Larco Museum

Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

• Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
• Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
• It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
• Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them. 

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. The best time to visit coastal Lima is the opposite, between December and April (Peru’s summer). You can see the top sites of Peru in as little as four days, while you can get the full breadth of the country in two weeks. The majority of visitors spend somewhere in between — around a week to 10 days depending on what destinations they wish to see. Travelers focused on the beloved Andean sites of Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley and Cusco need a week or so. Travelers wanting to see the coast, mountains and rainforest should plan 10-11 days. Additional destinations like Lake Titicaca, Arequipa and Nazca Lines each add another 2-4 days.

In general, all travelers should have their routine vaccinations up-to-date, plus Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines (especially those staying in rural areas). What language is spoken in Peru?

English is not widely spoken in Peru, though you can get by with no problem with the help of guides, hotel personnel and language translation apps. It is helpful to learn some basic Spanish before your trip if possible as well.

Is Peru safe?

Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination . Violent crime is no more common in Peru than any other tourist destination in the world. Of course, like anywhere, you should exercise caution to avoid petty crime like robbery by keeping your valuables secure and avoiding dark, non-touristy places at night. Be aware of your surroundings, know your route and keep your personal items secure and you will be fine.

Is the water safe to drink?

In Peru, the tap water is not safe to drink. For drinking water, stick to bottled water. We recommend brands like San Mateo and San Luis, which can be found at any corner bodega or supermarket. Tap water boiled vigorously for a minute or more is also safe for hot beverages, although those with a sensitive stomach should boil bottled water instead. The tap water is fine for brushing your teeth, just avoid swallowing it.

What is the best mode of transportation?

The street bus system can be a bit tricky to navigate, but Lima’s Metropolitano offers easy rides to the historic center.

What kind of adapter/converter do I need for my electronics?

Peru uses a 220 volt, 60 cycle current while the US uses a 120 volt supply. Luckily, most laptops, cameras and mobile phones can accept dual voltage (110V/220V) , but be sure to confirm before plugging in. Other electronics, like hair straighteners, are likely 110V so you will need a converter for those. Conveniently, the outlets in Peru are often the two-pronged flat type like in the US, especially at popular hotels, but in some locations you will find the two or three prong circular kind. It’s a good idea to bring both a converter and adapter just in case. However, the converter can be skipped if you are sure your electronics are dual voltage.

What is the exchange rate?

The currency in Peru is Peruvian Soles and abbreviation is PEN. Currently, $1 USD is equal to 4.10 PEN. Money can be exchanged at any casa de cambio (exchange house). The touristy areas all have several casas de cambio that you can go to and find a good exchange rate. Some major supermarkets accept USD although the exchange rate won’t be as good, and change will be given to you in soles.

Can I use the ATMs?

Yes, and they are plentiful in the major cities. You can step into any BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental or others and use their ATM with your debit card for a $3-$6 fee. The machines at these banks all have options in English. Opt to use an ATM located inside a bank rather than on the street for higher security.

Is Lima worth visiting?

Absolutely! Lima is a very interesting metro area with many things to see. There is a historic central area, a beautiful coastline with 2+ miles of continuous parks, an artsy bohemian district and a world-renowned culinary scene. You can stay at a comfortable hotel in the popular Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco districts and enjoy day tours or wander around at your leisure sampling the amazing food and wandering into the shops. Keep in mind that between the months of June and October it is extremely cloudy and often misty in Lima, the rest of the year is more moderate and sunny.

How do I get to Machu Picchu?

To get to Machu Picchu first you need to fly into Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport. From there, you need to take an hour and a half flight to Cusco. Once in Cusco, you can take a three hour and 15 minute train. Once in the town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu, you take a 40 minute shuttle bus up to the citadel.

Most travelers get to Machu Picchu more gradually than outlined. They spend a night or two in Lima, a night or two in Cusco, and a night or two in the Sacred Valley before making their way to Machu Picchu . The train from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu takes a little less than two hours. Some travelers also opt for a multi-day trek to Machu Picchu like the Inca Trail , Lares Trek or Salkantay Trek instead of train.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, occurs in 40-50 percent of people who live in low elevation areas traveling to an elevation of 10,000 feet or more. It occurs in 25 percent of people traveling to a destination of 8,000 feet or more. It is a temporary condition characterized by slight headache, shortness of breath when walking, fatigue, minor dizziness and loss of appetite. Symptoms develop between 6 to 24 hours of being at higher elevations, and last one to three days. It is typically mild and no need for alarm.

There are many ways to combat altitude sickness , like drinking lots of water, avoiding heavy and fatty foods, no smoking or drinking alcohol, eating whole grains and veggies and taking it slow the first couple days. Do not begin a challenging hike the first two days at high elevation, start your trek on day three the earliest.

Cradle to the vast Incan Empire, the largest in pre-Colombian America, Peru's power and gold attracted the Spanish conquistadors who used it to fund their own vast empire in the Americas. As a result, colonial gems like magnificent Cusco were built on Incan foundations, making for a fascinating hybrid culture. Peru is peppered with Incan sites, but none so famous as the "lost city" of Machu Picchu, whose breathtaking image seems to grace every brochure and travel book. Peru has been blessed with natural gifts as well: a huge chunk of Amazon rainforest falls within its bounds, and visitors can hike through jungle, trek in the Andes, and surf the northern beaches all in the same week. Cap it off with Lake Titicaca, one of the highest lakes in the world, and you've only just begun to scratch the surface.

Since 2005, Planeterra has been working with the Ccaccaccollo community to develop a women’s weaving cooperative. G Adventures groups are able to visit this community as part of the Sacred Valley Tour. Here they meet the women and learn about all the stages of the weaving process: hand-spinning the wool, dying the wool using natural dyes, and participating in a weaving demonstration. Travellers are also given the opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made them. Today, more than 55 women are part of the association, constantly learning new methods of production to make items that our travellers find useful for their trips, while also maintaining the traditional weaving methods to produce textiles made from llama and alpaca wool.

Parwa is a restaurant owned by the Huchuy Qosqo Association, a community-based tourism enterprise developed by Planeterra and G Adventures with co-financing from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Group. All income earned by the restaurant is used for investment in social projects for the community. The ingredients used in the restaurant are bought directly from the local farmers, providing a local market for direct sales. Parwa Restaurant opened in March 2014 and has an average of 1,500 travellers per month, mostly from G Adventures. Employees have monthly salaries, health insurance, pension funds, and other labor benefits. Over 25 micro entrepreneurs received technical assistance and funds to establish new businesses to supply the Parwa restaurant or sell their goods to our travellers who visit the Huchuy Qosco community.

The best ways to pay for services in Peru

It’s common to pay with card, but cash is more widely accepted and probably your best bet. You can take out money at ATMs — they’re easily accessible, open on weekends, and allow you take out local currency (Peruvian Soles) and USD. We recommend using local currency so if you’re looking to exchange cash, it’s better to do it in the big cities rather than towns or tourist attractions because they generally have better rates. We also recommend using credit cards in restaurants, department stores, and supermarkets. If paying with a card, VISA is more generally used but Mastercard is accepted too.

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

When leaving a tip for your server in a restaurant, the standard 10-15% is fine.

Bar Service

People in Peru normally do not tip in bars, but if you’re feeling a little generous, anywhere between 5-10% is acceptable.

Tour guides

$ 5 usd/day.

When tipping the tour guides, it is recommended that each passenger contributes $5 USD/day or roughly $15 USD - $25 USD for treks that are three to four days long.

Trekking guides, porters, drivers, cooks

It is recommended that every passenger contributes about $50 USD towards the trekking guides, porters, drivers, and cooks.

Hotel concierge / cleaning / staff

$ 2- $ 5 usd.

Tipping hotel service is also not a common practice in the hotels we use, but anywhere between $2 USD and $5 USD is fine.

The price of a cab ride is normally negotiated before the trip starts, and the tip would be included in the agreed upon rate.

Other services

Drivers for included tours can be tipped typically between $1 and $3 USD.

Packing for Peru

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.

Electricity and power supplies in Peru

The entire country of Peru runs on 220-volt currents and uses two types of electrical outlets — one that accepts two-pronged plugs with flat, parallel blades (Type A), and another that accepts plugs with two round prongs (Type C). However, many Peruvian electrical outlets are designed to accept both types. If your appliance has a different plug attachment, you can buy a universal plug adapter that’s inexpensive and easy to carry around with you. Before you plug in any appliance that you’ve brought from home, make sure it can handle it. A great way to kill a 110-volt appliance is to fry it at 220 volts.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the   European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese   and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or   futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chilli peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru. 

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat. 

5. Coca tea

Rumoured to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the centre of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organised civilisations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilisations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilisations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Peru's more recent history has been dominated by military coups and regional disputes. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices levelling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

You'll find vendors selling colourful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has travelled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organised), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks. 

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Do I need a visa to travel to Peru?

Peru has visa-free travel agreements with most countries, and foreign nationals including those from the  United Kingdom , United States,  New Zealand  and  Canada  do not require a visa for tourism purposes. Eligible foreign nationals will be issued a free visitor permit in their passport upon arrival.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service is really good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Peru?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country. 

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good shout for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they're not always provided. Toilet paper isn't supposed to be flushed, and most toilets have a bin next to them to dispose of the used toilet paper. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if travelling on the Inca Trail. 

What will it cost for a…?

Prices in restaurants and stores are generally listed in Peruvian   nuevos soles   (PEN). Below are the average prices you can expect to pay for everyday items and services:

• Short ride on a public city bus = 0.5-2 PEN
• Bottle of beer = 8 PEN
• Street cart snack/lunch = 5-10 PEN
• Lunch in a café = 15-20 PEN
• Dinner at a nice restaurant = 40-80 PEN

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Make sure you carry cash for when you're dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors. 

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when travelling away from the larger cities.

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Peru?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:

1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.  

Is Peru an LGBTQIA+friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a Pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travellers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when travelling in country areas.

Peru has plenty of lesser-known pre-Incan archaeological sites, lush jungles, and tranquil beaches to explore – but you'll need a car to reach them.

While car rental prices in Peru are steep compared to bus tickets, the ability to make the various stopovers on one of these epic road trips is well worth the investment. 

Before embarking on a road trip to any region, keep in mind some road etiquette in Peru: tourists driving here will find that big city traffic is chaotic, and locals don’t always heed typical rules upon interregional highways (speed limits, turn signals, etc.). 

If you avoid driving at night and take things slow, your road trip will be a safe and unforgettable success.

Here are the best road trips in Peru .

1. Southern coast adventure

The best route for adrenaline activities.

Lima-Nazca; 450km (280 miles); allow 2-3 days

From the bustle of the Peruvian capital Lima, venture south down the arid Pan-American Highway and cruise past weekend getaway favorites like San Bartolo (surfers should prioritize a stop at Cerro Azul, a small fishing town favored by local wave hunters).

Continue through Peru’s vast southern desert for another 90 minutes and the Pan-American reaches the unique coastline of Paracas.

A stop in Paracas will allow you to stretch your legs as you stroll the rugged beaches and spot wildlife such as sea lions or take an epic boat ride out to what’s known locally as the "poor man’s Galapagos Islands," Islas Ballestas , to Humboldt penguins.

From Paracas’ Pacific coastline, Ica is just an hour inland and bordered by wineries and pisco producers. Just 10 minutes beyond the city center is the desert oasis, Huacachina . The natural pool is surrounded by spectacular dunes, making Huacachina a hot spot for dune buggies and sandboarders.

After a full day of adrenaline-induced activities, get back in the car and head to your last stop on this southern road trip: Nazca .

This is your chance to change modes of transportation by opting for a six-seater plane ride over the mysterious geoglyphs known as the Nazca Lines . Two miles out of town are the spiraling stone canals also built by the Nazca culture (in 200 CE and 700 CE), the Cantalloc Aqueducts .

Detour: Stop in Palpa before you get to Nazca to see the Palpa Lines , the lesser-known but just as impressive geoglyphs, viewable from a lookout 8km (5 miles) south of Palpa. Better yet, combine the viewing with the same flight over the Nazca Lines.

2. Central to high jungle

Best for exploring coffee fields and german-austrian ancestry.

La Merced-Pozuzo; 157km (98 miles); allow 4-5 days (not including pit-stops)

The gateway to Peru’s central jungle, La Merced is your jumping-off point for this scenic road trip that concludes in the tranquil selva alta (high jungle) of Oxapampa, reachable only by land.

As you leave La Merced, take the time to stop by the native Ashaninka Pampa Michi community to learn about their history and culture. Continue north on Av Castilla along Route 22B, eventually merging onto Highway 5N (which cuts through the northern jungle).

At the fork of Puente Paucartambo, take a right to reach Villa Rica (left takes you to Oxapampa, so you’ll be circling back to this point to continue the road trip). This warm corner of Peru is famed for its delicious coffee.

When it’s time to circle back to Puente Paucartambo, take the exit to Oxapampa . It should take less than two hours to reach the picturesque high jungle, but you will feel worlds away from previously visited tropical towns.

Austrian-German settlers arrived in this isolated area in 1853 and left a lasting mark on its architecture, culture and gastronomy. Recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, this unique town is next to the thriving Yanachaga Chemillén National Park .

After strolling around the clean and calm town of Oxapampa, chowing down on chicken schnitzel and cooling off at El Tigre waterfall (a 10-minute drive from the plaza), jump back in the car to continue north for nearly two hours to reach Pozuzo .

Along the way, you can stop at two more waterfalls: Torre Bamba and Rayan Tambo. The reward for navigating the narrow dirt road to Pozuzo is a cold pint from the town’s German-style brewery, Dörcher.

Planning Tip: Organize your road trip through the jungle between April and October to avoid the rainy season. 

3. High altitude cultures in southern Peru

Best for archaeological sites.

Cuzco-Puno; 389 km (242 miles); allow 3-4 days

Trains, planes and busses all link the imperial city of Cuzco to Puno but traveling to the folkloric capital of Peru by car means traversing the highlands while soaking in all the cultural highlights at your own pace.

Stay on Highway 3S the whole route, stopping off at the pre-Incan Pikillacta. Built by the Wari culture around 650 CE, the archaeological site is a bit of a mystery, yet it has been incredibly preserved. Continuing south just 15km (9.3 miles), you will run into the "Sistine Chapel of the Americas," Iglesia de San Pedro in Andahuaylillas.

Less than two hours further along the route is another archaeological gem, Raqchi, which contains a two-story temple dedicated to Viracocha , the most prominent Inca deity. Be sure not to fill up on too hearty a lunch as you’ll soon be crossing La Raya Pass, the highest point of your trip at 4335 meters above sea level (14,222 feet).

Take your postcard-perfect photos and hop back in your vehicle before the high-altitude chills numb your fingertips. A few hours later, you’ll have reached Puno , your final destination and the gateway to Lake Titicaca .

Though you’ll want to feast on a plate of trout ceviche or chupe de quinoa (quinoa stew) to celebrate the end of this scenic yet windy drive, take it easy as the altitude of Puno is 3822m.

Detour: Not long before arriving in Puno, pull off Highway 3S to see the chullpas (funerary towers) of Sullistani, which reach heights of up to 12m.

4. Northern coast beaches and mangroves

Best route for a relaxing getaway .

Piura-Tumbes; 287km (178 miles); allow 3-4 days

This run along Peru’s northern coast is a good chance to surf and soak up the sun. Along the way, you’ll stop at idyllic little beach towns, each one adding to the chilled-out vibe of this road trip.

This route begins in Piura , a bustling city where colonial buildings line its Plaza de Armas. Peruse the Casa Grau museum , dedicated to the famous naval hero. Hop onto the Panamericana Norte Highway and whisk yourself away to Organos.

Characterized by turquoise waters and sandy beaches, Organos is 15 minutes from the popular surf town of Máncora but is far more laid-back. Kayak, windsurf or simply stroll along the coastline dotted with cozy bungalows and a few stylish cafes.

Continue your journey north, whizzing past Mancora. Your drive along the coast will bring you to countless other beach towns, but after an hour and a half, you can count on stretching your legs in Zorritos.

Thanks to the Humboldt Current, the fishing and surfing village enjoys a warm climate and pleasant water temperatures all year long. Some 25 minutes outside of Zorritos is El Tubo, a natural hot spring.

Head over in the evening with a cold drink and enjoy the calm surrounding desert landscapes. Another fantastic option would be the medicinal mud baths known as Los Hervideros.

Cruise along the coast for one more hour to reach your final destination: Tumbes. Synonymous with biodiversity, this small region of northern Peru is home to the incredible Mangroves National Sanctuary . Take a break from behind the wheel and paddle your way through these coastal swamps.

Planning Tip: Aim to drive between July and October to squeeze in a whale-watching excursion near Organos.

The Inca Journey

I enjoyed this tour of Peru, including the Amazon jungle. Prior to the tour I did have some issues with G adventures who were running the tour, as their booking page was not very transparent about the accomodation, and it still has not changed up until this point at my last viewing. Single occupancy supplements need to be highlighted at the booking stage, So that single travellars like myself know the full costs of the tour, including any supplements. The single room supplement ( had I payed it) was over £300. However when i actually started the tour, I was put in my own room in each Hotel. Thereby saving myself the £300. This could of been made a lot easier at the booking stage. The tour guides were very good. and knowledgable. All hotels were fairly basic, but clean. Breakfasts in each hotel again were not great. Transportation was well organised, and all went to plan. Overall I would reccomend this tour.

3 days -Lima – Paracas – Nazca

Though this one is booked via private travel agent, the tours were combined with peruhop. Gives you the chance to meet a lot of new people. The guide was friendly and so helpful with recommendations as well. highly recommended.

Waman Adventures ran this tour smoothly and professionally. All accommodations, transportation, and most of the food were good. Every second of this trip was carefully thought out. A very informative, entertaining, and pleasant tour. You don't need to worry about anything. We learn a lot about Peru, nature, the ancient Inca civilization, and the current tribes. The tour guides Gido and Will are very professional, caring, punctual, and accurate. The hiking trips might be challenging ( for me, I have asthma) but there is an option to take a horse or bike with the driver. We highly recommend Waman Adventure Tours to everyone.

Premium Peru

Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

Best Of Peru

At this time, I am going to give a synopsis of our drivers and guides. Let me lead off by saying all the guides we had were knowledgeable and catered to our needs. Kudos to Indus Travel for using them. They made sure that the members of the group were accommodated as far as comfort during our excursions. They made sure we had plenty of water to stay hydrated. Every time we entered or exited the bus they provided two bottles each of cold water. 1. All the guides were knowledgeable and attentive to the - groups needs. They assured that we all experienced the same information. 2. Transfer from Lima Airport to Sonesta Hotel, August 14 – Melissa and driver were right there to collect us and drive us the 45 minutes to our hotel. She provided us with some history of Lima and made sure we got checked into the hotel. 3. Transfer from Sonesta Hotel to Lima Airport, August 15 – Bruno was there to get us to the airport at 445am. He escorted us to the Latam desk and made sure we got checked in. If it weren’t for him, we may not have been able to board 4. Ollantaytambo ruins and Cusco City Tour – Wilda – was extremely knowledgeable in the Incan civilization. She accommodated the group in allowing some to climb the terraces and led the remainder on a tour around the ground floor. In Cusco, she led us through all the churches explaining how the Spanish had built the churches on the top of the Incan temples. 5. Machu Picchu – Luis picked us up at the hotel and made sure we got our train tickets and got on the right train. Jackeline met us at the train and guided us through the entrance process and then proceeded to lead us through the ruins. She accommodated a couple of the group that could only make it to the first level while getting the rest of the group to the top and then having us understand that the name was for the mountain (meaning old mountain). 6. Dinner at Tunupa – Guide was Alan and he was gracious enough to walk slowly to accommodate a few of the group as we had done a couple of miles already. The route to the restaurant was three city blocks STRAIGHT UPHILL. It was the same route we took earlier in the day for the tour. Alan assured that we were seated at the restaurant and promptly left us. 7. Hotel to airport for flight to Lima. Again, two of us flew Latam while the remainder of the group flew Avianca. 8. Airport to Hotel in Lima – 9. City tour and ruins – Julia led us through the city (two monasteries and through the central square) and through the Inca city of Saqsawwaman, more like the Egyptian pyramids but bigger. The worlds largest stone is located at this spot (something like 200 tons). We also visited Q’enco, Pukapukara and Tambomachmay. Again, Julia was most informative Dinner at Hualana - Pepe took us to dinner and since one of our group was sick, we asked him to join us. He regaled us with tales of his many experiences as a tour guide. Hotels – Sonesta Hotels are really fantastic. I again will commend Indus Travels for using these hotels. All Lima and Cusco hotels were close to the center of town and easy walking to the central markets and dining (when on our own). Excursions – Not much to add here, but we were exposed to lots of the history of Peru and proof of Peru’s gastronomical reputation. The tours were extraordinary, especially Machu Picchu (of course that’s what we came to see). Food was excellent, but buffets get tiresome. Our (Cindy and I) favorite was the sit down at Huana Pullana.

Classic Peru

I visited Cusco and Puno in Peru, best experience ever. Intrepid does care for responsible travel, and we also slept at a local comunity when we got the opportunity to dress up as locals. We shared their meals and it was an authentic inspirational experience for me. I would love to travel with Intrepid once more, or maybe more than that.

Best of Peru

The first 2 hotels included were amazing but the one in Aguas Calientes (Flowers) was not great, not the same level as the first 2 by far. The tour guides were all awesome, very knowledgeable, nice, and thoughtful. The tour activities were all good but it would be good to have the day off after arriving in Cusco after coming from Lima instead of having a tour almost right after landing. This is a great tour company with great service!

National Geographic was not associated with our tour, but G adventures did an excellent job. Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly and incredibly helpful on every part of the tour. They all went far above and beyond the minimum, from helping us get laundry done to caring for members of our group who became ill. Every detail was planned for and the tour ran smoothly from start to finish. I will gladly book with G adventures again the future.

Inkayni Perú Tours was awesome in every respect from beginning to end! Staying at the Ayni Hotel in Cuzco was a delight and first class, with delicious food in its restaurant. Wilbert was our fabulous tour guide who told us and showed us everything he could possibly tell us and show us. His knowledge, experience and insight of all things Peruvian during the first part of our tour was beyond exceptional. Machu Picchu would not have been the same without him. Henry took over guiding the second half of our tour and poured his heart out teaching us more about the Peruvian way of life. The highlight with him was a stay with Eugenio and Vilma at their home on the island of Amantani on Lake Titicaca and dancing to traditional music in traditional dress. Vilma’s cooking was absolutely delicious. Seeing the Milky Way and the Southern Cross with Henry is something we will never forget. Thanks to Inkayni Perú Tours, the Ayni Hotel Cuzco and its staff, Eugenio and Vilma, and our wonderful guides Wilbert and Henry for making our adventure to Perú one of best we have ever had.

El turismo, corazón de la economía peruana, "tardará dos años en recuperarse"

Perú desarrolla una ambiciosa campaña de promoción turística para recuperar el flujo de visitantes extranjeros que, como el resto del mundo, sufrió un parón por causa del coronavirus. PromPerú, organismo encargado de promover el turismo al país sudamericano, apuesta por un turismo "bioseguro" para conjugar economía con pandemia.

El Gobierno peruano ha puesto en marcha diversas medidas para reactivar el sector turístico. Rosario Pajuelo, directora de PromPerú Francia, invitada de Escala en Paris, precisa que "toda la cadena de valor del turismo viene aplicando protocolos de bioseguridad para dar y restablecer la confianza de los viajeros. Perú busca posicionarse como un país de seguridad. Por ejemplo, el aeropuerto de Lima ha instalado laboratorios para hacer el test contra el Covid-19, los hoteles también están brindando facilidades en todos los espacios públicos y también privados".

El año pasado, en el mes de enero, el país registraba más de 10.000 casos de contagio diarios y ahora están en unos 3.300. Más del 64% de la población ha recibido una dosis completa de vacunas. De acuerdo con diversas fuentes, Perú es el cuarto destino más visitado de América del Sur.

Antes de la pandemia, unos 4 millones de extranjeros visitaban el país al año. "Para el 2022 tenemos metas más cualitativas, porque queremos ir creciendo gradualmente. La recuperación tardará uno o dos años para volver al nivel de visitantes del 2019", responde nuestra invitada.

Hablar de Perú es hablar del majestuoso Machu Pichu. Al respecto y para comparar, el Gobierno de Ecuador ha impuesto restricciones muy severas para acceder a las islas Galápagos. Mientras el Gobierno peruano también está organizando el ingreso de manera razonada.

"El santuario histórico de Machu Pichu recibe ahora un aforo máximo de 3.500 visitantes por día, pero se ha ido aumentando gradualmente y se están activando nuevos accesos a la ciudadela. Existen programas para reforestar los alrededores, también un programa para desechos sólidos y de reciclado de plásticos. Obtuvo el certificado carbón neutral de la iniciativa verde, y buscamos reducir las emisiones de dióxido de carbono de un 45% para el 2030 y alcanzar la 'neutralidad carbono' en 2050", puntualiza la responsable de PromPerú Francia.

A la luz de la experiencia vivida con la pandemia y de la aceleración del cambio climático, ¿qué sigue ahora para cambiar un modelo que se muestra frágil? "El turismo es el corazón de la economía, es la tercera fuente de divisas del país y representa el 3,8% del PIB. El turismo emplea a alrededor de 1,5 millones de personas en forma directa e indirecta. Pero también buscamos diversificar nuestras exportaciones con nuevos productos".

Uno de los principales atractivos de Perú, el plato fuerte, es el culinario. Desde hace varios años hay un 'boom' de la cocina peruana, considerada una de las mejores del mundo. Pía León fue designada Mejor Chef del Mundo en 2021, pero también hay otros chefs reconocidos como Virgilio Martínez o Carlos Camino, propietario del restaurant Miraflores en Lyon, Francia. Es muy probable que algún día no muy lejano la comida peruana sea reconocida como patrimonio inmaterial de la humanidad como es el caso hoy de Francia y México.
