Etihad Airways wins hat-trick at the final of the World Travel Awards 2023

• Etihad wins big at the global edition of the World Travel Awards: Best Customer Experience, Best Economy Class and Best First Class Lounge

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Etihad Airways is celebrating a hat-trick in the grand final of the World Travel Awards which took place at the iconic Burj Al Arab in Dubai on Friday night.

The UAE’s national airline, Etihad, was awarded the world’s leading airline for customer experience recognising the genuine, warm Emirati inspired hospitality offered by Etihad’s cabin crew. Whether travelling in Economy, Business, First or Etihad’s exclusive three-room suite in the sky, The Residence, Etihad’s guests enjoy a design-led inflight cabin environment with comfortable seating, delicious food, extensive entertainment and thoughtful service.

Etihad was also recognised as having the best Economy class in the world, for its leading Economy Smart seat which features the signature fixed wing headrest for added comfort. The spacious seats and extensive inflight entertainment powered by Etihad’s E-Box are complemented by free Wi-Fly chat packages for Etihad Guest members and unlimited data for those wishing to purchase Wi-Fi on board.

Etihad recently rolled out a new Economy class menu which is served on its innovative tableware that has been designed in a closed-loop recycling system to eliminate single-use plastic and reduce waste. The tableware features a chic design and is embellished with the Etihad branding to further enhance the overall guest experience.

Etihad’s First class lounge has been recognised as the best in the world at this year’s awards. Tanzanian parks, hotels, and companies, among others, received high recognition at the WTA, which was hosting its 30th edition of the awards.

Dar es Salaam . Tanzania won a total of eight titles in the Africa category of the World Travel Awards (WTA) during an Africa & Indian Ocean Gala ceremony held on October 16 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Among the winners were Serengeti National Park, which was recognized as Africa's leading national park, winning it for the fifth time in a row.

Other categories Tanzania won are: Leading Tourist Attraction (Ngorongoro Conservation Area), Leading Tourist Board (Tanzania Tourist Board), Leading Tour Operator (Zara Tours), Leading Luxury Island (Thanda Island), Leading Luxury Tented Safari Camp (Siringiti Serengeti Camp), Leading New Resort (Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa), and Responsible Tourism Award (Twiga Tours).

From top-tier comfort and cleanliness to the best customer service and family-friendly facilities, we've rounded up a selection of the winners from last year's Skytrax's World Airline Awards 2023. World’s Most Improved Airline: Kuwait Airways

World’s Cleanest Airline: ANA All Nippon Airways

ANA (All Nippon Airways) is one of the most consistently high-rated airlines both in Asia and worldwide. It picked up the World’s Cleanest Airline award for the third year in a row in 2023, while also holding onto its 2022 crown for the World’s Best Airport Services. Founded in 1952, Japan’s largest airline – although not the national carrier – is one of the most significant airlines in Asia, operating 43 international and  61 domestic routes.

The airline focuses on an excellent in-flight experience infused with hints of Japanese culture. It provides passengers with amazing amenities, food, cleanliness and friendly cabin crew. After two years of tough COVID-19 restrictions, Japan resumed visa-free entry and independent travel in October 2022 – and it looks like ANA is rising to the occasion.

World's Best Regional Airline: Bangkok Airways

As well as bagging the Best Regional Airline in Asia award, Bangkok Airways took home first place for the World’s Best Regional Airline. It might not come as a surprise: it's the seventh consecutive year the airline has won both awards. It serves 11 Thai hotspots and a growing number of international destinations, including Cambodia, Singapore, the Maldives, Myanmar, Hong Kong and Laos.

Bangkok Airways comprises a 30-strong fleet, with each aircraft decorated in their own liveries representing the destinations they fly to. The company's latest generation aircraft, the ATR72-600, includes a full-glass cockpit and larger overhead bins. 

Best Regional Airline in North America: Alaska Airlines

World’s Best Low-Cost Airline: AirAsia

This reliable airline has been awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Airline since 2010 and is well-recognised by other industry heavyweights for its budget offerings. The Premium Flatbed seat on its Airbus A330 is considered among the world’s best-value premium cabins, being fully reclinable with adjustable head and foot rests, plus comfy bedding and a privacy screen. Complimentary meals, priority boarding and baggage collection, and access to hours of inflight entertainment are included in the cost too.

The Malaysia-based airline operates flights across its home continent and beyond, with connections to Australia, the US, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Japan and more. Sign up for the rewards scheme and you can earn AirAsia points on whatever fare you choose, which can then be redeemed against hotels, tours, car hire and even future flights.

World's Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline: Scoot

Scoot, owned by the Singapore Airlines Group, has been awarded first place for budget travellers seeking long-haul destinations for two consecutive years now. The airline's economy class offers three fares: Fly, FlyBag and FlyBagEat. The cheapest fare is Fly, allowing carry-on of up to 10kg (22 pounds) per passenger; FlyBag includes 20kg (44-pound) checked baggage; and FlyBagEat adds on a hot meal.

But there's another reason everyone's talking about Scoot. In September 2022, it launched its first Pokémon-themed plane (pictured). The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (or "Pikachu Jet"), with its colourful livery and Japanese-inspired menu, serves selected journeys between Singapore, Taipei, Nanjing, Tokyo and Seoul throughout 2023.

World’s Most Family Friendly Airline: Air Canada

Skytrax’s Most Family Friendly Airline Award is a new category for 2023, factoring in how well an airline accommodates families being seated together, how helpful staff are, what dedicated family check-in, baggage and boarding procedures are in place, and the quality of children’s meals, entertainment and amenities. As well as making the lives of guardians and children that little bit easier while in the air, Air Canada also runs the Aeroplan Family Sharing scheme, where up to eight family members can share rewards points.

Best Airline in South America: LATAM

The largest airline in Latin America, LATAM won big across Skytrax's South America categories in 2023, taking gold for both Best Airline and Best Airline Staff Service on the continent. The airline serves Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

So what makes LATAM so great? The airline is addressing its sustainability credentials and has pledged to eliminate all single-use plastics onboard its services by the end of this year. It also aims to be zero-waste by 2027 and carbon neutral by 2050. Plus, its range of LATAM Airlines credit cards could see you earn up to 40,000 miles to redeem on flights.

Best Airline in Africa: Ethiopian Airlines

Not only did Ethiopian Airlines rank in the top 40% of Skytrax's list of the best 100 airlines in the world in 2023, but it was also crowned the Best Airline in Africa once again after winning the category for five previous years. The flag carrier of Ethiopia was founded in 1945 and today serves 19 domestic and 114 international destinations. The airline has the youngest and newest fleet across the entire continent, consisting of Boeing's Dreamliners and Triple Sevens as well as Airbus A350s.

There’s a range of cabin types – economy includes complimentary drinks and its luxury Cloud Nine service provides a curated business-class experience. Guests of Cloud Nine can enjoy exclusive lounge access, additional baggage allowance and an even comfier flight with more room to stretch out.

Best Airline in Europe: Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines was founded in 1933 with just five aircraft. Today, it flies to 269 destinations around the world, best summed up by its tag line: “We fly to more countries than any other airline in the world". The national carrier won the sought-after Best Airline in Europe award, as well as the same award for services in Southern Europe.

The airline offers an incredible culinary service – winning the top award for best catering in both business and economy class in 2023 – and its highly regarded lounge welcomes travellers in Istanbul. It’s regularly commended for being the best long-haul travel experience in Europe, and also serves Africa, North America and Asia.

Best Airline in North America: Delta Air Lines

According to Skytrax, Delta Air Lines is the top airline in North America for the second consecutive year. The accolades don’t stop there – the US-owned airline dominated the major North America categories, taking Best Airline Staff Service, Best Business Class, Best Premium Economy Class and Best Economy Class. It’s one of the world’s oldest airlines and is constantly expanding its network, adding London Gatwick to its roster in 2023 for the first time in 15 years.

But what makes it worth flying with? From check-in to landing there’s a seamless system; its Airport Curbside service (at most US airports) allows you to check in your baggage as soon as you’ve exited your vehicle at passenger drop-off. Its cabins range from Basic Economy to Delta One, where you can enjoy your own flat-bed seat, luxury skincare products and chef-curated meals.

World’s Best Airline Overall: Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines knocked 2022’s Airline of the Year Qatar Airways (a seven-time champion) off the top spot to second place this year, though the Middle Eastern carrier still cleaned up in the majority of the business-class categories. The Singapore Airlines Group (which includes the award-winning budget subsidiary airline, Scoot) ferried nearly 21 million passengers across the world last year and achieved its highest-ever monthly passenger load factor in December 2022. This Hotel in Istanbul Was Just Voted the Best in the World — Here's What It's Like to Stay

Any hotel can host you in a destination, but an extraordinary one will immerse you in the local culture right from the jump. The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, voted the best hotel in the world by our readers in this year’s World’s Best Awards , sits firmly in the latter. 

“This recognition is an incredible honor for our team in Sultanahmet and across Four Seasons, further solidifying our position as luxury hospitality leaders. This exceptional property reflects our enduring commitment to personalized service and exemplary quality – all grounded in the genuine heart of our people,” Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told Travel & Leisure about winning the remarkable accolade. 

Right from its curbside entrance at Tevkifhane Street, the hotel is indeed a special one. Upon exiting my cab on a warm fall day, I got to experience this particular brand of magic for myself, determined to make the most of my short weekend getaway to Istanbul — and luckily for me and all the hotel guests, the towering neoclassical yellow building sits just a short walk from some of Istanbul’s most famous sites. But we’ll get into that in a minute because the building deserves to be this story's star. 

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

• The beds here are unlike any we’ve ever experienced.

• The spa’s hammam experience will leave your skin feeling like a baby’s bottom.

This particular building hasn’t always been a destination people want to check into. Built in 1918, it began as a guest house only to be quickly transformed into the Ottoman Empire's first jailhouse, a convenient destination next to the local courthouse. Even the street names give away its history — Tevkifhane translates to “detainee,” while the street around the corner from the front door, where prisoners were released, is named Kutlugün, meaning “happy day.” 

Political prisoners were often housed here, including novelist Orhan Kemal, who wrote Ward 72 while imprisoned. The jail eventually closed in 1969; however, following the 1980 coup, it was reopened for a short time as a military jail before falling into disrepair until 1996, when the Four Seasons took over. But the brand has made sure not to forget the building and the area’s extraordinary past. 

“The property itself is a marvel, and the thoughtful enhancements of its century-old Turkish neoclassical architecture have ushered in its next chapter, creating new opportunities for our guests to discover Istanbul from our very special hotel at the heart of the city’s Old Town,” Reynal said. “From Sultanahmet and beyond, our teams will continue to shine bright by building lasting connections with our guests and bringing the very best travel experiences to life.”

Not only did the Four Seasons brand work meticulously to preserve elements of the building in the mid-'90s, it did so again in 2022, when it emerged from a two-year renovation project, pulling in even more of Turkey’s gorgeous style into every room. “Our designers researched styling, pattern, and details from antiques, fabrics, and architecture and distilled these influences through a contemporary filter to create designs that feel completely in tune with the building and setting,” Martin Goddard of the design studio Goddard Littlefair, shared in a statement following the unveiling. 

Indeed, every inch of this space feels not only aligned with its surroundings but a part of them. Despite being next door to some of the most visited sites in the nation, it still provides guests with all the peace, quiet, and privacy they’d want. 

Upon check-in, I was whisked directly to my premiere room. Though the hotel’s smallest room category, it still clocked in at 645 square feet, larger than most New York City apartments. Everything about it felt plush — from the entry couch to the upholstered chairs around a small dining table for any in-room meals, the Turkish Kilim textiles hanging on the walls, and, of course, the overstuffed bed that sat like a cloud, ready to envelop weary travelers. However, I wasted no time lying down, instead doing what all guests at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet should do: swing open the windows. 

My room happened to open up to the dazzling and verdant courtyard below, sectioned off with intentional style to include garden space, lounge, and dining spaces, which can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner thanks to the Avlu Restaurant — think Anatolian mezze plates; erişte pasta made with chives, spiced walnut, sautéed asparagus; and lamb tander smothered in a gorgeous tomato sauce with sheep cheese, oregano, chili flakes, sumac, and yogurt. Though the food here is undoubtedly fabulous, do make sure to head a few floors up for sunset. 

Resting atop the hotel sits Süreyya, its rooftop bar that comes with the bonus of the breathtaking Hagia Sofia Grand Mosque as the backdrop, making it the perfect place to transition from day to night with a craft cocktail in hand, like its Sultan Martini, made with vodka, passion fruit, yuzu juice, and vanilla syrup. Those feeling peckish while looking at the view can order small plates, salads, sandwiches, a sweet treat, or a cheese and honey plate stacked with Anatolian cheeses. 

However, there was one destination in the hotel that I couldn’t experience — but you now can. That is the Kurna Spa, offering traditional Turkish hammam rituals on its massive slate gray marble stones surrounded by colorful blue and soft green Turkish tiles, alongside a full menu of massages and facials. 

Though I didn’t get to see the spa during my stay, I could still explore so much more thanks to the hotel’s privileged position steps from the Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, about a 15-minute walk away. There, I filled my bags with jewels, sweet-smelling spices, and tiny trinkets to remember my trip by. I also purchased two large rugs from a local supplier. Unsure of how I’d get them back to the hotel, the merchant asked where I was staying, and I couldn't even get the hotel's full name out before he said they’d be delivered to my room within an hour. And true to his word, they were there upon my return, speaking to how stellar this hotel’s relationships are within the area. 

The hotel, without question, deserves all the praise heaped upon it for the food and drink (worthy of a visit alone), the decor that roots you firmly in Istanbul, but most of all, because it is so utterly welcoming to all that walk through its door, setting a standard for hospitality that few can match. And the view most certainly doesn’t hurt either. 

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet offers 65 luxurious rooms across several categories, including deluxe, premiere, and superior rooms and eight suites. Every room includes a seating area, a dining table, and an over-the-top fluffy bed. Guests can maximize their stay by booking the Beyzade Suite, a bi-level suite offering sweeping views thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street below. 

The hotel offers guests plenty of choices when it comes to their meals. Guests can book a fine dining experience at Avlu, its outdoor restaurant located in the courtyard, or inside at its elevated Lingo Lingo Bar and Restaurant. Hamad International Airport has experienced significant growth in the past decade, with the integration of lifestyle and shopping facilities including Orchard, an indoor garden with a bridge.

In 2023, it enjoyed a 31 per cent increase in passenger traffic, serving over 45 million passengers over 250 destinations.

Second-place winner Singapore Changi Airport – which won the world's best airport award in 2023 – also clinched the titles of best airport in Asia and world’s best airport immigration service. Crowne Plaza Changi Airport was also named world’s best airport hotel, for the ninth time.

Operating since 1999, Skytrax's World Airport Awards are voted by airport customers of over 100 nationalities. The survey evaluates customers' experience across multiple factors including check-in, transfers, shopping and security. This year's survey was conducted between August 2023 and March 2024, and over 570 airports were featured in the survey results.

All entries for the survey are screened, with duplicate or ineligible entries deleted, and no membership subscription or charges are needed to participate in the survey.

Nonetheless, Skytrax has received some criticism over the years with one report in 2015  from a travel industry news site suggesting that the organisation had inflated the figures of its survey participants. Skytrax also received backlash in 2019 after it updated the ratings of certain airlines, including downgrading Turkish Airlines to three stars – prompting those in the aviation community to question Skytrax's ranking methods.
