2023 WM Phoenix Open: Top 10 Power Rankings at TPC Scottsdale

If you thought the WM Phoenix Open was a big deal before, you ain’t seen nothing yet in 2023.

Not only is this event a newly-minted designated event by the PGA Tour, which ensures almost all the top stars will be in the field, but the Super Bowl will also be held in Glendale this same weekend.

That’s only about a 30-mile drive between the two if you’re lucky enough to toggle between both big-time events.

Some big names have eschewed playing the WM Phoenix Open in the past due to the slew of other top events on the West Coast Swing, as well as avoiding the spotlight of tens of thousands of fans hounding you on the famed par-3 16th hole.

Not to mention big money events on the DP World Tour this time of year.

That’s not the case anymore.

Eight of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking are at TPC Scottsdale, as well as twenty-two of the top 25.

The field is set at 132 players competing at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course and seeking to make the 36-hole cut of top-65 players and ties.

TPC Scottsdale is a desert course featuring splashes of lush fairways and greens clashing against the brown desert surrounds.

TPC Scottsdale is a course where players can take it pretty low, but its risk-reward factor can also lead to some high numbers.

That’s particularly the case during the closing stretch with water coming into play on the par-5 15th, the famed par-3 16th, the driveable par-4 17th, and the closing par-4 18th.

Bombers do have an advantage at the WM Phoenix Open.

There’s not a ton of trouble off the tee unless you get stifled behind a cactus or other native areas.  Water comes into play off the tee most notably on the 17th and on seven holes altogether.

The greens are generally not too fiery, but hitting proper approach shots to the right tiers is key.

Stats to keep an eye on this week include strokes gained approach, approach proximity from 150-175 yards, and par-5 scoring. It’s essential to take advantage of the par-5s, play the difficult holes around even par and finish the round strong on easy chances at 16 and 17.

The weather forecast for the week is expectedly dry with temperatures in the high 40s to low to upper 70s Fahrenheit. It could be cooler and breezier on the weekend, but expect a lot of low numbers Thursday and Friday.

Let the party begin. Here are this week’s top 10 power rankings:

WM Phoenix Open, Phoenix Open, TPC Scottsdale, PGA Tour, FedEx Cup, Rory McIlroy

I don’t care that Tony Finau has missed five of seven cuts at the WM Phoenix Open. I’m not giving up on him!

We’ve seen him find success at TPC Scottsdale, finishing T-22nd (72-68-70-67) in his debut in 2015. Finau nearly won in 2020, finishing in second place at 17-under (69-66-62-70) and losing to Webb Simpson in a playoff.

"“I guess it’s just golf. I can’t wrap my finger around it, I like the place, I like the energy that this place brings, and I just haven’t performed very well here in the past,” Finau was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020. “But I knew I could change that at any year, any given year, and so far this year I have.”"

He’d like that final round back a few years ago, but he’s proven to be a better closer since then.

Four of Finau’s five career PGA Tour victories have come since 2021. He was thrice a winner last year, and as recent as November at the Cadence Bank Houston Open.

While he’s yet to win in 2023, the pride of Utah has still looked sharp. Finau took T-7th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, T-16th at The American Express, and T-9th at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The 33-year-old has the skill set to play well here. He can’t bomb it on every hole, but there are opportunities to let his power shine.

He’s also an exquisite iron player, as evidenced by ranking 12th on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained approach (.659). He was also fifth in greens in regulation (71.25%) and fourth in proximity from 175-200 yards (29’6”).

The putter is his weakness. Fortunately, TPC Scottsdale’s greens tend to run fairly pure and are far from the most challenging he’ll see this season.

Xander Schauffele, the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Pro Ranking and No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking, headlines the field this week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. What is normally a raucous week on the PGA Tour will be a little quieter thanks to just a small number of fans being present, but the quality of golf shouldn’t be any less. In addition to Schauffele, the field also includes Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson.

The entire Phoenix Open field is broken down below according to the Golfweek/Sagarins and the OWGR.

So far in the 2020-21 Tour season, the average ranking of the winner heading into the week in which he won a PGA Tour event has been 118.88 in the Golfweek/Sagarins and 138.19 in the OWGR.

PGA Tour Power Rankings

Scottie scheffler +500.

The current number-one ranked golfer in OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings) arrives at this week's tournament in rather good form. More specifically, Scheffler has accumulated three top-six finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour, including a win at the 2023 Hero World Challenge in December.

It should also be noted that Scheffler won the last two Waste Management Phoenix Opens (2022, 2023).

Justin Thomas +1400

The 2022   PGA Championship winner arrives at this week's event on the heels of six consecutive top-13 finishes (DP World and PGA Tours combined), including a third-place result at the 2024 American Express three weeks ago.

Thomas certainly checks the box for me when it comes to previous event/course history. Since 2019, Thomas has played the Waste Management Phoenix Open five times. In those five events just mentioned, Thomas has accumulated five top 13 finishes, including a third place result in 2020.

Jordan Spieth +2200

Jordan Spieth has accumulated two consecutive top-six finishes on the PGA Tour, including a third-place result at the 2024 Sentry last month.

In relation to this week's currently listed 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open field, in the last 50 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth ranks 14th in bogey avoidance and third in par five scoring.

Max Homa +1600

Homa has accumulated three top-14 finishes in his last four tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a 13th place result at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open.

Wyndham Clark +4000

Last week, the 2023 U.S. Open champion fired an impressive final round 60 at the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am en route to his third victory on the PGA Tour. Clark finished tenth at the 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Sam Burns +2200

Sam Burns has accumulated three top-16 finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour, including a sixth place result at the 2024 American Express. Additionally, Burns finished sixth at the 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Xander Schauffele +1100

The talented American has accumulated three top-ten finishes in his last four tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a ninth-place result at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago.

Byeong-Hun An +4000

Byeong-Hun An has accumulated two top-four finishes in his last three events played on the PGA Tour, including a second-place result at the 2024 Sony Open five weeks ago.

Beau Hossler +6500

Beau Hossler has accumulated two consecutive top-14 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a sixth place result at the 2024 Famers Insurance Open.

Hossler has posted a quality finish at TPC Scottsdale previously. Hossler finished 14th at the 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Adam Hadwin +5000

Adam Hadwin has accumulated three top-14 finishes in his last five tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a second-place result at the 2023 Shriners Children's Open in October. Hadwin finished tenth at the 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

2024 Houston Open Power Rankings: Top 10 Golfers To Watch At Memorial Park

T his tournament got an added shot of adrenaline when the best player on planet Earth, Scottie Scheffler, committed early to this event. He's now going for the hat trick (3 wins in a row), and despite a few other players near the top that are playing well, he'll once again be the prohibitive favorite and may be less than +500 on the oddsboard.

I hope that these rankings have become a staple in your weekly preparation and the place where you start your research for the week. I have carefully evaluated the field to project course fits and expected results, in an attempt to give you a glimpse at how my brain operates when it comes to handicapping golf. In addition to my Top 10 rankings, I will provide a brief summary for each player to give some reasoning behind their rankings. As always, thank you for your support, and good luck.

Let's get is started!

#10. Jake Knapp

The California-blonde locks are making there way to Texas and the fans at Memorial Park will be excited to catch a glimpse of the smooth-swinging Jake Knapp. Anytime a player can win at the Mexico Open, but also perform awesome at PGA National and Torrey Pines, it makes it difficult to pigeon-hole a course fit.

Maybe he is just that good? His confidence is certainly at an all-time high after winning a few weeks ago and then receiving high praise from Rory McIlroy. Knapp possesses effortless power, a skill which is shared by many of the former champions at Memorial Park. It will be fun to see if he can continue his great run.

#9. Si Woo Kim

Si Woo Kim has grinded his way into becoming one of the most accurate players off the tee in all of professional golf. He's been hitting 70% of fairways over his last 24 rounds which is a good 10% better than Tour Average, but is still maintaining a respectable 169 mph ball speed on average.

Kim finished in a tie for 6th place at THE PLAYERS and once again flashed signs of brilliance around Pete Dye's famed track in Northeast Florida. In all typically hinges on the Putter and a dash of much-needed patience for Si Woo Kim. If he can continue to pound fairways, this should be just the type of event where he looks to capitalize.

#8. Tom Hoge

There is one player who has been statistically the best iron player in the world for the past six months and his name is NOT Scottie Scheffler I'm of course talking about Thomas Hoge! He has now gained strokes on Approach in fourteen consecutive starts on the PGA Tour which is quite remarkable.

His exacting iron play should go well in Texas where the wind can often whip through these flat, exposed golf courses like Memorial Park. He still has his flaws, and despite all those insanely good weeks with his Approach-play, Hoge has failed to finish inside the top-6 in any tournament. I think this could finally be the week he finds himself near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday and he's looking to parlay his iron plays into a big paycheck in Texas.

#7. Jason Day

I spent a good bit of time following Jason Day, and his abundance of fabric, around TPC Sawgrass and THE PLAYERS Championship. He finished the week with a disappointing 35th place result and he really couldn't get his irons going like he had during the California Swing.

There's something Jason Day loves about Texas though. He's played this event in three consecutive seasons with middling results, but his continued attendance tells me there is something about Memorial Park that suits his eye. Every week it seems like he excels in one part of his game, but then something else slips. If he can put it all together one week, we could see another victory this season.

#6. Keith Mitchell

It was a tough Sunday at the Valspar Championship for those like myself who were sweating a Kieth Mitchell ticket. The absolute high of holing out for Eagle to garner a solo Saturday night lead quickly wore off with a barrel of Sunday bogeys. That said, it shouldn't deter you too much after one bad round because Mitchell has been flushing it.

He ranks top-5 in the field in Greens in regulation and strokes gained approach over the last 24 rounds played. He's also been particularly good with his long irons, ranking 4th in the field in proximity gained on approach shots over 200+ yards. He's played well here before and he's in great form. Could it finally be his week?

#5. Sahith Theegala

There are numerous players in my rankings this week who have been searching for some confidence with the Putter, Sahith Theegale is not one of them. He's been rolling it beautifully on the greens and ranks 2nd in the field in terms of strokes gained Putting over the last 30 rounds played.

He's on the precipice of becoming a bonafide star on the PGA Tour, and they could use more great players who bring a little flare and personality to the game like Theegala. He finished inside the top 10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the PLAYERS Championship. Theegala should be riding high headed to Houston. He can get as hot as any player when he gets it going.

#4. Tony Finau

The anomaly that is trying to predict Tony Finau continues this week and I am left once again perplexed. Finau arrives this week with sights set this week on defending his 2023 Houston Open crown after he won last year by four shots. His approach play statistics for the last two months has been fantastic but he has not been able to manifest that into the results he wanted.

There have been numerous rough patches in his career with the putter, but what I have seen this season is borderline hopeless. As we know and watched with Scottie Scheffler for nearly a full season, no ballstriking prowess can completely cover up a putrid putter. It's possible that it returns this week on these relatively simplistic greens at Memorial Park, but I have to see it before I believe it.

#3. Will Zalatoris

I was surprised to see that Will Zalatoris has not previously competed in the Houston Open, but I believe this is a golf course that should suit his game perfectly. Zalatoris should feel right at home in Texas, and despite a lackluster performance at The PLAYERS, it would appear he has regained some of the ballstriking prowess that he leveraged to burst onto the scene as a Rookie and immediately show up at Major Championships.

Zalatoris still managed to gain +2.2 strokes on Approach at the PLAYERS even while missing the cut. That speaks to what TPC Sawgrass can do to you. One or two bad swings and it can erase an entire day of good play. I fully expect Zalatoris to rebound this week and will make it four straight weeks gaining at least +2 on approach. We already know what he is gearing up for next month in Georgia!

#2. Wyndham Clark

I generally feel like we, as a community of hardcore professional golf fans, move too slowly when adjusting our rankings on players who are performing at a level above their baseline. I say this because I believe Wyndham Clark may just be a top-3 player in the world right now. Clark has finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler in his last two tournaments played and has been on the cusp of victory on both occasions.

He's got something intangible, I call it guts! His talent and skill from a ballstriking standpoint does not hold water to Scheffler, but Clark gets the absolute MOST out of his peak rounds and can catch fire with his putter. He's one of the longest players on the PGA Tour, a particular asset that should be well rewarded at Memorial Park. He's too good to continue to underate and underestimate.

#1. Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler continues his run as the best ball striker on the planet by a wide margin, and it might be time to say it, "Happy learned how to putt!". He won back to signature series events in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS. The train is running full steam ahead and the next stop is 3-in-a-row!

Scheffler has finished inside the top-10 in the past two seasons at the Houston Open, including a 2nd place in 2022. There is really not much else you can say about this guy, except to just sit back and enjoy the show. He's by a large margin the best ballstriker on the PGA Tour and if he can continue to build on his newly found confidence with the mallet style putter...it feels like a runaway train!

Best of luck this week Rotoballer family!

NFL bans controversial hip-drop tackle for 2024 season, makes change to challenge rule

The nfl has three new rules for 2024.

2023 HOPE Global Forum

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The NFL adopted three new playing rules that will be in effect for the 2024 season. Here are the three approved by the league at the Annual League Meeting on Monday.

  • 1. By Detroit; amends Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1, to protect a club's ability to challenge a third ruling following one successful challenge.
  • 5. By Competition Committee; amends Rule 14, Section 5, Article 2, to allow for an enforcement of a major foul by the offense prior to a change of possession in a situation where there are fouls by both teams.
  • 8. By Competition Committee; amends Rule 12, Section 2, to eliminate a potentially dangerous tackling technique.

Hip-drop tackle

It is a foul if a player uses the following technique to bring a runner to the ground:

  • Grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner's leg at or below the knee.

The penalty will be considered unnecessary roughness, which will be 15 yards and an automatic first down.

Getting a third challenge

A team will be permitted a third challenge if it is successful on at least one or both of its challenges. If a team wins both challenges, a fourth challenge will not be permitted.

The maximum amount of challenges a team can have is three in a game.

Double foul (with change of possession)

If the team last in possession does not have "clean hands" when it establishes possession, the penalties offset, and the down is replayed at the previous spot. "Clean hands" meaning no infringements.

If both teams foul after the last change of possession (double foul after change of possession), or the offense commits an unnecessary roughness or an unsportsmanlike conduct foul before the change of possession, the penalties are offset, and the team last in possession shall retain the ball at the spot where its foul would be enforced if it was the only foul.

Here are the rules that weren't approved by the NFL -- or put to table for a later vote or at the next league meeting in May.

  • 2. By Philadelphia; amends Rule 9, Section 2, Article 2, to eliminate the first touch spot after the receiving team possesses the ball  (not approved)
  • 3. By Philadelphia; amends Rule 6, Section 1, Article 1, to permit a team to maintain possession of the ball after a score by substituting one offensive play (4th and 20 from the kicking team's 20-yard line) for an onside kickoff attempt (not approved) .
  • 4. By Indianapolis; amends Rule 15, Section 3, to permit a coach or replay official (inside of two minutes) to challenge any foul that has been called ( Colts withdrew proposal) .
  • 6. By Competition Committee; amends Rule 15, Section 3, Article 3, to include a ruling of a passer down by contact or out of bounds before throwing a pass as a reviewable play  (not approved) .
  • 7. By Competition Committee; amends Rule 15, Section 3, Article 9, to allow a replay review when there is clear and obvious visual evidence that the game clock expired before any snap  (not approved) .
  • 9. By Competition Committee; amends Rule 12, Section 2, Article 6, to expand the crackback prohibition to players who go in motion and move beyond the center to block a defender at or below the knee  (not approved) .
  • 10. By Competition Committee; for one year only, amends Rule 6, to create a new form of a free kick play that is designed to: (1) resemble a typical scrimmage play by aligning players on both teams closer together and restricting movement to reduce space and speed; and (2) promote more returns. Permits the Replay Official automatically review whether a free kick legally touched the ground or a receiving team player in the landing zone (put to table for later vote) .

Power Rankings: Valspar Championship

If you already haven’t taken the time to confirm, the answer is yes. Someone other than Scottie Scheffler will win the Valspar Championship this week. No doubt that there was at least one entrant in the field who was curious that he wasn’t in it after the world’s top-ranked talent won consecutive tournaments.

A larger grouping than originally was planned is assembling on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. For the explanation, details of the host course and more, continue reading below the ranking of those projected to contend.

As of Monday afternoon, the field stands at 155 but alternates will not be called unless it drops below 144. If necessary to achieve the same objective, this provision also will apply to next week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and the Valero Texas Open the week after that.

The Copperhead Course is a par 71 with five par 3s and a customary set of four par 5s. The anchor leg of the Florida Swing stood as the hardest of the series in relation to par a year ago when the field averaged 71.935. That also easily was highest among all par 71s throughout the 2022-23 season. The challenge isn’t unusual, though. That it averaged below par a few weeks later in the spring of 2021 and in its more familiar slot in March of 2022 was a surprise.

No matter what, the parkland track has teeth, so all red numbers will have felt well-earned. Although Copperhead can stretch to 7,340 yards, ball-striking is at a premium because overseeded rough is allowed to grow to 3½ inches and overseeded Bermudagrass greens average 5,800 square feet. The putting surfaces also are allowed to reach 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter.

Then there’s the Snake Pit that closes the inward half. Nos. 16, 17 and 18 collaborate for a par-4-3-4 test that averaged +0.593 strokes to par last year. A proper goal for the wannabe winner will be to arrive at it with the lead so as to swing over it unscathed to paydirt. Taylor Moore played it in bogey-free, 1-under for the week, with his only birdie coming on the par-4 16th in the finale.

A strong start also could be imperative. Favorable conditions with manageable breezes are expected for the opening round. That changes considerably as the threat for rain and storms encroach by Friday when winds could gust in excess of 30 mph for a few hours. It’ll calm relatively on the weekend. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 70s.
