This train ride is likely going to far exceed your expectations. With old restored carriages pulled along by an authentic coal-fired steam engine through a breathtaking narrow mountain canyon, this trip has all the makings of a romance novel.

The train cruises alongside the Animas River much of the way, as the mountains towering above become more imposing as you make your way from Durango to the old mining town of Silverton.

In summer, the train makes the 45-mile journey, all the way to Silverton. You can do the summer trip as a nine-hour, two-way train trip, with a couple of hours to explore Silverton, or take the train in one direction and a bus back for a shorter day .

Alternatively, you can take the train up, spend the night, and then take the train back the next day, which will allow plenty of time to see all the sites in Silverton.

If you decide to do this as a one-way trip, it's best to take the train up, to fully appreciate the technical workings of steam engines, and the bus back rather than the reverse. The train back to Durango is downhill and is constantly breaking.

The train runs year-round but in winter it does not go all the way to Silverton. Instead, the train stops before the major avalanche areas and allows passengers to disembark at Cascade Canyon , 26 miles from Durango. This journey takes about five hours round-trip, with forty-five minutes to enjoy at the canyon.

Different classes and styles of carriages are available on the train. The open-air carriages with UV-protected glass-paneled roofs provide unbeatable views! In winter, glass windows are installed to keep you warm.

Purgatory Ski Resort in Durango touts itself as a family mountain but this is really a destination for everyone. Huge storms dump inches upon inches of snow here, creating outstanding powder days. Groomed beginner and intermediate runs have always been and still are a big part of the attraction at Purgatory.

Purgatory Ski Resort is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Durang o. If you don't want to stay in town, you may want to consider Purgatory Lodge , with ski-in, ski-out access to the mountain; two- to four-bedroom units; a pool; hot tub; and restaurant. This is a great option for families.

If you're looking for things to do in summer in Durango, you'll find plenty of activities at Purgatory! Fans of two-wheeled adventure should head to the Mountain Bike Park for some good times in the dirt. Miles and miles of ripping descents are on offer across all ability levels, even children.

Those without the inclination or equipment to go mountain biking should head to the Inferno mountain coaster for 4,000 feet of scream-inducing curves, drops, and even a 360-degree loop all while zipping along at 25 miles an hour, 30 feet above the ground.

For something a bit less intensive, try the half-mile Alpine Slide , where you ride a small board with wheels down a curvy course made up of U-shaped concrete. If all that seems a bit much, a pleasant and relaxing ride up and back down on the chairlift is always an option.

One of the most impressive Native American sites in the Southwest is found at Mesa Verde National Park , a little over an hour away from Durango.

The native settlement here was at its peak between 800 and 1,000 years ago, and the ruins can be found all over the mesa. These extensive cliff dwellings, built under huge overhanging rocks, include multi-story complexes, with ladders connecting various floors and rooms.

They are also surprisingly accessible to visitors. You can get right up and into some of these dwellings on a guided tour. If you are not up for a tour, you can view them from nearby lookouts, which offer impressive views of the remains.

The drive up to the site takes you up about 2,000 feet, to an elevation of more than 8,500 feet. You can do a driving tour to various sites. Be sure to stop at the visitor center before heading up to get information on the site and road conditions, particularly in winter.

The San Juan Scenic Byway is a 233-mile roadway that loops around Southwest Colorado, from Durango to Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, across to Placerville and Telluride, and back down through Dolores and Mancos to Durango.

The Durango-Ouray section is especially scenic, as it ascends up into the mountains and over three mountain passes - the highest pass is Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet - before descending through the spectacular Uncompahgre Gorge, all the way down to Ouray.

Along the way, you'll see the remains of the old Idarado Mine, mine shafts, tailing piles, and rusting equipment. The route from Silverton to Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway due to the expense of building the road in such a difficult environment.

Driving this section from the south to the north is considered safer, as you are on the inside of most of the turns. If you are heading south, you'll be on the outside and closer to the sheer cliff drop-offs, many of which do not have protective barriers. The road is narrow and twisty in sections.

The second half of the drive is also impressive but less dramatic. Along the way, Telluride is a beautiful area, and the scenic little town is definitely worth a stop.

The Colorado Trail runs for a little less than 500 miles through the Rocky Mountains from Denver to Durango. It's open to non-motorized vehicles, and is primarily a running, hiking, and mountain biking trail . From Durango, many people use this trail for day hikes and mountain biking.

The trail starts at Junction Creek, following this stream for about 2.5 miles to where it crosses a footbridge and then ascends about 600 feet over 1.3 miles, up to Gudy's Rest , a popular lookout.

If you are just looking for a nice walk, it's best to turn back at the bridge. If you want to do a longer hike and are feeling up for the climb, continue on to Gudy's Rest and then turn back.

Mountain bikers tend to continue on. For a nice bike and hike combination, bike in as far as the bridge, then hike up the switchbacks to Gudy's Rest, returning the same way.

The 1.8 million square miles of San Juan National Forest is Durango's backyard playground. You can find things to do year-round in this wonderful mountain reserve. Located just north of the city, this vast tract of ponderosa pines, snowcapped mountains, and fast-flowing rivers is a great area for hiking, biking, camping, snowmobiling, skiing, and river rafting.

You can explore the beauty and excitement of this wilderness area on a drive along the San Juan Scenic Byway or by taking any one of the numerous Forest Service Roads that crisscross the area.

You can find great mountain biking trails right in the city of Durango and in the surrounding mountains. If you expand your driving range just a bit, you can also do some non-mountain rides on fast and flowy trails.

From downtown, look to the Horse Gulch Area , home to more than 30 miles of trails. The popular Colorado Trail starts on the edge of town, quickly taking you up into the mountains for fabulous views and awesome riding.

If you haven't quite adapted to the elevation yet, or you are here in the spring before the mountain trails have opened, check out nearby Aztec, New Mexico and the Alien Run Mountain Biking Trail . Beside being the apparent crash site of a UFO in the 1940s, it's also a fun 10-mile loop trail with single track and slickrock sections.

Alternatively, venture out to Cortez , about 50 minutes from Durango, for a ride on Phil's World , known for swoopy, curving loops, combined with good views.

And of course, you can find all kinds of mountain biking adventure at Purgatory Resort .

Rafting down the Animas River in Durango is a fun way to spend a spring day. The river has class 1-to 5 rapids; the lower Animas River has the smaller and easier rapids, the Upper Animas River has the more intense and difficult ones.

Various options are available depending on how far you want to go, how large a raft you'd like, and how much you are willing to pay.

On the Lower Animas River, the city of Durango has recently created a specialized water park within the river with viewing platforms and man-made rapid features, including the Smelter Rapid.

The Railroad Museum isn't just another train museum, although you can learn all about steam engines here. This unique museum features an eclectic mix of items, with everything from antique cars to a solar-powered car, as well as antique farm equipment, covered wagons, models, mounted animals, and a variety of other random pieces.

You can walk right up into the engineer's cab of a steam engine, see deep inside the fire box, and view all the gauges, knobs, and levers.

The museum is a bit tricky to find. It's located at the train station, but if a train is in the station, you will need to walk to the very front of the train, past the hissing steam engine, and cross the tracks. The museum will be slightly to your left. Admission is free.

Durango dates to the 1880s and was an important center during the mining days. The streets of Durango, once plied by horse and carriage, still maintain some of their grand historic structures.

One of the most impressive historical buildings is the Strater Hotel , where Louis L'Amour wrote several of his books and where both JFK and Gerald Ford have stayed in rooms you can still rent today. The exquisite woodwork and detail in this 1880s and 1890s Victorian treasure are fascinating.

Also be sure to have a look in the 1898 General Palmer Hotel and the landmark Palace Restaurant, also from the 1890s. You can take a walking tour of downtown Durango to fully appreciate the buildings and the history.

The Animas River Trail is a paved trail that runs along the river for seven miles. Along the way are interpretive plaques, public art, and peaceful spots to watch the water flow by.

The trail is paved and is suitable for biking, walking, running, and is wheelchair friendly. Depending on the time of year, you can see fishermen, whitewater rafters, kayakers, or even people floating by on tubes laughing and having fun.

The trail passes through several pleasant parks including Rotary Park, Schneider Park, plus a skateboard park and the Wildlife Museum and Fish Hatchery. The most scenic part of the trail is from the Durango Recreation Center to the Highway 160 overpass.

With climbing debuting as an Olympic event at the 2020 Olympics, this sport is growing in popularity, and Durango is the perfect place to break into the scene or explore new routes.

The sandstone bluffs of the Animas River Valley and the granite walls of the San Juan Mountains are what climbers come to enjoy. You'll find great places for climbing and bouldering just outside of Durango. On the edge of town is Dalla Mountain Park , although most people call it Sailing Hawks , and this is where much of the action is centered.

The Powerhouse Science Center is one of the top family-friendly things to do in Durango. Housed in a historical old power plant dating from the 19th century, the facility is chock-full of fun for all ages, but is especially focused on the 3- to 10-year-old age bracket.

Interactive exhibits teach and entertain at the same time. Adults will likely find that the displays bring out the inner child in them as they discover things they never knew or had forgotten. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Powerhouse Science Center hosts a regular roster of traveling shows.

The Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum is a seasonal attraction (summer only), located just back from the Animas River near 16th Street. A fun outing for the family, you can see how 1.25 million fish are raised in order to be released into Colorado's waterways. Fish feeding is encouraged, and food is provided for a very modest fee.

The hatchery has four species of trout (Colorado River Cutthroat, Snake River Cutthroat, Rainbow, and Brown) in the "raceways" and also in a special pond for the larger fish. Next door is the Wildlife Museum, where various exhibits showcase the animals of Southwest Colorado. Admission is free to both, although donations are appreciated.

#40 Go SUPing on Lake Nighthorse

Stand-up paddleboarding or SUPing is a popular way to enjoy Durango’s lakes. Just outside of downtown Durango lies Lake Nighthorse , a large reservoir, and popular SUPing spot. Grab your board and your paddle and hit the calm, cool waters, and enjoy views of Durango’s mesas and mountains from the tip of your board.

#39 Tube Down the Animas River

During low-water and low-flow times, using an intertube is a great way to explore the calmer waters of the Animas River. Start your tubing adventure at the 32nd Street put-in and enjoy views of downtown Durango while you lounge and float your way downstream. Get out at 9th Street to avoid the larger rapids.

#38 Whitewater Rafting Down the Animas River

The ultimate way to experience the Animas River. The most common whitewater rafting on the Animas River starts north and ends a few miles south of downtown. The route crosses through several rapids including the famous Durango Whitewater Park. Most people hire a guide that provides gear, car shuttling, and navigation. Climb on board with one of Durango’s white water rafting outfitters for a day of laughs and smiles.

#37 Hike to Gudy’s Rest on the Colorado Trail

The 480+ mile Colorado Trail snakes through the entire state with one end in Denver and the other...in Durango! One of the best introductions to the Colorado Trail is to hike to “Gudy’s Rest,” a high spot on the trail that overlooks the Animas River valley and Junction Creek. This 7.9 round-trip hike hugs Junction River and pine forest the entire way.

#36 Fishing at Andrews Lake

Off of the San Juan Highway about 10 miles from Durango lies a hidden gem: Andrews Lake. A well-stocked lake at the foot of 13,000-foot Snowdon Peak, Andrews Lake offers 360-views of the San Juan Mountains while you’re  fishing for trout.

#35 Have a Picnic Off the Rim Trail

The Rim Trail is a very popular hiking and mountain biking trail that sits on edge of Fort Lewis College. With huge views of downtown Durango, the La Plata Mountains, and the Animas River valley, there’s no better place in Durango to have a picnic. Our favorite spot is in the grass field next to the Fort Lewis Chapel. Grab take-out lunch from a Durango restaurant, set up your hammock, and enjoy the views!

#34 Take an Evening Stroll with Ice Cream

Summer in Durango would not be complete without ice cream! After a long day of playing, get a frozen treat to go and take an evening walk around downtown Durango. Stroll down Main Avenue or on historic 3rd Avenue for a view of Durango’s historic homes.

#33 Bike the Animas River Trail

The Animas River trail spans over 9 miles from the north end of town to the south. This paved trail is a very popular biking trail during the summer and for good reason! You’ll see views of the La Plata Mountains, the Train, Durango’s mesas, and more as you bike ride along the Animas River. Our favorite part of the trail goes from the Durango Public Library to the Whitewater Park.

#32 Visit Molas Pass during Golden Hour

30 minutes north of Durango lies the 10,000-foot mountain pass: Molas Pass. The pass sits on a crest with 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains and is an epic spot to visit during Golden Hour and sunset. 

For incredible views of the mountains during Golden Hour, get to the parking lot at Molas Pass at 7:00. For a scenic drive, start at 6:00 from Durango and drive to Silverton and back.

#31 Drive La Plata Canyon

The La Plata Mountains are actually two ranges of peaks that are split by a valley: La Plata Canyon . Drive your way through 18.5 miles of scenic gold! The last two rocky miles may require a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a good old-fashioned hike on your own two feet. Either way, this activity will not disappoint!

#30 Kayak on Vallecito Lake

Head 20 miles northeast of Durango to Vallecito Lake to rent kayaks for a day of family fun! Splash around in one of the largest and most beautiful lakes Durango has to offer, as you spend your day surrounded by the mountains - a certain promise of spectacular views and lasting memories.

#29 Feed the Fish at the Fish Hatchery

Just a stone's throw away from the Animas River Trail north of Downtown Durango lies the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum . Besides being a nature museum with displays and information about Durango's local wildlife, visitors can feed the hatchery's fish via coin-operated dispensers. The outdoor tanks located on the grounds produce over 1.3 million fish a year that help stock some of the waters around the state.

#28 Hike the Colorado Trail from Little Molas Lake

The beautiful Little Molas Lake Trail offers a 10-mile round-trip up to Lime Creek. You will gain over 800 feet of elevation as you march the breathtaking trail, wedged within the San Juan Mountains. This is perfect for any intermediate hiker, and you can even bring along your furry friend!

#27 Enjoy Take-out at Buckley Park

Order take-out from our multitude of dining options and relax at Buckley Park, located on the north end of Main Avenue. This spot is a great place to hang out for a mellow evening or gather for a city-wide event, either way, this is the ideal evening spot.

#26 Disc Golf at Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis College offers an on-campus disc golf course , free to play on at any time. The course is composed of 18 baskets located on both the northeast and southeast sides of the campus and is an excellent place to hang out in a lowkey environment for a relaxing activity.

#25 Dinner or Happy Hour at the Diamond Belle Saloon

Go back to the 1800s while you dine at The Diamond Belle Saloon located inside The Strater Hotel- a Historical Landmark a living reminder of the past. The Belle offers an eclectic variety of dishes, happy hour every day from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, and a costumed waitstaff. Here, you are sure to find exciting ragtime music that will set the scene for an evening of Old Western magic!

#24 Agriculture Tour at James Ranch

James Ranch is offering a self-guided tour, where you can meet creatures such as baby goats, chicks, and cows in the milking parlor! Make your way to the market and buy the freshest produce around, straight from the farm to your homemade meals. Or, if you would prefer someone else make it for you, head to the James Ranch Grill for mouth-watering burgers, sandwiches, and beyond! 

#23 Play at the Powerhouse Science Center

The Powerhouse Science Center is an establishment that values the developmental importance of children learning and discovering, even when they’re on Summer vacation. The center offers a variety of camps, field trips, and tutoring programs that will occupy your child for a few hours while you relax and enjoy yourself.

#22 Take an Art Class at the Durango Arts Center

They are back from their intermission! 

While they are still not offering in-person performances, the Durango Arts Center is now offering online art classes to stimulate your creativity and shine a light on the magic of art! The classes include anything from ceramics to theater arts, and are available to adults and children alike!

#21 Fishing at Lemon Reservoir

Lemon Reservoir is a magnificent area just northeast of Durango. The reservoir is known for its award-winning fish and is a hub for all fish lovers. Bring your rod or rent one from a local shop and enjoy a day on the brink of the water, or, explore the other countless activities and amenities available.

Trekking the Sky Steps up to Fort Lewis is a must for anyone visiting Durango. The stairs start Downtown on 10th street and guide you all the way up to Fort Lewis College, where you can see our lively town below you, and the picturesque landscaping of the vast mountains in front of you.

#17 Summit a 14er

Any Colorado native will tell you that you can’t visit without climbing a 14er: a mountain with a peak exceeding 14,000 feet. If you are the athletic type, you may enjoy a journey to the top of one of the many 14ers near Durango , where you will spend approximately 10 hours hiking. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and a camera!

#16 Horseback Riding in the San Juan National Forest

Trot through the San Juan National Forest on horseback as you make your journey through the vast valleys and absorb the breathtaking scenery. Horseback riding is the perfect activity for the whole family to enjoy or a great pastime for couples looking for an easygoing adventure.

#13 Birdwatch for Peregrine Falcon in Perins Peak Wildlife Area

Durango is a haven for bird lovers who enjoy gazing up at the sky as the magnificent critters glide effortlessly throughout the vast sky. Check out some of the greatest bird hotspots in town and don’t forget to check out Perins Peak State Park to search for the Peregrine Falcon! Please note, everyone who enters a Colorado State Wildlife Area now must possess a proper and valid license to hunt or fish in Colorado, including mountain bikers, hikers, etc. 

#12 Hike Hogsback Mountain via the Ridge

Located west of Durango, Hogsback Mountain is home to one of the greatest hikes in the state! The Hogsback Ridge Trail is a moderately difficult 2.8-mile loop that promises great exercise as you make your way through the rocky terrain to the top of the mountain for a breathtaking view of the entire city and neighboring mesas.

#11 View the Circle of Life Ceiling at the Southern Ute Museum

The Southern Ute Museum celebrates the indigenous Southern Ute Tribe by educating visitors on the rich and vibrant history of Native American culture here. The building itself is a display of the architectural brilliance of the Southern Ute Tribe, as seen in the Circle of Life ceiling. The gallery allows museum-goers to catch a glimpse of the incredible artifacts and art created by the tribe, which serves as a reminder to honor the tribe and its history.

#10 Find the Bootleggers’ Hiding Spots in the Strater Hotel

Top things to do in Durango, Colorado

Located in Southwest Colorado, Durango is one of the largest mountain towns in the state with a lot of things to do and see. Home to historic railroads, mountain landscapes, hot springs, ski resorts, and unique history, there are plenty of things to do in Durango.

Plus, with its moderate elevation at 6,500 feet, the weather here is milder than most mountain towns in Colorado. Making it easy to explore in Durango , no matter the time of year!

No matter what time of year, Durango is open for whatever adventure you seek. From scenic drives and strolls through downtown to train rides and hot springs, there is no shortage of year-round activities in Durango.

Drive the San Juan Skyway

The San Juan Skyway is a beautiful, 233-mile loop that spans most of the San Juan mountains throughout southwestern Colorado. Taking approximately seven hours to drive the full loop, this is a grand adventure that can easily be extended by stopping at any number of stunning and historical spots along the way.

For those visitors hoping to experience just part of the San Juan Skyway, consider traveling from Durango to Ouray through Silverton. The section from Silverton to Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway, thanks to its beautiful views, high cost of construction, and its reputation as one of the scariest drives in Colorado due to a lack of guardrails and many steep drops. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful section of highway, and the views from the top of Red Mountain Pass at 11,075 feet make the harrowing drive worth it.

Stroll through the Historic District

No visit to Durango is complete without a walk through the town’s famous historic district, home to 86 historic buildings. Featuring shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums, it’s impossible to be bored while in downtown Durango. A great way to spice up a trip to the historic downtown is to visit some of the area’s boutique hotels .

Another option to spend time in downtown Durango is visiting a local brewery. For example, Steamworks Brewing Company is a fun, local brewery offering a full food menu aside from their sizeable local beer list including nachos, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza. Also, Steamworks features fifteen house-made beers, so visitors should be sure to try a few during their visit.

Ride the Durango-Silverton train

Offering trips year-round, a ride on the Durango & Silverton narrow-gauge train is one of the best and most unique ways to see the beautiful San Juan Mountains. With a number of train classes ranging from luxury to budget-friendly, all manners of visitors will find a seat to suit their budgets. The Presidential Class features a private outdoor area and unlimited drinks, while the Standard Class is more comparable to an airline’s coach seating.

Consider booking one of the railroad’s various packages to enhance the experience. For example, hotel packages include train rides and a stay at the famous Grand Imperial Hotel in downtown Silverton. While the various adventure passes add a bit of adrenaline to the train ride with ziplining, snowmobiling, and horseback riding available.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

Besides the famous train, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad also offers a free museum located in Durango. Open to the public year-round, this is a great stop for railroad enthusiasts hoping to learn more about the interesting history of the Durango-Silverton line.

Even including steam engines and various railroad cars, the museum is a fantastic way to get a sense of the rich railroad history of Colorado. Children are sure to love the eight hundred square foot model railroad display showcasing the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

Durango Hot Springs Resort

Located just eight miles north of downtown Durango, the Durango Hot Spring Resort is one of the best hot spring resorts in Colorado. With 26 unique hot spring pools and tubs, a visit to the resort is sure to be memorable and relaxing. Open daily, visitors to Durango should be sure to add this hot spot to their travel itinerary.

Aside from the abundance of pools and soaking tubs filled with geothermally heated mineral water, Durango Hot Springs Resort also offers a full-service massage program. With ten different massages to choose from including deep tissue and Swedish massages, visitors are sure to find the perfectly relaxing massage that suits their needs.

Mesa Verde National Park

Famous for its ancient cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde National Park is located around 35 miles from Durango. With six hundred cliff dwellings built approximately 1,400 years ago, Mesa Verde National Park is the best place to learn about America’s rich Native American history while experiencing beautiful views of southwestern Colorado.

Visitors should be sure to visit the Mesa Top Loop Road, a six-mile drive with trails scattered intermittently leading to twelve archaeological sites including cliff dwellings. Another fun option is Cliff Palace Loop Road. And just as the name suggests, this route offers fantastic views of the famous Cliff Palace, which is one of the largest cliff dwellings in the park. Additionally, there are a number of hikes in the park , like the Spruce Canyon Trail, a popular route for viewing the region’s wildlife.

Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio

Sky Ute Casino is a large, full-service casino located in Ignacio, a small town southeast of Durango. Offering sportsbook gambling, slots, table games, and even BINGO, Sky Ute Casino features a wide variety of games that is sure to please all visitors. Additionally, children will enjoy the bowling, arcade, mini-golf, pool, and playground on site.

With rooms, suites, and even space for RV parking, Sky Ute Casino features accommodations that will suit all visitors. There are also four restaurants on-site, ranging from an authentic steakhouse called Seven Rivers to the quick-service Shining Mountain restaurant, which offers pizza, nachos, and other fast foods.

Perfect for those rainy days or family-fun nights, Conundrum Escape Room is one of the best ways to spend a day or night in Durango. Visitors can book a private escape room, or multiple groups can play together in rooms that fit six to eight people. From hiking and mountain biking to adventures that swing you high and take you low, there are numerous summer activities in Durango for all to enjoy!

Hiking in Durango

With a town as close to the mountains as Durango, it’s no surprise that good hiking abounds nearby. From short day-hikes outside the city-limits to long, multi-day excursions throughout the area’s National Forest and Wilderness areas, all visitors are sure to find a great trail to suit all abilities and preferences.

One of the most popular of the nearby trails is the Animas Mountain Trail, a six-mile loop trail that starts and ends in Durango. With an elevation gain of 1,519 feet, this is a moderately easy trail, and the views afforded from the top of Animas City Mountain are well worth the six-mile hike.

For a more adventurous trip, consider hiking part of the famous Colorado Trail . A section of the 486-mile long Colorado Trail is in Durango, hiking a small section of the trail is easy. For example, hiking to Gudy’s rest, which is a nine-mile round trip hike with 1,300 feet of elevation gain, is a great way to get a sense of the Colorado Trail while staying close to Durango.

Take the train to Chicago Basin

One of the most popular summer hikes near Durango is the trip to Chicago Basin . This remote alpine haven is home to three of Colorado’s 14ers and an abundance of alpine lakes and wildflowers. Popular with hikers and backpackers, this destination is reached by either hiking the seven miles to the trailhead via Purgatory Trail, or take the train to the trailhead.

Ziplining in the San Juan Mountains

Ziplining near Durango in the stunning San Juan mountains is a family-friendly way to see beautiful views while trying something new and adventurous. Durango Adventures , located just outside of downtown Durango, offers zipline tours of the nearby area. Glide above the trees with the mountains at your back with two zipline package options, one with six lines and one with 12 lines.

Only accessible by the famous Durango-Silverton train line, Soaring Colorado’s Soaring Zipline Tour is the longest zipline tour in the United States. Soar through the air, surrounded by the San Juan National Forest on all sides, for the trill of a lifetime. This package offers 27 ziplines across five and a half hours, and it includes a four-course lunch on a platform suspended above the trees. For those hoping to combine a trip on the Durango-Silverton line with fantastic ziplining, look no further than Soaring Colorado.

Whitewater Rafting down the Animas River

With rapids ranging from easy Class I up to intense, harrowing Class V, visitors of all skill levels are sure to enjoy rafting on the scenic Animas River . Mild to Wild, a company offering rafting tours out of Durango, offers both single and multi-day trips on the Upper and Lower Animas. Beginner rafters should consider the Lower Animas River, where rapid levels stay lower while still providing an enjoyable experience.

Intermediate and advanced rafters should be sure to book an adventure on the Upper Animas, where Class IV and V rapids are not uncommon. Arguably considered the most difficult commercially run section of river in the United States, the Upper Animas River is perfect for adventurous visitors hoping for some adrenaline-pumping rapids.

Roller Skating at Chapman Hill

During the summer months, the Chapman Hill ice skating rink turns into a great spot for roller skating. An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon for visitors traveling with children, Chapman Hill offers rollerskate and rollerblade rentals for a low cost. Additionally, children three and under are free to use. Reservations are not required, but they are recommended to ensure a spot on the rink.

Vallecito Lake

Located just eighteen miles from Durango, Vallecito Lake is one of the largest bodies of water in Colorado. There is a range of activities available such as, swimming, hiking, camping, or enjoying a picnic with scenic views of the lake and the mountains behind it. Additionally, the Vallecito Marina offers watercraft rentals including boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, so all types of visitors are sure to find something to do.

For those hoping to spend the night near the lake, there are plenty of options in the surrounding area. A number of companies offer cozy cabin rentals, many of which are located within walking distance to the marina and offer WiFi, plus other amenities. On the other hand, RV and tent camping is a great option to extend a trip to the reservoir at a lower cost.

Lake Nighthorse

Lake Nighthorse is another scenic lake in the Durango area. Located within the Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area, there is a small fee to enter with discounts available for pedestrians, bikers, and seniors. Similar to Vallecito Lake, kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes are available for rent from local companies. For those hoping to catch some sun and swim, Lake Nighthorse offers a swim beach that is open from 10 am to 6 pm in the summer months.

Fishermen are sure to have a great time at Lake Nighthorse, as rainbow trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon are stocked in the lake. For a more exciting activity, Colorado Outback Adventures, a local company, offers water sports sessions including wakeboarding, wake surfing, and even water skiing.

Purgatory Resort

A visit to Purgatory Resort is another great way to spend a summer day in Durango. For those traveling with children, Purgatory Resort offers several activities that are fun for the whole family. For example, the famous Alpine Slide is a dual-track slide where friends and family can race against each other. Another fun option is the Inferno Mountain Coaster, a 4,000-foot long coaster that drops three hundred feet while surrounded by mountain views.

Purgatory Resort’s Mountain Bike Park is another fun summer activity in Durango. Several chair lifts will give you access to over 400 miles of mountainous single-track riding, access to the backcountry, and so much more. Mountain bike rentals are available along with lessons for beginners.

Backpack into the Weminuche Wilderness

The Weminuche Wilderness is three-quarters the size of Rhode Island, so it’s easy to design a multi-day backpacking adventure that suits the needs and abilities of all visitors. With an average elevation of around 10,000 feet and multiple peaks over 14,000 feet, the Weminuche Wilderness is a rugged and unforgiving landscape, so visitors should come prepared.

One option for a multi-day trip is from the Elk Park Train Stop to Needleton. At 36 miles in length, this trip would likely span four or five days for average hikers, and it offers the unique ability to ride the Durango-Silverton train to access the trail. The previously mentioned Purgatory Resort , which offers a range of activities during the summer, is also a great skiing spot in the winter. With a variety of trails to choose from, skiers and snowboarders of all skills can easily find a trail to suit their experience levels. Also, Purgatory Resort provides lessons for beginners and equipment rentals.

Hesperus Ski Area is another great local choice for skiing, plus it offers night skiing and a tubing hill. Finally, Chapman Hill is a small, local ski and skate facility located in downtown Durango. There is a sizeable hill available for skiing, and the area also features concession stands and an ice skating rink in the winter.

Jump off Bakers Bridge

…or don’t! While now illegal, this bridge used to be a popular point to jump off in the Animas River in the past.

Bakers Bridge is a bridge on the Old Shalona Road, about 15 miles to the north of downtown Durango.

It was first made famous as a filming spot in ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’, a Western film from the 1970s.

While cliff diving and jumping is now banned, you can still see a rope swing hanging from the bridge.

Drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton

The Million Dollar Highway is one of Colorado’s most scenic drives.

It stretches from Durango to Silverton, running through remote wilderness and the San Juan National Forest.

Durango is located in Southwest Colorado. It’s best known for its historic buildings and easy access to the legendary San Juan Mountains. Durango, CO has so much charm in one little town, offering great restaurants, breweries, shopping, etc.

The surrounding mountains offer some of the coolest hikes in Colorado. Although many of the hikes are a decent drive from Durango, they are well worth the trek! 

Whether you are looking to have a relaxing trip or indulge in some epic outdoor adventures, Durango is one of the best places for both.

Explore Historic Downtown Durango

Down Main Avenue in Durango you will find the historic downtown area which has tons of great restaurants, shops, bars, scenery, etc. The town was declared a Nationally Registered Historic District in 1980.

When you stroll through the town, you will feel the Old West vibe meets Southwest Colorado.

Definitely pop into some art galleries to see some great artist’s work. As well as many of the craft shops where you might find a fun souvenir.

Grab A Latte from Durango Coffee Company

Start off your trip by grabbing a delicious coffee from the Durango Coffee Company. The vibe of this coffee shop is funky, inviting, and unique. It is a great spot to connect and get some work done or grab a quick drink to go.

However if you plan to stick around, beware as it is definitely one of the most popular coffee shops in town. It was hard to find a seat when we first arrived and seats were quickly taken after people got up. 

Dine in at Hermosa Cafe

Just next door to Durango Coffee Company is Hermosa Cafe. Jake and I were trying to get a full day of work in, so after breakfast, we hopped over to this cute cafe. They have great made-to-order sandwiches but also have a full coffee bar and great craft brews to choose from. 

So you can either enjoy a nice relaxing day getting some work done or grab a delicious sandwich to go and take it along on one of the beautiful hikes listed below. 

Hike Ice Lake and Island Lake Near Durango

One of my all-time top things to do near Durango, CO is hike Ice Lake and Island Lake. Although it might be a decent drive from the town of Durango, it will be well worth the adventure. It is located about an hour and a half from Durango. But along this hike, you will be rewarded with some of the best views you might ever see along a hike in Southwest Colorado!

The lollipop loop hike for Ice Lake and Island Lake is 6.5 miles with 2736 feet elevation change. It is a challenging hike, but the aqua blue color of Ice Lake and the aqua green color of Island Lake are some of the most stunning colored lakes you can hike to.

Hike up to Columbine Lake

Columbine Lake is located about an hour from Durango, CO. It is yet another stunning aqua-blue lake in Southwest Colorado. But even the drive to this beautiful hike will be an adventure in itself. 

The hike is 8.3 miles with 2,933 feet of elevation change. It is another pretty challenging hike, but the reward at the end is well worth the adventure.

Grab a Beer from Steamworks Brewing Company

We visited Steamworks Brewing Company on NFL Sunday and what a treat it was. We got front-row seats to the game we wanted, killer deals on pitchers of craft beer ($11), and amazing food! To say it was one of our top things to do in Durango, CO is an understatement! 

We only got to try their juicy IPA and their Stout, but will hopefully be back to try more someday! For food, we both split Smokey Brisket Dip and the Southwestern Burger. Both are very delicious! Highly suggest their beer and food!

Grab A Brew at Ska Brewing:

Ska Brewing is another awesome brewery located in just south of downtown Durango. You will recognize a unique comic-style design on all of their beers cans.

Their tap room offers a great selection of different beers to try. Plus a kitchen serving tasty apps, and brick-oven pizza, and items from the grill.

Ride On The Scenic Train Through Durango

One of the most popular things to do in Durango, CO is take a ride on the scenic train. The Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was established in 1881 and now serves as a scenic way for passengers to see the beautiful mountains near Durango.

The scenic train ride runs from Durango to Silverton and is 45.4 miles one way. You will travel along the Animas River meandering through beautiful trees and mountains. 

The train usually runs from early May to late October.

The cost starts around $60 for children and $94 for adults for standard class roundtrip train rides. But you can upgrade to Deluxe Class, First Class, or Presidental Class for an additional cost.

Go White Water Rafting in Durango, CO

One of the best things to do in Durango for outdoor enthusiasts is go on a white water rafting trip.

The rafting trip will be down the Animas River which can be quite an adventure. You can usually choose “Upper Animas” or “Lower Animas”.

With Upper Animas being a full-on adventure up to a class 4 to 5 or Lower Animas which is around a class 2.  You will also have the option of a day trip or an overnight exploration down the river.

But if you need some thrill in your life, then be sure to book a rafting trip while you are exploring Durango, CO. 

Book a White Water Rafting Trip in Durango

Visit Mesa Verde National Park Nearby

About 35 minutes from the town of Durango, you will find Mesa Verde National Park. There are many great viewpoints and hikes in the area. Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 and protects nearly 5,000 archeological sites. If you are a history buff and love to see how our human ancestors used to live at this spectacular site, you will love this UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

In order to see the cliff dwellings, you will need to book a guided tour with a park ranger. This helps preserve the archeology sites. You can reserve tickets here or at the visitor center. But if you want a self-guided tour, you can check out Step House. There is usually a ranger on site to answer any questions. 

If the archeological sites aren’t necessarily your style you can hike to Mesa Verde Point Lookout which is 2.1 miles with 531 feet elevation change. It offers a stunning view of the valley. 

Or if you don’t feel much like walking around, check out the 6-mile drive of Mesa Top Loop Road. It visits 12 archeological sites where you will find paved paths to the viewpoints. You can even follow an audio tour along your route! 

Go Downhill Skiing at a Nearby Ski Resort

Colorado is most known for its epic ski hills. And while Durango, CO doesn’t have a ski resort in town, it has great access to some epic ski resorts nearby.

Hesperus Ski Area is a small ski area that is great for beginner skiers. It’s about a 15-minute drive from town.

Take A Scenic Drive on the San Juan Skyway

One of the most stunning drives in southwestern Colorado is The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. The drive is a long 235-mile loop, but might be one of the most breathtaking road trips of your life.

The drive starts from Durango and heads toward Silverton through the scenic San Juan National Forest. This next section is called the Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray. Then, ventures over to Telluride, down through Cortez, and eventually back to Durango to finish the loop.

1. Ride The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a must-do attraction when visiting Durango. 

Known as “the train,” the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad takes visitors on a scenic journey through the Colorado Mountains on its historic steam-powered locomotives. The 1880s train is listed as a National Historic Landmark, allowing guests to see areas of the Colorado countryside that can only be seen by foot or train.

The winding journey takes you through breathtaking canyons, past glorious waterfalls, and through gorgeous forest land. Routes are offered year-round and vary in length from just over 5 hours to approximately 0 hours. 

Be sure to visit the 12,000-square-foot railroad museum in Durango as well to learn all about the history of the railroad system in this area. 

Pro Tip: While different classes and styles of carriages are offered, we recommend choosing the open-air carriages for unbeatable views!

2. Drive The San Juan Scenic Byway & The Million Dollar Highway

The 233-mile road known as the San Juan Scenic Byway loops around Southwest Colorado through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and more before making its way back to Durango.

The most scenic stretch of road, known as the Million Dollar Highway, is from Durango to the hidden gem of Ouray. This section of the San Juan Scenic Byway ascends up three mountain passes, the highest one coming in at over 11,000 feet in elevation. 

Pro Tip: Drive this road from south to north for the safest route as you are on the opposite side of the cliffs, and read up on 8 Things To Know About Colorado’s Million Dollar Highway before you go!

3. Explore The San Juan National Forest

Durango is fortunate to have the San Juan National Forest as its personal playground. 

Located just north of Durango, the San Juan National Forest was established in 1905 by Theodore Roosevelt. 

While a ride on the Durango and Silverton Railroad or a drive on the San Juan Scenic Byway will take you through the national forest, there is nothing like exploring it in person.

This 1.8-million-acre wilderness is the perfect place to do some hiking, mountain biking, or camping. There are miles of back roads and thousands of miles of trails waiting for you in the San Juan National Forest.

Pro Tip: If you want to camp in this area, consider camping at one of the best campgrounds in Colorado , Little Molas Lake Campground!

4. Visit The Durango Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum

The Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum raises over a million fish a year to release into Colorado’s waterways. As the state’s oldest fish hatchery, you can learn all about this process and the conservation efforts when you pay a visit to the hatchery, which is located near 16th Street.

While admission to the hatchery is free, be sure to bring some money to purchase fish food so that you can enjoy feeding the fish during your visit. You can check operating hours for the hatchery here . 

5. Walk The Animas River Trail

Enjoy an afternoon out in nature walking the Animas River Trail. The trail, which runs for 7 miles along the Animas River, is lined with interpretive plaques and public art for you to enjoy during your walk. 

The trail, which is paved, is perfect for walking, biking, or jogging, and is wheelchair accessible. While walking the Animas River Trail, be on the lookout for fishermen and/or kayakers in the river! 

Pro Tip: If you only want to walk a portion of the trail, then choose the section between the Durango Recreation Center and the Highway 160 overpass as this is the most scenic portion.

6. Explore The Historic Downtown

The town of Durango dates back to the 1880s when it was an important mining town. This history is apparent throughout the historic downtown area. You can see the history in the architecture of the buildings, many of which still maintain their grandness today.

The historic downtown area houses some great boutique shops, lovely cafes and restaurants, and excellent art galleries. Exploring the shops and historic landmarks of downtown Durango is a must during your visit. 

You definitely don’t want to miss the Strater Hotel and the General Palmer Hotel . Both of these historic hotels were built in 1890, shortly after the founding of Durango. 

7. Enjoy Dinner Or A Drink At An 1800s Saloon

Take a step back in time when you visit the Diamond Belle Saloon located inside of the Strater Hotel!

This 1800s saloon will have you thinking you have been transported to the Old West. The wood paneling, long bar, live ragtime music, and costumed waitstaff ensure that you have a truly unique experience during your visit. 

The Diamond Belle offers a variety of food to choose from, so you are sure to find something to tickle your tastebuds.

8. Relax In A Hot Spring  

There is nothing more relaxing than soaking in a Colorado hot spring . Lucky for you, you can experience this during your time in Durango. Just head 15 minutes north of downtown to the Durango Hot Springs Resort & Spa. 

The hot spring waters, believed to have healing properties, have drawn visitors to this area for years. The water reaches the surface at 120 degrees, perfect for melting away the stresses of your day.

The resort offers day passes to enjoy the 12 spring-fed pools that vary in temperature. Please check their website for the most up-to-date hours and fees. 

Pro Tip: Bring your own towel as the resort charges a fee to purchase one. 

9. Play Golf Or Disc Golf

Durango offers a gorgeous backdrop for a day of golf thanks to its location in the Animas Valley. The gorgeous red San Juan Mountains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains provide visitors with stunning views to tee off to. 

Two popular courses in town are Hillcrest Golf Club and Dalton Ranch Golf Club , both of which offer tee times to visitors.

If you would rather try your hand at disc golf, you can do that during your time in Durango also. Just head to the Fort Lewis College Disc Golf Course , the course at Colorado Timberline Academy , or or Purgatory Resort .

10. Have Fun On The Animas River

Take a float on the Animas River to get a whole new perspective on the area. 

If you are visiting in the summer months, people often ride inner tubes down the river when the water is experiencing low-flow times. You can put your tube in starting at 32nd Street. Just be sure to get out prior to 9th Street to avoid the rapids!

Of course, there are other options for floating the river. You can join a whitewater rafting expedition on the Animas if you are feeling adventurous. This will allow you to experience some of the rapids that the Animas has to offer. 

Just take note that whitewater rafting requires participants to be able to sit on the side of the raft and help row. 

11. Check Out The Animas Museum

The Animas Museum is housed in a 1904 Animas City School Building and is the perfect place to visit if you want to learn about the history of the area. 

The displays inside include a replica of an early 20th-century classroom, historic documents, and photographs telling the history of the Animas area. There are also several examples of pottery, basketry, and beadwork on display.

Varying routes are offered year-round, but we highly recommend taking the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad tour during the summer when the train goes from the train depot to Silverton, Colorado.

Remember that different classes are offered on the train when booking your ticket. If the weather is nice, we recommend purchasing tickets in the open-air carriages for some incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

San Juan Scenic Byway and the Million Dollar Highway

To see the natural beauty surrounding this small town, take a mini road trip and drive the San Juan Scenic Byway.

The San Juan Scenic Byway is a 233-mile stretch of road that loops around the southwest corner of Colorado, passing through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride before returning to Durango, providing gorgeous views of the San Juan Mountains and the surrounding area.

If you don’t want to drive the entire 233 miles, we suggest you drive the most scenic stretch of the road, the Million Dollar Highway.

The San Juan Scenic Byway stretch between Durango and Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway.

While this section of road is nicknamed the Million Dollar Highway due to the large expense associated with building the road, we think it is called that for the million-dollar views you get during your drive.

This portion of the highway ascends up three mountain passes, with the highest one measuring over 11,000 feet above sea level.

These are truly breathtaking views of Southwestern Colorado and truly shouldn’t be missed when you visit Durango.

Purgatory Ski Resort

Purgatory Ski Resort is a fabulous place to visit in summer or winter!

Of course, the Purgatory Ski Resort is the place to go during the winter months to enjoy fabulous skiing in Southwest Colorado.

Boasting more than 1,600 acres of terrain and 11 lifts servicing more than 100 trails and an array of terrain parks, the Purgatory Ski Resort is a top Durango, CO, attraction during ski season.

If you are visiting Durango, CO, during the summer months, don’t skip visiting the Purgatory Resort, as it is much more than a ski resort. The Purgatory Resort offers loads of fun summer activities.

Summer attractions at the Purgatory Resort include the Inferno Mountain Coaster, a blast. We love riding a good mountain coaster, and the Purgatory Resort’s Inferno Mountain Coaster definitely didn’t disappoint.

The resort also boasts a mountain slide, great mountain biking trails, hiking trails, and more during summer.

San Juan National Forest

Head just north of Durango, CO, and you will find another fun place to enjoy the great outdoors, the San Juan National Forest.

The San Juan National Forest was established in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt and contains over 1.8 million acres of wilderness.

The numerous trails throughout the San Juan National Forest are perfect for mountain biking, horseback riding, or the perfect Colorado trail hike.

Mountain bikers flock to the San Juan National Forest to enjoy mountain biking through the gorgeous forest terrain and Ponderosa pines.

With miles of back roads and scenic trails, it is no wonder that the locals love having the San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Mountains in their backyard.

The forest is the perfect place to take a guided tour with one of the area’s Jeep tours!

Participating in a Jeep tour lets you get offroad and enjoy the scenery in the area you might otherwise miss!

Historic Downtown Durango, CO

When you walk the streets of historic downtown Durango, you might feel you have been transported back to the Wild West.

This former mining town dates back to the 1880s when this small town was just a typical Wild West old mining town.

Be sure to visit some of downtown Durango’s boutique shops and amazing restaurants before the art gallery hopping and sipping on local craft beer to close out a great day of exploring.

If you want to learn more about the mining town’s history, then take a historical walking tour of downtown Durango. This tour will teach you about the downtown area, including historic buildings like the Strater Hotel and the General Palmer Hotel.

One of our favorite things is to grab a drink at the Diamond Belle Saloon, located inside the Strater Hotel.

Belly up to the historic bar at the Strater Hotel and pretend you were transported to the late 1800s when Durango was just starting!

Animas River Trail

To enjoy some time outdoors, head out to the Animas River Trail. This trail, which runs seven miles along the Animas River, is great for mountain biking, walking, horseback riding, or jogging.

The Animas River is a tributary of the San Juan River and is a fabulous display of the beauty of the Colorado River system.

The Animas River Trail links downtown Durango to the northern and southern parts of the city. The beauty of the trail is that it is an entirely paved trail.

Enjoying a day on the Animas River Trail provides easy access to public parks and recreation areas, including Schneider Park, Rotary Park, and the Fish Hatcher & Wildlife Museum.

Animas River Rafting Trip

While the Animal River Trail is great, nothing beats floating down the Animas River!

Nothing beats floating the Animas River in the summer. Lucky for you, several tour operators will help get you out on the water.

Tour companies offer river rafting on the lower Animas River ranging from 90 minutes to full-day trips. No matter your choice, rafting the Animas River is a must-do summer activity in Durango, CO!

Durango Hot Springs

Nothing beats soaking in a Colorado hot spring for the ultimate in relaxation. We loved visiting all the hot springs in Steamboat Springs , so we had to add this to our list of things to do in Durango.

A fabulous place to enjoy hot springs is the Durango Hot Springs Resort .

Located about 15 minutes north of downtown Durango, the Durango Hot Springs Resort offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy their hot springs while surrounded by fabulous mountain views.

Colorado Trail

The Colorado Trail is a popular hiking and mountain biking trail that stretches 567 miles from Denver to Durango, CO.

While you might not be up to hiking the entire Colorado Trail, you can add some of it to your Durango itinerary.

You can start the trail at Junction Creek and go to Gudy’s Rest.

This portion of the trail is a great place for a day hike in Durango. Located on a portion of the Colorado Trail, Gudy’s Rest is a moderately challenging 9-mile hike at the trail’s end.

How impressive is it to go back and tell your friends that you hiked the Colorado Trail?

Powerhouse Science Center

Visitors will find the Powerhouse Science Center located along the Animas River.

Using several hands-on exhibits, this fun, hands-on museum teaches guests about electricity and steam power.

The Powerhouse Science Center offers great traveling exhibits every few months, so you are guaranteed to see something cool and unusual during your visit!

Dalla Mountain Park

If you haven’t gotten your fill of mountain biking, climbing, and hiking yet, you must visit Dalla Mountain Park on your Durango itinerary.

This beautiful park is set among 175 acres of forest and sandstone boulders.

Climbers are drawn to Dallas Park to try scaling the large sandstone boulders throughout the property, while hikers and mountain bikers love the miles of trails that transverse the terrain.

It is important to note that the Dallas Park trails are considered advanced due to the technical terrain found here.

Mesa Verde National Park

Granted, Mesa Verde National Park is technically located outside of Durango, CO; it should definitely be on your list of things to do.

Known for the amazing cliff dwellings that were carved into the side of the cliffs more than 700 years ago, Mesa Verde National Park is a must-visit.

It is incredible to see how the ancestral Pueblo people carved their homes right into the sides of the cliffs at Mesa Verde National Park.

Start off your time at Mesa Verde National Park by checking out the Visitor Center to learn about the ancestral people of this area before exploring the ancient cliff dwellings.

Once you have seen the dwellings, explore the rest of the park by enjoying over 30 miles of trails that make their way through the Colorado terrain.

Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum

For an experience as unique as Durango, don’t miss an opportunity to visit the Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum.

Located on over 18 acres, the Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum is the state’s oldest fishery.

The coldwater stream on the property is the perfect place to try fishing; be sure you obtain the necessary permits before casting your line.

You have a good chance of hooking a fish considering the fish hatchery stocks over 1.5 million catchable fish a year!

The onsite Wildlife Museum is a great place to learn more about the wildlife in this area. The museum is small and can be seen in under an hour, so don’t miss it during your visit.

James Ranch Market & Grill

For an awesome farm-to-table dining experience, head to James Ranch Market & Grill.

This 400-acre farm prides itself on providing its guests with pasture-raised meats, including beef, chicken, and pork, in addition to the succulent vegetables grown here.

The outdoor dining area is surrounded by gorgeous red rock cliffs, making it the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal accompanied by locally produced organic beer, wine, or cider.

Emerald Lake

Experienced hikers should jump at the chance to hike to the breathtaking Emerald Lake.

The hike to Emerald Lake lets you enjoy magnificent views at elevations reaching up to 2,000 feet during the 20-mile roundtrip journey.

Once you reach the lake, you can swim in the frigid water or relax and enjoy the views!

Oxbow Park and Preserve

To get up close and personal with some of Durango’s wildlife, go to Oxbow Park and Preserve.

Oxbow Park is a riverside park containing 44 acres of preserved wildlife habitat.

Here you can find elk, deer, fox, bobcats, and over 85 species of birds, including bald eagles!

Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the park or relax by the river. You never know what you might see.

11th Street Station

Head to 11th Street Station for a fun and unique dining experience in Durango, CO.

What was once an auto repair shop and gas station has become a food lover’s paradise boasting some awesome Durango food trucks.

Visitors can find everything from gourmet sliders to aromatic wood-fired pizzas when they visit 11th Street Station.

Once you’ve settled on your dinner, pair it with a great cocktail from Ernie’s Bar, now where the original service station used to be.

Steamworks Brewing Company

Steamworks Brewing Company is the definition of a Colorado craft brewery.

Housed in an awesome warehouse-like space on East 2nd Avenue, Steamworks Brewing Company serves up loads of delicious beer, sure to please any beer drinker.

Whether you prefer a cold IPA or a great Pilsner, Steamworks has you covered.

To learn more about the brewing process, you can tour the microbrewery before enjoying a tasting of their beers.

Four Leaves Winery

Beer isn’t the only delicious beverage served in Durango, CO; it also has a great wine scene.

To try some of the awesome wines produced in Colorado, head to Four Leaves Winery.

Not only can you enjoy wines produced by Four Leaves Winery during your visit, but you can also make your own custom blend wine!

Pinkerton Hot Springs

Head about 20 minutes north of Durango, CO, and you will find the incredible Pinkerton Hot Springs.

The now unassuming attraction was once the site of an incredible natural spa and resort established in 1875 by James Pinkerton.

The resort, a tourist hot spot, burned down and was left in disrepair until 2001, when the site became just a hot spring.

What were once man-made cement steps now look like a natural rock structure and sit gracefully marking the hot springs.

Animas Museum

Visitors will find the Animas Museum in the 1904 Animas School Building.

The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Durango community and houses relics and documents dating back to the Native Americans that first called this area home.

During the self-guided tour, you can learn about local history and see the historic school building the museum calls home.

Birdwatchers, boaters and families visit Lake Nighthorse on opening day

Kayakers, bird watchers, trail hikers and parents with energetic toddlers were some of the first to visit Lake Nighthorse on opening day of the spring season Friday.

The waters of Lake Nighthorse reflected pleasant, blue skies, although the reflection was elusive because there was hardly a trace of clouds above.

Lake Operations Supervisor Sean Willis said six or seven vehicles were lined up at the entrance when the lake opened at 9 a.m. By 10:30 a.m., between 30 and 35 people had crossed the entrance.

Amanda White, co-vice president of Durango Bird Club, stood by a pier near the designated swim beach with her weighted tripod and spotting scope. She looked over the lake through the lenses with narrowed eyes with her dog Josie by her side.

She said the lake is a “spectacular” resource for migratory birds.

“Lake Nighthorse has become a good migratory stopover for, particularly, waterfowl. Because they can see it from above. Even though this isn’t a natural water habitat,” she said.

Pastorius Reservoir southeast of Durango is the usual migratory hotspot for waterfowl, but since Lake Nighthorse’s opening, many of the birds have landed at the reservoir instead.

“It’s really weird,” she said.

Even a common loon, an oxymoronically rare bird species that has protected status in some states, appeared at Lake Nighthorse, she said.

“It’s really neat and you don’t see that at Pastorius,” she said. “They favor larger bodies of water. This is a large body of water.”

White said 173 bird species in total have been spotted at Lake Nighthorse.

Among them are white-faced ibises, American avocets, warblers, four species of hummingbird (including calliope hummingbirds), and great horned owls, she said.

She speculated that tracks in the sand near the water’s edge on Friday might belong to a goose, but she said she wasn’t sure.

Willis said the lake is open strictly to nonmotorized use until May 15 when motorboats and other watercraft that create waves will be permitted during specified hours.

For now, visitors can paddle board, kayak, fish and walk with their dogs, he said.

An Albuquerque man who identified himself as Chris took a day trip Friday to hike along a trail around part of the lake. He said it was great.

“Snow-capped mountains on one side across the lake? Oh, it’s gorgeous,” he said.

Parents John and Britney, who live in the Rafter J neighborhood west of downtown Durango, said they visited the lake Friday morning to let their 17-month-old son tire himself out playing on the beach.

Britney said they are frequent visitors to the lake when it is open.

“We like it here. It’s nice to have in our backyard,” she said.

White said she supports extended wakeless hours at Lake Nighthorse, something residents of Durango and La Plata County are split on.

She said her opinion is informed both by her passion for nature and the environment and personal experience.

When she and her partner were canoeing in Michigan, where she is from, a speedboat struck her canoe at 50 mph.

The crash split her canoe in half, shredding the aluminum material that was left with “giant serrated jaws,” she said, referencing Steven Spielberg’s titular 1974 movie “Jaws.”

She said she also wishes the lake opened to the public as early as 7 a.m. at least once a week.

“Basically, birds shut down by 10 o’clock. Like especially the things that are singing ... it’s all stopped,” she said.

She said Durango Bird Club members are allowed entrance to the lake when it is closed for the winter to perform a Christmastime bird count, but being present when birds are most active would be an appreciated privilege.

The annual spring bird count for bird researchers and hobby birders will soon be upon the birding community, she said.

Lake Nighthorse is now open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays for nonmotorized use from Friday through May 5, according to the city.

Daily operations open on May 10 and motorized use will be permitted starting May 15.

The West is home to some of the most charming and scenic small towns in the country, hosting amazing art communities, tons of outdoor adventure opportunities, and top-notch dining options.

These 10 small towns — each with a population of fewer than 25,000 — have been selected by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the region for their diverse offerings.

No. 10: Ashland, Oregon

Located in southern Oregon, Ashland attracts thespians and theater lovers from all over with their incomparable Oregon Shakespeare Festival, ongoing since 1935. But if that’s not your thing, North Mountain Park and other nearby green spaces offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy a peaceful time outdoors. Top-notch dining, shopping, and crafts fairs and markets are also a draw.

No. 9: Durango, Colorado

Deep in southwestern Colorado is the mountain town of Durango, a place so gorgeous it's been used as the backdrop for countless films including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "City Slickers," and "National Lampoon's Vacation." Speaking of its natural beauty, you can enjoy the great outdoors in all sorts of ways here, from rafting down the Animas River to skiing and snowboarding at any of the nearby ski resorts. Visitors can also explore over a dozen historic sites and even Mesa Verde National Park.

No. 8: Williams, Arizona

Williams is a place for grand adventure and grand escapes, especially given how close it is to the one and only Grand Canyon (which can be accessed via the Grand Canyon Railway, built in 1901). But there's plenty of Americana charm to be found here, too, thanks to the town's connections to the historic Route 66. You'll see plenty of neon signs beckoning visitors to stop in for diner food, milkshakes, and kitschy souvenirs.

No. 7: Bainbridge Island, Washington

A short ferry ride west of Seattle is Bainbridge Island — a harmonious respite from the nearby city life. Try a yoga class at Dayaalu Yoga and Wellness Center or spend some quiet time inside one of the local museums, like the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, or KiDiMu (if you’ve got young ones along). The Bloedel Reserve is a major attraction for visitors of all ages, where you can explore 140 acres of meadows, forests, and gardens.

No. 6: Gig Harbor, Washington

Located along the South Puget Sound, this charming little town offers plenty of activities for a relaxing time in the Pacific Northwest. Bed-and-breakfasts are aplenty, as are scenic walking areas like the Chalet in the Woods and Crescent Creek Park. A history museum, multiple breweries and distilleries, eateries (fine dining as well as more casual grab-and-go spots), plus boat tours and even gondola rides are all available to enjoy.

No. 5: Manitou Springs, Colorado

Right outside of Colorado Springs is the absolutely charming Manitou Springs, where you can find everything from art galleries and ice cream shops to an old school penny arcade. But the bigger draws? Cave of the Winds Mountain Park, where you can take a tour of the caves and enjoy thrilling adventures, as well as the Manitou Incline, where the fittest of locals and visitors alike attempt to climb up 2,000 vertical feet via 2,744 steps.

No. 4: Cody, Wyoming

Named after Colonel William Frederick Cody (aka Buffalo Bill), this small northwestern Wyoming town is perfect for a Wild West-style getaway. Visitors can go on a wild mustang tour to learn about local wildlife, check out a re-creation of an old frontier town, or enjoy the outdoors at Buffalo Bill State Park. And for the history buffs, there are multiple museums in the area, including the Draper Natural History Museum, the Buffalo Bill Museum, and the Plains Indian Museum.

No. 3: Grants, New Mexico

Just an hour west of Albuquerque, you'll find Grants — a little town that offers proximity to a variety of unique and interesting experiences. After taking an obligatory photo with the Route 66 sign, you'll find plenty of things to do, including exploring the volcanic landscape of El Malpais National Monument and enjoying a drink and a bite to eat at Junkyard on 66 Brewery, a functioning auto salvage yard.

No. 2: Solvang, California

Sometimes you come across a small U.S. town that makes you feel like you've been transported to a totally different country, and Solvang is just that. Chock-full of Danish history and heritage, you'll find Danish-inspired architecture, including some truly charming windmills, Scandinavian eateries like the Red Viking, and even the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art. 

No. 1: Seward, Alaska

Known as the gateway to the majestic Kenai Fjords National Park, this port city offers an array of excursions for folks hoping to see glaciers up close, spot orcas and other wildlife, and be immersed in the culture of the Indigenous peoples of the area. The best part is there are so many ways to do all these things, from going dog sledding to enjoying a tour via kayak, or even visiting the Alaska SeaLife Center to see puffins and sea lions up close.

That said, I see the shortest trip is 5 and half hours long. I am afraid the kids will get bored less than half way.

Has anyone done this trip with young children to give an idea of hiw they endure it?

That is the Express Excursion.

Which would be a bus/ train trip.

Or... we have also had one member in our party meet us in Silverton and drive us back.

You don't need a whole lot of time to spend in Silverton, as the cute little town is small.

Do the train up and bus back! They get all excited in the morning to ride train and after awhile do get bored or antsy or just cranky (been there done that). We will never again to the train both directions.

The total solar eclipse 2024 is happening today! Here's what you need to know

Millions are ready to watch  —  are you?

It's the day we've all been waiting for! Total solar eclipse 2024 is finally here. Today (April 8) a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America from Mexico, through 15 U.S. States and up through Canada. For viewers inside the path of totality, the moon will completely cover the sun, darkening the sky and revealing our star's hidden outer atmosphere.

Every U.S. State will experience at least a partial solar eclipse today. If you want to check what time you'll be able to see the solar eclipse and find out what it may look like from your location check out this great interactive map from NASA . 

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. It appears almost exactly the same size as our sun and for those witnessing the event from the path of totality, it will completely cover the sun's visible disk.

Remember NEVER look directly at the sun. To safely view all of this event, you must use solar glasses or filters. Only those in the path of totality will be able to remove them briefly to see the sun's corona with their naked eyes. Those not in the path of totality must keep them on the entire time. 

Everyone observing the partial phases of this eclipse — and for those outside the path of totality, that's the entire event — will need to wear solar eclipse glasses while cameras, telescopes and binoculars will need solar filters placed in front of their lenses.

Solar eclipse map shows path of totality for 2024 event

T he path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse on 8 April will cross directly over 44 million people in North America, while hundreds of millions more have the chance of witnessing a partial solar eclipse.

The celestial spectacle will see the Moon pass directly in front of the Sun, turning the sky dark for several minutes under the path of tatality. Beginning over the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, it will reach the west coast of Mexico at around 11.07am PDT (7.07pm BST).

The path of totality will then cross over to Texas before it passes over Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermonth, New Hampshire and Maine.

The solar eclipse will then cross over into Canada, passing over Southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton.

Major cities beneath the path of totality include Durango, Austin, Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Toronto and Montreal.

The path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse on 8 April crosses North America, so will only be visible from Mexico, the United States and Canada, however a partial eclipse will be visible from as far away as the UK and Ireland .

Glasgow will see 11 per cent obscuration of the Sun, while Galway in the west of Ireland will see more than a third of our closest star covered by the Moon. In England, Manchester and Liverpool will see less than 1 per cent obscuration, with the event taking place just before sunset.

Jonathan Blazek, an assistant professor of physics at Northeastern University in the US, said even those not directly beneath the path of totality will have the opportunity to gain a few minutes of “cosmic perspective” during Monday’s eclipse.

“The eclipse is a powerful reminder of our place in the Solar System,” Professor Blazek told The Independent .

“The Sun is such a constant in our lives that it is easy to forget that it is actually a very large star that is quite far away. When the Moon passes in front, it becomes a bit easier to grasp where we are and how we are just a small part of the whole.”

The eclipse comes just seven years after the last total solar eclipse in the US, while another one is set to take place in North America in 2033.

The next solar eclipse over the UK will not take place until 2090.
