Vacations for Over 50 Singles: How and Where to Travel

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

Traveling alone can be intimidating, especially if you’ve reached your 50s and have never traveled alone. I took my first solo trip when I was 35, fell in love with travel, and never looked back.

Planning trips for singles over 50 can be overwhelming. Where do you go? Who do you go with? And what should you be adding to your travel itinerary on a day-to-day basis?

I’m here to help you with ideas on how to plan vacations for singles over 50. If you’re not quite there yet, be sure to check out my travel tips for singles over 40 .

You may be heading abroad by yourself, but there’s no need to feel alone in this venture. I’ve been doing it for years and encountered the most incredible experiences because of it.

Here’s what you need to know about the best trips for singles over 50.

Top Tips for Vacations for Over 50 Singles

There are a variety of challenges that present themselves when you’re traveling as a single person over the age of 50. Here are a few travel options that could make the whole experience less stressful.

1. Join Organized Travel Groups for Singles Over 50

Top 3 organized tour companies for over 50 solo travelers.

#1 TOP PICK

singles travel groups

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Explore ✔️ Dedicated Offers for Over 50s ✔️ Small Group Tours ✔️ No single supplement

G Adventures ✔️ No single supplement ✔️ Free time in itineraries ✔️ Evening Group Meals

Encounters Travel ✔️ Private & Small Group Focus ✔️ 20 Years Experience ✔️ Range of Tours

Organizing an entire trip alone can be stressful if you’re not the planning type. But the good news is that you don’t have to do it alone.

You may not have to do it at all. For those who are not great planners, joining already organized travel groups for singles over 50 is a great way to go.

There are plenty of companies that allow you to book all-inclusive trips. Flights, accommodation, activities, and sometimes even your meals are included. This takes all the pressure off of you.

I have traveled solo with G Adventures and Explore several times and always had a great experience. The age range of attendees is very broad but single travelers account for the majority of people who travel with both companies.

G Adventures does not charge a single supplement, makes it easy to get your own room and is particularly focussed on female solo travelers.

Explore has a dedicated section on its website for Over 50s solo holidays that covers everything you need to know about its most popular solo trips for this age group.

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

Intrepid Travel has more than 1000 itineraries and covers over 100 countries. They also have different comfort levels for their trips – Basix, Comfort or Original which is a combination of the two.

Again, if you are willing to share your room, there is no single supplement and the cost for a private room is relatively small.

Intrepid says that about half of the people on their trips are traveling solo . Like Explore, they have a dedicated section for solo travelers on their website and versions of their trips designed specifically for singles for popular destinations like Costa Rica and Peru.

Encounters Travel is an Australian based travel company that designs its trips exclusively for solo travelers. One of their key points of difference is that Encounter Travel promises small groups of travelers of similar age groups.

For American solo travelers, Overseas Adventure travel focuses on solo travelers over 50. As you may have guessed from the name, many of their trips are quite adventurous. However, they provide detailed information on the trips and the fitness levels required to ensure you find the trip that works for you.

This company puts aside a certain number of single spaces for each of its tours. These spaces mean that solo travelers either aren’t charged for a single supplement or it is at a discount. Overseas Adventure Travel has a roommate matching service if those spaces are filled.

If you want to travel with other females and have an adventure, check out Wild Women Expeditions . This company focuses on destinations that may be daunting for a female solo traveler such as Tanzania or getting to say Alaska and getting around. The focus of their itineraries is outdoor adventures.

And Just You travel is specifically designed for singles travel.

2. Plan a Group Trip

Being single doesn’t mean you have to travel alone. Plenty of people well into their 50s are keen to explore the world and looking for a travel buddy. If reaching out to your friends proves unsuccessful, venture into an online community.

These often come in the form of Facebook groups that allow you to chat about your travel plans and meet up with others who are planning the same thing. Three that I recommend are:

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls About the Globe – Solo Female Travel
  • Solo Female Travelers – First FB Group for female solo travelers

3. Travel Alone

Traveling alone comes with many perks. The main one is that you never have to compromise. Do what you want to do, when you want to do it. And if you decide you’d like to extend your trip by a week or two, or even a couple of months, you won’t interrupt anyone else’s schedule.

It’s actually one of the most liberating things to do. Whether you decide on a solo spa break or an adventurous year-long globe-trotting trip, you will end it feeling fulfilled.

Where to Travel in Your 50s

With a little extra cash in your pockets than you had in your 20s, traveling in your 50s can be even more exciting than when you were younger. You can finally get to all the places you intended to go to.

If you’ve been to all the destinations on top of your bucket list, I’ve got a few more for you to consider.

After all, your tastes change as you get older. A full moon party in Thailand might not be the epic adventure you once envisioned, but there’s plenty more on offer. So here are some of the best 50s-friendly travel destinations.

You might enjoy reading my article on the best Florida singles resorts.

Japan is famed for its traditional arts, distinctive gardens, and numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you’re visiting to see the awe-inspiring cherry blossoms in full bloom, visiting during April is a must.

These are a few of the top things to do in Japan.

Take Part in a Tea Ceremony

A tea ceremony in Kyoto is all you need for a relaxing start to your trip. Learn about traditional Japanese teas and the process used to make them during the ceremony. Once the tea master has demonstrated matcha tea preparation (a powdered green tea), you’ll make it for yourself.

You’ll also learn about the spiritual benefits of drinking matcha tea while you savor every last drop.

Scenic Train Ride

Take a scenic train ride alongside the Hozu River. The views are spectacular as you pass through mountains in the Hozukyo Ravine. During the trip you’ll get a chance to hop off and sail down the Hozu River in a boat, providing you with views from a completely different angle.

Taking a train through Japan is possibly the best and most relaxing way to enjoy the country’s incredible scenery. Some other fantastic options in Japan are to spend a day in Tokyo , visit beautiful Kanazawa or take the Nakasendo Trail .

2. Antarctica

Antarctica may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of vacation destinations for your 50s, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a desirable option.

Take a Cruise

Take a voyage through the icy water of the Antarctic to experience what few others have. These voyages are usually all-inclusive, which takes a lot of strain out of the planning. Most of them allow for a stop off at some point, so you won’t just witness the ice, you’ll experience it first hand.

You’re likely to see a myriad of wildlife you won’t find anywhere else in the world and few have ventured to see. The Antarctic holds a variety of unique adventures that, in your 50s, you have to experience.

⇒ There are some other destinations that I have visited that I think are particularly good for solo travelers over 50 due to their friendliness and safety levels. Some of my favourites are New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada, Medellin in Colombia, Verbier in Switzerland , Iceland , Riga in Latvia , Edinburgh and Glasgow , Bali , Nepal and Melbourne , Sydney and Perth in Australia.

3. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, making it one of the best places to go for wildlife viewing. But if you’re still young at heart, it’s also one of the best places to go for a heart-pumping adventure.

See the Natural Beauty of the La Fortuna Area

Trek along the trails of La Fortuna , visit an aboriginal village, hike over lava fields, and come to the best viewing point in the La Fortuna area. Take in the stunning views of the cascading 70-metre high waterfall and make your way across a suspension bridge.

All the while taking in the wonderful diversity of the lush vegetation surrounding you. This is certainly an experience for nature-lovers, although most of Costa Rica is.

Spend a Night in the Jungle

Taking a tour of the jungle at night is even more exciting than it is during the daytime. All of your senses are heightened. Hear sounds of the nocturnal creatures, and maybe even spot a few glowing eyes in the darkness.

You’ll venture deep into the rainforests of Rainmaker Park where species that were previously thought to be extinct are being rediscovered. Your naturalist guide will point out snakes, frogs, salamanders, lizards, owls, birds, and many other wonderful nocturnal creatures.

Zipline Through the Rainforest

For those of you who are still hungry for adventure and an adrenaline rush, ziplining through the rainforests of Costa Rica has to be on your itinerary.

To get there you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through volcanoes, plantations, and the jungle, taking in all Costa Rica has biodiversity.

You’ll then zip-line through the jungle, seeing waterfalls and stopping off at the Arenal Volcano hot springs along the way.

4. Scotland

A colourful history has left Scotland with castles and military fortresses all over the country. It has also kept up with the times and has some fantastic food (and of course whiskey) and some great spas.

If you’re ready to explore thick woodlands, rolling farmlands, and a destination with a fascinating story, Scotland is waiting for you.

Take a Cruise on the Caledonian Canal

Ready to explore the home of the Loch Ness Monster? The Caledonian Canal is a tranquil body of water that provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Taking a cruise on the Caledonian Canal provides you with views of the beautiful Great Glen, as well as long-standing Aldourie Castle.

Explore Underground Vaults

If you like to dive head-first into a destination’s history, exploring the vaults under Edinburgh’s Old Town is a must. These vaults were built in the 18th century and held murderers and witches.

You’ll even see the location where “witches” were persecuted all those years ago.

edinburgh-vaults

If you like all things dark and creepy or are fascinated by the customs of years gone by, this is a tour you cannot pass up in Scotland.

Visit Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular fortifications in the country. The castle has been around for over 3000 years and helped shape the history of Scotland. Take a tour of the castle to learn about its hidden mysteries.

A guide will teach you everything you need to know about the history of the castle and take you to the must-see locations in the fortress. After that, you can set out to explore for yourself.

Scotland is a great place to hire a car as a solo traveler and explore less visited areas like Ayrshire or Dumfries and Galloway. Glasgow is a super friendly town and a great spot for single travelers. I would highly recommend having at least 7 days or 10 days in Scotland.

Kyoto evokes a regal ambiance as it was Japan’s capital for over a thousand years. Here you’ll find the Imperial Palace and Park, Nijo Castle, Kiyomizu Temple, and the Temple of the Golden Pavilion.

Central Kyoto makes a good base for exploring the rest of the city. But, if you want a more feudal-era vibe, stay in Higashiyama-ku. This district is home to narrow lanes fringed with old pottery shops, tea houses, and restaurants serving kaiseki course meals.

While in Kyoto, check out  Shiraume , a traditional Japanese inn by the Shirakawa River.

3. Napa Valley, California

There’s much more to do in the wine country besides wine tastings. This eco-friendly destination abounds with Michelin-starred restaurants, indulgent spa experiences, modern art galleries, picturesque towns, and miles upon miles of lush vineyards.

All-inclusive vacations in Napa  often include tours of elite wineries amidst breathtaking landscapes. The region also has upscale accommodations, including  Auberge du Soleil , set in 33 acres of olive groves and oak woodland.

About two miles from the city center is the bustling port district of Leith, where you’ll find some of the  best resorts for singles over 50 . Be sure to check out the luxurious floating hotel  Fingal . For something chic but lowkey, consider staying at the  Holiday Inn Express® Edinburgh – Leith Waterfront .

5. Corfu, Greece

Corfu  is the ideal destination for history buffs, being the site of numerous conquests, historical landmarks, and iconic monuments. The weather is excellent all year round, the beaches are stunning, and the food is phenomenal.

6. The Bahamas

The Bahamas  is the quintessential tropical paradise, with miles of crystal-clear waters, pink-sand coves, undisturbed wildlife, and deserted palm-fringed islands. The country is uniquely beautiful and quirkily fascinating. After all, it’s the only place in the world where you can swim with pigs.

The capital Nassau is a popular cruise ship stop. It’s famous for its coral reefs, snorkeling opportunities, and pastel-colored colonial buildings. One of the  best resorts for singles over 50  is  Small Hope Bay Lodge . This hotel is an eco-friendly, all-inclusive property on the pristine Andros Island.

If you’re feeling a little fancy, check out the adults-only  Sandals Emerald Bay . This sprawling resort features 11 restaurants, a golf course, and a half-acre private pool with a fire pit.

7. Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. It’s home to volcanic beaches, abundant marine life, idyllic fishing villages, and dense rainforests. And you’ll never run out of outstanding accommodations in St Lucia. Discover vast all-inclusive resorts and intimate adults-only hotels.

If you don’t mind splurging, check out the luxurious garden-by-the-sea property  East Winds . For those seeking to recharge, there’s  BodyHoliday .

This spa resort includes a complimentary daily massage, body wrap, or facial in its all-inclusive package. It also hosts a solo retreat every September, an excellent opportunity to connect with other single travelers.

8. Barceló Bávaro Beach, Dominican Republic

Located on the white sand coast of Punta Cana,  Barceló Bávaro Beach  features over 500 rooms and suites with side or front sea vistas. It’s home to four restaurants, two bars, a theater, multiple pools, a spa, and a 24-hour casino.

Barceló Bávaro Beach is an adults-only, all-inclusive accommodation. But what makes it one of the  best resorts for singles over 50  is the array of activities it offers.

If you love to get active, there are watersports, golf, bowling, and excursions to nearby attractions. The resort also holds an annual Singles Week, for solo travelers seeking to socialize with others.

9. Lake Austin Spa Resort, Austin, Texas

Set on the shores of Lake Austin in the scenic Texas Hill County,  Lake Austin Spa Resort  is the perfect place to escape the bustle of the city.

The property only has 40 rooms, so it’s intimate and exclusive. Included in the all-inclusive deal are culinary demos, artist talks, sunset lake cruises, and water activities such as stand-up paddle boarding.

The package also covers three meals a day, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, and access to the spa facility and pools.

All-Inclusive Vacations for Singles over 50: What You Need To Know!

trip for singles over 50

Exploring the world as a solo traveler may sound intimidating, especially if you’re in your 50s or 60s and have never traveled alone before. However, solo travel for single people in their 50s and above is just as fascinating as in their 20s or 30s. So whether you choose small group tours catering to singles or venture out as solo travelers alone, there is a great place just for you when you do the proper research.

Solo travel has become more popular, and many travel companies accommodate this newer class of older travelers.

As a matter of fact, singles vacations for people in their 50s are among the most widespread travel demographics. The number of people becoming single in their 50s or older is massive. Various studies have found that boomers represent the age group that is most likely to divorce. Single seniors are rising, and not having a travel partner should not keep you from exploring your ideal destination.

Apart from divorces, numerous other changes happen during midlife, including—health, career, and relationship changes. Going on an inclusive vacation at such times may help you deal with stressful life changes. In addition, there are singles cruises and singles getaway groups that help you decide on a popular destination and that offer the best options.

Why Solo Travel?

Maybe you’re experiencing one or more of these situations. A solo vacation may set things right:

Are you newly single, either by divorce or loss?

Solo travel may help you make a comeback by allowing you to meet interesting people, make new friends, and form meaningful relationships.

Are you going through a midlife crisis?

Travel alone, explore sensational places, learn new things everywhere you go, indulge in different cultures, see magnificent sunrises and sunsets, and feel the beauty of nature without any influence from others.

Is your significant other not interested in traveling with you?

There is a saying—” I water you. You water me. We grow together.”

Two people love and marry each other so they can grow together. With that said, if your partner prefers staying in bed and resting over traveling with you, that is okay, and it doesn’t have to hold you back.

Travel alone, see the world and return refreshed to your significant other.

Do you have health issues?

One of the biggest reasons why people suffer from constant health issues over and over again is stress. Stress is a major contributor to most of your health concerns, and traveling alone can help break the stress and maybe even get rid of it completely.

Has your work life become dull, or have you retired early?

Waking up every day, doing the daily chores, finishing off work, and going back to bed to repeat everything the next day should not be called life. It’s life only when you’re living it to the fullest.

If your work is tedious or if you do not work anymore, the best way to get a rush of excitement back in your life is by traveling alone.

Traveling for older people is so much more than how the young ones perceive it. It is not simply just traveling, moving here and there with a backpack, having fun.

For older people, traveling emphasizes enrichment and education, comfort, great food, tranquility, the beauty of nature, magnificent animals, and activities that push our boundaries.

Benefits of Solo Travel over 50

We all need a tiny fraction of our daily lives to figure out things, make certain decisions, explore our own minds and bodies, discover our inner powers, and experience life better.

Traveling solo can rip off a lot of stress and help you find answers to questions you have had for a long time. But, other than that, traveling solo can be beneficial in so many ways:

You are completely free

Traveling with others means making plans that everyone accepts. However, simply going around checking out local museums, landmarks, restaurants, and other tourist attractions can be challenging when you want to do other out-of-the-box things on your vacation.

When you travel solo, you can be anywhere you want and do anything you like.

trip for singles over 50

Meet new people

Traveling alone can allow you to bring something valuable to your life—new friends, independent knowledge, and inspiring locals. Here are some Facebook Groups where you can meet like-minded female solo travelers.

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls About the Globe – Solo Female Travel
  • Solo Female Travelers – First FB Group for female solo travelers

Learn more about yourself

In the modern world, everyone is bombarded by stimulation. Either they fall towards connectivity to others or the Internet. As a result, it is infrequent to get the time or chance to sit with ourselves and learn what we want.

Solo travelers have the opportunity to be on their own in a new place and learn about things about themselves that they would have never learned with distractions and constant buzzing.

You step outside your comfort zone .

When traveling with friends, you often fix travel issues together. Something seems wrong? The solution comes right up after a bit of chat. On the other hand, traveling solo means you’ll have to learn to get out of problematic situations independently.

This provides you with an opportunity to learn problem-solving tricks, dealing with pressure, and developing confidence and self-belief.

It may make you happier than ever before

Traveling alone has the potential to increase your happiness levels. When you’re traveling alone, you’re away from every person from who you expect ‘joy.’

When you do not expect anything from anyone, you automatically feel free and joyful with whatever is around you.

Bottom Line

Traveling alone at 50 can be the most exciting thing in the world for you. With age, you have more experience with yourself, a taste for better things in life, and maturity that lets you feel good about the little things in life. Sixty percent of retirees intend to become Senior Travelers when they retire. There are many ways to connect with other singles, like online groups and singles group trips.

Traveling in your 50s as a solo traveler has the potential to offer you a wonderful experience. So do not back off this incredible time, and book your vacation today!

Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

The world's a big place - where are you yet to explore? Our  Cultural Discovery  group adventure trips allow you to discover a new destination beyond just its tourist attractions - you'll learn about its history and culture through visits to historic sites and experiences, as well as meeting, and often even staying with, local people or tribes. Wherever you choose to go, you'll be made to feel welcome and truly at home with friendly like-minded people, and all at a pace that suits you. Cuba is one of our most popular destinations, particularly for solo travellers over 50, and it's so easy to see why. Whether you take our faster-paced  Cuba Libre!  group adventure holiday, or take a slower pace while you see  The Best of Western Cuba , this colourful and captivating country will amaze you at every corner, with vintage cars and rum bars lining the streets of vibrant Havana, pastel-coloured historic buildings and rich culture in Santiago De Cuba, and the story of Che Guevara to be discovered in Santa Clara. Should you wish to adventure a little closer to home, our moderately and relaxed pace group adventure trips to Europe and Turkey could be just the ticket. It may be the world's smallest continent, but Europe offers some of the richest experiences to be found anywhere on the globe - from admiring the  Highlights of Andalucia , to immersing yourself in the historical  Treasures of Turkey . If you're looking to be truly dazzled on your solo adventure on one of our group trips, let the magic of Iceland and its natural wonders amaze you on our Land of the Midnight Sun  trip, or seize the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on our winter itinerary - surely an experience that everyone has on their Bucket List.

Solo Travel Over 50: Embrace New Adventures on Your Terms

Janice Waugh

July 18, 2023 by Janice Waugh

Solo travel over 50 and you will find new interests, gain new confidence, and discover new ways to manage a major life transition.

More people over 50 are traveling solo than ever before.

More than a quarter of the respondents to our annual reader survey are over 50. The percentage is similar on Facebook where we host the Solo Travel Society with over 270,000 participants. Dozens, sometimes thousands of people engage with other solo travelers there every day.

Whether you're in a relationship or are fabulously single, solo travel delivers so much more than the typical travel experience. And whether you are traveling independently or with a group, solo travel does not necessarily mean that you are alone. Taking a cooking class, a walking tour, or attending a meetup on a subject you are passionate about are all great activities for solo travelers. They can connect you to people of all ages from all over the world.

But before we get into the best reasons to travel solo over 50, let's look at the major life transition you may be facing, some of the questions that are arising now, and why this might be the perfect time of your life to head out on your own.

Travel Solo to Navigate a Major Life Transition

If you're over 50, you are likely facing a major life transition. As a 50+ you may:

  • be content with your career and no longer looking for challenges there.
  • have adult children who are no longer at home.
  • be part of the sandwich generation with parents and children requiring your attention.
  • have a relationship status that is complicated.

In the many-faceted world of those over 50, life is changing. You are facing a major life transition and it may not be clear what you're transitioning to.

Where will you redirect your energy?

Perhaps you're experiencing one or a number of the situations below. See how solo travel can help.

  • Have you been in the same relationship for decades? Is it getting a little tired? Take separate vacations and return with lots to say to each other.
  • Is your spouse or partner uninterested in travel? Going solo is your answer. See the world and return refreshed to your relationship.
  • Have your kids just left the nest? Then it’s time to find out who you are again. You can’t really do this with a companion who knows you and expects you to act in certain ways. Get away. Travel alone and rediscover yourself.
  • Are you suddenly single, either by divorce or loss? Solo travel is a real confidence builder , a great way to make a comeback.
  • Are you concerned that people at work see you as old? Head out on a solo adventure and people will quickly adjust their attitudes.
  • Is work dull with little hope of things changing? Solo travel over 50 will inject some challenge into life.
  • Is money tight? Solo travel can be inexpensive. It’s much easier to save on hostels, hospitality stays, great deals, and cheap flights when you travel alone.
  • Do you have health problems? Stress is a major contributor to most health problems. Plan a solo holiday where you set the schedule and take a break from the stress in your life.
  • Did you retire early? Do you have time to travel but family and friends don’t? No need to sit around and wait for them. Go solo and enjoy.
  • Is it time for change? Travel alone, reflect, analyze, and explore your possibilities without the influence of others.

Best Reasons to Travel Solo Over 50

Maybe we all need a little time to ourselves, to make decisions, discover our strengths, and experience more autonomy. Maybe we all need to travel solo.

  • Enjoy your freedom.  If you have spent most of your life surrounded by and responsible to others this is your chance to be responsible to no one but yourself. Go to bed when you like. Get up when you like. Eat, drink, wander, explore what you like. It's all up to you.
  • Gain confidence from that independence . Whether you're traveling solo on a tour or independently, there is a confidence-building element to solo travel for having jumped into a somewhat unknown situation on your own.
  • Discover who you are when you’re not meeting the demands of a spouse or children . When responding to everyone else, who has time to get to know oneself? Solo travel over 50 gives you that opportunity. Do what you couldn’t afford or didn’t have time to do when younger.
  • Explore new interests.  Solo travel can be a gateway to new interests. Whether it's music or hiking or discovering like I did last month that I like champagne, try something new. Maybe you wouldn't go to a bar by yourself at home but on the road in a town like Nashville , how could you possibly stay in with all that music around you? Perhaps  hiking is not part of your lifestyle but if you find yourself in the Lake District of England you may just find a new love. Solo travel is a chance to try something new.
  • Model a different kind of aging. I find that many people in their twenties and thirties are really curious about me. They seem to look at me as the kind of person they want to be when they get to my age – which, in their mind is very, very old. They see me as bold and welcome me into their conversations. And they often tell me that I am not like their parents at all. It seems I'm an alternative model for their future.
  • Expand your world with cross-generational conversations . Talking with people younger and older than me breaks me out of my limited world and gives me a better understanding of the issues faced by others. And they amuse me. I remember walking down a street in Italy with an American man in his twenties. He turned to look back at a beautiful young woman who had passed us and said to me, “I love Italian women. They have great junk in the trunk.” Really! Whatever I think about his comment, to have such access to young attitudes is wonderful, if not curious and sometimes disturbing.
  • Enjoy the respect age receives in other countries . My hair is grey. Given the courtesy I receive in some countries I have thought that I present as older than I am. Then I realized that it's actually about age being respected more in other cultures. Traveling on a train in India a young man wouldn't dream of moving me from my seat even though I was willing (insisting) and had, by means of a seat shift, taken his. No, his response was, “but you are our guest.” I suspect someone younger may not have been treated quite so well.
  • Reboot your life that may otherwise be on autopilot . Feeling a bit bored? Need to shake things up a bit? Need new stimulation? Solo travel can give you this. Fulfill lifelong dreams that may not be shared with a partner. Many partners take separate vacations to pursue their personal dreams. Go for it.

Different Options for Traveling Alone

There are two basic ways to travel solo.

  • Independent solo travel
  • Solo travel on a tour

Independent Solo Travel

Independent solo travel is when you plan, navigate, and negotiate everything yourself. The downside is all that work and responsibility if you don't enjoy it. The upside is freedom and independence. It's exhilarating! Most of what we write here is about independent solo travel. Here's a guide to over 500 posts on Solo Traveler.

Solo Travel on a Tour or Cruise

This is solo travel in a group where the planning and organizing is all taken care of for you. Every day you have a guide and the group heads out to another activity. No fear of being lonely, eating alone, or your safety. The tour takes care of everything.

Most companies organize tours and have a few solos on them. There are a few companies that just cater to solo travelers. Check out our  Deals  page for our exclusive list of solo-friendly tours with no or very low single supplements from multiple companies. You can also receive our monthly Newsletter and Advisory of Deals by email. Just click here and sign up for the Solo Traveler Newsletter.

Solo Travel Safety Considerations

Every week, people reach this blog by using the search term “solo travel after 50.” These words are frequently paired with concern for safety. There seems to be some concern about age and solo travel. From my perspective, there shouldn’t be.

Being 65, I think I'm qualified to address this issue. And, as you might imagine, I believe that it is not only safe to travel solo after fifty but also, for all the reasons above, important.

That said, at a certain age we become more aware of safety issues. When we were young, optimism prevailed. Concerns were tossed into the wind. Not so much now. So, here I have a few safety tips specifically for older solo travelers.

  • Get travel insurance . If you're over 65 this can be a problem. It gets more expensive the older you are but it can also save your bacon. Read how travel insurance has saved me a number of times in  A Complete Guide to Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers.
  • Put medications in your carry-on luggage . Eliminate the possibility of being separated from your daily medications should your baggage go astray. Pack all medications in your carry-on. It's always recommended to keep all meications in their original containers from the pharmacy. Read  How to Get Through an Airport by Yourself with Ease
  • Request special services in advance . I've walked more than a kilometer from my plane to the airport exit. For some, this may be too long a trek. Consider your abilities and request any special support you need a few days in advance of your flight.
  • Travel light . There's nothing worse than being in a position where you can't get help and you can't manage your bags on your own. Read  Bare Minimum Packing: Here’s Your Packing List .
  • Wear quality shoes . Balance starts to go after a certain age. It's a subtle process. Not obvious at first but, under the right (or should I say, wrong) circumstances, a twisted ankle, or worse, can easily happen. I gave up my beloved Merrell sandals for my more stable Eccos a couple of years ago.
  • Have back-up glasses . I lost a pair hiking once. It's simple to do. Best to have a backup pair.
  • Keep the bling at home . At this stage of life you may have some beautiful jewelry but that doesn't mean you have to take it traveling. Keep it at home where it's safe and you won't attract attention to yourself.
  • Don't promote the fact that you're away on social media . It may be exciting to be going on a solo adventure but don't announce it to the world. You want your home to be safe as you travel as well.

Great Destination Ideas for 50+ Travelers

In reality, the best destination for any solo traveling boomer (the baby boomer generation is generally defined as people born from 1946 to 1964) is up to them. You might want to climb Mount Everest and if you're up to the challenge, it's a great destination for you. So what can I offer in terms of destinations? How can I generalize? Here are trips that just about anyone can enjoy and they don't involve learning another language.

  • Spectacular Western Canada.  I traveled Western Canada by plane, train, and car a few years ago. The grandeur of the mountains, the friendliness of the people, great hikes, and small towns made it a great trip. It was simple to plan and affordable. You can read about it here:  Western Canada Itinerary: Top Things to See and Do  and  British Columbia by Train: Budget or Luxury. It’s Your Choice.
  • The United Kingdom.  The UK has so much to offer. The culture is different but the language is the same, making it interesting and easy. London is a top destination for most of us. I find the center of the city to be very safe. I've walked at night and had no problem. Read  Solo Travel London on a Budget: Top Tips for Free and Cheap and  Best Places to Stay in London: Accommodation for Solo Travelers . I'll never tire of Northern Ireland's glens and its dramatic Causeway Coastal Route. Read  Solo Travel Northern Ireland: Tips for Belfast and Beyond .
  • Road trip!  I love a road trip. I especially love a road trip along the coast and through a rugged landscape and one that drops me into small towns and villages to meet locals. I've taken two such road trips in Canada, one in New Brunswick and the other in Nova Scotia. Both provinces are very accessible by car for those who live on the eastern seaboard of the United States. Read  15 Great Solo Road Trips: All Solo Traveler Tested .
  • An educational holiday.  I set a goal for myself to become fluent in French. I have improved greatly by using holiday time for French immersion classes in Quebec City and Lyon, France.
  • A river cruise.  A river cruise covers many destinations in one trip with only one unpacking and repacking involved. That makes it easy. Read 12 River Cruise Tips for Solo Travelers: How to Make the Most of Your Journey .
  • Walking trips . I really enjoyed my walking trip on the Isle of Skye . On the path, I would stop, take in the view, and find a huge smile stretching across my face. I smile a lot but smiling just because the air and view and exertion are so wonderful is not part of my regular day. I really suggest walking trips. You can be as adventurous as you like. I encourage you to read this post by Susanne, a reader from Austria:  Solo Travel Destination: The West Highland Way, Scotland .
  • Creative travel . Creative travel is travel for the express purpose of learning something new. It may be cooking or a language, dance or painting. Creative travel helps you enter your destination through the local culture and by meeting locals and learning from them. Read  Creative Travel Tips: Discover More of a Destination and Yourself.

Some Additional Solo Travel Tips

Traveling solo late in your second act (or maybe in your third) is a wonderful experience. Whether you go for luxury or budget travel, it's all available to you. I'd like you to remember a couple of things.

  • Others will welcome the excitement of you . You are, by the mere fact that you're traveling solo, adventurous to many. You liven up an evening for people. I have enjoyed many a coffee or meal with travelers and locals who welcomed me into their conversation. I enrich them as they enrich me.
  • Hostels are not just for the young . Once referred to as youth hostels, today they are just hostels. Some, like the YHA hostels, are still non-profit but others are part of hostel chains. Yes, just like boomers, hostels have grown up. As the hostel clientele of the 60s and 70s has matured, so have hostels. To get a sense of staying at hostels as a boomer, read  The Hostel Experience for Solo Travelers: What to Expect. How to Stay Safe .

And one final comment:  don't hesitate to return to places you visited when you were younger . One of the great benefits of solo travel over 50 is that the knowledge gained and life lived over the years will take you to a deeper understanding of a destination than you could possibly have had before.

Vacations for Singles Over 50: Best Destinations and Tips

If you’re over 50 and single, you might be wondering where to go on vacation. The good news is that there are plenty of options available that cater specifically to solo travelers in your age group. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, there’s a vacation out there that’s perfect for you.

One of the best things about vacations for singles over 50 is that they offer a chance to connect with other like-minded people. You’ll have the opportunity to meet new friends, explore new places, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Plus, many of these vacations are designed with solo travelers in mind, so you can rest assured that you’ll be well taken care of.

From all-inclusive resorts to adventure tours, there are a variety of options to choose from when it comes to vacations for singles over 50. Whether you want to relax on a beach, explore a new city, or try something completely different, there’s a vacation out there that’s perfect for you. So why wait? Start planning your next adventure today!

Why Choose Solo Travel as a Single Over 50?

Traveling solo as a single over 50 can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, explore new destinations, or simply enjoy some time alone, there are many benefits to traveling solo.

One of the biggest advantages of solo travel is the freedom it gives you. You can choose where to go, what to do, and when to do it, without having to worry about anyone else’s schedule or preferences. This means you can take your time exploring a new city, or spend a whole day relaxing on the beach, without feeling rushed or guilty.

Another benefit of solo travel is the opportunity to meet new people. As a solo traveler, you’ll be more approachable and open to meeting new people than if you were traveling with a companion. This can lead to new friendships, interesting conversations, and even travel buddies for future trips.

Traveling solo can also be a great way to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s trying new foods, learning a new language, or navigating a new city, solo travel can help you build confidence and independence.

Finally, solo travel can be a great way to recharge and take some time for yourself. As a single over 50, you may have spent years taking care of others and putting their needs before your own. Traveling solo gives you the chance to focus on yourself, your interests, and your well-being.

Types of Vacations for Singles Over 50

If you are a single traveler over 50, there are various types of vacations that you can choose from. Whether you prefer to travel alone or in a group, there are plenty of options available to suit your travel style and preferences. Here are some of the most popular types of vacations for singles over 50:

Small Group Tours

Small group tours are a great option for solo travelers who want to explore new destinations with like-minded people. Companies such as Intrepid Travel, G Adventures , and Road Scholar offer a range of small group tours for singles over 50. These tours typically have a maximum group size of 12-16 people and are led by knowledgeable local guides. You can choose from a variety of destinations, travel styles, and trip durations to find the perfect small group tour for you.

All-Inclusive Vacations

All-inclusive vacations are a hassle-free option for solo travelers who want to relax and unwind. These vacations typically include accommodation, meals, drinks, and activities in the package price. Some popular all-inclusive resorts for singles over 50 include Club Med , Sandals , and Secrets . These resorts offer a range of activities such as water sports, yoga, and spa treatments, as well as social events where you can meet other travelers.

Adventure Travel

Adventure travel is a great option for solo travelers who want to get off the beaten path and challenge themselves physically and mentally. Companies such as Overseas Adventure Travel and G Adventures offer a range of adventure trips for singles over 50. These trips can include activities such as hiking, kayaking, and wildlife watching, as well as cultural experiences such as homestays and cooking classes.

Cruise Vacations

Cruise vacations are a popular option for solo travelers who want to see multiple destinations in one trip. Many cruise lines offer single cabins or waive the single supplement fee, making it more affordable for solo travelers. Some popular cruise lines for singles over 50 include Norwegian Cruise Line , Holland America Line , and Royal Caribbean . These cruises offer a range of activities such as onboard entertainment, shore excursions, and social events. Although my husband and I took a Viking River Cruise as a couple, we had singles on our cruise. The food, tours, and locations you can visit are amazing. We especially loved the smaller size (fewer than 200 passengers on our cruise) and the first-class service by the staff. If you’re looking for romantic opportunities this probably isn’t it, but if you’re looking for a luxury travel experience with a generally high level of safety, I very much recommend Viking.

Specialty Tours

Specialty tours are a great option for solo travelers who have a specific interest or hobby. Companies such as Road Scholar and Dude Ranchers’ Association offer a range of specialty tours for singles over 50. These tours can include activities such as birdwatching, photography, and horseback riding, as well as educational experiences such as lectures and workshops. While I never thought I’d be a dude rancher, looking at the website makes me hear the theme music from the movie City Slickers in my head. Helloooo!

Best Destinations for Solo Travelers Over 50

If you’re looking for the best vacation spots for singles over 50, there are plenty of exotic locations to choose from. Here are some popular destinations that offer great experiences for solo travelers:

Costa Rica is a beautiful country that offers a mix of adventure and relaxation. It’s a great place to explore national parks, go mountain biking or relax on the beach. If you’re interested in eco-tourism, Costa Rica is one of the best vacation spots. Occidental Papagayo is an all-inclusive resort that offers a great experience for solo travelers. And it’s adult only!

  Istanbul Turkey

If you’re interested in history and culture, Turkey is a great place to visit. It’s home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites , including ancient ruins and beautiful mosques. You can also experience a traditional Turkish bath, which can be a unique and relaxing experience. Odessey Traveller is a small-group tour company with a robust offering of tours in Turkey.

San Francisco

San Francisco is a great destination for solo travelers. It’s a vibrant city with plenty of things to do, including visiting museums, exploring neighborhoods, and trying new restaurants. You can also take a day trip to nearby Napa Valley or Monterey. I love San Francisco in the fall! October is warm and gorgeous there. Surprisingly, June is quite cold. I had to buy a coat in a thrift shop. A local friend says you can tell the tourists in June from the brand new sweatshirts they had to purchase when they get to town and only packed warm-weather clothes. If this is the case for you, warm up with an Irish coffee at The Buena Visita . It’s where the drink was invented!

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a bucket list destination for many travelers. It’s an ancient Incan city that’s located high in the Andes Mountains. You can hike the Inca Trail or take a train to get there. It’s a great place to explore on your own or with a tour group.

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s located in Wyoming and offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and skiing. There are also several golf courses in the area if you’re interested in playing a round.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a vibrant city that’s full of culture and history. It’s a great place to explore museums, art galleries, and historic neighborhoods. You can also take a tango lesson or try some traditional Argentine cuisine.

Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands offer stunning scenery and plenty of outdoor activities. You can go hiking, fishing, or take a scenic drive through the countryside. There are also several historic castles and distilleries to explore.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for solo travelers. It’s home to beautiful beaches and all-inclusive resorts. You can also explore historic cities like Santo Domingo or go on a zip-line adventure in the rainforest.

Many all-inclusive resorts cater to adults only, making them a great option for singles over 50. These resorts offer a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, without the noise and crowds of family-friendly resorts. Some popular adults-only all-inclusive resorts include Secrets Resorts, Sandals Resorts, and Excellence Resorts.

Inclusive Accommodations

While some travelers may prefer an all-inclusive resort, others may prefer an all-inclusive package with a set itinerary. Many travel companies offer all-inclusive packages that include flights, accommodations, meals, and activities. These packages can be a great option for singles over 50 who want to explore a new destination without the hassle of planning.

When choosing an all-inclusive vacation, be sure to read the fine print and understand exactly what is included in the package. Some resorts may charge extra for certain activities or amenities, so it’s important to know what’s included before you book. With the right research and planning, an all-inclusive vacation can be a great way for singles over 50 to relax, meet new people, and explore a new destination.

Solo Adventure Travel for Singles Over 50

If you are a single person over 50 looking for an adventure, solo travel is a great option. It allows you to explore new places and try new things while meeting new people. Here are some of the best places for solo adventure travel and adventure activities for singles over 50.

Best Places for Solo Adventure Travel

The great outdoors is a perfect place for solo adventure travel. National parks, hiking trails, and camping sites offer breathtaking views and a chance to connect with nature. Some of the best places for solo adventure travel include:

For a more structured adventure, consider taking a train ride or joining a group tour. These options offer a chance to see multiple destinations while still being in a group setting. Wild Women Expeditions is a great option for women over 50 looking for adventure travel.

Adventure Activities for Singles Over 50

Adventure activities are a great way to get your adrenaline pumping and try something new. Here are some adventure activities for singles over 50:

  • Scuba diving
  • Flying trapeze
  • Bungee jumping

Many adventure activities have age restrictions, so make sure to check before booking. Short-distance trips, such as weekend getaways or day trips , are also great options for solo adventure travel. Exploring close to home is a great hygge self-care activity as well.

Tips for Single Travelers Over 50

Traveling solo can be intimidating, but it can also be one of the best experiences of your life. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your solo travel adventure .

Choosing the Best Travel Company

When traveling solo, it’s important to choose the right travel company. Look for companies that specialize in single travel, and that offer a variety of trips that cater to your interests. Some companies even offer trips specifically for singles over 50, which can be a great way to meet like-minded people.

When choosing a travel company, make sure to read reviews and do your research. Look for companies that have a good reputation and that offer plenty of opportunities for socializing and group activities. Be careful with on-line recommendations. Nothing is sponsored in this post , but many websites are well-disguised ads. Ask IRL friends and family for recommendations if you trust their judgment.

Packing Tips for Solo Travelers

Packing for a solo trip can be a challenge, but with a little planning, you can pack everything you need without overpacking. Start by making a list of everything you need to bring, and then go through the list and cross off anything that’s not essential.

When packing, choose versatile clothing that can be worn in a variety of situations. And don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes, as you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking.

Staying Safe While Traveling Alone

Safety is always a concern when traveling alone, but there are steps you can take to stay safe. First and foremost, make sure to research your destination before you go. Know the areas to avoid, and make sure you have a plan for getting around safely.

When out and about, be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables close. And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it – locals are often happy to help tourists navigate their way around. If I’m traveling in the U.S., I like to have the Life 360 app active on my phone so my family can see where I’m at. You can use apps like this to create a temporary group so a trusted friend can find out where you are in case of an emergency.

By following these tips, you can have a great time traveling solo, with good food, plenty of opportunities to explore, and top resorts to stay in. And with the right travel company, you can meet other single people and make lasting friendships.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

trip for singles over 50

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Travelling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a Japanese onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavour-packed taco in the streets of Mexico City has your name on it? Whether you’re travelling solo, single or simply can’t be labelled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our tours aren’t exclusively for single travellers in their 50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the Amalfi Coast to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Perks of travelling single with Intrepid

Travellers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

catamarans over 50 feet for sale

Better sailing.

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Length: 50 Feet

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. Every detail is carefully thought out to establish novel and spacious architecture with a homely ambiance.

It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. The Lagoon 50 has an encompassing view, generous volumes with a self-tacking jib, and a shorter mast for easily simplified maneuvers. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Length: 52 Feet

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Lagoon 52

Privilege Series 5

Price: Around $1-1.5 Million USD

At 50 feet, this boat is quite marvelous and a privilege to spend your time in as a cruiser or owner. The Privilège Series 5 is the world’s first 50 feet sailing catamaran. This vessel was built by Privilège Marine, a French company based in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. They are famous for building premium luxury catamarans and designed by French Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The Privilège Series 5 is equipped with three or four double and a full-sized owner’s cabin located in the yacht’s center. It’s a lightweight boat at 48500 pounds and could go up to 52900 depending on the size.

It has great customization options, and it can be designed to suit the boat owner’s taste. The attention to detail on the boat is nothing short of perfection as the interior design, woodwork, safety measurements laid out by the boat’s design, aesthetics, ventilation, etc., was thought out good. The vessel’s finishing is really phenomenal as everything has a high level of craftsmanship.

Privilege Series 5

Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

Length: 58 Feet

Price: From $450k To $1.5 Million on the Used Market

Leopard 58 is a superb layout from Leopard, skilfully modeled by award-winning designers Robertson & Caine. This extravagant catamaran is suited to the prolific and innovative catamarans that have made Leopard famous while still giving out fresh features and various design options.

This expansive FlyBridge takes space to a whole new dimension as it is larger than its siblings with their award-winning aspects. A Flybridge is basically a version of catamarans that affords you the luxury of outdoor space, come rain or shine. Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

Leopard 58 - Best Catamaran Over 50 Feet

Price: Around $1 Million USD New ; Not many options on the used market since its a newer model

Popularly called the Seawind 52 because of its 52 feet size. The Seawind 52′ 1600 is designed by world-renowned architects Reichel Pugh. Like the Lagoon 52, it’s a perfect balance for onboard comfort and performance sailing and sea safety. Perfect for sailors or boat lovers who are looking for a little extra.

This catamaran sets a standard for offshore sailing because of its simple sailing methods, large open cockpit space, and twin protected helms. Equipped with a three or four-cabin design that affords the owner’s cabin expansive living space, great storage, high aspect riders, daggerboards, an elegant fit/finish, and infused carbon-reinforced construction.

Seawind 1600

Price: Around $1 Million USD New

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The Reichel Pugh design is a departure from the more conservative looks of the other Seawinds and embraces a very Euro-style with plumb bows, hard chines, a swept-back cabin, and a large open cockpit with helm stations on both sides. The boat is a pure performance cruiser that was conceived as a blue water voyaging boat for a family. At 52 feet, it falls within the size range that an experienced couple can handle, so it would make a great platform for a couple to explore the world. The 1600 like all of the Seawinds and Corsairs, are built in Vietnam.

Nautitech 542

Length: 54 Feet

Price: Around $1.2 Million USD New

Nautitech 542 is the typical example of offshore meeting first class. This boat has ideally tweaked fittings for smooth sailing under any circumstances. Furnished with a single wheel on its roof for perfect views of the boat and a comfy 2-person seat. The idea of this boat is mostly based on performance and quality. Asides from the positions of the helm, Nautitech 541 and 542 are very similar. Nautitech 542 is large and luxurious. The sail controls at the helm stations for easy sailing maneuvers and perfect for all weather conditions. The interior was designed by French designer Franck Darnet. Equipped with state of the art furniture and cabin experience, a sleek experience is assured.

Xquisite X5

Length: 51 Feet

Price: Around $1.5 Million USD

Once you have met your first Xquisite X5, you will never forget its absolute distinctive looks and almost space-traveling styling. The whole look of the boat, with its large reverse curving arches and cat’s eye windows, says right out loud that you need to pay attention. The boat itself is a very modern design with a classic and comfortable interior. It sails better than most of its peers in the 50-foot range and is set up cleverly so one watchstander can hand, reef, and steer all from the protected comfort of the raised steering station. Tomas and Sara, who build the boats in South Africa, are veteran cruisers and owned hull number one of the X5 line before taking over the company. Their attention to detail and the innovations they have incorporated into the boats all stem from their time living aboard and blue water sailing.

Privilege 615

Length: 61 Feet

Price: From $800k to $1.3 Million USD on the Used Market

When it comes to onboard luxury, Marc Lombard, who designed this catamaran, is an expert in that field. This lovely boat is in touch with the latest style, sporting a flybridge complete with two wheels and a broad sunbed suitable for the crew to relax the day away. The 615 is a combination of simplistic and superior design with an outstanding crew, results in the ultimate luxury Caribbean cruising experience. The impeccable elegance of the interior with a lavish owner’s suite and the boat’s perfect wood quality are two great reasons to make you get the boat. The freedom to choose a four or five-double cabin is another, depending on the size of the family.

Followed closely by its outstanding exterior, you’re sure to fall in love with it on sight, from the cockpit to the foredeck. With an impressive platform and lustrous profile, the Privilède 615 contradicts the volume and versatility of its interior. One wonders how they fit into the other, gives it a great ambiance.

Balance 526

Length: 52ft 6in

Price: From $1.3 to $1.6 Million USD New

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

Sunreef 62 - Luxury Catamaran

Outremer 5X

Length: 69 Feet

Price: From $1.3 to $1.8 Million USD on the Used Market

The Outremer 5X is unlike any other in the yacht market as it is fast, sturdy, but luxurious all at the same time. Also, it possesses finely finished cabinetwork, spacious accommodations, and an excellent payload carrying ability. Modeled great agility to make even a single person handle any maneuver, its retractable high aspect ratio daggerboards assure a shallower drift giving access to the most remote of harbors.

When it comes to the interior, every Outremer model is trying to outdo the last in elegance, neatness, and modernity. She offers an unrestricted view and functional comfort. The port hull suite includes a king-sized bed, superb sea view portlight, an office, and a separate private entrance from the rear. It’s a semi-custom interior designed by VPLP in conjunction with Patrick le Quement. It won the ‘European Yacht of the Year’ and Cruising World’s ‘Boat of the Year’ in 2013 and 2014. This catamaran is as affordable as a luxury catamaran over 50 feet can get. Beautiful isn’t she?

Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. This also a pretty affordable option in this category with prices on the used market as low as 450k.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
