Quick & efficient

Quick, efficient service and the request for wheelchair access was picked up and confirmed quickly by Michelle Vincent. Haven’t received the e-ticket yet though but it does say 72 hours so should arrive soon….

Booked accommodation only for Tenerife…

Booked accommodation only for Tenerife through Travelup after seeing prices/availability on Tripadvisor. Paid small deposit and checked with hotel directly (after reading reviews on here which made me doubt the legitimacy of the company). Hotel confirmed they had my booking, and had no concerns over the Broker (HotelBeds) that TravelUp had booked through. Paid full balance 2 weeks before hols…and no issues with hotel on arrival. Reservation was there and fully paid already. So whilst I had concerns, they turned out to be unnecessary for me!

Great price compared to others

Great price compared to others. Easy to book. The only issue is that they refused to allow hyphens on my kids names on the site. I am not sure why that is, given the growing popularity of double-barrel names. I hope this will not pose a problem at the airport. Otherwise, great experience with the booking process.

All good so far

Never booked with Travel up before. Booking was easy. I got the confirmation with the reservation number immediately Flight was with BA. it was £100 cheaper that what BA showed me for the same flight (without any added extra) I was able to add that reservation to my BA account. So I am hoping the reservation is genuine. Fingers crossed. Hope I will able to fly without any issue in two months

Travel up is selling flights with Air…

Travel up is selling flights with Air Malta even though the airline has ceased to operate on the 30th of March 2024. There is another airline called KMalta in operation, but the airline logo on Travel up is definitely that of Air Malta. BE CAREFUL!!!

Does not include cabin luggage like makes out during the booking

I have just completed a booking with Travel Up. During the booking and what made me decided to go with Travel Up than its competitors on Sky Scanner is Travel Up gave the impression that a standard cabin bag (20kg or similar) was included in the price. After the booking it then stated hand luggage only. What is wrong with these companies and always trying to deceive people.

Shawn Sampson is an excellent and trust worthy travel agent. He has a big helping attitude and solved the problem with ease earlier today. I have bought tickets via TravelUp a few times over the years and never had any problem. I certainly recommend TravelUp to future travellers.

Frustrating calls to travel up when wishing you pay my outstanding balance. Apparently you can't pay from your ipad or mobile phone. Absolutely ridiculous. So three call and 1 hour later I have achieved nothing.

Really simple instructions

Really simple instructions, Booking process was completed really quickly. No problems encountered.

the online booking experience

the booking experience was good other than expecting to provide passport details and finding this was not required. It would have been nice to have known that prior to starting the booking, or even during it as it gave me an uneasy feeling.

Date of experience : April 17, 2024

Good morning, Mr. Brooke, Thank you for sharing your 4-star review. It is unfortunate to see that you had a challenging time while booking in order to feed the passport details as these days it has been kept mandate by the airlines to feed these details beforehand. However, we are glad you made the booking successfully. Your feedback is important to us as we take all the reviews seriously and use them as an opportunity to deliver the quality expected. We appreciate your patience. Regards, TravelUp

They just cancelled my return flight

They cancelled my return flight and requested a refund from the airline unknown to to me. Got to the airport 3 hours before my flight only to be told that my flight was cancelled. At that point no one was available to help, or just won't help. I was stranded, still stranded. Still trying to get some resolution. I was told that by them that the airline cancelled my flight. The airline said that the travel agency cancelled my flight and requested a refund which was processed and sent to them. I am deeply, totally unsatisfied with these company and will never use them again. In fact I will never book through a third party agency again. The saving is just not worth the headache. Never, never again!!!!!!

16 Airlines That Let You Book Flights Now and Pay Later

Planning a trip but don't want to pay for it all at once? These sites offer book-now, pay-later flights.

Orbon Alija/Getty Images

If you think a vacation is out of your reach, think again. Some airlines and online travel agencies have services that allow you to book a trip now and pay for it over time.

Affirm, PayPal, Uplift, and Klarna are among the book-now, pay-later services travel companies and airlines offer. Here, we break down the basics of these and airlines' own "BNPL" options so you can secure flights when the prices are lowest, even if you don't want to pay for them in full upfront.

Airlines Offering Book-now, Pay-later Flights

AeroMexico connects major U.S. cities to Latin American destinations like Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. The airline partners with Uplift to provide a monthly payment option. When you go to book a flight, you'll see an option to pay in monthly installments. Click through and you'll be asked for any personal information Uplift needs to process the loan.

You can also pay in installments through Klarna. Download the Klarna extension for Chrome or the app and you should see a pink "K" icon that will show you financing options. AeroMexico takes PayPal, which means you can use PayPal Credit to split up payments if you're approved.

Pay monthly for Air Canada flights and Air Canada Vacations packages with Uplift or PayPal Credit.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines partners with Uplift and Klarna to offer financing for flights.

Allegiant also uses Uplift and Klarna to provide payment plans. Select the Allegiant Pay option at checkout to choose financing through Uplift.

American Airlines

American Airlines offers several ways to buy now and pay later, including Klarna; PayPal Credit; Citi Flex Pay for select Citi cardholders; and Affirm, which has biweekly, monthly, and interest-free options but doesn't cover the cost of any flight extras, like luggage. American Airlines Vacations also gives you the option to pay monthly with Uplift.

Azul Airlines is a low-cost Brazilian airline that accepts payments through Uplift and PayPal.

Delta Air Lines

Delta offers PayPal Credit as a payment option, and you can pay using Affirm if you book your trip through Delta Vacations , a service for SkyMiles members that bundles flights, hotels, transportation, and activities.

One of the United Arab Emirates' two flag carriers, this airline partners with financing institutions Uplift and Klarna. You can also pay with PayPal Credit.

Frontier Airlines

Budget carrier Frontier Airlines lets you pay monthly installments through Uplift on purchases of $49 or more. If eligible, you will see the option at checkout. Frontier is also a Klarna retail partner.

KLM offers customers the option of holding a fare for 72 hours for a non-refundable fee. This is great if you find a fare that you want to book but need a few days to think about it. In addition, the airline takes PayPal Credit. This service is shown on the payment page as a "Bill Me Later" option, but directs you to your PayPal wallet.

Lufthansa has a list of payment methods on its website . Some monthly payment options are available specifically for residents of Brazil and Colombia. U.S. residents may pay monthly through PayPal Credit.

Porter Airlines

Porter , a Canadian airline, allows customers to use Uplift and PayPal to purchase flights across the U.S. and Canada.

Qatar Airways

Unless you're flying from Brazil, Brunei, or Kazakhstan, you can hold any Qatar Airways booking for up to 72 hours. How long prospective travelers can hold their Qatar flights depends on where they intend to fly to and from. The "Hold My Booking" option, available on the payment page, requires a non-refundable fee that doesn't go toward the price of your ticket. In most cases, you can also use PayPal Credit.

Southwest Airlines uses Uplift to break the cost of the flight up into fixed monthly payments. It also accepts PayPal Credit and Klarna.

Sunwing connects Canadian cities with destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. You can pay for plane tickets in monthly installments through Uplift.

United Airlines

Use Uplift, PayPal Credit, or Klarna to pay for United Airlines flights in monthly installments. The company also has a program called FareLock that allows you to pay a fee to hold a fare for three, seven, or 14 days before paying for it in full. If you decide not to buy the ticket, you forfeit the fee. This service is offered only on itineraries wholly operated by United Airlines and/or United Express.

Online Travel Agencies Offering Monthly Payment Options

Alternative airlines.

Any ticket booked through Alternative Airlines can be paid for in weekly, biweekly, or monthly installments with Uplift. The online travel agency markets itineraries by more than 600 airlines, and Uplift financing can be used for all of them. You can also split payments through Klarna.

CheapOair.com

CheapOair uses Affirm to offer customers a monthly payment option.

Funjet Vacations

Funjet Vacations uses Uplift to offer monthly payments for its flights and vacation packages.

Priceline uses Affirm to handle monthly payments. Select the "monthly payments" option on the secure billing step of the booking process and choose from three-, six-, or 12-month options. Alternatively, break it up into four payments over six weeks using Klarna.

How Buy-now, Pay-later Services Work

Airlines and travel agencies partner with BNPL services like the travel-specific Uplift or the more broadly available Affirm to offer monthly payment options. Some take payments through PayPal Credit and/or Klarna. Learn about the differences between these services and how they work.

Affirm allows customers to pay monthly or every two weeks. Terms can last up to 48 months for the largest loans, but more typically, they last up to a year. Interest rates vary by person, ranging from 0% to 36% APR, and are determined at the time of sign-up. A down payment and credit check might be required when you apply for a loan.

To use Affirm, you will need a phone number to use as an account login. The service is available only in the U.S. and Canada. Once you've created your account and gotten approved for a loan amount, you can set up auto-pay or pay each month via the app or website. You can find a full list of Affirm's travel partners, including airlines and accommodations, on its website .

PayPal Credit

This is a monthly payment option provided by travel companies that take PayPal. Typically, you'll choose PayPal as your payment method, and once you sign into your PayPal account, you can choose PayPal Credit . As of 2023, the variable purchase APR is about 28% for new accounts, but you can avoid paying interest altogether if you pay the loan off within six months. Loan applications are subject to credit approval.

Uplift is the leading pay-over-time financing service in the travel space, partnering with cruise lines, hotel chains, airlines, and more. Once you have selected a product, like your flight, you are shown a per-month rate based on the price of the items in your shopping cart. When you get to the payment page and choose monthly payment as your option, you will be asked for some personal details, and once you click "check rate," you will be told whether you've been approved. Uplift offers an APR of 0% to 36% based on your credit. You won't be penalized for paying late or early, and you can set up autopay so the money comes out of your account automatically.

Klarna breaks up the price of your ticket into monthly payments or four equal payments to be made two weeks apart. Add the Klarna extension to your Chrome browser or download the app on your phone, then book your flight as usual, selecting Klarna at checkout. The first payment will be due upfront. Klarna offers an APR of 0% to about 30%.

Using Fly Now Pay Later may sound appealing. After all, you only have to pay a deposit now to book your travel. However, there are several downsides to using Fly Now Pay Later — and similar deferred travel payment plans:

High interest rates: At the time of writing, Fly Now Pay Later charges between 9.99% and 29.99% APR on installments. You may be able to pay a lower interest rate by using a low- or no-interest credit card instead of Fly Now Pay Later for your purchase. Other BNPL options, including Uplift, could offer as low as 0% APR for certain eligible applicants.

A credit check is required: As part of the process of setting up an account, Fly Now Pay Later checks your credit to determine what interest rate to charge.

Requirement to use the app: Fly Now Pay Later has a splashy, well-designed website. However, you can't actually use the service on the website. Instead, you have to download and use the Fly Now Pay Later app.

Issues booking with the virtual card: For some types of travel expenses, Fly Now Pay Later issues travelers a virtual card that they then can use to book travel with a travel provider. Some travelers report having their virtual card declined by travel providers.

Lack of travel protections: You won't get travel protections offered by travel rewards credit cards — such as trip delay insurance, delayed baggage insurance, and trip cancellation insurance.

No rewards on travel purchases: As you'll be paying a travel provider through Fly Now Pay Later, you won't earn any rewards on the purchase. Additionally, Fly Now Pay Later only accepts payments through debit cards. So, you won't earn rewards when paying your balance unless you use a debit card that earns rewards.

Fly Now Pay Later is an appealing service for avoiding having to pay your travel expenses immediately. Just note that there are several downsides to doing so — everything from having to pay interest to losing out on credit card rewards and travel protections.

If you're OK with these tradeoffs and don't have a better alternative, using Fly Now Pay Later can be a good option. Just make sure to set realistic payment goals to balance minimizing interest and avoiding late payment fees.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Airlines must cough up cancellation cash and can no longer hide fees under new federal rule

A federal rule announced Wednesday will require airlines to quickly give cash refunds — without lengthy arguments — to passengers whose flights have been canceled or seriously delayed, the Biden administration said.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them — without headaches or haggling,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

The rule from the Transportation Department says passengers who decline other reimbursement like travel credits are to get cash refunds.

Image: Salt Lake City travellers

It applies when a flight is canceled or has a “significant change,” the administration said.A “significant change” includes when departure or arrival times are three or more hours different from the scheduled times for domestic flights or six hours for international flights, and when the airport is changed or connections are added, it said.

Passengers are also to get refunds when their baggage is 12 hours late in delivery for domestic flights.

The new rule comes after promises to hold airlines accountable after major disruptions that made travel hell for passengers, including the 2022 Southwest Airlines meltdown , which resulted in almost 17,000 significantly delayed or canceled flights and a missing baggage nightmare.

The Transportation Department said that the new rule means refunds are automatic and that "airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops."

Also announced Wednesday was a rule requiring airlines to more clearly disclose so-called junk fees upfront, such as surprise baggage or other fees, the department said.

It said that rule is expected to save fliers around $500 million a year.

The surprise fees are used so tickets look cheaper than they really are, and then fliers get the unwelcome surprise of fees on checked bags, carry-on bags or reservation changes — or even discounts that are advertised but apply to only part of the ticket price, officials said.

Airlines will also have to tell fliers clearly that their seats are guaranteed and that they don't have to pay extra to ensure they have seats for flights, according to the Transportation Department.

Airlines for America, an industry trade group, said that its member airlines “offer transparency and vast choice to consumers from first search to touchdown” and that they do offer cash refunds.

The 11 largest U.S. airlines returned $10.9 billion in cash refunds last year, an increase over $7.5 billion in 2019 but slightly down from $11.2 billion in 2022, the group said.

“U.S. airlines are providing more options and better services while ticket prices, including ancillary revenues, are at historic lows,” Airlines for America said.

Left out of the federal changes announced Wednesday are those involving "family seating fees," but the Transportation Department said in a statement that "DOT is planning to propose a separate rule that bans airlines from charging these junk fees."

Travelers have complained to the Transportation Department that children weren’t seated next to accompanying adults, including in some cases young children, department officials said last year.

Fees on bags specifically have made up an increasing amount of airline revenues, the Transportation Department said Wednesday in announcing the new rules.

A Transportation Department analysis found that airline revenue from baggage fees increased 30% from 2018 to 2022, while operating revenue — which is from the flights themselves — increased by only half that amount, the department said.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

  • Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
  • It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
  • Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Insider Today

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

Related stories

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."

Survey: More than 1 in 3 Americans will vacation into debt

Perhaps your summers hold fond memories of strolling along the beach, hiking mountains or trying new foods at a destination hundreds of miles from home. If so, are you planning to keep the travel streak going this year? Would you go into debt for it?

A new Bankrate survey found that only about half (53%) of Americans are planning a summer vacation in 2024. Of those who plan to travel this summer, more than 1 in 3 (36%) are willing to go into debt to pay for it.

On the other hand, another half (47%) of Americans plan to skip their summer vacation this year, citing affordability as the main issue (65%).

Travelers take on debt

More than one-third (36%) of aspiring summer vacationers said in the survey that they plan to use debt to pay for their travels.

This is par for the course when compared to another March 2024 Bankrate survey that asked Americans whether they’d go into debt to pay for fun this year.

In that survey, 27% said they’d be willing to go into debt to travel, 14% to dine out and 13% to attend a live entertainment event this year overall – not just in the summer.

Ted Rossman, Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst, cautions against racking up expensive credit card debt.

“I don’t want to tell people they can’t have any fun, but I do worry about taking on debt for discretionary purchases such as vacations, especially with credit card balances and rates at record highs,” he says.

Majority use credit cards

Credit cards are summer travelers’ preferred payment method – 62% will use a credit card for at least some of their trip expenses.

Forty-three percent of summer travelers plan to use a credit card that they pay in full, and 26% plan to use a card and carry the balance over multiple billing cycles. Some people are doing both.

Interestingly, a January 2024 Bankrate survey found that, of the 44% of credit cardholders carrying debt from month to month, 2 in 3 cardholders try to maximize rewards.

If you can pay your balance in full, a travel credit card is a great way to earn while you spend and put rewards toward future trips.

Using travel credit cards can also help you to reap additional travel benefits like no foreign transaction fees or trip cancellation insurance.

However, even with these rewards, it’s still worth considering the cost of carrying a balance to pay for travel.

“While the travel industry has rebounded from the chaos that immediately followed the pandemic, I’m sure there will still be plenty of delays and cancellations this summer,” Rossman says.

“It’s a good idea to pay with a credit card that offers generous travel insurance benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance and stipends if your flight is delayed or your luggage is lost. Rental car insurance is another helpful benefit included on many cards.”

Domestic travel is most popular

Vacations are an important part of many people’s lives, whether at all-inclusive resorts or national parks. According to the survey, 53% of U.S. adults are planning a summer vacation this year.

Thirty-six percent of Americans plan to travel domestically, 15% plan to travel internationally and 12% plan to take a staycation (respondents could choose more than one option).

Another 18% don’t know or are not sure of their plans yet.

More than four in 10 (43%) of the staycationers are also planning a domestic or international trip, so roughly 7% of U.S. adults will make a staycation their only summer vacation.

If you’re facing cost concerns, making the most of local experiences may be easier on your wallet.

Younger Americans are more likely to get away – and use debt to pay for it

When school’s out for summer, students, young parents and other young people might be more likely to jet out of town than older generations.

Sixty percent of Gen Zers (ages 18-27) and 61% of millennials (ages 28-43) are planning summer vacations, versus 50% of Gen Xers (ages 44-59) and 44% of boomers (ages 60-78).

Young people are also more willing to take on debt to pay for their 2024 summer vacation:

• Gen Z: 42%

• Millennials: 47%

• Gen X: 31%

• Boomers: 22%

High earners and city dwellers travel most

When you scroll on social media this summer, you might notice two types of friends filling your feed with travel photos – those who earn more money and those who live in cities.

Nearly 3 in 4 (74%) of survey respondents with annual household incomes of $100,000 or more are planning a summer vacation.

That’s considerably more than the 68% earning between $80,000 and $99,999, 61% earning between $50,000 and $79,999 and just 39% earning under $50,000 who are planning a summer vacation.

As for where these summer travelers live:

• 61% of people who live in a city are planning a summer vacation

• 50% of those who live in a suburb

• 48% of those who live in a town

• 44% of those who live in a rural area

Nearly three in 10 skip vacation

The top explanation among those who are not planning summer vacations, by a wide margin, is that they can’t afford it (65%).

Even though inflation seems to be cooling off, the Fed still hasn’t lowered rates. Thus, credit card rates are still high, and Americans continue to feel the pain of higher prices on everyday spending.

A new credit card might help you fight inflation. But many Americans appear to be feeling wary of whether they can afford luxuries like a summer trip.

Among those not planning summer vacations, Gen Xers were most likely to say they can’t afford it (67%), followed by millennials (62%), boomers (61%) and Gen Zers (53%).

In 2023, 58% of Americans also said they couldn’t afford it. Other reasons for not planning a summer vacation include the following:

• 24% are not interested in taking any vacations currently (versus 23% in 2023)

• 13% said their health or age (versus 15% in 2023)

• 11% said it’s too much of a hassle

• 10% can’t take time off work (versus 11% in 2023)

• 10% said too many family obligations (versus 13% in 2023)

• 4% are planning a vacation for another time (versus 11% in 2023)

• 1% said their desired destination is too crowded (versus 23% in 2023)

• 9% said it was another reason (versus 7% in 2023)

Rossman advises “taking advantage of any credit card rewards, airline miles and hotel points you’ve socked away.”

“Maybe even sign up for a new credit card with a generous sign-up bonus that you can put toward your getaway,” he said. “Finally, if going somewhere isn’t feasible this year, at least take some time off to relax and recharge close to home.”

Better debt than credit card

If you’re planning to take on debt to pay for a summer vacation, putting it on your credit card might be an expensive decision.

That’s because credit card interest rates are high – currently averaging almost 21%. For every day that you carry a balance, you’ll pay interest on those vacation expenses (and you’ll also pay interest on your interest).

A word of caution that it’s not the best idea to spend beyond your means for a vacation. You could avoid going into debt for a big trip by doing things like saving, travel hacking with credit card rewards and looking for deals.

If you still want to borrow money, here are three forms of debt that might be less costly than credit card debt:

• Personal loan. The best personal loans can come with lower interest rates than credit cards. If you need a large chunk of change to pay for travel expenses up front, you could apply for a personal loan. Having good credit may increase your chances of being approved and getting a lower rate. Just keep in mind that you’ll still be paying interest as you make payments over time.

• Buy now, pay later (BNPL) service. You could use a BNPL app like Affirm, Afterpay, PayPal in 4, Perpay or Sezzle to make interest-free payments over time on large purchases like flights or hotel stays. You’d be joining the 8% of survey respondents planning to use a BPNL service to pay for summer travel.

• Zero-percent intro APR credit card

Applying for a 0% APR credit card could buy you time to make purchases that you pay off later, interest free. Just consider whether you can pay off the balance by the time the introductory period ends – usually within 12 to 21 months. After that, the card’s regular APR will kick in and you’ll start racking up interest. Also remember that applying for a new credit card can temporarily ding your credit.

Date of experience : 17 April 2024

When it comes to government planes and political trips, who pays for a president’s campaign travel?

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s no simple matter to move the commander in chief from point A to B, and it’s even more complicated when the president is seeking a second term.

President Joe Biden recently spent three days in Pennsylvania , a pivotal state in the 2024 campaign, and he plans to be in Virginia and Florida this coming week. The Democratic incumbent is seeking an edge over Republican Donald Trump as he ramps up his travels around the country.

Here’s a look at how much it costs and who pays the bill during the campaign season.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It’s not cheap to fly the president’s fleet.

The White House uses Sikorsky helicopters known as Marine One when the president is aboard, as well as custom Boeing 747s that are immediately recognizable as the iconic humpback Air Force One. (Sometimes the president uses a more modest modified 757 if his destination is nearby or if a runway isn’t long enough to accommodate the bigger plane.)

Marine One costs between $16,700 and almost $20,000 per hour to operate, according to Pentagon data for the 2022 budget year. Air Force One is even more expensive: roughly $200,000 per hour.

But those figures only scratch the surface of the real cost. There also are military cargo planes that travel ahead of the president to make sure his armored limousines are in place, not to mention the enormous security apparatus that follows the president everywhere.

New aircraft are in the works because the current versions are decades old. Sikorsky is producing 23 updated helicopters to serve as Marine One. Boeing is building two new Air Force One planes , and they are scheduled to be finished by 2028. According to the Pentagon, the planes will come with all enhancements, including “a mission communication system,” a “self-defense system” and even “autonomous baggage loading.”

FILE - President Joe Biden speaks during a campaign event in Scranton, Pa., April 16, 2024. Rarely a day goes without Biden mentioning insulin prices, constantly touting a $35 insulin price cap for Americans with diabetes who are on Medicare. But many people benefiting from the price cap were already paying far less than that for insulin. Others were already Biden supporters. That raises questions about how whether the issue can be as effective as the president believes. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

WHO PAYS FOR THE TRAVEL?

When the president flies for political purposes, the campaign is supposed to pay the bill. But during an election year, the line between governing and campaigning can be fuzzy.

For example, Biden held an official event Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where he announced his proposal for higher tariffs on steel imported from China. The event, however, was a not-so-subtle opportunity for the president to rub shoulders with union members who are critical to his reelection, and he jabbed at Trump in his remarks. (At one point Biden joked that the former president was “busy right now,” a reference to the hush money trial that recently got underway in New York.)

It’s up to the White House counsel’s office to figure out what percentage of the president’s travels are campaign related. That determines how much the federal government should be reimbursed by the Biden campaign. Sometimes the calculations aren’t straightforward, such as when the White House adds an official event to an otherwise political trip.

Norm Eisen, a White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama, said both Republicans and Democrats have usually hewed closely to regulations.

“We had a set of rules on how to do the allocations,” he said. “They’re intricate, and we stuck to them.”

No matter what, taxpayers end up on the hook for most of the cost. Campaigns do not pay for all the Secret Service agents and the rest of the security apparatus. In fact, they usually only cover the cost of Air Force One passengers who are flying for explicitly political purposes — sort of like buying a ticket on a particularly exclusive private jet.

HOW MUCH HAS BIDEN PAID?

Biden’s campaign and his joint fundraising committee have been stockpiling travel cash in an escrow account maintained by the Democratic National Committee. From January 2023 until the end of last month, they deposited nearly $6.5 million.

Some of that money goes to general campaign logistics, such as staff expenses and advance work. The account is also used to reimburse the federal government for official aircraft used to transport the president, the first lady, the vice president and the second gentleman when they travel for the reelection effort.

FILE - President Joe Biden boards Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., April 12, 2024, enroute to New Castle, Del. So far, not much money has found its way back to the U.S. Treasury. As of the latest data available, just $300,000 has been provided.

It’s safe to assume that Biden’s campaign will end up forking over much more than that once the campaign is over. Trump’s team reimbursed the federal government nearly $4.7 million for travel expenses during the 2020 race.

But Biden probably won’t have trouble covering his bills. His campaign and the DNC had more than $192 million in cash on hand at the end of March.

AP White House Correspondent Zeke Miller contributed to this report.

Airlines Must Now Pay You Back for Delays and Cancellations

No matter the reason, including weather or technical issues..

Airline Refund Rule for Delays and Cancellations Department of Transportation Info

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)  has issued a final rule requiring airlines to offer cash refunds for cancellations, significant delays or changes in flight itineraries. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that under the new standards, airlines must refund passengers in cash or the original form of payment rather than vouchers, no matter the reason for the flight disruption, including weather or technical issues.

This rule stipulates that refunds are due if a domestic flight’s timing changes by three or more hours, or six hours for international flights. Additional circumstances that qualify for refunds include changes in departure or arrival airports and the introduction of extra connections in the itinerary. Moreover, if airlines fail to provide paid services such as Wi-Fi or if baggage delivery is delayed beyond 12 hours after domestic flights, as well as up to 30 hours after international flights, passengers are entitled to a refund of those specific fees.
