What a fantastic place to get your bike serviced. I took my Elliptigo in for service on Friday evening and the owner personally dropped off my bike Saturday evening on his way home. All I can say is above and beyond Steve went to make me happy as I bike almost everyday and he was slammed, but got me in. I appreciate all the service you have given me. Even during the whacky hours and distancing necessary during a pandemic, the owner worked alone, but gave us a lot of personal attention and guidance. Loving our Roscoe 7's!

Got hit by a car yesterday at 4 pm with my dear carbon emonda, went to the hospital, brought the bike in to trek granger, and was back on the rode by 4 pm today. Unreal!! Cannot say enough good things about this store and team - Jeff was hands down the best bike mechanic I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He really gave me the boost I needed after my wreck, and I will forever be grateful. Go trek granger! You guys really are making it better with bikes!

My husband and I have been researching bikes for about 6 months. We woke up later today than we wanted but still had our plan to actually go too bike shops and talk with someone. I rushed around getting ready but did not put too much effort in myself. My plan was to buy some bikes, I mean who cares what I look like. . A man approached us he asked what we were looking for, we told him we were wanting to start biking. He said have you heard there's a bike pandemic! He told us his bikes were out of our price range they were in the $2000 range. Not sure why this idiot decided we couldn't afford one of his bikes. We never told him what our price point was. Very rude he was a bald headed man with a nose ring or something. If this is his shop he should be ashamed of himself. I live at the Toscano Park Residents and wanted to buy a bike close to my Apartment. I wanted a nice bike that I can take to Fort Lauderdale Florida to my condo where I spend my winters at. I wanted a bike that would last. Fortunately for me I didn't give up. I drove a couple extra miles to Osceto House Of Bikes. They were more than Happy to talk with me give me all the pros and cons of different bikes. Let us go for test rides. My husband and I spent $4500.00 today on two really nice bikes. We couldn't be happier! Cannot wait to ride by Trek and Show off our very expensive bikes that he didn't think we could afford! Never judge a book by its cover and do not buy a bike at Trek if you want to be treated right. Oh and we are heading back there Monday to purchase a bike rack for our Tahoe and a standing rack with locks for our patio.

Trek Bicycle Store rolling into Mishawaka's Heritage Square

Steve Peterson wants to immerse area cycling enthusiasts in the Trek Bike experience.

Think about an Apple store. Apple operates its brick-and-mortar locations as a one-stop shop for its merchandise. All Apple, all the time. Peterson, who's owned and operated Elkhart Bicycle Shop since 2008, wants to do the same thing for bikes.

Peterson will be the local owner of a Trek Bike concept store coming to Heritage Square in Mishawaka later this spring called Trek Bicycle Store Granger. He's been working with Trek for the last 18 months to make it happen.

"The Trek business model is really starting to focus on single-line product because you can do a better job," Peterson said. "It's like I said, if you go into a Harley-Davidson dealership you don't see other products. If you go into a Lexus dealership, you don't see other product.

"It's a business model that works very well in high-end retail and that's what Trek product is. It's really aimed towards those more higher-end clientele."

Renovation of the roughly 3,500-square-foot store around the corner from Soho Japanese Bistro and across from Eddie Bauer is underway. Peterson hopes to be open in about six weeks (cycling season is underway in our area, despite the abysmal weather recently), depending on just how quickly the contractor can complete work.

Once it's done, the Trek Bike store will be only the second of its kind in the state. There's another one in Schererville, Ind., almost two hours away near the Illinois state line.

Peterson expects enough showroom space to hold between 50 and 60 bicycles. There will also be a full line of Bontrager accessories — helmets, clothing, shoes, parts, etc. — and a service department for any bike, not just a Trek.

"It's going to be a bright, cheery store," Peterson said. "It's going to be full of employees that are passionate about what they do. A lot of what we do for clients is truly help them solve their problem. If the problem is they want a new bike or want a new helmet, whatever it is, we spend the time with them to understand their wants and their needs."

Prices on bicycles will range anywhere between $300 and $12,000, Peterson said. Needless to say, I'm planning to head back after opening to see what kind of bike fetches the price of a nice used car.

Expanding is something Peterson has been hoping to do for a couple of years.

Going with a Trek-only store seemed natural since he already had a strong working relationship with the Waterloo, Wis.-based company. Peterson sells only Trek bikes at his store in Elkhart, which will remain open, and mentioned they'll likely transition it into a concept store in either 2018 or 2019.

"They've been the best company that I've ever dealt with in retail as far as working with me," Peterson said. "They truly are a business partner. They're not just, 'Hey, build a fancy bike shop and we'll fill it full of bikes.' They've worked with me on everything from the design and the layout to acquisition of computers and tools, everything."

Moving into St. Joseph County has always been the target for Peterson when it came to expansion.

Upgrades both in South Bend and countywide in terms of bicycle trails and paths played a role. There's recently been a push and fundraising by the nonprofit group Granger Paths to keep building up bike paths in Granger specifically.

Peterson is, naturally, enthusiastic about the project. Same goes for Broad Reach Retail Partners, which manages the Mishawaka shopping center near Gumwood Road and Indiana 23.

"We just think it's great synergy with the center," said Mike Castellitto, vice president-director of operations at Broad Reach. "There's local bike trails or bike routes along Gumwood Road that the bikers use. It fits in well with our tenant mix at the shopping center. We think it'll attract more traffic to the center and have a lot of synergy with the other uses there."

Camellia Cosmetics up for sale

Sticking with our Heritage Square theme this week, Camellia Cosmetics is looking for new leadership.

Rebecca Maalouf, who's owned and operated the store in the center since it opened in 2004, plans to move on from the cosmetics boutique. She's not necessarily getting out of the beauty industry altogether, but does want to pursue it from a different angle.

"My plan would be definitely I want to focus specifically on over-50 beauty, women over 50 and their beauty options," Maalouf said. "That's really not where this store is or the best place to take this store. I guess that also figured into my decision because I do have that idea on the horizon and I have dabbled in it."

Maalouf added that her youngest child is about to graduate from high school, and upcoming lifestyle changes as a result are another factor in the decision. She hopes to find a buyer in short order.

Last week she had three meetings, although none have reached the formal stage. Maalouf said previous experience with the beauty industry or in retail would be ideal in a potential new owner.

Camellia Cosmetics previously operated in Eddy Street Commons before moving out of that location in 2013.
