rickie fowler pga tour wins

DETROIT (AP) — Rickie Fowler tilted his head back, exhaled and smiled.

He finally did it, holding on for a win after so many have slipped away.

Refusing to crumble and collapse again, Fowler made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole of the Rocket Mortgage Classic and outlasted Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin on Sunday, two weeks after squandering a chance at the U.S. Open.

“It’s just nice to have this one out of the way,” Fowler said after winning for the first time in four years. “I’m obviously going to soak this one in and celebrate a bit.

“Yeah, it’s just been a long road.”

Fowler ended a career-long, 96-start championship drought after missing out on two chances to win in June, closing with a 75 at the U.S. Open to tie for fifth and with a 69 last week at the Travelers Championship to drop into a tie for 13th.

Followed all day by a sea of orange at Detroit Golf Club, Fowler was knocked down on the leaderboard by a near record-tying-round from Morikawa. He responded on his 72nd hole of the tournament with an approach from 145 feet that left him with a 3-foot birdie putt to pull into a three-way tie with Morikawa and Hadwin at 24 under.

Fowler hit an errant tee shot way right in the playoff and after a drop, his approach from 184 landed 12 feet from the cup. Morikawa was inches long on his approach and instead of having the ball spin back to the hole, it bounced into the rough.

Nelly Korda acknowledges the crowd after her shot on the sixth green during the first round of the Chevron Championship LPGA golf tournament Thursday, April 18, 2024, at The Club at Carlton Woods, in The Woodlands, Texas. (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

“I truly thought I hit the perfect shot,” Morikawa said. “It just was a little juiced, went a little far and just didn’t have the putter in the hand. Not that the chip wasn’t possible, but would have been nice to have the putter in the hand.”

Hadwin missed a 22-foot putt and Morikawa his chip, opening the door for Fowler to close out the tournament before thunderstorms rolled over Detroit.

“I knew it was just a matter of time with how I’ve been playing,” said Fowler, who has eight top-10 finishes this season. “I’ve had a couple tough weekends where I had a chance.”

Even though Morikawa was disappointed in coming up short on a victory he has been shooting for since winning the 2021 British Open, he was happy for Fowler.

“He’s been playing phenomenal golf, it’s great to see,” he said. “People love him.”

Morikawa’s 8-under round put him one shot back from the course record of 63. Hadwin shot a 67 and Fowler a 68.

Fowler had a share of the 54-hole lead last month at Los Angeles Country Club with an opportunity to win his first major and was at least a co-leader after three rounds in one tournament in each of the previous two years.

Before his breakthrough in Detroit, he had won just two of the 10 times he was the third-round leader or co-leader.

The 34-year-old Fowler physically and mentally did what was needed to earn his sixth PGA Tour victory and his first since winning the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The fan favorite Fowler, a longtime ambassador for Rocket Mortgage, was cheered with chants of “Rick-ie! Rick-ie!” as clusters of people gathered around the 18th green hoping he would win it.

While Fowler faltered, going 10 straight holes settling for pars on a relatively easy course, Morikawa had four birdies on both the front and back nine. Morikawa made a 10-foot putt at No. 12, his fourth birdie in a six-hole stretch that put him within a shot of Fowler, and his 9-footer for birdie at No. 14 pulled him into a tie with Fowler at 23 under.

Monday qualifier Peter Kuest (65), Lucas Glover (65) and Taylor Moore (67) were tied for fourth at 21 under. Kuest, who started the week ranked 789th in the world, did well enough to earn a spot in this week’s John Deere Classic in Illinois.

Play was suspended Saturday for 1 hour, 42 minutes because of lightning and the schedule for the final round was adjusted due to inclement weather in the forecast. The leaders teed off Sunday morning about 5 hours before the original schedule with threesomes starting on both the front and back nine.

Rickie Fowler wins Rocket Mortgage Classic in playoff: How he earned first PGA Tour title since 2019

Rickie Fowler edged Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a one-hole playoff Sunday at Detroit Golf Club to win the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The win ends a four-year PGA Tour victory drought for Fowler, marking his first title since 2019.
  • Fowler (-24) won with a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
  • He shot a final-round 68 Sunday with a birdie on 18 to reach the playoff.

The Athletic ’s instant analysis:

How Fowler ended the drought

Fowler had to wait four years, so why not one extra hole? It felt fitting for the 34-year-old to win his first tournament since the 2019 Waste Management in a playoff.

It ended in hugs, but Fowler nearly added another near-miss to his recent tough finish at the U.S. Open. At Los Angeles Country Club, he played in the final group but finished in a tie for fifth. This time, he came skidding to close at Detroit Golf Club, hitting wayward shots down the stretch while others joined him atop the leaderboard.

Morikawa could’ve, and perhaps should’ve, won this. A birdie putt on 18 in regulation missed by the slightest of margins. His closing 64 was nearly a 63 and good enough for an outright win. Instead, he joined Fowler and Hadwin in the playoff.

Replaying the 18th as the first playoff hole, Morikawa hit his drive 322 yards in the center of the fairway. His approach was on line and looked ready to smother the hole. It instead passed the hole, and bounced once in the green side rough before trying to spin back. The ball hung up there, and Morikawa’s day was done.

Fowler, meanwhile, missed multiple opportunities down the stretch before sticking an approach to 3 feet on 18 and closing with a birdie to join the playoff. Back on the 18th tee, he went long right off the tee to start the playoff, finding trampled-down rough. He was given relief and a free drop and proceeded to hit a 180-yard approach to 12 feet.

Rolling in that winning putt, Fowler placed both hands atop his putter and looked into the gray sky above Detroit.

Fowler’s victory is the sixth of his career, but only the third since his two-win season in 2015.

This is a big one for one of the most popular players in professional golf. Fowler’s game had been trending in the right direction, even gaining some Ryder Cup candidacy chatter, but needed a win to mark his return. He’s been asked endlessly in recent years about his drought. Finally, that question is over.

The first thing Fowler said in his news conference?

“It’s nice to have this out of the way.” — Quinn

Fowler entered the final round as the 54-hole leader at 20-under, one shot ahead of Hadwin. Fowler surged atop the leaderboard Saturday with birdies on six of his last eight holes, finishing the third round with an 8-under 64.

Entering Sunday, Fowler was 2-for-10 in his PGA Tour career with the 54-hole lead or co-lead. At the 2023 U.S. Open last month, he shared the lead after 54 holes with Wyndham Clark , but would finish T5 after shooting a 5-over 75 in the final round.

Sunday’s win marks Fowler’s sixth career PGA Tour victory and eighth top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season. This was his 96th start since winning the 2019 Phoenix Open — 95 starts without a victory is the longest drought of his Tour career.

‘It’s been a long road’: Rickie Fowler’s comeback win is special for reasons only he can fully understand

1509661070

Cliff Hawkins

Of all the painful ways to lose a golf tournament, "death by a thousand pars" has to be one of the most torturous. We've seen it most recently and prominently from Rory McIlroy at this year's U.S. Open and last year's Open Championship, and we've seen it from Rickie Fowler on more than one occasion at majors in the past. The phenomenon is exactly what it sounds like: You're not melting down, but you simply can't make enough birdies to win, and par follows par follows par in a slow, frustrating march of failure.

Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, before finally grabbing his first win in nearly four-and-a-half years and punctuating a comeback that has seen him rise into the upper echelons after a sustained slump that brought him as low as 185th in the world late last year, Fowler seemed to be mired in that old familiar morass. And if "death by a thousand pars" makes it tough to win a major, it's an impossible formula for a PGA Tour stop like this one, an unrestrained birdie fest where you only triumph if you confront and dominate Detroit Golf Club four times in a row.

Fowler's start was anything but quotidian, but after three birdies in seven holes, he settled into the familiar slog. An astounding 10 straight pars from holes 8 through 17 took the air out of the Fowler faithful in the gallery, and brought a predictable consequence: the lead he carried into the mid-morning start (tee times were moved up due to a dire afternoon forecast) vanished as he stood on the par-4 18th. The hole had yielded precious few birdies, and now Fowler trailed Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin by a shot. While Fowler had been running in place, Morikawa was in a full sprint, and nearly reached 25 under with a birdie putt on 18 that tantalized and then lipped out. Fowler appeared much like he had at Los Angeles Country Club, his body language telegraphing premature disappointment, and his drive to the intermediate rough on 18, while not a disaster, didn't exactly help.

Then, just when deflation seemed to be the order of the afternoon, Fowler reignited his chances with what has to be one of the most important shots of his career, and certainly the most critical in recent memory. The brilliant approach came entirely against the run of momentum:

With that, Fowler did what he couldn't do at the U.S. Open, which was to conjure the perfect shot at the perfect moment. He later said he felt like his back was to the wall, and when he delivered under those tense circumstances, he was left with a gimme to make the playoff.

Moments later, facing Morikawa and Hadwin at 18 again as the first playoff hole, Fowler seemed to give the impetus right back to his opponents with a slice off the tee, while they hit perfect draws to the left side of the fairway. To his good fortune, though, the grass was tamped down by the gallery, and he had a relatively clean look at the hole. He took advantage, rolling his approach to 12 feet below the hole:

The minute this second approach rolled to a stop, it was like the golf gods decided then and there that he'd been tested enough, and all the difficulties, all the struggles of the past years, evaporated in an instant, and the fates lined up on his side as lightning hovered outside the Detroit area. Hadwin over-spun his approach, leaving a long birdie putt that had the added trouble of giving Fowler a perfect read; Morikawa flew his even easier approach into the back rough and duffed the comeback ship; Fowler, facing down a putt to bury his winless demons, and telling himself to hit it hard enough, tucked it into the right side of the hole .

The brief look skyward, the breath that exhaled 1,610 days of futility just before his caddie Ricky Romano embraced him and the first smile appeared, probably said more than any words could, but Fowler had some good words anyway.

"It's just been a long road," said the now six-time PGA Tour winner. "I'll get emotional at some point, whether it's … in here or when we're heading home or over this next week."

Fowler, 34, seemed to be teary-eyed as he held his 1-year-old daughter Maya in his CBS interview with Amanda Renner, but largely held it together later in front of reporters. He'll head home for a few days now, and then to London for a pre-Open Championship trip with Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and all their wives. But as he spoke Sunday, his mind was drifting to another European event a couple months after Hoylake.

"This was definitely one of the main goals this year was to win," he acknowledged. "Outside of that … one of the end goals was to be a part of the Ryder Cup team, and that's still what we're focusing on right now. Been a part of a handful, and they're very special weeks, so that's where I have my eyes."

1509257977

When asked whether he always had confidence he'd return to the winner's circle, Fowler answered with his usual honesty.

"Not always," he admitted. "You never really know with this game. You definitely learn to appreciate the good times and when you're playing well. Yeah, you hope the struggles don't last, but sometimes they last longer than you would hope for … even when you're playing well, it's not going to last forever."

While Fowler's win will deservedly overshadow almost anything else that happened in Detroit this past week, the surprise resurgence of Morikawa might end up being almost as impactful.

1509621372

Rickie Fowler celebrates with his daughter, Maya, after winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

"Playoffs suck when you're on the wrong side of them," he said bluntly, but the rest of his post-round interview was almost effusively positive. "It's kind of the old Collin hopefully back … I'm in this little lull and this hopefully is just that boost to just get me out of it."

Morikawa will skip the Scottish Open and take more time to practice on the links to prepare for the Open Championship, and will hope that a return to form there and in the FedEx Cup Playoffs rounds out his season in style and perhaps leads to a spot on the Ryder Cup team.

As for Hadwin, if he was disappointed in not winning—he’s now in the midst of a six-plus-year streak himself—you certainly wouldn't be able to tell from his own presser.

"I'm stoked, I'm through the roof right now," he said. "I mean, I got myself into a playoff at the end of the day, that's what you want. You want a chance to win a golf tournament and I guess I kind of had a chance coming up 18, an outside chance. Then I hit two of the best golf shots I've hit all day in a playoff and really even that putt, it just didn't go in. You know, I can take nothing but positives away from this week."

It's a rare tournament when everyone in the top three can feel good, especially after two of them have just lost in a playoff, but something was in the air in Detroit, and positive vibes were the order of the day. The last word belonged to Fowler, who hearkened back to that brief millisecond after the winning putt fell and he seemed to find a kind of quiet oasis; a storm's eye between the stress he'd just endured and the celebrations to come.

"I was kind of just still and quiet and everyone was going crazy around me," he said. "It was a nice moment just to kind of feel like the weight on my shoulders was finally off."

Rocket Mortgage Classic D4

Rickie Fowler ended his four-and-a-half-year winless run on the PGA Tour by snatching a dramatic play-off victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Fowler produced a sensational final-hole birdie to close a bogey-free 68 on the final day at Detroit Golf Club, putting him tied on 24 under alongside Canada's Adam Hadwin and two-time major winner Collin Morikawa.

The players returned to the par-four 18th for the play-off, where Fowler fired his approach to 12 feet and rolled a birdie to claim his sixth PGA Tour victory and first since the WM Phoenix Open in February 2019.

"It's hard to really put it all into words," Fowler said. "Obviously there has been a lot of good stuff this year and I've been playing some really good golf, so I knew it was just a matter of time with how I've been playing."

Fowler took a one-shot lead into the final day after finishing his third round on Saturday with six birdies in his last eight holes, with the 34-year-old continuing to impress by birdieing the par-four third and holing from 45 feet to add another at the fifth.

The American took advantage of the par-five seventh to reach the turn in 33, only to lose momentum with a run of pars and see Morikawa pull level with him after following a front-nine 32 by making three birdies in a five-hole stretch from the 10th.

Morikawa edged ahead by making a 15-foot birdie at the par-five 17th but failed to convert a birdie look at the last, seeing him set the clubhouse target, while Hadwin joined him on 24 under after closing his bogey-free day with two birdies in the last four holes.

Fowler then made it a three-way tie when a sensational approach from the rough at the last set up a close-range birdie, then triumphed in the play-off to claim a first victory in 1,610 days.

Rickie Fowler makes epic birdies to win dramatic Rocket Mortgage Classic in 3-man playoff

Rickie Fowler has his first win since Super Bowl Sunday in 2019.

Fowler, making his 96th start since winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open more than four years ago, sank an 11-foot, 10-inch birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in an epic finish at a soggy final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 at the Detroit Golf Club.

Fowler will earn $1.58 million for his victory Sunday, and Morikawa and Hadwin will each take home $783,200.

It is Fowler's sixth career win on the PGA Tour, but his first since getting married and having his daughter. His caddie, Ricky Romano, jumped up and down and the crowd chanted "Rickie! Rickie!" after his winning putt sank into the cup. He finished at 24-under-par 264 for the tournament along with Morikawa and Hadwin.

"It's just nice to have this one out of the way," Fowler said. "I'm obviously gonna soak this one in and celebrate a bit. It's just been a long road and I'll get emotional at some point."

Fowler celebrated the victory with his wife, Allison and young daughter, Maya, in his arms. He said it was special having them with him on the 18th hole throughout the playoff, even though Maya may not remember it.

He accepted the trophy inside a conference room instead of on the 18th green with adoring fans due to an incoming storm. He thanked the fans for their support all week.

It was the second three-way playoff in the past three tournaments here, with Cam Davis defeating Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann in 2021.

Hadwin and Morikawa both hit the fairway on the first playoff hole, a replaying of No. 18. Fowler blew his drive well to the right, but found some trampled-down grass, making for a decent lie. Then, from 183 yards out, he hit his ball inside 12 feet, the closest of the three despite being the only one to miss the fairway.

Fowler got a read from Hadwin, who was about 10 feet outside of his ball. Hadwin's putt carried too much pace as it touched the hole and chased by. Morikawa was in the rough just over the top of the hole and his chip came up well short.

Fowler forced his way into the playoff with a dramatic birdie on No. 18 in regulation after coughing up the lead. He stuck his approach from 145 yards at the left fringe of the fairway to three feet, three inches. A fan favorite , he was serenaded with chants as he walked up to mark his ball, then sunk the putt after Hadwin made his four-footer for par.

Morikawa, who last won in 2021 at the Open Championship, shot 8-under 64 to rally from four shots behind Fowler, who carded a 68 playing with two Canadians : Hadwin (67) and Taylor Pendrith (73).

Morikawa, playing two groups in front of the leaders, had a 15-foot putt in regulation for a two-shot lead on the 18th hole, but it touched the lip on the high side.

While the field struggled on the 18th, with just 10 birdies there Sunday, Fowler did not. He birdied it three straight times (including Saturday) to take a one-shot lead into the final round.

Fowler was solid until late in the back nine, when he began to slip by making par on both the par-5 14th and 17th. He did not make a birdie after the par-5 seventh until the final hole.

Morikawa hit all 14 fairways and shot up the leaderboard, weathering intermittent spouts of rain as play was moved to 6:45 a.m. from split tees and in threesomes. The leaders teed at 8:55 a.m.

Fowler, wearing his usual Sunday colors of orange and white in honor of his time at Oklahoma State, was clearly the people's champion, drawing the largest crowds of adoring fans that cheered his name at every hole throughout the weekend.

Fowler extended his lead to two strokes with a birdie on the par-4 third. His second stroke set him up for a 10-foot putt that he sank, prompting cheers from a gathering of fans that seemed to grow at each hole.

ACE ALERT: Max Homa makes hole-in-one in final round to turn exasperation into joy

Sneaking up behind Fowler and Hadwin was Morikawa. He shot 4-under 32 on the front nine and birdied the 10th to catapult up three spots into third place at 21-under. His second stroke on the par-4 13th landed just under 10 feet away from the hole and he birdied to tie Hadwin for second place.

The rain intensified as the last groups began their final holes. One stroke separated Fowler, Hadwin and Morikawa, and Adam Schenk, Taylor Moore and Peter Kuest were three behind.

The rain let up as Morikawa birdied the par-5 14th to take a co-lead. Fowler had a chance to go up by two strokes on the 14th with a nearly 70-foot putt up the hill for eagle and lagged to four feet short. Settling for the birdie attempt, the ball had too much speed as it touched the left side of the lip and went long. He made the comebacker to stay tied, and Hadwin also parred, leaving him one back.

Fowler and Morikawa each made three on the par-3 15th, but Hadwin birdied it to create a three-way tie at 23-under.

Morikawa got up to the par-5 17th green in two shots, chipped to inside three feet and birdied to climb to 24-under and knock Fowler from the lead for the first time all day.

Fowler missed the fairway by a few feet on No. 17, pulled his second into the rough short-sided, and could not get up and down. Hadwin birdied it. That set up Fowler's dramatics on the 18th hole, while Hadwin parred to force the three-way playoff.

Stephan Jäeger on Sunday tied the course record with a 9-under 63, the third player to do so this week, following Andrew Landry on Friday and Hadwin on Saturday.

Max Homa, the top-ranked player in the field this week as the World No. 9, made the first ace of the tournament on the 140-yard 15th hole. He finished tied for 21st and 15 under par after tying for 24th a year ago at 12-under.

Rickie Fowler Ends PGA Tour Drought With Dramatic Playoff Win At Rocket Mortgage Classic

The American is finally a PGA Tour winner again, beating Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a playoff in Detroit

Andrew Wright

Rickie Fowler birdied the first playoff hole to win a dramatic Rocket Mortgage Classic and pick up his first PGA Tour title in more than four years.

Not since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open 1,610 days ago had Fowler tasted success but he ended his drought in style to take down Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin at Detroit Golf Club.

Since reuniting with Butch Harmon, the American has rediscovered some of his best form but had failed to turn that into a win, falling short at the US Open after taking a lead into the final round.

This was therefore an important Sunday for Fowler. He began the day one clear and extended his advantage with three birdies in his opening seven holes,  before a run of 10 straight pars left him playing catch-up to Hadwin and Morikawa, who set the clubhouse target at 24-under after a bogey-free 64.

When the pressure was at its most intense, however, Fowler responded, firing an approach shot to three feet on 18 to set up a birdie that forced his way into the playoff.

Sometimes to get over the line you need some good fortune and that's exactly what Fowler got as the trio returned to 18 with lightning incoming. A big right miss landed in the gallery but after taking relief left him with a good lie in the rough and a clear shot to the green.

He took advantage to turn the tables on his opponents before holing from 11 feet to confirm his return to the big time.

An emotional Fowler dedicated the win to his family on the 18th green.

"It's hard to really put into words," Fowler said. "Obviously a lot of good stuff this year and I've been playing some really good golf, so I knew it was just a matter of time with how I've been playing.

"I've had a couple of tough weekends where I've had a chance, you know at the US Open I didn't get it done, but at the end of the day getting to hang with [daughter] Maya and my wife, winning is great but there's a lot more to life than that."

As well as a return to the winner’s circle and the $1.584 million first prize, Fowler is set to vault back into the world’s top 25, having fallen well outside the top 150 at his lowest ebb.

Hello and welcome

Welcome to live coverage from the final round of the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Sunday tee times at Detroit Golf Club have been moved up with inclement weather predicted for later in the day, so the leaders are out imminently.

Everyone is chasing Rickie Fowler, who goes in search of his first PGA Tour title since 2019. It promises to be a thriller on a mammoth Sunday of sport, so strap yourselves in!

Morikawa on the move

Reeling it back in 👀@Collin_Morikawa had this shot dialed @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/osBwkP1Bpm July 2, 2023

Morikawa has already reduced his arrears to three with a birdie at the first. Behind, the final group is out on the course, with Fowler on the green around 30 feet away.

Alongside, Hadwin and Pendrith have good chances at the first from inside 15ft.

Fowler maintains lead

It's pars at the first for the final group, meaning Fowler remains a shot clear of Hadwin.

Morikawa within two

A birdie at the third for Morikawa gets him to -18 and within two of Fowler. The leader is safely aboard the second green and will have a good chance to make his first birdie of the day.

Conditions on the course are very wet but there's no rain falling currently.

Bogey for Pendrith

The Canadian finds the second green in regulation but a costly three-putt drops him back to -17 and three behind Fowler.

Fowler and Hadwin make pars to remain -20 and -19 respectively.

Birdie for Fowler

The Sky Sports coverage has begun, thankfully. In time to report a Rickie Fowler birdie as well. The American is now -21 and two clear of Hadwin.

How Malnati got to -17?

50 feet from the rough 😳@PeterMalnati gets his third birdie of the day @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/1Dz0LGcr6a July 2, 2023

The PGA Tour Policy Board member has been busy recently off the course, and he's making moves on it today in Detroit. This birdie takes him to -17 and into a share of sixth place.

Hadwin cuts Fowler's lead to one

The Canadian curls in a tricky left-to-righter for his first birdie of the day on the fourth. He's up to -20 and just one behind Fowler, who makes from 4ft for par.

Brolleys up

The rain has arrived to add another layer of intrigue to this final round. Hopefully it stays light and doesn't cause any delays. Time will tell.

Hadwin and Fowler safely find the green on the 165-yard par-3 fifth.

What a putt!

Rickie Fowler of the United States walks from the fourth tee during the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club

What a time to hole a monster putt for Fowler. He pours it in for birdie from 46ft at the fifth to get to -22 and restore his two-shot lead.

Up ahead, Malnati makes another birdie and moves into a tie for third at -18.

How Rickie got to -22

46 FEET for @RickeFowler 💪He extends his lead to two @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/JjkwoXag9O July 2, 2023

This 46-footer got Rickie to -22 and two ahead.

Morikawa to -19

The two-time Major winner continues his assault up the leaderboard with another birdie on the par-5 seventh. He taps in to get to three-under for the round and -19 in total. He's three behind Fowler.

Schenk charging

Adam Schenk makes his fourth birdie in a row at the 10th to get to -19. He could cause an upset if he keeps this up.

Fowler is in decent shape in two on the par-5 seventh.

Another birdie for Morikawa

Collin Morikawa of the United States plays his shot from the third tee during the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club

Morikawa makes it back-to-back gains with a birdie at the eighth that gets him to -20. He's momentarily within two of the lead until Fowler converts from 6ft on the seventh to get to -23.

Hadwin and Pendrith also birdie the seventh to get to -21 and -18 respectively.

Hole in one!!!

HOLE-IN-ONE FOR HOMA!@MaxHoma23 records his second ace on TOUR on No. 15 @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/1iTzcCbRRV July 2, 2023

Brightening up a fairly miserable Detroit day, Max Homa makes a cracking hole-in-one on the par-3 15th, landing his tee shot beyond the hole and spinning it back into the middle of the cup.

It gets Homa to -14 and into the top 25.

Hadwin closes in on Fowler

Fowler can only manage a par on the eighth, leaving the door open for Hadwin from six feet. The Canadian steps through with a birdie to get to -22 and cut Fowler's lead to one.

Audi performance zone

For anyone watching the Sky Sports coverage, can you let me know if you've ever seen Simon Holmes in a different outfit. Starting to think he sleeps in black shoes, black trousers and a black jumper.

Morikawa to -21

Another birdie for @Collin_Morikawa 👀He’s within two of the lead @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/mxBIFkBwpu July 2, 2023

A brilliant wedge into the 10th leaves Morikawa around 6ft for birdie and he converts to get to -21 and within two of Fowler.

Fowler hits a stunning tee shot into the 212-yard par-3 ninth but can't get the 15-footer to drop. He'll take a one-shot lead into the back nine. It's well poised.

Huge par save for Morikawa

Morikawa comes up short on the long par-3 11th and hits a pretty poor chip to around 12ft. Trailing by two, he can't really afford to take a backwards step and doesn't, slotting the par putt to remain -21.

In the final group, Fowler lengthy birdie putt on 10 shaves the edge but stays above ground. Hadwin also makes par, so it's as they were going to 11.

Another birdie for Collin

Here comes Collin. Another pinpoint approach on the 12th leaves him about 10ft for his sixth birdie of the day and he makes it to get to -22. He's now just one behind Fowler, who is on the par-3 11th green but quite a distance away.

Homa in the house

Max Homa, who made a hole-in-one earlier in the day, closes with a par and a round of 67. He leads in the clubhouse at -15 and will take encouragement from that after back-to-back missed cuts.

Schenk to -20

The American two-putts the par-5 14th for birdie to get to -20 and within three of Fowler. He'll need a storming finish to challenge for the win but you never know.

On the DP World Tour...

.@_danielhillier wins the 2023 Betfred British Masters 🏆#BetfredBritishMasters pic.twitter.com/ujxXNAHrTd July 2, 2023

A storming finish - a birdie and two eagles in his final four holes - earned New Zealand's Daniel Hillier his maiden DP World Tour title at the British Masters. What an effort.

Weather update

The rain is chucking down here but it's not bad enough to suspend play yet. Greens are mega slow, with Fowler coming up short with his birdie putt on 13. He is able to mop up for par, though, and stay -23.

He's still one clear of Hadwin and Morikawa with five holes to go. The par-5 14th is up next.

Double bogey takes Moore out of contention

Taylor Moore's slim hopes of winning end on the par-5 14th with a double-bogey. The American hit his third into the water and couldn't get up-and-down to salvage a bogey.

There's a serious hold-up on this hole, with players taking shelter while they wait.

Morikawa ties Fowler at the top

This one had some serious spin on it 👀@Collin_Morikawa will have a good birdie look on 14 to tie the lead @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/5mqulOGc9N July 2, 2023

This is sensational from Morikawa. He zips a wedge back to around 10ft on the par-5 14th and coolly pours it in the front door for his seventh birdie of the day to join Fowler on -23.

Fowler finds 14th in two

A superb drive and fairway wood gets Rickie Fowler onto the par-5 14th green in two, meaning he'll have a great chance to surge clear again having been caught by Morikawa.

Ahead, Morikawa cleans up well from 4ft for par on 15 and finds the fairway on 16. Hadwin is still in the mix at -22 but it looks like a three-way shoot-out for the title.

Fowler three-putts

Nerves are starting to show here. Fowler lags his 73-foot eagle putt to 4ft but pulls his birdie effort and misses a huge chance to retake the solo lead. He remains tied with Morikawa on -23 as he heads to the short par-3 15th.

Hadwin also failed to make birdie so sticks at -22.

Three-way tie at the top

Clutch birdie from @AHadwinGolf 😤He’s now tied for the lead with Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/lkjOmCoWjF July 2, 2023

Hadwin holes from 15ft to get to join Fowler and Morikawa on -23. Rickie is up next on the same line but from a couple feet closer and can't get his to fall, meaning there are now three tied at the top with just three holes left.

Advantage Hadwin on 16

Fowler does well to muscle a nine-iron onto the 16th green from the thick, wet rough, but he's left with 60 feet for birdie.

From the fairway, Hadwin has far more control and takes advantage, flighting an iron shot into 19 feet.

Morikawa takes on par-5 17th in two

Morikawa launches a drive on the par-5 17th and takes on the green in two with a fairway wood. It's all over the flag but stops a fraction long of the green and looks to have nestled on the collar between the fringe and the rough. Could be a tricky up-and-down from there.

Pars for Fowler and Hadwin

Rickie Fowler of the United States approaches the third tee box during the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club

Fowler superbly lags his 60-foot birdie putt down to tap-in distance, meaning Hadwin has a putt to take the solo lead for the first time all day. He hits it well and it's tracking but it dives across the hole and misses left.

The pair remain locked on -23 with Morikawa.

Morikawa hits the front

The two-time Major winner hits a great chip from the back of the 17th green down to about three feet and makes no mistake with the birdie putt. He takes the lead on his own on -24 as he heads to 18.

Birdie and 65 to finish for Glover

It's good to see Lucas Glover back in form. The 2009 US Open champion cleans up from 4ft at 18 for a birdie and a round of 65 to finish -21.

Morikawa burns edge on 18, Fowler out of position

𝙏𝙃𝙄𝙎 close to a closing birdie …@Collin_Morikawa still maintains a one-shot lead in the clubhouse and will await his fate @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/Kdw1YINxu1 July 2, 2023

A good drive and iron shot into 18 leaves Morikawa a 20-footer for birdie and it looks set to fall but burns the edge on the high side. He drops to his knees but it won't change the result. He taps in for a brilliant 64 and sets the clubhouse target at -24.

On 17, Hadwin finds the par-5 green in two while Fowler is in the rough facing a tricky pitch shot.

Hadwin birdies, Fowler pars

Hadwin cleans up from 4ft for a brilliant two-putt on the par-5 to join Morikawa on -23.

Fowler's pitch shot is lucky to bounce out the rough onto the fringe but he can't get his lengthy birdie putt to fall. He's now one behind and needs to birdie 18 to have any chance of winning for the first time in four years.

Kuest on a quest

Clutch moment for the Monday qualifier 😤@Peter_Kuest moves to T4 after a birdie on 17 @RocketClassic. He needs a two-way T4 or better to secure Special Temporary Membership on TOUR. pic.twitter.com/fknGSHCeeT July 2, 2023

This is a potentially huge Sunday for Peter Kuest, who Monday qualified for this event. He needs to finish in a two-way tie for fourth to secure Special Temporary Membership to the PGA Tour; he's currently in a three-way tie...

FOWLER!!!!!!

Fowler's tee shot narrowly avoids the hazard that runs up the left-hand side of 18 and he takes advantage, firing a laser-like iron shot from the semi rough to about 4ft. That was clutch.

Hadwin finds the rough off the tee and misses the green with his second, but he's not in bad shape in the first cut. A playoff looks likely but you never know...

Fowler makes, playoff time

Clutch shot from @RickieFowler!He has a 3-footer left to force a playoff @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/A5CvpZYaBI July 2, 2023

Death, taxes and a PGA Tour event I'm covering going to a playoff.

Hadwin chips to 4ft and makes the par putt to finish -24 and ensure we're going to a playoff. Can Rickie join them? Absolutely. He bangs it in the middle after an unbelievable second shot.

Fowler in trouble

Back to 18 we go. Morikawa is up first and pipes one down the middle. Fowler is next and he shells it well right and into the gallery. Hadwin joins Morikawa on the fairway.

Lightning isn't far away so it looks like we'll only have time for two extra holes.

Fowler hits a stunner

What a shot from @RickieFowler!He’s left with a 11-footer for birdie @RocketClassic. pic.twitter.com/gnufBYIFIY July 2, 2023

Rickie gets a huge break off the tee to pull a lie but boy does he make the most of it. From 184 yards he fizzes his approach to 11 feet.

Over to Hadwin and his approach lands close but it's loaded with spin and backs up some 20 feet away.

Morikawa goes aggressive and hits his approach over the green.

Amazingly, it's advantage Fowler.

FOWLER IS THE CHAMPION!

Hadwin hits a great putt but it just burns the edge on the left side. Morikawa is next from the thick rough and goes underneath it, leaving himself 7ft for par.

But it matters little as Rickie steps up and slots his birdie putt to win on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2019. He did it the hard way. Take a bow, Rickie Fowler.

The winning moment

Incredible scenes!

Rickie Fowler ends PGA Tour victory drought with playoff win at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Jupiter's Rickie Fowler has snapped his four-year drought on the PGA Tour.Fowler won a three-way playoff Sunday against Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin to win the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

Inclement weather in Sunday's forecast forced an early end for the tournament, but nothing was going to rain on Fowler's day after having not won on the Tour since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open. Two weeks ago, Fowler almost won the U.S. Open , finishing with a final-round 75 and going from at least a share of the lead after each of the first three rounds to tied for fifth.

On Sunday, Morikawa, Hadwin and Fowler all finished at 24 under to force the second playoff in the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s five-year history. In the end, it was Fowler who came out on top after just one extra hole with a birdie. It was the sixth win of his Tour career.

“I knew it was just a matter of time with how I’ve been playing,” said Fowler, who has eight top-10 finishes this season. “I’ve had a couple tough weekends where I had a chance.”

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

rickie fowler pga tour wins

Although Ludvig Aberg wasn't able to become just the seventh golfer in the last 100 years to win his first career major appearance, the 24-year-old performed better than everyone besides the No. 1 golfer in the world at the Masters. Aberg, who finished second behind Scottie Scheffler and three strokes better than the third-place finishers, will try to carry that success into his second major at the 2024 PGA Championship on Thursday, May 16 at Valhalla Golf Club Louisville, Ky. Aberg, who is 16-1 odds in the 2024 PGA Championship odds, has made the cut in his first nine tournaments in the 2024 PGA Tour schedule as one of the top golfers in his first full-time season on the PGA Tour. Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite in the latest PGA Championship odds 2024, followed by Jon Rahm (9-1) and Rory McIlroy (10-1).

Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering picks on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa finished third at the Masters at 4-under-par, as the 27-year-old continues to have  his best performances at major events. He is already a two-time major champion, including winning the PGA Championship in 2020 and has four top-five finishes over his last 10 majors.

Morikawa has six career PGA Tour victories and two top-10 finishes over his first eight PGA Tour events this season. What he lacks in driving power he makes up for in accuracy, ranking fifth in driving accuracy, so he rarely has to take his second shot from anywhere but the fairway. He's a top-30 putter on the PGA Tour, ranking inside the top 30 in birdie average, one-putt percentage and putting average.  See who else to pick here .

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

PGA Tour's Rickie Fowler and wife Allison are expecting their 2nd child

R ickie Fowler and his wife Allison Stokke are expecting the birth of their second child, according to Fowler himself on his own personal Instagram. He shared the post with his wife and said they're "excited" to become a foursome.

They have a young child who was seen with them at the Masters Par-3 Tournament last week, and they will be bringing a sibling into the world soon. Stokke is a professional athlete herself, and the two have been married for five years.

Rickie Fowler is not the only golfer who is expecting a child soon. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler's wife Meredith is also due very soon. They are expecting sooner but will not be the only golf baby born in the near future.

In fact, Scheffler would have withdrawn had his wife gone into labor. She didn't and the golfer was able to stay in the competition and earn his second green jacket in three years.

Fowler won't likely have a Major interrupted by the birth of his second child, as the pregnancy is pretty recent and won't come to fruition for a little while anyway.

Rickie Fowler reflects on winning Masters Par-3

There has never been a golfer to win the Masters Par-3 Contest and the tournament itself. That remained true over the weekend, as Rickie Fowler won the Par-3 but didn't win the Masters.

Fowler said via SB Nation:

"It's cool winning the Par-3 contest and being a part of that, having that is something, and to have done with it Maya and my wife on the bag. I got some great crystal, nice Crystal bowl out of it. Got my name over there forever. Whether they like it or not, my name is a part of Augusta forever."

He will try again in the future to become the first Par-3 champion to also take home a green jacket, and he will also try to do better than his 2024 performance. He did make the cut, but he also finished 30th and five over par.

The conditions in the first two days, which caused a delay in round one, didn't help:

"You know, tough conditions first two days. I got off to a tough start the first and just kind of trying to battle back after that... I thought it will always be fun to try and do both. I've got one leg of it. Got work on the big course next."

Fowler has long been a fan favorite on tour, but is still chasing his first-ever Major win. He finished second at the 2018 Masters, and has been at least top three in the PGA Championship, US Open and Open Championship without a win.

Fowler had a very long PGA Tour win drought that was snapped in July of 2023, and now he is aiming to snap a winless streak at Major tournaments. Unfortunately, his bid at the Masters fell short and he will have to look to the future.
