Canadian Rockies: National Parks Westbound

Its a great tour! You see the most beautiful places and everything is so well organised. The camping part is easy to do, even for people like me who never go camping. Enjoyed every second of it!!

Canadian Rockies: National Parks Eastbound Tour

  • Mountain Hikes

Canadian Rockies: National Parks Eastbound

Hiking, waterfalls, stunning scenery, mountains, emerald lakes, glaciers, wildlife and a brilliant guide and tour group. This was a fast paced, but fantastic tour that I would highly recommend. I will definitely be going back to West Canada

It was so great to visit the highlights of the Rockies in 4 days. Even though the weather was a little bit bad, we saw a lot of nice scenery!!!

Canadian Rockies Tour

Canadian Rockies

I would definitely recommend this trip. The scenery was amazing, the most beautiful places were on the itinerary. Our guide Duffy was brilliant he definitely helped make the trip so special.

Caribou Tour

Great tour with amazing sights and wildlife; however, be aware of a lot of driving the first two days on the way to banff and on the last two days back to Vancouver. Furthermore the itinerary should be updated as there where some changes as to the description.

Rockies Premium Tour from Vancouver (34 Seats) Tour

Rockies Premium Tour from Vancouver (34 Seats)

The itinerary was very structured and organised. Got to see many spectacular sights of the Rockies. Had an amazing time with the group (just a nice size) and we got to go to Banff, Jasper, saw many waterfalls and mountain ranges. Enjoyed myself thoroughly. Thank you to Luke for being such a cool, chill and wonderful tour guide throughout the trip! He really made sure we all had a great time, single-handedly driving us long distances to the different destinations and also helping out with our luggages. He also recommended us great sights to see and provided insights on some of the history of the Rockies and tidbits about the stuff we saw in our tour.

Rockies Classic Summer Tour Tour

Appreciate that there was a lot of ground to cover and things to see but felt it was a bit rushed. The last day was a bit disappointing as we did not have much time in Jasper and the hotel that we stayed in was in the middle of nowhere. The breakfast was not up to standard, paper plates and plastic knives and forks was unacceptable. The two previous hotels were in good locations.

Top notch treatment. Very accommodating. Meals were very good to excellent. Gave us some options when a few excursions were rained out. Guide took time to get to know you on a personal level.

Via Railway Experience|5-Day Vancouver to Rockies Railway Full Experience Tour Departure

Overall it was a very good experience. The tour is organized and the entire team were nice and helpful. The tour was great in the sense that you get to see a lot in a few days which is great. You also get explanation and details of every spot. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in discovering the Rocky Mountains. The only thing I would change is to exclude the Vancouver part, if you are going from TO I advise to go strait to Calgary and start the tour from there. We did the 5 days excursion from TO to Vancouver then to Jasper, Banff …Calgary. And we had a flight delay going to Vancouver of 2 days so arrived on the same day we had to head to Jasper and that was very exhausting. In conclusion, it’s a great tour to consider and totally worth it :)

7 Day Rocky Mountain Camping Adventure Tour

7 Day Rocky Mountain Camping Adventure

I really enjoyed my hiking trip in the Canadian Rockies. Our guides Marianne and Catherine did a fantastic job with the execution of the trip. The food, getting us going in the morning and sticking to the plan allowed everyone to have a great time! I highly recommend this hiking itinerary. The only thing that I would address is the location of the camp sites. One camp site had a generator on 24 hours a day and another had a train track very close to our camp site and both sites kept me awake at night. Quite frankly my personal residence that sits in a urban area is MUCH more quiet than anything I experienced while camping.

What people love about West Coast Canada Tours

This trip was the best experience of my life so far! My CEO Melanie was so amazing, I felt so at ease and happy throughout every step of the tour. This is the perfect trip to see some of Canada. 100000/10 would recommend to everyone!
I only wished it lasted longer
I have a great time! Ben is our tour guide, he’s such a great fun, knowledgeable, friendly person. He made sure everyone comfortable, safe, and ready to answer any questions we have during the tour. I did group tour before, I can tell Ben is one of the best.

Jasper national park, alberta, in the heart of alberta's wilderness... jasper national park.

Home to some of the most breathtaking wilderness in the Canadian Rockies – waterfalls, canyons, crystal lakes and stunning mountain peaks – Canada's Jasper National Park in Alberta has been designated by UNESCO as one of the most significant natural locations on the planet… and with Tauck, you'll stay two nights in the heart of it at a wilderness lodge.

Lake Louise, Alberta

Lake louise... an emerald gem in banff national park.

A strikingly photogenic, emerald-colored lake in Alberta's Banff National Park, shimmering Lake Louise is surrounded by dense forests, soaring mountain peaks, and majestic Victoria Glacier. Built in the 1890s to attract wealthy travelers to the Canadian Rockies, the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise along her shores is recognized globally for an enduring tradition of hospitality excellence along with progressive environmental stewardship and responsible tourism. Endless outdoor recreational activities including hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking and river rafting.

Banff National Park, Alberta

The treasures of canada's first national park.

Canada's oldest national park, established in the 1880s, Banff National Park embraces the emerald waters of Lake Louise, the jagged snow-capped peaks along the Icefields Parkway and postcard-perfect mountain settings, which you'll explore from your historic "Castle in the Rockies," Fairmont Banff Springs. One of Canada's first great railway hotels, this grand resort, styled after a Scottish baronial castle, first opened in 1888 as one of the world's most luxurious mountain getaways – and remains an enduring symbol of Canadian hospitality.

  • The West Coast of Canada has the warmest climate in the country - the flowers start blooming as early as February. It’s the retirement capital of the country, making it an ideal vacation spot for seniors looking for mild weather and accessible activities.
  • The province of B.C. is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, six National Parks and over 400 provincial parks and recreation areas.
  • Half of British Columbia's 4.6 million people live in the metropolitan area of Vancouver. This means the rest of the province is quiet, peaceful and relatively unpopulated.
  • Locals joking refer to the West Coast as the “Wet Coast.” It is home to Canada’s rainiest city, Prince Rupert, which can get more than 100 inches of rainfall a year.
  • The narrow passage between Vancouver Island and the rest of Canada is known for being one of the best places in the world to spot killer whales. So, if you take the ferry to the island be sure to sit on the outdoor deck and have your camera ready!

#1 Travel tip: Don't miss the flowers

Western Canada has stunning horticultural gardens, such as Butchart Gardens in Victoria and Van Duesen Gardens in Vancouver. With the area's mild climate, you'll find stunning flora most times of the year.

Blog Author - Athena McKenzie

  • Everything is a bit more relaxed here. Whether it's the mild weather or the calming sound of the ocean waves, the West Coast is more laid-back than the rest of Canada. If you want a break from the hectic pace of city life, sit for a while in a cafe in a place like Victoria or further west in Tofino. You'll notice soon enough that no one is in a hurry.
  • The cuisine is fresh, varied and mouthwatering. Authentic sushi from the streets of Vancouver. Wild Pacific Salmon baked on a cedar plank. Homemade goat cheese from Salt Spring Island. You'll find a plethora of delicious things to eat on the West Coast. If you visit Vancouver Island, be sure to try the Nanaimo Bar — an irresistible dessert square made with a graham cracker coconut base, a creamy custard middle and a layer of chocolate on top.
  • You'll learn about First Nations culture. B.C. is home to approximately 230,000 indigenous people from 203 different First Nations. From the totem poles displayed proudly in city parks to the many excellent interactive museums of the region, there are many opportunities to learn about the indigenous communities who have lived on the West Coast for thousands of years.
  • How about that weather? Why do so many Canadians dream of retiring to the West Coast? It's because the weather here is so much milder and more pleasant than the extreme winter freeze of the Prairie and Eastern provinces. While Albertans and Ontarians are snow-shoveling a path from their door to their car, Vancouver Islanders are taunting them with photos of cherry blossoms in February and enjoying the warm sea breezes.
  • West Coasters will greet you with warmth. The people on the West Coast are notoriously laid back and friendly. You'll meet plenty of people who will welcome you with a warm smile — and then you're only a short conversation away from making a new friend.

Six colourful totem poles in Stanley Park, Vancouver

#2 Travel tip: Pack layers

A trick for dealing with the West Coast's variable weather is to bring layers. Pack lighter t-shirts, a fleece jacket and a waterproof coat. A woolen hat can come in handy any time of the year, with temperatures dropping at night.

You could spend months exploring all of the nooks and crannies of Canada's West Coast and still not see it all. There are just so many tiny islands, remote inlets, far-flung communities and friendly towns to explore. To get you started on planning your train vacations to the West Coast, here are a few of our favourite spots:

Vancouver

Vibrant and cosmopolitan Vancouver often tops lists of the world's "Best Places to Live." The attributes that make it delightfully liveable, such as walkable neighbourhoods, close access to nature and superb international dining, also make it very enjoyable to visit. Plus, the view of the snow-dusted mountains on the horizon never gets old.

When to go : Visit during the pleasant spring months, when the city's flower gardens and parks are in full bloom.

Train you'll ride on :  VIA Rail Canadian

The highlight : Take a walk through the sprawling green Stanley Park and admire the ocean from the scenic seawall.

Aerial view of Vancouver city with boats in the water and mountains behind

Whistler

Home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in North America, Whistler is an alpine wonderland named after the whistling call of the furry marmot. The summer offers just as many fun activities for mountain fun. Take to the trails and enjoy a selection of scenic hikes, try an alpine picnic, ride the gondola, indulge in a Nordic Spa or try zip-lining. More extreme sports include mountain biking

When to go : While winter is the classic time, summer is a splendid time to explore.

Train you'll ride on : The Rocky Mountaineer (in the winter, an excursion to Whistler can be added to any of trips that start or end in Vancouver, but you will not travel by train to Whistler)

The highlight : Add an evening foodie tour of Whistler's excellent culinary scene to your trip.

Campbell River

Known as the "Salmon Fishing Capital of the World,' Campbell River is one of the quirky small communities that are the beating heart of the West Coast. Take a 30-minute flight from Campbell River to Knight Inlet Lodge, where you'll have the unforgettable experience of spotting grizzly bears in the wild.

When to go : September is the prime month for viewing grizzly bears, and it's also a great time to beat the summer crowds.

How to go : An excursion to Campbell River and Knight Inlet can be added to most of our itineraries out of Vancouver.

The highlight : Flying into the remote and unspoiled Knight Inlet, where bear viewing groups are limited to only 12 people at a time.

A grizzly bear stands in a shallow river at Knight Inlet with a seagull behind

Tofino

Secluded on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino, a small coastal village of about 1,600 residents, is one of Canada's secret gems. At Tofino's doorstep is the Clayoquot Sound region, a world UNESCO biosphere reserve. This Canadian area boasts one of British Columbia's most cherished nature reserves, the Pacific Rim National Park.

Rugged coastlines and lush temperate rainforests offer a feast of natural Canadian exquisiteness for the nature lover on your Canadian train trip.

When to go : Tofino's untamed beauty make it a popular destination during the summer months. Alternatively, visit in March, when thousands of grey whales migrate to the Sound in Canada and kick off the annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival.

How to go : An excursion to Tofino can be added to most of our itineraries out of Vancouver. You can fly in on a small charter plane or we can arrange a self-drive component to your trip.

The highlight : Choose from a range of outdoor experiences: surfing, whale watching, hiking and more.

Aerial view of sandy beaches, rugged coastline and rainforests in Clayoquot Sound

Victoria

British Columbia's capital city, Victoria, lies on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and has a temperate coastal climate year-round. Surrounded by rugged west coast wilderness, the city is full of lush green spaces and fascinating historic buildings.

Explore Canada's oldest Chinatown, enjoy an elegant afternoon tea, go on a whale watching tour, kayak across the Inner Harbour, and take in the city's unique ambience of old-world blended with the new.

When to go : The spring months mark the beginning of the whale watching season and are the ideal time to discover Victoria's flowering parks and gardens.

How to go : An excursion to Victoria can be added to most of our itineraries out of Vancouver. You can travel by float plane or on an escorted tour.

The highlight : Stroll through the world-renowned Butchart Gardens, home to 900 plant varieties across 55 acres.

1 – Accommodation:

Choosing the right tour is crucial, especially if you’re looking to visit all the must-see destinations and have ample time to explore. We recommend joining a tour that provides accommodations within Banff and Jasper National Parks. Our selected hotels are centrally located in Banff and Jasper, ensuring that you’re right in the heart of these stunning locations.

2 – Transportation:

Tours of the Canadian Rockies often require long, sometimes winding, steep, and bumpy drives. To ensure your comfort, Key West Travel utilizes spacious highway coaches with 55 seats. You can look forward to comfortable reclining seats, panoramic windows, and onboard washroom facilities, luxuries that are not typically available on smaller coaches.

3 – Tour Director:

When selecting a tour package, it’s important to consider the intended audience, as this can give you an idea of who your fellow travelers will be and what kind of experience to anticipate. Our tours are primarily designed for individuals aged 30 and above, offering an opportunity to explore the Rockies thoroughly in the company of a more mature group. However, we also warmly welcome families and students, creating a diverse and relaxed environment for all who wish to join.

4 – Itinerary/Activities:

Our strategically situated hotels on the tour itinerary ensure that guests don’t miss out on any of the Canadian Rockies’ highlights. Additionally, we provide a selection of optional activities for those seeking extra adventure at an additional cost. For guests preferring a more relaxed experience, complimentary activities are readily available as well.

Our tours are exclusively conducted in English by a seasoned tour director boasting over a decade of professional experience!

Demand for Canadian vacations in 2024 is exceptionally high due to pent-up interest. We strongly recommend securing your seats early to ensure you get your preferred date and avoid the possibility of hotel downgrades.

Key West Travel does not offer individual pick-ups as our tour guests would like to depart Vancouver as scheduled. Usually, the tour departs from Hyatt Regency Downtown Vancouver (655 Burrard Street).

Standard accommodations in our packages offer mountain lodge-style hotels, renowned for their cleanliness and comfort, providing guests with private rooms and en-suite washrooms. For those seeking an even more luxurious experience, our premium accommodations are resort-style hotels that tend to sell out fast. We advise booking premium options well in advance, as they often become unavailable six months prior to departure.

Gratuities are not included in our prices, unless otherwise indicated. While we do not dictate the amount you should offer as a tip, it is customary in Canada to provide gratuities as a token of appreciation for excellent service

The duration on the bus varies depending on the itinerary. On travel days between Vancouver and Jasper or Banff, you can expect a minimum of 10 hours on the bus. To ensure your comfort, we schedule mini breaks every 2-3 hours. On days dedicated to sightseeing, the time spent on the bus will be minimal, as most of the day will be occupied with walking, sightseeing, hiking, and other activities.

West Coast Canada Travel Guide – Our Best Tips for a Transformational Trip

Some of our best and most memorable travel experiences have been on Canada’s West Coast. Read this post for all the West Coast Canada travel advice we’ve learned through our many years of living in and exploring this little slice of heaven!

West Coast Canada Quick Facts

Best places to visit on canada’s west coast, how long do you need on the west coast, best time to visit, cost of travel in bc, accommodation, food & drink, responsible travel on the west coast, packing list for bc’s west coast, is it safe to travel in canada, how to get around on the west coast, more posts about the west coast, a final note about visiting canada’s west coast.

Is there any place more beautiful than Canada’s West Coast?

If there is, I’ve never seen it.

I may be (slightly) biased, having spent my teens and 20s in Victoria and Vancouver before leaving for a life of global travel. Each time I return, my eyes hungrily gobble up the white peaks of the Coast Mountains, the haunting blue of the wild ocean, and the dense forests of evergreen trees.

Canada’s West Coast is the ideal destination for immersing in nature and getting active in the great outdoors. But it’s also great for history and culture , with much to absorb about the distinct cultures of the Indigenous people of the region , who have inhabited the area for thousands of years.

If it’s an exploration of local food and drink you’re after, West Coast cuisine won’t disappoint. It tends towards the fresh and light, drawing from a wide variety of local organic ingredients.

The food pairs perfectly with a craft beer or cider from one of the West Coast’s hundreds of breweries, or a bottle of crisp white wine from one of the regions many fine wineries.

Stephen and I have had so many transformational travel moments on the West Coast of Canada, we can’t wait to share them with you.

So if you’re planning a trip to BC’s West Coast, let’s jump in… you’re going to love it.

It’s no secret that Vancouver is one of our favourite cities in the world!

On a sunny day, it is also one of the most beautiful. Wherever you go in the city, you’ll almost surely have a view of the snow-capped Coast Mountains or the inlets and harbours that make up Vancouver’s coastline. More often than not, you can see both at once.

Though Vancouver has plenty to offer for all kinds of travellers, our favourite activities here usually happen in the great outdoors.

While in Vancouver you can:

  • Cycle the city’s many safe and accessible bike paths
  • Kayak the Burrard Inlet
  • Take a half-day bike tour
  • People-watch and shop for local goods on Granville Island
  • Hike or snowshoe in the spectacular provincial parks
  • Go on a craft beer crawl in Vancouver’s East End
  • Try nude sunbathing at Wreck Beach
  • Catch a Shakespeare play at Bard on the Beach

Our Vancouver posts will give you more ideas and help you plan your Vancouver itinerary.

For skiers from around the world, a visit to Whistler Blackcomb during the ski season is at the top of many bucket lists. But even if you’re not into skiing, or are visiting in summer, the resort, just a few hour’s drive from Vancouver, is like an outdoor playground .

Summer visitors have hundreds of hiking trails to choose from and there’s also mountain biking, zip lining, bear viewing, lakes and beaches, and plenty more. Whistler also has a wide range of spas and resorts, so if what you really need is some deep relaxation, you’ll find it there.

The Gulf Islands

A smattering of tiny islands that lie between BC’s West Coast and Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands have their own unique vibe.

Island life is a laid-back affair. Many Gulf Islanders earn their living creating art, writing books, or producing artisanal products . Others spend their days tending to small organic farms and orchards, or tending to the tourists who come to find their own sense of peace.

The Southern Gulf Islands are easily accessible by ferry from Victoria or Vancouver. The northern islands are a little harder to reach but deliver ample rewards to those of us who enjoy windswept beaches seemingly on the edge of the world.

In summer, the Gulf Islands offer up amazing opportunities for camping, kayaking, hiking, swimming, boating, and just enjoying the great outdoors.

If you go in spring, fall, or even winter, there’s still plenty to do, like shopping for local goods, relaxing in the spa, sampling the islands’ locally crafted beer and wine, or sitting fireside and sipping a cocktail!

Don’t miss our guide to transformational things to do on the Gulf Islands for more ideas. You can use our Gulf Islands accommodation guide to find the best places to stay.

The Sunshine Coast

Another groovy laid-back region just an hour from Vancouver, The Sunshine Coast is BC’s secret hideaway . Though it’s technically on the mainland, the only access to The Sunshine Coast is by ferry from Horseshoe Bay, on the edge of West Vancouver.

kayaks in desolation sound

Whether you’re visiting in winter, summer, or somewhere in between, the Sunshine Coast gives you easy access to a slice of all the best things about BC — incredible nature, great food, tremendous craft beer , and the famous friendly Canadian culture!

We spent two weeks cycling The Sunshine Coast last year and wrote extensively about it. These posts will help you plan a transformational trip:

Vancouver Island

Last summer, as part of our big BC bike trip, Stephen and I spent 6 weeks cycling Vancouver Island. We also lived there for a whole year in 2015 and I went to university in Victoria, on the southern tip of the island.

Suffice it to say, I have spent a lot of time exploring the West Coast’s big island . (Just for reference, Vancouver Island is about the same size as Taiwan or Belgium, but far less populous).

The most popular stop on Vancouver Island is the city of Victoria, BC’s capital. That’s why so many people mistakenly call it Victoria Island. There are week’s worth of attractions to explore in and around Victoria.

woman looking out over a lake

But we recommend saving some time to head north, or you’ll miss out on so much!

Make a stop in the fertile Cowichan Valley, where all of Vancouver Island’s wine and much of its food is produced . A little further north, you’ll get to the small cities of Chemainus, Ladysmith, Nanaimo, and Parksville, each offering their own unique flavours.

While in Nanaimo, make time for a whale watching tour !

Heading further north still, stop off to sample the craft beer scene in Courtney and Comox or, in winter, head to Mount Washington to ski .

Tofino is a tourist hotspot on Vancouver Island, attracting surfers from around the world. The north island is less visited but perfect for those who want to get away from people and spend some time alone in nature. The north island offers plenty of opportunities for boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Haida Gwaii

From Port Hardy on the north part of the island, you can take an overnight ferry to the remote archipelago of Haida Gwaii. This small string of islands is remote enough that we’ve not yet had a chance to visit!

Haida Gwaii is home to the Haida people and here you’ll find true wilderness – towering forests, isolated beaches, and abundant wildlife. It’s also the ideal place to learn about the history and modern struggles of the first people to inhabit these lands.

If you read the previous section, you’ll know that Canada’s West Coast is such a diverse region that it would take months and months to explore it properly. Unless you have all the time in the world, our suggested itineraries below will help you plan your BC trip.

4 or 5 days

With only a handful of days to explore, choose one of these options:

  • Stay in Vancouver and spend at least one day in the nearby mountains.
  • Stay in Victoria and plan for day trips from there.
  • Stay in Whistler and ski or explore summertime activities.

7 to 10 days

With a week to 10 days, choose one of these options:

  • Visit Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.
  • Visit Victoria and the Gulf Islands.
  • Do a Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast loop, starting and ending in Vancouver.
  • Visit Victoria and then head north on Vancouver Island to Tofino, stopping in some of the smaller communities along the way.

2 weeks or more

With 2 weeks or more, you can take a little more time with one of the suggested itineraries above. Or do one of these:

  • Visit Vancouver, Victoria, and The Gulf Islands.
  • Visit Vancouver, Whistler, and The Sunshine Coast.
  • Explore Vancouver Island from bottom to top.
  • Visit Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.

Hiking the Howe Sound Crest Trail.

Unlike much of Canada, the West Coast of BC has a temperate climate, so you won’t have much bitter cold to contend with, even mid-winter. However, it’s no secret that BC gets a lot of rain. So, no matter what time of year you’re travelling, pack a good raincoat, an umbrella and some waterproof shoes.

And if you plan on camping, then yes, you do need that extra tarp!

For outdoor enthusiasts, there’s no doubt that you’ll find the best adventuring weather during July and August.

June and September can also be dry and warm.

During Spring (April and May) and Fall (September to October) the weather gets a little cooler, mist creeps in, and the rain starts to fall. Prices fall as well, so if you like your nature to deliver a bit of drama, this can be the ideal time for your West Coast trip.

Skiers and snowshoers will want to visit from November to February. The best skiing is usually had in January and February – but Mother Nature doesn’t follow a set schedule.

Winter can also be a great time to enjoy the varied culture, food, and wine the West Coast has to offer, without feeling pressure to go hiking or kayaking every day!

When it comes to travel budgets, Canada is a mid-range destination. It’s not as cheap as Southeast Asia and not as expensive as Western Europe or the US.

Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, and Tofino are more expensive than other areas of BC, so the more time you spend in these popular destinations, the more money you will need.

Here are some sample costs so you know what to expect.

Mid-range budget for BC’s West Coast

Prices are in Canadian dollars!

For a mid-range budget expect to spend around $150–250 per person per day.

  • $100–200/room/night – clean accommodation in a hotel or B&B
  • $40/person/day – meals in cafes or inexpensive restaurants
  • $6–10 – glass of craft beer
  • $8–12 – craft cocktail
  • $17 – one-way ferry ticket, Victoria to Vancouver, walk on
  • $60 – one-way ferry ticket, Vancouver to Victoria, car plus driver
  • $70/day – car rental
  • $150 – half day whale watching
  • $85 – half day kayak tour

Shoestring budget for BC’s West Coast

If you’re on a smaller budget , you’ll be able to enjoy the West Coast on around $50–75 per person per day .

  • $60/hostel bed/night – hostels in BC range widely from cute and comfy to quite dingy
  • $0/campsite/night – camping in a forestry campground
  • $20/campsite/night – tent camping in BC Parks campground
  • $30/person/day – meals at cafes and grocery stores
  • $4 – can of lager
  • $3 – bus or transit ticket
  • $17 – one-way ferry ticket, Vancouver to Victoria, walk on

Don’t forget to also include your plane ticket and travel insurance costs when working out your budget!

Woodstone Manor on saltspring island

There is a wide range of accommodation in BC, from f ree campsites with pit toilets to 5-star luxury resorts nestled in the wilderness. Standard hotels tend to be quite expensive, so we prefer to stay in B&Bs, which are a friendly alternative. Airbnb is also a great source for less pricey accommodation in BC.

Prices for accommodation can vary depending on the season — summer is most expensive on the coast, winter is most expensive in the mountains. Cost also varies dramatically by location — you’ll pay more for hotels in Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, and Tofino than in other destinations.

Some of the best camping in the world can be had in BC, so if you’re a fan of the great outdoors and not afraid of a little rain, plan to camp!

There is plenty of RV-friendly camping around but to get off the beaten track, pack your tent instead. That way you can take advantage of the free forestry campgrounds (especially plentiful on Vancouver Island) which tend to be at the end of dirt or gravel roads.

view from inside a tent overlooking the ocean

Of course, there are lots of fully serviced provincial campgrounds right off the highway, if your vehicle can’t take the back roads.

Be aware that in summer, especially on weekends, campgrounds tend to fill up, so make a reservation if you plan to camp during busy times .

We wrote a complete guide to camping on Vancouver Island and a guide to our favourite campgrounds on Vancouver Island . Make sure to read those before you go!

If you’ve done any hosteling in Europe or Southeast Asia, you may be used to a better quality of hostel than you’ll find in BC. While I’ll happily hostel when travelling solo on other continents, in the Pacific Northwest, I tend to skip hostels and look for a B&B instead.

Hostels on the Pacific coast tend to be cheap and cheerful. Welcoming, for sure, but the buildings and the beds are often of the old and creaky variety.

Most hostels are aimed at the very young backpacker crowd, or the Jack Kerouac types, so if you are a little beyond that stage in life, they may not be your best option.

One of the most prevalent forms of accommodation in BC are B&Bs. In small towns and on islands, homeowners make their living or add to their incomes by opening their homes to tourists.

The B&Bs I’ve stayed in on the West Coast have been homey, cozy, and tremendously welcoming. In the best ones, it really is like staying with an old friend. Breakfasts are often sumptuous affairs that include local produce and baking.

breakfast tray with fruit and tea

If you’re travelling in BC on a mid-range budget and want to experience the warmth of a Canadian home, I highly recommend you look for a B&B.

For a slightly cheaper option, search Airbnb, where you’ll find nice rooms in friendly homes but breakfast is not usually included.

Most hotels in BC’s cities are run by the big hotel chains and range from basic accommodation to luxury indulgence. Hotels in the province, especially in the south, don’t come cheap — $100/night is at the low end.

In smaller centres, boutique and family run hotels are more common. You’ll even find a few motels if you want the convenience of parking right outside your room!

Unique Accommodations

Coastal BC has a good selection of unique accommodations that defy categorization altogether.

camping tent with blue chairs outside

Take, for example, Tzoonie Wilderness Resort outside Sechelt, where we stayed last summer. This rustic resort is only accessible by boat and is a magical, mystical place that we will never forget.

We also did some geodesic glamping on the Sunshine Coast at Backeddy Resort & Marina and a yurt in Pender Harbor. On the Gulf Islands, stay in a luxe airstream or cabin at Woods on Pender .

Eco-Luxury Resorts

There are some astonishingly beautiful resorts and eco lodges in equally beautiful settings on BC’s West Coast.

Nimmo Bay Resort is tucked away in the Great Bear Rainforest and accessible only by helicopter or float plane. Clayoquot Wilderness Resort , on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, is not far from Tofino. In and around Whistler, you’ll find plenty of chi chi resorts to choose from.

Of course, this eco-luxury in the wilderness is only accessible to those who have a hefty travel budget . So if you’re looking to splash out, BC’s unique resorts will deliver a unique experience with lots of opportunity for transformation.

Canadian West Coasters tend to be a laid back bunch, not standing on ceremony or putting on airs. West Coast cuisine matches this attitude perfectly.

The best meals are often found in casual restaurants or cafes, where the quality of the food takes precedence over the table settings. It is usually food designed to fill a belly that has worked up an appetite in the great outdoors.

west coast cuisine, like this falafel sandwich, tends to be hearty and casual

In keeping with the Canadian stereotype, service is usually friendly and efficient. Dining in West Coast restaurants often feels like you’re a part of the family and that nobody would blink twice if you grabbed a glass of wine and headed into the kitchen for a chat with the chef.

The food is usually casual too, with organic salads made from local produce , stacked sandwiches on artisanal bread , and hearty homemade soups making an appearance on most menus. Fish and seafood is a big draw too — salmon and oysters have been a staple of the West Coast diet for thousands of years.

The West Coast even offers a uniquely Canadian twist on fast food. For lunch, do like the locals and stop in a Tim Hortons for soup, sandwiches, and a sampling of their famous donuts.

For vegans and vegetarians

As vegans, we have witnessed a huge leap forward in the last couple of years when it comes to animal-friendly food on the West Coast. There are tons of great vegan restaurants in Vancouver and omni restaurants usually have a few vegan option available. Victoria has a pretty decent vegan scene, too.

Outside of the cities, it’s harder to find dedicated vegan eateries, but most restaurants have animal-friendly options . If not, staff usually have a good understand of what vegan means and are happy to make something suitable.

Thanks to Beyond Meat , there are even fast food options for vegans travelling on Canada’s West Coast. Tim Hortons, A&W, and White Spot (all local chains) serve various Beyond Meat items. Boston Pizza has recently introduced a vegan menu, too.

Cool tip: You can also find vegan Magnum bars in most Shopper’s Drug Marts. Just sayin’.

Black Mountain, Vancouver, hiking, visit Vancouver

It’s pretty hard to get on the bad side of a British Columbian. For the most part, we are a live-and-let-live people. If you need any help, just ask the closest local and you’ll have more than you need in minutes.

But there are a few tips we can offer to avoid offending the locals.

Culture and Customs

For the most part, friendly, straightforward, and welcoming is the name of the game in BC.

However, we BCers also like our rules, especially as they apply to preserving nature or keeping things rolling along smoothly. So when you’re in a Provincial Park and the sign says “No Smoking” or “Stay on the Trails” it actually means it.

Disobey at your peril. West Coasters are not afraid to take you to task if they perceive that you’re doing something to disrupt the social or environmental order!

First Nations Culture

Thousands of years before Europeans moved into the West Coast, First Nations people were living in harmony with the land. White settlers destroyed this culture, inhabited their land, and created policies that put First Nations concerns last . It is a black mark on our history.

As a visitor to these shores, you can get a glimpse into the culture that once was, while supporting a culture that is currently struggling.

It’s easy to find top-rated tours, accommodations, and other businesses run by First Nations people. There are also lots of museums and other historical attractions dedicated to the culture – so plan some time in your itinerary to expand your perspective.

Eco-Friendly Travel

If you’re going to visit Canada’s West Coast, please be aware of the environmental impact your trip will have. Yes, you will see plenty of locals in outsized RVs cruising the highways of the province — but that doesn’t mean you have to join them.

Think about your choices of accommodation, eating, and activities, and decide if there’s a more eco-friendly approach you could take.

Do you really need that enormous RV or would a tent be a better choice? Are you aware of how the seafood you order impacts the entire ecosystem, including the whales you so desperately want to see? Are you really in such a rush that you need to hit the drive through lane? Could you eat in instead and avoid a lot of paper garbage?

Bringing your own containers to the store, not using disposable shopping bags, and using your own coffee cup are normal in BC, so come prepared to be part of the eco revolution.

We don’t ask you to be perfect, just think a little more carefully about the choices you make when you travel!

Charities and Non-Profits to Support

It’s our big audacious goal to start a movement of travellers who commit 1–10% of their travel budgets to support local people and environmental causes.

If you can afford to travel to BC, you can afford to put part of your travel budget into giving back to local communities and the environment. We encourage you to check out these charities and pick one to support.

I Love First Peoples

Empowers Indigenous children and youth to succeed through education and the motivation to stay in school. We bridge communities through practical projects that promote reconciliation and education.

David Suzuki Foundation

This Vancouver-based organization uses evidence-based research, education, and policy analysis, to conserve and protect the natural environment and to help create a sustainable Canada. Stephen and I personally support this foundation with a monthly donation

Orca Conservancy

jane at the beach in sechelt

What you’ll need to pack for your trip to BC really depends on the time of year and the type of travel you’re planning to do. You’ll want very different items if you’re planning 5 days in Vancouver than you’ll need if you’re going to spend 2 weeks in Haida Gwaii.

Here we recommend some items that most travellers to BC’s coastal region will need, plus a few extra items for specific circumstances.

All travellers

  • Comfortable, casual clothing – You won’t need much in the way of dressy clothes on a typical BC holiday. Bring comfortable outfits that work as well on the hiking trail as in a casual cafe and you’ll be set for most occasions. If you plan to splash out on evenings out in Vancouver or Victoria, you might want to bring slightly dressier travel clothes .
  • Sunscreen – Despite its rainy reputation, the sun does shine in BC. If you’re planning any beach time, kayaking, or outdoor adventures, you’ll need a good sunscreen.
  • Sun hat – Extra important if you plan to do any boating in BC.
  • Sunglasses – A necessity for boating, skiing, hiking, or days at the beach.
  • Rain jacket – Canada’s West Coast is nicknamed the Raincoast. Need I say more?
  • Umbrella – See above. Even in summer, rain can come out of nowhere. Be prepared.
  • Waterproof walking shoes – There are thousands of stunning hiking trails in BC and it would be a shame not to experience at least a few on your BC trip. You’ll most likely be stepping over mountain creeks or splashing through puddles, so waterproof shoes are best.
  • Refillable water bottle – Tap water in BC is clean and tasty. Bring a bottle that you can fill up before every BC activity.
  • Small first aid kit – Adventures can bring minor injuries and blisters. Pack a small first aid kit to make the little things a little less painful.

For winter travel

  • Toque/wooly hat and gloves – Though coastal BC is much warmer than the rest of the country, it does get chilly enough to need ear and hand warmers on occasion. Bring them along to help you stay toasty on the coldest days.
  • Warm layers – The weather can really vary in BC during the winter, ranging from bright, sunny and temperate, to cold and a little miserable. Pack layers so you can bundle up and strip off as needed.

For camping trips

Aside from the normal equipment you need for camping, we also recommend the following items.

  • Camping tarp – Have I mentioned that it rains in BC? Most BC campers bring extra ropes and tarps so that a little rain won’t get in the way of enjoying the outdoors.
  • Tent mallet – The campgrounds in BC tend to have hard-packed tent sites. If you have space, bring a mallet to help pound in those tent stakes.
  • Cook stove – Some campgrounds are pretty remote and the best option for meals is to cook your own. You’ll also welcome a hot cup of coffee or tea on those cool Canadian mornings.

my five acres

For the most part, Canadians are honest, friendly, and helpful, so you don’t have to worry much about safety when travelling in BC. Just use your common sense and you’ll be fine.

Aside for the social distancing and hygiene measures that go along with coronavirus, you won’t have to take too many extra safety precautions.

Wilderness Safety

Every year, Search and Rescue teams in BC are called into wilderness areas to rescue tourists who have strayed off the trail and become lost. British Columbia has an abundance of true wilderness, and it doesn’t take much to go from a fun day out to a terrifying or fatal experience.

When you’re heading out into nature in Canada:

  • Always let someone know where you’re planning to go. You can use the AdventureSmart app to help you.
  • Pack extra water, snacks, and warm layers in case of emergency.
  • Stay on trails and obey posted signs. They are there for your safety.
  • Carry a small first-aid kit for minor abrasions and bigger emergencies.
  • Fire-making kit, including waterproof matches and a lighter (in case one fails).
  • Signalling device, like a mirror or a whistle.

Before you go, read more about wilderness safety on the AdventureSmart website.

Safety in the City

Take the same precautions in Vancouver and Victoria as you would in other cities around the world. While both places are relatively safe, it’s still a good idea not to wander around unfamiliar neighbourhoods late at night. You also shouldn’t leave valuables unattended or dangle expensive cameras, purses etc off your arm.

Coronavirus Precautions

During the pandemic, British Columbia has fared extremely well under the wise guidance of now-famous Dr. Bonnie Henry . The virus barely touched Vancouver Island and the communities surrounding Vancouver, and cases across the province are currently well under control.

Be aware that as you travel around BC, you will be expected to observe the same social distancing measures as the locals:

  • Maintain a 2-metre physical distance from others
  • Wear a mask in public spaces
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer regularly
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow

If you feel ill, do not travel. If you fall ill while travelling, self-isolate immediately and call 8-1-1.

For those coming to BC from outside of Canada, there is currently a mandatory 14-day quarantine in place.

bc ferries are an integral part of travel on the west coast of canada

If you’re planning a city break in Vancouver or Victoria, driving is not really necessary. Both cities have compact downtown cores and reliable public transportation.

However, if you want to visit the rest of the coast, a car is almost a necessity .

Many locations for outdoor adventures are only accessible by car and some regions have limited public transportation. Driving in BC is very easy, with light traffic and well maintained roads — though you might encounter some dirt or gravel roads on more remote adventures.

Busses and BC Transit

It’s easy to get around Vancouver and Victoria by bus and Skytrain (Vancouver only). BC Transit networks are well planned, clean, comfortable and affordable . Smaller cities on the coast also have transit networks but they tend to be a little less comprehensive.

If you’re planning on visiting very small communities or islands, you may have a tough time getting around by bus, as services are very limited.

There are a few coach services in BC that will help you get between various cities:

  • The BC Ferries Connector allows you to board a bus in downtown Vancouver that will take you all the way to downtown Victoria (via BC Ferries).
  • The Island Link shuttle runs passengers between Victoria and Campbell River, stopping off at all cities in between.
  • Vancouver Island Connector offers summer services between Victoria, Tofino, and Uclulet.

Unfortunately, there are lots of attractions in BC that cannot be reached by public transport, so if you really want to explore off the beaten path, you will need your own transportation.

Most trips to coastal BC involve at least a couple of journeys on BC Ferries .

Ferries will take you between Vancouver and Victoria, to the Gulf Islands, to the Sunshine Coast, and between Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. Though locals complain endlessly about BC Ferries (services, costs etc), to me, they are one of the great joys of travelling in BC.

If you’re walking, cycling, or driving a motorbike, BC Ferries are extremely convenient . Just show up 20–30 minutes before departure time, buy a ticket, and get straight on the ferry.

Taking BC Ferries with a car can add a lot to your travel budget and requires a bit more planning.

During summer and on holiday weekends, BC Ferries routinely get sold out. If you want to get on a specific ferry, you’ll need to make a reservation ahead of time. If you show up without a reservation, you sometimes end up waiting for several sailings (which can be hours apart) before you get onboard.

Bicycle Touring

We spent two months last summer cycling Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. While we did love it, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for cycle touring newbies. There are a few reasons for this:

  • Hilly terrain – the geography of the coast is made up of islands, inlets, fjords and mountains. While it is undeniably beautiful, all these hills make cycling hard work. One of the steepest hills we’ve ever ridden is in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.
  • Highway riding – there are lots of places on the coast where there are no secondary roads to get you from point A to point B. That means cycle tourists often have to ride the highway. While BC’s highways usually have wide paved shoulders, it can still be uncomfortable cycling next to traffic going 100km/h, especially in the pouring rain.
  • Dirt backroads – if you’re lucky enough to find a back route, it is often gravel or dirt, which provides its own kind of challenge, making cycling with a fully loaded bike slow and grinding.
  • Spotty services – some areas of the West Coast have limited access to necessities like groceries. There were segments of our cycling trip where we had to carry 3 days of food and water with us. That makes for one heavy bike!
  • Lots of rain – even in the middle of summer, you should be prepared to cycle drenched, or to hide in your tent for entire days. We have experienced both, and neither is ideal.

I don’t mean that to sound terribly negative about cycling in BC.

If you’re an experienced cycle tourist, cycling on the West Coast can be great. And if you’re into bike packing, you’ll find plenty of amazing off-road terrain for your adventures.

However, if you’re a newbie, BC might not be the best place for your first cycle tour.

Hitch-hiking

Especially on the smaller islands and in more remote communities, hitch-hiking is fairly common. It usually works best for short rides . For example, from the campground to the ferry terminal, or from North Vancouver to the mountains. For longer journeys between cities, it’s probably easier and wiser to get the bus.

Cycling in Vancouver

Vancouver is a fantastic cycling city, and in the last decade, huge strides have been made in terms of infrastructure and public education. Most of Vancouver is accessible on bike paths or bike lanes. Plus, the city has reached critical mass, making cycling a normal and expected way to get around.

13 of the Best Canada Road Trips That Will Blow Your Mind

Alberta Road Trips in the Kananaskis

Canada Road Trip Last updated: April 1st, 2022

If the thought of being behind the wheel while driving amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the world excites you, then this Canada road trip article is for you.

As world travellers that specialize in Canada travel, we’ve done some epic road trips in our lifetime, including the Australian East Coast, the Oregon Coast, California, and parts of Mexico, Malaysia, Peru, and New Zealand. Still, nothing compares to the 150-day road trip across Canada we did back in 2017. Comprising over 27,000 kilometres of asphalt (and some dirt roads as well), we got to explore Canada from coast to coast to coast. However, not everyone has 150 days to dedicate to driving across Canada.

While there are many other road trips not listed here, as well as a variety of incredible destinations that may not include an iconic road trip, we believe these 13 itineraries below are some of the best road trips in Canada and we hope they are helpful suggestions when you’re ready to take your next Canada road trip.

Let’s get started.

icefields parkway canada

Table of Contents

Icefields Parkway, Alberta

How could I not start an article about Canada’s best road trips without first mentioning the Icefields Parkway, which has often been ranked as one of the best road trips in the entire world? Stretching 232 kilometres through both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, this highway invites you into a journey of mind-blowing scenery, including mighty mountains, waterfalls, turquoise-coloured lakes and rivers, and glaciers too. While the drive from Banff to Jasper really only takes upwards of three-four hours, you’ll probably want to budget an entire day for all the stops you’ll be making to take photos, short hikes, or even full-on tours at the Columbia Glacier. Popular stops include Lake Louise, Peyto Lake, Columbia Icefield, Sunwapta Falls, and Athabasca Falls, just to name a few. For those coming from Calgary to Banff , you just continue towards Lake Louise and then head North on highway 93.

Best time to go: This Alberta road trip is best from June to September, although May works as well. October is also good if you don’t mind a higher chance of rain in exchange for much fewer tourists. From November until April, you should expect snow and ice. This is also a beautiful time to do the road trip, but you’ll need to be much better skilled at driving and expect delays. In addition, many things such as the Columbia Icefield tour are closed.

Bonus: Due to the popularity of this area, it’s also a great place for delicious food. There are so many restaurants in the area and we’ve made some extensive guides, such as our guide to the best Banff restaurants and the best Canmore restaurants .

things to do frank slide

Cowboy Trail, Alberta

If you’re looking for some prairie and mountainous “wild west” scenery, Alberta’s Cowboy Trail is the road trip for you. Primarily located just south of Calgary, you could start your experience in the province’s biggest city, taking time to explore the many things to do in Calgary such as the Glenbow Museum, Heritage Park, Studio Bell, or the new central library. If you’re up for a party, time your visit with the Calgary Stampede, which is known as the greatest outdoor show on Earth. You could even stop by the Alberta Boot Company and grab yourself some authentic Cowboy boots or other Western-style clothing.

While the actual “Cowboy Trail” refers to Highway 22, which travels all the way from the Edmonton area down into the USA, our favourite part starts around Bragg Creek and takes you down past Turner Valley, Black Diamond, Okotoks, High River, Longview, and down towards Pincher Creek. You’ll pass a lot of stunning scenery and historical sites such as the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site as well as a number of Western-style towns before winding up in the Rocky Mountains such as the Crowsnest Pass and Waterton Lakes. If you’re not wanting to continue into the USA, you could return to Calgary via Highway 2, stopping to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump .

Best time to go: This is one of the best road trips from Calgary and is best done between May and October.

Parque Nacional de Banff

Banff to Vancouver via the Trans-Canada Highway

While the Trans-Canada Highway can take you across the entire country, the most beautiful part, in our opinion, is from Calgary to Vancouver . After just an hour or so, you’ll arrive in Banff with nothing but gorgeous scenery for the remainder of the drive. This 900-kilometre slice of the Trans-Canada takes you through Banff National Park, Yoho National Park, Mount Revelstoke National Park, Glacier National Park of Canada, and finally into Vancouver, which is nestled next to the Pacific Ocean. While this drive can be done in one very long 12-hour day, you’ll obviously want to take as long as possible to make use of the incredible national parks you’ll be driving through. There are also a number of side trips you could take, such as highway 93 down into Radium Hot Springs, and Highway 97, which will take you down to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley.

Tour Idea: Click here for a Smartphone Audio Driving Tour Offer .

Best time to go: This largely depends on what you aim to do. The safest time to go is during the warmer months when the highways are clear. However, if you’re into skiing, this is one of the best places in the world to shred powder, which is typically best between January and March.

For more tips on what to bring on a road trip, check out our Road Trip Essentials article.

There are so many things to do in Kelowna, which is why it makes such a great Canada road trip.

Road Trip around the Okanagan Valley, BC

While the Okanagan Valley isn’t really known as a specific “road trip”, it is home to one of Canada’s most famous wine regions, a gastronomic hot spot, and beautiful Lake Okanagan. There are all sorts of beautiful towns to visit, such as Kelowna , Penticton, and Vernon. There are all sorts of award-winning wineries, farm-to-table restaurants, and sandy beaches as well. This also happens to be one of Canada’s warmest regions, which can hit 40 degrees Celcius in the summer months.

Best time to go:  June to September for the warmest temperatures. April, May, and October are also great and a bit cooler.

best things to do in bc

Sea to Sky Highway, BC

This is the shortest road trip mentioned in this article but a great one to take if you’re in the Vancouver area. The Sea to Sky Highway links Vancouver to Whistler, which are less than two hours apart, making this one of the most popular road trips from Vancouver. Driving along the coast, this is a great place to see the beautiful west coast. Popular stops include Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver, Shannon Falls, and the Britannia Mine Museum. There’s also the Sea-to-Sky Gondola, which provides unforgettable views and a suspension bridge and of course, Squamish and Whistler, which provide all sorts of adventurous activities. In addition, don’t forget to experience Vancouver whale watching while in the city as well as all the other fun things to do in Vancouver .

Tour Idea: Sea-to-Sky Gondola and Whistler Day Trip Tour .

Best time to go:  July to September is Vancouver’s dry season, but if the rain doesn’t bother you, almost any time of year is good. If you’re into skiing or snowboarding, January to March is best.

things to do on vancouver island

Vancouver Island, BC

Vancouver Island is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Canada and is home to some of the best things to do in British Columbia . Not only does it have one of the mildest climates in the country, but it’s also home to a variety of landscapes, including rainforests, mountains, rugged coastlines, and scenic towns and cities, making it a great place for a BC road trip. It’s also home to beautiful gardens, epic hikes, surfing, scuba diving, and whale-watching tours. Two of the most popular places to visit include Victoria and Tofino, which are on opposite sides of the island. While driving between the two, don’t forget to stop at Cathedral Grove to marvel at the massive trees as well as the many other parks and towns along the way. Finish the trip with one of Tofino’s stunning sunsets.

Best time to go: a West Coast road trip is best between March to May and September to November. Summer is great too but is very busy and expensive.

Before you go, check out our article about things to do in Victoria BC .

One of the most adventurous Canada road trips is the Dempster Highway and this is how to drive the Dempster highway

Dempster Highway, Yukon

As Canada’s only all-weather road that goes past the Arctic Circle, the Dempster Highway has become one of the most unique road trips in Canada. However, this is not your average highway. The Dempster Highway is a 700-kilometre extremely isolated dirt road with only one service station (they also offer accommodation and a restaurant) option along the way in Eagle Plains. This road trip takes a little more preparation than the others and will be much harder on your vehicle than any other road trip mentioned in this article. However, for those who choose this adventure, you’ll be rewarded with incredible arctic scenery and the chance to drive all the way to Tuktoyaktuk and the Arctic Ocean!

Best time to go: The best time to go would be in the warmer months between May and early October. The road is open year-round but the driving becomes much more dangerous in the winter. Spring will bring a lot of bugs, summer will bring a lot of tourists, and the fall has no bugs and beautiful fall foliage (hint: our favourite time is the fall). However, if you time your arrival in Inuvik for mid-July, you might be able to experience the Great Northern Arts Festival.

These are the best views of niagara falls Ontario Canada. Located close to Toronto and Ottawa, Niagara Falls is a great place to visit during a Canada road trip.

Georgian Bay Coastal Route, Ontario

Looking for one of the best road trips from Toronto? With more than 30,000 islands and over 2,000 kilometres (1,243 miles) of shoreline, the Georgian Bay Coastal Route loops around the Bay from Toronto and features some of Ontario’s most stunning scenery. Some of the most popular stops include the Bruce Peninsula, Parry Sound, and Killarney Provincial Park. There’s also beautiful Manitoulin Island, which is the world’s largest freshwater island, as well as Wasaga Beach, which is the world’s largest freshwater beach.

In addition, you could also extend the road trip and add in the Chatham-Kent Corridor, which is comprised of 23 small communities overlooking Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Thames River. Basically, it goes from Toronto to Amherstburg, which makes this one of the most popular road trips from Toronto. This route is popular with motorcyclists but is equally impressive on four wheels. Without a doubt, the most famous stop along the way is Niagara Falls Canada .

Best time to go: Summer is great but also busy. Shoulder season in late August to mid-September or in the spring from May to June is also great. Either way, this is one of the best things to do in Ontario .

If you like lakes, the lake superior circle tour is a great Canada road trip.

Lake Superior Circle Tour, Ontario

While the entire Lake Superior Circle Tour takes you to both Canada and the USA, you could opt to do a half-circle tour and just stay on the Canadian side. Either way, it’s a beautiful drive and a really cool place to get out in nature. Lake Superior is absolutely massive and will make you feel as if you’re driving alongside the ocean. It’s home to some incredible scenery as well as some interesting history from the war between Canada and the USA. In fact, you can even go scuba diving to see shipwrecks. Popular stops include Sault Ste. Marie, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ruby Lake Provincial Park, Pukaskwa National Park, and Thunder Bay. This is one of those places where you should plan to spend at least a few days and perhaps go camping, hiking, or enjoy some time on the lake. It’s a great road trip in Ontario for those who love the outdoors.

Best time to go: The warmer months from May to October. July and August will be the busiest. Before going, don’t forget to enjoy one of the many awesome things to do in Toronto !

things to do in quebec

Montreal to Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec

For those wanting to experience a world-class city like Montreal, followed by a scenic road trip, the Gaspe Peninsula is the one for you. This 9-hour trip takes you along the St. Lawrence River, from Montreal to Quebec City, and up to the Gaspé Peninsula. Known for its pine forests and looming cliffs, the Gaspé Peninsula is a stunning place to visit. Some of the highlights include visiting the pierced rock in Percé, spending some time at the Parc de la Gaspésie, and taking a boat tour to Bonaventure Island. Obviously, the cities of Quebec and Montreal aren’t so shabby either. This is a great road trip for those wanting to mix urban and rural fun.

Best time to go:  June to mid-September. Want more? Here are other things to do in Quebec as well as the top things to do in Montreal .

best things to do in prince edward island

Prince Edward Island Coastal Drives

With so many beautiful coastal drives, the hardest thing might be picking the right one. Then again, you could always do all three. The tourism board has three road trips they recommend, which include the North Coast Coastal Drive, Central Coastal Drive, and Points East Coastal Drive. The North Coast will introduce you to its Mi’kmaq culture as well as some unique stops, including a potato museum and a college for the Highland arts. The Central Coastal Drive includes the Red Sands Shore and the Green Gables Shore region. This area is great to experience the beautiful red sand that PEI is famous for as well as the historical landmark of Anne of Green Gables. Lastly, there’s the Points East Coastal Drive, which is characterized by its parks, trails, and lighthouses. Either way, you’ll be treated to an array of stunning coastal views and delicious seafood along the way.

Best time to go:  The Eastern Canada road trip is best in the warmer months, as many attractions close in the winter. Want more ideas? Here are other things to do in Prince Edward Island .

Cabot Trail Nova Scotia

Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

For those visiting the East Coast, don’t miss a scenic drive on Cabot Trail, which is easily one of the best things to do in Nova Scotia . Cradling the coast of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the Cabot Trail has become one of the most famous road trips in Canada and the most famous East Coast Canada road trip. At 300 kilometres in length, most of which hug the coastline, this road trip is perfect for those who love the ocean and incredible views. Traversing through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, there are all sorts of places to stop off and go for a hike as well. One of the most popular hikes is the Skyline Trail, which takes you up to the peak of the highlands for jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic Ocean. There are also some small communities of Celtic and Acadian descent, which are also home to many artisans. This is another road trip that only takes 3-4 hours to complete but is better done over one day or more.

Tour Idea: Click here to learn about a low-cost Smartphone Audio Driving Tour .

Best time to go: June to September is best for good weather but October is great to see the fall foliage.

Spending more time in Nova Scotia? Don’t forget to enjoy some of the best things to do in Halifax !

Gros Morne National Park Hiking

The Viking Trail and Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland

Known to locals as “The Rock”, Newfoundland is one of the most unique and beautiful provinces in Canada. It has its lively music, food, culture, and a really friendly laid-back charm. It’s also a great place for a Canada road trip thanks to Gros Morne National Park and the Viking Trail. In fact, there are many great road trips in Newfoundland but this one stands out as the best. If you’re looking for incredible scenery, wildlife, adventure, and ancient history, there’s no better place to go. It all starts with Gros Morne National Park, which is home to landlocked fjords, mountains, forests, barren cliffs, and the sea. It’s also home to the only place in the world where you can walk on the Earth’s mantle. There’s also loads of wildlife, including moose and caribou. Then there’s the Viking Trail , which takes you from Gros Morne National Park up to St. Anthony’s. This is the tip of Newfoundland and home to the thousand-year-old Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. Both Gros Morne and L’Anse aux Meadows are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Best time to go: June to early October is the best time for good weather. It’s also the only time L’Anse aux Meadows is open. For more, check out our article on the best things to do in Newfoundland

Road Trip Canada – Canada’s Trans-Canada Highway

The Trans-Canada Highway is the most epic and incredibly long road trip you can take in Canada. It stretches across the country through all 10 provinces. Starting in Victoria, it ends in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Some of the (many) highlights awaiting road-trippers include Vancouver, Banff National Park , the Alberta Badlands, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal, Fundy National Park, and Gros Morne National Park, just to name a few. In fact, there are far too many highlights to include here. Just make sure you have a lot of time. Stopping only to sleep, this trip will take approximately 7 days. Personally, I’d want at least one month to do the whole journey from coast to coast. Add in an additional 2-4 weeks if you plan on going North to the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Best time to go:  April to October for optimal weather coast to coast. However, some parts of Canada still get snowstorms up until May.

We hope this list has inspired you to take a Canada road trip somewhere in this country, if not all the way across.

It can be connected with the TransCanada or Yellowhead for a circle tour of Western Canada from Winnipeg to Vancouver and return. Get on anywhere and experience woods, water and wildlife.

Do you have suggestions for renting a car that would allow you to rent the car on the west coast and leave it on the east coast?

April 4, 2023 at 1:51 pm

Not really. Some do allow that though for a fee. Sometimes you can book it this way through a site like Rentalcars.com, Expedia, etc.
