With a history that dates back to the 16th century, the De Halve Maan Brewery is a family-owned business that brews the Bruges city beer – the Brugse Zot – a strong-tasting, highly fermented brew. The brewery also has an underground pipeline that transports its beer from the brewery to its bottling plant in the suburbs. You can stop by for a pint or tag along on a tour of the brewery.

Recent visitors advised that there are some steep steps involved, but highly recommend the educational 45-minute tour. Reviewers applauded the funny, informative guides and the views from the brewery's rooftop.

The 45-minute brewery tours are offered daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Dutch, French and English. If you purchase your tickets online in advance, you can expect to pay 11 euros (around $12) per adult. If tickets are purchased at the brewery, they cost 12 euros (about $13) per adult. Tickets for children ages 6 to 12 cost 6 euros (a little more than $6). Adult tourgoers can enjoy a sample of the brewery's Brugse Zot Blond beer at the conclusion of the tour. The brewery is located about half a mile south of the Historic Centre of Brugge . For more information, visit De Halve Maan Brewery's website .

DE HALVE MAAN BREWERY TOUR

The only one brewery survived the world war.

the best brewery visit in Belgium

Hidden in the very center of Bruges, nearby the world heritage of Begijnhof, Brugse Zot is produced by De Halve Maan. You can take a brewery visit tour in the heart of Bruges.

BEER PIPELINE IN BRUGES

Just when you enter the building, you will find this pipeline, saying '3276m'. This is an underground beer pipeline to prevent that the beer trucks which carries from the brewery to the bottling place break the road. De Halve Maan wanted to respect the city of Bruges and decided to build up pipeline for the first time in the world. With a crowdfunding campaign, the investment by the Flemish Government and so on, this big project came true and now has done and is actually working.

BELGIUM TRAVEL PLANNING RESOURCES

Getting to Belgium : Fly into one of the main international airports : Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi Brussels South Airport (CRL). Take an international train to Brussels South Station. Or take a ferry to Dover or The Netherlands, then drive or take the train to Belgium.

Getting Around : For the major destinations, the train is by far the best option. You can book your train tickets here . If you’d like to visit smaller places, the most convenient way would be to rent a car. We always use Discover cars , they compare all the rental companies and give you the best rates.

Accommodation : Booking.com is the most popular accommodation platform in Belgium. It’s what I use every single time.

Guided tours : Use Get Your Guide or Viator to find fun tours in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. Or Guruwalk to find free walking tours in multiple destinations.

An important beer in a nation of important beers, Brugse Zot has been a family affair since 1865. The beer is the preserve of the renowned De Halve Maan brewery, (that’s Half Moon, not Half Man), the only brewery in Bruges, the beautiful and historic capital of West Flanders. That makes Brugse Zot the city’s ‘Townbeer’, and luckily it fulfils its role admirably.

Brugse Zot comes in two forms, with the Blond as its flagship, and a Dubbel rounding things out. Quintessentially Belgian, the beer has a big body, with fruity banana notes from the yeast blended with complimentary hops. Secondary fermentation in the bottle leads to a long maturation process and a soft carbonation. It’s a beer that gets better and better.

All sounds pretty clever, right? The beer takes its name from a historical wisecrack about the city’s townsfolk. Brugse Zot means ‘Bruges Fools’, which also explains the jester that adorns the bottles’ label. They might be fools, but they know their beer.

Brugse Zot Beer - Available Now

Our brugse zot range.

Brugse Zot is a golden blond beer with a rich froth and a fruity flavouring. The beer is brewed with four different kinds of malt and two aromatic varieties of hop which give the beer its unique taste.

Brugse Zot Dubbel is a dark brown beer, inclining towards ruby red. It is brewed with six special varieties of malt, which give the beer a rich and distinctive aroma. One can discover the scent of honey, almonds, chocolate and even brown sugar.

In june 2018, De Halve Maan were the first family & Belgian brewery to launch a non-alcoholic speciality beer. To brew Sport Zot, their brewers have developed a unique technique, with which they are able to completely & naturally filter the alcohol out of the beer, without distillation or other processes which may lead to loss of flavour.

North Idaho Breweries: Tour them all from Coeur d’Alene to Moscow

  • Road Trips , Travel

The arrival of spring in the Inland Northwest brought with it a diverse collection of new and revamped local breweries in North Idaho. These craft beer options in the Coeur d’Alene and Moscow areas offer plenty of opportunities to hop on your bike or round up a designated driver and create your own brewery, outdoor adventure road trip this summer.

The Heart of The North

When planning a brewery road trip through majestic North Idaho, the best place to start (or end) is in the recently ranked Top Mountain Town of America*: Coeur d’Alene. In 2011, the Lake City was left void of local brews when Coeur d’Alene Brewing Co. closed its doors. However, over the last three years, five new breweries have opened in the vicinity, four have survived and rumors of more consistently circulate.

While its address says Post Falls, Selkirk Abbey Brewing Co. (6180 E Seltice Way) is a stone’s throw from the Coeur d’Alene city line. Owner Jeff and brewer Steve produce exquisite, award-winning Belgian style beers, such as their flagship Infidel (Belgian Style IPA), their collection of Saisons and their collaboration Belgian coffee porter, Guilt (with DOMA Coffee Roasting Co.). If you time your visit right, you might even catch Jeff pulling some rare brews from the “cellar” for a spontaneous taste test (selkirkabbey.com).

Just a little further into town and north of I-90, Tricksters Brewing (3850 N Schreiber Way) has undergone a recent re-branding. Their new look is enhancing their current line, which includes the solid Bear Trap Brown, and opening the door for Matt, head brewer and owner, to introduce some new brews, like German Kölsch and Vienna Lager (trickstersbrewing.com).

In the heart of midtown sits Slate Creek Brewing Co. (710 N 4 th St.), a little brewery that took the town by storm just over a year ago. Brothers Jason and Ryan brew genuine Northwest beer and promote a hearty outdoor lifestyle. Look for the little green dots denoting current beers on tap, like their nicely balanced Mountain Hop IPA and unique Norse Nectar Pale. They also keep a guest cider on tap for a break from gluten and hops. Look for their production and selection to expand this summer when their newly arrived brew system starts humming (slatecreekbrewing.com).

Mad Bomber Brewing Co. (9265 N Government Way), a collaboration of veterans who served in the Army as bomb disposal technicians, is just a short jog north in Hayden. This nano brewery has become the hang out spot for locals, veterans and visitors alike. Owner, Tom, not only keeps it steady with his core brews – Booby Trap Blonde and Lonely Walk Brown – but also mixes it up with limited batches from their small-scale system. Before visiting, check out their hopping Facebook page for current taps and spontaneous events (madbomberbrewing.com) .

Before leaving the lake behind, consider stopping in at the Crafted Taphouse (523 Sherman Ave) , opening late May/early June on the corner of 6 th and Sherman. Their 3,000-square-foot patio, 50 hand crafted beers on tap and inventive gastro pub menu will make them a hot spot in downtown Coeur d’Alene this summer (facebook.com/CraftedTaphouse).

Just south on i-95, deep in the heart of grain fields and foothills, but also near excellent hiking and mountain biking trails, the college town of Moscow is teeming with great dining and drink spots. Paradise Creek Brewery (245 SE Paradise St) known for their hop-bomb, Over the Hop, and their creamy, roasty Sacred Cow Milk Stout, is just over the state line in Pullman, WA (paradisecreekbrewery.com).

However, the only truly local brewery is the brand new Moscow Brewing Co. (630 N Almon St #130). Owner and brewer Lucas brews up an ever-changing selection of beers, like his Cascadian Dark Ale and Spruce Tip Porter, on a compact 1/2-barrel system just off a cozy, busy tap room. He also offers a cider tap from Whiskey Barrel Cider Co. in Pullman, WA, as well as snacks of locally-made cured meats, breads and cheeses. Due to their ever-increasing popularity, they are also working on financing a 7-barrel brew house by the end of 2014 (moscowbrewing.com).

North Idaho is booming with brewery options that are worth checking out on their own or as a perfect addition to your summertime outdoor adventures. //

North Idaho Craft Beer: A Self-Guided Itinerary

With the second highest concentration of breweries in the state, northern Idaho has a variety of options and flavor profiles to tap into while adventuring in the Idaho panhandle. Consider these stops on your craft beer quest.

town welcome sign

When visiting this college town, do as the locals do and hop between Moscow’s breweries and brewpubs. Start off at Moscow Brewing Company for small batch brews, and ease into the day with this deliciously smooth pale ale.

exterior of brewery

Take a short walk a few blocks south to Hunga Dunga Brewing . With a name like that, you know you’re in for something special. Housed in a repurposed Quonset hut (see the picture above), Hunga Dunga is committed to quality hand-crafted beers that pair well with its fresh, farm-driven menu.

Wrap up the day with a stop by gastropub TAPPED – Taphouse & Kitchen . The menu is filled with seasonal offerings and 25 regional craft beers.

Coeur d’Alene

On to Coeur d’Alene, where visitors can find plenty of craft beer options between playing in the quilted landscape of forest and water.

Start off your Coeur d’Alene beer tour with Tricksters Brewing Co. The must-try Juicebox IPA, a Northwest-style IPA, is a golden copper pour balanced with citrus and tropical fruit and a dry, hoppy finish. Visit on a Friday and you might be lucky enough to try one of their special cask-conditioned beers.

When lunchtime rolls around, don’t miss the local favorite Café Carambola , serving up mid-day plates full of bright, authentic Latin American flavors. Named after the star fruit, you’ll find fresh tropical fruit and comforting takes on Central American cuisine, all infused with sweet and tangy sauces like chimichurri, curry-cilantro-lime and pineapple salsa.

PINT GLASS AND GROWLER

In the afternoon, stroll to midtown Coeur d’Alene to check out Daft Badger Brewing for classic Northwest-style beer in a cozy environment. Grab a seat on the heated outdoor patio to sample a few brews. Try the Badger’s Bounty IPA for a dry, citrusy cold one smoothed out with a piney finish or Josiah’s Revenge Imperial Stout for an approachable yet complex beer rich with cocoa, dried cherries and figs – also available in a bourbon barrel-aged variety if you want to kick it up a notch.

Outside of the breweries themselves, Crafted Tap House + Kitchen is the place to savor a pint of craft beer in Coeur d’Alene with a collection of 50 beers and ciders on tap. The food menu is full of delicious selections – for starters, the house-made pretzel is worth ordering for the red pepper syrup alone.

A quick 10-mile drive west of Coeur d’Alene brings you to Post Falls.

Selkirk Abbey Brewing Company is up first, specializing in Belgian-themed beers and its own unique niche in the Idaho beer scene. From saisons to sours to malts, this is a must stop brewery for Belgian beer fans. The Infidel Imperial IPA is the go-to pint here.

Before indulging in the next brewery, make a stop at  The White House Grill for a taste of some Mediterranean fare. Keep the theme of international flare going with gyros, sea bass, and fresh baked baklava.

pint glass on an outdoor table

Wrap up the day next to the historical Post Falls water tower at Post Falls Brewing Company . Posted above the Spokane River, this brewery has a penchant for the hoppy and malty. Check out the rotating tap handles with plenty of seasonal and limited releases to highlight your visit.

Downtown Wallace

No trip to northern Idaho is complete without at least a day trip to Wallace, Idaho, a.k.a. the “Center of the Universe.”

Wallace Brewing Company and its namesake town have charm and charisma to spare. In a town steeped in so much history – from its roots as a mining town to being the set of major motion pictures –  the beer is no exception. Ask your bartender to tell you more about the stories behind each beer’s historic name. You can even quiz your travel buddies on the historical Idaho images engraved on the bar top. Wallace Brewing’s tap list is small but solid, including the 1910 Black Lager, a universal crowd-pleaser that’s smooth and clean.

beer flight

On the other side of town, which given the size of Wallace means just a few blocks north, grab lunch at City Limits Pub & Grill . City Limits is known for its scotch eggs. Grab an order or two for the table and wash them down with a pint from in-house brewery North Idaho Mountain Brew.

 Sandpoint & Ponderay

Night Sky, Lake Pend Oreille, Sandpoint. Photo Credit: Idaho Tourism

For the northernmost stop on this north Idaho beer exploration, drive up U.S. 95 from Coeur d’Alene to sip and play along Lake Pend Oreille in the scenic towns of Sandpoint and Ponderay.

Tucked near the lake, MickDuff’s Brewing Company has two locations, the original brewpub and the Beer Hall and Tasting Room, making for convenient pit stops as you explore downtown Sandpoint. Catch a game at the brewpub or get competitive over a match of billiards or foosball at the Beer Hall. All that competition will surely make you thirsty. The Lake Paddler Pale, a refreshing Northwest-style pale ale dry hopped with cascade hops, or the Knot Tree Porter, rich and creamy with chocolate and black malt, are solid starters. In addition to the beer, MickDuff’s takes its food menu seriously, offering quality dishes including an American Kobe beef burger.

pouring beer into a pint glass

When you’re ready to grab another bite to eat, head a few miles upstream to Ponderay. Sweet Lou’s has your full party covered with classic dishes and regional twists. Try the bison ribs for a unique protein option to refuel on this final stretch.

pint of beer

Finally, you’ll need to stop by award-winning Laughing Dog Brewery . Laughing Dog is loyal to the four golden ingredients of brewing and has found the sweet spot with this simple, focused approach. In addition to the owner’s adorable yellow lab mascot, Ben, the brewery is known for its Huckleberry Cream Ale – a sweet, refreshing beer brewed with Idaho’s official state fruit. With Ben’s bark of approval on all of the brewery’s releases, you can’t go wrong when it comes time to make your selection.

Cheers to good beer, good views and good people!
