How to add apple carplay to your car.

Simplify your commute by adding CarPlay to your dash.

Quick Links

Option 1: get an oem retrofit, option 2: replace your car's head unit, bluetooth is an option.

Apple CarPlay makes it easy to use iPhone apps like Google Maps or Spotify in your car's center console, saving you from mounting your smartphone on your windshield or dashboard. But what if your car doesn't support CarPlay?

CarPlay first appeared in 2014, and many auto manufacturers started offering iPhone connectivity around that time. Like most new features, this was an optional add-on for new cars. Many manufacturers have since made CarPlay a standard feature.

If your car was manufactured after 2014 but lacks the add-on package for CarPlay, you may be able to retrofit it using an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) upgrade. To find out for sure, contact a service center that specializes in servicing your particular brand of car.

Related: All Vehicles Compatible with Apple CarPlay as of Feb. 2022

Some manufacturers that have offered retrofits include Hyundai, Mazda, and Ford but not for all models.

The upgrade may only require a software patch to unlock CarPlay, or you may be offered the option of changing the hardware to enable the functionality. The cost of the upgrade will vary depending on what needs to be done, but you should be able to get a free quote to find out before committing.

If your car is older than 2014, your OEM doesn't offer an upgrade, or the cost of an OEM retrofit seems too much, you could also try replacing the head unit in your car. Many head units are now fully compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with additional features like compatibility with reversing cameras or object sensors often bundled in too.

The biggest hurdle you'll have to overcome is to find a head unit that's compatible with your particular make and model. Contacting a local car audio expert is the best way to find out what your options are, but it may also be the priciest.

Your options include high-end name brands like the MVH-AC251BT from Pioneer (around $450) or cheaper models like the BVCP9700A from BOSS  (around $250). If possible, head to a showroom and try a demo unit before you buy to ensure you're happy with the end result.

Pioneer MVH-AV251BT Digital Multimedia Video Receiver with 7" Hires Touch Panel Display, Apple CarPlay, Android AUT, Built-in Bluetooth, and SiriusXM-Ready (Does not Play CDs)

This Pioneer head unit is both Apple CarPlay and Android Audio ready, with built-in Bluetooth, SiriusXM compatibility, and a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen.

If you're willing to put in some research, you may find the second-hand market to be the most cost-effective option for adding CarPlay to an older vehicle. Use marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, but remember to stay safe and avoid scams .

If your car already has Bluetooth connectivity, there's a good chance you can already use most smartphone functions wirelessly. This includes making and taking phone calls, getting turn-by-turn directions, and listening to music or podcasts.

CarPlay is a step-up though, providing a visual aid on top of existing audio integration. Once you have it, find out how you can customize the display .

Apple CarPlay suggestions

I am a new owner to a 2016 Dodge Journey R/T. I have been doing a fair amount of research on how to achieve some level of Apple CarPlay without needing to take out a second mortgage.

I have heard about modules that can be used with your factory system, this would be preferable to keep all the original controls over the various features i have like heated steering and seats.

I am seeking the opinion and suggestion of others here on what would be the lowest cost option of adding Apple CarPlay to my Journey. I am not picky on if it has to be wired or wireless, or controlled through an aftermarket module or something like that. Even if i had to replace the head unit to the 8.4AN but if there’s assurances i would not loose any current functionality of my vehicle.

I have the Uconnect 8.4n with Garmin CTP16 nav, which right now is not showing streets except for major highways (interstates). The cost to keep the maps updated would be better spent to use Waze or another nav software through CarPlay.

thank you all in advance and i am loving this Journey already and it’s only been a few hours with it

What features of Apple  Car-Play do you require that 6.4 w/o navi doesn't already have? The dumb moment: Let me just get this out there: Why not get a good phone mount and get a Tablet or use your phone to supplement the existing 4.2 or 8.4 display. This will cost near zero if you already own the phone mount and phone, and will provide greater function that Android Auto as you can use your phone in its entirety without the gimmicky safety limitations of Android Auto not letting you text and stuff... I mean, will android auto let you watch netflix while you drive? Probably not (as its a stupid and dangerous idea) but a phone in a phone mount can! I don't know if android still has this feature, but my old HTC Evo had a car mode which gave only 6 icons. (kind of a precursor to Android auto) I know that's not the point of you asking, hearing someone tell you the obvious. So- Let's dive right into what you want to hear!

What I suggest investigating is to somehow splice into the reverse camera wiring and run an aftermarket Android Auto module. there would be no touchscreen compatibility from the 8.4, but you could do screen mirroring, and splice in your audio from the aux jack using a 3.5mm y-splitter. I think, (and this is pure speculation) that all you'd need to do to spoof this is have a dedicated switch on the side of the console, when flipped on it would sent 12v to the reverse signal wire (which triggers the screen to change over the reverse camera composite video input. As there is no power to the reverse camera, there would be no video signal. (if the signal wire goes generate a video signal from the rear camera, then use the same (or separate switch) to toggle a composite switch box- So- when this switch is toggled, have the aftermarket Android Auto unit send video signal through the reverse camera signal wires, either through y-splice or via the aforementioned composite switching box. This is based on some research i did when I wanted to add 4.2 navigation+rearview upgrades which would toggle on-off in a funny annolog fashion whenever the 'screen off button' was pressed. I understood they were basically switching a single push button with a 4-way cycle switch which cycled between 1. screen normal 2. screen off (it just streamed a video of a black image) 3. Video feed from Garmin's screen 4. video feed from reverse camera. If there exists an android auto auto autoauto module that just sends out video signal, then you'd be able to somehow send it through the reverse camera line. You might get 'check surroundings for saftey' overlay but- hey. almost there! ____ Lastly, I just wanted to mention that on the Chevy VOLT (my other car) there was a crazy guy who went all in on upgrading the touchscreen to android auto. It ended up using a raspberry-pi and way too much programming to get the touch screen to work mostly seamlessly. Good luck on your pursuit.

And one more thing, there seems to be more information on this on the Challenger/charger forums. you might find some info on the Durango forums too.  Although this thread goes nowhere, allegedly someone got it to work. Maybe the Charger and dodger are similar and this process  will work? https://www.chargerforumz.com/threads/install-uconnect-from-2017-into-2015.182586/page-2 Personally, This is a rabbit hole I'd not go down.

Ontario has some very strict laws on Handsfree devices and even the notion of reaching to touch an iphone that is mounted, while technically is legal to do, still has caused some to be pulled over and ticketed anyway under the Drive, Hand-Held Device rule here. Being a CMV driver, I'd rather not take the risk at all and stick to touching a screen if need be that is a part of my vehicle. I'll take a look there and see. Thank you for the information and ideas

I am looking to add CarPlay to my Cherokee. Looked at NUMEROUS sites, this one seems the easiest and least intrusive for the Jeep.  Just waiting for them to get more in..  Not even sure they support the DJ, but it’s worth a look.

I saw this as well. Mind you, between the various reviews you will find on Google of them, and the complaints on the BBB, I would be very careful. I would only trust it if someone came back stating they installed it and it works great. But based on the reviews I have seen so far, it has been nothing but trouble for others.

In my 09 DJ I pulled out the factory system (UConnect would not work with our new iPhones) and installed a Kenwood unit.  Works like a charm.  Wireless CarPlay, better sound, better unit. Lost nothing as far as wheel controls, etc.  never had HVAC,etc on factory unit.  I went through Crutchfield....

Ontario driver here too:

For Apple CarPlay/Android interface, to my best knowledge, there is only one, although sold by two different companies. It comes down to a matter of price.

Here's a video of it already installed and working.

It can be purchased on Ali Express or Italy on this dealer

I'll buy it before summer as other members on Facebook Groups also purchased and I liked the videos as well.

See my other post. I would AVOID THIS SELLER.  You need to disassemble your screen to install a circuit board, which they don’t tell you!  No help from China customer service.  Buyer beware!

Actually I did purchase this week! It's already in Ontario and ready for delivery.

I'll be installing it next week with a lot of pictures to be taken.

I'll post the results and up's and downs from this solution!

A lot of updates! I'll keep posting as get more experience...

  • Unit arrived.
  • Is a newer generation that allows wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
  • Installation was pretty straight forward, although I had and should investigate the microphone setup. I'll explain further down.
  • Connection to backup camera is already done through the cable - there's more options for extra cameras or after market.
  • All you need is to press the back button to change between Uconnect and the Interface.
  • It DOESN"T need any mod to the screen. you just plug the screen "LVDS" to the cable supplied.

Bravo sir! I take it because the screen is using the reverse video input, no touch screen features work?) Needless to say, even if there are some drawbacks, you've casually did the impossible, and brought the Journey up to par with modern cars infotainment.  Bravo!!!

Very impressive install, great pics. No hand cuts from dash work,  also amazing ?.

Does the factory console  USB jack stay functional and the second corded USB input in pic act as another input?

No issues with heated seats and heated steering wheel ,  you have them correct.

If you don’t have a factory back up camera already and only bumper back up sensors;  you can plug and play an aftermarket cam without any extra programming ?  With screen mirroring and data so cheap now, you could just run Waze which has reasonable traffic updates ; forget about the factory nav altogether.  Nice to have both options.  Thanks again for all the info.

If you don't have factory camera, this system has the RCA plug and the wiring. Additionally has in both cases extra video inputs for front camera and aftermarket parking sensors.

The only question I have is, does it require you to remove the screen? Ok, one more question, where does that box on the kit go...behind the screen?

Otherwise, incredibly cool!

I had to remove the screen so I could pass cables and install.

I installed it behind the screen. No modifications... Just plug , test to be safe and put back.

I think is a late but good solution.

Support is great form the Italian supplier. I don't find these latest units being sold elsewhere, including AliExpress.

I assume that I, not the interface, did something wrong with the OEM Mic. I couldn't get it to work. That's why I installed the supplied one.

Note that using the supplied mic you can still use the VR button on the left steering wheel control. Press it and triggers either the Apple Siri or Google assistant. It does also activates the Uconnect VR but i say the command, the interface/phone listens and processes. Then i just press VR again to cancel the Uconnect attempt.

Things I don't like: The next/previous track don't work as it's connected via AUX1. I'm playing still with settings on phone, android auto and the interface as I don't like the interface connecting and showing up on screen as soon as i get into the car. I would prefer to idle and only starting when i press the back button which is the way to change systems.

Do you get limited to using your phone for music, or can you use the interface while using your car's radio?

As far my experience goes, when using the interface there's no radio. I either use my phone's music on the microSD and native music player that shows up in Android Auto, or just use Amazon Music which is not heavy on data.

That would be a reason for me to think about it. I guess I could let the SiriusXM subscription for this car go, and stream from my phone...

Any need to splice wires?

Cool

No wiring striping at all specially if use the supplied microphone.

I do have and use Sirius on the car. But note that we also have the Sirius XM app.... and Sirius sounds BETTER via the app.

Agreed. And the app allows you to move between car and house listening to a specific show (CBS Sports Radio shows for me in the mornings...)

And I can always keep the other subscriptions in the account active. I am very tempted to spend the US $400 on it

A Dodge emblem on the front of a car

Does the Dodge Journey Have Apple CarPlay?

When the Dodge Journey hit the market, more than 10 years ago, families rejoiced. It offered a unique mesh of capability and felt as though it was one part SUV and one part minivan. Fast forward to 2020, and the Dodge Journey is back for another year of production.

But the crossover competition is steep, and Dodge hasn’t made any generational changes to the Journey. Some worry the Journey is showing its age, and you may be wondering if it at least keeps up with current connectivity technologies. So, does the new 2020 Dodge Journey have Apple CarPlay?

Since not much has changed, what’s under the hood?

For drivers who enjoy the curves of the road, the @Dodge Journey GT offers a high-performance suspension for a firmer ride. pic.twitter.com/aaMl1efBmv — Dodge Cares (@dodgecares) January 24, 2020

Don’t expect any remarkable enhancements under the hood. The Dodge Journey will only offer one engine, the 2.4L I4. The 172 horsepower engine is married to a four-speed automatic transmission. In today’s performance standards, you’ll find most powertrains feature six-speed automatic transmission or more.

The Journey’s power won’t knock your socks off. It won’t save you tons in gas money either. The EPA rates the 2020 Dodge Journey with a combined 21 mpg, which isn’t terribly impressive. You’ll also lose AWD options for the Journey in 2020.

What’s it like on the inside?

In-floor storage of the @Dodge #Journey doubles as a cooler for the ultimate tailgate accessory – just add ice. pic.twitter.com/f6iO5J0LNx — FCA-North America (@FiatChrysler_NA) September 19, 2019

The Dodge Journey is one of the very few compact crossovers with third-row seating as standard. New this year, Dodge narrows the trim levels down to two – SE Value and Crossroad.

There are roomy cargo options, with plenty of fold-flat capabilities. With all seats in the upright positions, you’ll have a limited 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Folded to a flat position will provide 37 cubic feet. Fold the second row into the stowed position, and you’ll enjoy 67.6 cubic feet of storage area behind the front seats.

Dodge Journey technology and infotainment features

Considering the Dodge Journey is relatively unchanged for 10 straight years, you’re probably wondering if the tech and infotainment are up to par. The base model will provide you with a 4.3-inch touchscreen and entry-level audio extras.

Upgrades can add in SiriusXM radio, a CD player, auxiliary and USB ports. If you want the 8.4-inch screen, navigation, Uconnect (voice command), and Bluetooth connectivity, you can only enjoy those with Crossroad models. Adding in the extras is easier this year with Dodge bundling the options into a suite they call the Popular Equipment Group .

Will the Dodge Journey to get a performance-focused replacement in 2022? https://t.co/AeBjSpkCB3 pic.twitter.com/ZQc9xP167r — Autoblog (@therealautoblog) November 25, 2019

What about Apple CarPlay connectivity?

Even at the highest-level trim, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are part of the configurations. This may be a deal-breaker for many consumers.

Having the ability to make and receive both calls and texts, all hands-free and with voice command, is more than a luxury. It’s safe driving. Many competitors offer both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as base-level standard features these days. For anyone considering a Dodge Journey, you’ll have to pursue aftermarket install options or forgo the connectivity tech altogether.

Does the Dodge Journey have driver assistance features?

The short answer is yes. The 2020 Dodge Journey does offer a few driver aids. Every trim level configuration, including the base model, will come standard with a backup camera and parking sensors.

However, if you’re looking for adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, or lane-keeping assistance, you won’t find any of them available for the Journey.

It’s not all bad, and for many on a budget with several passengers to haul, the Dodge Journey is a perfect fit. It’s still, hands-down, the most affordable crossover out there with three rows. You’ll notice the price tag is thousands less than others in its segment.

The SE Value trim level starts at $24,990, and the well-equipped Crossroad is only $30,090. But remember, you will get what you pay for when you drive a Journey off the lot. You’ll forgo some of the fun tech and extras that almost every other SUV offers, including the Apple CarPlay connectivity .

Which 2018 Cars Have Apple CarPlay?

Apple CarPlay is a popular feature that allows you to link your smartphone with your vehicle and use select apps on the car’s infotainment system. Each year, more automotive brands adopt the technology and/or make it available in additional models.

General Motors

According to Apple, CarPlay is a “smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car.” You can use the technology for navigation, messaging, and music, among other convenient features, without having to take your eyes off the road. For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay?

Apple provides a website that attempts to keep track of vehicles that offer CarPlay. However, with new 2018 models arriving regularly, it’s not necessarily up to date. Additionally, it’s a global list, which includes brands and vehicles that don’t exist on our shores. For these reasons, it’s difficult to determine whether or not your future vehicle has the service enabled. We’ve done the research for you to provide a comprehensive and accurate list of all 2018 models with Apple CarPlay, including models that have yet to arrive at dealerships.

Most major automakers offer at least a few models with Apple CarPlay , and some have the feature available in nearly every car in their lineup, including Audi , BMW , Buick , Cadillac , Chevrolet , Ford , GMC , Mercedes-Benz , Porsche , Volkswagen , and others. Still others, like Nissan , Infiniti , and Jeep , are just beginning to adopt the technology.

There are some automakers that don’t offer Apple CarPlay on any models. Brands like Jaguar , Land Rover , Mazda , Toyota , and Lexus use their own technology or other third-party services instead of CarPlay.

Keep in mind that certain models in this slideshow may come standard with Apple CarPlay, while others only have the service on select trims or as part a package that costs extra. This list does not include cars that we don’t cover at U.S. News.

Connect iPhone to CarPlay

Set up CarPlay by connecting your iPhone and your vehicle using your vehicle’s USB port or its wireless capability.

Start your car, then make sure Siri is on .

Connect your iPhone to your car:

If your car supports CarPlay with a USB cable: Plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon. Be sure to use an Apple USB Cable.

If your car supports CarPlay both wirelessly and with a USB cable: Plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. The next time you attempt to connect your iPhone to CarPlay, an alert on your iPhone allows you to connect wirelessly.

If your car supports only wireless CarPlay: Press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on. Then, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your car. Check your car manual for more information.

Note: After connecting to CarPlay on some electric vehicles, use the Maps app to identify the vehicle for EV routing. See Set up electric vehicle routing in Maps on iPhone .

On some vehicle models, CarPlay Home appears automatically when you connect iPhone.

If CarPlay Home doesn’t appear, select the CarPlay logo on your vehicle’s display.

2018 Dodge Journey

2018 dodge journey

Select a year

  • Lows Underpowered engine choices, ponderous handling, substandard interior materials.
  • Verdict The 2018 Dodge Journey provides budget pricing and a reasonable amount of space to haul people and cargo, but most rivals best it in comfort and convenience features.

What's New for 2018?

Dodge hasn’t changed much on the mid-size Journey for 2018, but it has simplified the lineup by dropping the Crossroad Plus trim and has made last year’s optional third-row seat standard for 2018. Otherwise, a new 19-inch wheel design that Dodge calls Black Noise is now available on the Crossroad trim, and the brand’s popular Blacktop package—gloss-black exterior mirrors, grille, wheels, and roof rails—is now available on SE, SXT, and GT models.

Original MSRP:

  • SE: $24,390
  • SXT: $28,290
  • Crossroad: $29,390
  • GT: $34,490

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission. Some extra cash can score you a more up-to-date 3.6-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic, but even that combination lags behind the competition in acceleration. We’ve never tested a four-cylinder Journey, but we can confidently say that its 173 horsepower won’t be enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model we tested was the slowest among its competitors. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available with the V-6. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling and unresponsive transmission leave it far from achieving top marks for drivability. It wallows in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of this softness, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, but its simple controls are easy to use. Fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially disappointing. We’d prefer more support from the soft and flat front seats. The second-row split bench is accommodating enough to seat three across. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system with its larger 8.4-inch screen incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup uses a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. The upgraded system adds SiriusXM radio, a CD player, and MP3 capability. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a single USB port up front.

Edmunds' Expert Review

2018 dodge journey apple car play

  • Extra versatility provided by standard three-row seat
  • Low price for the segment
  • Lacks many modern safety and convenience features, even in top trims
  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Disappointing and outdated base engine and transmission
  • Handling and drivability lag behind competitors

Vehicle overview

The Dodge Journey could very well be the car that time forgot. It debuted back in 2009 and has been pretty much the same vehicle since. While this longevity is admirable and speaks to the inherent goodness of the Journey's design concept, there's no denying that it's behind the times in quite a few areas.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2018 Dodge Journey SE 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

As in previous years, the 2018 version of the Journey has three rows and a low price, but it lacks quite a few of the safety features buyers might expect, even when fully optioned. Its base engine is a truly underwhelming four-cylinder paired to an outdated four-speed automatic, and the combo results in subpar fuel economy. A stronger V6 is available, but even so equipped the Journey can't keep up with other three-row SUVs.

It's not all bad news for the Journey. We like the ride quality, and the seats are comfortable all around. The 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system included on upper trims is also a solid system, although it sadly has not been upgraded to the latest version that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

The Journey will get you where you're going, and will do so for less money than many competitors. But overall we think you'll be happier with vehicles such as the Kia Sorento, GMC Acadia or new Volkswagen Tiguan.

Edmunds' Expert Rating

Trim tested.

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our first drive of the 2014 Dodge Journey SXT Plus (3.6L V6 | 6-speed automatic | AWD).

NOTE: Since this test was conducted, the current Dodge Journey has received some revisions, including an improved infotainment interface and standard third-row seating. Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's Dodge Journey, however.

Acceleration

Drivability, seat comfort, ride comfort, noise & vibration, ease of use, getting in/getting out, which journey does edmunds recommend, 2018 dodge journey models.

All four Journey trims come standard with front-wheel drive and, excluding the GT, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (173 hp, 166 lb-ft of torque) paired with a four-speed automatic. Opting for all-wheel drive (or the front-wheel-drive Journey GT) gets you a 3.6-liter V6 (283 hp, 260 lb-ft of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is also available as a stand-alone option for the SXT and Journey trims.

Standard feature highlights for the Journey SE include 17-inch steel wheels, a height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40-split second-row seats (with slide and recline), dual-zone climate control, keyless ignition and entry, and a six-speaker sound system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface.

Options packages include the Connectivity package (Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, voice commands and a leather-wrapped steering wheel), the Popular Equipment package (three-zone temperature control with rear-seat vents, a conversation mirror, overhead console storage, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel) and the Comfort/Convenience package (a power-adjustable driver seat).

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels and contents of the Connectivity and Popular Equipment packages. A Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen package gets you the desirable 8.4-inch touchscreen plus adds three-zone automatic climate control, aimable interior lamps, overhead console storage, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. The SXT's Premium package adds satellite radio, a conversation mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel and the power-adjustable driver seat.

The Dodge Journey Crossroad comes with 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels and the contents of the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen package. Further options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, a premium six-speaker stereo system with subwoofer, navigation, a sunroof and the Driver Convenience package (a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and a universal garage door opener).

The range-topping GT trim gets 19-inch alloys, remote start, a security alarm, leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, and the premium stereo system. Additional options are largely the same as for the Crossroad, but a Trailer Tow Prep package, which adds a hitch and four-pin wiring connector, is also available.

What Cars Work With Apple Car Keys?

Car Keys is a feature that lets you add keys from a compatible vehicle to your Apple Wallet , then unlock, lock, and start the vehicle with your iPhone or Apple Watch . This isn’t a ubiquitous CarPlay feature because it relies on near-field communication (NFC) technology that most cars don’t have. Some NFC-enabled vehicles with CarPlay support it, but it’s a much shorter list.

Here are the cars that work with Apple CarPlay and Car Keys:

  • 2021 - 2023 1 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 2 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 3 Series
  • 2021 - 2023 4 Series

Can You Add CarPlay to a Vehicle That Doesn’t Have It?

You can add CarPlay to a car without it, but the options are limited. The only ways to add CarPlay are through a firmware update or replacing the head unit. Firmware updates that add CarPlay functionality are rare, though, and replacing the head unit , which is also sometimes referred to as the stereo, receiver or radio, isn’t always possible.

Suppose your vehicle has a touchscreen infotainment system , and the manufacturer added CarPlay functionality after you purchased the car. In that case, you may be able to get CarPlay through a firmware update or an upgrade kit. In that case, you need to contact your local dealer to see if such a thing is possible and to inquire about the associated costs. This is a rare occurrence, so don’t be surprised if you look into it and find it isn’t an option.

The other way to add CarPlay is to find a replacement head unit with the necessary functionality. If your car has a standard single DIN or double DIN head unit, you should be able to purchase an aftermarket CarPlay head unit and either install it yourself or pay for professional installation. This process sometimes requires a specific dash kit to fit the replacement head unit.

Replacing the head unit isn’t possible in many newer vehicles with highly integrated infotainment systems. For example, if your vehicle’s climate controls are operated via a touchscreen in the dash, you’re likely to find that replacing the head unit isn’t a viable option. In that case, the best way to get CarPlay is to buy a vehicle that already has it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CarPlay subscription based?

No, if your car comes with it and you have a compatible iPhone, you won't have to pay any additional money to use CarPlay.

If I have an Android phone, can I use CarPlay?

No. Android Auto only works with Android-based phones, and CarPlay only works with iPhones. When manufacturers add CarPlay, they usually add Android Auto, so it might not even matter that Androids can't use CarPlay.

Is CarPlay better than Android Auto?

Overall, no. Does one have a better feature or two than the other? Maybe! The functionality is pretty similar, leaving the rest up to preference. We recommend comparing Android Auto and CarPlay to see which has more features you need.

Thank you very much. We are very happy that you enjoyed the app.

Moscow Travel Guide

Do not waste your time with this one. First of all it is grossly overpriced, the Tube map is in Russian, which is good if you are Russian ( though then what is the point in paying for something that is free and available at every tube station). App appears to be poorly coded, it is slower than molasses in Siberia. The "guide" comments are so simple minded and unoriginal as to be nearly worthless. You can get any of the 'insights' for free from virtually any tourist agency. I would give this app a zero but for the fact that it is a good idea.

Apple CarPlay on Dodge Challenger, how to connect

Dodge Challenger supports Apple CarPlay that lets you access your iPhone apps like iTunes, Google Maps, Waze and Spotify through the touch-screen of your vehicle. You can also make phone calls, send messages or use navigation with voice commands using Siri.

2018 dodge journey apple car play

Enable CarPlay and Siri on iPhone

You must have iPhone 5 or newer device with iOS 7.1 or newer version to use Apple CarPlay on Dodge Challenger. Before you begin, ensure CarPlay and Siri are enabled on your iPhone. Also, make sure that the “Press Home for Siri” option is enabled under “Siri & Search” in settings.

If you can’t see CarPlay or Siri & Search under your iPhone settings, then go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps , and make sure both CarPlay and Siri & Search are enabled.

Enable CarPlay in Challenger

CarPlay must be enabled in your Cherokee’s infotainment system settings if you want it to launch automatically when you connect USB. To enable CarPlay, select Apps , then Projection Manager . Check the box next to Smartphone Device Mirroring .

2018 dodge journey apple car play

Connect iPhone to Challenger’s USB port

  • Connect your Apple iPhone to your Dodge Challenger USB port using an Apple-approved Lightning-to-USB cable.
  • Touch Allow on your iPhone when prompted. This allows the use of CarPlay with your Challenger while phone is locked.
  • CarPlay will launch automatically on the infotainment system display.

2018 dodge journey apple car play

If CarPlay does not start automatically on your Challenger after you plug in the USB, then touch its icon on the launch bar on home screen of the infotainment display.

If you’re unsure which USB port supports CarPlay on your particular Challenger variant, then consult your vehicle’s owners manual – or you can try plugging in the cable, one by one, in all the USB ports in dashboard and center console.

CarPlay not working on Dodge Challenger

If Apple CarPlay does not start on your Challenger when you plug in the USB cable and there is no CarPlay icon in the list of apps in the infotainment system, it can be due to a number of reasons:

  • CarPlay is disabled in your iPhone, go to ‘Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps’ and enable both CarPlay and Siri.
  • The Lightning-to-USB cable you’re using is defective. Try a different cable, preferably original Apple cable.
  • The connected USB port on your Challenger does not support CarPlay. Try other USB ports.
  • A software glitch is responsible for the CarPlay problem. Reset the Challenger’s infotainment system to its factory settings.
  • You’ve an older model of Challenger that does not support Apple CarPlay. Only 2017 and later model year Dodge Challenger vehicles are compatible with CarPlay.

Using Siri on Dodge Challenger

Siri is Apple’s voice recognition feature that helps you to concentrate on the road while driving your Challenger as you can control the functions of the iPhone with voice commands.

The virtual assistant allows you to place phone calls, listen to and send text messages, play music on your iPhone, get directions and use other functions of your iPhone hands-free. You can even ask Siri for current weather conditions, stock prices or upcoming events on your calendar.

To access Siri, press and hold the talk button on the steering wheel of your Challenger until you hear Siri tone.

2018 dodge journey apple car play

You can also access Siri by holding down the home button located at the bottom left corner in the CarPlay app.

If the Listen for “Hey Siri” function is enabled in your iPhone device under Siri & Search settings, you can also just simply say: “Hey Siri”. After hearing the audible alert, you can begin asking Siri for assistance.

For best results when using Siri, speak clearly and reduce background noise by closing the windows and moonroof. Also, direct the air vents on dashboard so that they are not pointing towards the vehicle’s microphone.

Which Challenger models support CarPlay?

2017 and later model year Dodge Challenger vehicles are compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Using Google Maps on Dodge Challenger with CarPlay

If your iPhone has iOS 14+ operating system, you can freely use Google Maps in Apple CarPlay on your Challenger. Apple now allows the use of Google Maps in the home screen. Apple has allowed the competitor’s map service in its car application since iOS 12, but the homescreen that was newly introduced in iOS 13 in 2019 could not yet be equipped with maps. Here, users were still limited to Apple’s own map service. With iOS 14 that changes. Now CarPlay automatically selects the last service used for the view.

Using Waze navigation on Dodge Challenger with CarPlay

You can use Waze navigation app in CarPlay if you have iOS 12 or higher operating system installed on your iPhone. Download and install Waze app from App Store on your iPhone, then start CarPlay on your Challenger’s infotainment system display. Then touch Waze icon to launch the app.

Using Spotify on Challenger

You can use Spotify to stream music on your Challenger. Just install the Spotify app from App Store and its icon will appear in the infotainment display when CarPlay is active.

You can use voice commands to play music hands-free on Spotify with Siri. Just add “on Spotify” at the end so that Siri knows which service you’re referring to (e.g. “Hey, Siri, play my ‘Your Mix of the Week’ playlist on Spotify”).

Siri can play songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, and more. You can also “like” music, ask what’s playing, and control playback (e.g. volume, skip song, play / pause).

Do not disturb while driving

When driving, keep your eyes on the road. A quick look at the navigation device is of course allowed in order not to miss the next junction. The “Do not disturb while driving” function can be activated so that your iPhone does not distract you with unnecessary notifications while driving your Challenger. iOS 13 extends this option to CarPlay as well. On your iPhone go to Settings > Do Not Disturb, then scroll down and touch “Activate” under “Do not disturb while driving”.

Not all apps are compatible with CarPlay

If you think you can use all your iPhone apps in your Dodge Challenger with CarPlay, then you’re wrong. The selection of compatible applications is limited, and you have to live with restrictions, especially with messenger apps. iMessage and WhatsApp can be controlled almost exclusively via Siri. That means you cannot see your message history, but only have new messages read out to you or even dictate messages yourself.

The following apps can be used with CarPlay on your Challenger, among others: Music, Phone, News, Podcasts, Audio books, Audible, Google Maps, Sygic TomTomGO, Whatsapp, calendar, Settings, Telegram, Waze, Spotify, TuneIn, Tidal, Pandora, Youtube Music and Amazon Music.

Sort apps in CarPlay

You can sort CarPlay apps in your Challenger quickly and easily through your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > General > CarPlay , then select your vehicle under “MY CARS” . On the next screen you can rearrange app icons by touching and dragging them. You can also hide icons by touching the minus button on them.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

2018 dodge journey apple car play

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
