The hot air balloons are not all that Cappadocia has to offer, there are so many more things to do in Cappadocia .

But, they are so unique and an amazing way to see the landscape of Cappadocia and whether you go in a hot air balloon , watch them from your hotel rooftop (I recommend staying at Design Cappadocia Hotel !), or both, seeing them will definitely make your trip to Cappadocia.

The wind is what cancels the hot air balloons in Cappadocia and in the winter months they often only run for half of the days in a month, in the summer months they usually run most of the month, so keep this in mind when planning your Cappadocia trip!

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Travel Tip

Be sure to book your Hot Air Balloon ride for the very first morning you’re in Cappadocia, this way, if it gets cancelled you will have your second morning and perhaps third morning to go on it. If you book it on your last morning and it gets cancelled, you have no other mornings to go!

Cappadocia in January

January in Cappadocia is cold and it’s very likely to snow in January too.

You may have seen beautiful photos with snow on the ground and hot air balloons in the sky because the hot air balloons sometimes still run in the snow and some days in January in Cappadocia can be cold but beautifully sunny .

However, the snow does stop the hot air balloons a lot of the time in January and from a practical point of view, a lot of Cappadocia is very hilly, especially the town of Goreme and I wouldn’t like to be there when it’s icy!

For the best time to visit Cappadocia, January is not it unless you are happy with very very cold and snowy days and the possibility of the hot air balloons in Cappadocia not running.

Also, bare in mind that Cappadocia in Winter is very quiet so the town of Goreme which is the main tourist town will not be busy and buzzing in the winter months in Cappadocia.

Cappadocia Weather in January day time temperature average: 1-11 C

best time to visit Cappadocia, snow and hot air balloons

Cappadocia in February

Cappadocia weather in February is very similar to January. It is very cold with the possibility of snow and the balloons running less than half of the month.

For the best month to go to Cappadocia, February is not a month I recommend unless you are happy with cold days, cold nights, some snow and the possibility of the hot air balloons not running when you are there.

Cappadocia Weather in February day time temperature average: 7-12 C

Cappadocia in March

March in Cappadocia seems to bring more wind to the region than any other month of the year.

Some days can be cloudy , other days can be clear blue skies and the weather in Cappadocia can change dramatically in this month, so if you are looking at March as the best time to visit Cappadocia, keep that in mind.

This year my friends visited in Cappadocia in March and in the middle of March it was snowing so keep in mind March in Cappadocia can still be very cold!

Wind often cancels the hot air balloons in Cappadocia and it’s likely you will face their cancellations due to wind in March. The day time temperature picks up in March, it will still be cold in the morning and when getting up for your balloon ride.

For the Cappadocia best time to visit, March is a better month than January and February but if you want better and more enjoyable weather, wait a bit longer, or at least until the end of March.

Cappadocia Weather in March day time temperature average: 15-20 C

Cappadocia in April

I had a lot of responses from my Instagram friends for April in Cappadocia when I asked them about the best time to visit Cappadocia so it seems this is a popular month to go !

April in Cappadocia seems like it brings all weather . It offers a nice daytime temperature for looking around in the day and offers perfect hiking weather in Cappadocia because of the cooler days than the summer.

However, you may still experience some snow like the most recent Aprils did and some cloudy days.

If you are happy to experience a range of temperatures and weather types, April could be the best time to visit Cappadocia for you!

Personally, I would like to go back to Cappadocia in April as I feel like it is the best time to visit Cappadocia for cooler but enjoyable temperatures.

Cappadocia Weather in April day time temperature average: 12- 21 C

best time to visit Cappadocia, cloudy day in Cappadocia

Cappadocia in May

May in Cappadocia is the best time to visit Cappadocia in the sense that the daytime temperature in Cappadocia is increasing and the coldness of winter is over.

Cappadocia in May often brings beautiful blue skies mornings which is the best time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloons as they love clear blue skies, and historically in May they run most days of the month.

May can still bring cloud and overcast skies later on it in the day. However, Cappadocia when it’s overcast is still very beautiful.

Cappadocia Weather in May day time temperature average: 18-26 C

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Travel Tip – Be sure to book your Hot Air Balloon ride for the very first morning you’re in Cappadocia, this way, if it gets cancelled you will have your second morning and perhaps third morning to go on it. If you book it on your last morning and it gets cancelled, you have no other mornings to go!

Cappadocia in June

June in Cappadocia has been described as beautiful with beautiful warm nights as well as beautiful hot days.

Cappadocia cools down at night during the year, sometimes to a temperature that is too cold and cool, however, in June it cools down to a pleasant summer evening temperature.

The end of June brings much hotter temperatures but definitely not the hottest temperatures in Turkey, it’s hotter in other places in Turkey in June.

For the best time to visit Cappadocia, if you like the heat without it being too hot, June is the best month to visit Cappadocia!

Cappadocia Weather in June day time temperature average: 26-32 C

best time to visit Cappadocia, sunrise blue sky and hot air balloons

Cappadocia in July

Without a doubt, July in Cappadocia is hot! It was described as hot but doable by one of my friends on Instagram, but do be prepared for hot days and warm nights.

With this heat comes beautiful blue sky sunny days for most of July and there are ways to beat the heat in Cappadocia, you can go hiking and exploring earlier in the moring and around sunset and relax in your cool cave room hotel during the midday heat.

The best time to travel to Cappadocia if you want guaranteed blue sky and really perfect weather in the sense of sun is July.

Cappadocia Weather in July day time temperature average: 29-35 C

Cappadocia in August

I didn’t receive any replies on Instagram about visiting Cappadocia in August and this maybe because it is an extremely hot month to visit. The hottest month of the year .

However like in July, this heat generally brings sunny and clear days which are very beautiful and they mean that the hot air balloons are very likely to run.

The warm mornings will also make getting up early for your hot air balloon in Cappadocia much more enjoyable than in the winter months!

When looking for the best time of year to visit Cappadocia, I’d say that August isn’t it unless you are prepared for very hot and sweaty days.

Cappadocia Weather in August day time temperature average: 30-35 C

best time to visit Cappadocia, Cappadocia in summer

Cappadocia in September

The weather in September in Cappadocia changes a lot between the start of the month with the end of Summer in Turkey and the end of the month with the start of Autumn.

In 2020 I visited Cappadocia in late September and although the middle of the day was hot , it did not feel unbearable and the nights cooled down nicely.

The best thing about visiting Cappadocia in September is also that the days are usually blue sky and sunny. This is what all of my 5 days were like in September when I went with just 1 cloudy evening.

Many of my friends on Instagram also visited Cappadocia in September showing that it is a best month to visit Cappadocia with many people saying they think its the best time to visit Cappadocia for perfect weather.

If you are looking to go hiking in Cappadocia, be warned that September is still a hot month for hiking unless you go out very early or leave it until closer to sunset. Hot when hiking

Cappadocia Weather in September day time temperature average: 20-30 C

Cappadocia in October

October brings Autumn in Cappadocia and from my experience, early Autumn is the best season to visit Cappadocia for cooler but pleasant temperatures , blue skies and golden trees in Cappadocia.

The evenings and night time in October in Cappadocia definitely cool down and can get chilly if it becomes windy however the days are really lovely .

October is a great time for hiking in Cappadocia and really getting out and exploring the landscape and as for the best time to visit Cappadocia fo r hot air balloons , they may be cancelled in October but there is a good chance they will run!

In my opinion, October is another month which is the best time to visit Cappadocia and I would definitely return in early-mid October again.

Cappadocia Weather in October day time temperature average: 18-23 C

How to get the best flights??

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different destinations and different dates for the best price and route!

For example, I type in ‘everywhere’ in the destination if I have fixed dates and want to find the best flights on those dates on Skyscanner . And if I have a set destination I’ll look at the ‘month view’ to check the cheapest days to fly in that month!

Cappadocia in November

Although November is Autumn in many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, it seems that November in Cappadocia brings in Winter quickly .

The comments I got from people who had been to Cappadocia in November and spoke about the Cappadocia weather said that it was too cold, super cold and hard to wake up for the balloons because of the cold! However, November does often bring blue and clear skies !

For Cappadocia best time to go, November is not it unless you are prepared for these colder temperatures.

Cappadocia Weather in November day time temperature average: 13-18 C

Cappadocia in December

December in Cappadocia, like January and February, is very very cold .

There will be less balloons because of the weather and because of the fewer tourists and the towns, especially Goreme was described to me as feeling desolate because it was so quiet and cold.

For the best time of year to go to Cappadocia, in my opinion, it is not winter unless you enjoy cold temperatures and like the idea of it being a quiet place rather than the buzzing vibe that the middle of the year brings.

When is Winter in Cappadocia?

Cappadocia-Winter-Weather

Cappadocia’s winters run from November until February (and a little bit in March), but the harshest weather conditions are from December until February with the coldest temperatures and the most rainfall. The wind also picks up from January until March.

November in Cappadocia

November is the end of Autumn in Cappadocia and the beginning of winter. You’ll find the temperatures can still be quite mild and there’s little rainfall this month of the year. The wind is at its most calm and makes for the perfect hot air balloon flying conditions.

However, you generally won’t find snow in November as the temperatures haven’t reached below freezing yet. November is one of the best times to visit Cappadocia as the temperatures are moderate, the weather is often dry and still, and there are fewer tourists.

Don’t Miss Out on the BEST Experience in Cappadocia!

Hot-Air-balloon-Reusuable

No trip to Cappadocia is complete without taking an epic hot air balloon flight at sunrise!

Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance to avoid missing out or paying any additional fees last minute!

December in Cappadocia

December is when the temperatures start to regularly drop in Cappadocia, getting to below freezing on occasion (especially at night). It has a decent amount of precipitation, which is often turned to snow because of the cold temperatures.

During the day, the temperature stays in the single digits but plummets to below zero almost every night.

The good news is that the outdoor attractions of Cappadocia are still open and accessible, you just need to wear warm clothes. The underground cities, specifically Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, are also still open and because they are below ground, the temperature remains quite moderate all year round.

visit cappadocia in november

Hot air balloon rides still run but they are not regular, because they cannot fly during wet conditions. They also cannot land where the ground is icy, so you’ll need to plan your visit carefully if you want to add a hot air balloon ride to your visit. The wind speed is also at the lowest this time of year, which is great for flying.

If you do manage to get lucky, witnessing the landscape of Cappadocia as it’s sprinkled with snow is one of the most magical experiences you can have.

December is also around the winter solstice in Turkey , which means you have the least amount of sunlight in the day. Typically, the sun rises from 7:30 AM and sets at around 5:20 PM, so you need to factor this in if you’re going hiking.

January in Cappadocia

January is the coldest month in Cappadocia and has the same amount of rainfall as December. Temperatures reach below freezing not just at night but sometimes in the day too.

This is the perfect time of year to go skiing in Cappadocia, as you are pretty much guaranteed snow by this point and the wind is at its lowest.

However, it’s also when you will least likely find hot air balloons because the ground is often too icy for landing. That being said, it’s not impossible to do a hot air balloon tour in Cappadocia in January, as the wind speed is optimal, it just happens less regularly.

Like December, the attractions remain open in January. The days are short in January, with sunrise at around 8 AM and sunset at 5:30 PM.

visit cappadocia in november

February in Cappadocia

The temperatures in Cappadocia in February are some of the coldest all year round so you’ll need to wrap up warm if you visit this time of year. It’s common for temperatures to reach below freezing most of the day and night, and it also has the largest amount of rain all year.

February is arguably the worst time to visit Cappadocia for hot air balloon flights, as not only does it have a high chance of rain, but it’s bitterly cold. There is likely to be snow in Cappadocia throughout most of February, which is great for those visiting for skiing. The wind speed also picks up, which can often be too dangerous to fly in.

However, the days are a little longer in February with the sun rising around 7:15 AM and setting at 6:30 PM, so you have more time to explore and complete longer hikes.

visit cappadocia in november

March in Cappadocia

The beginning of March in Cappadocia is still considered winter. The temperatures are still cold and it has the biggest amount of rainfall at the start of the month. The wind speed is also the strongest at this time of year, so you’ll find hot air balloon rides at their rarest this time of year.

As the month goes on, the temperatures will warm up and the snow will start to melt. You’ll find more rain than snow, which can make it feel a lot colder than it is.

However, you’ll find more daylight this time of year compared to other winter months, so at least you have more time to explore. You can always take shelter from the rain.

Why Visit Cappadocia in Winter?

We can think of many reasons why you should choose a winter break in Cappadocia over any other season. The biggest reason is that there are fewer tourists.

People often think that winters in Cappadocia are harsh, that all the attractions have closed down, and that it’s impossible to navigate through the snow. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth is all the attractions are still open and the snow isn’t that deep, so you can still hike even in the winter. In fact, the weather is perfect for hiking as it’s cooler, so you don’t need to think about what time of day you head out. You might just need to wrap up a bit warmer, that’s all.

visit cappadocia in november

You can also ski in Cappadocia in the winter, which is largely what attracts people to the region in winter. Granted, you won’t find any challenging Alpine skiing here, the slopes are short and mostly at beginner and intermediate levels. But the snow makes everything look way more pretty whether you’re planning to ski or not.

Best of all is the cost. It’s cheaper to visit Cappadocia in winter than in the summer. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus, two of the leading airlines that fly to Cappadocia, offer considerably cheaper flights this time of year.

However, the best time to visit Cappadocia is the shoulder season between winter and spring as the prices are still low but the weather is slightly warmer.

Things to Do in Cappadocia in Winter

To prove that Cappadocia is worth visiting in the winter, here are some of the top things to do in the region during the winter months.

Be sure to add some of the following activities to your Cappadocia itinerary !

Ski on Mt Erciyes

visit cappadocia in november

You might not have considered Cappadocia to be the prime skiing destination, but then again, there’s a lot that surprises us. Mount Erciyes is a dormant volcano and the sixth highest mountain in Turkey. It measures 3,916 m above sea level and is located south of Kayseri, and East of Goreme.

It is the only ski resort in Cappadocia which opened in 2011. It has 150km of slopes on 33 pistes, all catering to beginner and intermediate level skiers. If you’re a technical or advanced skier, you might feel that Mount Erciyes isn’t up to your adventure level.

Since it’s located high up, you can likely find snow on the mountain from the end of November right through to March, making it the perfect winter activity in Cappadocia.

Turkish Bath

After a day of skiing, what better way to warm up and soothe your aching limbs than to bathe in the warm thermal waters of a Turkish bath? Turkish baths, or Hammams, were adopted from the Romans by the Ottomans and appeared in most major cities in Turkey.

But a Turkish bath is not just a bath, it’s a social bathing ritual. You’ll share a public bathing space where you’ll lie on a hot marble slab and allow the steam to open your pores. The dome-shaped room is often full of stunning mosaics and Ottoman tile-work.

If you get a traditional Turkish bath, it comes with a Turkish scrub, which is when a person scrubs the dead skin off your body after you’ve bathed, followed by a massage with foam. You can then relax in the Hamam again or a sauna to improve your blood circulation.

Hike the Red and Rose Valley

Hiking in Cappadocia is one of the best things to do in the region. There are many amazing hikes you can do, but our personal favorite is the Red and Rose Valley hike. This is because it not only offers incredible views, but it has cave dwellings, rock-cut churches and chapels, and unique rock formations along the trail, showcasing all of the best aspects of Cappadocia.

It’s also not a long hike, which if you’re traveling to Cappadocia in the winter months, is something to consider. If you want to hike for sunset, then you’ll find that you can quickly walk down from the sunset viewpoint to the valley and have a flat walk back.

Although we would never recommend hiking in the dark, we have done this hike ourselves and feel confident hiking back on this at night. Just keep a watchful eye out for animals.

If you want a short hike that’s not far from the town of Goreme, you can also visit Love Valley which takes about 15-20 minutes to see and is within walking distance of the town.

Ride in a Hot Air Balloon

hot air balloon in winter cappadocia

Riding a hot air balloon in Cappadocia during the winter is one of the most magical experiences you can have. Imagine seeing the vast desert landscape sprinkled with snow from above. It will certainly be an experience you will never forget.

However, if you want to make sure you have a hot air balloon ride in the winter, you’ll need to make sure you stay for a fair few days to account for possible cancelations due to the weather. Hot air balloon rides don’t happen every day so you need to make sure you have at least three or four days to make sure you can get a flight.

Zelve Open Air Museum

Zelve-Open-Air-Museum-Cappadocia-Featured

The Zelve Open Air Museum is one of the finest examples of how ancient civilizations lived in the region many centuries ago. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that makes up Goreme National Park and was said to have been built in the 9th-13th centuries.

The cave settlement features churches, houses, mosques, bakeries, and stables. People apparently lived in these caves up until the 1950s when they were forced to leave by the government which declared the dwellings unsafe to live in.

Visiting the museum with snow sprinkling the ground really brings to light how incredible these dwellings are and gives a real insight into how they lived all those centuries ago.

You can also visit Göreme Open Air Museum, but we personally prefer Zelve as it has more interesting buildings and you also get entrance to Pasabag Valley in your entrance ticket.

Visit Uchisar Castle

One of the most magical sites in Cappadocia in winter is Uchisar Castle covered in snow. The castle was once an epic fortress, home to 1,000 people and the entrance to the underground cities.

While it’s impressive to witness, we wouldn’t recommend you go in during the winter. This is because the ground is incredibly slippery and offers no grip, even in the summer. In the winter when there is snow on the ground, it will be even more treacherous.

However, it’s definitely worth stopping to admire from a distance.

visit cappadocia in november

Explore on an ATV Quad Bike

If hiking isn’t your thing, then you can still explore the amazing natural landscapes of Cappadocia but on an ATV instead. An ATV is a four-wheel drive motor vehicle that can cross all terrains.

If you’ve never driven an ATV before, don’t worry, it’s like riding a bike! You’ll be given a full lesson on how to ride one as well as some practice laps around a flat landing site before you set off to explore the landscapes.

From our experience, riding around on an ATV is a really fun way to experience the landscape, and because you’re visiting in winter, you won’t find many people doing it either.

You can also go horseback riding along the same routes as the ATVs, but we don’t recommend this in the winter. Think of how cold it would be for the poor horses!

Visit the Underground Cities

Kaymakli Underground City

The underground cities are a must-visit in Cappadocia. The two most popular underground cities are the Derinkuyu Underground City and Kaymakli Underground City.

The underground cities were all connected at one point, so whichever one you choose to see, you’ll pretty much have the same experience. They were built in the 7th century BCE as a way for Christians to escape from the Byzantine Arabs who were invading Turkey at the time.

Derinkuyu is the biggest and covers eight levels (four levels can be seen by tourists). It has a one-way system which means you cannot get lost. It has the widest passages of the underground cities so is the best one for those who might be claustrophobic.

Kaymakli is considered the oldest. It’s smaller than Derinkuyu with only four levels open to the public. Unlike Derinkuyu it doesn’t have one passageway, but several tunnels and passages that you can explore. This is the better option for adventurers.

Take the Red, Green, or Blue Tour

We mentioned earlier that all the attractions remain open during the winter, and it’s true! It’s even true that the tours are still operational, but not every tour company operates in the winter. This is because it’s a quiet time for tourists and some tours don’t see it as worth it to stay operating.

However, you can always find some tours still operating you just need to shop around.

If you’re not sure whether you want to try the red or green tour , or the less known but equally exciting blue tour , then here’s a quick overview of the stops.

Red tour: Uchisar Castle, Goreme Open Air Museum, Cavusin, Avanos Town (Pottery Workshops), Pasabag Monks Valley, Devrent Imagination Valley

Green tour: Esentepe Viewpoint (Pigeon Valley Viewpoint), Derinkuyu Underground City, Ihlara Valley, Belisirma Village, Selime Monastery, Onyx Jewelry Factory

Blue Tour: Red and Rose Valley Hike, Cavusin Cave Village, Local lunch in Cavusin, Özkonak or Kaymakli Underground City, Fairy Chimneys in Uc Guzeller (not included on every tour), Pigeon Valley, Uchisar Castle

Stay in a Cave Hotel

What makes Cappadocia unique is the fairy chimneys and rock dwellings. It would be a complete shame, no matter what time of year you visit, if you don’t stay in a cave hotel in Cappadocia .

In fact, staying in a cave hotel in winter is the ideal time to do so. Not only are they dry and warm places to stay, but many of them offer roaring fireplaces and have plush lounges, that are the ultimate place to kick back and relax on a winter’s evening.

Rooms tend to have heating and warm bedding all year round (it gets cold at night in the summer, too) so you can expect to have a warm night’s sleep.

Try a Testi Kebab

Testi-Kebab

Cappadocia is famous for its clay pot kebabs, also known as Testi Kebabs, and what better time of year to fill your belly with warming food than in the winter?

Dibek Restaurant is the place to go for a delicious pottery kebab experience. It’s one of the oldest restaurants in Cappadocia and is famous for its testi kebabs.

The restaurant itself is located in a 475 year old building and is operated by the same family for generations. It’s said the ground floor used to be a stables, which gives the restaurant a unique, arch-shaped architecture.

This is the place to be for home-cooked and delicious food.

What to Pack for Winter in Cappadocia

It can get really cold in Cappadocia from November to February, so you’ll need to pack accordingly. Here’s what we recommend you take with you.

  • Hiking boots – even if you’re not planning on hiking, the terrain can get slippy in the snow and it’s always a good idea to have strong, durable, and sturdy shoes.
  • Warm winter clothing in layers – while you will need to wrap up warm, if you intend on doing some hiking you’ll find that you warm up quickly. The valleys are sheltered from the wind, and the sun still shines, so it’s a good idea to wear layers so you can put more clothes on or take them off when you need to.
  • Waterproof jacket – Cappadocia receives most of its precipitation in the winter months, so it’s best to pack waterproof clothing to prepare for this.
  • Umbrella – it’s not usually super windy in Cappadocia, but it does rain a fair bit in the winter. It’s a good idea to pack an umbrella for those rainy days.
  • Hat, gloves, scarf – pack the usual clothing for cold weather, especially if you plan to take a hot air balloon.
  • Sunglasses – the sun can be bright, especially when it reflects off the snow. You’ll still likely need sunglasses, even in winter.
  • First Aid Kit – Cappadocia is safe , but if you intend on doing some hiking, be prepared to slip and fall so pack a simple first aid kit just in case.
  • Head torch – Again, if you plan on doing some hiking, remember that day light hours are shorter in the winter so it’s a good idea to carry a torch in case you have to hike back in the dark.

Hey! Thanks for the great info on this site.

I was wondering if it´s possible to hike around for example pigeon valley or red valley how you want or are the restricted areas where it is not allowed to go.

Thanks for your comment. The valleys in Cappadocia don’t have any restrictions in terms of where you can go, but there are some houses and farms in the valleys, so it’s best to stick to the trails to avoid walking on someone’s property.

If you’re hiking in winter, the trails might not be too clear as the ground is often covered in snow, so try to hike with caution. The ground can be icy and slippery so be careful.

I hope this answers your questions!

A Guide To Visiting Cappadocia in Winter: 15 Top Things To Do

Cappadocia is an incredibly unique landscape and one of the top destinations to visit, not just in Turkey but in the world. This semi-arid region of Central Turkey is home to unusual rock and earth towers affectionately known as Fairy Chimneys.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Cappadocia several times over the years and my most recent visit was during Winter.

But not just any winter.

The winter of 2021/2022 was the most snowy winter in over 70 years. This meant I was lucky enough to see the beautiful Fairy Chimneys in all their snow covered glory.

Following this most recent, magical visit, I decided to put together this guide on visiting Cappadocia in winter.

Why Visit Cappadocia During Winter?

1. less tourists.

Tourism during the winter in Cappadocia has actually grown a lot over the last few years. It used to be a ghost town in winter, so I was actually surprised at the number of tourists milling around the streets.

However, tourist numbers in winter are far less than during the peak summer months, where you’ll have to jostle for room at sunrise and sunset viewpoints and pre-book balloon rides weeks in advance.

2. Lower Prices

Since tourist numbers are lower, businesses have to work a little harder to get punters through the door and this means lower prices.

3. Everything Looks Even Prettier In The Snow

Cappadocia is a truly special landscape to witness, however with a dusting of snow these unique rock formations look extra special. A real Winter Wonderland!

4. Everything Is Open

Well, almost everything!

Balloon rides still fly (weather permitting), tours still run, shops still sell souvenirs and restaurants still serve food. We also found that the ticket offices to popular sunset spots like Rose/Red Valley and Göreme Hill close early in Winter, which meant entrance to these areas were free in the afternoons/evenings. Winning!

5. It’s Cooler For Hiking

Hiking around the Fairy Chimneys is a must-do on any trip to Cappadocia, but in the summer months this can be a very hot and stuffy affair since there’s not much shade on offer. However, this isn’t an issue in the cooler months of winter which is a huge bonus in my book. Just be sure to pack warm clothes and sturdy shoes!

When Is Winter In Cappadocia?

Winter in Cappadocia runs from November through to April. Although snow may fall in November, it’s more common in December, January and February. Since most of the Cappadocia region is over 1000m above sea level, winter in Cappadocia is typically very cold.

The average temperature for these months is around 5 degrees however, evening temperatures are much lower than this.

What To Pack For Winter In Cappadocia

Winter in Cappadocia is cold and often snowy come prepared with appropriate clothing:

  • Hiking boots or boots with good grips – the ground will be wet, snowy and even icy so make sure you have footwear that will provide grip and warmth.
  • Warm jacket – with temperatures that can drop below zero, especially for those sunrises and sunsets, be sure to have a warm jacket such as the North face down jackets we use.
  • Rain jacket – Precipitation mostly falls as snow during the Winter months so a decent rain jacket will ensure you keep dry.
  • Woolie hat/ beanie – You need to keep your head cosy warm during the cold snaps so put that beanie in the suitcase.
  • Gloves – whilst you’re out and about hiking or perhaps enjoying a sunrise balloon ride, you want gloves that will keep you warm so you can still operate your camera and capture all those magical moments. Try these touch screen gloves .

The Top 15 Things To Do In Cappadocia In Winter

1. hot air balloon ride over snow covered fairy chimneys.

It might be a cliché but this is the most popular thing to do in Cappadocia , no matter what the weather.

And for good reason.

Floating high above the Fairy Chimneys as the sun slowly rises is one of those experiences you’ll never forget.

Flights last around 1 hour and expect to share your basket with around 20 people. Balloon rides typically cost 150 Euros, which I think is excellent value for money, however in Winter this can drop to 60 Euros. Click here to check the latest price and book your spot or use the booking form below.

Premium flights with fewer people are also available for a slightly higher price as are flights with a champagne breakfast.

2. Watch the balloons fly from ground level

It’s amazing to take a balloon flight but it’s equally impressive to see the balloons fly from ground level.

Now, if you’re lucky you will be able to watch the balloons from your hotel rooftop. (See my suggestions on this later) However, if your hotel doesn’t have this feature then the easiest place to watch sunrise and, weather permitting, the balloons take off, is from Göreme Hill Sunset Viewpoint.

It’s a short, albeit steep walk, up through the windy streets to the top of the hill from where you can look out across the whole region. As the name suggests, this is also a good option for sunset but I think there is an even better option, which I talk about next.

3. Enjoy sunset over Rose/Red Valley

There are so many good places to enjoy sunset in Cappadocia that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one place. However, due to colourings on the rocks at Rose and Red Valleys, this surly has to be top of the list.

At sunset the golden hour rays light up the rocks of Rose and Red valley and enhance their colour even further. It really is a magical scene to witness and something you must do on your winter trip to Cappadocia.

From the centre of Göreme it’s a 6km drive to the sunset viewpoint over Rose Valley. There is an entrance fee to pay along this road but in the winter these gates are unmanned in the evenings, so it’s free to enter.

You can drive all the way to the end of the road and enjoy sunset from there, but I believe the better view is from the viewpoint further back, which has a coffee shop and love heart photo point. From this point you can see the cliffs light up and look down along the length of Red valley.

Without a car, the better (and shorter) option would be to walk out of town and enjoy sunset from within Rose Valley itself. The walk is 3km and will take around 1 hour one way. From the viewpoint you can watch sunset over Göreme and Uçhisar Castle and in the other direction you can see the valley cliffs light up. Remember to take a torch for the walk home!

4. Warm up with a Hammam in Ergup

A hammam is a hot steam bath followed by a massage. This is a popular pastime in the Middle East and is the perfect thing to do on a cold winters day in Cappadocia.

Many places in and around Göreme offer hammams, but the Heybe Hammam and Turkish Bath in Ergup offers the full Turkish experience. It’s not the cheapest but offers a top quality service and has a swimming pool if you fancy a dip afterwards.

5. Feast on delicious Anatolia cuisine

All around Göreme you will find restaurants offering pottery kebabs, also known as Testi kebabs. This is an Anatolian speciality prepared in a clay pot. The pot is filled with meat of your choosing in a tomato based stew.

When the dish is served the pot is set on fire and the clay pot is cracked open to release its contents. Yup, pretty awesome!

However, the signature dish of Cappadocia is in fact, Manti. These are small packets of pasta stuffed with meat or cheese and served with a tomato and garlic sauce. Sort of like ravioli. Outside of Göreme, in the less touristy towns of Nevşehir and Kayseri, you will see this dish everywhere.

6. Visit a carpet shop

This is a must-do experience on any trip to Turkey and Cappadocia has some of the best carpet shops in Turkey. Even if you’re not in the market to buy, you can still venture into the shops and admire all the intricate carpets on offer and experience carpet salesmen at their very best!

If you’re looking for the highest quality carpets then I recommend Sultan Carpets . Ali the owner is a great guy who’ll be sure to find the right carpet for you. If you just want to have a photo shoot amongst all the beautiful rugs at SultanCarpets, then you can also do that here for 10 Euros per person.

Carpet shopping is a must-do in Cappadocia during Winter

7. Wrap up warm and enjoy a Quad Bike Tour

One of the most exciting ways to see the sights of Cappadocia in winter is by a quad bike/ ATV tour. There are several ATV tours to choose from ranging from 2 hours to all day. I enjoyed the 2 hour sunset tour which allows you to ride amongst the Fairy Chimneys in the soft light of golden hour.

In the winter, amongst the snow and slush, there is the extra challenge of not getting your ATV stuck!

8. Visit Uçhisar Castle

Standing watch above Göreme town is Uçhisar Castle. This 60m rock-cut castle mountain offers arguably the best view in all of Cappadocia . There is an entrance fee to enter the castle and quite a few stairs to climb to reach the top, but the views are most certainly worth it. The rooms in the base of the mountain are free to explore.

From Göreme you can walk to Uçhisar castle through Pigeon Valley. It’s a 3.5km walk one way. Trails are marked on the Maps.me. app. Alternatively, it’s 5 minutes by car or bus. The bus destined for Nevşehir leaves from Göreme town centre. Just let the driver know when you get on the bus that Uçhisar castle is your stop and he’ll let you know when to get off.

9. Saddle-up for a horse ride like no other

If you prefer horses rather than horsepower, a good alternative to seeing more of the area is on horseback. You can choose from 2 or 4 hour rides, with prices ranging from 45-85 euros.

The horseback tours explore Swords Valley, Meskendir Valley, Rose Valley and Love Valley. These are all Cappadocia must-sees.

Click here to book your Cappadocia horseback riding experience.

10. Embark on a winter hike

Hiking the valleys around Cappadocia is an amazing way to explore this surreal landscape. On these walks you are able to climb amongst the Fairy Chimneys and venture inside the abandoned cave houses and churches.

There are many valleys and many walks to choose from. Two of my favourite walks around Cappadocia are Uçhisar Castle to Goreme through Pigeon Valley and Goreme Open Air Museum to Çavuşin through Red and Rose Valley.

Good weatherproof hiking boots are essential if there is deep snow as it can get slushy in the afternoons.

Again these trails are all marked on Maps.me.

Winter in Cappadocia

11. Visit an Open Air Museum – Goreme, Zelve, Pasa Baglari Muze

Cappadocia has several Open Air Museums and they are definitely a must-see on your Winter trip to Cappadocia.

Göreme Open Air Museum is just on the outskirts of Göreme, so it’s the easiest to visit on foot if you’re based in Göreme. This is included on the Red Tour (see later) and contains the fresco-filled Dark Church (for an extra fee), which is arguably the most impressive church at the site.

Farther out of town you can find Paşabağları, which is a small site but has the quirky feature of having a Jandarma (Turkish Police) station in one of the Fairy Chimneys.

A little further along this valley brings you to Zelve Open Air Museum. Originally a monastic retreat, Zelve was lived in by villagers until 1952 when it was deemed unsafe. This is a great site to clamber around later on in the day when the tour groups have left. Remember to take a head torch with you!

12. Visit an Underground City – Kaymakli or Derenkuyu

There are over 200 underground cities in the Cappadocia region, although only a few are open to visitors. The two most visited are Derinkuyu and Kaymakli.

These subterranean cities offered protection from outside invaders, allowing the Christian inhabitants to live their lives in complete secrecy.

Derinkuyu is the bigger of the cities and the deepest underground city in all of Turkey. In Kaymakli the tunnels are low and steep so it gives you a real feeling of being underground. Perhaps not the best if you’re claustrophobic though!

Both cities can be reached by dolmuş (public bus) from Nevşehir or car if you have one. One of the cities is also included on the Green Tour. (see later). Alternatively, this tour visits Seratli Underground City, a Caravanserai and Lake Tus, which is an incredulously pink salt lake .

visit cappadocia in november

13. Explore the region on a Guided Tour – Green, Red, Blue

One of the easiest ways to see the best of what Cappadocia has to offer is to join a guided tour. This is especially true if you don’t have your own transport.

Several tours visit various locations around Cappadocia but my favourite is the Green Tour . This tour includes Ihlara Gorge and an Underground City, both of which are around a 30-60 minute drive from Göreme. It also visits the beautiful Selime Monastery and various panoramic viewpoints around Cappadocia.

In winter there won’t be as many tour buses visiting the sites so you won’t feel like you’re being herded around like sheep, as you often do in the summertime.

14. Stay in a cave hotel

If you’re visiting Cappadocia in winter then one of the top things you can do is stay in a cave hotel. There are many to choose from but I enjoyed Kookaburra cave hotel . It’s small, with a lovely rooftop terrace from which to sit back and enjoy sunset or get up early and watch the balloons at sunrise.

It’s centrally located in Göreme and the rooms are warm and cosy, despite being cut out of rock. The rooms are very affordable and the owner is also a pretty entertaining character to chat with!

If you have a larger budget try the luxurious Cappadocia Cave Suites or Sultan Cave Suites. Both are located in Göreme and both have stunning terraces to enjoy the fabulous surrounding landscape.

If you really want to push the boat out and stay in a cave hotel with your own private Hammam, take a look at Kayakapi Premium Caves.

Staying at a cave hotel is a must for a Winter trip to Cappadocia

15. Go skiing on a volcano

An increasingly popular activity in Cappadocia is skiing at Mt Erciyes. This volcano tops out at 3346m and offers 55km of slopes via 14 chairlifts. This ski area is geared up for beginners and intermediates, so advanced riders might find the terrain a little limited.

Lift tickets are sold on the number of lifts you will take, so as a complete beginner you might only need 1 or 2. The next bundle up is 14 and the bundle after that is 30. In February 2022, 1 run was 20TL (1 USD) so it’s very affordable. There is also ski and snowboard rental available at the resort.

We enjoyed our two days exploring Mt Erciyes, but I would avoid visiting on a weekend as it was incredibly busy. If your ski level permits it, be sure to take the chairlift right to the top so you can get a close up view of the volcano crater.

If you don’t have your own transport you can book a tour which provides transport and an introduction to skiing/snowboarding  Check it out here .

Where To Stay In Cappadocia During Winter

One of the top things to do in Cappadocia is stay in a cave hotel so accommodation options are mostly centred around these. In Göreme itself, a budget friendly option is Kookaburra cave hotel . It’s small, centrally located, with a lovely rooftop terrace from which to admire the views.

With a more premium budget take a look at Cappadocia Cave Suites or Sultan Cave Suites, both of which are again based in Göreme .

Outside Göreme in nearby Uchisar you could stay in the gorgeous Museum Hotel . This boutique hotel houses priceless antiques and boasts an outdoor heated swimming pool if you’re brave enough to try it. Meanwhile Kelebek Special Cave Hotel has its own Turkish Bath and Spa treatments, which is the perfect way to warm up on those cold Winter days.

Where To Eat In Cappadocia

One of the newest restaurants in Göreme is Chef Kebab. This restaurant offers all the top Turkish dishes and great value for money. They provide complimentary fresh bread and a selection of meze dips, water and cay. I can recommend the beef and aubergine Güveç as well as of course the Testi kebab. This is a great budget option in Göreme although they do not serve alcohol at this restaurant.

Learn more about Turkish cuisine in this guide.

For dinner in a more unique location, try the Organic Cave Kitchen . This restaurant is located in a huge rock just below the Göreme Sunset Hill. The terrace offers beautiful views over the town and is the perfect place to end a Winter’s day in Cappadocia.

For a light bite at lunch or for evening drinks and a shisha, I recommend Fatboys bar and cafe in central Göreme.

Winter In Cappadocia Summary

There are some places in the world where I’m more than happy to visit multiple times and Cappadocia is one of those places. The landscape is so unique you can never get bored of exploring the region.

In winter, Cappadocia takes on an even more majestic air, with dustings of snow highlighting the surreal rock formations even further.

If you’re happy to take on the cold temperatures, Cappadocia is a great winter destination. During winter there are less tourists and prices drop accordingly. Top activities such as hot air ballooning, horse riding and ATV tours still run. Carpet shops, souvenir shops and restaurants are still open for business, which means you’ll still be able to enjoy everything this Turkish delight has to offer.

What Is Cappadocia? What Is The History?

The Cappadocia area has been settled by humans since prehistoric times, and over the centuries it’s been occupied by the Hittites, Persians, Romans, early Christians, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks and Ottomans.

Historically, Cappadocia Turkey is probably best known for being a place where Christians settled and sought refuge from the hostile Roman Empire, secretly carving thousands of houses, churches, and caves into the hills.

Most of these rock buildings and underground cities can still be seen today, and they look just like Star Wars movie sets. Supposedly George Lucas wanted to film parts of the original Star Wars movies in Cappadocia, but the Turkish government turned it down.

Cappadocia is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site , and today it’s one of the tourism hotspots of Turkey. It draws millions of tourists every year (3.8 million in 2019!) who come to enjoy the unique landscapes, cave houses, and hot air balloon rides.

Where Is Cappadocia Turkey?

Cappadocia is located in central Turkey, and the nearest major city and airport is Kayseri.

The Cappadocia tourist area includes the small towns of Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup, but almost everyone bases themselves in Goreme since it has the best hotels and restaurant choices.

How To Get To Cappadocia Turkey

The best way to get to Cappadocia Turkey is to fly domestically from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport (SAW) to the Kayseri airport (ASR).

There are a bunch of flights doing this route every day and it only takes 1.5 hours. A one way ticket can cost as little as 150 Liras ($20 USD)! You can shop for flights to Kayseri at Skyscanner.

After you arrive in Kayseri, you’ll need a van transfer since it’s a 1 hour drive to the Goreme town center in Cappadocia. You can arrange this with your hotel, or book it online.

I recommend pre-booking this top rated Cappadocia shared airport transfer for as low as $7 USD per person. They also have private airport transfers for $30 USD. We’ve used this company ourselves and had a great experience!

How To Get Around Cappadocia

  • Walking: If you’re staying in Goreme and want some exercise, a bunch of nice sights will be in walking distance from your hotel. Some ideas would be Rose Valley, Lovers Hill (sunrise point), and the countless cave houses and churches.
  • Horseback: This is another fun way to go sightseeing in Cappadocia. You can find 2-hour horseback riding tours online starting at $50 USD.
  • Car + Driver: The most comfortable and efficient way to explore Cappadocia is to hire a private driver . Prices for a 4-8 hour tour start at $60 USD. If you have a couple of friends joining you, this can be very economical. If your group is bigger than 3, you can even hire a private van for even better savings.
  • Scooter: As a solo traveler, renting a scooter in Goreme can be cost effective sometimes. Prices run about $30-$40 USD for the whole day.
  • ATV: Quad biking can be another fun way to see Cappadocia, and the terrain is perfect for it. You can find Cappadocia ATV tours online starting at $25 USD for 2 hours.
  • Group Tour: There are lots of Cappadocia group tours that you can join if you’re a couple or solo traveler. These normally include hotel pickup, lunch, and a full day of sightseeing. Read the section below for some more info on recommended Cappadocia tours!

Best Cappadocia Tours

The 4 popular tours in Cappadocia are color coded (Red, Green, Blue, Orange) and each one covers a different area of Cappadocia. My personal favorites are the Red Tour and Green Tour .

The Red Tour covers sights like Devrent Valley, Monks Valley, Avanos, the Goreme Open Air Museum, and Uchisar Castle. The Green Tour covers Ihlara Valley, Melendiz River, Selime Monastery, Pigeon Valley, and the Derinkuyu Underground City.

The Blue and Orange tours are less popular, and they cover sights like Ortasihar and the Gulsehir Open Air Museum. I didn’t do these tours, but we plan to try them next time we visit Cappadocia.

For the Red and Green tours, you can book them with a tour agency on the street in the Cappadocia, or you can pre-book the same tours online, which is what I did.

GetYourGuide has the Cappadocia Red Tour for $35 USD, or the Green Tour for $55 USD, with free lunch and hotel pickup included. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

How Long To Stay

At least 2 full days in Cappadocia are needed if you want to do both Red and Green tours and see the highlights of the countryside.

I’m sure you could spend longer too if you want to hit up more of the hiking paths and leave no stone unturned. Besides, Goreme town is a great place to get stuck, with loads of good Turkish restaurants!

If you plan to do the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon ride, I would add at least 2 extra days to your itinerary in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. The balloon rides can get canceled on windy days, so it’s good to have a little extra time as a safety buffer.

Best Time To Visit Cappadocia

The best time to visit Cappadocia Turkey just depends on what you’re looking for. It’s a nice place all year round, but the temperatures go up and down quite a bit with the seasons.

Cappadocia has hot summers, and cold winters with snow. In either season, the landscapes will be stunning and photogenic, and hotels have air conditioning and heating so you’ll still be comfortable.

I went in the autumn (October) and this seemed just about perfect. The crowds weren’t too bad, and the leaves on the trees were almost at peak color.

Spring would also be a great time to visit, because you’ll get cooler temperatures and less crowds.

Happy travels!

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Cappadocia?

Experience the magic of Cappadocia in the perfect season for outdoor adventures and mesmerizing hot air balloon rides!

cappadocia hot air balloons large

Turkey is a geographically diverse country where you can enjoy the merits of each season. The best time of year to visit Cappadocia is a hard pick because you see many facets of this beautiful place in different seasons.

So, when is the best time of year to visit Cappadocia? You can plan your visit to Cappadocia between April to June and September to October. The winter often brings snow, and the peak season during the summer months can be overcrowded.

So, why is this time frame the best time of year to visit Cappadocia? Next, we’ll talk about the diverse climate and geography of Turkey.

The Climate of Cappadocia Throughout the Year

To understand Cappadocia’s climate, first, you should know the exact location of this beautiful area. Cappadocia sits almost at the heart of Anatolia, which is modern Turkey, a little to the east. The Taurus Mountains are in the south, and the Black Sea is in the north.

Cappadocia is located in the inner part of Turkey, where the continental climate is dominant. In such areas, the winters can be cold, and snowfall for an extended period is regular.

On the contrary, the summers are arid. These aren’t the seasons you want to be outside to do sightseeing.

Typically, spring and fall are the best seasons to enjoy what nature offers in areas with a continental climate. The weather can be windy in spring and fall. Still, most of the time, the weather is suitable for outdoor activities like sightseeing or hiking.

When you take a closer look at each month of spring, you can see certain differences. March is still a tad cold compared to April. Sometimes, you can see snowfall, even in March. This fact makes March not an ideal candidate for a visit.

April and May have temperate weather; however, April can still be windy if you consider hot balloon tours.

Generally speaking, the fall is the second good option to visit Cappadocia. During September and October, the weather is still reasonably warm.

Nevertheless, you can feel the footsteps of winter coming around the end of October. November isn’t so viable since the freezing wind will surely keep you from enjoying the scenery and nature. Consider all these factors before booking your trip and packing your suitcase with the right kind of clothes for your visit .

Let’s take a better look at the geography of Cappadocia to learn more about the climate.

Geography of Cappadocia

As we mentioned before, Cappadocia is pretty close to the heart of Anatolia. This region is a high plateau surrounded and covered with mountains from north and south. Cappadocia is on a plateau, which is about 1000 m (3281 ft) in altitude.

In the south, the Taurus Mountains, which is actually a range, directly affects the climate. These mountains stop the airflow coming from the Mediterranean Sea.

The rain-bearing clouds can’t reach the region from the south because of the high peaks. That’s why the area doesn’t get much rainfall and is classified as semi-arid.

The unique feature of this area is the antique volcanic activity. Many dormant volcanic peaks can be found in this region. The highest peak is Mount Erciyes, and that is about 4000 m (13 123 ft) high.

These volcanic peaks are the result of the rise of the Taurus Mountains and the moving of the Anatolian Plateau to the north due to this formation.

After the volcanic activity ceased in the area, the remaining tuft became a layer on the plateau. The lava and basalt mixture covered the tufted layer.

With water and wind corrosion, these layers were shaped intrinsically. This process is how the hoodoos, commonly known as fairy chimneys, were formed in this area.

In antiquity, Cappadocia was shaped by water; however, now it’s semi-arid because of the same reason that created the layers of tuft in the first place.

This is the short story of how the spectacular geography of Cappadocia was formed. Geography directly affects the climate and the reasons for visiting Cappadocia.

Now, let’s see some of the tourist attractions on this iconic landscape and when to do which activity in this region.

When to Take a Hot Balloon Ride in Cappadocia

The allure of Cappadocia is all about the unique geography. Ancient people from millennia ago understood this area’s beauty, and they decided to carve their cities right in the volcanic formations.

Nowadays, Cappadocia isn’t just about seeing the beauty of this landscape. The tourist attractions are also undoubtedly impressive.

Of course, most of the places you’ll visit in Cappadocia are going to be in the open air. The first and foremost tourist attraction of this area is the hot air balloon rides.

To see this spectacular geography from a distance, many tourists hop on to the baskets. They take a magnificent tour of the region on the air.

Since hot air balloon rides are all about the weather, you should consider the climate if you want to do it in Cappadocia. According to many tourists, the best time to take a hot air balloon ride is between May and June in the spring/summer season, September and October in the fall season.

This time April may not be the best time since the winds are the main problem. They directly affect the takeoffs of hot air balloons.

If you plan to be in Cappadocia for a few days just for the hot air balloon experience, April can be a bit risky. June seems to be the ideal period. July will be quite crowded since it’s the peak tourism season of Turkey in general.

In addition to the hot air balloons, you can do hiking and outdoor sports like mountain climbing in your preferred season. It’s wise to know that winters can be harsh for these types of activities.

Especially for trekking, to see the magnificent underground cities and visit the ancient sacred monasteries, winter and summer aren’t the best options.

All the time, we emphasized that winter isn’t an ideal time to visit Cappadocia. However, if you want to see this unique region, the hot air balloons are year-round.

In addition to this, most of the hotels are open year-round. In these hotels, you can enjoy the scenery of Cappadocia with warm hot chocolate in your hand in an affordable luxury hotel . Staying in a cave hotel makes for an interesting winter getaway.

Sometimes, the allure of hot air balloon tours makes Mount Erciyes go unnoticed when you consider visiting Cappadocia. If you like skiing, Mount Erciyes is a good alternative for even the Alpines.

Plus, the region won’t be overcrowded this season. Don’t fret about visiting Cappadocia even in winter.

Where to Stay

  • Staying in any cave hotel around Cappadocia will be an unforgettable experience. At Hezen Cave Hotel (link to see availability on Expedia) you can immerse yourself in the mysterious atmosphere of this fairyland. The fairy chimneys will be your view at breakfast or under a starry night, and you’ll be surprised to see that the cave rooms have natural air-conditioning. It will definitely be an authentic experience.
  • Olivia Cave Hotel (link to see availability on Expedia) is a budget-friendly alternative to the mysterious-looking cave hotels in Cappadocia. This hotel is in the small town of Göreme within easy reach of all the landmarks, but also to the supermarkets and shops. The stone building has excellent rooms with authentic decor, so you’ll still breathe in the magical atmosphere of the town, and the guest reviews are great.

Closing Thoughts

Cappadocia is a region that amazes its visitors. It’s impossible not to wonder and daydream about the formation of these fairy chimneys, the people who lived in the underground cities, and the sacred rituals done in the monasteries. Indeed, this region is filled with so much to experience .

Cappadocia offers you its unique facets in every season. If you are all about hot air balloon rides and outdoor sports, maybe the end of spring and the start of fall is the best choice for you.

Most tourists come to this region for this attraction and to visit the underground cities. Don’t forget that even in winter, you can still find amazing tourist attractions.

Come to Cappadocia to see it for yourself!

Cappadocia in November

In early November weather in Cappadocia just good

Cappadocia in November 2023 – is it worth visiting? Weather, whether balloons fly, what to wear, hotel and tours prices. What to do in Cappadocia in early November and close to the winter, how to get there from Istanbul or Antalya – in the review of good Time for Trip.

It has already been said more than once, therefore – we emphasize! Cappadocia today has become a year-round tourist destination.

In terms of popularity, this region has far surpassed other famous Turkish attractions like Pamukkale or Ephesus and has become completely self-sufficient – many people come here purposefully.

Not in order to unwind, bored at the resorts or after visiting Istanbul sights , but by making Cappadocia the main and often the only goal for their trip. And this makes sense!

After all, in winter Cappadocia is perhaps more beautiful than in summer. And in other seasons – for example, in the beginning and middle of autumn – it flaunts such colors that tourists literally don’t have enough words to express their feelings. They prefer to just watch, frozen in admiration.

Are you still in doubt, wondering if you should visit Cappadocia in November? According to deep-rooted beliefs, the most rainy and cloudy month of the year?

In vain, many reviews claim that such a trip is definitely

Worth Considering!

Even more – subsequently it will not make you regret the choice. And regardless of the weather, will give unforgettable impressions!

  • After all, balloons fly in Cappadocia even in November – they are indifferent to cold and snow!

In addition, the fee for this entertainment is reduced. Because best local hotels know the rules of the game very well and fight for clients.

Local landscapes at the end of autumn are much more deserted and mysterious. And touch the soul even more than in a sunny and more optimistic time.

  • Best Months of the Year for Visiting Cappadocia

In November weather in Capadocia is clear sometimes

Weather in Cappadocia in November

Usually meteorologists promises instability. That is: one day will be warm and bright, and the next – cold and gloomy. And – which is very surprising – often such a forecast comes true!

With one amendment – cold at this time means the air temperature is not lower than + 5-7 °C. And that – at night!

In any case, November 2022 in Cappadocia turned out just like that. Not all, of course, its first half.

The air temperature during the day walked within + 15-20 °C, at night it dropped to +10 °C and less. At the same time, there was a lot of sun, precipitation practically didn’t act on the nerves.

As well as the winds – the beginning of November in Cappadocia is statistically the calmest time of the year. That is, it’s best suited for balloon flights .

Moreover, there are not very many tourists, and you have the opportunity to get a discount. In the air, by the way, or on the ground – prices for guided tours in the valleys fall significantly .

Further, from the middle to the end of the month, the weather deteriorates. Basically in the sense of temperatures – in the daytime becomes as earlier nights. And in the early morning it becomes no longer up to admiring the multicolored domes – often around 0 or even frosty.

Of course, a warm fur jacket and a cup of coffee on the rooftop terrace of your hotel in Göreme can reconcile you with reality.

But at least the first one you will have to put in the suitcase when packing. Even if you are going to go to Cappadocia after a beach holiday in Alanya in November .

You can see the current weather forecast in Cappadocia, for example, here – weather25.com/europe/turkey/cappadocia .

What to Wear

Gloves, hats, scarves and sweaters as an alternative should also be included. As well as comfortable and warm enough shoes. Which will allow you not to injure your foot and not get too cold when hiking in valleys and exploring cave churches .

Note that sometimes the local weather surprises in the form of snow-covered landscapes. Which, by the way, is also good!

Because the hills covered with a white veil are very beautiful. And they appear in a completely different, some kind of unreal, alien form.

In the late November it's pretty cold in Cappadocia

Prices 2023

November is a frank off-season for the designated region. Therefore, you can rely on a significant discount. Even in a very comfortable cave hotels, you can find a room for less than 50 € per night – by modern local standards, this is quite inexpensive.

Pay attention to Chelebi Cave House Hotel , whose 9.5 rating is quite justified. Given the modest price tag, the high quality of the rooms and the helpfulness of the staff.

The corresponding figure flaunts under the name of Hanzade Suites , a slightly more expensive hotel in the heart of Göreme. But the bus station is very close to it, and the views from the roof are excellent!

Approximately 35 € per day for two costs the room in the popular cave hotel Elite Cave Suites . The views from the terrace of which cause a surge of extremely positive emotions among the guests.

Of course, an interesting option, at least from the point of view of independent sightseeing in Cappadocia , is car rental. If you don’t have one, or it stayed at home …

As for excursions, as well as flights, they become cheaper in late autumn. Sometimes significantly – the same “Red” or “Green” travel routes in the region are sold at a significant discount.

Are you still in doubt? Because you have had plans to visit November Istanbul and walk along the Bosphorus?

In vain – a visit to the former Constantinople, where it is convenient to combine with a visit to Cappadocia! Since getting from Istanbul to Göreme even by car or by bus will turn out relatively quickly – in 7-10 hours.

You will say that this is dangerous – bus accidents involving tourists in Turkey have become too common. But in this case, you will go on a regular bus. That has no reason to rush…

What to Do in Cappadocia in November

There are many possibilities. So much so that without developing a clear route of movement through Cappadocia  in advance, you may well get “lost”. And as a result, you will not have time to inspect something “obligatory”.

Some tourists here are so calm that they don’t even want to go anywhere. Just sit on the hill and soak up the aura of the place.

Well, maybe sometimes they wander along solitary paths without choosing a direction. Admiring the rocks of bizarre shape and color, the frescoes of the Byzantine period in the local cave churches.

But for others, a trip to Cappadocia on the threshold of winter is an occasion to show unprecedented activity. And see literally everything that guidebooks talk about .

Visit the stone mushroom groves in Pasabag and exercise your imagination on the rocks of the Derwent Valley. Find at least one local Love Valley (of 2). And see the Dark Church in the open-air museum in Goreme itself.

Will there be time for a walk through the Pigeon Valley to the Ukhchisar fortress? Or visiting churches in the remote Ihlara Valley ?

Will you be able to go to Chavushin to compare the cities of the past with the modern ones? Wander through the labyrinths of Derinkuyu or neighboring Kaymakli – are they the only ones in the whole world?!

You will have to find the answers to these questions yourself, based on the possible duration of the vacation. Since it is difficult to see even a part of the above in a couple of days.

In November air balloons do fly in Cappadocia

How to Get There

In this paragraph, we will only talk about how you can get to Cappadocia from the popular tourist places of Turkey.

There are several routes, depending on where you are going to start from. But, in principle, it will take 7 hours or more to travel by land (bus, car).

After all, the distance to Cappadocia from Istanbul is about 700 km. And from Alanya it’s about 200 km less. But Bodrum, on the contrary, is too far away!!

Arriving in the region by plane in transit through Kayseri Airport will be faster, but also more expensive. Although if you regularly monitor air tickets sites, you will definitely stumble upon a sale from the local low-cost airline Pegasus.

Cappadocia is one of Türkyie's most popular destinations for a good reason – its stunning scenery is quite unlike anywhere else.

When this is coupled with a rich cultural heritage full of ancient historical sights and warm, welcoming people, it's easy to see why it becomes a must-visit on everyone's Türkyie  itinerary.

Don't feel overwhelmed by all the options – we've rounded up the eight most spectacular places to visit in Cappadocia , so all you have to do is book those tickets and go.

Best place for fairy chimneys

One of the top draws for tourists visiting Cappadocia is its iconic fairy chimneys – stacks of soft tuff rock formed by volcanic upheavals and then weathered into otherworldly shapes over millennia. They can be found across Cappadocia, but the central town of Göreme has perhaps the best concentration in its surrounding valleys.

Take a hike through Red or Güllüdere (Rose) Valley in the late afternoon to admire the fairy chimneys as they turn fiery red in the evening light, or wander through Love Valley where the chimneys have formed into particularly suggestive shapes.

Göreme is also an essential stop for history lovers – in the Byzantine era, many of the fairy chimneys were hollowed out and used as monasteries. The monks decorated the interior caves with brilliant frescoes, many of which have survived to the present day and are now preserved in the must-see Göreme Open-Air Museum .

Planning tip: The valleys around Göreme are particularly suited for one-way hikes. If you have a car, save yourself doing them as out-and-back trips by parking at the endpoint and taking a taxi to the trailhead.

Best place for Seljuk heritage

Many travelers skip Kayseri in their haste to reach Cappadocia’s iconic attractions, but this large and bustling city is well worth a day or two’s exploration. It’s one of the best places in the country to check out the elegant architecture left behind by the Seljuks, who ruled much of Türkyie in the thirteenth century.

The black-stone castle in the city center is of Seljuk construction, though it’s been extensively restored and looks a little over-pristine. Across the road, however, is the Mahperi Hunat Hatun Complex , a mosque and madrassah which are perfectly preserved. Check out the intricate carving around the portal of the mosque, and enjoy a glass of çay in the madrassah’s atmospheric courtyard. While in town, you can also get an insight into life in the Ottoman period at the outstanding ethnographic museum in the fifteenth century Güpgüpoğlu House.

Planning tip: Allow yourself an afternoon to take in Kayseri’s various sights. Start at the Museum of Seljuk Civilisation in Mimar Sinan Parkı and work your way south to take in all the city’s big hitters.

Best place for historic valleys

The busy city of Aksaray, in Cappadocia’s west, is of relatively limited interest to travelers but it’s a pleasant place to base yourself for visits to some of the region’s cultural highlights – the valleys of Ihlara and Güzelyurt (also known as Monastery Valley). Both these wide canyons make lovely scenic walks, and the cliffs on either side are lined with Byzantine cave churches which are ripe for exploring.

The Ihlara Valley is an especially impressive and popular route, offering a well-defined path that follows a gushing river along the canyon floor, past cave churches containing some of the best frescoes found in Cappadocia. The Yılanlı Kilise (Snake Church) is a characterful highlight, its lively images depicting four snakes biting people as punishment for various sins.

Güzelyurt Valley, meanwhile, is a quieter walk. Its churches are perhaps a little less dramatic but it gets fewer visitors and is a lovely peaceful route through gorgeous surroundings.

Detour: Make a quick stop at Aksaray Museum , where you can see a collection of 1000-year-old mummies that were discovered in the Ihlara Valley.

Best place for quirky museums

The small town of Avanos, 8km (5 miles) north of Göreme, makes a refreshing change of pace if you’ve seen plenty of fairy chimneys and Byzantine churches; here, the attractions are pleasingly offbeat. Start with a visit to the Güray Müze , an underground art gallery that displays beautiful pieces from contemporary Turkish artists, and also boasts quite an astounding array of ceramics in its attached shop.

Then head over the river to the truly one-of-a-kind Chez Galip Hair Museum , which is exactly what it sounds like – a collection of locks of hair, attached to the walls and hanging from the ceiling, all donated by female visitors to the museum. There’s nowhere else quite like it.

Tourist man in Kaymakli underground city ancient cave in Cappadocia, Turkey

5. Kaymaklı

Best place to wander underground

The Byzantines might have burrowed into Cappadocia’s soft rock to produce churches, but the inhabitants of Kaymakl ı went one better – digging deep into the ground, they developed a huge network of caves and passageways now known as Kaymaklı underground city .

Visiting this subterranean labyrinth is a unique experience. It’s fascinating to imagine how people lived in this hugely complex site which contains all the essentials for daily life, including bread ovens, wine presses, horse stables, and vast shafts to ensure clean air circulation.

There are several such underground cities in Cappadocia – nearby Derinkuyu is bigger, but Kaymaklı is more fun to explore as its passages encourage random wandering, and smaller visitor numbers make it feel less claustrophobic.

6. Aladağlar National Park

Best place for multi-day treks

Down in Cappadocia’s south is the beautiful and rarely visited Aladağlar National Park, which is one of Türkiye’s most unspoiled trekking destinations. From the village of Çukurbağ, you can take paths through craggy limestone gullies leading you up onto alpine plateaus and eventually to the gorgeous Yedigöller lakes. The routes are lengthy and there are few that can be tackled as a day hike, but if you enjoy multi-day treks and camping amidst stunning mountain scenery, Aladağlar National Park is a great destination.

Detour: While in the area, check out the nearby Eski Gümüşler Monastery , which is one of Cappadocia’s most overlooked highlights. A cave monastery dating back to the Byzantine period, the frescoes at Gümüşler are some of the best in Cappadocia, including a stunningly well-preserved Nativity scene and a rare image of a smiling Virgin Mary.

Best place for local wine

The volcanic soil of Cappadocia is ideal for grape growing, and for many centuries this part of Türkiye was a major wine production region. The industry took a downturn in the early twentieth century but it’s expanding again with the town of Ürgüp leading the way.

Take a tour of the friendly Turasan company’s factory and sample their excellent vintages, or stop by in September when the town hosts the Cappadocia Vineyard Festival. Alternatively, you could just relax in one of the town’s many wine bars and enjoy a glass or two.

Detour: While in town, make sure to take a look at the rock formation known as the Three Beauties . It’s an iconic Ürgüp landmark that's featured on many Turasan wine bottle labels.

Skiing in Turkey

8. Erciyes Dağı

Best place for winter sports

Cappadocia probably doesn’t spring immediately to mind if winter sports are mentioned, but there’s an excellent ski resort at the mountain of Erciyes Dağı, a short distance south of Kayseri. It’s one of the highest mountains in Türkiye and is a very popular destination for skiers, with ski lifts, equipment available to rent, and plenty of runs for all abilities. Outside the winter months, the mountain offers good trekking opportunities, so you don’t need to limit yourself to the winter season.

Cappadocia Pronunciation

For most of my life growing up in Canada, I always pronounced Cappadocia a certain way. But, after a good chat with my tour guide in Cappadocia, he said there are two different pronunciations that are acceptable and used regularly.

The word Cappadocia in Persian means ‘ Land of Beautiful Horses ’, which leads to me daydreaming of wild horses running through the beautiful Cappadocia landscape at sunset. But, frivolity aside, here they are:

‘Ka·puh-dow-shuh’ (most English speaking countries go by this)

‘Ka·puh-dow-kee-ya’ (this is how my Turkish tour guide pronounced it)

Cappadocia Travel Guide

What Cappadocia Really Means

I learned so much from my tour guide while visiting all of the Cappadocia attractions (which should always be the case, really). He told me that the word Cappadocia wasn’t used in Turkey until the boom of Cappadocia tourism in the last few decades.

The Turkish geographical naming system usually names regions after the largest city in that region. In this case, Nevsehir is the largest city in the region. But, once tourism picked up, it was confusing for visitors because they thought locals were talking about the city and not the region.

Therefore Cappadocia was adopted to describe the collection of the four cities of Nevsehir, Kayseri, Aksaray and Niğde at each corner of the region.

Amongst this region are smaller towns such as Goreme (the main tourist town in Cappadocia), Urgup, Avanos, Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, Aksaray and Uchisar.

Where is Cappadocia Turkey

The area of Cappadocia is located in the centre of Turkey on the eastern edge of the region of Central Anatolia. Cappadocia is diverse with many mountainous areas and plains. Cappadocia is located approximately 725 km from Istanbul .

Cappadocia History

The landscape.

The tourist region of Cappadocia is surrounded by three volcanoes , Mt Erciyes, Mt Hasan and Mt Gullu. Don’t worry, they are either dormant or haven’t erupted in millennia. But, what these three volcanoes did about 60 million years ago was cover this region in lava and ash for centuries. My tour guide described it as ‘ hell on earth ‘.

What this eventually did was blanket the region in soft layers of rock, called ‘tuff’ , composed of cooled lava, ash and minerals. Over millions of years, this material was eroded by wind and rain creating what we now know as the unusual and otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia . This includes the popular fairy chimneys that can stretch to 130 feet in the air.

This soft rock layer or ‘tuff’ was taken advantage of by humans due to its malleability. Houses, storage rooms, churches and many other structures, including the famous underground cities, were carved into this rock by persecuted Christians in the Roman period.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Due to Cappadocia’s unique history both geographically and humanly, the landscape here has become popular for Cappadocia cave hotels . These rooms carved into the soft rock material of the region were built to maintain temperature during the extreme height of summer and chilling weather of winter.

Today, the cave hotels are a sought-after novel attraction and a quintessential Cappadocia experience. These cave hotels are some of the best places to stay in Cappadocia.

Of course, in Cappadocia, you can find any type of hotel from luxury boutique hotels to backpacker hostels. So finding where to stay Cappadocia shouldn’t be hard. Plus, you’ll likely want a hotel where you can watch the hot air balloons take flight at sunrise from the patio.

Where the difficulty lies for most travellers is what town to stay in Cappadocia . If it’s your first time, the definitive answer is Goreme .

The famous cappadocia cave hotels.

If you only have a couple of days in Cappadocia, you can still experience the best part of this region by staying in one of the novel cave hotels in Cappadocia . What staying in a Cappadocia cave hotel grants you is an authentic experience without even leaving your room!

Due to the influence of social media, sitting on the outdoor patio of any cave hotel in Cappadocia at sunrise watching the hot air balloons has become synonymous with this magical destination.

Cappadocia Travel Guide

It’s important to note that most Instagrammable hotels in Goreme do not allow non-guests to enter at sunrise , so you will need to book a stay at a cave hotel in Cappadocia that comes with a stellar view if you want to incorporate this experience.

Note, most hotels in this region come with a large traditional breakfast included in the price.

The town of Goreme (the main tourist spot) is situated on a hill with tiers of homes and hotels lining the slope.

At the top of the slope, you will have famous luxury cave hotels such as Koza Cave Hotel , Mithra Cave Hotel and Sultan Cave Suites Cappadocia. These hotels in Cappadocia with a view will have the most epic views of the hot air balloons . Do note, that because these hotels are heavily involved in influencer marketing, you will have many influencers around you trying to get the shot at sunrise.

Angel Cave Suite

More economical Cappadocia caves hotel options can be found a bit lower down the hill at places like Angel Cave Suite . All of these cave hotel Cappadocia options come with a view of the hot air balloons, albeit a bit less fancy.

Best Hotel in Cappadocia with Balloon View

I do have to admit, watching the hot air balloons fly at sunrise from the top of my hotel was my most memorable experience in Cappadocia . It will stick with you for years I’m sure. I would highly encourage you to prioritize this experience even over the luxurious cave hotels.

Goreme Hotels in Cappadocia

Many hotels that don’t have cave rooms have ‘cave-like’ rooms still on offer . Made with stone walls, these hotels still give you a feeling of authenticity but with a much more affordable nightly price tag. But what really counts is access to a grand view of the hot air balloons at sunrise . I’d recommend Antique Terrace Suites and Village Cave House hotel for this experience.

If you do feel like Cappadocia is the perfect place to splurge (which I would tend to agree!), then staying at the famous cave hotels like Koza Cave Hotel , Mithra Cave Hotel and Sultan Cave Suites are the best options for this.

These three hotels are some of my favourite hotels in Cappadocia to see balloons .

Uchisar hotels in cappadocia.

If you decide to stay near the Uchisar Castle, my recommendations for a Cappadocia hotel with hot air balloon view would be the mid-range Rox Cappadocia or the ultra-luxe Museum Hotel . or Argos in Cappadocia . Do note, because Uchisar Castle is a bit further away, the balloons wouldn’t be as close.

Best time to visit cappadocia.

The best time to visit Cappadocia is in the shoulder months of April to May and September to October . The weather in Cappadocia Turkey during this time is bright and sunny with a temperature of 22 degrees during the day. This is also the best time to go to Cappadocia for a successful hot air balloon ride at sunrise .

Nights can get a bit chillier so bring a warm layer.

I visited Cappadocia in November and unfortunately experienced a cloudy hot air balloon ride with no view of sunrise. It was still a great time, but if you want to have a better chance of a colourful awe-inspiring balloon ride, visit in the shoulder months.

Temperatures during November were warm during the day though so adventuring through the Cappadocia valleys and open-air museums was super pleasant. Nighttime gets chilly.

NOTE | There were multiple days of cancelled sunrise balloon rides during my time in Cappadocia in November, so Cappadocia weather can be a major factor in the enjoyment of your trip.

Cappadocia Summer

Travelling to Cappadocia in the summer months of July and August will offer scorching temperatures (averaging 32° celsius) and far more crowds.

Cappadocia Winter

Cappadocia Travel Guide

Cappadocia in winter can be a magical experience and one everyone should consider. While temperatures dip below 0°, with a maximum daily high of 4°, a hot air balloon ride overlooking the otherworldly landscape blanketed in snow can be an amazing experience.

Pack your parka and snow boots and enjoy a romantic and/or fun-packed trip in Cappadocia winter.

How Many Days in Cappadocia Turkey

After spending 10 days in Cappadocia and never running out of things to do, I’d highly recommend staying for at least 4 days . No matter what month you decide to visit Cappadocia, there is always the possibility of cancelled hot air balloon rides due to weather.

Staying for 4 days in Cappadocia will give you the best chance to complete this quintessential Cappadocia experience while still having time to explore everything else this region has to offer.

If you only have 2 days in Cappadocia or 3 days in Cappadocia don’t fret! Take a look at the things to do in Cappadocia below to prioritize the best sights that suit your travel style for the perfect Cappadocia itinerary. Or, alternatively, choose an organised day tour to hit all your favourite Cappadocia highlights.

How to Get to Cappadocia

There are multiple ways how to get to Cappadoccia that suit any timeframe and budget . Due to the popularity of Cappadocia Turkey, you can find flights, car rentals and bus lines heading toward this magical destination.

First, I will outline general ways how to get to Cappadocia, then I will talk about how to go to Cappadocia from Istanbul specifically.

You can fly directly to Cappadocia from any major city in Turkey and even some major cities outside of Turkey. Since the region of Cappadocia has two airports (Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and Kayseri Erkilet Airport) it’s very easy to find a flight for any time or budget. The main airlines that fly to Cappadocia are Turkish Airlines , Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress .

I personally use Skyscanner to book short-haul flights within Turkey (and globally).

Nearest Airport in Cappadocia

There are two airports in Cappadocia Turkey, the Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and the Kayseri Erkilet Airport located in their respective cities. The nearest airport to Cappadocia is the Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport .

The Nevsehir Airport is located about 40 minutes by airport shuttle or Cappadocia rental car to the west of Goreme (the central tourist town in Cappadocia).

If you do decide to fly into Kayseri Erkilet Airport, no worries, there are frequent airport shuttles and rental cars from there too, taking approximately 1.25 hours from the east of Goreme.

Whichever you choose to land, rest assured they are both highly serviced Cappadocia airports with plenty of options on how to quickly and best get to the centre of the region.

Renting a car and driving in Turkey is one of the best ways to see the country. Road conditions in Turkey are great, with smooth wide roads with clear markings.

The Perfect Turkey Road Trip

One of the best ways to do this is to pick up your rental car at the Istanbul airport , drive towards Cappadocia , then down to the emerald coastline of Turkey (especially the drive between Antalya and Fethiye). After driving north to the famous Pamukkale thermal pools, make your way to Ephesus and then drive back to the Istanbul Airport to drop off your car. A perfect 10 days in Turkey .

Exploring Turkey this way allows you to save money since you will be picking up and dropping off your car in the same place avoiding those pesky fees, and you can make stops in smaller more economical towns along the road for accommodation purposes.

Since the region of Cappadocia is located in the centre of Turkey, you can go in any direction and find some pretty great adventures. But, for the sake of time, I would recommend either heading from Cappadocia to Pamukkale thermal pools or to Antalya on the coastline (depending on your preferences).

Since I spent 6 weeks exploring Turkey I had plenty of time to take a flight from Cappadocia down to Antalya and hop along from quaint seaside town to quaint seaside town. If you are looking to fit in as many Turkish highlights as possible, the Pamukkale thermal pools should be your next stop.

How to Get Around Cappadocia

Cappadocia car rental.

Since Cappadocia is technically a region and all of its attractions are spread out, I’d recommend renting a car for your time spent in Cappadocia. Pick up a rental car at either the Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport or Kayseri Erkilet Airport, explore Cappadocia and then return it at the airport on your way out. Super easy.

Check out my detailed guide to renting a car in Cappadocia

Organized Day Tour of Cappadocia

The region of Cappadocia has many day tours available which are broken down into the red tour , green tour and blue tour to identify different areas within Cappadocia. Take a look at the section below about organized day tours in Cappadocia for an in-depth breakdown.

Cappadocia Minibus

There is a local minibus service that runs every 2 hours between the main towns of Avanos, Goreme, Uchisar, Nevsehir and Cavusin. The cost of the bus is 0.40 euros and 1.10 euros depending on where you get on and off.

You can technically get off anywhere along the route if you ask your driver, but for most attractions, you will still need to walk from your drop-off point.

In my humble opinion, taking the minibus is time-consuming , so if you only have 2-4 days in Cappadocia, I’d opt to rent a car or take an organized tour.

Hot Air Balloons in Cappadocia

Cappadocia Travel Guide

Best Cappadocia Hot Air Balloons Tour

Floating above the unusual landscapes while the golden sun parts from the horizon, ahhhhh, what an iconic and quintessential Cappadocia experience. Booking a sunrise hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is a must, you absolutely can’t leave Cappadocia without doing it.

Be ready for an early wake-up call on the day of your flight, between 4:30AM and 7:30AM depending on the time of year and weather forecast. You will get picked up in a luxury transport van, enjoy a light breakfast and be taken to the Cappadocia balloon launching site. Here you will witness the crew blowing up your hot air balloon and readying it for your epic flight.

visit cappadocia in november

Most flights last from 60-90 minutes and take off just before sunrise. Where the balloons fly really depends on the weather and wind patterns, so you will likely experience different Cappadocia highlights on any given day. Upon landing, you will be given champagne, cake and a flight certificate . A great way to end a memorable experience like this.

NOTE | If you are visiting Cappadocia and a hot air balloon ride is at the top of your list of priorities, make sure to stay at least 3 nights just in case your ride gets cancelled unexpectedly due to weather. This can happen more than you think, so be prepared. I would hate for you to leave Cappadocia disappointed.

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Price

Cappadocia hot air balloon price options really vary, since you can book anything from 36 people in a basket to a private flight, and every company is different. But, if you are looking for rough estimates for budgeting purposes, expect to pay at least $75 USD to $150 USD per person depending on the service level.

Best Tours of Cappadocia

Booking an organized day tour is the best way to see the region in my opinion. This is what I did and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The knowledge from the tour guide makes it worth the price and you learn so many interesting facts about Cappadocia to supplement and enhance the attractions.

Most tour operators offer 3 different tours depending on what region of Cappadocia you’d like to explore. Tours of Cappadocia are broken down into red tour Cappadocia, green tour Cappadocia and blue tour Cappadocia.

Each tour recommended below offers an all-inclusive experience with hotel pick up, lunch and attraction entrance fees provided. Drinks are excluded and groups are limited to 15 people.

Red Tour Cappadocia

visit cappadocia in november

The red tour in Cappadocia focuses on the north end of the Cappadocia region and includes the following attractions:

  • Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley)
  • Pasabagi Valley (Fairy Chimneys)
  • Avanos to make pottery
  • Göreme Open Air Museum
  • Uchisar Castle

BOOK | Red Tour Cappadocia Day Tour

Green Tour Cappadocia

The Cappadocia green tour is the most active day tour and includes hiking through valleys and up to panoramic views. Expect to hike over 4km in the day (likely more). The green tour is fittingly named since it explores the surprisingly lush areas that Cappadocia offers.

Green tour highlights include:

  • Goreme Panorama
  • Kaymaklı Underground City
  • Ihlara Canyon (3.8 km hike)
  • Yaprakhisar Panorama (Star Wars filming set)
  • Selime Monastery
  • Pigeon Valley

Blue Tour Cappadocia

The Cappadocia blue tour explores central and southern parts of the region and includes highlights like the underground city (a must see!) and a casual hike along the Red and Rose Valleys.

  • Hike along the Red and Rose Valley
  • Cavusin Cave Village
  • Underground City
  • Greek houses of Uchisar
  • Ortahisar Castle

ATV Tour Cappadocia

ATV tours are another common way to explore the rugged terrain of Cappadocia. You can take a 2 hour ATV Cappadocia tour either during the day or at sunset . Common valleys that will be explored on these tours are Sword, Love, Red and Rose. The staff will make sure you are comfortable driving the ATV before taking off on the safari, no worries.

Private Tours of Cappadocia

If touring around Cappadocia with a small group is not your jam, I’d recommend taking a private tour of the region. This tour includes the main Cappadocia highlights , plus hotel pick up and drop off, a professional historian, a luxury vehicle with driver and attraction entrance fees.

This is what I did, and I was super happy with the experience.

Map Cappadocia Turkey Attractions

Since attractions in Cappadocia are further apart, I’ve created a map to help you plan out your adventures around the region and make the most of this dream trip.

I’d recommend starting in one area and exploring the nearby attractions before moving onto another area. This way you will save time that would otherwise be wasted going back and forth across the region.

Things to do in Cappadocia

Wondering what to do in Cappadocia besides a hot air balloon ride? This region in Turkey has so much to offer, from unique rock formations, ancient cave churches, underground cities, picturesque valleys and more.

1. Watch Sunrise from your Cappadocia Hotel

visit cappadocia in november

Watching the sunrise from my hotel terrace in Goreme with the hot air balloons flying above is one of my best memories from my time in Cappadocia. My #1 recommendation is to make sure you can watch the Cappadocia balloons from your hotel rooftop or terrace.

If you are booking your hotel and are unsure if they offer this, reach out through email to the hotel staff before booking. This is something you cannot miss when in Cappadocia , and is sometimes even more enjoyable than a balloon ride (although I’d highly recommend doing both).

Yes, you will have to wake up awfully early to watch the balloons, make sure to check your weather app (I use AlpenGlow specifically to find out when the sunrise will be) to find out when to be on the terrace.

Cappadocia Turkey

Because some balloons fly just before sunrise and some launch just after sunset, I’d suggest waiting around for a bit, sipping on some Turkish coffee and just enjoying the experience.

TIP | Bring a jacket! Due to Cappadocia’s landscape being desolate, mornings can be quite chilly here. Be prepared and bring a warm layer and even a beanie. I visited in November and mornings were between 2-5 degrees Celsius before rising to 20 degrees during the peak of the day.

2. Visit the Famous Valleys in Cappadocia

Due to the volcanic landscape of the region, Cappadocia valleys are plentiful. Each Cappadocia valley offers something a little different.

Pigeon Valley is the home to thousands of pigeon homes carved into the rock faces, Love Valley is renowned for the famous phallic rock structures, and Rose and Red Valley has the perfect panoramic viewpoint for sunset.

Pigeon Valley Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

Pigeon Valley (or Guvercinlik Valley) is a central Cappadocia attraction and one of the most famous valleys of Cappadocia . With thousands of tiny pigeon homes carved into the rock face, it’s an interesting place to explore.

After reaching the entrance, first, take a look from the panoramic viewpoint. Here you can see the entire valley leading to the towering Uchisar Castle at the opposite end.

Stop at the evil eye tree and make your way down the stairs to the hiking trail . This casual trail will take you all the way into Uchisar if you are up for a walk through the valley.

Love Valley Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

Love Valley Turkey is an iconic Cappadocia attraction due to the natural phallic rock structures present here. But, this is not all Love Valley has to offer. One of my favourite morning experiences was watching the sunrise and the hot air balloons from the Love Valley panoramic viewpoint .

Like most Cappadocia valleys, the valley of love offers a great hiking trail if that’s your cup of tea.

Rose + Red Valley Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

Rose Valley and Red Valley are interconnected just a 10-minute drive outside of Goreme. Both valleys take their names from the pink colour of the stone featured here. This stone changes colour at different times of the day.

Rose Valley and Red Valley both turn red at sunset which makes it an optimal time to visit. A common way to experience these valleys is through a sunset ATV Tour or horseback riding adventure .

I opted to watch the sunset from the panoramic viewpoint with a glass of wine that I got from Gulor Wine Cave on the way there. It was a perfect experience.

Devrent Valley Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

Otherwise known as Imagination Valley Cappadocia, Devrent is full of interesting shaped rock formations .

Similar to looking at clouds and seeing bunnies, Devrent offers you the opportunity to see different human and animalistic shapes. We are talkin’ elephants, penguins and twirling women in skirts.

A great stop combined with the fairy chimneys of Pasabag Valley and Zelve Open Air Museum.

3. Explore the Open Air Museums

The region of Cappadocia is steeped in history and the open-air museums are a great place to learn about it. Large churches, storerooms, kitchens and living spaces have been carved into the soft rock hills over the centuries and have been well preserved by the Turkish people.

Goreme Open Air Museum is the most famous of the two popular locales due to its well-preserved religious paintings covering the rock-walled Cappadocia churches.

visit cappadocia in november

I’d also recommend visiting the Zelve Open Air Museum if you get a chance since it’s a much different experience with cave rooms littered through a small valley oasis.

Cappadocia Turkey

4. Underground Cities in Cappadocia

visit cappadocia in november

Derinkuyu Underground City and Kaymalki Underground City are famous Cappadocia attractions. Over the centuries, Cappadocia didn’t have a military presence so instead of experiencing attack after attack, the people of the region took advantage of the soft rock and built cities underneath the surface .

These underground cities are up to 10 stories deep and can fit up to 10,000 people . And these two popular destinations aren’t the only underground cities, there were over a 100 littered all over the landscape. A great hiding place against constant attack from neighbouring regions.

If you are afraid of confined spaces , this might be a triggering experience. Just know that these underground cities are well-maintained and often patrolled for damage.

5. Visit Cappadocia Castles

visit cappadocia in november

Uchisar Castle was formed into a large and prominent rock formation in the centre of the town of Uchisar. As the highest viewpoint in Cappadocia, it enjoys panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

If you’d like to experience the views, head up the well-built stairs, or explore the surrounding rock formations and homes.

Uchisar is not the only Cappadocia castle though. Another statuesque rock castle in the region is in the town of Ortahisar. Ortahisar Castle can be viewed from the panoramic viewpoint located just across the small valley from the castle itself.

6. Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia Pasabag Valley

Cappadocia Turkey

These dwellings located inside interesting rock formations became a UNESCO world heritage site in recent years to protect and preserve history. These ‘fairy chimneys’ served as homes to the persecuted Christians in the region.

The fairy chimneys are located in Pasabag Cappadocia valley ( Monk’s Valley ) and can get very busy during the day with large tour groups. Visit early.

7. Cavusin Cappadocia (Old Greek Village)

Cappadocia Turkey

The town of Cavusin is home to a small group of Greek rock houses and the beautiful Church of St John carved into the landscape. The church features well-preserved religious frescoes if that’s of interest to you. You can climb up the hill and explore the village. The trip should take you less than an hour.

Cavusin is located a 10-minute drive from Goreme.

8. Go Carpet Shopping in Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

When you think of Turkey you can’t help but have images of Turkish carpets pop into your head. Cappadocia, especially Goreme has a couple of great carpet shops for perusal.

Other the years one particular carpet shop called Galerie Ikman Cappadocia has turned into an Instagram hotspot with constant photo shoots happening in the space. If this interests you, make sure to contact the owner early and reserve a time. There will be a fee for using the shop for photos.

If carpet shopping is your goal, venture over to the lesser-known Sultan Carpets to purchase your Turkish keepsake.

9. Day Trip to the Pink Salt Lake Turkey

visit cappadocia in november

About a 2 hour drive west of Goreme, you will find a beautiful pink salt lake called Lake Tuz (or Tuz Golu). This is one of Turkey’s main salt lakes and is a treat to visit, especially during the shoulder seasons of April-May and September-November.

Due to evaporation in the summer months , the pink waters can be a bit of a walk through a dry salted landscape which can be tough on the feet.

I’d only recommend adding this to your Cappadocia itinerary if you have at least 4 full days in the region and have a rental car available to you. While there is a designated ‘entrance’ to the lake, I’d suggest stopping on the side of the road where the lake looks inviting to you and walking in from there.

10. Turkish Bath Cappadocia

A visit to the local hammam is a quintessential Turkish experience , and something you should do at least once on your visit to Turkey. Book yourself a spa treatment and Turkish scrub for after your sunrise hot air balloon ride. It’s a perfect way to warm up and relax.

Kelebek Special Cave Hotel has a great spa.

Best Cappadocia Restaurants

Cappadocia, especially Goreme, is full of restaurants catering to tourists. But, if you know where to look you can have a really pleasant local experience with quality food and service.

Here were my favourites:

PUMPKIN | This restaurant in the heart of Goreme offers set menus of local specialties including clay pot Kebab. The soup, salad and dessert were also extraordinary. Grab yourself a bottle of local wine and you have an amazing evening out. My top recommendation!

OMURCA ART CAVE | The perfect little eclectic lunch place . This second-floor family-run restaurant is home to many cats , so expect to be visited during your meal. The food here is homemade and absolutely delicious. I had the local bean salad and soup and was stuffed full. Cash only.

TURKISH RAVIOLI RESTAURANT | You guessed it, they specialize in the Turkish ravioli dish called Manti . You can’t leave Cappadocia without a plate of this scrumptious stuff. I wouldn’t be surprised if you visited twice.

Cappadocia Guide: Is Cappadocia Safe?

How safe is Cappadocia? After 2 months of travels through Turkey, I can say without hesitation, that Cappadocia is very safe. Centred around tourism, the majority of locals speak English and are more than happy to help you out in a crunch.

As one of Turkey’s tourism hot spots, you will also find a very high calibre of hotel staff and tour guides to make you feel comfortable and at ease. You can rest assured that you won’t have pushy salespeople in your face 24/7, either.

Cappadocia Travel Guide Conclusion

So, there you have it, the ultimate Cappadocia travel guide complete with my recommended things to do in Cappadocia. From epic Cappadocia cave hotels, ATV tours, and scenic valley hikes, to awe-inspiring sunrise Cappadocia hot air balloon rides, there’s something for everyone.

Hey guys we are planning to visit cappadocia this year in november, is it a good time to go for air ballons and activities or it will be like a ghost town?

Do you think the weather will be good in November there?

' class=

November is winter so it will be colder, shorter days. Exactly how it will be cannot be predicted. Have a look at weather here - https://www.captivatingcappadocia.com/cappadocia-weather-november/

Ballooons fly all year round, subject to weather (mainly wind conditions) on the day. Always book for your first day so you can try again on subsequent days if need be.

It will be quieter, touristwise but everything is still there!

visit cappadocia in november

Kapadokya is not a ghost town in November. It is the historic name of the large region with several small towns. You will see tour buses and tour groups at the museums and tourist attractions. You will need a winter cloth or a jumper at nights. The weather is much colder at nights there than the days. There is a big difference between day and night temperarture.

We are visiting Cappadocia Tom 4th November. Which of the sunset or sunrise hot air baloon is a better experience

I’m not aware of any sunset balloon trips, only sunrise.

So did you went to Cappadocia? What was your experience and cost? I'm planning to go to Cappadocia on 26 November

' class=

i am visiting cappadocia nov 16 -18 :)

' class=

I too am planning a few days Nov 24-28th

I'm from Minnesota and use to the cold, but with 5 months of total travel, not sure I will have warm enough clothing/boots for snow.

Best start your own thread but ......where else are you travelling and when? It isn’t very likely that there would be much/ any snow in Cappadocia in November, though it will certainly be chilly, especially at night. You may need the same type of cloning elsewhere.

If you go on an air balloon ride, make sure you have really warm clothes. It can be 10 to 15 degrees centigrade colder up there. If you’re not dressed appropriately you will be utterly miserable.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Climate And Seasons In Cappadocia

Cappadocia’s four seasons offer an enchanting symphony of nature and adventure. The region’s continental climate changes with each passing month and transforms the landscape, providing a unique experience each season.

Of course, since Cappadocia’s seasons are quite different from one another, you should know the characteristics of different seasons to figure out which one works for you. Here’s all you need to know about the four seasons in Cappadocia and the average temperatures:

Spring (March-May)

Spring invigorates nature and brings life to Cappadocia’s plains and mountains. Around this time, winter’s chilly slumber sloughs away, and days become warmer, reaching 15-20°C (59-68°F).

As wildflowers paint Cappadocia’s valleys vibrant hues, grape vines drape over fairy chimneys to welcome the season of rebirth.

Even though spring temperatures are ideal for discovering Cappadocia, visitors usually don’t flock to the area until summer. Therefore, pleasant weather and fewer crowds make the shoulder seasons of spring and fall the best season to visit Cappadocia.

In spring, the best month to visit Cappadocia is April since it’s warmer than early March, and the peak season is still a few months away.

What are the advantages of visiting cappadocia in the off-season.

Colorful hot air balloons before launch in Goreme national park

Cappadocia might be a popular spring and summer destination, yet visiting the area in the off-season offers some outstanding advantages.

Here are the reasons why you should visit Cappadocia in the off-season:

  • Everything is cheaper : Cappadocia is among Turkiye’s most touristic areas. Since tourism significantly contributes to the area’s economy, accommodation and food prices often soar during peak season. Nevertheless, if you’re on a budget, you can visit the region in winter and enjoy cheaper prices.
  • Cherish the unique winter scenery : If you like snapping pictures to immortalize your experiences – or post on your socials – Cappadocian winter will be your pretty subject. Once the first snow falls, it dusts the fairy chimneys and creates a dramatic, fairytale-like scenery.
  • A great place to celebrate Christmas : Although Turks don’t celebrate Christmas in Cappadocia as a religious holiday, Cappadocia might be the best place to celebrate Christmas. The region was once home to one of the world’s earliest Christian communities and was shaped by their efforts. Today, you can see many rock-cut churches and abandoned shrines in the area’s various corners. Also, even though Turkiye doesn’t have a concept of Christmas, they celebrate New Year on December 31 with great exuberance.
  • Try winter activities : Winter in Cappadocia is the perfect season for different activities and sports, especially skiing. Mount Erciyes in Kayseri is one of Turkiye’s most popular and largest ski resorts . Plus, since Kayseri is the historic capital of the Cappadocia region, you can enjoy its cultural and historical legacy. The city has many museums and historical landmarks that offer a glimpse into the region’s rich past.
  • Have more intimate experiences : Visiting Cappadocia in winter is the perfect way to have more personal experiences with fewer people around. You can chat with the locals, learn about their cultures, and enjoy the open-air museums without overwhelming crowds.
  • Enjoy the cozy atmosphere : The best thing Cappadocia offers is peace and coziness. With its otherworldly landscape and quiet atmosphere, the area is perfect for a quick getaway from the urban crowd. All you have to do is sit beside the fireplace in your cave hotel room, enjoy the tranquility, and bask in coziness. No wonder ancient people chose this place to secure themselves from the outside world.
  • Pleasant hiking weather : We must admit the cold winter months aren’t the best time to hike through valleys and explore hidden trails . However, the cold Cappadocia weather in November and December offers a better hiking experience than the scorching summer sun – as long as you wear proper clothes.
