Why It’s Worth Visiting Texas Hill Country for Wine Tasting

From finely-tuned Tempranillo, crisp Viognier to beautiful Rhone-style red blends , Texas Hill Country Wineries are not only situated around beautiful scenery, but the wines they’re producing are only beginning to gain worldwide recognition. That’s because the majority of Texas Hill Country vineyards only sell their wines within Texas – otherwise, the Texas wine bug would have gone viral long ago.

That’s why I’m aiming to expose this juice. The Texas Hill Country was largely overlooked until the past few years. (It wasn’t until the early 1990s that much of anything was produced here).

But did you know that now the Texas Hill Country AVA is the third-largest AVA in the U.S. ? At over 9,000,000 acres, and with a climate and terroir not unlike Rioja, Spain or Southern Rhone, France, skilled vintners are discovering the potential to produce world-class wine within the soil of this unique location.

Navigating The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail on Wine Road 290

Today we’re going to take a look at a stretch of road that leads through the picturesque region of Fredericksburg, Texas. That stretch of road is aptly named Wine Road 290 . The whole area is unique in that many of the vineyards and wineries are a part of the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 Association. Thus, what benefits one winery typically benefits another, as many are located right next to each other. This makes a day trip to the region incredibly convenient.

How many wineries should I visit?

That depends on the tolerance of your group. Things to keep in consideration:

  • If you’re drinking and driving – don’t overdo it. Consider hiring a driver or   jumping on a shuttle from Austin
  • Begin your day in the late morning on a full stomach — by 11 AM most wineries are open
  • Plan your Texas Hill Country wine tour for a weekday — fewer crowds

Below, we’ll highlight 10 of our favorite Texas Hill Country Wineries. Starting in Stonewall, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary of wineries to visit that any wine enthusiast or group can enjoy without breaking the bank.

Best Texas Hill Country Wineries

Only about one hour and 30 minutes northwest of downtown Austin, Wine Road 290 in Fredericksburg can be easily accessed by hopping on Mopac (TX-1), and then merging onto US 290 – West.

Did you know Texas Hill Country is an up-and-coming Viognier growing area? Elevated, sunny, windswept, limestone hillsides provide ideal growing conditions for stubborn grapes like Viognier. Some Vintners here have really begun to fine-tune their craft and produce refreshing white wines. While the whites are great, my favorite red in all of Hill Country came from Pedernales.

Pedernales Cellars makes for a great first stop for a wine tour in Fredericksburg because it will leave an impression on you. This is an award-winning winery, with a beautiful patio that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding hill country. You’ll often encounter live music at the winery, adding a bit of an Austin-esque feel to this remote and flavor-prone property.

Don’t be shy to roam around the estate! Grapes are sourced from multiple vineyards within the region, and as I mentioned above, their GSM red blend is my favorite red wine thus far in all of Texas Hill Country. Tastings do not need to be scheduled in advance.

2916 Upper Albert Road, Stonewall, Texas

(830) 644-2037

Perissos Vineyard and Winery

For a European-vibe right here in Texas, consider a visit to the lovely property at Perissos. Winetravelers frequently rave about the warmth and southern hospitality of the staff at this winery. In addition, the atmosphere is one of our favorites in the region. This is a beautiful destination if you’re looking to have a relaxing afternoon by the vines, enjoy a bottle of wine and nibble on some cheese and charcuterie. Live music is also common here. Wine tastings do not require a reservation and are $18 per person. Tours are also available for $40 per person.

7214 Park Rd 4 W, Burnet, Texas

Becker is a bit more mainstream (now producing around 1.3 million bottles annually) and has a few other… attractions associated with the property. If you time your visit in either May or June, there’s a good shot you’ll get to see a sweeping lavender field not far from the tasting room. They also have extensive fields of wildflowers if you time your visit right.

The beginning of summer is also peak season so it can get somewhat crowded. Try to plan your visit during the week. Check out a virtual tour of the Becker tasting room and property. On-site tours typically run every 30 minutes on weekends.

If you’re looking to stay in wine country a little bit longer, Becker has a Bed & Breakfast adjacent to the property for around $125 per night.

464 Becker Farms Rd, Fredericksburg, Texas

(830) 644-2681

Sister Creek Vineyards

This homey, cute and welcoming location is actually a winery that was converted from a cotton gin. Sister Creek in Texas Hill Country is best known for its friendly staff, great tasting wines and unique atmosphere.

Plus, they’re not overpriced. You’ll be satisfied with your tasting experience, and definitely ask about getting a winery tour — they’re free.

This award-winning winery offers two kinds of tastings at two low prices, and their wine styles focus on European blends. Plus, they’re open most days of the year.

1142 Sisterdale Rd, Boerne, Texas

(830) 324-6704

If you’re looking to merge a wine tasting experience with a meal, Silver Dollar is well worth a stop on the western side of Hill Country. From build-your-own-pizzas, chicken wings to street tacos, relax in a hammock chair and sip and swirl amongst the vines. Try pairing a pizza with the Peace Maker Merlot, you won’t be disappointed. This is a true destination for Texas food, wine and hospitality. There’s a good chance you’ll also get to enjoy a visit with the owner.

8264 US-290, Johnson City, Texas

(830) 308-7750

Grape Creek Winery is an Italian-styled winery located on a beautiful property. If you’re following along with this itinerary, this will likely be your last stop for the day.

Be confident in your decision – Grape Creek Vineyards has snatched up over 100 medals over the years with their wines. Done up in a Tuscan-themed architectural style, the buildings on the property are primarily made of stone with classic red roofs. Prices vary depending on when you visit. Weekday tastings are $12, while Saturdays and holidays are $15.

Try the Bellissimo and the Cabernet & Syrah blend.

10587 E U.S, US-290, Fredericksburg, Texas

(830) 644-2710

Some of our staff recently visited Fall Creek and had an incredible time! Staff Writer Jacqueline Coleman explains what you can expect:

“On an average warm, sunny Hill Country day, you will find guests sitting all around the garden-style property in Driftwood, just outside of Austin, sipping on Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay , or perhaps a Tempranillo. The tasting room inside has a homely comfort about it, complete with a fireplace and TV for football-watching. This is Texas, after all, and football is king, so it only makes sense that a winery owned by two University of Texas alums would have a TV for Saturday games.

Out on the back porch of the charming country house-converted-into-winery, tables are spaced out for groups to sit and wait for a table-side tasting, which has been the program since the beginning for tastings at Fall Creek Vineyards’ Driftwood location. Guests can sit and order wine from the tasting list, which is then brought to them as they enjoy the scenery of the Texas Hill Country landscape around the property from the comfort of their seats on the porch.”

18059 Farm to Market Rd 1826, Driftwood, Texas

(512) 858-4050

True innovators in the Texas wine industry, William “Bill” Blackmon and Chris Brundrett created William Chris Vineyards in 2008. Since that time, it’s exploded in popularity. Not just within Texas Hill Country, but around the United States as well. Chris and Bill focus on minimal impact viticulture that creates high-impact wine. Their property offers a gorgeous tasting room and relaxing outdoor setting, with live music on Sunday. Chris Brundrett was just recognized as one Wine Enthusiast’s “Producers That are Redefining American Wine”

10352, US-290, Hye, Texas

(830) 998-7654

For a somewhat removed and boutique experienced in the northeastern corner of Hill Country, definitely consider a stop by Spicewood Vineyards. This charming vineyard atmosphere will appease those who want to kick back and relax on a patio for the afternoon. Be sure to try their Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Syrah alongside their cheeseboard. This is also a pet-friendly and kid-friendly winery, so don’t be shy to bring along the family. It’s also a frequently talked-up wedding venue.

1419 Co Rd 409, Spicewood, Texas

(830) 693-5328

Duchman Family Winery: Add Either a First or Last Stop

Depending on where you leave from in Austin, if you have a little extra time or would rather split your Hill Country wine experience between both Fredericksburg and Driftwood (about 30 minutes Southeast of Fredericksburg), head on downtown Duchman Family Winery to enjoy their beautiful stone tasting room and very friendly staff. The Duchman property is beautiful, but this winery also has an Italian restaurant conveniently located next to the tasting room.

The majority of wine produced at Duchman is Italian and the tastings are by far the most affordable in the area. Try the Aglianico , our favorite on the menu!

13308 Ranch to Market Rd 150, Driftwood, Texas

(512) 858-1470

when was this article written and posted??? Isn’t time the most important piece of info?

Arguably, you left the BEST Texas Winery off this list. I sorta see why – you limited yourself to the touristy 290 region – and I guess for purposes of this article, I guess that’s understandable. But the BEST Texas Winery is just north of 290 off Park Road 4 outside of Burnet – Perissos Vineyard and Winery has by far the best wines in Texas. They are like most Texas wineries, you have to go there to get the wine!!! {PS: You can blame THAT on the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission!!}. Salud!!!

Customer Reviews

I had no idea that wine country in Texas was so amazing! The wines are really good and the people are down to earth and friendly. Hiring a driver was awesome because I had no idea where to go, wasn't familiar with the area and everyone that wanted to go also wanted to drink. It made for a safe and worry free day. We had been on a wine tour with Wine Tour Pros at their other location in Napa and loved it. They told us about Texas wine country and we knew we had to check it out. They are really different from each other as expected and enjoyable in different ways. The Texas Wine Collective is one place we went where you could taste a great variety of wines. Hye Meadow Winery was our favorite stop of the day. The wines are fantastic and the chill vibe and attentive staff made us feel special during out visit. They had a lot of local there too which is a good sign. They have great sandwiches and cheese boards too. Our driver made sure we stayed hydrated with waters and made great conversation about the area. It's surprising how much development is happening in the Fredericksburg area. Really cool stuff going on and it's really up and coming. I will definitely go back again to explore more vineyards.

This Epic Texas Road Trip Visits Underrated Vineyards and Rolling Hills Blanketed in Bluebonnets

Texas Hill Country is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Lone Star State, and its impressive wine scene is only growing.

Mariah Tyler is Travel + Leisure's associate visuals director. She is a photographer and writer who covers Texas, Mexico, desert and city destinations, and design-forward hotels. She also commissions photo essays that highlight diverse voices in travel and unique cultural experiences.

wine tour texas hill country

From early spring well into early winter, there is always a great time to take a weekend trip through Texas Hill Country — home to some of the most stunning landscapes in Texas.

This vast, rural region of south-central Texas is conveniently close to all major cities. Its rolling hills are only an hour-long drive from Austin and San Antonio and a four-hour jaunt from Dallas and Houston. You will not have an easier day trip in the largest continental state in the country.

The hills dotted with sprawling cypress and oak trees make for an idyllic road trip route that's especially picturesque in spring and fall. Some of the lushest fields of bluebonnets bloom in spring, and there's nothing more Texan than a bluebonnet photograph .

The main attraction of the region is no longer a secret — Texas Hill Country has become widely known as Texas Wine Country. In fact, Texas is the fifth-highest wine-producing state and is home to the fifth-highest number of wineries, according to data from WineAmerica.org . Texas wine isn't new, but it is rapidly growing, and the quality is only getting better as growers perfect the grapes that do best in the rocky Texas soil.

There are a few noteworthy towns along Highway 290, better known as the Texas Wine Trail, where you will find numerous vacation rentals and historic hotels. Some newer and noteworthy rental accommodations to book are Honey Tree Farm for a real treehouse experience, A-Frame Ranch for tucked-away luxury cabins, and Blue Skies Retro Resort for incredibly fun vintage trailer stays. For a true luxury experience with zero hassle, book a stay at La Cantera Resort & Spa , a Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards winner outside of San Antonio, and their concierge will plan a wine country tour day trip for you.

When it comes to touring wineries, there are bus and limousine tours, of course, but for a more intimate experience, designate a driver to achieve the real road trip vibe. (Drivers should be weary of the abundant deer population along the roadway.) From Dripping Springs to Fredericksburg, the wineries and distilleries are in such abundance, planning can quickly become overwhelming for the first-timer.

The best route to choose is based on wine preference, notable wineries, and approximate distance to your booked accommodation. The Texas Vintners Cup is a solid start for selecting award-winning wineries.

Lost Draw Cellars and Slate Theory Winery are in Fredericksburg and offer tastings by reservation. Out on the wine trail, in Hye, Texas, William Chris Vineyards boasts panoramic views of Hill Country from its stunning modern welcome center and Hye Society Wine Club. The new building opened in 2019, and the wine tastings in the library offer a delectable crash course in Texas wines. From learning about the best Texas-grown grapes to sampling the best vintages available, the expert-guided tasting is a valuable experience.

Back in the town of Fredericksburg, take a stroll down Main Street, where you can sip wine and beer while you shop. With a long history of German influence, Otto's German Bistro is the best place in town for a Texas German dinner. For the brunch lovers, Hill & Vine offers a unique brunch menu with black-eyed pea hummus and peachy pecan pancakes. Short on time and need a bite to go? Hye Market and Deli has delicious sandwiches, perfect for lunch in between tastings.

Nature enthusiasts can experience Pedernales Falls State Park and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area — each one has options for anyone who loves to hike, swim, and even ride on horseback. Texas Hill Country, with its winding roads and hilly vistas of live oak trees and prickly pear, is one of the most scenic places in the Lone Star State and offers some of the best wines east of California.

Exploring Texas Hill Country Wineries with a Map

With over 50 wineries scattered throughout the beautiful Texas Hill Country, it can be overwhelming to decide where to begin your wine tasting adventure. Luckily, with the help of a map, you can easily navigate through the winding roads and taste some of the best wines Texas has to offer.

The Texas Hill Country is a unique viticultural area with a hot and dry climate that is ideal for growing grapes. This region is known for producing award-winning wines such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. Each winery has its own unique style, story, and range of wines to taste.

One of the most popular wine trails in the Texas Hill Country is the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290. This 45-mile wine trail features some of the most renowned wineries in Texas and is conveniently located near the charming town of Fredericksburg.

According to Bryan Hargrove, the owner of William Chris Vineyards, Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 is a great way to get a taste of what Texas has to offer. \”Many people don\’t realize the quality of wine that is being produced in Texas. This wine trail provides an opportunity to experience the unique terroir and flavors that can only be found in this region.\”

If you\’re looking for a more personalized experience, some wineries offer guided tours and private tastings. At Messina Hof Hill Country Winery, visitors can take part in a wine and chocolate pairing or a barrel tasting.

\”Our private tours and tastings give our guests a behind-the-scenes look at how we make our wine,\” says Karen Bonarrigo, co-owner of Messina Hof Hill Country Winery. \”We want to provide an intimate experience that leaves a lasting impression on our visitors.\”

For those looking to expand their wine knowledge, the Texas Hill Country offers several educational opportunities. The Texas Wine School, located in Austin, offers classes on wine tasting, grape varietals, and wine regions. Vineyards such as Pedernales Cellars offer wine seminars on topics such as food pairing and the aging process.

Section 2: Must-Visit Wineries

While every winery in the Texas Hill Country is unique and worth a visit, there are a few that stand out above the rest. One of the most popular is Becker Vineyards, located in Stonewall. Becker is known for its award-winning wines and picturesque lavender fields.

Another must-visit winery is William Chris Vineyards, known for its commitment to sustainable agriculture and its unique tasting room, housed in a renovated 1900s farmhouse.

If you\’re looking for a rustic wine tasting experience, Hye Meadow Winery should be at the top of your list. This family-owned winery is located on a historic ranch and features a cozy tasting room and outdoor patio with stunning views of the surrounding hills.

Section 3: Dining Options in the Texas Hill Country

Wine tasting can work up quite the appetite, and luckily the Texas Hill Country has a number of dining options to satisfy any craving. Fredericksburg boasts a number of restaurants offering German cuisine, such as Otto\’s German Bistro and Altdorf Biergarten.

For those looking for something a bit more upscale, The Creek Restaurant at Texas Hills Vineyard offers a seasonal menu with locally sourced ingredients and stunning views of the vineyard.

Section 4: Planning Your Trip

Before embarking on your Texas Hill Country wine tasting adventure, it\’s important to plan accordingly. Many wineries require reservations for tastings, so be sure to call ahead of time.

It\’s also important to designate a driver or hire a car service to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. The Texas Hill Country is a popular destination, so booking accommodations ahead of time is recommended.

Section 5: Conclusion

The Texas Hill Country is a world-class wine-producing region that offers something for everyone. Whether you\’re a wine enthusiast or just looking for a weekend getaway, the Texas Hill Country has it all – from award-winning wineries to top-notch dining options. So grab a map, plan your route, and get ready to taste the best wines Texas has to offer.

Area for improvement: For the price point I was a bit underwhelmed by the tour. We found out later there was more to see at the espada mission but the tour guide just let us out for 20 minutes without any guidance or direction and just waited in the van. • jh695150 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic, Fabulous, and Fun Words cannot fully describe the experience visiting these four incredible missions. It was an incredible history lesson thanks for our learned guide, Alex, who presented the facts on each mission in an interesting and animated way like a professor who wanted his students to ace the test. Alex spoke about each mission as he drove us to each site and also played an audio tape that gave additional facts. We learned about the history and function of each mission, who the occupants were, along with why they came and why they left. We learned about frescos and construction, and came away with great appreciation for the talents and ingenuity of the Spanish and indigenous people who built and defended them. We were very lucky to happen upon a baptism about to happen at the third mission which was pretty cool. Alex drove us safely to each location and knew where every bump in the road was located, enabling him to traverse each without discomfort to the passengers. He also provided us with bottled water and at the end, escorted us to the restaurant we expressed interest in, helping us get priority seating. I would take this tour again for sure and hope to have Alex to lead again. Read more Written April 11, 2024

  • vacationsights 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A piece of our history that's been preserved for us all to still experience...wonderful! During our recent visit to San Antonio, we visited the Alamo and the four other UNESCO World Heritage Sites there. We were blown away by how well preserved these early 1700's missions were...particularly the churches. All 4 of the churches are still actively used but they've retained, we were happy to see, their original feel. We didn't opt to go on the organized tours that some local businesses offer. Instead, we just went on our own but still felt like we were able to thoroughly enjoy the whole experience. Read more Written April 6, 2024

Alex G was a great guide - on time, friendly, fun and knowledgeable...couldn't ask for a better guy to spend a tour with. The van was super comfortable, air conditioned (of course!) • S5196IRmichellew 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fun, informative, and relaxing We took this tour on Friday morning, March 29. Some of my photos contain Easter decorations as some of the Missions are operating churches. Our guide was amazing. We asked questions about the history, the structures and the people: nothing stumped our guide. We learned about the native people as well as the Spanish settlers and the religious orders who founded, occupied and maintained each Mission. There was ample time at each site to take pictures and ask questions specific to the area. We also made several brief stops on route to each site. Our guide pointed out features of the landscape. He also played an audio introduction in the van as we traveled so we knew what to expect at each stop. My husband and I highly recommend this tour. Read more Written April 3, 2024

  • Tonialax 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour! I joined in on this wonderful tour at the last second and I’m so glad that I did. Our tour guide (Alex) was wonderful. He had a lot of great information to share and was very personable. I loved that we were a small group so you didn’t get stuck waiting for a bunch of people to catch up. Just incase this affects your decision based on timing, I was the last person picked up for the tour at 8:20ish. So even though the start time of the tour is advertised as 9:00am, we were at our first mission by 8:40 and I was dropped off at my hotel at noon. Don’t hesitate to take this tour, it was so convenient being driven to each site and getting additional information than what was provided at the sites. Alex did also offer water to anyone who needed it, so they are prepared with that as well. Read more Written March 23, 2024

The Best Wineries & Wine Tours in Texas Hill Country

We are sure you are familiar with the best spots to sip a glass of wine near your hometown. Maybe it’s in the lively ambiance of your local tasting room, the cozy camaraderie of your friend’s deck, or the solo serenity of your own terrace.

Wherever your favorite hideaway may be, a luxury Texas wine tasting experience can help you discover an entirely new way to enjoy the Lone Star State. Sipping a wine flight of your favorite Rhone-style blends and varietals from Spain and Italy while listening to the peaceful noises of the countryside and admiring the views of Hill Country foliage is a must-do activity. You won’t want to miss a single sip.

It’s easy to let the days slip by without scheduling time to get on Highway 290 and explore Hill Country winery towns like Fredericksburg , Stonewall, or Johnson City. You deserve a break from city living, and the aesthetically gorgeous wineries are just one reason to take a little time for yourself. You won’t have trouble planning an entire weekend’s worth of activities here, including swimming, horseback riding, and wellness experiences.

Below, you’ll find our suggestions on the best wineries to visit, the best blends to try on-site, and how to make your entire getaway a retreat that provides unforgettable moments in immersive natural environments.

What Are the Best Texas Hill Country Wineries?

Just within the space between Austin and San Antonio sits a collection of 50 wineries, each with unique qualities and offers. No matter which winery you choose to visit in Texas’s sprawling wine region, each location is committed to supplying the highest quality wine and providing a top-of-the-line experience for their guests.

Because there are so many wineries to choose from, Hill Country offers a passport program every fall. After registering for a passport, you can enjoy discounts and special access to all 50+ wineries for the entire month. However, if you are just making a trip for a weekend, you may want to narrow down your options to just a few of the area’s most beautiful locales.

Becker Vineyards

Becker Vineyards has been featured on the Fine Living Channel, and their Reception Hall or Wine Cellars is a wonderful example of the luxury you can expect to be surrounded by upon your visit. Their most famous wines are their award-winning Bordeaux and Burgundian, which both can be enjoyed in a wine tasting or as a part of a wine tour.

You can also choose to sip on their extravagant wines while enjoying their options of casual fare like BBQ or fine dining. If you are visiting on a warm night, take your glass of wine out to their patio to admire the grand architecture of the building and enjoy the live music they routinely offer.

Driftwood Estate Wineries

While the Driftwood Estate does not offer wine tours, it does provide unparalleled views of Hill Country. Pick a bottle and your favorite wine pairing, and retreat to the outdoor space to sit amongst impressive oak trees as you watch the sunlight dance across the 18-acre vineyard. There is a wine for every taste here, so be sure to sign up for a wine tasting if you want to expand your palette or experience each of your favorites.

Farmhouse Vineyards

The Farmhouse Vineyards is a family-owned Texas wine country staple that boasts countryside charm and family-grown history. It is owned by a brother and sister, located on a multi-generational family farm. The duo manages 112 acres of crops that span four different vineyards. When visiting Farmhouse Vineyards, you are choosing wine produced by people who are dedicated to maintaining the charm and quality of Hill Country wine.

When visiting this High Plains winery, you can enjoy wine tastings in their picnic areas or on their patio before playing their lawn games that are scattered around the lovely property.

Spicewood Vineyards

Sitting right on top of 32 acres of vines, Spicewood Vineyards will provide a classic winery experience. They offer over 12 varieties of wine, including fan favorites like Albarino, Merlot, and Tempranillo. Because of the rows of vines’ picturesque backdrop, this is an extremely popular choice for events like weddings and private parties.

Spicewood Vineyards offer both winemaking tours and tastings by reservation, and it offers private tours for the true wine enthusiasts among us.

Texas Hills Vineyard

This namesake vineyard was one of the first wineries in operation in the Hill Country. Based on years of perfecting their wine and serving guests, your experience here is sure to be remarkable. Texas Hills Vineyard was the first to grow Pinot Grigio using Texas grapes, but it is best known for the renowned Cabernet Sauvignon.

Texas Hills Vineyard offers wine tastings so you can try a variety of options, with the option to sip on their patio overlooking 27 acres of grapevines. History is can be felt throughout this winery’s walls, given its impressive landscape and top-notch service.

Wimberley Valley Winery

Wimberley rests in the heart of Hill Country and offers the experiences, charm, and views that characterize the area.

The Wimberley Valley Winery first opened in 1983 and has been a favorite by tourists and locals alike. The winery offers both an indoor and outdoor space. After finishing a wine tasting, you can get a glass of your favorite wine and lay back under the shade of oak trees in their picnic area or cozy up by their fireplace indoors during the colder months.

Other Texas Wineries To Explore

If you still have more time during your food and wine tour of Texas, check out the following additional Texas wineries. Keep an eye out for outstanding Italian and Spanish varietals, and make sure to leave with at least one bottle of wine — maybe a rosé or a syrah — to pair with some charcuterie or give to a friend.

Where Should I Stay in Texas Hill Country?

After spending a day leisurely sipping award-winning wine and enjoying the stunning landscape, spend the night a truly unique retreat with high-end outdoor accommodations right in Wimberley.

Summit Tent

Our most popular option for Hill Country stays is our Summit Tent, a luxury retreat that allows you to benefit from all of the amenities of modern life in the beautiful natural center of our home state.

For the best night of sleep after a long day of sipping delicious wine, fall back on a king bed made with plush duvets, 1500-count linens, and rich, woven textiles that reflect the charm and classic look of Texas decor.

The Summit Tent features an en suite bathroom that is stocked with spa-quality products, plush bathrobes, and a wood-burning stove to keep your retreat comfortable and warm.

Our Family Suite and Honeymoon Suite additions allow you to have additional space for your children or a more private and romantic evening.

Other Hill Country Activities

Once you realize the benefits of extending your winery day trip to a weekend-long exploration of Hill Country, you may be ready to enjoy one of the many other experiences Hill Country has on offer.

Horseback Riding

To experience Hill Country as your fellow Texans have for hundreds of years, try horseback riding. As a Collective Retreats guest, you simply have to book a time through our concierge for a two-hour horseback ride through the ranch.

There is no previous experience required, and you will be taken through a brief training and informational session, so you feel confident when you mount your horse. Since the tour is exclusive to Collective Retreats guests, it will be an intimate experience that gives you the opportunity to personalize your ride and immerse yourself in the scenery.

Another wonderful way to explore Hill Country is on foot. There are countless hikes in the area, but Collective Retreats makes the decision-making process easier since there are two trails right on the ranch.

The Canyon Ranch trail is a loop that will take you alongside East Canyon for most of the journey. The midway point of this trail is an extraordinary lookout point that overlooks Hill Country. The Wade Trail is a much shorter trail that walks along the center of the canyon, giving you a one-of-a-kind view down the canyon and beyond.

Grab a gourmet Collective Explorer’s Lunch to take with you on your adventure, or grab a bite before you head out with our Farm to Ranch Breakfast that reflects the best local provisions in the area.

If you are craving a restorative activity to add to your itinerary, be sure to sign up for our daily morning yoga sessions. Designed to strengthen your muscles while centering your mind and relaxing your body, yoga and pilates combine for a unique outdoor flow that’s accessible to all levels of practice.

The yoga sessions are held outside as you immerse yourself in the backdrop of beautiful rolling hills as you stretch. To top the experience off, our Chef will provide homemade green juice once you are finished for a feel-good start to your day.

Sip and Explore

It’s time to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend some time exploring the hidden gems that sit right around you. Less than an hour’s drive away, you can soak in the beauty of Texas Hill Country while sipping on your favorite wine before returning to a warm temporary home at Collective Retreats.

Although they have multiple tasting room locations, their Fredericksburg location is the one I’m most familiar with.

They offer a quiet and spacious room with knowledgeable service provided by their staff, but don’t be shy to check out their Burnet or San Saba locations as well and sip on a refreshing glass of one of their handcrafted wines.

Lost Draw Cellars

Address: 1686 US-290, Johnson City, TX, 78636

From sourcing their grapes from the TX High Plains to delivering enticing tastings in their new Johnson City location, founder Andrew Sides’s passion for winemaking has only grown like the grapes on his uncle’s farm he tended in his youth.

Their first vintage was produced in 2012, and doors opened in 2014, making Lost Draw one of the newer Hill Country wineries. I recommend their 2019 Albarino with its notes of orange blossoms, Meyer lemons, and lilies while food pairing it with a rich Manchego cheese and dried sausage. Take a bottle home to enjoy a glass of wine with family and friends.

Texas Wine Auction uncorks third year of local wines and chefs in the Hill Country

Texas Wine Auction

The Texas Wine Auction has already raised more than $375,000 in its previous two years.

Opening a bottle of wine is always exciting, but getting that bottle at an auction gives it another layer of mysterious flavor. Knowing that purchase fuels the wine industry and medical care for its workers? That's a divine drink.

The Texas Wine Auction makes this all possible for its third year on May 4 at Carter Creek Winery and Resort in Johnson City. The Hill Country town is seated right at the start of "Texas Wine Country," about as close as you can get to Austin while still enjoying the dramatic change in pace — and fantastic wines.

This year, there are 31 participating wineries like Becker Vineyards, High Gun, and William Chris Vineyards as leading partners. Other locally popular names include Lost Draw, Pedernales Cellars, and Wine for the People. Items for auction have not been shared yet, but will include not just rare wines, but also travel and other experiences. Shy buyers can participate in a silent auction, or bolder ones are free to wave their paddles around.

The auction website lays out some impressive stats: The industry and its 443 wine producers have a $20.35 billion impact on the state's economy, have paid $6.91 billion in wages, and have influenced more than 2 million tourist visits. Despite its dryness, Texas is the 5th largest wine producing state.

Wine workers are inarguably valuable, but anyone who's worked in food or beverage knows the industry can be the Wild West. Many employees, according to a press release, are working hourly at multiple jobs. Similar auction events are common in food and wine, and selling a valuable collector's product for money back into better structure for both the businesses and their workers can be a win-win-win.

Last year's event featured a competition between eight chefs, all working with different wine pairings. So far, there is no mention of another competition, but five chefs are listed as general participants, including faces from Garrison Brothers and Albert Hotel, a joint venture between influential Austinites Michael Fojtasek and Amanda Rockman.

The auction, with nonprofit partner Texas Wine Revolution, hopes to apply grants to Hill Country service providers making an impact in "general health and mental awareness"; fund research and education via Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; and increase general awareness of the area's wine prowess. So far, it has raised more than $375,000.

Two main initiatives are overseeing these aims. First, Texas Wine Revolution joins qualified sliding scale mental health provider Frontera Healthcare in a collaboration called Wellness Uncorked. Next, a new pilot program will follow participants from the hospitality industry over six months at the Perry and Ruby Stevens Wellness Center, about half an hour away. This program is more about physical health: cardiovascular, exercise, and nutrition.

Long-term effects may be difficult to measure after only two years, but this promising event is settling into its mission and wine lovers are walking away with something tasty to represent their support.

Individual tickets ($200) and eight-person tables ($2,000) are available via CausePilot . There is also an option to donate more than the ticket price.

toast the tastemakers

Austin chefs, mixologists, and more cheer each other on at the tastemaker awards.

Of course most restaurant and bar staff want some recognition from the public, but evenings like yesterday's really highlight how special it is to get industry people together to cheer each other on.

CultureMap's 2024 Tastemaker Awards rounded up chefs, mixologists, and other representatives from the city's best restaurants and bars to celebrate each other's achievements and choose the top in each class. Best of all, these nominees were chosen by a team of industry experts — mostly last year's winners — ensuring that these accolades really represent the interior industry. One special category, Best New Restaurant, was voted by fans.

Attendees celebrate Canje's win with Rising Star Chef nominee Harvard Aninye (left center, in gold sleeves).

Since February, CultureMap has been getting readers acquainted with the nominees in an editorial series that will live on for slow nights when Austinites can't decide where to eat. Armed with that knowledge, industry folks and the public alike gathered at Distribution Hall to hear the winners announced.

Guests got to taste innovative bites from 15 nominees, plus mixed drinks from a sponsor-supported open bar. 8th Wonder Cannabis brought THC seltzer; Flor de Caña Rum and Tito’s Handmade Vodka supplied their spirits; and Ritual Zero Proof and Topo Chico provided non-alcoholic options. Reservations app Tock was also a sponsor.

Raw fish and sushi were popular last night. Watertrade (Bar of the Year nominee) brought "tiny onigiri" with uni (sea urchin) miso butter, lotus root furikake, and chili ponzu. Honey Moon Spirit Lounge (Best Patio nominee) brought a vibrant aguachile, and Bill's Oyster (Best New Restaurant nominee) brought a tart scallop ceviche. Eberly (Restaurant of the Year nominee) and Gràcia Mediterranean (Best New Restaurant nominee) both brought crudos — each with a unique twist.

Ramen Tatsu-ya (Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year nominee) switched things up with a "deviled agitama sando," essentially combining the idea of a soy-marinated egg and a Southern deviled one. NG Cafe also brought sandwiches — open-faced bánh mì with deliciously tender pork belly — and plenty of extra bread to hand out. Margarita Kallas-Lee of Wolf & Wheat stunned guests with the most unexpected bite of all: smoked banana ice cream sandwiches on brown butter brioche cookies with a caviar bump.

When it was time to announce the winners, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema founder Tim League took the stage as the night's emcee. Asking the excited crowd to hold their applause, he never stood a chance; but reversing his decision, he pushed on through roaring adulation from the many supporters around the room.

Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel of Birdie's was named Chef of the Year, while Sarah McIntosh of Épicerie cooked up the Pastry Chef of the Year award. Holiday and Jester King Brewery won Bar of the Year and Best Brewery, respectively.

Then, three diverse restaurants scored in the restaurant categories. Birdie's was celebrated as 2024's Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year. The Poeta team looked on with suspense and phone cameras at the ready as they found out they won Best New Restaurant. Cosmic Saltillo , located just a two-minute walk away, snagged the wildcard category for Best Patio.

Lastly, Canje scored biggest award of the evening: Restaurant of the Year. Rising Star Chef nominee Harvard Aninye, who read about our admiration of his outfit last year (hey, thanks for reading!), matched his efforts this year and helped accept the award in a cool new ensemble. Read more about the winners here .

CultureMap offers abundant congratulations to the winners and our thanks to the sponsors, participants, and attendees for coming. We can't wait to celebrate with y'all again next year.
