Yoga in the green forest. Bali, Indonesia.

A Yogi's Guide to the Best Travel Vacations for Yoga: One with Nature

Connect mind, body, and spirit on a travel yoga vacation.

By Chantae Reden | Published on April 22, 2022

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

H istorians believe yoga began in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. Today, the practice of connecting your mind, body and spirit through moving meditation has manifested into many forms. Whether you enjoy traditional yoga taught in an ashram, poses paired with punk rock music in a city warehouse or seaside yoga retreats with the ocean as your soundtrack, there are no bounds to when, where and how to practice yoga.

If you're searching for the best travel vacations for yoga , these are the destinations you won't want to miss.

The Best Travel Yoga Vacations To Practice Traditional & Spiritual Yoga

view of the birthplace of yoga, the Ganga river. Rishikesh, India

Travel back to yoga's ancient roots in India where monasteries, called ashrams, welcome yogis who seek a spiritual harmony between themselves and the world. In an ashram, you'll practice, meditate and participate in spiritual yoga practices guided by a mentor. It's a place to disconnect from the stress of daily life and focus on your inner self. An ashram usually has a garden for meditation, rooms dedicated to yoga, a library and a communal kitchen area for sharing meals. Unlike yoga retreats found elsewhere, staying in an ashram is often free or nearly free, as yogis volunteer within the community in exchange for accommodation and food.

The city of Rishikesh, set on the foothills of the Himalayas, is known as the birthplace of yoga and home to ashrams where even budding yogis are welcome. Mysore and Chennai also offer authentic ashram experiences. And while Goa might be famous for its party scene, there are plenty of worthwhile yoga schools near its sandy shores.

Yoga has Hindu origins, with Shiva commonly seen as the creator and great deity of yoga. This relationship between Hinduism and yoga is why many beliefs and practices within the two often cross over. For example, according to Hindu mythology, Shiva has a third eye on his forehead, which is where many yogis focus their point of consciousness during meditation. The belief in chakras — focal points of human energy — is present in Hinduism and some forms of Buddhism, and many yoga teachers center their classes around these ancient Hindu concepts.

Yoga's connection with Hinduism (and Hinduism's close relationship with Buddhism) is also likely why the practice has been widely accepted in other predominantly Hindu and Buddhist regions around the world, like the island of Bali in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Nepal

Famous Hindu temple and tourist attraction on Bratan lake. Bali, Indonesia.

Bali was where I first found my yoga practice. Tucked away in the back of a thatched-roof bungalow built from bamboo, I realized that you don't need to be able to touch your toes to receive value from yoga. Those who lack flexibility, both mentally and physically, are often the ones who can benefit from yoga the most. As a novice traveler, yoga helped me navigate unfamiliar environments — like the busy streets of Denpasar and the pumping waves of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali. Before yoga, I would've panicked and jumped to the worst case scenario. With the help of yoga, I gained the confidence to stay present and calm.

There are dozens of yoga studios around the "Island of the Gods," typically set in tranquil locations. In Ubud, you'll find traditional yoga taught among emerald terraces of rice paddies. On the Bukit Peninsula, you can enjoy views of a cobalt sea, impressive cliffs and mesmerizing waves in between classes. The Hindu temples, sculptures of deities, ever present public ceremonies, and daily offerings of meticulously arranged flowers, called canang sari , found all throughout the island act as reminders of the essence of yoga.

view of the Himalayan mountains. Nepal. Asia

Set along the Himalayas, the dramatic snow-capped skylines of Nepal are bound to inspire awe as you practice yoga near the world's largest mountains. Many yoga centers in Nepal offer classes taught outdoors, often paired with trekking as a form of moving meditation. The crisp, cool air against your skin, the presence of unfathomably tall mountains, the warm feeling of sipping a cup of piping hot tea, the sound of chimes and the sweet smell of incense wafting to the skies from Hindu and Buddhist temples all make it hard to be anything but in the moment.

Travel Vacation Destinations For Beach Yoga In Nature

Woman practicing yoga on the rock in waterfall on the mountain

No matter how busy your life is while at home or while traveling, it's worthwhile to practice yoga. Recent studies have found that a regular yoga practice can lead to benefits such as better sleep, better body awareness, and greater happiness. Though yoga classes often tick beyond the hour mark, a few minutes of yoga a day can lead to these health rewards. When you practice yoga in a natural setting, the benefits stretch even further.

Many yogis enjoy yoga for the sense of peace it can bring, even those who've only just picked up the practice. And while the commercial yoga industry might have you wondering if you need the perfect outfit, a non-stick yoga mat, yoga blocks, straps, and a teacher to participate in yoga, the truth is that it can be done just about anywhere in comfortable clothing. Once you have the basics, you can practice beach yoga, on a point overlooking the ocean, in a forest surrounded by birdsong, or, if you're brave, on a snowy plain. In the smallest of spaces, you can always practice tree pose, where you balance on one foot. This opens the possibility of practicing yoga at nearly every scenic setting in the world, as long as you have a little solitude.

View of a beach to do yoga in Koh Samui, Thailand.

In Asia, Thailand is a worthy contender for being one of the best travel vacations for yoga in nature . Yoga classes and retreats take place near (and sometimes on) the sugar sand beaches of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Phuket. Classes range from traditional to modern, with acro-yoga classes available to traveling duos who have a penchant for practicing with a partner. At the Yoga Garden on Koh Samui, I spent a class moving through sun salutations in an open-air studio surrounded by tropical gardens. Inland, you can stretch and relax amidst the tropical forests of Chiang Mai. Or take a trip to the top of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a temple overlooking rolling mountains — the epitome of serenity.

Sri Lanka is also an ideal setting for practicing yoga immersed in nature, with some programs available to yogis who want to spend time outdoors in between classes. In Kandy, swim under a waterfall, stroll along a quiet trail, and look to the treetops for a chance to spot colorful birds and cheeky monkeys. In Mirissa, let the waves lull you into a trance as you enjoy beach yoga. The well-being benefits of nature come when you surround yourself in green spaces such as forests and blue spaces like the ocean. Fortunately, Sri Lanka offers both.

The laid back lifestyle of a Pacific island paradise pairs nicely with the intentional slowness of yoga, and you're bound to be surrounded by natural beauty on just about any island offering a yoga class. In Hawaii, classes are taught near the impressive cascades of Maui, the volcanic black sand beaches of the Big Island, and near the big waves of Oahu's North Shore. Across the equator, Fiji's Coral Coast is a prime spot to practice yoga under palm trees.

Travel Destinations That Combine Sports And Yoga

While yoga boasts mental well-being benefits, it's also incredibly beneficial to physical health. With these perks in mind, many athletes are adding yoga to their regular training routine. Yoga can be paired with just about any sport, and retreats that combine yoga with surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, or climbing are becoming increasingly popular.

Silhouette of a surfer in Costa Rica

Central America is a hub for the surf, yoga, eat, sleep, repeat lifestyle. In Costa Rica, revitalizing yoga retreats and classes are found all throughout the country. Beginner surfers and yogis can enjoy the laid-back lifestyle of Tamarindo, while those in search of pumping waves might get lucky enough and find them at Playa Hermosa or Salsa Brava, near Puerto Limon. Costa Rica's motto, "pura vida," means pure life, and you're bound to experience it no matter which part of the coastline you explore. In Panama, invigorating surf and yoga holidays are found in Santa Catalina and Bocas del Toro.

Mexico Cancun Ik Kil Cenote Vines

You don't have to trade adventure for relaxation. There are hundreds of yoga retreats throughout the country of Mexico that combine the two. Pair yoga with snorkeling and scuba diving in Cozumel, where sea turtles, rays, reef sharks, and technicolor corals calls the region home. You'll explore seascapes such as caves, caverns, and coral bommies, and then wind down at the end of the day with a zen yoga practice. Or, spend your days on retreat hiking the Sierra Madre of Puerto Vallarta for mountain yoga, stopping beneath the shady trees for mediation, and additional stretching. And near Tulum, try a yoga class on an over-water platform in an underground sinkhole. Perching yourself above the aquarium-clear water will make the transition from savasana to swimming seamless.

Practice Yoga In Less Likely Places

Tour European Cliff and Coastal Towns

Europe's southwest coast might not be the first region that comes to mind when you think yoga vacation, but many yogis are flocking to southern Portugal, Spain, and the Canary Islands for the scrumptious food, historic architecture, sunny skies, pristine beaches and waves the area has on offer. In Portugal, surf and yoga camps are common in Lagos, Ericeira, Sagres, and Cascais. Yoga is the antidote to adrenaline-inducing sports like kitesurfing in open ocean, surfing over shallow reef, or hiking volcanic crater rims — all activities available for yogis in Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands. And in Greece and Croatia, sailing and yoga retreats go hand in hand as you balance onboard a sailing yacht. Hoist sails and navigate from island to island in search of a prime place to relax. With unreliable internet service once you leave shore, this is one of the best travel yoga destinations for swapping external for internal connection.

Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle

If you prefer snow to sunshine, see just how flexible you can be even under all those layers. In the Austrian Alps, there are retreats catered to snow-shoeing, snowboarding, and skiing yogis. Classes are given under the northern lights in Norway, creating an ambiance that will make you feel like you're embedded in an arctic fairy tale. Zen, indeed.

The incredible thing about yoga is that it can be practiced anywhere, anytime. So, whether you're on a beach in Maui, in a treehouse in Indonesia , or in your living room still dreaming up your perfect yoga trip, take a deep breath in and give thanks for the beauty this world has to offer. And ... exhale.

Wellness on the waves: best wellness and self-care cruises

yoga themed cruises

Looking for a yoga-themed cruise or a wellness retreat on the waves? These are our picks for the best wellness and self-care cruises featuring acupuncture, lifestyle seminars, ayurvedic cuisine, wellness excursions, onboard saunas and spas, and more.

Wellness is buoyant and has taken to the high seas. The traditional yoga class and massage in the spa is old hat – that ship sailed long ago. Today, think acupuncture, lifestyle seminars, ayurvedic cuisine, a zero-gravity massage, and a personal trainer to guide you to fitness, while fat and muscle diagnostics help achieve health goals. From partnerships with wellness pioneers and alternative medicine advocates, the traditional boundaries of wellness have broadened and embarked on voyages out at sea. Wellness on the waves steer towards self-discovery and self-care, with ground-breaking treatments, navigating towards wellness expeditions and experiences onboard and ashore.

Swan Hellenic partners with Dr Deepak Chopra for wellbeing voyages

Swan H ellenic has crafted a series of cultural expedition cruises with a well-being twist.

Inspired by the healing properties of the sea, the cruise line has linked up with Dr Deepak Chopra to create a series of ‘Explore & Restore’ well-being voyages, designed to foster self-discovery and cultural immersion.

There are 6 cultural expedition journeys in 2024, featuring five to nine days of cruise and wellness. All Swan Hellenic ships have a Chopra-certified meditation and yoga teacher offering private and group sessions daily.

During this transformative journey, according to Swan Hellenic’s CEO Andrea Sito, wellness and exploration seamlessly merge, igniting a unique path that invites travellers to embark on a voyage where self-care and discovery coexist.

‘Explore & Restore’ pairs inward journeys with outward experiences and include Ayurvedic culinary offerings, daily meditation, yoga and breathwork classes, and expert-led workshops designed to unveil the passengers’ authentic selves and their path to purpose – all while discovering the captivating places.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises brings ground-breaking treatments onboard

yoga themed cruises

The Seven Seas Grandeur has transformed its Serene Spa & Wellness offering with a revamped treatment menu.

Ground-breaking treatments harness the power of a pioneering amber and quartz crystal bed. Guests seeking complete rejuvenation can book a Hot Mineral Body Boost. The Poultice-Powered Muscle Release works away sore, aching muscles with an invigorating treatment that targets tension areas with vibrational energy. The Zero Gravity Wellness Massage is the next generation of innovative wellness. It produces a zero-gravity effect as the body is suspended on an advanced treatment table that allows for ergonomic workflows and a seamless series of sophisticated techniques.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’  Sun-Splashed Shores  voyage continue the wellness broad theme ashore. Visit an authentic Mayan village by strolling along a canopied jungle path through an area full of medicinal plants and herbs, followed by a Mayan shaman preparing traditional medicines and explaining their uses.

Seabourn teams up with Dr Andrew Weil to integrate mind and body at sea

yoga themed cruises

The Spa at Seabourn offers a wide spectrum of massages, facials and beauty treatments, blending traditional practices from around the world with the most up-to-date techniques. An ocean-view gym features state-of-the art equipment (where fitness directors may create guests’ ideal regime); a Motion Studio offers complimentary yoga, tai chi and meditation, Crystal Sound Bath, TRX and Stretch classes; while a full-service multi-sex salon complements the spa offerings.

yoga themed cruises

Taking a yoga class on a cruise ship was a whole new challenge, but I'd choose it over a regular studio in a heartbeat

  • I was on the Carnival Vista, Carnival Cruise Line's first ship to sail in the US since the pandemic started .
  • The activities on the ship were nearly identical to those on a pre-pandemic cruise, including fitness classes.
  • I joined two yoga classes where the shaky ship added an entirely new challenge to familiar poses.

I spent a week in July aboard the Carnival Vista learning what cruising is like post-vaccination.

yoga themed cruises

Cruising is back, and on July 3, the Carnival Vista departed from Galveston, Texas, becoming the cruise line's first ship to set sail in the US in over 16 months .

I was aboard the 2,700-passenger ship to report on the experience for Insider.

From indulging in buffets to laughing at comedy shows, I explored the Carnival Vista and all it had to offer.

yoga themed cruises

I spent the week discovering every change Carnival Cruise lines implemented on its first ship back and whether the experience could compare to pre-pandemic cruising.

I tried everything from Guy Fieri's barbecue buffet to sleeping in a windowless tiny cabin . I also included explored Carnival Vista's gym and fitness classes.

I was curious if fitness classes were different on a cruise ship. So on the sixth day of the cruise, I ventured to the ship's spa for a yoga class.

yoga themed cruises

I navigated my way to deck 12, where the Cloud 9 Spa is located on the Carnival Vista.

At the very back of the spa is the ship's gym, which offers 180-degree views of the ocean, and a small fitness class filled with spin bikes for cycling and a handful of yoga mats.

I arrived for a "pathway to yoga" class , which was one of the paid fitness classes available to passengers and cost $17.25.

Since I last took a yoga class in pre-pandemic New York City — where you're forced to arrive early in order to snag a spot — I showed up 15 minutes before the session started.

yoga themed cruises

When I lived in Brooklyn, New York, I remember racing across my neighborhood to different yoga studios to get there 15 or 20 minutes before the class had started to grab the ideal spot for my yoga mat.

With 2,700 people on board the ship, I guessed it would be a similar scramble for spots. So I turned up 15 minutes before the class... but I soon realized I didn't need to.

I was shocked — and a bit relieved — that I was the only one joining the class.

yoga themed cruises

The idea of being jam-packed in a gym with heaving strangers was a new fear unlocked during COVID. So for the last year, I've avoided in-person yoga classes and gyms at all costs.

But the Carnival Vista felt like a safer place to restart indoor fitness classes since the vast majority of people on the ship were vaccinated; Carnival Cruises has required its crew members to get the COVID vaccine, and 95% of guests on the ship were also vaccinated.

As I walked to the fitness studio, I mentally prepared to join a yoga class with strangers. But I was the only one who showed up.

Yoga instructor McWilliam wasn't surprised that I was the only one in the class.

yoga themed cruises

In the studio, I met one of the ship's two fitness instructors, McWilliam.

McWilliam said this was his second contract as a fitness instructor for cruise ships. So he's taught yoga, cycling, and pilates to hundreds of passengers and has learned the rhythm of cruise ships.

He said he wasn't a bit surprised that I was the only person joining his yoga class. Most people rush to the fitness classes the first few days of the cruise, but it peters out during the final days, he said.

I was joining McWilliam's yoga class on day six of the eight-day cruise. Plus, it was after a long day in Cozumel, Mexico.

"People are tired from exploring, and they want to take the evening off," he told Insider.

So we started the class, and immediately the ship started rocking.

yoga themed cruises

Coincidentally, I signed up for a yoga class the only day the ship was rocking.

For the five days on the cruise, it was smooth sailing. There had been little movement, and at moments, I entirely forgot I was on an enormous ship.

But just a few hours before my yoga class, the ship hit rougher waters and started moving back and forth. For McWilliam, it wasn't anything out of the norm.

"There were some rocky ships in Australia," he said. "So rocky that we had to cancel the class because it was too dangerous."

People losing their balance could lead to injuries, so if the ship is moving too much, the class gets canceled.

What we experienced was minor, so we continued through our movements.

The rocking added a new challenging element to the typical yoga class.

yoga themed cruises

McWilliam instructed me through a basic yoga class. It was filled with lunging warrior poses, sun salutations, and some hip stretching.

I had done the majority of the poses before, so I didn't expect the class to be too challenging.

But the rocking ship added a completely unexpected dynamic to the class.

I tipped over during a yogi squat and lost my balance during a warrior two pose where you're in a lunge with your arms extended.

Fortunately, I was able to laugh over my lack of balance and continue through the poses unscathed.

As we moved through poses, I felt calmer and my balance strengthened.

yoga themed cruises

On the Carnival Cruise's HUB App, the yoga class is targeted at everyone "from the yoga newbies to the experienced yogi."

And the description felt accurate. As someone who has taken their fair share of yoga classes, the class wasn't too challenging, but there were still opportunities to push yourself.

Plus, a rocking ship would challenge any experienced yogi.

As the 45-minute class came to a close, the rocking ship made it even harder to fight off sleep in the final savasana pose.

yoga themed cruises

McWilliam ended the 45-minute class in savasana, which is the final resting pose where you lay on your back completely still.

After any yoga class, I can easily slip into sleep during the savasana pose. A rocking boat only tempted me more.

Compared to a pre-pandemic fitness class, I didn't notice any changes except that the instructor wore a mask.

yoga themed cruises

The most obvious change I noticed was that McWilliam wore a face mask throughout the entire class.

When the class ended, I went to roll up the yoga mat and store it away, but McWilliam asked me to leave it out so he could sanitize it once I left.

I'm not sure whether Carnival Cruise Lines sanitized mats prior to the pandemic, but this is a common practice for many yoga classes, so the request didn't faze me.

For $17, the private yoga class felt like a steal.

yoga themed cruises

In Brooklyn, I could easily spend $20 or $25 for a drop-in class at my local yoga studio.

There, I would share the space with 20 other people.

I felt like the $17.25 price tag was a fair price, and when I factored in that I received one-on-one instruction, it made the price feel like an even better deal.

McWilliam said at most, the fitness room fits eight people, so no matter what, the classes are small.

The price paired with the peacefulness of the class motivated me to wake up early the next morning and do it all again.

yoga themed cruises

The following morning, I joined another yoga class led by McWilliam.

This time, one other passenger joined the class, and the three of us went through a yoga practice that involved using a hand towel as a yoga strap.

The towel helped us get deeper stretches and wake up our bodies for the final day at sea.

When I left the second class, I knew I'd miss the added challenge and peacefulness the rocking ship created.

Star Clippers: yoga-themed sailings

The Star Clippers tall-ship cruise line, founded by Swede Mikael Krafft,  has signed up more qualified instructors for its yoga-themed sailings this summer and autumn.  They are employed to teach you to balance on one leg in the middle of the Med.

You are seeing more corpses and happy babies on cruises these days.   As well as a lot more trees, warriors and cobras.    Muster points now have yoga mats and poop decks are full of less sunbathers in sunglasses and more contortionists in leotards posing as Half Lords Of The Fishes.

For and aft, cruisers are performing their downward-facing dogs and Chakravakasana cat cat-cow stretches.

Passengers can take part in complimentary, daily power yoga classes throughout eight sailings on board Star Clipper from May– October, visiting ports of call in the Western Mediterranean . An example itinerary based on 15th July 2023 departure sees Star Clipper visiting Cannes, Portofino, L’Ile Rousse, Calvi, Plage Saint Antoine, Le Lavandou and St Tropez.

Star Clipper

Fay McCormack, General Manager of the UK GSA, says ‘T oday’s ever-increasing awareness of the positive effects of yoga on mental wellbeing reaffirms why we choose to offer this service to our guests’.

Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest and tallest fully-crewed sailing vessels. Its 42-sail, five-masted, 134m, three swimming pool Royal Clipper , the world’s largest square-rigger, is inspired by the Preussen tall ship. It has a three-deck atrium as well as the Caoptain Nemo klounge with underwater portholes. It carries 227 with a crew of 106.

Star Clipper and Star Flyer are both 115m and include a library with a Belle Epoque fireplace. They accommodate 116 passengers and boast a crew of 74.

The ships can drop anchor in smaller harbours and visit ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and providing guests with the amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht.

Royal Clipper

The line offers luxury cruises to the east Mediterranean and, in the winter, to Caribbean ports of call such as Aruba, Curacao, St Barts and St Maarten. There are also Panama canal cruises and Atlantic Ocean crossings . Costa Rica is a new destination and departures  and arrivals from Puerto Caldera and Puntaarenas.

The new 14 night central American cruise takes in the Arenal volcano, the 600,000 -year-old Poas volcano, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.  La Fortuna Waterfall, El Silencio de Los Angeles Biological Reserve and the Islas Parida and Tortuga.

Available too in 2023 are Monaco Grand Prix  and Ryder Cup packages as well as a cruise which combines with the  Venice Simpleton-Orient Express.

What travelers are saying

"Geoff helped my wife and I to put together an itinerary that customized to our particular interests and preferences. At the outset he asked us where we'd like to go and, after a small number of iterations, together we were able able to craft an itinerary that met our budget, touched on much of the places we wanted, and did not have us staying at a different resort each night. Before leaving for our trip we were given our itinerary and confirmation #'s/vouchers/contact #'s for all of our activities and hotels captured in an easy-to-use app that made it extremely easy to transition to the next point of our journey. He and his assistant were quick to respond to any questions we had along the way as well. Overall, we had a great stay and highly endorse Geoff and RealNZ for anyone planning a bespoke trip to NZ."

"I have the distinct pleasure of working with Steven at Iberian Escapes as our property manager and host. We moved away from a larger property manager because they couldn't get organized and they never provided accurate accounting - we were frustrated and quickly losing trust. Thankfully, we found Iberian Escapes. Steven met us at our apartment - on time - and he's done everything he said he would. We live in a different country and we needed someone trustworthy and competent. We very much appreciate the honesty, integrity, accurate accounting, and timely communication to us AND our guests no matter the situation. We even heard from some recent guests "you've got a great property manager! He's very responsive and easy to work with" Another guest liked the apartment so much he wanted to stay an extra day. Easy for us, easy for the guest, and all seamlessly coordinated by Iberian Escapes! Highly recommend for property owners looking for a great manager. Also highly recommend finding one of his listings if you're planning on staying in one of the areas he covers! You won't be disappointed."

"An Unforgettable Journey - From Start to Finish I can't express enough how amazing our experience was with DesertBrise Travel, especially with Khalil. Right from our initial conversation, he was consistently available, responsive, and focused on planning every aspect of our trip. While we had some ideas for stops, we didn't have a complete picture, and Khalil took the time to craft a detailed trip plan. She involved us in the decision-making process, addressing all our questions and even providing a comprehensive packing list before our departure, ensuring we were well-prepared. Khalil's meticulous planning and support gave us confidence in the trip's success even before we set off. The journey itself exceeded our expectations. The itinerary was perfectly timed, taking us beyond the cities into rural areas, diverse landscapes, and providing a glimpse of Morocco we wouldn't have discovered on our own. Our accommodations were stunning, and the tour guides at each location were exceptional – well-versed in their areas of expertise and excellent communicators. Special mention goes to our overall guide, Omar, who not only drove us across the entire country but also ensured our comfort, enjoyment, and shared valuable insights, including introducing us to Moroccan and Amazigh music. A resounding 10/10 recommendation for DesertBrise Travel, Khalil, and the entire team. They truly deliver an unforgettable experience!"

"My wife and I did the six day Lofoten Islands tour offered by 50 Degrees North. The tour is simple, they provided us a rental car, accommodations for two nights each at three Rorbuer hotels scattered across the islands, and a couple of scheduled day tours. Most of the time, we were on our own to see the islands at our own pace. The islands are stunningly beautiful, and the tour planning made our travels hassle free. They even scheduled lunch for us at an organic goat farm, which may sound a little strange for a vacation like this, but that is only because you haven't tasted the cheese. (Best lunch ever!) At our request, they altered the tour slightly so that we could begin the tour in Svolvaer and end it six days later at the airport in Leknes. We can't imagine a more complete tour of the islands in six short days."

Yoga, Meditation & Wellness Tour Selection Trips

  • Many serious yoga retreats, especially in India, require that you have a solid yoga foundation before attending. Be sure you know the level your tour is catering to.
  • If you want to volunteer while on your travels, yoga tours will often incorporate this into their itineraries.
  • The daily schedules of yoga and meditation retreats can differ dramatically. Some (especially in India, often at Ashrams) involve rising before the sun and following a strict schedule including morning prayer ceremonies, yoga, and perhaps meditation all before breakfast, and encourage spending your time in silence.
  • Other retreats may follow a more choose-your-own pace and offer more of a spa-style vacation with massages, ayurveda, reiki or other treatments either included in your package or available to add on.
  • Know how much yoga you want to do. How many hours of yoga do you want to do per day? Again this can range significantly from retreat to retreat.
  • Yoga and Surf. A rapidly growing number of Surf Camps offer the option to enjoy both time in the waves followed by restorative yoga sessions - the perfect way to soothe any sore muscles!
  • Yoga retreats can be a great way to experience Eco Tourism , as many retreats are low-impact and get back to nature. If that’s something on your mind then have a look for retreats that use sustainable accommodation.
  • Consider your level and any preference for style of Yoga. Check if previous experience is required and what level the retreat will cater to. Many offer all-levels, but if you’re looking for your very first taste of Yoga, a beginner’s retreat might be more comfortable.
  • Do you need to stay connected? Many retreats encourage digital as well as bodily detox. If you need wifi and/or phone signal, do check in advance if your chosen retreat has this.

Additional details

Yoga, Meditation & Wellness tours emphasize the importance of finding your inner peace. These types of tours have grown in popularity in recent years for a number of different reasons. With our growing dependence on technology, people feel the need to unplug and become reacquainted with the outside world. Yoga, Meditation & Wellness tours are a great way to disconnect from your bustling surroundings.

It is also a great way to re-energize yourself, which can help you alleviate stress, boost confidence, and increase positivity.  Sometimes, we can become disillusioned and lose track of our goals. Yoga, Meditation & Wellness tours can help refocus your occupational, relational, and personal ideals.

What to Expect from a Yoga Getaway Package

There are several key differences between choosing a yoga retreat package over just going on a yoga retreat. Firstly, yoga vacation packages usually last for a longer period of time than yoga retreats, which typically last a weekend or a few days. This extended time means that you will have more time to focus on the yoga, away from day to day distractions, and significantly improve your skills.

Another thing to expect is some form of a meal plan, included by your tour operator. Yoga vacations focus on wellness in all its forms -- spiritually, mentally, physically, -- so you should anticipate some healthy food. If you are vegetarian, or interested in exploring vegetarianism, yoga trips are known for having delicious vegetarian options, so they are a great time to test the waters!

A yoga trip is also a great opportunity to meet new people. All sorts of people are drawn to yoga trips, and if you are embarking on a trip outside of your local yoga studio, you will definitely encounter many new and interesting people.

Another common feature of yoga retreats is that the use of technology will discouraged, if not banned. Physically unplugging helps with the mission of reaching past daily and superficial distractions, and connecting with your inner self, the earth, and the community. As a result, you should prepare for the fact that you may be totally disconnected from home and work while on your retreat. While this may be a hard habit to break -- you will thank yourself by the end of the trip!

Should I go with a group, or alone?

Many travellers who repeatedly attend yoga trips prefer to do them alone. One of the main reasons is that yoga, whether it is done in a group or on a retreat, is still a personal journey. Travelling alone will force you to focus internally, without being able to rely or lean on the support a friend, an din the end will help strengthen your personal growth.

If you’re worried that going alone will prevent you from making any friends -- don’t worry! Most yoga retreat itineraries include community building and group activities, and you will have plenty of chances to get to know other solo travellers. This is further ensured by the fact that technology will probably be banned on your trip, meaning that your companions will be looking forward to more in person bonding.

How to Prepare for a Yoga Trip

Before selecting which yoga trip is right for you, we recommend doing a bit of research. Firstly, you should research the instructor (or instructors) on the trip. The personality and teaching style of your instructor will make a big difference in how your trip goes -- so it’s important to check on this ahead of time.

On a similar note, pay particular attention to the type of yoga practiced on the retreat, and the intensity of the schedule. If you are a new yogi, this may be especially important to you. Confirm with the tour company what level of experience may be expected for the trip. There are also many different forms of yoga -- from hot yoga, to yoga with cardio elements, to restorative yoga, check to make sure you have the option to experience at least a few different kinds.

Finally, remember, a yoga vacation is still a vacation! On any yoga retreat package, there are sure to be plenty of non-yoga related activities to help you get to know your surroundings -- w hile discovering more about yourself, you can also learn more about the world. During any given Yoga, Meditation & Wellness tour, you can also experience local cultures.  Most tours set aside days when you can explore the country: Y its history, cuisine, and heritage sites.

If you are traveling to Ladakh, India, perhaps take a day to experience a camel safari . If you’re in New Zealand, maybe you’ll explore the beautiful pacific ocean by kayak .

What are the benefits of yoga?

The purpose of this ancient practice of Hindu origin is to improve general health, both internally and externally. Its main benefits internally are the creation of a more harmonious relationship with one’s own body, learning to control the mind and emotions. Externally, yoga provides greater physical flexibility, greater concentration and helps with the relief of muscle tension, as long as it is practiced under the guidance of experts.

The coaches that will guide these sessions, will be able to understand your special needs.

What parts of the body do you exercise when practicing yoga?

This depends on the postures that are practiced during the session. Yoga can work the muscles of the arms, legs, buttocks, and abdomen.

What should you wear to a yoga session?

Since it is an activity that requires a lot of movement, it is recommended to wear clothes that allow you to move, that are comfortable and in good condition.

It is advisable to wear loose or elastic clothing. The ideal materials for garments are cotton and lycra. Do not forget that the jungle has a tropical climate, hence the lightest and antiperspirant clothes are ideal.

What else should I bring to a yoga session?

For this outing, bring the articles you have. These are some of the recommended articles:

It is the basic article for the practice of this discipline. Most yoga postures are practiced on a mat.

Pay attention that it is non-slip to avoid slipping and having an accident. The thickness must be enough to insulate us from the ground. Do not choose excessively thick mats.

As for the size, it must have a length that allows you to lie stretched out without protruding from it.

Yoga blocks

These are small foam bricks that will help you get into some poses. They are very useful for beginners who do not yet have that much flexibility.

Yoga straps

Like the blocks, the straps make it easier to perform certain movements and stretches. In addition, they also collaborate in maintaining a posture for longer.

How will your body change with the practice of yoga?

The practice of this activity reinforces your vitality, since it helps with the solution of health problems related to low back pain, arthritis, as well as it can help reduce risk factors for chronic diseases, such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

On the other hand, practicing this discipline of Hindu origin will improve your physical condition, an excellent benefit that helps you feel comfortable with yourself.

Finally, it will make you a person with better resources to deal with stressful situations, which will help you in personal and work aspects.

Another discipline, which will be practiced in this exceptional outing in November 2023, is sound healing. Learn more about it below:

What is sound healing?

Sound healing or sonotherapy is a technique that is based on the concept of resonance, which refers to the vibrational frequency of objects. It consists of using sounds to calibrate the vibrational frequencies of those who practice it. Can you imagine combining this discipline with the sounds of the jungle?

What are the benefits of sound healing?

This technique helps to release blocks, silence unproductive thoughts  and negative emotions that make it difficult to continue with daily tasks.

Sound Healing allows us to be with ourselves, identify the negative thoughts that arise in our minds and calm them down.

Having the opportunity to practice this technique in a natural environment will help you reach total calmness and harmony with your inner self.

If you feel drawn to the benefits of these activities, our Yoga and Wellness Cruise is the perfect opportunity for you.

Yoga and photography-themed cruises among Star Clippers offering

2020-01-27T10:52:00+00:00

Star Clippers has revealed a series of themed cruises throughout 2020 to help its passengers master a skill while relaxing on voyages to the Mediterranean, South East Asia and the Caribbean.

Yoga with Star Clippers

Groups can take part in yoga sessions on a themed Star Clippers sailing.

The cruises will take place on board its three striking tall ships, Royal Clipper, Star Clipper and Star Flyer, with activities and sessions including yoga, photography, chef masterclasses and even a life coach to help improve mental wellbeing.

Fay McCormack, general manager for Star Clippers UK said: “There is always something of interest happening on board Star Clippers’ tall ships, from climbing the rigging to learning navigational skills, taking part in complimentary water sports, to morning gym.

“Having the speakers, fitness and yoga practitioners on board enhances the experience of a tall ship sailing even more, offering guests the opportunity to relax, improve mind and body or hone up skills.”

Depending on the sailing and availability, Star Clippers is usually able to offer groups of 15 and above special rates.

This includes one free berth for every 15 passengers booked, as well as on board extras such as a complimentary one-hour cocktail party (usually with house wines). The operator is also able to offer pre-purchased group drink packages as an optional extra.

Royal Clipper

Royal Clipper is the largest of the three ships.

Key dates and sailings for groups

  • 27th June - Indonesia (Bali round-trip) with photographer Julie Anne Quarry aboard  Star Clipper
  • 3rd October - Western Mediterranean (Cannes round-trip) with chef Armando Bisceglia aboard Royal Clipper .
  • 3rd October - Thailand (Singapore-Ko Samui) with yoga and meditation instructor Catherine Derrow aboard  Star Clipper
  • 30th October - Eastern Mediterranean (Athens - Malta) with yoga instructor Shannon Carlin aboard  Star Flyer.
  • 4th November - Western Mediterranean (Malta - Malaga) with life coach Kimberly Rich aboard  Star Flyer.

More about the ships

The cruise operator has three fully-crewed ships and a new one currently being built, with each vessel able to drop anchor in smaller harbours and ports which are often untouched by larger cruise ships.

All three ships have teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining, an on-deck tropical bar and a piano bar.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

"The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Travelers on an all-gay cruise with Brand g Vacations pose in front of the Taj Mahal

Courtesy of Brand G Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Aerial shot of Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Apex at sunset

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Aerial shot of Royal Caribbean International cruise ship

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Courtesy of The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

Source Journeys has been planning luxury vacations for LGBTQ travelers for more than 20 years. The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers' masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.
