The 10 Best Weekend Getaways In Texas For The Ultimate Lone Star Trip

Whether you want small-town charm, scenic views, or outdoor adventures, you'll find it at these incredible destinations.

vacation trip in texas

The good thing about Texas being as big as it is—almost 270,000 square miles to be exact—is that it means there is no shortage of destinations worth visiting for a packed-full weekend. Texas has small towns that feel like a charming step back in time, big cities with vibrant culture, and scenic nature parks that offer endless outdoor adventure. Basically, you won't be getting bored or be left short on Lone Star spirit, whether you're looking for a seasonal escape, family outing, or girlfriends' trip. While you might not be able to visit every one of these 10 best Texas weekend getaways, you can certainly try.

Here are our favorite recommendations for weekend trips in Texas.

Fredericksburg

Located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is the perfect small-town destination and is easily accessible for a weekend jaunt from all of Texas' big cities. The town dates back to 1846 when German immigrants founded it and still maintains its authentic German heritage to this day. From over 100 wineries and tasting rooms to a Main Street bustling with shops, galleries, restaurants, and biergartens, there are plenty of things to do when visiting Fredericksburg.

Head to  Old German Bakery & Restaurant  for a hearty breakfast, and make sure to get the German pancake. Book the  290 Wine Shuttle  for safe all-day transportation between the wineries. Visit  Enchanted Rock State Park , which is a big pink granite dome you can hike for amazing views.

Fort Worth is a destination both charmingly stuck in time and filled with new life. You'll still find remnants of a bygone era, like weekly rodeos, honky-tonks, and a working herd of hometown cattle. You can also find new museums, restaurants, watering holes, and a renovated entertainment hub, Mule Alley, in the National Historic District.

You'll find heritage-brand stores like  Lucchese Bootmaker  and  King Ranch Saddle Shop  for shopping. Grab a bottled cocktail in a souvenir flask from Second Rodeo Brewing , with ample indoor-outdoor seating. Finally, watch the twice-daily cattle drive down the main street near Cowtown Coliseum.

Port Aransas

This old-school fishing village has long been a nostalgic vacation spot for generations of Texas families. Head across the car ferry to Mustang Island—the flat, narrow barrier island where you'll find the town of Port Aransas. Fishing charters remain a draw for tourists on the Texas coast, but you can also enjoy calmer activities like bird-watching, laying on the beach, and eating all the fresh seafood.

For recreational boating,  The Scarlet Lady Dolphin Adventure  and  Dolphin Docks Deep Sea Fishing  run scenic cruises that showcase the area's friendly seafaring mammals, which can be seen swimming all around the island. Book a nighttime GlowRow tour, which sets out after dark and offers a unique view of sea life through clear kayaks lined with neon LED lights.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels is a historic town at the confluence of the Comal and Guadalupe rivers in the Texas Hill Country, situated between Austin and San Antonio. You're able to grab a tube and float down the rivers at leisure, making this town perfect for spring and summer visits. You'll also find the Gruene Historic District, which is home to the oldest dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall.

There’s live music every night at Gruene Hall , so grab a pair of cowboy boots and hit the dance floor. Grab dinner at  The Gristmill Restaurant (get the chicken-friend steak!) perched under Gruene’s iconic water tower in the 19th-century cotton gin ruins, or sample a wine tasting flight at  The Grapevine , where Texas wines make up most selections.

For those wanting a real Texas adventure, head out west to Terlingua and nearby parks, Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. Known as a ghost town (resulting from an abandoned mining company) that turned into a remote tourist enclave, this town has just enough funk. Plus, you'll find plenty of glamping sites to stay while you're there.

Stay at the charming  La Posada Milagro Guesthouse , and walk over to  Starlight Theatre Restaurant and Saloon , an all-in-one eatery, live-music venue, and community hub that has been a gathering spot for decades. Set out exploring with equipment or a guide from  Big Bend Boating and Hiking .

San Antonio

This cultural hub is a fabulous escape for exploring the River Walk and eating your way through authentic Tex-Mex. Historic Market Square  and  The Alamo are the heart of River Walk tourism, and for good reason. Fiesta, the city's annual springtime festival, is typically centered there every April. The extravaganza lasts over a week and is—at its core—a celebration of culture in the loudest, brightest, and most exuberant sense.

Grab a sweet treat at Mi Tierra Café y Panadería , an 80-year-old family bakery and restaurant that's known for offering over a dozen different kinds of pan dulce, a traditional Mexican sweet bread. The Pearl's Bottling Department , San Antonio's first food hall, has dining options that run the gamut, and you can stay at the accompanying Hotel Emma , built inside the old brewhouse.

Boerne (pronounced BUR-nee) sits in the Texas Hill Country and is a top pick for those searching for nostalgic joys: a root beer float from an old-school sweet shop, a welcoming smile on its colorful Main Street, or a spontaneous dunk into the Guadalupe River. Most of the big action in Boerne is centered on a lively downtown district known as the Hill Country Mile, which consists of the Main Street drag lined with dozens of antique shops and specialty stores.

Visit The Dienger Trading Co. , which is housed in a 137-year-old grocery store building and is a multipronged shop with a bistro, bakery, and boutique all under one roof. Book one of the 34 rooms at  The Kendall , a boutique hotel in a restored circa-1859 stagecoach stop, to be within walking distance of everything on Main Street.

This North Texas town is known for being a destination for wine lovers who like to explore the in-town tasting rooms and vineyards outside of town, but also as the ultimate Christmas small town. In fact, the state senate issued a proclamation more than a decade ago declaring this town the  Christmas Capital of Texas . Shop around the quaint downtown for gifts to take home.

Board the  Grapevine Vintage Railroad's Wine Train  to explore vineyards outside of town. Shops not to be missed are gourmet confectionery  Dr. Sue's Chocolate ,  Hole in the Wall  gift shop, and  Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Fine Art Gallery . Gather at  Hop & Sting Brewing Co.   for craft brews made with Texas-grown ingredients.

You'll find this town fitting for its name, as it's hidden quite deeply in Texas Hill Country. Remarkably, many Texans have never been to this rural area or even heard about the two state parks nestled covertly into the wild landscape. Utopia is located smack-dab in the middle of both Lost Maples State Natural Area and Garner State Park , which are family-friendly parks for camping and fall color.

In the remote area, find sustenance and a unique stay at Saturday-only restaurant The Laurel Tree and Treehouse Utopia . All four accommodations are built into centuries-old bald cypress trees.

The Texas state capital city has become known for its relaxed, laid-back vibe and vibrant live music scene, which are both easy to come by on a weekend trip. The best times of year to visit are spring and fall, when mild weather helps make the most of the many outdoor activities and venues. You can even take day trips over to nearby small towns Driftwood, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley to get your fill of Texas landscape and culture.

Stop by  The White Horse  in East Austin for free two-step dance lessons, or visit legendary spot  Broken Spoke  for lessons and live music. Take in the downtown skyline as you bike or run along  Lady Bird Lake  on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. Finally, enjoy classic Tex-Mex at Matt's El Rancho Tex-Mex , taco truck  Discada , and  La Barbecue  for Texas brisket.

13 Best Places to Visit in Texas, According to a Local

Whether you want buzzing city life or solitude in a small town, you can find it in Texas.

Jacob Bryant/EyeEm/Getty Images

As the largest contiguous state in the U.S., Texas is home to vast desert grasslands, dense forests, miles of beaches , rolling plains, and rugged hills. With more than 268,000 square miles making up the Lone Star State, there’s lots of room to roam and plenty of places to explore.

Whether you want a bustling city or quiet place to explore, you can find it in Texas, from the Panhandle Plains and Hill Country to the Gulf Coast and Piney Woods. Here, the best places to visit in Texas, according to a local.

Mariah Tyler ©

About 30 minutes west of the hustle and bustle that is Dallas lies Fort Worth, where world-class art museums and an excellent food and drink scene collide. And while Fort Worth is growing — it’s the 12th largest city in the U.S. — it still feels relaxed and approachable. Perhaps it’s that friendly Western hospitality and a range of dining options and activities that make it a win.

In the Cultural District , visitors can check out five museums dedicated to art, science, and local history. Of course, the Stockyards is a Fort Worth rite of passage, where the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive and year-round rodeo occurs. Downtown Fort Worth is another gem, with block after block of restaurants, Broadway shows at Bass Performance Hall , and nightlife in the form of pubs, bars, live music, comedy shows, and more. The Fort Worth Zoo remains one of the best in the U.S. today, too.

Austin , the state's quirky capital, is home to nearly one million people. Locals love to take advantage of the city’s numerous parks and public spaces, including Zilker Metropolitan Park , a 351-acre oasis with gorgeous views of the skyline and plenty of four-legged friends roaming about, as well as Barton Springs Pool , a three-acre, spring-fed pool used year-round for swimming. There are also lots of hiking trails throughout the city, including the 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake, the Barton Creek Greenbelt , and McKinney Falls State Park .

Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World, too, and there are numerous places to catch a show , including the annual Austin City Limits festival. One of the best perks, though, is the city's location near Hill Country, which provides easy access to charming small towns , rivers for floating, and more.

San Antonio

Under two hours south of Austin lies San Antonio, another cultural treasure Texans love to visit and call home. Known for the Alamo, this city is home to four other beautiful missions, all part of the UNESCO-designated San Antonio Missions National Historical Park . Of course, there’s also the beautiful River Walk , full of shopping and dining, and Market Square , where more than 100 vendors sell Mexican wares and cuisine.

San Antonio also brims with incredible museums such as the Witte Museum , McNay Art Museum , Briscoe Western Art Museum , and San Antonio Museum of Art .

Located at the southern edge of Texas Hill Country, San Antonio is also full of outdoor pursuits, including Government Canyon State Natural Area , where 12,00 acres and more than 40 miles of trails offer plenty of room to roam. There’s also river access all around for fishing, swimming, and floating.

If you’re looking to explore the vast Big Bend area, Terlingua is a great base camp. Located in between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park , this former mining town became one of the country’s largest producers of quicksilver in the early 20th century, later transforming into a ghost town when the mine closed.

Terlingua is also home to two renowned chili cook-offs, which bring in thousands each fall. Hike through the state or national park, or rent a canoe and float down the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Back in town, the Starlight Theatre Restaurant and Saloon is a must for dinner and live music, as it was known as the theater in town for miners back in its heyday. The Terlingua Cemetery, home to a few graves with quirky embellishments, is one of the most photographed in Texas.

There’s also lots of great art throughout town. Stop by a local gallery for mosaics, paintings, photography, and more, and don’t miss the Terlingua Trading Company for souvenirs, art, and gifts. Foodies will enjoy Taqueria El Milagro for its tacos and Tex-Mex plates, while Long Draw Pizza serves up delicious specialty pizzas like the Terlingua Spur (fajita chicken, onions, jalapeno, cheddar, mozzarella, barbecue sauce, and marinara).

Mustang Island

Courtesy of Visit Port Aransas

Named for the wild horses that inhabited the area for hundreds of years, Mustang Island, just south of Port Aransas, is a barrier island that’s ideal for those seeking a beach escape without the crowds found along the Texas coast. Visit Mustang Island State Park , where more than five miles of coastline offer swimming, fishing, kayaking, and beachcombing. The island is also a great destination for wildlife enthusiasts, as 400-plus bird species have been identified here, plus sea turtles can be spotted nesting. Adventure lovers can parasail or try their hand at surfing, or cast a line during an offshore fishing excursion.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

In West Texas near the New Mexico state line, you’ll find Guadalupe Mountains National Park , which includes the four highest peaks in Texas. The park has more than 80 miles of hiking trails, from easy walks to all-day endeavors that require a bit of planning. Trek to the "Top of Texas" (a.k.a. Guadalupe Peak), an 8.4-mile hike with views from the highest point in the state, at 8,751 feet. Here, surrounded by vast terrain, you can see the surrounding mountains and a seemingly never-ending expanse of the desert. Guadalupe Mountains National Park is part of the world’s most extensive Permian fossil reef complex, Capitan Reef, and other activities include backpacking, camping, horseback riding, and birding.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Texas is home to the second largest canyon in the U.S., and it’s found at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Panhandle. Here, the canyon sprawls for roughly 120 miles and is about 20 miles wide and up to 800 feet deep in some places. As you hike, you’ll notice four geologic layers that make up the canyon, which began forming a million years ago.

Aside from 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, the park has 1,500 acres dedicated to horseback riding. Catch the " Texas Outdoor Musical " show in the summertime at the amphitheater, and learn about the struggles and successes of early Texas settlers. Campsites and cabins are available, but new to the park are luxury glamping sites with covered porches with swings, air conditioning, fire pits, bicycles, and rustic decor.

This iconic Texas town is a trek, but it’s worth the drive. Marfa is an artistic oasis, full of galleries, boutiques, museums, and stand-alone art pieces. The Chinati Foundation is a contemporary art museum with pieces inspired from the surrounding landscape; guided tours are available. There’s also Ballroom Marfa , another contemporary art museum that strives to give artists and musicians a platform in the Big Bend area.

Toast to a great day at Marfa Spirit Co. , where rum, sotol, vodka, and more are blended into signature cocktails, and grab a tasty burrito from Marfa Burrito. For a cool souvenir, stop by Marfa Book Co. , and when it comes to where to stay, there are loads of quirky-cool options such as Chinati Hot Springs cabins , El Cosmico , Hotel Paisano , and Hotel Saint George .

While here, don't miss the Marfa Lights, a mysterious dancing light phenomenon that occurs southeast of town. The lights appear in a few different colors, and the cause is still argued today.

Fredericksburg

Dennis Garrels/Getty Images

Located in Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a well-known destination for local and out-of-state tourists looking for an escape. Home to about 11,000 people, this small city is situated in the middle of Texas wine country , with more than 50 wineries, tasting rooms, and vineyards in the county.

There are also lots of shuttle options in Fredericksburg that take visitors to wineries outside of town, plus breweries and distilleries dotting the area. Nature lovers have an array of options as well, including rock climbing and hiking at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area , plus cycling and horseback riding through parks and backroads across town. For shopping and dining, head to Main Street, where you’ll find more than 150 boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and museums.

New Braunfels

Roberto Galan/Getty Images

Between Austin and San Antonio lies New Braunfels, a charming Hill Country city founded by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. In the summer months, visitors flock here to float the Guadalupe and Comal rivers, both located in New Braunfels and a favorite way to spend a long, hot day.

Back in town, Texas-German architecture lines the downtown streets, where you’ll find boutique shopping, a developing bar and restaurant scene, museums, and art galleries. New Braunfels is also home to historic Gruene and Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas and a beloved live music venue today.

Courtesy of Visit Georgetown

A suburb of Austin, Georgetown has plenty of parks and outdoor space for adventure, including Lake Georgetown, where you can picnic, swim, and hike around the water on a 26.5-mile trail. In the downtown square, you’ll find everything from fine jewelry and boutique clothing to guitars and gourmet foods. Each year, Georgetown hosts the annual Red Poppy Festival , plus a summer concert series, and the Georgetown Wine and Music Festival. Whether you want room to roam or a great place for restaurants and shopping, this city delivers.

Denton, north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, is a college town with two universities: the University of North Texas (UNT) and Texas Woman’s University. The city has a fun, quirky vibe, but still holds onto a small-town feel with a cute downtown square and pocket after pocket of charming neighborhoods. The creative scene here is huge, too, from a thriving liberal arts program at UNT to community organizations showcasing and promoting local artwork and performing arts. Surrounding the 19th-century courthouse are lots of local restaurants and shops to explore, including a bookstore, an ice cream parlor, and bars serving cocktails. In the fall, catch a UNT football game at Apogee Stadium and cheer on the Mean Green in a sea of green and white.

Rockport-Fulton

Lupe Chacon/Getty Images

If a beach town is what you’re after, then Rockport-Fulton might be the ticket. It’s quieter and not as touristy as Galveston or South Padre Island, but it still offers plenty of fun in the form of outdoor exploration, coastal dining, and history. Rockport-Fulton has a booming arts scene, and the Rockport Center for the Arts holds classes and workshops and has rotating exhibitions.

Birders love the area, too, as hundreds of species migrate through the area or call it home. Adventurers love to explore the coastline via kayak or boat, or head to one of the piers for fishing. Geocaching, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, and windsurfing are popular pastimes as well. More than 30 locally owned restaurants provide an array of dining options, and the sunsets here are some of the best along the Gulf Coast.

So you want to visit the best places in Texas ? Then get prepared to embrace the open road because the Lone Star State is far from small!

While it’s possible to visit a number of Texas' big attractions in one trip, combining several popular destinations will likely require a rental car and a long drive – or two. If you want to see both Austin and Big Bend National Park, for example, be prepared for an eight-hour road trip (one way).

If you want to visit both San Antonio and Dallas, gear up for a five-hour trek on Interstate Highway 35. Although there are enough Willie Nelson albums to fill over 70 hours of driving, we’ve grouped some of the state’s best destinations by region to help you get around more easily and make the most of your time in the Lone Star State.

Best city for live music

Austin became the capital of Texas in 1846, and the University of Texas was established in 1883. For about a hundred years, the city remained a sleepy college town and political seat until the tech boom of the 1980s attracted more businesses and residents. Known for its rich history of live music thanks to televised performances from the Austin City Limits studios, the city is still the best spot in Texas to catch a troubadour on every corner.

Be sure to browse the local boutiques on South Congress Avenue, such as Allens Boots . Founded in 1977, the store’s red boot sign and extensive collection of Western wear have made it a go-to shopping destination for decades. Two-step across the street to South Congress Hotel for a drink in the hotel’s lobby bar before catching live music at the legendary Continental Club down the street.

Planning tip:  If you're visiting in summer, join the locals and escape the city heat with a kayaking adventure on one of Austin's many waterways.

2. Texas Hill Country

Best place for breweries and vineyards

A trip to Austin or San Antonio pairs well with a day trip or short venture to Texas Hill Country , where wine lovers and beer experts will feel equally at home. Visit Altstadt Brewery for a tour and taste of German-style beer, or head to William Chris Vineyard in Hye for an afternoon among the grapes.

Southold Farm and Cellar is another top vineyard in the region, but if alcohol isn’t your thing, make a pit stop at any of the local peach stands along Highway 290 for a sweet taste of summer. For an outdoor adventure, take in the views from nearby Enchanted Rock, or watch the bats emerge from the abandoned railroad tunnel at Old Tunnel State Park .

3. San Antonio

Best place for top Texas attractions

Some of Texas' best things to do are in San Antonio. While no trip is complete without a visit to The Alamo , there are several other worthwhile museums and attractions in San Antonio. Be sure to wander the Pearl Brewery Complex , where the swanky Hotel Emma holds court as queen of luxury. Try a drink in the hotel’s Sternewirth bar, where you can sip a cocktail in one of the renovated silos from the bygone brewery.

A short drive to the Witte Museum will give you an immersive experience of Texas history, while an afternoon at the McNay Art Museum is the ideal spot for a picnic on the grounds after wandering the galleries.

Planning tip:  Stretch your budget by visiting the Witte Museum on a Tuesday – it's free to enter between 3pm and 6pm.

Best place for space exploration

Houston also boasts its share of galleries, especially the Menil Collection , whose vast exhibits span human history from the Paleolithic era to the 20th Century and contemporary art. But the biggest draw to Houston is NASA’s  Johnson Space Center , home to Mission Control, which led the Gemini and Apollo missions and the first lunar landing.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the history and future of space exploration, as well as a glimpse of artifacts such as spacecraft and the largest collection of moon rocks on public display.

Planning tip:  Visiting Houston with the tots in tow? Check the Space Center's schedule and book the kids into a day-long Explorer Camp that will have them reaching for the stars.

People sunning on Galveston Beach in Texas

5. Galveston

Best place for a beach party

Not far from Houston is the port town of Galveston , which was once one of the largest port cities in North America before it was devastated by a deadly hurricane in 1900. Today, the island city remains a top Gulf Coast destination and one of the state’s best beach towns.

Go ghost hunting at the historic Grand Galvez or head to the Bryan Museum for a chronological exhibit of Texas history and an impressive collection of local art. Animal lovers will enjoy the aquarium and rainforest exhibits at Moody Gardens , while architecture aficionados will appreciate a walking tour of the historic churches and homes like Bishop’s Palace .

Best place to become a brewmaster

About halfway between San Antonio and Houston, Shiner is home to one of the state’s oldest and most popular breweries, the Spoetzl Brewery . Take a tour of the brewery, which started as a tin house in 1909, to learn how the Bavarian beer was first made by Kosmos Spoetzl. Then, sample different Shiner brews from the current brewmaster, who is only the sixth in the history of the company.

Combine the trip with a drive through Gonzalez, where the first shots of the Texas Revolution were fired in October 1835. Or venture slightly further for a walk through the jungle-like trails of Palmetto State Park .

Best place for sports fans

Among the many reasons to visit Dallas is the plethora of professional sports teams in the area. Whether you’re a fan of football, baseball, basketball or hockey, Dallas is home to several state-of-the-art arenas and stadiums, such as the American Airlines Center, which hosts both the NHL’s Dallas Stars and the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Nearby Arlington hosts both the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and the MLB’s Texas Rangers. Downtown Dallas is also a great option for art lovers, and the Nasher Sculpture Center and nearby Crow Museum of Asian Art are quieter attractions for a rainy day.

Planning tip:  Adventure fans, this is your time to rejoice! The first ever Six Flags theme park was established in Dallas and is still thrilling visitors to this day . Bring the whole family – there is no shortage of rollercoasters for everyone.

Senior woman walking on trail trough cactus, yucca plant and rocks in Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA

8. Big Bend National Park

Best place for hiking in the great outdoors

Texas’ only national park is also one of the largest in the country, as well as the least visited thanks to its remote location. Separated from neighboring Mexico by the Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park is known for its scenic vistas and many hiking trails. Over 1200 plant species call the park home, along with over 450 species of birds. The South Rim Trail is also one of the best hikes in the whole of Texas.

But celestial beings remain one of the park’s biggest draws – certified as an International Dark Sky, the park boasts some of the best stargazing in the continental US. The Santa Elena Canyon is a main attraction, where temperatures can rise above 110F (43C) in the summer. Enjoy slightly lower temps in the Chisos Mountains, which offer lodging and unforgettable views over the whole park.

Admire art at Cadillac Ranch

Top things to do in Texas

Courtesy of Cadillac Ranch

This quirky art installation, dating back to 1974, features 10 Cadillacs buried nose-down in an empty and dusty field off of iconic Route 66 and I-40, approximately 10 miles southwest of Amarillo. A group of art hippies from San Francisco, known as The Ant Farm, created the offbeat installation silently funded by the eccentric billionaire Stanley Marsh 3. His goal was to baffle the local residents with a public art display. The Ant Farm responded to his wishes with the creation of this bewildering memorial to the Cadillac's tail fin evolution from the 1949 Club Sedan to the 1963 Cadillac de Ville. Over the years, the cars have been defaced, stripped and splashed with DayGlo paint and graffiti, but it still remains one of the most popular roadside attractions for travelers visiting Texas from around the world. If you're headed into Amarillo after your visit to Cadillac Ranch to see a little more of the Texas Panhandle, plan to stay at The Barfield, Autograph Collection. Located in the historic Barfield building, this boutique hotel is an excellent choice for accommodations in downtown.

Other highlights include McKittrick Canyon, especially during fall foliage season, the 2,000-acre Salt Basin Dunes and the Frijole Ranch Museum, which documents the area's settlements from the early Native Americans to ranchers in the 1900s. For overnight stays under the starry skies, pack up the tent and reserve a spot at Pine Springs or Dog Canyon campgrounds. It's important to know that there are no paved roads, no gas or supplies for 35 miles and very few amenities in this remote park.

Enjoy history and adventure at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site

Top things to do in Texas

Courtesy of the Texas Historical Commission

Established by a group of Caddo Indians, this village in Alto (about 150 miles southeast of Dallas) dates back more than 1,200 years. Located in the Piney Woods region in East Texas, the village was the southernmost location for the Mississippi Mound Builder Culture. Three of these ceremonial mounds still exist today. The Caddo Indians remained in this area until the 1830s, when Anglo-American colonization efforts forced them to move to the Brazos River. After another relocation, they finally settled in western Oklahoma in what's known today as the Caddo Nation Headquarters. Self-guided and guided tours are available to visit the ancient site, and walk along the two interpretive trails, a part of the El Camino Real de los Tejas. This 150-year-old 2,500-mile route through Texas and Louisiana contains many historic sites related to the battle for Texan independence, the growth of cattle ranching when Texas was part of Mexico and the efforts by the Spanish to missionize American Indians. At the Caddo Mounds, there's also a visitors center and museum store where you can learn more about of this significant part of Native American history. Some of the closest hotels are in downtown Nacogdoches (around 30 miles east), including the mid-century-style boutique property, The Fredonia.

25 Best Weekend Getaways in Texas

There is nowhere quite like the great–and gigantic–state of Texas, so it’s no surprise that there is an enormous number of fantastic weekend getaways in Texas to choose from!

Texas is (one of) our home state(s), and it is endlessly diverse, packing everything from deserts to cities to canyons to wine country into one incredibly epic state.

Texas is arguably the US state that we know best. We were both born there, I lived in Austin for a few years as a child, we’ve lived in both San Antonio and Austin together as adults, and having deep family roots in Austin means that even when we don’t call Texas home, we continually return to visit.

We compiled this list of the best Texas weekend trips based on our years of exploring the state, and quite honestly, writing this has made me deeply homesick for the Lone Star state!

If you’re looking to spend a few days exploring a new corner of the state, here are the best weekend getaways in Texas!

Note : After writing this post, we moved back to Austin for a year and launched Lone Star Travel Guide , our travel site dedicated entirely to Texas. If you’re looking for more Texas travel inspiration, we’d love to have you join us there!

Have a city break on your mind?

Texas’ major cities each have a flavor all their own–but any one of these cities would make for a perfect Texas weekend getaway!

Probably the best-known of all these weekend getaways in Texas on the overall domestic and international tourism scene, Austin is known for its live music, incredible festivals (most notably the famous SXSW), and excellent food.

Be sure to stroll through Zilker Park or head out onto Lady Bird Lake, hit up the boutiques and street art around South Congress , check out the State Capitol, visit Mount Bonnell, and sample a bit of Austin’s famous nightlife during your weekend in Austin .

San Antonio

Home to Texas’ most famous building (the Alamo), our former home city of San Antonio is easily one of the best cities for weekend trips in Texas.

Yes, check out the Alamo, but get beyond it too: San Antonio is home to Texas’ only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 18th-century San Antonio Missions, and the Alamo is one of only several properties to be included–and it’s arguably the least interesting of them all (personally, my favorites are Mission San Jose and Mission Espada).

While spending a weekend in San Antonio , you’ll no doubt want to hit the famous Riverwalk once or twice, but consider also visiting the Japanese Tea Garden, the incredible Witte Museum, and the Majestic Theater.

San Jose Mission in San Antonio Texas as seen through a stone window. San Antonio is one of the best places to visit in Texas.

If everything is bigger in Texas, it might just be biggest in Dallas: known for big hair, big (oil) money, and big buildings, Dallas is a quintessentially Texan city–and also one of the fastest-growing cities in the USA, with an excellent food scene and plethora of things to do.

Of course, no weekend trip to Dallas would be complete without a somber exploration of the assassination of President Kennedy, whose murder in Dallas in 1963 is one of the most haunting in the USA’s collective memory.

On a lighter note, though, Dallas offers far more than morbid history: with phenomenal shopping (not even kidding, people from surrounding states flock to Dallas on the weekends for its shopping), excellent skyline views at Reunion Tower, and great gardens and museums (the Dallas Arboretum is stunning), you’ll find plenty of fun things to do during a weekend in Dallas .

You can even add on mini day trips to other places in the metro area, like Grapevine and Frisco, Texas !

View of Dallas skyline from Reunion Tower, one of the best weekend destinations in Texas

Though it’s easy to lump Fort Worth in with its more famous next-door neighbor of Dallas, the city is absolutely distinct and has a vibe all its own.

The Fort Worth Stockyards was the go-to spot for cowboys and livestock as they moved west during parts of the 19th century, but today, they are part of Ft. Worth’s popular historic district, where restaurants, bars, and honky-tonks at what was once the “Cowtown” where ranchers would stop with their livestock.

Be sure to also check out Fort Worth’s growing craft beer scene if you decide to check out this Texas weekend getaway, and of course, don’t forget to stop by Sundance Square!

Houston is a bit of an enigma when it comes to these weekend getaways in Texas: it doesn’t get a fraction of the attention on the tourist circuit that Austin or even San Antonio does, and yet, Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country and is home to one of the most interesting attractions in all of Texas: The Johnson Space Center.

Visiting one of the best space museums in the country isn’t the only reason to visit Houston, though: as the 4th largest city in the USA, Houston’s art and food scenes are not to be underestimated!

From Houston, you can also put together a fun day trip to Brenham , Galveston, or any number of East Texas destinations.

Texas’ enormous size translates to a wide variety of choices for the best nature-filled weekend getaways in Texas.

With two national parks and more than 80 state parks, not to mention plenty of campsites and Texas cabins to choose from, you may have a hard time narrowing it down–here are some of the best places to spend time outdoors during a weekend in Texas.

Big Bend National Park

With sweeping beauty that encompasses desert, mountain, and canyon landscapes in one park, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas is easily one of the best places for weekend trips in Texas.

In addition to hiking and beautiful nature, the park is also well-known for its dark skies, and as a result, is internationally recognized as a phenomenal place for stargazing.

Scenic road in Big Bend National Park, one of the best Texas weekend getaways

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas”, Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the USA and is home to truly unforgettable views.

Plan a weekend away to hike to the iconic Lighthouse, soak in the beauty of the canyon and the desert, and maybe try out some horseback riding or zip-lining while you’re there!

As Palo Duro Canyon is located less than an hour away from Amarillo and Texas’ portion of Route 66 , consider also adding stops at Amarillo’s Route 66 Historic District and the iconic Route 66 roadside attraction of Cadillac Ranch.

Float the River

If there’s one thing that Texans can agree on, it’s that grabbing an intertube, along with some snacks and drinks, and floating down a river with them is an excellent way to spend the summer.

The Frio River in Garner State Park and the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels are both incredibly popular places for this.

If you’re looking for one of the most local weekend getaways in Texas, you can’t go wrong with floating the river (and it’s safe to say that there are plenty of rivers to choose from ).

Drone photo from above of a Texas river with people floating in intertubes down it

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Located east of El Paso, the stunning Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the four highest peaks in Texas, located in the incredibly vast Chihuahuan Desert, and is also known for its incredible fall foliage.

With a surprisingly mild climate for much of the year, Guadalupe Mountains National Park makes for a fantastic Texas getaway destination.

Be sure to make time to hop across the New Mexico state line and visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park, too–it’s practically next door and is one of the coolest weekend trips near Texas.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

The most notable feature of Dinosaur Valley State Park can be easily guessed from its name: if you head down to the river, you’ll be able to spot actual dinosaur footsteps, fossilized and frozen in time, in the riverbed.

With 20 miles of trails and a river to enjoy, it’s safe to say that the fossils aren’t the only draw, either.

If you do head out to Dinosaur Valley State Park, be sure to spend some time in the charming town of Glen Rose, as well!

Pedernales Falls State Park (+ Johnson City)

Packed with both hiking trails and swimming holes (aka pools formed in between each of the small waterfalls in the river), Pedernales Falls State Park makes for an incredibly fun Texas weekend getaway, and one of my personal favorites dating back to childhood!

In addition to the park itself, it’s worth mentioning that Pedernales Falls is located practically next door to Johnson City , the former home of President Johnson (though, fun fact, the town is not named after the president or his family) and close to the current home of the LBJ Ranch, which is now a National Historic Site.

The Lone Star State’s small towns are among my absolute favorite places to visit in Texas: not only is the state littered with adorable, well-preserved 18th and 19th-century downtowns, you’ll also find a lot of lesser-known culture in them!

For example, while it’s well-known that Texan and Mexican cultures have close ties, how many non-Texans know that there are strong veins of German, Czech, and even Alsatian heritage still running through some of the best small towns in Texas ?

Here are some of the best small-town weekend getaways in Texas!

kate storm in a red dress in front of a historic building in johnson city, one of the best weekend getaways texas

Fredericksburg

Known for its prevalent German heritage and many, many wineries, Fredericksburg is the perfect Texas getaway for wine lovers!

With plenty of vineyards to choose from, not to mention a plethora of great restaurants and shops in town, Fredericksburg is easily among the top weekend getaways in Texas.

Some of the best things to do in Fredericksburg (beyond the wineries, that is), include shopping the boutiques on Main Street, visiting the National Museum of the Pacific War, day-tripping to the tiny town of Luckenbach, watching the bats at Old Tunnel State Park, and enjoying a hearty German meal or two.

Want to hike off all that good food?

Consider climbing nearby Enchanted Rock during your stay!

New Braunfels

Located between Austin and San Antonio, the originally German town of New Braunfels is one of the best-known weekend getaways in Texas for those who live in either Austin or San Antonio, partially because of access and partially because of how many classic Texas pastimes you can find there.

Whether you want to float the Guadalupe River, go dancing in the classic Gruene Hall, check out the original Schlitterbahn, or visit the incredible Natural Bridge Caverns, New Braunfels has you covered.

There are plenty of reasons that Ennis could qualify as one of the best small town weekend getaways in Texas–its cute historic district, great Czech food, and annual Polka festival among them–but the absolute best reason to spend a weekend in Ennis comes around in April: bluebonnet season.

Home to 40 miles of what is called the Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas, there is no better place to admire Texas’ iconic–and absolutely stunning–wildflowers each spring.

Once known primarily as the home of Baylor University, Waco is now even more widely known for something entirely different: home improvement, or more specifically, Chip and Joanna Gaines.

The Gaines, who are Waco locals, gained immense popularity with their HGTV show Fixer Upper and brought some of that fame home to Waco by opening up the Magnolia Market at the Silos in 2015.

Part store, part bakery, and part event space, the Silos (as they’re known around town) have propelled Waco onto the tourism map, drawing visitors from across the country to the small town of Waco.

The city has seen a predictable explosion of excellent restaurants and things to do in Waco thanks to the popularity of the Silos.

Home to just 13 official residents, the positively minuscule town of Luckenbach is well-known as a country music hotspot, with a popular dance hall and far more live shows than one would expect from a town of merely 13 people!

While it would take a serious amount of dedication to turn Luckenbach into a standalone Texas weekend destination, nearby attractions like Fredericksburg, Old Tunnel State Park, and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area can be combined with Luckenbach to form a fantastic getaway!

Known for its quirky art installations (complete with works by Andy Warhol in its small museum), the small town of Marfa, Texas is perhaps most famous for how utterly unexpected it is.

Featuring excellent food, a location near-ish to Big Bend National Park (hint: don’t try to day trip between the two), and the otherworldly Marfa Lights, Marfa is a captivating town that is all the more enchanting for the fact that it is located in the middle of nowhere.

Located deep in the desert of West Texas, Marfa is often said to be home to the smallest Prada store in the world–though it is never open.

The store (technically an art display) is actually located in nearby Valentine–but it’s a credit to the whimsy of Marfa that the installation is so strongly associated with the town despite having a (slightly) different address.

Set less than an hour from the state capital of Austin, the  delightful town of Wimberley, Texas  is well-known in the Texas Hill Country for its artistic vibe, many whimsical touches (including 30 uniquely painted boot statues spread around town), its famous natural swimming holes, and its proximity to many vineyards and distilleries.

It also happens to be one of our personal favorite Hill Country towns!

The best things to do in Wimberley include going for a swim in the infamous  Jacob’s Well  or Blue Hole during the summer (both of which you’ll need to snag advance reservations for), browsing art and antiques, doing a wine tasting (or several), and climbing Mount Baldy for excellent views of the Texas Hill Country.

Wimberley can be easily combined with a trip to Austin or even San Antonio and is within close proximity of other central Texas highlights like Fredericksburg, Johnson City, and Canyon Lake .

… But that being said, it also makes a fantastic standalone destination, and once you arrive, you may find it difficult to leave!

Dripping Springs

Located just outside of Austin and nestled in the Texas Hill Country, the small town of Dripping Springs is primarily known for two things: weddings and Hamilton Pool Preserve, which has become one of the most recognizable Texas landmarks over the last decade or so.

The many wineries surrounding Dripping Springs make it a prime wedding venue in Texas, though of course its vineyards, distilleries, and even olive farm all make the town worth visiting even without a wedding.

Then, of course, there’s Instagram-famous Hamilton Pool, the natural pool that was carved out of limestone when a river caved in thousands of years ago, leaving a refreshing hangout (complete with a 50-foot waterfall!) behind for generations of Texans to enjoy.

Beach Getaways in Texas

I’ll be perfectly honest: as both a lover of Texas and a lover of beaches, you’ll never catch me saying that Texas’ beaches are among the best in the country… but if you’re looking to soak up some saltwater and enjoy a laid-back beach town or two, you definitely have some solid weekend trips in Texas to choose from!

South Padre Island

Located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, South Padre Island is among the most popular weekend getaways in Texas for people hoping to hit the beach, from laid-back retirees to young families–but during Spring Break, it becomes the most popular party destination in Texas.

With long stretches of beach, a turtle sanctuary, and plenty of classic beach town activities, South Padre is arguably the most beloved beach getaway in Texas (though admittedly, if you grew up in Texas, that probably depends on where your family headed).

On a personal note, the island will always hold a special place in our hearts for the fact that we spent our first wedding anniversary there!

Port Aransas

Located on Mustang Island, charming Port Aransas is certainly one of Texas’ best beach getaways but is perhaps even better known for its many fishing opportunities and incredible dolphin sightings.

Be sure to head over to both Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island State Park to enjoy the many local beaches while there!

There’s a reason that Galveston is one of the best-known beach destinations in Texas!

Home to sandy beaches, plenty of fishing, the beautiful Strand Historic District, family-friendly amusement parks, and even stunning historical homes like Bishop’s Palace to tour, Galveston has something to offer all kinds of visitors–especially given its location, which makes it an incredibly convenient weekend getaway from Houston.

Want to focus your Texas weekend trip on thrilling rides and escaping the real world entirely?

Consider heading off to one of Texas’ major theme parks!

Six Flags Fiesta Texas (San Antonio)

Located in San Antonio and nestled next to a former quarry, Six Flags Fiesta Texas (and its attached water park, White Water Bay) is home to some incredible roller coasters (Poltergeist, Superman, and Iron Rattler were endlessly exciting for me as a child, and held up well into adulthood), as well as plenty of family-friendly options.

Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington)

The original Six Flags park (though not the oldest counting properties that the brand acquired later), Six Flags Over Texas is packed with rides and shows, including some truly incredible roller coasters–the New Texas Giant is among the most popular.

Opening in 1961 as the first park belonging to the Six Flags brand, it’s at this park you can peak into a bit of Texas history that has now become a national brand: “Six Flags” is a reference to the six flags that have ruled over Texas since the 1500s (Spain, France, Mexico, the USA, the Confederacy, and briefly, Texas itself as an independent nation).

More than 50 years later, Six Flags Over Texas endures as a beloved Texas weekend destination!

Schlitterbahn (New Braunfels)

While the Schlitterbahn brand has several parks now, the original–and biggest–is located in New Braunfels and has been open seasonally since 1979.

Half of Schlitterbahn New Braunfels uses spring-fed river water from the Comal River to feed its rides, making it one of the more nature-friendly water parks around.

Lone Star Travel Guide

7 Epic Texas Road Trip Itinerary Ideas

There’s absolutely no better way to explore the Lone Star State than on an epic Texas road trip, and we’ve created this road trip guide to show you some of the best ones around!

From Texas’ largest cities to its open plains, from its laid-back beach towns to its wine country, there is no shortage of variety when it comes to what you can experience in Texas.

Here are the best road trips in Texas–plus a few tips to keep in mind before you go.

Unforgettable Texas Road Trip Ideas

Austin to san antonio loop.

For first-time visitors to Texas and Lone Star State lovers alike, it’s hard to imagine a better short Texas road trip than the route between Austin and San Antonio –especially because it is so customizable!

While Austin and San Antonio are less than 2 hours apart (allegedly–traffic often has other plans), here are just a few things to you can potentially do on the way: float the river in New Braunfels , swim in Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs, shop in San Marcos, and eat some of Texas’ best barbecue in Lockhart.

View of Guadalupe River from above with Texans floating on it. Guadalupe River State Park is one of the best day trips from San Antonio TX

If you’d like to extend the trip, consider making a triangle between the two cities by adding a stop in Fredericksburg to enjoy some of Texas’ German history, drink local wine, and climb to the top of Enchanted Rock.

Plus, of course, there are the cities themselves: both Austin and San Antonio are home to enough fun things to do to keep you busy for weeks, from the Alamo to the Texas State Capitol and beyond.

Recommended Road Trip Length

Since the driving distances are so short for this road trip, a four or five day trip is enough to give you a nice overview of the area–but the sheer number of things to do nearby means that you could easily triple that time without getting bored!

Small Hill Country Towns + Outdoor Adventures

This Texas road trip also focuses on the general region between and around Austin and San Antonio–also known as the Texas Hill Country –but instead of focusing the trip on the area’s two large cities with a few stops along the way, this one is focused entirely on the countryside.

Starting from either Austin or San Antonio, head out into the Hill Country to explore the official Texas Wine Trail, stop by whimsical Wimberely to experience Jacob’s Well and its colorful downtown, scarf down German food in Fredericksburg , sample barbecue in Lockhart, swim in Dripping Springs, head to the LBJ Ranch, and stop by the positively tiny town of Luckenbach.

Be sure to also mix in plenty of outdoor beauty: Enchanted Rock , Pedernales Falls State Park, Natural Bridge Caverns, and Guadalupe River State Park (one of the most popular spots for floating the river ) are all accessible on this Texas road trip.

A week is long enough to have an incredibly memorable Texas Hill Country trip, though not long enough to see it all!

Kate Storm swinging over the Wimberley Blue Hole

Texas’ portion of Route 66 is fairly short–you can drive it straight across the panhandle in about 3 hours without stopping–but it definitely makes for a classic Texas road trip!

Along Route 66, by far the biggest city you’ll pass is Amarillo, where you should definitely stop to check out the Historic Route 66 District, the American Quarter Horse Museum, and–for the very, very hungry–the 72 oz. steak challenge at the Big Texan Steak Ranch (don’t worry, they have more human-sized portions on offer too).

You’ll definitely want to swing by Cadillac Ranch as well, located just west of Amarillo, for a sight that you just don’t see everyday: 10 Cadillacs with their frontends buried in a field, spray-painted within an inch of their lives.

Photo of Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo Texas, 10 cadillacs have their front ends buried in the dirt. All the cars are spray painted in a line.

Lesser-known Slug Bug Ranch (similar concept as Cadillac Ranch, but with slug bugs) is located on Route 66 as well, but on the eastern side of Amarillo.

Though it’s not technically on Route 66 itself, I also highly recommend swinging south of Amarillo to check out Palo Duro Canyon , the second-largest canyon in the USA and an unforgettable place to visit!

While you can easily drive Texas’ portion of Route 66 in a single day, we recommend spending a night or two in either Amarillo or Canyon to enjoy the nearby sights and some of the hikes in Palo Duro Canyon!

Wide Open Spaces in West Texas

West Texas is not only home to the sprawling, harsh desert landscapes that the Lone Star State is often associated with, it’s also home to both of Texas’ national parks, which can act as the backbone to a phenomenal Texas road trip.

After exploring some of the best things to do in El Paso , head to Guadalupe Mountains National Park for truly majestic landscapes (and depending on time, consider dipping across the border to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico as well).

From there, head off to Big Bend National Park: don’t miss hiking Santa Elena Canyon or admiring the views from Marshall Drive!

Road through Big Bend National Park, one of the best Texas road trip ideas

Nearby, you’ll find the lesser-known but still phenomenal cousin of Big Bend National Park: Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Along the way, consider stopping at the ghost town of Terlingua, the artsy town of Marfa (famous for its Prada store that never opens), and the McDonald Observatory, to fully appreciate the inky black night sky of West Texas.

In order to fully appreciate both national parks as well as Big Bend Ranch State Park while still leaving time for additional sightseeing along the way, we recommend taking around a week and a half to enjoy a West Texas road trip.

Dallas Loop Road Trip

For a Texas road trip with a fantastic mix of big cities, great food, charming small towns, and even a bit of nature, consider taking a road trip beginning and ending in Dallas.

Start off your trip by enjoying the best of Dallas and Ft. Worth, including the Arboretum, Reunion Tower, and Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, and the Stockyards in Ft. Worth.

From there, head down to Waco, where you’ll find the insanely popular Magnolia Market at the Silos, the beautiful campus of Baylor, Wooly Mammoth National Monument, and even a Dr. Pepper Museum (Texans are serious about Dr. Pepper).

View of Dallas skyline from Reunion Tower with iron bars framing the skyline

Be sure to stop along the way for kolaches in West, Texas!

Depending on the time of year and amount of time you have for your road trip, other destinations to mix in include Dublin (the original home of Dr. Pepper and a town with lots of Irish influences), Grapevine (one of the best Christmas destinations in Texas), Ennis (home to some of the best bluebonnet fields in the state during the spring) and Canton (adorable and historic, plus home to one of the best flea markets in Texas ).

A quick 3-day weekend is long enough to hit a few major sights in both Dallas and Ft. Worth and briefly see Waco as well, but for the full experience covering the great small towns near Dallas, 5-7 days would be a better time frame to work with.

Gulf Coast Road Trip

If you’re looking for a beach escape in Texas, you can’t do better than road tripping the southern section of the Gulf Coast.

Starting in Corpus Christi , head down the coast to charming Mustang Island before making your way down to South Padre to enjoy one of Texas’ most beloved beach escapes.

From riding horses on the beach to visiting a sea turtle sanctuary to, of course, simply enjoying the sun and waves, you’ll find plenty to do along the way.

Kate Storm riding a chestnut horse on the beach in South Padre Island Texas

Be sure to stop in Port Isabel to see Texas’ second-smallest state park and climb the 19th-century lighthouse for beautiful views of the town and water, too!

This road trip can be enjoyed over a 3-day weekend, though you’ll probably want to choose between visiting either South Padre or Mustang Island if you’re short on time.

To visit both islands and stop at fun spots like Port Isabel along the way, a week is a good time frame for this road trip in Texas.

Piney Woods Road Trip

Nothing puts the diversity of Texas on display quite as obviously as starting in the enormous metropolitan area of Houston and then driving due north, where very quickly, city will give way to green forest–a far cry from the desert landscapes of West Texas or the endless fields of the Panhandle that Texas is more likely to be associated with.

East Texas, though, is a whole different ball game, from the barbecue (generally served on a bun with sauce, unlike its better-known cousin from Central Texas) to the landscape.

For your Piney Woods road trip, stop by Davy Crockett National Forest to get an idea for what the nature in East Texas has to offer before heading onto towns like Palestine (one of the homes of the Texas State Railroad), Longview, Jefferson , Marshall, and Nacogdoches.

Caddo Lake in East Texas with cypress trees lining the lake

Caddo Lake State Park, with its beautiful bayous and Spanish moss, is also a must-see stop on an East Texas road trip.

Don’t forget to leave a little time for Houston itself: the Houston Space Center alone is worth the trip!

Starting and ending in Houston, you can get a good overview of the Piney Woods area in around a week–but consider extending your Texas road trip a bit to dip down south of Houston to enjoy the beaches of the Gulf Coast a bit, too!

Tricks + Tips for Road Trips in Texas

Don’t underestimate the distance involved in taking a texas road trip..

Fun fact: when you’re in El Paso, you’re closer to San Diego than Houston!

As the second-largest state in the USA, Texas covers a positively enormous amount of land–much of it extremely empty land, especially the further west you go–and therefore taking a road trip in Texas means planning strategically based on where in the state you are.

… and definitely don’t try to cover the whole state in one trip.

Unless you have the time and inclination to drive for thousands of miles, looping around the entirety of Texas’ most famous attractions is not realistic on a single Texas road trip.

The good news is, though, that that means there’s always a reason to come back!

Mission in San Antonio Texas as seen through a limestone opening in the wall

Stopping and Buc-ee’s and Rudy’s are important parts of any road trip in Texas.

Buc-ee’s has a bigger reputation, but Rudy’s has better breakfast tacos–in my opinion, anyway, but there are definitely those who vehemently disagree!

Either way, these iconic Texas institutions deserve to be part of any Texas road trip.

Rudy’s is a chain of barbecue restaurants with a side of selling gas and running a small general store, and Buc-ee’s is a gigantic gas station/souvenir shop/bakery/snack station with obsessively clean bathrooms and a beaver statue out front–and with a description like that, how can you not want to see it in person?

Texans drive fast, so be prepared!

The highest posted speed limit anywhere in Texas is 85 mph (70, 75, and 80 are more common, though), but on the long stretches of the open road, let’s just say that the speed limit can often, in practice, turn into the speed minimum.

Fill up when you can, especially when headed to rural areas.

Texas isn’t exactly Australian-Outback-levels of deprived of gas stations, but especially if you’re driving through very rural areas and/or on back roads, you won’t want to stress over your gas tank getting too low.

2 vintage red gas pumps in round rock texas

If you’re not in a hurry, opt for the back roads once in a while.

From beautiful farms to surprising small towns, there’s a lot of beauty lurking on Texas’ smaller roads.

Don’t plan a Texas road trip entirely around the big cities.

Texas’ cities are incredible, but many of the charms of road trips in Texas lie far away from their skyscrapers and (notorious) traffic.

Small towns, state parks, and wide-open spaces are some of the best things you can see in the Lone Star State, so be sure to mix them into your Texas road trip itinerary!

WOW! I lived the first 40 years of my life and now realize I only experienced a tiny bit of the wonders! After reading your articles (and seeing the pictures!) I can’t wait to go back and experience all of it!

Thank you so much, Diane! There is truly an overwhelming amount of things to see in Texas, we may never be done exploring it all!

Excellent presentation, but you should mention the twisted sisters, after TXDOT completes the bridge rework over Mill Creek.

I live in Virginia and I visit Texas every year and I have never before had a plan as well out as these seven trips. Thanks.

Glad to hear it, Fred! Enjoy Texas 🙂

The essential guide to visiting Texas

Here’s everything you need to know about exploring the Lone Star State—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

A river snakes through Boquillas Canyon

Why you should visit Texas

Big skies and bigger parks. Barbecue and Tex-Mex food (don’t miss the breakfast tacos). A vibrant live music scene in   Austin and world-class birding in South Texas. Plus, cowboys .

Best time to visit Texas

Spring:   March and April bring colorful wildflowers (indigo-hued bluebonnets , red-and-yellow Indian blankets) to the highways and backroads in Central Texas. In Austin,   the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has 284 acres of native plants inspired by the   Texas-born first lady . Outdoor festivals crowd the calendar. Austin’s South by Southwest Festival offers films and concerts each March; San Antonio ’s ebullient Fiesta   celebrates the city’s Hispanic heritage with parades, a stuff-your-face food festival , and concerts in April. And midway between Austin and Houston , the March Round Top Antiques Fair fills tents, barns, and hayfields with French furniture, vintage cowboy boots, and more.

Summer:   Y’all, it’s hot, with temperatures often soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Beat the heat at one of the state’s Gulf of Mexico beaches , including South Padre Island , where you can watch hatchling releases of baby Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles . Or do as the locals do and go tubing in the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels or in the Frio River in Garner State Park .

Autumn:   Cooler temps lure Texans outdoors to events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival , with bands in Zilker Park,   or the State Fair of Texas   in Dallas where you can eat a corn dog and wave to Big Tex ,   the 55-foot-tall animatronic greeter.   Lost Maples State Natural Area ,   northwest of San Antonio, has the state’s best fall colors. Celebrate New Braunfels ’ German heritage at Wurstfest .

Winter:   Mild weather makes outdoor activities pleasant around the holidays. In San Antonio, stroll the Riverwalk, where the bald cypress trees are draped with twinkling lights. Amid the Victorian downtown of Galveston , Dickens on the Strand brings costumed revelers and roving musicians.

The rising church at Mission San Juan in San Antonio is seen through the window of one of the crumbling ruins across its wide plaza.

Four of America’s largest cities are in Texas.

In the south, San Antonio was once a part of Spain and later Mexico, a history that shows up at the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions . Houston has high culture (art museums, the acclaimed Alley Theatre ) and the NASA Johnson Space Center , where tram tours take in Mission Control and other sites.

Sister cities Dallas and Fort Worth are just 30 miles apart in North Texas. In “Big D,” catch home games from the Dallas Cowboys football team or hear live music in funky Deep Ellum . A good art museum scene and cowboy culture rule in neighboring Fort Worth, where hatted herders lead longhorn cattle through the Stockyards District every day.

The capital city of Austin is known for live music, barbecue, and Barton Springs Pool , a natural, spring-fed watering hole and the soul of the city.

In the Rio Grande Valley,   an agricultural region bordering Mexico, there are cities such as McAllen and Brownsville plus the varied wildlife habitats (wetlands, thorn forests) of the World Birding Center .

In West Texas, El Paso   offers Tex-Mex bordertown culture amid the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert and the foothills of the Franklin Mountains , best explored via mountain bike or hiking trails.

Parks and smaller cities

The Hill Country

The rolling terrain of the Hill Country in Central Texas is home to Fredericksburg , with its throwback main street full of indie boutiques and German restaurants plus 60-plus wineries in and around town. You’ll also find cowboy culture in Bandera and the beer-drinking enclave made famous in Waylon Jennings’   song “ Luckenbach , Texas .”

The Big Bend

Two of the state’s largest parks— Big Bend National Park and the adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park —lure hikers, bikers, and campers to the desert and mountain landscapes of West Texas. Stargaze at the University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, or check out the Donald Judd art installations in funky Marfa .

Texas Coast

The longest barrier island in the world, Padre Island stretches for 113 miles from the tip of South Texas to Corpus Christi .   Farther north, Galveston Island is the birthplace of Juneteenth and home to Victorian mansions.

Panhandle

Palo Duro Canyon , the second largest canyon in the U.S. and a state park, carves through the Panhandle for 120 miles.

A group of cattle with ear tags walking through a section of golden grass.

Getting in and around Texas

By plane: Dallas-Fort Worth International, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, and Austin-Bergstrom International offer domestic and international service; San Antonio International serves Mexico and other cities in the U.S.

By bus: Vonlane   and RedCoach   have luxury bus service between Austin, Dallas/Forth Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Valley Metro serves the Rio Grande Valley.

By train: Amtrak operates two train routes through Texas—the Texas Eagle   and Sunset Limited .

By car: Texas is easily accessible via major interstates including I-10, I-20, I-35, I-45, and I-37. One of the most scenic drives is FM 170, or the River Road, which hugs the Rio Grande and cuts through Big Bend Ranch State Park between Presidio and Lajitas.

In town: Major cities including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso have bus service and bike share systems. DART rail in Dallas serves 65 stations. Austin’s CapMetro rail operates a single line from downtown to the northern suburbs. Houston’s three METRORail   lines connect tourist destinations. The Streetcar in El Paso loops through uptown and downtown.

Fishermen standing waist deep in water, seen in silhouette, with a larger shipping tanker in the distance.

Know before you go

Cultural history: Native Americans have occupied Texas for more than 14,000 years. Coastal tribes like the Karankawa were semi-nomadic, the Caddos in East Texas and Jumanos in the West farmed and traded. Comanches and Apaches hunted bison and raided villages in the north and west. Enslaved Africans helped the Spanish settle parts of Texas in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The flags of France, Spain, and Mexico once flew over the state, which declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and joined the U.S in 1846. Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. The end of enslavement was announced in Galveston at the end of the Civil War, leading to the Juneteenth holiday .   Immigrants from around the world, including Germany and Czechia,   arrived during the 18th   and 19th centuries, making their marks on places such as New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville .

LGBTQ+ : Texas ranked 27th in a 2020 24/7 Wall St. report of the most LGBTQ+-friendly states in the U.S. Despite Texas’ conservative politics, cities such as Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio get high marks on the Human Rights Campaign 2022 Municipal Equality Index scorecard.

A bright moon shines above a tent and canoes camped along the river's edge of the Rio Grande.

How to visit Texas sustainably

Help preserve habitat by sticking to designated trails and roads. Support businesses that promote dark night skies. It’s legal to drive on public beaches, but watch for wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen. The Love Fredericksburg and Port A Way stewardship   campaigns encourage visitors to keep an eye out for wildlife and pick up litter. Look for LEED-certified hotels and restaurants committed to selling locally grown food.

What to read

Empire of the Summer Moon , by S.C. Gwynne. This sweeping historic account follows four decades of fighting with the Comanches, Spanish colonialism, the decimation of the American bison and the arrival of railroads.

Forget the Alamo ,   by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford. The myths surrounding the Texas “cradle of liberty” get debunked and explored in this fascinating look at the evolution of the Lone Star State, its legends, and its prejudices. Valley of Shadows ,   by Rudy Ruiz. In this novel set in 19th-century West Texas, tensions along the Mexican border bubble up in dramatic, dark style—with a dash of magical realism.

Wines, bites & brews in southeast texas, fantastic pools and where to find them, more about texas.

Texas is located within the south-central region of the United States and is the second-largest state in the country by both area and population. Although it is commonly associated with southwestern deserts, Texas offers a wide array of diverse landscapes. With much of the land made up of forests, grasslands, prairies, and the coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, it may be surprising to learn that only a small percentage of Texas’s land is in fact desert.

When it comes to music, it is the birthplace of numerous musicians, and host to a lively country music culture, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only genre you’ll hear – styles range from rock ‘n roll to blues, and beyond. Texas is also home to world-famous festivals, as well as some lesser-known gems that make a trip to Texas well-worth planning.

Historically speaking, it marks the place of the arrival of the first Spanish conquistadors in the region of North America. Which makes it rich with history and heritage and helps explain how Tex-Mex cuisine was born. Tex-Mex is an American cuisine derived from the culinary arts of the Tejano people of Texas, and incorporates ingredients commonly used in Mexican cuisine with some that are not often used.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

7 Best Vacations in Texas on a Budget

See recent posts by Cynthia J. Drake

As the second largest state in the U.S., both by population and land area, Texas has plenty of terrain for you to explore on your next family vacation on a budget.

One of the best parts of the Lone Star State is the diversity of terrain and budget-friendly options. Families on a budget can experience everything from the deserts of El Paso to the expansive landscape of Palo Duro Canyon, the mountains of Big Bend, rich forests of east Texas’s Piney Woods, or the lush Hill Country trails that blossom with paintbrush-worthy wildflowers every spring. Texas isn’t just for cowboys! Families will find a little bit of everything on a Texas vacation on a budget.

Whether your family loves food, outdoor activities, historical attractions, small-town or big city thrills (or a combination of the above), here are several vacation ideas that keep costs low while maximizing your Texas fun.

Corpus Christi; Courtesy of Travel Texas

1. Corpus Christi

Texas families love to vacation in Corpus Christi for its mix of beautiful beaches and big-city amenities, from museums to South Texas cuisine, all at an affordable price.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: The Texas Surf Museum is a small free museum with exhibits on Texas surfing through the years. Head to Mustang Island State Park ($5 entry fee) to enjoy the beautiful shoreline. Nearby Port Aransas , a small fishing beach town, is a quaint place to watch the fishing boats, walk the beach (or drive or camp on the beach!) and enjoy small-town life.

Worth the Splurge: The Texas State Aquarium ($35.95 for adults; $25.95 for children 3 to 12) is the largest in Texas, and features an outdoor splash playground, plus petting tanks, opportunities to watch shark feedings and dolphin interactions. Nearby, the USS Lexington ($16.95 for adults; $11.95 for children) allows you and your family to climb aboard and explore a World War II aircraft carrier.

Dining Notes: Since you’re in the land of fresh seafood, you might as well sample your way through a few oysters and shrimp. Water Street and Harrison’s are great choices in Corpus. Have drinks at The BUS, formerly a Greyhound bus station where you usually have your choice of food trucks. In Port Aransas, try Moby Dick’s, a kid-friendly seafood restaurant. And if you want to partake in a local tradition, get to The Gaff, where if you’re lucky, you might catch belt sander races or chicken [poop] bingo.

Where to Stay: The Omni Corpus Christi (starting at $95 per night) feels like a luxury property, with super comfortable beds, an indoor/outdoor pool area and an onsite restaurant, with great prices, particularly in the off-season.

Fort Worth stockyards; Courtesy of Travel Texas

2. Fort Worth

Fort Worth capitalizes on its “Cowboys & Culture” brand with a twice-daily cattle drive in the Stockyards District, which is a fun place to roam and shop in its own right. Also, you’ll find plenty of interesting museums on this family vacation in Texas on a budget, including the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame & Museum and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Get your camera ready and take in one of the daily cattle drives, at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day. Explore Sundance Square and downtown on Molly the Trolley, a free vintage-style trolley that young children will love. For active families, the Trinity Trail system provides 40 miles of hike and bike trails to explore the city.

Worth the Splurge:  Fort Worth Zoo ($16 for adults; $12 for ages 3 to 12) is expansive, with animal exhibits as well as an Old West-styled Texas Town. It can easily take a full day.

Dining Notes: The seafood restaurant Flying Fish has an impressive array of singing bass on the wall and a laid-back atmosphere, while Joe. T. Garcia’s is legendary for its spacious patio—ideal environs for gobbling up Tex-Mex. We love sampling the beer at Martin House Brewing Co. while our kids play on the large lawn. For dessert, treat yourself to an unusual ice cream flavor at Melt.

Where to Stay: The Sinclair ($180 and up), a newly opened hotel in downtown Fort Worth, puts you right near Sundance Square, a vibrant shopping and entertainment district. Have your kids send a postcard down the old-fashioned mail slot of this historic (yet futuristic) Art Deco building.

Klyde Warren Park; Courtesy of Travel Texas

Explore the 20-block Downtown Arts District, George W. Bush’s Presidential Library, and the tragic and interesting history of John F. Kennedy’s final day, all in Dallas , which offers plenty of free and budget-friendly activities for families vacationing in Texas.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Dallas offers a wealth of spacious public parks. Pay a visit to Klyde Warren Park, five acres of green space situated over a major freeway, where kids can play at Children’s Park and Imagination Playground. Pay a visit to Thanks-Giving Square, where you can find the spiral-shaped Chapel of Thanksgiving. And ride the free McKinney Avenue M-Line trolley, transporting you to the Uptown and Downtown Arts districts. The Dallas Museum of Art also offers free admission.

Worth the Splurge: The Perot Museum of Nature and Science ($20 for adults; $13 for ages 2 to 17) is chock-full of curiosity-inspiring exhibits, covering everything from dinosaurs to sports and engineering.

Dining Notes: Your family can spread out and enjoy some fried chicken at Chicken Scratch. There are plentiful restaurants with kids’ play areas, including The Lot, a farm-to-table eatery, and Hat Creek, a Texas burger chain. Unleavened Fresh Kitchen (three locations) offers a kids eat free deal every day after 4 p.m.

Where to Stay: Hyatt Regency Dallas (starting at $129 per night) boasts the cool factor of being located near the base of Reunion Tower, an icon of the Dallas Skyline, which offers a deck that can give you views from nearly 500 feet up (you’ll get a discount on your ticket as a hotel guest). The hotel features two onsite restaurants—choose from wood-fired pizza at Parrino’s or Texas cuisine at Centennial.

4. DFW Suburbs

The rate at which Texas is growing is abundantly clear in the growth of the suburbs that surround the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolis: Frisco , Grapevine , Irving and Plano. Each is becoming a destination in its own right, but still maintains a small-town charm with budget-friendly options for families.

If your kids are into video games or sports, Frisco is a must-do destination. If you’d like to visit an eye-popping resort (the Gaylord Texan ) or celebrate Christmas in a town that has staked its brand on celebrating the season, check out Grapevine. Irving is a great space for live music at Toyota Music Factory and taking a gondola ride through man-made canals.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Check the calendars of these cities’ convention and visitors bureaus for upcoming events going on in the plentiful public spaces—on weekends throughout the year, you’re likely to find parades, music and community fun.

Worth the Splurge: The newly opened Kidzania in Frisco ($39.95 for children 6 to 14 years old; $14.95 for 4 and 5 year olds; and $14.95 for adults and children 15 and up) is a fast-paced attraction for school-aged kids where they learn the ins and outs of various occupations by doing them, and earning play money along the way.

Dining Notes: Order up burgers, a Frito pie and a handmade shake at Big State Soda Fountain Grill in Irving; or play video games (on your choice of gaming console while you level up your meal at @nerdvana in Frisco.

Where to Stay: The Texican Court in Irving ($99 and up) is a new and elegant, yet budget-friendly take on the mid-century motor court. Here you’ll find cute retro-styled rooms with full-sized Smeg refrigerators ; a spacious pool for the kids (with sunken lounge chairs in the pool for you to keep an eye on them); outdoor fire pits for roasting S’mores in the evening; and an onsite restaurant, Two Mules Cantina, which makes a cochinita pibil.

San Antonio Alamo; Courtesy of Visit San Antonio

5. San Antonio

San Antonio feels like a world apart from the rest of Texas. The River Walk, famous historic structures like the Alamo and the rest of the missions, plus La Villita and El Mercado, combined with amazing food and art make it feel like a truly special Texas destination where families can vacation on a budget.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Walking the River Walk is a time-honored tradition—getting lost down the canals and side streets is a worthy pursuit any time of year. Go both during the day and at night! Be sure to visit El Mercado for some elote (street corn) and a concha (Mexican pastry). Visiting the Alamo and all of the rest of the missions  are free. If your family is active, you can rent a public bicycle inexpensively and bike the 15-mile trip to all of the missions.

Worth the Splurge: Pay a visit to The Witte Museum (adults are $14; children 4 to 10 are $10), for an interactive experience with Texas history that’s interesting even if you’re not from Texas; a new dinosaur gallery is sure to capture the imagination. San Antonio is also a trove of amusement parks: SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas are both here. But one of our favorites is Morgan’s Wonderland—a nonprofit amusement park and water park geared toward welcoming kids of all abilities, including kids with special needs (anyone with special needs is admitted free; otherwise, adults are $17; children 3 to 17 are $11).

Dining Notes: Your kids will probably love the festive atmosphere that looks like it’s always Christmas at Mi Tierra Cafe and Panaderia; for a lovely weekend brunch, take them to the Pearl District—Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery offers a variety of Southern comfort food and seafood, and kids can shape their own pretzels with dough that gets baked whenever they’re finished playing with their food. Outside on the lawn at Pearl is a great place to let them blow off steam. If you want to grab a beer while your kids play, check out Burleson Yard Beer Garden.

Where to Stay: The dark wood beams, bright red carpeting and incense-filled air, plus lush tropical foliage outside the Hotel Havana ($111 and up) are some of your clues that this Cuban-themed retreat is an unexpected journey in itself. There’s a well-stocked (and reasonably priced) full-sized refrigerator in the guestrooms, balconies for relaxing, an onsite restaurant and rental bikes to use on your day trips.

6. Galveston Island

Galveston Island is Texas’s tropical island in the Gulf of Mexico, which feels like a quintessential vacation getaway, while also being inexpensive and a short one-hour drive from Houston.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Take a walk along the waterfront and enjoy some time on the beach. You can watch shrimpers coming and going at Pier 21 with laden nets filled with crustaceans. Stop into the Pier 21 Theater to watch a film about The Great Storm—a 1900 hurricane that was the deadliest in U.S. history ($6 for adults; $5 for kids 6 to 18). This storm is also the reason the island is rumored to be haunted—something you might wish to explore further with your kids (depending on their tolerance for spookiness). A ride on the Galveston Trolley is just $1 for adults and free for kids.

Worth the Splurge: Visit Moody Gardens ($65 for adults; $55 for kids 4 to 12 for a combo pass), a trio of pyramids that house a rainforest, an aquarium and a Discovery Museum — plus outdoor attractions like a zipline and a paddlewheel boat. You could spend an entire weekend just exploring this nonprofit attraction.

Dining Notes: The bright, cheerful Sunflower Bakery & Cafe is a great casual choice for breakfast or lunch with your family; Old Moon Deli & Pie has a selection of daily baked pies as well as sandwiches and salads.

Where to Stay: The Hotel Galvez & Spa (from $112 per night) is a beautiful, historic property dating back to 1911. There’s an outdoor heated pool with swim-up bar, an onsite spa, and a restaurant. It’s also rumored to be haunted—you can rent an EMF “ghost detector” for free upon request, and there are guided ghost tours offered regularly.

7. The Woodlands

Located 30 minutes north of Houston , The Woodlands is a master-planned community that offers some interesting options for a family getaway.

Best Free (or Low Cost) Activities: Explore Town Green Park, which includes life-sized characters from Aesop’s Fables situated around a children’s literary labyrinth. Cool off in the splash pad at Waterway Square, and go for a hike in George Mitchell Nature Preserve, a 1,200-acre natural space. Little ones will love exploring the Woodlands Children’s Museum for a $7 ticket.

Worth the Splurge:  Challenge your family to a treetop adventure at the new Texas TreeVentures, an aerial course that gets you up close and personal with the trees, by climbing on and through ropes, tires, planks and more. It takes three hours to complete and costs $40 for people 13 and up; $35 for kids ages 6 to 12 (6 years is the minimum age).

Dining Notes: Let your kids play on the Creekside Village Green while you enjoy a meal at Fielding’s Local Kitchen + Bar. At Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, kids can play with pizza dough while they wait for their pies to bake.

Where to Stay:  Starting at $150 a night, the Woodlands Resort offers several family activities onsite, from a water park with a 1,005-foot lazy river and two-story double water slides, kayaking, biking and a fire pit for S’mores. A monthly activity guide features daily activities like movies, Bingo and crafts.

Why Your Next Beach Break Should be in Texas

Travel to the lone star state for an underrated coastal getaway..

  • Copy Link copied

Texas’s Gulf Coast has beaches for everyone, from bird-watchers to kayakers.

Texas boasts 367 miles of coastline spread along the Gulf of Mexico and its barrier islands. To enjoy the beaches here, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is almost as important as sunscreen; you’ll find uncrowded areas perfect for relaxing and exploring on some of the state’s remote shorelines.

While Texas’s sands are enticing, wildlife is another draw. Avian enthusiasts flock to the coastal region for unparalleled birding thanks to its location on fall and spring migratory routes. The Lone Star State’s beaches are also an important nesting site for endangered sea turtles, providing a special opportunity to attend a hatchling release.

From uninhabited wind-swept islands to adventure playgrounds, here are the six best beaches to visit in Texas.

South Padre Island

  • Location: South Padre Island
  • Come for: an adventure-packed getaway on the far edge of Texas

With 34 miles of soft white sands and turquoise water, South Padre Island is connected to the mainland by a single causeway and is less than 30 miles from the border town of Brownsville. The area attracts crowds, including families and college students, with opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, dolphin watching, horseback riding, and snorkeling.

Those seeking solitude from the commercial buzz should drive about 1.5 miles north of the city hall to Andy Bowie County Park , where beach driving is allowed. Don’t have a four-wheel-drive vehicle? Drive north until the lone road ends, park on the side of the road, and explore the deserted stretch of sand on foot. Consider planning your trip around a SpaceX rocket launch: The southern tip of the island is across the bay from the launch site.

Where to stay

In a residential neighborhood half a block from the beach, the 2022-renovated South Beach Inn is a welcome place to escape the crowds in a central location with a pool.

How to get there

Avelo Airlines, American Airlines, and United service the closest airport in Brownsville, 30 minutes away. Otherwise, it’s a long drive from the major cities of Houston (5.5 hours) and San Antonio (4.5 hours).

Mustang Island State Park is nearly 4,000 acres in size.

Mustang Island State Park

  • Location: Corpus Christi
  • Come for: paddling, fishing, and bird-watching on marsh and coastal habitats

This state park was named after the herds of wild horses that once roamed the 18-mile island for centuries. Now, the undeveloped island is a haven for paddlers with a 20-mile trail along the western shoreline and a prime shallow-water fishing area that meanders through marshes and past spoil islands (which are artificial islands often created from dredging). The sun can get intense here, so lather on the sunscreen before swimming, surfing, kayaking, or building sandcastles along the five miles of coastline. Like much of coastal Texas, it’s a superb area for bird-watching during the fall and spring migration periods, when birds like the ruddy duck and American white pelican fly through.

Choose between the park’s 50 primitive beach drive-up campsites or one of the 48 with electricity and a shade shelter.

From Corpus Christi, it’s a 27-mile journey. Take TX-358 East to TX-361 North. From Port Aransas, drive south for 13 miles on TX-361.

Galveston Island

  • Location: Galveston
  • Come for: a beach town with art, culture, and history

Located about 50 miles from Houston, this Gulf Coast barrier island is a port town with a rich art scene (which includes the Galveston Art Center ), historic mansions , and 32 miles of beaches. The family-friendly Steward Beach is staffed by lifeguards and features such activities as volleyball, cornhole, and giant Jenga. East Beach, on the northernmost tip of the island, is excellent for horseback rides and flying kites, while kayakers can enjoy the paddling trails at Galveston Island State Park . Don’t miss the AIA Sandcastle Competition , where more than 60 teams compete for the Golden Bucket award.

One of the newest additions to the boutique hotel scene is the 2023-opened Hotel Lucine , a renovated 1960s motor court inn (the longest-standing in town) with Galveston’s largest beachfront rooftop bar.

From downtown Houston, follow I-45 South for 50 miles until it dead-ends on the island.

Padre Island National Seashore is one of the best beach camping spots in the USA.

Padre Island National Seashore

  • Location: Padre Island
  • Come for: beach days centered around shelling and sea turtles

Padre Island National Seashore has several claims to fame: It’s the world’s longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island, and more Kemp’s ridley sea turtles nest here than any other place in the country. Between mid-June and August, the public can attend sea turtle hatchling releases at Malaquite Beach by the park visitor center.

The seashore’s 70 miles of protected coastline are ideal for exploring, camping, and shelling. (A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is a must!) Bird Island Basin, a day-use area located on a hyper-saline lagoon on the island’s west coast, has superb windsurfing conditions for thrill seekers.

Snag a tent or RV site at one of the two park campgrounds or opt for primitive beach camping.

Despite the name similarities, Padre Island National Seashore is not connected to South Padre Island, which is a 3.5-hour drive away. The national seashore is 36 miles east of Corpus Christi on TX-358 East, which turns into Park Road 22. The pavement ends just shy of the visitor center.

Bolivar Peninsula is located in Texas’s Galveston County.

Bolivar Beach

  • Location: Crystal Beach
  • Come for: a scenic ferry ride to a wide-open beach for driving

The entire 27 miles of beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, which is about a 1.5-hour drive east of Houston, is open for driving with an annual permit available at local businesses. (Golf carts are also allowed.) This wide blanket of sand becomes a viewing platform come New Year’s Eve and July Fourth, when the town puts on massive fireworks displays. Visit on Mother’s Day weekend for the Texas Crab Festival —an annual tradition since 1986—which serves up seafood dishes ranging from boiled crab to crawfish étouffée.

The free, 24-hour Galveston–Bolivar Ferry itself is worth a trip to the peninsula. The one-way, 18-minute journey across the Houston Shipping Channel doubles as a free dolphin-watching trip and provides a close look at shrimping boats in action.

For those who want to wake up to the sound of waves, beach camping on the peninsula is allowed and free. All vehicles parked on the beach need a parking ticket, available for $10 at local convenience stores.

From the mainland, it’s a two-hour trek by car from Houston. Travelers can also walk or drive onto the free public ferry from Galveston.

Take in a beautiful and quiet moment at Rockport Beach.

Rockport Beach

  • Location: Rockport
  • Come for: a relaxing escape in a fishing village with a pristine beach

In 2017 , this Port Aransas area beach became the state’s first Blue Wave Beach, a certification given by the Clean Beaches Coalition to responsibly managed beaches focused on protecting the environment. Its cleanliness makes it an obvious choice for taking a dip, but it’s also a great place for a picnic, offering 65 sites with covered tables and grills. Visit the bird sanctuary on the beach’s west side to spot egrets, roseate spoonbills, and blue herons. Or head to the 800-foot pier for a prime fishing spot.

Reel ‘Em Inn , which opened in 2023, is a renovated 1950s motor court inn with nine rooms, a private pier, and modern amenities like mobile check-in and digital room keys.

Rockport is an easy 30-mile drive from Corpus Christi and 18 miles from Port Aransas.

Get a Taste of Texas Culture in San Antonio

Head to the heart of South Texas to immerse yourself in the food, history, and culture of the Lone Star State

San Antonio, Texas

Some of the best travel experiences revolve around culture—tasting it, hearing it, seeing it, immersing yourself in it. That’s certainly true in Texas, and in particular San Antonio, where you’ll discover a tapestry of history, local foods, art, nightlife, and more. Outside sent travel couple Mike and Anne Howard of HoneyTrek to explore San Antonio and immerse themselves in Texas culture. The Howards have been traveling as digital nomads since 2012 and have explored cultures around the world, which makes them the perfect travelers for a deep dive in the heart of Texas. Here’s what they discovered.

Get a History Lesson

Start your trip by getting a lay of the land on a guided history tour through the city. Whether you explore on foot , by bike , or by boat , a local guide will bring the city to life with the stories and history that developed the South Texas culture you see today. Going for a DIY approach? Hop on an electric BCycle bike to explore at your own pace. Ride along 16 miles of trails that connect the San Antonio Missions—the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. Constructed in the early 1700s, the missions played an integral part in combining Indigenous and Spanish influences into a novel South Texas culture. “Strolling under the live oaks at the missions while taking in the history is a really special experience,” says Anne. The trails are as much an experience as the missions themselves. Along the way, you’ll pass local art installations and pedal through lush greenspaces where local plants thrive.

Find Your Texas State of Mind

If natural history is more your thing, explore the Natural Bridge Caverns just outside of the city. Guided tours of the caverns range from walking tours by lantern to more active spelunking experiences.

Explore Local Art

From colorful murals that exude a vibe unique to San Antonio to museums and galleries that display works by local and international artists, San Antonio is filled with creative expression. One of the most innovative: Hopscotch , an immersive art experience where visitors wander through 20,000 square feet of larger-than-life installations filled with mesmerizing, interactive elements that engage all five senses. Explore hidden pockets of color in the rainbow cave. Or let your inner child loose in the LED ball pit. Because new artists are constantly invited to exhibit their work, no two visits to Hopscotch are the same. “The art installations change frequently with pieces from local artists, so there is always a new reason to come back,” says Anne.

Taste the Flavors of Texas

Texas locals take their food seriously, with Texas-style dishes and flavors you won’t find anywhere else . Book a spot on a San Antonio River Walk food tour to sample South Texas cuisine at its finest. As a major part of the ranching industry—more than 13 percent of the country’s cattle are raised in the state—much of Texas cuisine is beef-forward. In Texas, barbecue means beef brisket smoked to perfection and served without sauce, because, as Texans say, the meat is Texas barbecue. Chili, another widely contested dish, takes on a distinct flavor in Texas. Made with roast instead of ground beef, and never with beans, Texas chili is a point of pride among locals. Of course, it wouldn’t be a San Antonio food tour without Tex-Mex and tacos—both important parts of Texas cuisine. And don’t sleep past the breakfast taco, a staple of San Antonio’s brunch scene. Eddie’s Taco House serves up a variety of egg-based taco creations to start your day.

San Antonio, Texas

Vegetarian or vegan? Don’t worry! Many restaurants have adapted famous Texas dishes to offer plant-based options. “From the bars to the little coffee shops, the vegan food options are fantastic, and there are constantly new restaurants popping up,” says Mike.

Go Out on the Town

Sometimes the best way to get a feel for a city is to soak up the atmosphere at a local watering hole. During the day, head to the Pearl. This live-work-play community is a hub for creative cuisine, art, music, and shopping. Browse shops filled with goods from local artisans . Catch live music at the Stable Hall . Or simply relax and take it all in with an afternoon drink at Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery . “San Antonio’s nightlife exhibits a beautiful combination of living history, creativity, and modern charm that’s great to experience and be a part of,” says Mike.

San Antonio, Texas

In the evening, check out the downtown scene. Filled with restaurants, theaters, public art, and nightlife, this neighborhood shows off San Antonio culture like no other. Grab dinner close to the action at the Iron Cactus . The patio seating right on the river is ideal for sipping margs and feasting on the restaurant’s famous brisket enchiladas. After dinner, wander the River Walk and pop into any of the neighborhood’s many cocktail bars or live music venues that strike your fancy.

See inside the first ultra-accessible theme park 'for everybody': Morgan’s Wonderland

vacation trip in texas

“Accessible Travel” is a six-part series focusing on the travel industry’s preparedness to welcome travelers with disabilities. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

It takes more than guts to ride a zip line.

It also takes things many people take for granted, like bodily control and the ability to breathe independently.

But not at Morgan’s Wonderland , the world’s first “ultra-accessible, fully inclusive” theme park, in San Antonio, Texas.

Its new Rocket’s Sky Flight Adventure features a semi-private loading area for guests who need to transfer out of wheelchairs, specially designed seats and harnesses that can support guests lacking upper body control, a place to hang oxygen tanks right on the ride vehicle, and two operating speeds with extra smooth braking available for guests who may be more fragile.

“We made sure that (the park) was built for everyone, but with a thought process to ensure that they could enjoy it just like anybody else. That's the key," Morgan’s Wonderland founder Gordon Hartman told USA TODAY.

More than one in four U.S. adults have some disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Morgan’s Wonderland is setting the bar for the entire attractions industry on inclusion and accessibility.

What is the story behind Morgan's Wonderland?

Morgan’s Wonderland was inspired by an experience its founder witnessed on a family vacation in 2006.

Hartman's daughter Morgan has a rare condition called Tatton-Brown-Rahman syndrome , which the National Institutes of Health describes as an overgrowth and intellectual disability syndrome. “ One of the effects of it in her particular case is her cognitive level is that of about a 4- or 5-year-old,” Hartman explained.

They were hanging out by a pool when Morgan, then 12, noticed some kids playing with a ball nearby.

“After kind of looking at it for a while, she hit the ball. And when she hit the ball, those children – very nice children – grabbed their ball and got out of the pool real quick,” Hartman recalled. “They were scared. The reason I’m going to use the word scared is because they didn't know why Morgan was reacting or came to them the way she did versus saying, ‘Hey, guys, I just want to play.’ She couldn't verbalize that … That was her way to say, ‘Can I be included?’ “

The interaction stuck with Hartman, who a year earlier had sold his successful real estate empire and decided to spend the second part of his career serving people with disabilities.

“I started thinking, ‘Well why couldn't we develop a place where those with and without special needs could come together and play in an atmosphere that everybody feels comfortable?’ ” Hartman said.

Morgan’s Wonderland was created to be that place.

The newer, the better: How wheelchair users can travel smoothly

Is Morgan's Wonderland only for people with disabilities?

No. Only about 20% of guests have disabilities, like Emma Rodriguez’s daughter Melanie.

“Our 6-year-old has a lot of sensory issues because of her autism, and she's scared of a lot of things, and they pretty much customize this place to fit the entire family.” Rodriguez said on a field trip with her 4-year-old, while Melanie was in school. “The littlest things were so well thought out that it fits everybody.”

Everyone has the same access, but there is one added benefit for guests who aren’t disabled. “It’s a learning opportunity,” Hartman said.

“I think that's amazing because people usually don't understand , especially with autism, you know the meltdowns,” Rodriguez said. “They'll take it as the kid is being bratty, the kid is just not being parented correctly, the kid just needs to get over it. But here, you’re able to see from Down syndrome to physical disabilities to all kinds of disabilities, and you're able to see how well each kid does in every single ride because there's something for everybody.”

Selya Santillan-Masse brought her 2-year-old, Petra, to Morgan’s Wonderland partly for that very reason. “For her to get that experience with other people with special needs and getting her to ask questions respectfully and to not ignore or to point and think like, ‘They're different. That's bad. That's weird.’ but ‘They're different, and I'm different, and here we are having fun.’ ”

“I actually used to be an assistant teacher in a special needs high school classroom, and this is just groundbreaking,” she added. “It's so needed.”

Don't stare: What people with disabilities and their families want fellow travelers to know

How much does it cost to get into Morgan's Wonderland?

Single-day admission to Morgan’s Wonderland costs $24 for most guests ages 14 to 61. It’s $16 for kids ages 3 to 13 and adults over age 61.

There’s also a bundled rate available for access to both Morgan’s Wonderland and its equally accessible neighboring water park, Morgan’s Inspiration Island , which opens for the season on Friday.

Admission to both is free for guests with disabilities.

“It's been our policy from the beginning, and part of the reason for that is because we don't want that to be an economic barrier,” Hartman said, aware of all the expenses that come along with medical complexities.

“Morgan is one of the lucky ones because she has the doctors. She has a therapist. She has an incredible caregiver. She has a home that she can live in. She has two loving parents. She has all those different things. That's really truly more of an exception than the rule when it comes to individuals with special needs,” he said. “Morgan shouldn't have those things just because we have means and we have access. Everybody ought to have that.”

How many rides are at Morgan's Wonderland?

Morgan’s Wonderland spans 25 acres of San Antonio and features “more than 25 ultra-accessible accessible rides, playscapes, and interactive elements,” according to the park. Only a portion of those are rides, four of which are new this year.

The zip line is the only ride that requires guests to transfer from wheelchairs. Guests can roll right onto other rides like the ferris wheel, train and new 4-D theater. Hartman noted the company that made the 4-D theater had never been asked to make wheelchair accessible motion-simulated platforms before.

“Before, when someone was in a wheelchair, they just sat and watched,” he said. “We asked them to actually work with us to where we could put a wheelchair on a platform to where those people would have the same feeling. They had been around 30 years and no one had ever asked them to do it. Now they're doing it, they're saying, ‘Hey, we want to do this in other places now.’ That's how it will start to really move forward.”

What’s next for Morgan’s?

Many other ride manufacturers, theme parks and others have turned to Morgan’s Wonderland for guidance on accessibility and inclusion since the park’s opening in 2010. Just this year Hartman, his wife Maggie, and daughter Morgan were inducted into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame.

But Morgan’s, the nonprofit organization behind the Morgan’s Wonderland, is looking at an even bigger picture. In addition to the park and water park, it’s started a camp , sports complex , and Multi-Assistance Center , which helps people with disabilities with a variety of needs. It’s working on opening an ambulatory surgical center, a care facility for kids with acute needs, a fitness center, and an institute to teach outside groups how to become more accessible.

In years to come, it’s planning to open the first of what it hopes will be a series of fully “accessorized” hotels that are open to all but specifically designed to accommodate access needs in every room. It’s also in talks to open a second Morgan’s Wonderland, which would be built by Morgan’s but operated by another company.

“We don't think of this only as a moment,” Hartman said. “We think of this almost as a movement now.”

The reporter on this story received access to the park from Morgan's and Visit San Antonio. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of reviews.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas now knows which SEC teams they will host for the 2024-25 season after the league released the Razorbacks' conference opponents Monday.

Coach John Calipari will return to Rupp Arena in Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats for the first time since Dec, 4, 1991 when he was in his fourth season coaching the UMass Minutemen. It will also be the first time Calipari has faced the Wildcats since the 2006 Maui Invitational when he was the coach of the Memphis Tigers.

Other schedule highlights include hosting both new members of the SEC. Oklahoma and Texas will come to Bud Walton Arena in their first year in the conference after joining from the Big 12. Arkansas will also pay a visit to Austin to take on the Longhorns. It will be the first time since 2011 that Arkansas plays host to Texas.

Final Four participant Alabama will only play Arkansas once, with the only match-up scheduled in Fayetteville. It will be the first time since the 2018-19 season the Hogs do not travel to Tuscaloosa. Arkansas will also travel to Knoxville to for its only match-up against Tennessee, a team that made the Elite Eight last year.

With the conference expanding to 16 teams, only three teams are scheduled for a traditional home-and-home series, Texas, Missouri and LSU.
