lisieux tour

The religious city of Lisieux draws vast numbers of Catholic visitors. In fact, it is considered the second most important pilgrimage site in France, thanks to its 19th-century saint, Thérèse Martin. Thérèse’s popularity also explains Lisieux’s extravagant 20th-century hillside basilica, which outdoes its medieval cathedral and is often compared to the basilica of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre in Paris.

A BISHOP’S PALACE

For Catholics, Lisieux is synonymous with the young  Thérèse Martin , a model of 19th-century piety. However, Lisieux has a much longer history, going back to Roman times. Then, with the establishment of the duchy of Normandy in medieval times, it became the  seat of a bishop’s palace , with a cathedral. The bishop-counts of Lisieux were forceful figures in Norman events. In town, the neighbourhood around the cathedral known as the Quartier Canonial has retained a number of impressive buildings once associated with the important religious administration based here, run in part by canons. Religion has long been a powerful force in Lisieux.

The Second most important pilgrimage site in france

La basilique de Lisieux

Tragically, a major part of the historic town was destroyed in World War II bombings. However, many of the places associated with the greatest figure of 19th-century Lisieux,  Thérèse Martin , survived. Born in Alençon in the south of Normandy, Thérèse moved with her family to Lisieux when she was four. Following the example of her older sisters, she became fascinated with religious life from an early age. She joined the Carmelite nunnery in Lisieux at the exceptionally tender age of 15, by special dispensation. Not just because of her exemplary pious life, but also because of her clear writings on faith, she became  one of the best-loved Catholic figures of her century . She died young, having achieved a great deal. In the 1920s, she was made a saint, as  Sainte-Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus . In 1997, Pope John Paul II declared her just the 33rd Doctor of the Catholic Church because of her spiritual writings – at the time, she was the only woman to be given this exceptional title. Some  700,000 pilgrims  visit Lisieux every year, making it  the second most important pilgrimage site in France .

Château-musée de Saint-Germain-de-Livet

Don’t miss

Follow in the footsteps of Sainte-Thérèse . Born in Alençon on 2nd January 1873, Thérèse lived in Les Buissonnets when her mother died. This house – where she lived from the age of four to the age of 15 (the age at which she entered the convent) – holds the memories of Thérèse’s childhood. The Carmelite Chapel houses the Shrine of the Saint and the Hall of Relics contains souvenirs relating to Thérèse’s daily life. The Diorama of Sainte-Thérèse’s retraces, through a gallery of wax figures, the main stages of Therese’s life.

Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse : The largest church built in France in the 20th century, this enormous 93m-high domed edifice stands out on the hillside above Lisieux. The interiors, visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year, are dazzlingly ornate, decorated in neo-Byzantine style. An exhibition presents Sainte-Thérèse’s life and the Carmelite Order.

Just like Pope Jean-Paul II, who made a pilgrimage to Lisieux on 2 June 1980, follow in the footsteps of Sainte-Thérèse of Lisieux and of her parents Louis and Zélie Martin, canonised in 2015. The ‘In the footsteps of Saint Thérèse’ walking trail, marked on the ground with a blue line, invites you to discover the main places associated with the saint.

Cathedral of Saint-Pierre : Down in the town centre of Lisieux, this cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in early Gothic style. It holds the tomb of Bishop Cauchon, who tried Joan of Arc. Thérèse Martin went to Mass in this cathedral.

Maison des Buissonnets : This was the pretty townhouse where the Martin family moved from Alençon when Thérèse Martin was four. She lived here until she was 15 years old and entered Lisieux’s Carmelite Monastery. Walking around the rooms, you get a good idea of her early life and devotion.

Musée d’Art et d’Histoire : This art and history museum occupies one of the finest timber-framed houses left in the town centre, and displays fascinating objects reflecting the history, popular art and traditions of Lisieux and the surrounding Pays d’Auge area.

Church of Saint-Jacques : This church holds exhibitions in the summer.

Hôtel du Haut Doyenné : This fine 18th-century stone and brick building was the former residence of the Haut Doyen, the second most important religious figure in Lisieux after the bishop.

Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet : just south of Lisieux, this chateau, known as the ‘wonder of the Pays d’Auge’, is now owned by the town of Lisieux. Situated at the bottom of a valley, it is a 16th-century architectural gem, with its coloured, patterned stones and green-varnished bricks. The interiors are embellished with 16th-century frescoes and 18th- and 19th-century furniture. Numerous drawings and paintings are on show from the Riesener Collection, one of whose representatives was a cousin of Delacroix.

Cerza Safari Park (in Hermival-les-Vaux): This safari park is home to 500 wild animals across an area of 123 acres. A safari train takes visitors on tours, and at certain times of the year, visitors can even reserve one of the safari lodges and stay the night in the park!

History about Lisieux

France houses several of important religious tourism destinations. One of them is Lisieux, a city in the region of Normandy where St. Therese of the Child Jesus lived and died.

The city is known worldwide for its pilgrimages organized in honor of Saint Terese and is the second place of pilgrimage of France with 700,000 visitors a year.

THE BASIS OF LISIEUX – a project that took 25 years (1929-1954) and which saw the World War II very closely, more precisely in June 1944, was punished by bombings that destroyed several homes in the Norman style.

For a few days the bombs fell on the quiet city, but the intercession of St. Therese prevented the destruction of Carmel, the Buissonnets and the Basilica. This Basilica served as shelter for women, children and religious, especially the Carmelites, headed by Mother Ines de Jesus.

CHAPEL OF CARMEL – The monastery of the Carmelites in Lisieux was founded in 1838. Terese entered in 1888 with 15 years of age to follow her vocation. The chapel was recently renovated and one can see objects that have direct connection with the Saint.

THE SAINT PIERRE CATHEDRAL – Norman Gothic style from the XII-XIII century, this building was the seat of a bishop until the French Revolution. Terese attended this church until she entered Carmel.

Next to the entrance to the chapel where she made her first communion. In the background, a modern statue marks the place where she participated in the mass with the family. The main altar was his father’s offer in 1888.

THE CARMEL – The monastery was founded in 1838. It was there that the future Saint Terese of the Child Jesus entered in 1888 to follow a life of prayer.

In 1923 the chapel was expanded to house the remains of Terese, transferred from the cemetery. Terese is represented on her deathbed, dressed in the habit of Carmel.

Visit Lisieux Basilica, France

The basilica of Sainte-Thérèse is an important monument in the town of Lisieux, in the west of the Calvados department of Normandy.

Explore the Basilica Sainte-Thérèse in Lisieux

France This Way review: although it is of quite recent construction, the basilica of Sainte-Thérèse is an imposing church with impressive internal decoration and you will want to visit even if you are in the town as a tourist rather than a pilgrim

Who was Saint-Thérese?

Sainte-Thérèse was born in the town of Alençon in Normandy in 1873, and died at the young age of 24 in 1897. Her early life was quite difficult - her mother died when Thérèse was four years old, and she was then looked after by her older sisters until they became nuns and left home.

Saint-Thérèse herself became a carmelite nun in Lisieux in 1888, having travelled to Rome to get permission from the pope to enter the order at a younger age than was usually permitted.

She is best known for her writings, and several hundred million copies of her most important book called Story of a Soul have been sold in the world, teaching that we should live with kindness to others in all our actions and thoughts.

interior of Lisieux basilica

The basilica Sainte-Thérèse

The basilica was built on the edge of Lisieux in the first half of the 20th century, after Sainte-Thérèse had been made into a saint, in order to provide a centre for pilgrims who were attracted by the history of the saint.

The building is in an imposing position on the edge of the town centre, on a raised area from where it dominates the centre of Lisieux. This effect is emphasised by the open area and the series of large steps that lead to the entrance.

The outside of the basilica is in the neo-byzantine style, and also includes neo-romanesque elements. The facade has small towers either side, incorporates a row of seven statues, and has a triangular fronton above with a statue of Sainte-Thérèse.

Aspects of this style of architecture can also be seen in Perigueux cathedral , as well as the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre in Paris, which acted as inspiration for Lisieux basilica.

Side wings to each side of the facade and pierced with arches, each wing ending with an additional tower, further help to give the basilica a substantial appearance: these are the front of the cloisters of the basilica.

Inside, the basilica follows a traditional 'latin cross' design with a nave, transept and altar with a large dome above the transept.

The dome is supported on columns and windows inserted betweeen the columns, allowing more light to enter the interior of the basilica. It is possible to climb the 300 stairs to the inside of the dome for further impresive views of the mosaics and views of the exterior (the rest of the visit is free, but there is a small charge to climb the stairs).

The interior of the basilica Saint-Thérèse is very impressive, with mosaics in bright colours covering many of the surfaces including the half-dome above the apse and the interior of the main dome. The principal mosaic, above the apse, shows Christ with the Virgin Mary and a flock of sheep, and the other mosaics represent other characters and stories from the Bible.

The overall impression is of a very impressive basilica, filled with light and with numerous colourful mosaics, that are the highlight of your visit.

In the south transept of the basilica you can see a ciborium, a large structure built to hold the relics of Sainte-Thérèse and where part of the arm of the saint can be seen.

The crypt of the basilica is also impressive, with further mosaics and paintings on the ceiling and arches, and including more recent mosaics that depict evets from the life of Sainte-Thérèse. The shrine of Louis-Martin and Zélie Martin, the parents of Thérèse and both made saints in 2008, is also in the crypt.

In the footsteps of Eugène Boudin

Born in Honfleur, son of a sailor and an apprentice sailor himself in his youth, the pre-impressionist painter Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) was a great traveller. He sketched the Normandy beaches and rocks of Antibes, the Dutch ports and the Venetian Lagoon. As he made his way up the Touques valley, he worked on paintings of the churches of Touques and watercolours of the pastures of Pont-l’Évêque, but it was in Fervaques, with his friends Eugène and Stéphanie Jacquette, that he stayed most often between 1869 and 1897. Dr Eugene Jacquette (1828-1899) was an art collector from an old Fervaques family. In Fervaques, Eugène Boudin completed around twenty canvases as well as numerous drawings and watercolours. Follow in his footsteps on an eight-stop tour.

Embark on a 2-hour walking tour around the town centre of Lisieux, departing from the Tourist Office. This tour is an opportunity to discover or rediscover Lisieux’s rich heritage and history. The town’s first inhabitants or “Lexovians”, the Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse, the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, half-timbered houses, the town hall, the destruction of the town in 1944 and the post-war reconstruction… not to mention the history of the Count Bishops and the invention of the helicopter… Learn all about the town!

A stroll along the banks of the Touques

The Touques, the Cirieux, the Graindin, the Orbiquet: the town of Lisieux was built at the point where these four rivers meet. To showcase its natural heritage, the town of Lisieux wished to create a footpath along the river banks, allowing visitors to stroll from the north to the south of the town.  Throughout the route, information panels guide and inform walkers. The riverside trail highlights Lisieux’s remarkable environmental assets such as the exceptional quality of the water of the Touques and the diversity of flora and fauna in these natural areas.

An important market town since the 16th century and situated in the heart of a farming country, Livarot experienced an agro-industrial turning point in the second half of the 19th century, specialising in dairy, cheese and cider-making. With the arrival of the railway, Livarot, Pont-l’Évêque and Camembert cheeses were just a few hours from Paris! This route, which begins and ends at the Tourist Office, includes three cheese dairies, one of which is still working today. Go on to discover an old cheese box factory and its restored steam engine, an exceptional symbol of the Industrial Revolution. The route ends at the old butter exchange and cheese market square where, every Thursday, the local farmers came to sell their weekly production of Livarot to the cheesemakers and ripeners who sold it on.

The past meets the present in Orbec, a delightful town showcasing traditional stone, brick and timber framing. Along winding streets, blooming alleyways and meandering streams, this tour invites you to discover traditional Pays d’Auge half-timbered houses, private mansions as well as shops that breathe life into the main artery of the town, its unique and charming high street.

Day 1: Depart for Paris

Make your way to your local airport, where you will board your overnight flight(s). Your meals will be served on board.

Day 2: Paris - Lisieux (St. Therese - the Little Flower)

Upon arrival in Paris, collect your luggage from the baggage claims area and proceed to the arrival’s hall afterwards, where you will be greeted by your tour guide and driver. You will begin your pilgrimage by visiting and attending Mass at the magnificent, Sacre Coeur Basilica, that stands atop Montmartre Hill. The Basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was originally built in 1914, as an act of penance for the infidelity that France was experiencing during that time. While on your visit, in addition to the extraordinary artwork and architecture that forms the Basilica, you will see the beautiful mosaic of the Risen Christ, and the remarkable Grand Organ. Celebrate Mass at the Crypt that contains the Tombs of many notable Cardinals. Time permitting, you may have the opportunity during your free time to ascend a staircase to the Dome, where you will take in a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of Paris. Following this visit, you will enjoy lunch on own and depart for Lisieux. According to Pope Pius X, St. Therese of Lisieux was the “greatest saint of modern times.” Her extraordinary love for God, and service to humanity, will come alive as you walk in the great Saint’s footsteps. During your visit, you will see the beautiful Basilica of St. Therese, and the magnificent mosaics and stained glass that are contained within. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Lisieux.

Day 3: Lisieux - Landing Beaches - American Cemetery

Upon waking up in Lisieux and enjoying breakfast, you will pray and reflect upon the life of the beloved Saint and celebrate Mass. After Mass and following the visit to the Basilica, you will have the opportunity to view relics, clothing and personal objects of St. Therese, when you visit her family home, Les Buissonets. Additionally, you will tour the Carmelite Convent, where she entered in 1888, and is currently entombed in with her parents. This afternoon, you will transfer to Normandy Landing beaches. The Normandy landings were the landing operations that took place on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 (termed D-Day) by the Allies of Normandy, during World War II. As the largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the liberation of German occupied Northwestern Europe from Nazi control, and contributed to the Allies’ victory on the Western Front. Continue on to visit The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, a World War II cemetery and memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, honoring the American troops that died in Europe during World War II. Many of the brave American soldiers of World War II are buried here, and it is encouraged to say a prayer in thanksgiving for their courage. Return to Lisieux for dinner and an overnight.

Day 4: Lisieux - Chartres - Paris

This morning, your day begins with an early breakfast, before we depart for Chartres, known worldwide for its massive Cathedral Notre Dame, and its incredible stained-glass windows from the 12th and 13th century. The World Heritage site, UNESCO, calls the Cathedral “the high point of French Gothic art” and a “masterpiece”. You will have some free time for lunch in the quaint town of Chartres. After lunch, we will continue to Paris for check in at your hotel, followed by some free time before a delicious dinner and an overnight.

Day 5: Paris - Miraculous Medal – Notre Dame Cathedral (outside)

Today, you will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Paris. We start with Our Lady of Miraculous Medal, where we celebrate Mass, after which we will have to opportunity to view the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Laboure. The Saint’s guardian angel led her to the chapel, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her. During apparitions, Our Lady repeatedly instructed the making and purpose of the Miraculous Medal, as well as the green scapular. According to the Blessed Virgin Mary, those who wear the Miraculous Medal and scapular will receive special protection and abundant graces. Following your prayerful and reflective experience, we will walk to Saint Vincent de Paul Church, than continue on tour of Paris. Our panoramic tour, will take us to the most recognizable symbol of the city of Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, Invalides, the L’Arch de Triomphe and the Champ-Elysees, one of the world’s most famous boulevards. We will make a stop at La Madeleine, with the statue of Mary Magdalene carried to heaven by angels. Your busy day ends with a lovely meal and a comfortable overnight.

Days 6 & 7: Free time in Paris

Over the next two days, you will have the opportunity to explore Paris and its surrounding areas at your own arrangements. Throughout this time, feel free to take optional tours to Versailles or Chartres, spend time strolling along the Seine or find little cafes to soak up the Parisian atmosphere.

*Please be advised that there will not be a Spiritual Director nor Tour Escort with you the last two nights in Paris.
