Virgin renews push to hire hundreds of new staff

Virgin announced back in November that it would begin recruiting for “hundreds of new roles” , amid welcoming an additional seven Boeing 737s to its fleet.

However, these plans were likely placed on ice in January when the airline was forced to slash flight capacity by 25 per cent due to the Omicron outbreak.

It all comes just over a year after Virgin was officially relaunched under the ownership of Bain Capital, and nearly two years after the struggling airline first entered administration.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work over the course of two years making sure we’re a different company now,” Hrdlicka told A Current Affair .

“People’s jobs are safe, we’re excited about the future and there’s nothing but optimism to look forward to,” she added.

According to Virgin, new staff can expect generous benefits, including heavily discounted airfares for themselves and their family, free travel credit up to $1,000 per year, and up to six weeks paid annual leave.

Workers will also be offered free parking at airports, an on-site physiotherapist, and the ability to earn Velocity frequent flyer points while working.

Virgin Australia’s training centre in Sydney is already bustling with new cabin crew recruits.

“This group we have today are initial cabin crew, they’re a group of 21 students. Some have returned from other airlines and from Virgin previously,” crew training instructor Matthew Nicolson said.

Nicolson is himself a returning Virgin alumnus, having been made redundant during 2020 after 10 years at the airline.

“I think not knowing when the industry would return to normal or bounce back in some capacity was the hardest,” he said.

New cabin crew are put through a six-week full-time training course before they board an aircraft, to learn the job and how to perform in emergency situations.

Cabin crew must also pass examinations on these abilities before taking their first flight.

“We have people learning different safety moves to ensure they’re well prepared when they step out on the line for the first time for this class next week,” chief people officer at Virgin, Lisa Burquest, said.

Last month, Virgin Australia said it will slash its flight capacity for January and February by 25 per cent and place its recently resumed sole international service to Fiji on hold, as it navigates the current Omicron outbreak.

According to the airline, travel demand subdued due to the new outbreak ripping across Australia, causing people to cancel their bookings last minute due to isolation rules.

Meanwhile, the industry continues to face an ongoing staff shortage, with frontline workers repeatedly sent into seven-day isolation due to being deemed close contacts of confirmed COVID cases.

As a result, Virgin has slashed capacity across its network and suspended all flights on 10 of its routes, including its one international service to Fiji – less than one month after reinstating the service for the first time since the airline entered administration in 2020.

Despite the myriad of schedule changes, Hrdlicka said the measures will not impact the business or its customers long-term.

“One thing we have learnt from the last two years is that we need to keep adapting as circumstances change. So, we will continue to do that, and have made some temporary changes to our network to manage the current environment,” Hrdlicka said.

The decent benefits are supposed to come from revenue? So VA is profitable now and able to make good care of its people?

Mario Celso N. Waga

Good day, i am Marcel Waga from the Pholippines, i just want to ask if this Hiring is open also for other nationalities and not a resident or a citizen of Australia? Because i am very much wanted to apply and if ever will i be provided a working visa? Im in Manila Philippines right now and i am an experienced Senior Cabin crew, i worked for three different airline companies here in the Philippines. Hoping for your reply and consideration. Thank you very much.

Will they re-hire those they got rid of over the past couple of years’? After all, they’ve already been job trained.

virgin australia staff travel login

Yeah, one would expect… however, the expectation of ethics in the aviation game, is very low!

After all, look at what they have done to airlines such as TigerAir and that crew…. gone and forgotten(?).

virgin australia staff travel login

All the Tiger air crew have been redeployed into Virgin Australia now

virgin australia staff travel login

Chris Smith

Note: No cabin crew member at Virgin Australia was “made” redundant. It was a voluntary redundancy process for all cabin crew, where enough exited the business to avoid compulsory redundancies.

virgin australia staff travel login

Max 8s, no thanks.

virgin australia staff travel login

Bwahahaha…. Yeah!

Should have gone Airbus.

So they need Pilots hey? Really? Where are all the poor pilots getting shafted doing dead end jobs because they were retrenched by VA? I have not heard of my pilot friends being called back into service!

I think VA have to be leaders here, and drop these useless jab-mandates and 3rd booster shots they are trying to force into pilots bodies! Where is the safety data for pilots, let alone the blind-management that have not seen the Gates memo where he states that covid natural immunity makes better T & B cells; And the fact that the injections didnt stop any infects !! lol

Why push the needle? They must have a pilot shortage for a reason, and maybe its that guys aint coming back to a career that is so full of b.s nowadays.

Virgin australia doubles down on recruitment drive.

The Australian airline is pushing ahead with a post-pandemic recruitment drive as it eyes a more prosperous 2022.

Now that the Australian borders have largely re-opened, and as the Omicron variant takes more of a backseat, Virgin Australia has re-affirmed its intention to recruit hundreds of additional staff. With new routes and additional aircraft planned for 2022, the airline is pushing to recruit new staff across a range of disciplines to join its ranks in the coming months.

A drive for new staff

In line with its announcement back in November 2021 that the airline intends to introduce another seven Boeing 737-800 s to its fleet in 2022, Virgin Australia has announced an additional push to fill hundreds of positions that will open up at the airline as these new aircraft come on stream. The roles the airline is seeking to fill include cabin crew , ground services workers, engineers, pilots, and head office staff.

The introduction of these additional aircraft will take the Virgin Australia fleet to 84 aircraft. Interestingly, this number is just one short of the total number of jets that the airline operated in April 2020, just before it entered administration upon the onset of COVID-19.

However, unlike before, the airline has now focussed its growth plans around a single aircraft type in the Boeing 737-800 . This fleet commonality is crucial in assisting the airline in keeping overall operating costs down and should help to contribute to positive results in the airline's bottom line in the future.

The new aircraft were due to start arriving at the start of this year. However, their introduction was delayed in January as the Omicron wave swept around the planet. This led the airline to cut flight capacity by 25% at the start of this year. However, the mood music emanating from Virgin Australia's Brisbane headquarters is now notably upbeat, with optimistic predictions about 2022 and beyond being made by the airline's CEO, Jane Hrdlicka, who commented about this latest recruitment drive,

"It all comes just over a year after Virgin was officially relaunched under the ownership of Bain Capital and nearly two years after the struggling airline first entered administration. We've done a lot of hard work over the course of two years, making sure we're a different company now. People's jobs are safe, we're excited about the future, and there's nothing but optimism to look forward to,"

Pushing hard to fill vacancies

Virgin Australia is pushing to fill the plethora of vacant positions across its business. With several airlines in the country looking to grow and expand operations this year, along with the commencement of services by the newly announced startup Bonza , competition for staff will be intense.

To attract new recruits, Virgin Australia is offering an attractive package of benefits to lure applicants, including generous travel benefits, six weeks annual leave, free airport parking, and notably, the ability to earn 'Velocity' frequent flyer points while working for the airline.

Cabin crew recruitment is already well underway at the Virgin Australia Cabin crew training center in Sydney. While many recruits are new to the business, the airline has also seen many former employees return to the airline, having been laid off upon the airline entering administration in 2020.

The new recruits are put through a six-week training program at the end of which they are assessed in several key areas, including safety, cabin service, and customer care. Upon completing the course, the recruits are awarded their 'wings' and are subsequently rostered onto passenger-carrying flights for the first time.

A challenging couple of years

Like so many airlines around the world, Virgin Australia has faced significant challenges over the past two years. These challenges have been compounded by the uncertainty of COVID-19, along with decisions taken by the Australian Government (along with individual states within the country) regarding the opening of its borders and the ability for people to travel freely within Australia. Consequently, this uncertainly suppressed forward bookings and caused people to cancel bookings due to self-isolating following a positive test result.

The Australian airline industry faces ongoing staff shortages, with frontline workers repeatedly sent into seven-day isolation due to being deemed close contacts of confirmed COVID cases. As a result, Virgin has recently been forced to cut capacity across its network and suspend flights on ten of its routes, including its one remaining international service to Fiji. This comes just weeks after the airline resumed flights on this route for the first time since the airline entered administration in 2020.

Notwithstanding the ongoing disruption and plethora of schedule changes, the airline's CEO remains upbeat about Virgin Australia's adaptability and its future, stating,

"One thing we have learned from the last two years is that we need to keep adapting as circumstances change. So, we will continue to do that and have made some temporary changes to our network to manage the current environment. We do know that as we make the shift to living with COVID-19, there will continue to be changes in all our lives, and we look forward to continuing to connect our guests with their families, friends, colleagues."

What are your thoughts on the future for Virgin Australia? Do you think 2022 will prove to be a successful year for the carrier as it continues to rebuild post-administration? Let us know your views in the comments.
