. Perfect? Just about.

The quintessential features that represent Grand Seiko’s mastery of finishing, aesthetics and tech are all here — combined with GMT functionality. You’ve got a perfectly balanced design and beautifully executed 40mm case in titanium, and inside is one of the brand’s in-house Hi-Beat movements. That means it operates at 5Hz (instead of the more common 4Hz), and it’s part of a series of such Hi-Beat GMT watches that are some of the most interesting and grail-worthy GMTs out there.

The other Rolex GMT. Though we prefer the Explorer II in its earlier 40mm iterations, the current reference still features your choice of black or white dial and a fixed 24-hour bezel. Why a fixed bezel? The Explorer II was originally developed for spelunkers (cave divers) so that they could distinguish between day and nighttime hours in the complete darkness of a cave — not to track a second time zone. However, the modern versions feature a fully independent GMT hand, meaning you can absolutely use them for travel.

Oh, so you wanted a true baller GMT watch, did you? We got you. You want a Travel Time. Sure, the 5524G is part of the elegant Calatrava line that’s been around since the 1930s, but it ups the interest with a white gold case, pilot’s watch-style dial and typeface, a date complication contained within a subdial, two local and home day/night indicators, and of course, a GMT hand. Matched to a handsome brown leather strap, this is the GMT watch you wear once you’ve arrived.

Types of GMT Movements

There are two real types of modern GMT movements: one with an independently adjustable local hour hand and one with an independently adjustable GMT hand. The former style is sometimes called a “flyer” or “traveler” GMT, as in this case, you can land in a new time zone, quickly update the local time, and go about your business. An independently adjustable GMT hand (“office” or “caller”), however, can be more useful if you’re stationary and tracking someone else who’s perhaps crossing multiple time zones, as you can retain your local time on the watch but easily update a secondary zone. The “traveler” GMT was once more the purview of established brands such as Rolex, Tudor, Omega, etc. They also tended to be associated with more expensive watches, while common third-party GMT movements such as the ETA 2893, Sellita SW330, and Soprod C125 are usually of the independently adjustable GMT hand variety and are more affordable. Since Seiko and Miyota (Citizen) got into the automatic GMT game, however, the landscape has changed considerably. This brings us to another point…

Mechanical vs. Quartz

It’s perfectly reasonable to buy a quartz GMT watch — plenty are available by tool watch manufacturers such as Luminox , Citizen , etc. (You can even buy yourself a high-end quartz GMT from the likes of Grand Seiko that puts many mechanical watches to shame.) Most of these are highly affordable and rugged and will get the job of tracking a second time zone done just fine — or better than fine. In fact, for many people, a quartz GMT may be the better route to take.

Two vs. Three Time Zones

While most GMT watches allow you to easily track two time zones (one via the main time and a second via the GMT hand in concert with a 24-hour scale), certain models can actually calculate three. We’re talking about those with both an external, rotating 24-hour bezel and an internal 24-hour rehaut. Thus one can calculate a first time zone using the local hands, a second by where the GMT hand is pointing on the rehaut, and a third by where the GMT hand is pointing on the bezel. Watches like this are popular even though all their functionality might not be put to use.

Tool vs. Dress

The GMT is merely a complication that can take various forms. Rolex first envisioned the GMT in 1954 as a tool watch made for pilots with a look that continues to influence many sporty interpretations of the GMT today. And, while that fourth hand and 24-hour scale can lend a more busy and technical look to a watch, it isn’t necessarily a sporty or rugged feature by nature. If you want a GMT complication in a dive watch package, there are plenty of those, but if you want something elegant to wear in the office, you can have that, too. The GMT is one of the most popular trends in watches and brands have gotten creative, meaning more choices for you.

Other Travel Watch Options

The GMT isn’t the only way to display a second time zone, however: there are world timers , which display many time zones around the world at once, and there are digital watches , which allow you to scroll through multiple time zones. Some people even use a simple, time-only watch with a rotating 12-hour bezel as a quick fix for travel. In short: do some research on the different systems and see which might be right for you before springing for a GMT, as they’re far from the only game in town.
