PBR World Finals Return to Fort Worth and Dickies Arena May 12-21 to Conclude the 30 th Anniversary Season and Crown the 2023 PBR World Champion

FORT WORTH, Texas (December 19, 2022) – This May, the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Finals will return to Fort Worth, Texas, for the second consecutive season. The seven-day marathon event will take over Dickies Arena May 12-14 and 18-21, to conclude the 30 th anniversary individual season and crown the 2023 PBR World Champion.

During the 2023 season, the PBR is celebrating its 30 th anniversary since 20 cowboys broke away from the traditional rodeo with the belief that bull riding could be a standalone sport. Since their trailblazing initiative, the PBR has grown into a global phenomenon awarding nearly $300 million in prize money.

When the World Finals debuted in Fort Worth in May 2022, fans witnessed one of the most ferocious championship races in PBR history for both riders and bulls.

Riding an incredible post-season wave of momentum, Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) capped a dominant season by winning the 2022 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast to be crowned the 2022 PBR World Champion.

As the 2022 PBR World Finals got underway, Swearingen bucked off in Round 1, surrendering his world No. 1 rank, but he then rode six bulls in a row to pull away from the field.

Locked in a ride-for-ride battle with Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) to begin the event, and Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) in the final rounds, the 2022 PBR World Championship came down to the final two outs of the event.

When Championship Sunday got underway with Round 7, Swearingen and Pacheco, the 2018 World Champion, both converted, leaving the gold buckle up for grabs in the final round.

For their final outs of the season, Swearingen was tasked with Mike’s Magic (Five Star Ranch/BS Cattle) while Pacheco readied to face off against Manaba (Joe & Nina Webb/Julian/D&H Cattle Co.) in a must-ride situation.

When Pacheco was brought down by Manaba in 5.9 seconds, Swearingen clinched the 2022 PBR World Championship before even readying his rope.

Despite being brought down in 2.05 seconds and getting roughed up by the rampaging bull, Swearingen’s gutsy 6-for-8 showing at the event earned him the World Finals event title and his career-first PBR World Championship.

Swearingen is now just the seventh rider to capture both honors in the same season.  He is the 20 th different rider – and 12 th American – to claim the PBR World Champion gold buckle since the sport’s first championship in 1994.

Throughout 2022, Swearingen went an impressive 26-for-60, covering 43.33% of his animal athlete opponents. He earned $1,697,481.63, including $1,394,000 for his career-first PBR World Championship and World Finals event win.

A complete list of past PBR World Champions is: Jose Vitor Leme (2020, 2021), Jess Lockwood (2017, 2019), Kaique Pacheco (2018), Cooper Davis (2016), J.B. Mauney (2013, 2015), Silvano Alves (2011, 2012, 2014), Renato Nunes (2010), Kody Lostroh (2009), Guilherme Marchi (2008), Justin McBride (2005, 2007), Adriano Moraes (1994, 2001, 2006), Mike Lee (2004), Chris Shivers (2000, 2003), Ednei Caminhas (2002), Cody Hart (1999), Troy Dunn (1998), Michael Gaffney (1997), Owen Washburn (1996) and Tuff Hedeman (1995).

A complete list of past PBR World Finals event winners is: Leme (2017, 2021), Boudreaux Campbell (2020), Lockwood (2019), Marco Eguchi (2018), Ryan Dirteater (2016), Davis (2015), Alves (2014), Mauney (2009, 2013), Robson Palermo (2008, 2011, 2012), Nunes (2010), Wiley Petersen (2007), L.J. Jenkins (2006), Marchi (2005), Lee (2004), Jody Newberry (2003), J.W. Hart (2002), Luke Snyder (2001), Tater Porter (2000), Ty Murray (1999), Reed Corder (1998), Dunn (1995, 1997) and Ronny Kitchens (1996).

In 2022, the battle between the organization’s animal athletes was also fierce, with Ridin Solo (Cord McCoy/Bill McCarty) emerging the best to be anointed the 2022 YETI PBR World Champion Bull.

Ridin Solo began the World Finals tied with then-reigning World Champion Bull Woopaa (Barker Bulls/Hookin’ W Ranch) for the world No. 1 rank.

First bucking in Round 2, compliments of his 45-point effort with Josh Frost (Randlett, Utah), Ridin Solo broke his tie with Woopaa for the top rank, pulling ahead by 0.25 points.

Ridin Solo and Woopaa then returned to the lineup in Round 4. In what was the third-best bull score of the 2022 PBR World Finals, Ridin Solo was marked 47 points, while Woopaa was awarded just 45.25, allowing Ridin Solo to further grow his lead.

On Championship Sunday, Ridin Solo was unrivaled.

Drawn by Vieira, the Cord McCoy standout quickly upended the Brazilian in 4.8 seconds to earn his second 47-point bull score of the weekend.

Ridin Solo’s head-turning out, coupled with Woopaa’s 41.75-point trip that earned Luciano de Castro (Guzolandia, Brazil) a re-ride, clinched the 2022 YETI PBR World Champion Bull honor and accompanying $100,000 bonus for the striking animal athlete.

Ridin Solo concluded the 2022 season with a 46.47-point world average, 0.69 points ahead of runner-up Woopaa.

The bull riding action for the 2023 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast begins with Rounds 1-2 on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13 at 7:45 p.m. CT, followed by Round 3 on Sunday, May 14 at 1:45 p.m. CT. The season-end event will continue with Rounds 4-6 on Thursday, May 18, Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at 7:45 p.m. CT, and come to a climactic end with Round 7 and the championship round on Sunday, May 21 at 1:45 p.m. CT.

The first six rounds will feature all 40 competing riders matched against the toughest bulls. Following the conclusion of Round 6 on Saturday, May 20, a minimum of 30 riders will advance to Round 7 on Sunday, May 21. All riders who record a score in the previous rounds will advance. Should that field be fewer than 30 contenders, riders will be drawn back by world rank until the 30-rider round is filled.

Following Round 7, the scores from the seven outs will be combined and the Top 12 riders will advance for an additional round of competition. Following the championship round, the rider with the top aggregate score at the event will be named the 2023 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast event winner, and the rider with the most Unleash The Beast points will be crowned the 2023 PBR World Champion, earning the coveted gold buckle.

The PBR World Finals is bull riding’s richest event. In addition to paying out the $1 million bonus to the 2023 PBR World Champion, the World Finals event winner will receive $300,000 and each round winner will collect $35,000.

By the Numbers: 2023 Unleash the Beast Regular Season Set to Conclude in Louisville, Kentucky

PUEBLO, Colo. – There’s a lot going on around PBR these days.

With this weekend’s PBR Cooper Tires Invitational, presented by Kubota, in Louisville, Kentucky, marking the final regular season event of the year, it’s time to spring into action!

Riders will get to enjoy a weekend of rest following the premier series finale, unless they’re set to compete in next weekend’s Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals, that is!

With familiar faces like Dawson Branton, Josh Frost, Austin Richardson and beyond ranking within the PWVT’s Top 10 heading into the weekend, it’s possible we see some riders pull double duty in chasing a pair of championships.

After all, a few guaranteed spots at the 2023 World Finals are up for grabs for the top finishers in the talent-building tour.

Regardless of attending the action in Corpus Christi May 5-6 for the PWVT finale, the best cowboys in the country will assemble May 12 in Fort Worth, Texas, to kick off another seven rounds of action-packed bull riding.

With the 2023 PBR Team Series Draft set to take place May 17 down south as the next wave of 5-on-5 talent is welcomed to their respective teams, the 2023 Rookie of the Year race staying spicy and the most elite bovines in the business continuing to buck their way to greatness, it’s a great time to be cowboy!

As this weekend’s showcase inside KFC Yum! Center is set to kick off Saturday, April 30, PBR.com is taking a look at some of the statistical stories and numerical takeaways from this year’s electric Unleash The Beast action!

11 straight : Turning up the temperature with World Finals around the corner is a popular strategy for riders throughout the premier series pack. Whether it’s coming back from an injury and giving it a go before the season-end event or ramping up workout routines and seeing a few more practice bulls, now is the time to be firing on all cylinders. The difference is actually finding success with that added heat, though. For guys like Eduardo Aparecido , who have been “warm” all season long, it’s about turning those quality performances into event-best showcases.

With at least one qualified ride in his last 11 Unleash The Beast appearances, the PBR Gwinnet Chute Out in Duluth, Georgia, on Jan. 20-22 marks the last non-15/15 bucking battle in which he didn’t log a ride, while he’s managed to finish within the Top 11 in his last five events (11th, 1st, 11th, 2nd, 5th). Now ranked No. 8 in the race to be crowned the 2023 PBR World Champion, he’s racked up an impressive 247 UTB points in those five events, including a juicy 137 UTB points for his first-place finish in Everett, Washington, April 20. The win represented the 32-year-old’s first event title in five years, but since finishing within the Top 27 at year’s end for the past decade, the talented Brazilian knows what it takes to make a run, as eight of those 10 favorable finishes have come within the Top 14.

First 1st : While it was Aparecido who exited the rare midweek competition in first place, Chase Dougherty made up for some early-season struggles (as he returned from gruesome injuries sustained during last summer’s PBR Team Series action) Sunday evening in Tacoma, Washington, by capturing his first-ever premier series event title. Bowing to the rowdy crowd three times throughout the showcase as the only cowboy to post a flawless 3-for-3 record, the Oregon-born 24-year-old brought his best to the Pacific Northwest. Earning a welcomed 148.5 UTB points for the win, he’s now got a pair of Top 10 finishes in his last three UTB appearances after placing seventh in Billings, Montana the previous weekend. Since making his 2023 debut Jan. 9 during the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s stop at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, where he immediately found success courtesy of his perfect, 3-for-3 performance, he’s participated in a variety of PWVT, UTB and Touring Pro Division events in returning to his top-tier form. With No. 16 and No. 13 year-end finishes under his belt from the past two seasons, he’ll look to continue to climb the ranks after jumping to No. 26 Sunday via his big win.

Doubling Down in the Short Round: Entering the competition outside of the World Finals cutline at No. 45, Dougherty began his dominant weekend with a little revenge by besting Don Juan in Round 1 for 84.5 points after being dispatched from the animal athlete earlier this month in Nampa, Idaho. Later assuming the event lead and capturing the Round 2 victory thanks to an 87.5-point conversion aboard Whiplash Sunday afternoon, Dougherty was enjoying his first 2-for-2 start of the season within his home region. With the first pick in the championship round bull draft, he chose a matchup with Short Circuit . Watching on as his 11 short round opponents attempted to meet the 8 against the revered pack of bovines, it was only No. 1 Kaique Pacheco and No. 9 Dener Barbosa who were able to convert in Sunday’s championship round. Eventually posting an 89.5-point effort atop Short Circuit, Dougherty completed the sweep while logging the pack’s third collective ride in the short round, a feat which has only occurred twice in the past seven events (Tacoma and Everett) as the bulls continue to show their best ahead of next month’s World Finals showdown. Just three days prior, it was Eduardo Aparecido, Braidy Randolph and Boudreaux Campbell who combined efforts to produce the first three-ride short round session in nearly a month and a half, dating all the way back to March 11 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Third Time’s Charm : Helping the pack reach what has become a coveted three-ride mark, No. 1 Kaique Pacheco needed a little bit of help to make Sunday’s championship go. Sitting in 13th place of the event with his 83.75-point conversion aboard Whatever on the board, Pacheco was originally scheduled to miss the short round, but with Kyler Oliver getting injured during his Round 2 matchup against Sock Monkey , the 2018 World Champion was able to compete as the last man in. Initially paired against Rock of Ages , Pacheco declined his 67-point score after being offered a re-ride for the less than ideal out. Next up in the re-ride pen, a bull by the name of Cherry Bomb hoped to test the Brazilians’ talents, but after drawing another set of red flags en route to dispatching Pacheco in a close 7.65 points, it wasn’t enough to send the No. 1-ranked rider home. Marking his fifth bull of the weekend, and eighth bovine attempted in five days, Pacheco was able to bring home an 83-point prize atop Razzmatazz but suffered a lower-body injury during his dismount when the bull slammed into Pacheco. Despite exiting the arena via stretcher, the UTB points leader shared some passion via verbal approval when he heard his ride was successfully scored. With his availability for this weekend’s regular season finale in Louisville, Kentucky, very much up the air, he may be best suited sitting out the competition and enjoying a few weeks of rest before the 2023 World Finals invade Fort Worth, Texas, May 12-21 as the pack dukes it out for the year-end honors. Earning 63.5 UTB points for the silver finish en route to extending his lead to 182 points over No. 2 Jose Vitor Leme , if there’s anyone who can afford an extra week of recuperation, it’s the Ice Man.

No. 9: Capping off a weekend in which the 28-year-old collected a combined 102.83 UTB points for a pair of Top 11 finishes, Dener Barbosa followed up his 11th place finish in Everett with a runner-up effort in Tacoma. Getting on the board Saturday night with an 86.5-point ride atop Scrapper, he was dispatched from his Round 2 opponent Pearl Ghost in 5.09 seconds, but still managed to secure a spot in the championship round. As one of three riders to meet the requisite 8, Barbosa was scored 88.25 points against Top Shelf as the Brazilian converted for just the second time in eight short go attempts all season. With six Top 10 finishes (including a pair of runner-up efforts and a bronze result) and a 15/15 Bucking Battle win in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on his resume this year, he’ll be one of many threats looking to make some noise at World Finals. With 21 qualified rides to date, he sits tied with No. 2 Jose Vitor Leme for fifth-most among all riders, while his 44.7 ride percentage ranks seventh-best overall and fifth-best among riders who have logged at least 40 outs.

Tie @ 44.5: With the PBR World Finals less than three weeks away, the talented animal athletes of the premier series tour haven’t been holding back. While it was Mike’s Motive who took home Bull of the Event honors Thursday evening in Everett by dispatching rookie Rafael Jose de Brito in a stunning 1.21 seconds for a 44.25-point bull score, five different bovines posted matching 44.5-point marks in Tacoma a few nights later. War Department earned the score first, pairing up with Eduardo Aparecido for an 89-point score in Round 2. The other four event-best scores came in the short round, as Blood Moon helped Aparecido to a weekend-high 91 points, Domino forced Daniel Keeping to the dirt in a heartbreaking 7.3 seconds, Top Shelf found success against Tate Pollmeier in 3.64 seconds and finally, Sky Walker was able to best Guilherme Valleiras in 2.47 seconds. No. 1 Cool Whip wasn’t in action this past week, but with a perfect 12-0 record and 44-point average bull score, he’s locked into next month’s action as the best bulls in the world prepare to challenge the UTB pack inside Dickies Arena May 12-21.

18 + 21 = 39: Seeing 18 qualified rides in Everett before combining for 21 conversions Saturday and Sunday in Tacoma, the pack successfully rode 39 total bulls throughout the pair of two-day events. While the qualified ride figures have been a bit of a roller coaster throughout the 22-event season schedule so far, it’s an encouraging sign that overall health is trending in a better direction. The surprising comparison: The premier series tour combined to produce 39 rides in a single event earlier this year, when the pack was on fire in New York City as 2023 began. Once upon a time, the weekend before in Albany, New York, a season-high 40 rides were logged, but somehow, none of the scores met the 90-point mark.

This weekend’s two-day slate in Louisville is scheduled to begin with Round 1 on Saturday, April 29 at 6:45 p.m. ET, with the opening round of action set to air live on RidePass on Pluto TV. Sunday’s second round, followed by the championship go, will start at 1:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 30, with the weekend’s Bucking Battle set to air on CBS at 2 p.m. ET, while the championship round will air on CBS Sports Network later Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Fans can stay tuned to PBR.com and PBR social media channels throughout the weekend for the latest scores, updates, wrecks and beyond as the 2023 Unleash The Beast regular season slate comes to a conclusion!
