Lluís Salvadó Photography

Working on the website

Hello. I’m Lluís Salvadó.

I was born in Granollers, near Barcelona. In 1998 I began learning about photography while studying Audiovisual Communications. After some years working as a sound system technician, I decided to make a radical change in my life and began working as a photographer in 2004.

I have been making documentary projects, reports on events and, of course, commercial photography. My passion for travelling and catching stories with the camera brought me to co-create Bisual Studio in 2013. Since then, I have not stopped traveling and living great adventures to tell stories that deserve to be told.

Currently working at Bisual Studio . Almost the totality of my work revolves around travel photography, doing magazine reports and working for several agencies. I’m always on the road, being in constant movement and of course, accompanied by my photographic equipment.

Have a project or an idea?

Barcelona, the vibrant capital of Catalonia, Spain, is a city that seamlessly blends culture, history, and modernity, making it a paradise for photographers. The city's architectural marvels, including Antoni Gaudí's masterpieces like the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, provide exceptional opportunities for capturing architectural and artistic beauty. Barcelona's historic districts, such as the Gothic Quarter, offer rich settings for street and historical photography, with winding alleys, centuries-old buildings, and hidden squares. The city's seaside promenades and beaches create the perfect backdrop for seascape and lifestyle photography, where the Mediterranean sea meets urban life. Jordi was a wonderful photographer for our multi-generational trip to Barcelona. He made everything easy for us as we worked together to plan a location and time for our photoshoot. He provided suggestions, answered our questions, and established a friendly rapport before we even met in person. He was friendly, professional, and made the experience enjoyable for the whole family. Plus, the photos were great! -Andreya View Photographer profile
Jordi was absolutely amazing! He was so hopeful about deciding on a spot for me based on some requirements I had for the proposal, and he went above and beyond for the shoot, going so far as to pretend to take pictures of someone else when we got to him, so my girlfriend was distracted. Would recommend anyone to contact Jordi; it was great to work with him! -Jack View Photographer profile
Panna was very easy to work with and shot amazing work! I knew everything related to the area, great photos, easy communication, made the proposal of our dreams come true! 10/10 would recommend her to a friend! -Pat & Sarah View Photographer profile
My husband booked this trip late last year when we found out we were expecting. We thought it would be a fun memory to celebrate our time in Barcelona with Maternity photos. Julia was amazing, we highly recommend her! Not only was the app extremely easy to use, but she was so attentive to our details and made sure we captured all the best memories (and shots). It was a wonderful way to see a part of the city, too - travel guide + photographer! -Kim and Ryan View Photographer profile
Andreu was amazing to work with. I booked the shoot a week in advance after another shoot fell through on vacation, and he was accommodating with our preferred time and location. He was prompt with communication and offered great suggestions based on his local knowledge. He not only helped us feel comfortable in front of the camera but also gave us a historical tour of the area we were visiting. The photos turned out beautiful despite the weather not cooperating. I HIGHLY recommend working with Andreu for your next vacation photoshoot! -Dan & Caroline View Photographer profile
Alvaro was absolutely the best and was there to capture the moment of my surprise engagement photo session. After that, he walked us around and showed us the perfect locations for more photos. He is the best! -Rudy View Photographer profile
Jordi was so wonderful to work with. He was prepared, kind, engaging, helpful, and best of all you can tell he truly loves what he does!! He not only took amazing family photos, but he also gave us a bit of history while walking through the Gothic Quarters. He is a gem and we are so lucky to have met him while we were in Barcelona. We will always cherish the beautiful photos he took of our family, which really captured Barcelona! He also rushed to upload our pictures as I am planning to use them for holiday photos. I couldn't recommend him more. -Melissa View Photographer profile
I can recommend Manuel to everyone. He is very helpful in his communication before the shoot and makes sure everyone is on the same page. During the shoot, Manuel creates a comfortable environment, which is very helpful if you are not that experienced in shooting. The final pictures were beautiful and delivered quickly. -Kishan View Photographer profile
Manuel is very professional, super friendly, and amazingly flexible. We had to change our schedule due to the weather forecast but he was completely open. Although giving professional suggestions and directions, he carefully listened to our demands and did whatever we asked for. His photos are amazing. He is EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED! -Ehsan View Photographer profile
Milena, (Mile) was our photographer, and her energy was contagious! She was all smiles and positive energy throughout our entire shoot. She made us feel so confident and comfortable. Everyone was a little timid at first, but she was able to get us all to show our silly sides and laugh as a family. She was accommodating with photos that my family wanted to shoot. If given the chance to book with Mile, I hope others will take it! Thanks again, Mile, for everything. Our photos came out beautiful! -Leo View Photographer profile

The essential guide to taking travel photos in barcelona.

Harbor couples at Moll de la Fusta, Barcelona, Spain - street photo by Carlos Lorenzo

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover insider tips from pro photographers to help elevate your skills for taking travel photos in Barcelona.

Planning Your Barcelona Photo Shoot Locations

The key to a successful Barcelona photo trip starts with planning where and when to shoot:

1. Look Up Photogenic Landmarks

Research Barcelona’s main architectural and landmark photography spots like La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter. Studying images of these locations will spark ideas and reveal the best angles.

2. Dig Into Neighborhood Gems

Look beyond the main tourist sites to Barcelona's unique neighborhoods . Areas like Gràcia, Born and Poblenou have small curated plazas, street art and shops that tell the local story.

3. Study Lighting Conditions

Consider the changing daylight and colors in Barcelona across seasons and times of day. Early morning and late afternoon often have the most dramatic light.

4. Account for Weather and Events

Plan for how weather and events may alter your locations. A rainy day in Park Güell will have a very different vibe from a sunny one. Festivals like La Mercè also offer unique photo ops.

5. Mix Famous Sites with Local Life

Blend major landmarks with local culture by exploring offbeat areas like the Raval neighborhood. This allows capturing a true Barcelona experience.

By scouting locations thoughtfully, you’ll discover amazing photography spots away from the crowds.

Packing the Essential Photography Gear

Carrying lightweight photography gear while traveling is key:

1. DSLR or Mirrorless Camera

A DSLR or mirrorless camera allows full creative control and interchangeable lenses for quality images. Consider weather sealing if shooting outdoors extensively.

2. Wide Angle and Zoom Lenses

Pack a wide angle like 18-35mm to capture expansive city scenes along with a 70-200mm zoom to isolate architectural details.

3. Tripod or Monopod

A tripod or monopod keeps cameras steady, especially for low light shots. Look for a lightweight, collapsible option.

4. Remote Shutter Release

To avoid blurry shots, a remote shutter release allows triggering the camera without touching it. Essential for long exposures.

5. Spare Batteries and Storage Cards

Carry extra charged batteries and high capacity memory cards to shoot all day without worrying about missing a shot.

The right minimalist kit tailored to your style will let you travel light while having full shooting flexibility.

Tips for Photographing Top Barcelona Landmarks

Barcelona’s iconic landmarks from La Sagrada Familia to Casa Milà demand unique photographic approaches to capture their grandeur:

1. Shoot La Sagrada Familia Exteriors at Golden Hour

The dizzying exterior of the UNESCO-listed basilica  comes alive during the warm light at sunrise or sunset. Capture its texture from multiple angles.

2. Compose Wide Shots of Park Güell

Use a wide lens to emphasize the sprawling scale of Park Güell’s architecture along with the city views beyond. Position yourself on higher ground like the viaduct.

3. Photograph Casa Milà’s Organic Shapes

Highlights of the Gaudí masterpiece include the rippling stone facade and mushroom-esque chimneys. Move around for abstract geometric compositions.

4. Seek Reflections Along Montjuïc Magic Fountain

The Magic Fountain's water acrobatics provide fantastic reflections with Barcelona as a backdrop. Use slow shutter speeds to capture motion.

Each iconic site has sweet spots for composition and lighting. Visualize your desired photos before visiting to maximize your time there.

Getting Creative With Barcelona Architecture and Street Photography

Beyond the main sights, Barcelona’s streets are filled with captivating photographic possibilities:

1. Photograph La Rambla Eclectic Street Life

Capture a mix of street performers, flower stalls and architectural details along the storied La Rambla promenade . Convey both bustle and beauty.

2. Compose Surreal Architecture in Park Güell

The curving architecture along with colorful mosaics make for striking photos. Convert to black and white or boost color saturation to add an otherworldly effect.

3. Capture Quirky Barcelona Street Art

Barcelona’s street art scene  provides endless opportunities for eye-catching photographs . Capture wall murals in full along with details.

4. Frame Intriguing Street Photography Moments

Keep your eyes open for candid moments like an abuelita hanging laundry or children playing soccer. Capture authentic local life.

Look for unique ways to portray familiar Barcelona scenes. Push your creativity by playing with lighting, angles, colors and composition.

Essential Techniques for Better Barcelona Travel Photos

Equipped with versatile photography skills, you can transform Barcelona’s sights into spectacular images:

1. Master Exposure and Focus

Learn exposure triangle fundamentals of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and techniques like bracketing to optimize exposure . Use hyperfocal distance and manual focus for tack sharp architecture shots.

2. Shoot During Golden Hour

The soft, warm light around sunrise and sunset flatters almost any subject. Time your sessions around golden hour  for magical photos in Barcelona.

3. Utilize Leading Lines and Symmetry

Incorporate leading lines via roads or railings to draw the eye into images. Seek interesting symmetry among architectural patterns.

4. Learn Post-Processing Essentials

Post-processing allows polished images from improving tone, contrast and sharpness to cropping for better composition . Invest time into honing editing skills.

Elevate your images from tourist snaps to gallery-worthy shots with these essential photography skills.

Finding Inspiring Locations Off the Beaten Path

Venturing beyond Barcelona's core sights reveals underrated neighborhoods with stories to tell:

1. Discover Hidden Plaça del Sol

This overlooked square within Gràcia exudes vintage charm with its central fountain and surrounding cafés. A hidden gem.

2. Marvel at Castellers Human Towers

Castellers  practice awe-inspiring human towers on weekends in local plazas. A unique Barcelona tradition.

3. Wander Through Former Factory Poblenou

Once an industrial hub, Poblenou  is now filled with street art-adorned abandoned factories mixed among new developments.

4. Find Whimsical Pieces at Gaudi House Museum

Located in Park Güell , this museum provides a peek into the quirky interior designs of the famous architect.

Getting lost in charming local neighborhoods invariably leads to serendipitous photo ops away from main tourist zones.

Time of Day and Seasons for Great Barcelona Photos

Barcelona’s appearance transforms based on time of day and seasonal changes:

1. Capture Cool Tones on an Overcast Winter Day

The soft diffuse light on a cloudy day is perfect for evenly lit architectural shots. Post-process for moody, monochromatic streetscapes.

2. Photograph La Mercè Festival Street Performers

The festive September celebration fills the streets with musicians and creatives . Capture the electric energy.

3. Shoot at Golden Hours in Spring and Fall

The most comfortable seasons in Barcelona also offer ideal golden hour light  to photograph plazas and parks.

4. Seek Out Summer Street Life

Locals flock to Barcelona beaches during summer. Photograph the lively scene along the seaside Barceloneta neighborhood .

Embrace Barcelona's unique ambiance during different seasons and times of day. Let the quality of light guide your photography outings.

Composing Better Travel Photos in Barcelona

Applying photographic principles immediately levels up your Barcelona pictures:

1. Frame Your Subject

Use archways, doors or foliage to frame your main subject in a contextual, eye-catching way. The resulting image tells a richer story.

2. Follow the Rule of Thirds

Position key elements near one of the intersection points  of the thirds grid rather than center-framing. This creates an engaging, balanced composition.

3. Shoot from Creative Vantage Points

Vary your perspective by shooting from below, above, far away or other unconventional angles . Explore all possibilities.

4. Use Leading Lines to Draw Viewers In

Incorporate diagonal or curved lines via buildings, tracks, fences or stairs to direct the viewer's gaze into the frame.

Applying compositional techniques transforms snapshots into thoughtful, artistic Barcelona images.

Editing for Impactful Barcelona Travel Photos

Post-processing brings out the essence of your Barcelona images through targeted adjustments:

1. Enhance Architecture Details with Radial Filters

Use adjustment gradients to selectively brighten, darken or alter color in key areas like making façade details pop.

2. Boost Vibrancy Without Overdoing It

Lift muted tones , especially in landscaping, using HSL tools. But avoid oversaturated colors that look artificial.

3. Reduce Noise and Sharpen for Print Worthiness

Eliminate noise and grain while sharpening selectively  to achieve clean, crisp images worthy of large gallery prints.

4. Crop for Stronger Composition

Trim excess elements via cropping to lead the eye towards key subjects and achieve more cohesive framing.

Elegant editing enhances mood, focus and visual impact. Handle edits with care to maintain authenticity.

Packing Light Photography Gear for Barcelona Travel

For mobility while sightseeing, minimalist photography gear is a must:

1. Mirrorless Camera with Pancake Lens

A compact mirrorless body paired with a tiny pancake prime lens provides powerful quality in a small package.

2. Single Lightweight Zoom Lens

An all-in-one zoom like a 24-70mm allows flexible framing from wide angles to portraits without swapping lenses.

3. Small Camera Bag or Pouch

Keep just essentials like camera, lens, spare battery and memory card in a compact bag for light trekking.

4. Smartphone Camera with Lens Add-On

Consider using just your phone camera with supplemental lenses like moment lenses for ultra-portability.

5. Monopod Instead of Tripod

A lightweight monopod steadies your camera and packs down small when space is tight.

Pick gear that lets you react quickly to photographic opportunities without weighing you down.

Finding the Essence of Barcelona

Aim to capture photos that reflect the true spirit of Barcelona beyond the landmarks:

1. Convey Local Lifestyle Through Street Life

Photograph everyday neighborhood moments that tell an authentic story like children playing soccer or old men debating.

2. Focus on Interesting Small Details

Zoom in on elements like intricately tiled steps, hanging flower pots or street mosaic tiles that reveal local culture.

3. Highlight Festivity

Capture Barcelona’s vibrant events and festivals like Castellers, La Mercè and the summer solstice Correfoc with motion and energy.

4. Show Barcelona’s Creative Spirit

See Barcelona through an artistic lens via architecture details, quirky sculptures and colorful street art.

Seek out photos that connect you to the city’s culture, people and unique aesthetic.

Choosing Where to Stay for Easy Barcelona Photography

Base yourself centrally in neighborhoods that offer great access to Barcelona's photographic hot spots:

1. Stay in Barri Gòtic to Walk to Top Sights

This central district puts you steps from the cathedral, Picasso museum and atmospheric alleys perfect for photography wanders.

2. Stay in L'Eixample for Modernism Masterpieces

Situated in L'Eixample, you can easily photograph modernism architecture  like La Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló.

3. Stay in Gràcia for Charming Plazas and Street Art

This microcosm of Barcelona offers photogenic local flavor among vintage squares  and captivating street art .

4. Stay Near Barceloneta for Seaside Vibes

Photograph historic seaside relaxation along with colorful beach huts in this old port neighborhood.

Base yourself in neighborhoods with easy walking access to Barcelona's most photogenic spots for memorable images.

Avoiding Cliché Barcelona Travel Photos

Create one-of-a-kind Barcelona images by avoiding overdone compositions:

1. Don’t Shoot La Sagrada Familia Straight On

Instead, get closeups of architectural details or shoot from uncommon angles like from across the road.

2. Avoid Closeups of Park Güell Mosaics

Capture the mosaics in wider environmental shots rather than tight macro shots to add context.

3. Don't Just Shoot Barceloneta Beach Parasols

Expand beyond the row of iconic beach huts to show vibrant beach culture through people, activities and landscapes.

4. Skip Generic City Skyline Shots from High Vantage Points

Photograph Barcelona’s architecture from street level or interior plazas for an immersive perspective.

Getting creative with framing, timing and context ensures your images offer a fresh perspective beyond postcard-style shots.

Safety Tips for Barcelona Photography & Sightseeing

When photographing Barcelona, remain situationally aware as you would in any major city:

1. Keep Valuables out of Sight When Not Shooting

Avoid flaunting expensive photography gear when walking between locations. Only bring out gear when actively shooting.

2. Be Wary of Pickpockets in Tourist Zones

Areas with crowds like La Rambla require extra vigilance. Keep valuables secure and be cautious of diversion tactics.

3. Consider a Crossbody Camera Strap

Crossbody camera straps deter thieves and keep your hands free. Use one when navigating busy tourist spots.

4. Familiarize Yourself with City Safety Tips

Review Barcelona city safety recommendations  like standing near others and limiting use of phones.

5. Photograph Responsibly

Don’t trespass or damage property. Be respectful when photographing people, especially children.

Remaining alert allows focusing on great photos without safety concerns.

The original Barcelona photography workshop – A memorable and educational vacation for the avid photographer

Our Barcelona photography workshop offers the travel photographer a unique photo adventure in one of the world’s most photogenic cities. Designed from our years of experience of combining international photo workshops, photographic tours, photo walks, and an insiders knowledge of Barcelona and the surrounding Catalonia countryside, these small-group experiences were our first photographic destination, and are still one of our most popular.

With carefully designed itineraries to ensure that your time with us is as inspirational, productive and enjoyable as possible, you will also enjoy excellent accommodation and some of the best Catalan cuisine that Barcelona has to offer. Our adventure covers photogenic gems in the hidden quarters of the city, away from the typical tourist trails, as well as some of the world’s best architecture. Our itinerary covers the Borne, Raval, Gothic quarter, Sagrada Familia, Poblenou, Barceloneta, Gracia, Montjuic and Eixample districts. From capturing early morning street photography in the narrow, washing-clad streets of El Raval, and the Modernist architecture in the Eixample during golden hour, to the stunning alleyways and plazas of the Gothic quarter at night, our Barcelona photo workshop includes an excellent mix of architecture, environmental portraits and street photography.

Architecture plays a major role in the reason for visiting Barcelona. Each neighbourhood of the city has it’s own particular character, yet manages to harmonise with one another. And due to it’s relatively small size, the residents of Barcelona have a warmth that is usually more associated with a small town than a metropolitan hub. It’s this diversity that offers the travel photographer so much to capture through your camera. From our scheduled group workshops, to one-on-one private workshops, our itineraries can be customised specifically to your preferred photographic genre.

From our 6 day Barcelona photo workshop, we also offer an optional 4 day add-on to rural Catalonia. Prepare to capture some of Europe’s most stunning areas of natural beauty, quaint medieval villages and photogenic locals. The Catalonia extension offers a glimpse into the most diverse province of Spain, and is a dream destination for the avid landscape photographer. As with our other international photo workshops, our Barcelona workshop is run through Photo Workshop Adventures , our affiliate with over 150 photo adventures in over 50 countries.

A full list of our upcoming international photography destinations can be found on our Workshops page. Please feel free to contact us with any queries. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Best Photography Spots in Barcelona

Looking to capture the beauty of the Great Enchantress on film? We invite professional photographer Fran Goncalves, director of Shutter Kings Photo Tours to share the most photogenic locations in Barcelona… all photos his own.

With its abundance of magnificent medieval behemoths, its ubiquitous Catalan art nouveau treasures, and colourful bursts of eye-catching modern architecture, Barcelona is every photographer’s dream. Crowned with the unique visions of the architect, Antoni Gaudi , it’s no exaggeration to say that the Catalan capital is one of the most photographed cities in the world.

There are literally hundreds of amazing places to capture with your camera, but if you really want to skip the classic tourist shots… then take a look at this list.

There are literally hundreds of amazing places to capture with your camera, but if you really want to skip the classic tourist shots and treat your portfolio or social media timeline to some truly cool photos, then take a look at this list.

Whether you’re an old school professional shooting with a DSLR, or a travel influencer looking for the most Instagrammable spots in Barcelona, these locations will offer your lens plenty of material to work with. I’ve also tried to offer some tips on taking the best possible shots while you’re there.

1. Street of El Raval

Next to the iconic Ramblas, El Raval is the most multi-cultural and diverse neighbourhood of Barcelona, so if you’re a street photography enthusiast, this is the place to be . There are loads of great characters and people watching opportunities (obviously abide by the rules of courtesy when shooting people), and several signature locations like La Rambla del Raval, the courtyard of the old Gothic hospital and Plaça del Angels (which I mention later in this guide ).

Pro tip: For amazing light coming through the narrow and full of hanging clothes streets, go an hour before sunset… specially at Tallers street!

travel photographer barcelona

2. Glòries (Modern Architecture)

On its way to become the modern district of Barcelona, the area of Glóries is going through a lot of changes. With the smart buildings and brand new museums, this is place to take advantage of all the geometry, colour and shapes that its modern architecture affords the photographer. There are many intriguing new buildings here, but I particularly like the new spacecraft-shaped Encants flea market infrastructure and its glass rooftop, which appears straight out of Star Wars. You can also visit the market for second hand articles and some bargains (be aware that it’s closed on Tue, Thu and Sun), although the vendors prefer you to buy their stuff than photograph it.

Pro tip: For some super cool images, bring your tripod after the sun goes down to try some amazing long exposure shots of the lighted Agbar Tower and the lights display at the Plaça de Glòries square.

travel photographer barcelona

3. Parc de les Tres Xemeneies (Street Art)

Street art lovers, this is your paradise. This concrete park is rich with graffiti-covered walls that are in a constant state of renewal… and if you’re lucky you might even run into one of the world’s top street artists in action. It’s easy to find them working on the walls and, since in this place it is perfectly legal to paint, they’re not hiding and usually open to be interviewed or photographed.

Pro tip: The ideal time to go here for photos are on sunny and bright days, so the colours of the graffiti works stand out even more.

travel photographer barcelona

4. Estació de França

The last remaining classic train station of Barcelona is a mine of cool photo opportunities! The steel structure of the ceiling and the curved platforms are a perfect canvas to compose your pictures, along with the way light filters in from the roof. Not only that, but the distinctive brown and cream aesthetic of the main foyer is also extremely photogenic. The best part, for shutterbugs, is that there are no turnstiles to access the trains area, you can walk in and get as close as you need to get your shot.

Pro tip: if you have a fancy camera and big lenses, try to be discrete or use a smaller device, since lately some security guards are asking for signed permissions to take photos in this place if they consider your equipment to be professional.

travel photographer barcelona

5. Bunkers del Carmel

Once the home of anti-aircraft guns, now this place – at the top of El Carmel mountain – only guards the best views of the city. Until not so long ago, this was a hidden gem of the city . Now it’s one of the most popular places for photo lovers… but it’s still well worth a visit, even if you’re not into selfies. Why? Because, even when it is crowded, everybody is enjoying themselves so you’ll find a lot of photo opportunities with improvised models, together with great shots of the city skyline and the Mediterranean.

Pro tip: The views may be magnificent, but some human presence make the photos more urban and real. If you’re not comfortable incorporating strangers into your shots, bring your partner or friend and get them to pose for you.

travel photographer barcelona

6. La Barceloneta (Barcelona’s Main Beach)

Bustling with people during the summer, safe haven of surfers during the winter, La Barceloneta beach area offers different photo situations depending on the time of year. There’s always something going on, on the sand and out of it, so go and look around for a different angle. Needless to say that sunrise and sunsets make for amazing shots at this location. You can even take photos while you sit at one of the many beach bar terraces with your favourite drink in your hand!

Pro tip: Try arriving when the light is softest, and keep an eye on the horizon. When it’s not perpendicular to your shot, it can make your photo look amateurish.

travel photographer barcelona

7. Gothic Quarter

This medieval district is full of gorgeous narrow streets, so narrow that on some of then you could touch both sides if you open your arms! Some of the most iconic buildings of the city, such as the Gothic Cathedral, are located in this area so expect many tourists around… but if you dare to go off the beaten track you might find really amazing spots, so getting lost won’t be that bad after all. For every famous corner, there is at least one unknown treasure.

Pro tip: If you want to capture some famous landmarks like the Pont del Bisbe bridge, or Plaça de Sant Felipe Neri, just set the alarm to wake up early in the morning (or stay up til late at night and bring your tripod) to avoid the large crowds!

travel photographer barcelona

8. Plaça dels Àngels (Skateboarders)

Designed by the renowned architect Richard Meier, the MACABA Museum is the background of this amazing square that somehow became the Mecca of skaters in the city. No matter your photography skills, it won’t be difficult to frame one of these extreme sports lovers in front of the many lines and squares of the museum building . Also, its a popular meeting point for all kind of urban tribes, in case you’re looking for portrait opportunities.

Pro tip: A fast shutter speed is essential for capturing skateboarders on the move. If you don’t have a state-of-the-art DSLR, you might want to go earlier in the afternoon when there is more natural light, rather than the very end of the day when cheaper lens and phones may struggle to take sharp shots.

travel photographer barcelona

9. El Born Cultural Centre

The Mercat del Born was one of the first iron structures in the city, but after falling into disrepair was due to be restored and reopened as a library. That was until workers found ruins of the medieval city that was destroyed on the 1714 Secession Wars, and the decision was made to reopen it as a cultural centre instead to display these historic remnants. Besides its historical importance, this attractive location offers a lot of geometry and cool background details for experimenting with different angles. Plus the light coming from the main door is good for some nice backlight shots. Also it has probably the best public toilets of the city in case nature calls in the middle of your photo hunt. Closed on Mondays.

Pro tip: Adjusting your camera height and changing angles can help create new and interesting compositions.

travel photographer barcelona

10. Plaça de Sant Felip Neri

If you were into emo music at the beginning of the 00’s, you’ll recognise this square from the Evanescence music video of their hit My Immortal . The truth is even sadder than an emo love song however, as this plaza was twice bombed by the fascist planes during the Civil War, killing 42 people, mostly children from the school that still exists on the square. The partially-destroyed walls of the plaza ‘s church are a reminder of these terrible times. They also form an evocative and poignant background for photos.

Pro tip: The ambience is this place is special, and even more during spring time since all the ground gets covered with tiny yellow flowers so try shooting from feet level. During weekday mornings, the square may be closed as it is used as a playground for the kids of the school.

travel photographer barcelona

11. El Born

If I could only go to one place to takes photos in Barcelona, it would be El Born district. An amazing mix of old, new, narrow streets, open spaces and street art, the district lies in the city centre but without all the hustle of the Gothic Quarter. Wander around the streets and look for shadows, textures and always keep looking up for some of those that are decorated with pennants, stars or lightbulbs that will look great if you’re looking for a place for a city photoshoot of a model or loved one. More on the district here .

Pro tip: El Born narrow streets are great for street photo compositions… just check where the sun is and shoot in the opposite direction to avoid that bleach effect on the upper part of your pictures. And don’t let rainy days ruin your plans! Look out for puddles to get some amazing reflections and vibrant colours on those streets with decorations.

The Best Photography Spots in Barcelona

Last updated: December 15, 2023 . Written by Laurence Norah - 12 Comments

Barcelona is definitely one of my favourite European cities, and one I love to photograph. Today, as part of my series of photography location guides , I’m going to share with you some of the best photography spots in Barcelona to help you get the best photos when you visit.

After that, I’ll share some general tips on visiting the city, everything from where to stay, when to come, and how to save money on your stay. But let’s get started with:

The Best Photography Spots In Barcelona

1. sagrada familia.

Gaudi’s masterpiece, the giant cathedral known as the Sagrada Familia, is still far from complete, decades after the architect’s death. Whilst it’s fun to imagine what it will be like when completed, it’s still an iconic location to photograph, both inside and out.

Sagrada Familia Barcelona

Outside, you’ve got the soaring towers to shoot, and countless details on the outer walls. Yes, there are cranes and scaffolding, but that’s just part of the story. Shooting wise, I’d recommend heading to the Placa de Gaudi – a little park just over the road from the cathedral. Here you’ll get a wonderful shot of the Sagrada Familia reflected in the small lake at the centre of the park.

Sagrada Familia Stained Glass Barcelona

The best time to visit is either at sunrise (when there will be far fewer people) or at sunset. The sunrise illuminates the front of the building, making some lovely warm colours on the stone. Sunrise is also a great time because it means you can get into the church itself first, and fire off some photos before the crowds descend. Inside, it’s a true marvel to photograph, with a stunning coral like “forest” of support pillars.

Unfortunately you can’t use a tripod, but there’s quite a lot of light in here, so you should be fine. Bring a wide angle lens to get as much in as you can!

We also recommend reading our guide to visiting the Sagrada Familia , which has everything you need to know to plan your visit.

2. Casa Batlló

Fair warning – a lot of the locations in this list are going to be Gaudi properties – the man left an incredible mark on Barcelona, and the organic nature of his buildings means they’re wonderfully photogenic.

Casa Batlló Front Barcelona

Casa Batlló is no exception. The outside of this building is famous for its Venetian mask-like balconies, whilst the roof is known for its beautiful chimneys. Mid to late morning is probably the best time to visit for photos, as the building is on the west side of a north-south street, so only has the light falling on it for some of the day.

3. The Magic Fountain

The Magic Fountain (definitely the best name for a fountain) is a huge fountain that was built on the side of Monjuic hill for the 1923 International Exhibition. It runs a daily sound and light show which draws big crowds, and is a great spot for photos.

Barcelona Magic Fountain

There are a number of locations to enjoy the show – either up close at the fountain itself, or from the top of the hill by the National Museum of Catalan. From the top, you get a wonderful view across the city with the fountain display as the foreground. Definitely worth photographing during your time in Barcelona!

4. Parc Güell

Another Gaudi installation, Parc Güell is situated a little north of the city centre on one of Barcelona’s hills. This means you get great views back across the city, and the Parc is a good spot for sunset photos.

Parc Guell Entrance Barcelona

It’s also an excellent photography location during the rest of the day (although of course, the best light will be closer to sunrise and sunset!). Whilst the vision of the Parc that Gaudi came up with was never completed, the version that exists today is full of interesting photography locations, from the giant mosiac salamander to the huge pillared area supporting the terrace.

The Parc has an entry fee for non-residents in order to manage capacity, and entries are timed. Barcelona is a city that is known for being busy, so this has definitely helped with the crowds, but be aware that for the classic shots of the entry gates, the mosaic terrace and the salamander, you might have to wait your turn a little or just be OK with having some fellow travellers in your shots.

5. Mercado de la Boqueria

Spanish markets are always fun to photograph and the Mercado de la Boqueria on Las Ramblas is no different. There’s been a market here in some form or another since at least 1217, and the market is particularly known for being the place to come for things you can’t find anywhere else.

Barcelona Market

The structure as it exists today was constructed in 1840, and the metal work and market stalls make for excellent photography opportunities, everything from colourful fruit to tourists wandering through and interacting with the stall owners.

6. Las Ramblas

One of Barcelona’s most famous walking streets, La Ramblas runs from Placa Catalunya down to the port area and the statue of Christopher Columbus. Just over a kilometre in length, there’s always something to photograph here, from the various buildings and attractions, through to street entertainers and open air dining experiences.

Las Ramblas Barcelona

It’s also busy at night, when people come out to see and be seen, so there’s no really bad time to visit to be honest. It’ll be quieter in the mornings if you want to get a more empty street feel, and then get more and more busy as the day progresses. A word of warning – Las Ramblas is known for its pickpockets, so be aware of your belongings and keep them safely about your person away from prying hands. More on staying safe in Barcelona at the end of the post.

7. La Barceloneta

Barcelona has a lot to offer the visiting photographer, not least of which is the beautiful stretch of beach known as La Barceloneta.

Barceloneta Beach

This whole part of town has a very “beach” feel, and this is a great place to come photograph if you want to see a sunrise over the water, palm trees against a beautiful sky, people playing, or just some funky outdoor art!

8. Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau

I’ve visited Barcelona a number of times, however it was only on my most recent visit that I headed to the Hospital de Sant pau. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a beautiful early 20th century piece of Modernisme architecture, featuring numerous buildings, many of which are now open to the public as a museum and cultural centre.

Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau Barcelona

It was originally built as a hospital, although the majority of the hospital functions have since moved to the new hospital building opened in 2003.

There’s a lot to photograph here (it’s Europe’s largest Art Nouveau Site), from the wonderful exteriors of the buildings through to the incredible interiors of those buildings that are open, and in particular, the stairway and upper floors of the Sant Salvador Pavillion, which is the largest building on the site. Note that only a handful of the buildings’ interiors are open to the public.

Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau Barcelona

The hospital is a 15 minute walk from the Sagrada Familia, and you can find opening times and ticket information on their website . Very much worth your time to visit.

9. The Gothic Quarter

Ok, so this is a bit of a cheat. Naming a whole neighbourhood as a photography location? Well, bear with me. The Gothic Quarter is a maze of narrow alleyways, most of which are car-free due to their size. This maze of streets is full of photography opportunities, from hanging laundry through to street art, old tucked away churches, and quirky shops and cafes.

Gothic Quarter Barcelona

There’s also the mighty impressive Barcelona Cathedral and the UNESCO listed Palau de Musica, although to get the best photos of the latter you’ll have to go inside to see its beautiful interiors.

I suggest that you just spend some time wandering these streets and getting some shots. They can be dark, as not much light gets in, so you might want to bring a tripod, and consider shooting for HDR as the dynamic range between the sky and the alleyways can be tough on your camera.

10. Port Vell

At the south end of Las Ramblas you’ll find the Port Vell area of Barcelona. This is a lovely part of town where you can wander, photograph the moored boats and people-watch. It’s particurlarly nice at sunset and sunrise, when the light is warm and low.

Port Building Barcelona

I’d definitely recommend taking some time to shoot the Barcelona Port Authority Building, which is beautifully photogenic. Port Vell is also the place where you can grab a boat for a short cruise along the Barcelona shore, which will give you a totally different perspective and view of the city.

11. Montjuic Castle

Above the port and the city, Montjuic Castle offers excellent views of the city from it’s massive walls. Dating from 1640, this impressive construction evolved over time to meet varying military needs, although today is used predominantly for cultural events.

Montjuic Castle

It’s also a wonderful photography spot – both for shots of the castle itself, and for the views over the city.

12. Torre Bellesguard

Torre Bellesguard is one of the less well known and more recently opened Gaudi houses in the city. It’s a little way north of the city centre, so has less footfall, but is nonetheless truly impressive.

Torre Bellesguard

As well as exploring the grounds, you can take a tour inside the house itself, with the highlight being the roof. This has another fantastic view of the city, and if you look carefully, is designed to look like a dragon! Very cool.

Torre Bellesguard

13. Parc de la Ciutdella

Just to the east of the city centre and near one of the main train stations is the Parc de la Ciutdella. This has a number of interesting buildings, including the museum of natural science and the Barcelona Zoo.

Horse Fountain barcelona

Most visitors, however, come to see the Cascada, also known as the Horse Fountain. This was created by Josep Fontsére with a little help from a then largely unknown Anton Gaudi. It’s very photogrenic, with a huge golden statue of a horse chariot atop an arch in front of the water cascade and pool, which offers some excellent reflection opportunities.

14. Casa Mila

Also known as La Pedrera, this is a Gaudi property just a short walk from Casa Batlló. The organic design of the front of the building is very photogenic and worth shooting from the street, however I’d suggest that to truly appreciate this building you have to head inside.

Casa Mila Barcelona

Here, there’s an amazing central atrium which is designed to let the light in to the interior apartment rooms. You’ll also find the chimneys on the roof to be very photogenic, along with the vaulted rooms of the loft space. Definitely worth the entry fee.

15. Colonia Guell

This one is a bit of a stretch, being in a suburb of Barcelona rather than the city itself. However, if you can get yourself out here, it’s worth it. Built as a workers village, there are a number of interesting buildings here, and an informative self-guided tour.

Colonia Guell Church Barcelona

The real highlight though is the unfinished church. This is another work by Gaudi, and only the “crypt” part of the building was completed. Gaudi used the architectural innovations he had pioneered when designing this building, meaning you’re going to see amazing curves, pillars and building materials in a building quite unlike any you’ve seen before. An excellent place to end our tour of the best photography locations in Barcelona!

When to Visit Barcelona

Barcelona is a very popular destination with tourists from all over the world visiting. The best time to visit is in the off-peak season – we visited most recently in January, when queues were short. We were also lucky with the weather – it was sunny most days, even if it was fairly cold (5 – 10 degrees above freezing most days).

Of course, I appreciate not everyone can (or wants to) visit in January. My advice would be to avoid the summer months of July and August if you can, when it will be hot and incredibly crowded. In August in particular, many locals take holidays and so many shops and restaurants may be closed or have erratic hours.

Finally, Barcelona hosts a number of major conferences each year – the largest being the Mobile World Congress in February. Hotel prices during this time can be much higher while conferences are in the city, so check in advance before heading here to be sure you aren’t visiting at a peak time.

Safety Tips for Visiting Barcelona

Personally I’ve not had any problems in Barcelona, although the city carries a reputation for petty crime, in particular pick pockets. These are known to frequent tourist areas, especially Las Ramblas and the metro system.

A friend of mine also had his photography gear stolen from a park bench whilst he was taking a shot (the bag was behind him on a park bench), so be mindful of your stuff. Don’t leave bags or tripods unattended.

I believe that most crime is opportunistic in nature, so if you take basic precautions and are aware of some common Barcelona scams , you should be fine.

Where to Stay in Barcelona

There are a lot of accommodation options in Barcelona. Some of our favourites are:

  • Hotel Barcelona Catedral – a 4* property in Barcelona in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. We’ve stayed here, and enjoyed the roof top pool and incredible central location.
  • Hostel One Ramblas – a very well reviewed and very central hostel option
  • The 8 Boutique B&B – a highly rated and well located bed and breakfast
  • Duquesa de Cardona – a 4* property on the waterfront with a roof top bar
  • Leonardo Hotel Barcelona Las Ramblas – part of the good value Leonardo chain, this 3* property is a few moments from Las Ramblas. We enjoyed our stay here, and the breakfast in particular was excellent.

Apartment rentals through sites like AirBnB are also available. One thing to be aware of is that in Barcelona these need to be registered with the city. When they are registered they will be issued a license number. If you want to stay in an apartment rental in Barcelona, then we recommend picking one which has the license number on the listing.

If you would prefer to stay in an in apartment in Barcelona, then we recommend either Plum Guide  or  AirBnB .

Plum Guide carefully curate their listings so their options tend to be of a very high quality whilst still being available at a range of price points. See their listings for Barcelona here .

We’ve also used  AirBnB  all around the world, and they consistently have the most options to choose from. See their  listings for Barcelona here .

If you can’t find what you want from the above choices, or you want some new options to try out, we wrote a whole post on the  best alternatives to AirBnB  which you should check out!

How to Get Around Barcelona

Barcelona has an excellent public transport system, with regular metro, bus, and train options around the city. We found the metro to generally be the easiest and most convenient way to travel.

Tickets can be purchased either individually per ride, or you can buy a card valid for 10 rides. If you are taking more than four rides, a card is much better value. The card allow multiple people to travel (just put it through the ticket reader for each person) and unlike the single ticket allows you to change transport modes, say from a metro to bus (within an hour and 15 minutes of starting your journey for Zone 1 cards).

Barcelona Metro

From the airport, there are multiple ways to get into the city. You can take a metro, a train or a bus, all of which are reasonably priced. Depending on where you want to go in the city you should pick the best option for you. Taxis are also available, but are more expensive.

There are two more options for transport in Barcelona to consider.

1 – If you purchase a Barcelona Card , you get free travel on the metro, buses, trams and trains. This includes the airport metro and train.

2 – If you purchase a Go Barcelona Pass , it comes with one day access to the Hop On Hop Off Barcelona Bus Tour , which covers nearly every major tourist site in the city including nearly everywhere in this photography location guide.

More on the benefits and differences between these two options in the next section:

How to Save Money on Your Barcelona Visit

There are two main options for saving money in Barcelona that I’ll quickly cover here.

The Barcelona Card

First, the Barcelona Card . This is the official city card from the Barcelona Tourist Office , which is available in a standard version, and an express version. The normal version can be purchased for 3, 4 or 5 consecutive days, whilst the Express version is valid for two days. The normal version includes free access to a range of attractions, as well as discounted admission to a number of other attractions. It also includes free public transport.

The Express version comes with free transport for two days, as well as a range of discounted admission, but doesn’t include free entry. However, it is very competitively priced.

Barcelona Card

The Go Barcelona Pass

The Go Barcelona Pass is from the same people who make the London Pass that we love . It is more expensive than the Barcelona Card, however it includes free entry to a number of attractions on our photography locations guide including the Casa Mila , Casa Batlló , Recinte Modernista Sant Pau and Colonia Guell .

It also comes with a day of free hop on hop off bus transport , free Barcelona Walking tours , a free boat tour , and a number of other attractions.

If you are planning on visiting the attractions covered by the Barcelona Pass , it can quickly save you money. If you’re interested in the Go Barcelona Pass, Jess has written a comprehensive review and guide to using the Barcelona Pass which you should check out.

 by Laurence Norah

Should You Get the Go Barcelona Pass or Barcelona Card?

The answer to this question very much depends on what you want to see! It’s worth being aware that neither card offers free admission to the Sagrada Familia.

Overall though, you can save a lot of money with the Go Barcelona Pass , especially the three day version. The Barcelona Card is good for saving money on transport and for museums, however doesn’t include free admission to a lot of the key attractions like the Gaudi sights.

For a detailed comparison of the various cards available in Barcelona to help you decide which is best for you, check out our Barcelona card comparison post , and also see our full review of the Go Barcelona Pass .

I really like your article, I have been to Barcelona several times and I love doing travel photography in the “The Gothic Quarter”, it has an old atmosphere, it is great, I also like to take black and white photos and try to convey that I am in another time. For me it would be the most important point in his article about Barcelona. My personal work I do mainly in Cuba that is totally different from Spain but the imagination of the photographers leads us to enjoy photography anywhere. These are my photos. http://photographingcuba.com/photo-cuban-essays-by-louis-alarcon

Thanks for your very detailed article.

Frok the bottom of my heart thank you so much for your dedication in taking the time to explain everything about traveling to Barcelona, I can’t wait to read the other posts you recommended here. Thank you!!! Diani
