I Love Hue review - A more complex than usual colour matching puzzler

I Love Hue is a visual puzzle game. It's the sort of thing that, if you're colour blind, you're not going to have even the slightest chance with. But if you're not, it's worth a look.

And looking is pretty much all it entails. There's no particular dextrous skill required here. You're just sliding blocks around a grid.

The twist comes from the colour of each block. You need to make a line of hues that connect two sides of the grid. And while things might start off sedate, it doesn't take long to sink its challenge claws deep.

Blue dabadi The game starts you off with a group of colours. Then it shuffles some of them around. If there's a dot in the middle it's fixed, if not you can swipe them around.

The aim is to put everything back in the right order. And to start off with it's reasonably simple, because you've only got a handful of lines to concentrate on.

But then things get trickier. You've got intersections of hues to think about, and the colours you're swizzling get more alike.

You might not be testing your reactions, but there's still a level of tension here. And sometimes that can boil over into frustration. Which isn't exactly ideal.

Things get hard pretty darn quickly as well. But nothing really changes from puzzle to puzzle, just the shape of the grid that you're trying to rearrange.

And that means that, unless you really like colours, it's unlikely that this one is going to grab you in any meaningful way.

There's nothing wrong with I Love Hue . It does everything that it sets out to do with skill, and it's pretty damn well put together as well.

It just loses its sparkle after a few rounds. Dedicated puzzlers with an affinity for colour will lap it up, but the rest of us might be left wondering what all the fuss is about.

I’m addicted to ‘I Love Hue,’ the most soothing smartphone game I’ve ever played

That's something awfully satisfying about putting things in order by color.

This may not be the case for everyone. But when things are arranged by color, I feel organized and relaxed. My closet and even my smartphone apps are almost always arranged that way.

So when I stumbled upon " I Love Hue ," I knew I was about to be hooked.

The smartphone game — which is available for iOS and Android devices — has a super-simple premise: Choose a puzzle and arrange the blocks by color and shade.

I've been playing "I Love Hue" non-stop for the past 36 hours — I even have a game going on two separate devices at this point — and can safely say it's my new favorite app.

Here's how to play:

There is only one rule you need to worry about in "I Love Hue:" Everything needs to be in color order.

The game presents you with several different puzzles made up of blocks in a range of colors. When you start a puzzle, the blocks will be scrambled and your job is to put everything back in order in as few moves as possible.

The game has a distinct, New-Age tone to it: When you succeed, it will give you a compliment like, "You're an iridescent moonbeam!" and the various levels are named Mystic, Prophet, Guru, and so on. While a little odd at first, I eventually found the magical language comforting. Plus, the name of the game itself is pretty cute.

One important thing to note: "I Love Hue" is entirely based on color, so if you have trouble discerning between two very similar colors or have color blindness, this is not the game for you.

When you first start a puzzle, everything will be in color order for a brief second before the game scrambles it. The squares with black dots in the center are immobile and help you figure out the order the blocks should go in.

Once things get scrambled, you have an unlimited amount of time to put the puzzle back in order. To move a block, just place your finger on it and drag it where you want it to go. Once the puzzle starts to come together, it gets easier.

When you finish, you're rewarded with this glowing heart.

There's always one satisfying moment when you can see your finished puzzle. Then, it all dissolves.

In the beginner stage, you'll have to complete 10 puzzles before you can move on. the great thing about the first stage is that it's completely free and there are no ads..

When you get to the second stage, the game will start showing you how you stack up against other players. This can be gratifying if you complete the level in fewer moves than the average.

The second stage is when you'll start seeing ads between puzzles, but you can pay to remove them altogether. There's also the option to pay for more gems, which lets you play more complicated puzzles.

Here's a hard puzzle from the second stage. As the game goes on, the colors will have less in common, or there will be fewer fixed blocks to help you figure out the right order.

But "I Love Hue" isn't stressful. There are no "lives" and you can move the blocks as many times as you want. Trust me: You'll be relaxed in no time.

How to Play

Organize the color palettes into the same order they were in during the level preview of each level.

Click the start button at the bottom of the game’s welcome screen.
Initially only the first level is unlocked.
Locked levels have a lock symbol on them. You can unlock each of the 50 levels by beating all prior levels.
You can go back and replay previously beat levels. Beat levels have a white checkmark in a pink circle on them.
If you want to erase your progress you can delete the game cookie or play the game on a different computer or on a different web browser on the same computer.
Use your mouse left click button to select a tile and switch it with another tile.
Repeat the process until all tiles are in order.
Touch the screen with your finger to use your finger like a mouse.
The bottom of the playing field contains 3 buttons: menu, sound control, and restart level.
As you advance through the levels they include more tiles in them & more tiles are moved.
Level 1 contains 32 tiles in a 4×8 grid with 24 tiles correctly positioned and 8 tiles repositioned.
Level 10 contains 45 tiles in a 5×9 grid with 13 tiles correctly positioned and 32 tiles repositioned.
The tiles are removed from top to bottom in a left to right pattern, so it is easier to track patterns lower on the screen as they appear longer.
You can write down the general trends of columns and rows on a piece of paper or in a Word file.
You can use screenshot software to take a screenshot of the level as it first loads to help you solve it.
You get an unlimited number of moves, but some puzzles can be hard to solve even with an unlimited number of moves.
If there is a row or column which is still complete or mostly complete after the tiles have been shuffled use that as an example to guide your play with other tiles.
Try to work on one row or column at a time to get it in order and then work on the next.
The game is suited for colorful people & logic puzzle fans of all ages.
The game has no adult themed content.

I've waxed poetic about how much I love the Luka duffel for weekend trips and as my go-personal item on flights. And yes, it deserves every bit of hype. It's that perfect in-between size: small enough to comfortably carry when full and fit under the seat on airplanes, but large enough to hold enough clothes for a full weekend trip. There's much to love about this duffel, but its ultra-soft and easy-to-clean material make it stand out. Even when it's full, the top carry handle feels soft on my shoulder. And if you've really packed it, there's also a long adjustable strap that can be worn as a crossbody to better distribute the weight. After traveling, I always give it a quick cleaning with a disinfecting wipe and it looks good as new. There's a zippered compartment on the exterior for essentials like your wallet and phone, and a water bottle pocket. Inside, you'll find a spacious main section, multiple pockets (including a mesh one), and a zippered compartment. Another one of my favorite features: the separate shoe compartment that holds an extra pair of sneakers or slippers (a complete game-changer when packing for weekend trips).

What we love most : It fits more than the average weekender.

Calpak launched its best-selling Luka duffel in a larger version—overpackers, this one's for you. While it's a little too big to fit under an airplane seat as a personal item, it's a perfect size for trips longer than two days (think extended weekends or shorter vacations). It's made of the same soft, puffer-like material as the original version and features the same long adjustable strap, top carry handle, and hidden shoe compartment. If you often take weekend trips or short getaways, a larger duffel bag will come in handy. While the original version fits two days' worth of clothes, I'm able to fit a lot more in the larger version—usually three to four days' worth of clothes (maybe even five if you're a light packer).
