Metro Detroit airports prepare for influx of travelers ahead of NFL Draft

By Kelly Vaughen

April 24, 2024 / 12:21 AM EDT / CBS Detroit

(CBS DETROIT) –  Hundreds of thousands of people are making their way to Detroit for the 2024 NFL Draft . Some will be coming by private plane.

Local airports have been preparing for the draft for months, coordinating private flights and planning with the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials said the Detroit Metro Airport is expecting a 5% to 25% increase in traffic.

"What that looks like is anywhere from one to 400 extra operations for the NFL Draft," said Michael Fawaz, the director of Willow Run Airport.

  • Michigan AG Nessel warns of scams, human trafficking ahead of NFL Draft
  • Detroit police ready to execute security plan for NFL Draft
  • Detroiters welcome visitors to the city for 2024 NFL Draft

Willow Run is about 15 minutes from the metro airport. It hasn't seen an uptick in private flight traffic yet, but that could change quickly.

"They can file their flight plan last minute, they can do it today or tomorrow."

Fawaz said the area is expecting the brunt of the plane traffic on Thursday and Friday. And they don't just have to coordinate landings and take-offs. They also have to have places to park all of the planes.

"We will close one of our runways if needed," said Fawaz.

However, he said it's nothing they haven't faced before.

"When Ohio State and Michigan play, it gets very busy at Willow Run. We are only 15 minutes from the Big House, so we're used to that type of traffic."

Detroit Metro is also prepared for commercial travelers, who will have an easier time getting to the draft activities with the new express bus service.

"The Detroit Airport Express will take folks right from the airport to downtown Detroit," said Zachary Kolodin, Michigan's chief infrastructure officer.

He said the city and the Michigan Department of Transportation have done a lot of work to prepare for the draft, including improving highway access and the people mover.

"Work that the city, and in some cases the state, have planned for many years. But we were able to accelerate it in anticipation of the draft."

Kolodin said the draft isn't just an event for athletes and sports fans. through it, there's been added greenery, signage, storefront upgrades, and artwork that benefit all Michiganders.

Detroit plans for travel surge ahead of NFL draft

Visit detroit anticipates a significant economic boost.

Pamela Osborne , Anchor/Reporter

DETROIT – The excitement is building in downtown  Detroit  as more draft goers make their way into town.

“Over the next 24 hours, we’re going to start to see a lot more of the out-of-town fans coming to town, and by Wednesday, the city is going to be filled with people,” said Chris Moyer with Visit Detroit.

Visit Detroit anticipates a significant economic boost, with visitors projected to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars, a testament to the NFL draft’s impact on the city’s economy.

Hotel rooms in downtown Detroit are mostly booked. Moyer says some fans will stay at hotels in surrounding counties while others in Detroit have waitlists.

Airbnb says they still have plenty of availability for last-minute travelers despite seeing a 450% increase in searches in Detroit during the NFL draft.

Many of the guests booking for the Draft are from Michigan, places like Jackson, Saint Clair Shores and Grand Rapids. They’ve also seen quite a few people booked from Chicago and Toledo.

No matter where people come from, everyone hopes to see Detroit on the main stage, including 8-year-old Lorenzo Palac and his dad, who were checking out the progress on Campus Martius.

“We want to get a good look at there, where the inside, where all the lights are, and take a stroll downtown.”

The pair said this is likely as close as they’ll get to taking it all in.

How To Take The Ultimate Vacation In Detroit

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

travel from detroit to chicago

Take a Break is your ultimate guide to the perfect trips to recharge, rediscover yourself and your relationships, and reengage with the world. We’ll cover shopping stops, great bars, restaurants worth your money, photo opportunities, memorable experiences and other important details you need before you book.

Thousands of football fans and sports professionals descended on downtown Detroit over the weekend as the city hosted the 2024 NFL Draft. It’s a fitting location: the home of iconic sports franchises, including the Lions, Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings. But Detroit has so much more to offer beyond the world of sports.

I recently had the opportunity to spend a long weekend in the Motor City with some friends and was impressed by the diverse cuisine, cool shops and welcoming locals. Although the airport services more than 125 destinations (including 30 international), I’ve found that Detroit is not particularly high on travelers’ lists of American cities to visit.

I personally think that should change, and I had the chance to talk to many locals who agree. If you need more convincing, I put together some favorite sites, bites and more.

Where To Stay

I stayed at The Siren Hotel in downtown Detroit and loved the vintage decor and buzzy atmosphere.

It’s a boutique hotel with about 100 rooms and two great bars — including one where you can watch the Detroit People Mover go by as you enjoy a nice cocktail. The other is a pink oasis off the lobby, complete with plush velvet seating and a stunning chandelier.

Exterior of the Shinola Hotel (left), bar at The Siren and The Monarch Club at the top of the historic Metropolitan Building.

Another popular boutique offering is the Shinola Hotel , which is affiliated with the Detroit-based lifestyle brand of the same name. Naturally, the lobby spaces and rooms are outfitted with Shinola products, from clocks and record players to blankets and candles.

What To Eat

Practically everything I ate in Detroit was fantastic, but my favorite meal was at Baobab Fare , a colorful East African restaurant opened by Burundian refugees. Baobab Fare, a 2024 James Beard Award finalist, serves up delicious beef stew, fried fish, slow-roasted goat shank and more.

I also had a wonderful meal at a Lebanese spot called Leila and a top-notch sandwich and latte at the multipurpose cafe Trinosophes . I’ve heard great things about Yemen Cafe , Yumvillage and SavannahBlue as well.

From left: mbuzi at Baobab Fare, Detroit-style pizza at Como's and treats at Warda Pâtisserie.

Sampling some Detroit-style pizza was a must, and my travel companions and I got our fix at Como’s in Ferndale. We also picked up some incredible hummus and other dips from AlTayeb in Dearborn.

On the sweet side, I was a big fan of the pastries at Warda Pâtisserie and bite-sized chocolate treats at BonBonBon (shoutout to the local “Bumpy Cake” flavor).

Detroit is also known for its “Coney dogs,” served at eateries known as Coney Islands. And although locals told me it’s a tourist trap, I’m still curious to check out Eminem’s restaurant, Mom’s Spaghetti , on a future visit.

What To Drink

In addition to enjoying cocktails at The Siren, my group had some excellent rooftop drinks at The Monarch Club at the top of the historic Metropolitan Building.

We also visited Ghost Bar, in the historic mansion-turned-restaurant The Whitney (named for its former resident, lumber baron David Whitney). According to lore, the building is one of the most haunted spots in Detroit and offers guided tours.

Views at the Fisher Building, cocktails at The Monarch Club and the exterior of Madcap Coffee.

Other bars we enjoyed were Cafe Sous Terre (which is a coffee shop during the day), Bumbo’s and Temple Bar . We had a wonderful time dancing at Spot Lite . A friend also recommended the perfume-themed cocktails at Castalia at Sfumato and Salty Dog, a quirky dive bar shaped like a boat.

As for non-alcoholic drinks, we had some great coffee at The Red Hook and Madcap Coffee .

There are plenty of activities and experiences to fill a Detroit weekend itinerary. My friends and I spent time strolling the Riverwalk and exploring Belle Isle, which has lovely natural vistas and a small free aquarium that dates back to 1904 and is covered in stunning green tile. Later, we visited the historic Fisher Building and admired the impressive mosaic interiors.

I carved out a little solo time to check out the Motown Museum , located in the original “Hitsville U.S.A.” headquarters and recording studio. The guided tour was a special experience in no small part due to my fellow tour-goers, who enthusiastically took in every detail and sang along to the Motown hits that played along the way. A couple of music-lovers even started to tear up at points because they felt so overwhelmed with emotion to be in the place where such important artists recorded iconic songs that endure to this day.

When I met back with my group, we shopped around Eastern Market and saw some of the murals in the area. We also went over to Cass Corridor and hit Third Man Records , Shinola and City Bird . As Carhartt is headquartered in the Detroit area, we made sure to pop in at one of the brand stores as well.

From left: The Motown Museum, a Belle Isle scene and a presidential limo at the Henry Ford Museum.

Being in the Motor City, I felt compelled to visit the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation . It’s an impressive complex with endless artifacts and information about the history of transportation in the U.S., and it includes Greenfield Village, an outdoor living history museum where visitors can ride around in authentic Model Ts, old steam trains and horse-drawn carriages.

I can see why the museum is a popular stop for tourists, especially families traveling with children, but I was curious to see how the museum grapples with its namesake’s antisemitic history . Unfortunately, I did not see any acknowledgment at the museum of this dark reality, though I later found a section on its website (and perhaps I simply did not come across a similar exhibit on the property).

Although I wasn’t able to explore The Detroit Institute of Arts , I’ve heard great things about its collection, and on a future visit, I’d be interested to check out The Heidelberg Project as well.

Top 4 airlines serving from Chicago to Detroit

Worst flight in my life. Only was scheduled for a 45 min flight to get our connection flight. It was late by 40 minutes and we missed our connection. Delta was totally useless trying to help and unable to get my family on the next flight because they overbooked it Thus had to get a hotel at my expense and lost a day at Disney as a result. Cost me about a $1000 if you add 2 hotels meals shuttles etc to get thru the day Awful customer service by Delta in Detroit totally useless people

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

Crew were exceptional. Plane was quiet and quite empty, so I had a row to sleep across.

Gate crew helping to scan tickets was a little short tempered with customers. Flight crew was very friendly, welcoming , and provided excellent service on board.

Waited 3 hours on a plane to de-ice due to manpower issues. Waited another hour and a half once we landed because of a gate issue. Missed my connections. Created. A total of 13 hours of delay.

Was a great smooth flight from Detroit to San Diego.

I like that it got us where we were going. Everything else needed work. It was 1/2 hour late and we took off an hour late. The plane had to be cleaned and the disabled loaded on board before we could take off which took forever and then we sat at the terminal FOREVER before we took off. The ride was so bumpy that they couldn’t serve drinks and snack but to about 1/2 the plane. Seriously we should have flown out of Fort Lauderdale. We probably would’ve gotten home several hours earlier.

Great! The plane was decently sized and comfortable. The staff was nice and there was great in flight entertainment

Last minute gate change nearly caused us to miss our flight. Change was not announced or displayed in the main board at the old gate. Terrible communication. When we landed we had to wait 20 minutes because there was another plane at the assigned gate. Not the crew’s fault, but adding 20 minutes to a 45 minute flight sucked.

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

The flight experience was very good! Especially the United Club!

I was not able to buy food in the flight. They refer to include your Credit card in the APP, and if you are not from USA (i have a credit card form Canada) it is not possible

The flight from Ottawa to Chicago took a lot longer due to DC in Ottawa. We got to Chicago and went to our gate to catch our flight. We only had nine minutes I found that very stressful.

Good boarding. Crew started quick with drinks and food. They came around several times for trash which I really liked. Other than turbulence due to storms in the area, flight was great.

The control panel for the seat back screen did not work at all after takeoff.

Plane was so old it had cigarette butt trays in the seat

Everything was good, hard to really comfortable on a flight that long.

Good flights. Departure and arrivals were on time. DFW was a little problematic in that the Skytrain without prior notice bypassed the Echo terminal so that delayed my arrival at my connecting flight.

Because I can’t stand very long in one place, I was allowed to reword.

5 hour flight - full flight - not enough room to use my computer - slightly delayed - Admirals club was excellent quality food, drink made up for flight seating. No food offerred on flight, you ahd to prebook.

Excellent- plan was barely populated. I cannot remember a flight where I was able/encouraged to stretch out!

Great flight. Boarding was efficient and quick. On time departure and smooth flight. Flight arrived early at destination. Good experience.

Had technical issue which delayed the flight period. Flight crew knew there was 5 passengers that the connecting flight was within 15 minutes once at the gate. Rather than identify the 5 passengers to assure they got first. The flight attended mentioned it but didn't assist to assure passengers with connecting flights off first. This caused a hardship and our party of 3 missed the connecting flight.

I don't like that I have to pay if I want extra leg room. The seats are so expensive; I sit in normal seats and my legs and knees cramp the entire flight. I never feel comfortable on AA flights.

Flight was delayed at departure due to weather and the need for de-icing. The flight was smooth but there was a delay at arrival due to weather. We were in a hold for 20 minutes or more. The flight arrived more than 30 minutes late. Airlines have no control over the weather and I'm glad that they follow all safety procedures. Had to wait a long time for my checked luggage. Whole process was slow and the bags arrived wet due to the rain. The onboard wifi and entertainment access was spotty and the signal was dropped several times. Otherwise the crew was great and friendly. They tried to get everyone's bags stowed and seated so we could take off.

Regarding the boarding: it needs more efforts to make it more convenient

Deicing in Denver took forever and I almost missed my connection. De-ice faster! Not Americans fault.

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

Bag self drop off was terrible! No staff there to help. Almost missed my flight. Would never check a bag in with Spirit again.

Can’t say there was anything I particularly liked. Seats were very tight, leather wrapped plastic. I followed up a much longer and cheaper trip from Honolulu on southwest, everything was phenomenal, this flight was the exact opposite. Blows my mind they charge for water of all things. One of the attendants seemed very rude, I watched a taller gentleman a couple rows forward with his knees pressed into the back of the seat ahead, while the woman in that seat leaned forward the entire flight, I’m sure because she could feel his knees. I’ll be avoiding spirit like the plague from here forward.

The flight attendants were very personable, extremely friendly, and had a very good feeling of the energy around them not to mention they’re very funny and engaging. What made up for the discomfort of the seats and the fact that the plane sat for a long time on the Turmac. Not sure if the pilot was new, but the landing was very rough sort of like I was at a magic mountain theme park ride that was built in 1959

Bad weather is one thing but repeatedly changing gates AND terminals after several hours of delays was horrible. Additionally after the long delays, gate agents were delaying us evening further by being overly picky with personal item bag sizes. Get a grip.

Flight was delayed 2+ hours missed a concert because of it…

They kept us on the plane over 90 minutes after landing.

Terrible, long layover was a extra expense as l had to book another airline rather than wait for the already paid for spirit flight. This time around spirit let me down😔😔😔

Delayed as always, which I guess is better than cancelled. You get what you pay for.
