Tour Summary

This 3 Day safari will take you to Uganda’s largest parks known as Murchison Falls National Park , situated in Northwestern Uganda on an area of 3,840 sq km, gazetted in 1926 as a game reserve.

It is classified with Savannah grasslands, and the Victoria Nile that flows through separating it into two (the northern and southern bank). Murchison Falls is home to over 451 bird species such as the Great blue Turaco, Goliath heron, the Shoebill, and the dwarf kingfisher among others, 76 mammal species, a big number of Nile crocodiles and above all the magnificent and thunderous Murchison Falls squeezing their way through a gorge that is 8m wide. All said, you will have an opportunity to enjoy both our Uganda safari game drives and the boat cruises along the Nile River.

Day 1: Travel to Murchison Falls National Park

After an early breakfast, our driver guide will pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 am, he will also brief you about your 3 Days safari to Murchison falls and you will start your 6 hours journey to Murchison Falls National park. You will go through the Luwero, and later have a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino tracking; here you will find both black and white rhinos.

After tracking have another stop in Masindi where you will have lunch, after lunch proceed to the park, after making payments for park entry drive towards the top of the falls, here along the way you will see various animals such as warthogs, baboons among others.

Being at the top of the falls is an amazing experience as you will watch the magnificent falls squeezing through the rocks in an 8m gorge. Take as many photos as you can. Later drive to the lodge, relax the whole evening, have dinner and an overnight.

Day 2: Morning game drive and a boat cruise along the Nile

On this day wake up early and have breakfast at 6:30 am, after your driver and the ranger guide will pick you up from the lodge to start your Game drive at 7:00 am. During the drive you will be in position to see very many animals such as lions, buffaloes, giraffes, elephants, antelopes, water bucks and birds among others.

After the game drive at around 11:40 am, drive back to the lodge, relax/freshen up and have lunch as you prepare for the afternoon boat cruise. On the boat you will be able to see various Nile crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, elephants along the banks of the Nile as well as different beautiful birds some singing in the trees such as the bee eaters, the colored kingfishers, the shoe billed stork and many others. The boat ride will take you to the base/bottom of the Murchison Falls, when you reach here you will be able to see clearly the mighty waterfalls.

You could opt to go for hiking to the top where you will meet your driver guide who will drive you back to the lodge. Have dinner and an Overnight.

Murchison Falls National Park is the biggest national park in the whole of Uganda. It extends over an expanse of 2840 sq km stretching over 2 districts of Amuru plus Masindi. How to get to Murchison Falls This is a safari jewel in Uganda well known for its different game views as well as the stunning Murchison Falls from which the parks name was derived. The park is habitat to a diversity of Uganda safari wild animals such as the “big 5” that include leopards, buffaloes, elephants  plus lions. Previously this park also had rhinos however by 1983 they had out become extinct due to the out of control poaching plus guerrilla wars which rocked Uganda in the late 1970’s as well as the early 1980’s. Additional animals within the park are hippos, Oribis, giraffes, Hartebeest, crocodile, Uganda kob and antelopes. Primates like chimpanzees as well as monkeys are numerous within Rabongo Forest plus the Caniyo Pabidi forest. Bwindi National Park is home to a number of birds such as the uncommon shoebill, the yellow footed fly-catcher, white thighed hornbill, herons, ducks, fish eagles and kingfisher.

Murchison Falls National Park is cut across by the great River Nile running from the east to the west for 71 miles. The Nile divides Murchison falls park into the northern and southern areas. This separation played a big role in conserving the northern area from poachers. The river-crossing made it really challenging for poachers who were mainly coming from the south. Due to this the northern part is gifted with a lot more wild animals in comparison to the southern part which suffered severe poaching. Nonetheless, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has since increased its efforts to safeguard this park from hunters as well as poachers.

3 Day Murchison Falls safari  is the best short tour for seeing many savanna animals and wildlife in Uganda, with the best chances of spotting some of the much sought-after big cats such as the Lions and Leopard.

The largest park in Uganda,  Murchison Falls National Park  is the prime destination for wildlife and big game viewing safaris in Uganda. It is located along the Nile, covering 3,480 square kilometers of various habitats ranging from forest, grassland, riverine woodland, borassus palms, acacia savanna, water. The park protects a large concentration of wildlife including a remarkable 87 mammals, and over 451 bird species. The park gets its name from the spectacular Murchison Falls located on the Nile. These waterfalls, also called the most important object of the entire course of the river are the center piece of the park, where they provide a spectacular view of the Nile squeezing through a tiny chasm of about 7 meters between rocks exploding into the pool 42 meters below. In the background,before the depression, the river is calm with a mirror-like smoothness. But a few metres in its course, turbulence in the water begins and it becomes the dramatic Murchison Falls.

Murchison is only 5 to 7 hours from Uganda’s capital, Kampala. • Pick up time for the safari is set at 7 am and location is either around Kampala or Entebbe. The tour guide shall pick you up from your hotel and set off to travel to Murchison Falls. You will take the Kampala – Gulu road, a smooth tarmacked (paved) road and by around mid-day you will be in Masindi town. Stopover for lunch and thereafter continue the journey, and in less than an hour to reach the southern entrance of the Murchison Falls park. Check in with the park staff and continue into the park driving on the dirt through the dense Budongo Forest. You will be welcomed by hundreds of baboons lined along the road. However, endeavor to keep the windows closed as the baboons will be attracted to snatch items from the car. For bird lovers, be on the lookout for some species. Wood doves hoover in front of the car, and the Saddle-billed Stork is a common sight along the road. Enjoy panoramic views across the thick forest. Depending on the accommodation you selected, you shall get to the ferry to cross over the Nile and transfer to your accommodation where you shall spend the rest of the evening relaxing.

• You should be up by 6.00am, take a quick cup of coffee or tea with a snack to warm your tummy and set out for the  early morning game drive . The early start is a better time and offers more chances for the great sightings of the nocturnal animals and elusive predators such as Lions, Hyenas, Leopard and Jackal, as they are still out actively hunting in the morning hours and haven’t returned to their hideouts. Murchison Falls National Park is divided by River Nile into the south and northern region. The northern part is largely covered by savannah and woodland and supports a lot more volume and variety of animals compared to the southern region which is mainly covered by forest. Therefore, the game drives are done in the northern area of Murchison Falls. If your lodge is found in the southern section, you will thus get a ferry to cross to the northern section for your game drive. Explore the game trails towards the Lake Albert delta where big game such as the Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, and many Antelopes are seen. Murchison falls is the main stronghold in Africa for Rothschild Giraffes. Therefore, you’ll be blown away by these beautiful creatures as you enjoy the beautiful savannah landscape that is immersed with plenty of life and wonderful scenery. The game drive will last for approximately 3 hours, and you have the choice of having a packed breakfast on the game drive or return to the lodge for breakfast. Back at the lodge there is some time to relax. After lunch set out for a 2-hour  Launch Cruise (boat safari) on River Nile  which sets off at Paraa, going upstream to the bottom of the Murchison Falls. Boat ride offers an array of wildlife sightings - crocodile, hippos, and lizards are a common sight throughout the cruise. As you reach the falls, you notice a lot of huge crocodiles amongst the largest ever seen amassed together. The place is called “Croc Bar.” Big game such buffaloes, elephants and antelopes can also be sighted drinking and cooling off the heat by the river banks and with a little luck, you might even spot a leopard resting in a tree close by the water. It is easy to see the animals at a close and clear encounter for many animals come to drink, bathe, and as well to eat some grass. Herds of hippos can be witnessed playing in the waters, all of which offers a wonderful opportunity to take photographs of the various animals. Since the Nile is a bird magnet, it offers an opportunity for one to tune in and listen to the melodious twitters of various birds that find the river environment an haven of rest. This birdlife is vey impressive, and keeps you constantly entertained, with a profusion of colours and species. You will also be totally blown away by a spectacle of sheer power and beauty with which the water squeezes through the devil’s cauldron. Reaching the bottom of the Murchison Falls, you will leave the boat and set out for a 45-minute  hike rocks adjacent the Murchison falls  and thereby accessing great views of the falls at different spots along the trail. If your reserved lodge is in the northern section, you will get a ferry to cross to the southern for a hike or to go to the top of the falls. Once reached the top you will find the tour guide waiting to drive you back to the lodge for dinner and overnight. You will have the opportunity to watch the sunset over the River Nile at dusk.

Tour Details

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s oldest and largest conservation area, covering an area of 3,840 Km².  The park is home to over 451 bird species (including the highly sought after and rare shoebill stork) and 76 different mammal species, including giraffe (which cannot be viewed in Queen Elizabeth National Park). Other game sightings regularly include lion, elephant, hippo, leopard, buffalo, hyena, warthog and various antelope.

One of the highlights of this trip is the mighty River Nile, which bisects the park and is forced through an 8m² wide cleft in the rock at Murchison Falls, plunging into the Devil’s Cauldron below.

Day 1 Depart Kampala for Murchison Falls National Park & Top of the Falls hike

07.15 Please be at the Red Chilli reception by 7.15am at the latest. Depart at 7.30am in a customised pop-top safari minibus with driver/guide (max 8 passengers per vehicle). Take a brief break in Masindi, before proceeding into the park.

14.00 Arrive at the Top of the Falls, where you may take your packed lunch if you have not already enjoyed it en route! (Please bring your own packed lunch or order from Red Chilli when booking your trip.) Take a guided walk around the thunderous Murchison Falls, with an optional mini-hike to view the sister falls, Uhuru, which was created in 1962 when the river burst its banks.

16.30 Travel on to the Red Chilli Rest Camp on the south bank of the Nile at Paraa (approx arrival time 17.30). Accommodation consists of safari tents with twin beds, including bedding and shared bathroom facilities (but not towels). Upgrades to en suite bandas with solar hot water are available on request (please enquire for pricing/availability). Look out for our resident warthogs, hippo and other wildlife around the camp! Enjoy dinner and drinks around the camp fire when weather permits.

Day 2 Full day in Murchison Falls National Park

06.45 Cross over on the bridge to the north bank of the Nile, taking along a packed breakfast from Red Chilli. Enjoy a 4-hour game drive around the Buligi game tracks, which stretch between the Victoria and Albert Niles, and down to the Nile-Lake Albert Delta. Most of the park’s game and birdlife can be viewed from here, but please note – nothing is guaranteed!

11.00 Cross back to the south bank and enjoy lunch and a well deserved break at Red Chilli Rest Camp.

14.30 Depart for a 3-hour boat cruise along the Victoria Nile to the base of the Falls. Along the way you will be able to observe a wide variety of birds and wildlife, including numerous hippos and crocodiles – as well as breathtaking scenery. Cold drinks are for sale on board.

17.30 Your driver/guide will meet you off the boat and take you back to Red Chilli for another night in the camp.

Day 3 Final game drive & return to Kampala

8.30 Cross the Nile to enjoy a final game drive along the Wangkwar or Delta sector, for approximately 3 hours before leaving the park. A final chance to spot some more wildlife!

11.00 Leave the park and head back to Kampala. Stop for a bite to eat at Kabalega Diner (or bring along a packed meal from Red Chilli) before continuing with the homeward journey.

18.30 Arrive back in Kampala between 17.00 and 18.30, depending on traffic.

WHAT WE SUGGEST YOU BRING : A photocopy of your passport, including the visa page; torch; malaria prophylaxis; insect repellent;  sturdy walking shoes and long trousers for hiking; binoculars; camera equipment; plenty of drinking water/snacks; any other personal affects, light coloured clothing (NB There are tsetse flies in the park, which are attracted to blue or dark colours)

• Trip cost excludes all food/drinks/other personal items. If you would like to add on full board at the Rest Camp, the tour surcharge would be US$40 per person.
• Cost includes park entry fees, game drive ranger fees (when available), boat cruise, guided walk fees, transport/fuel, shared accommodation in furnished safari tents with bedding. Towels are not provided in the safari tents but can be rented for a small fee.
• Upgrades to banda accommodation can be made for an extra charge - please enquire for availability.
• Staff tips are never expected but always appreciated.
• A 50% deposit or payment in full is required in order to secure your reservation. Please see our payment terms and conditions for further information.
• We endeavour to book out all trips to a max of 8 pax. In the event that a trip has less than 6 people booked, we reserve the right to cancel, or reschedule the trip. In the event of cancellation, deposits will be refunded in full.
• Pick-ups en route may be considered if FULL PAYMENT is made in advance – please enquire before booking.
• The price includes a free night’s camping/dormitory bed at Red Chilli Kampala the night before departure (subject to availability, non transferable and non-refundable). Please reserve in advance if required.
• Discounts are available for East African residents and Ugandan Nationals, subject to a valid UWA recognised ID. Please inform us when booking if you are seeking to claim a discount.
• Baggage is limited to 1 medium backpack per person. Excess baggage can be stored at Red Chilli Kampala free of charge.
• If you are arriving at Red Chilli Kampala on the morning of departure please report to the reception by 7.15am. We cannot wait for latecomers and will not refund deposits should this occur.
• Children below the age of 10 are not permitted on scheduled trips but please enquire about our exclusive trips.
• Take all sensible precautions against malaria.
• Do not approach any wild animals you may see around the camp/park, & do not startle them with flash photography.
• Drink plenty of water at all times & protect yourself from the sun – Murchison is considerably hotter than Kampala.
• Take care of your valuables at all times. We cannot accept responsibility for any loss.
• We can supply packed lunches on request from Red Chilli Kampala for Day 1. However last orders are taken at 21.00 the night before the trip departs. If you are unable to meet this deadline, please email or call ahead with your order.
• Please leave yourself plenty of time between the scheduled return of the trip and any ongoing travel connections. We cannot accept responsibility for any missed connections due to late return

Day 1 : transfer to murchison falls national park and visit ziwa rhino sanctuary en route..

You will be picked up from your place of stay in Kampala after breakfast at around 7.00 a.m. to embark on a 311km (5-6 hours) drive northwest to Murchison Falls National Park.

We will drive through the former battle zone of the Luwero Triangle, passing through the impressive rural landscapes of Uganda with lush green cover, scattered human settlements, towns, and markets where you will see people going on with their daily lives, stopping at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary , the home of Uganda’s only wild rhinos.

Here you get the opportunity to track wild white rhinos on foot and you will get to appreciate what a 2-ton animal really looks like while your adrenaline is pumping.

Rhinos are part of the Big Five of land animals and exploring them on foot is indeed an unforgettable wild wildlife-watching encounter. After this 2-hours rhino tracking encounter, we will continue on the drive to Murchison, arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 2 : Do a Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Nile Launch Cruise to the Bottom of Murchison Falls.

After breakfast at around 6.30 am, we transfer to Murchison Falls National Park’s northern bank for a 3-4 hours game drive in search of the ‘Big Five’ (Buffaloes, Lions, Elephants, and possibly Leopards).

Other amazing animals of Uganda to look for include Rothschild’s giraffe, Uganda Kob, Patas monkeys, Olive baboons, Defassa waterbucks, Jackson’s hartebeest, Bohor reedbucks, Oribis, Warthogs, Spotted hyenas, Hippos, Bushbucks plus much more as the list of mammals reaches 76 species. Other activities in this game drive include bird watching and sightseeing across the open savannah, dotted with Borassus palms.

Murchison Falls is a wonderful birding destination and the star attractions among the 451-plus Uganda bird species recorded here are the pre-historic shoebills, Grey Crowned Cranes, Goliath Heron, Denham’s Bustard, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, Black-billed Barbet, Black-headed Gonolek, Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Piapiac, Silverbird, and others.

After the game drive, we will connect to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon we will transfer to Paraa Jetty to embark on the afternoon Nile launch cruise to the bottom of the falls departing at 2 p.m.

This stunning boat ride on the World’s longest river – The River Nile to the bottom of the Murchison Falls offers a great opportunity to see a variety of amazing wildlife from the peaceful sailing boat.

You will have a chance to see giant Nile crocodiles in one of the largest concentrations, Hippos in great herds, Shoebills, Cormorants, and Kingfishers, large flocks of African skimmers, groups of elephants showering on the river bank, Defassa waterbucks, and African buffaloes.

Retreat from the 2-hour activity and connect to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Murchison Falls is an impressive sight from the boat, but for sheer sensory overload, we take a short footpath that leads downhill to the waterfall’s head and a fenced viewpoint from where you truly appreciate the staggering power with which the 50 meters Nile explodes through the 7-meter wide gap in the rift valley escarpment and plunge 45 meters down, not to mention the deafening roar and voluminous spray it generates.

The Murchison Falls is one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls, worth adventuring in Uganda .

You will also have an option of Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest during which you will have a chance to watch our closest living relatives close up and in their magisterial natural surroundings. After this exciting adventure, we will drive back to Kampala City with the views of River Kafu en route.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala to Murchison Falls via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

This safari starts with our driver/guide picking you up from your residence/hotel in Kampala or Entebbe early in the morning. You will then go on a panoramic drive (approx. 8-9hrs) northwest through Luwero and Masindi town. Branch off for a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided Rhino walk and picnic lunch.

Day 2: Murchison Falls safari game drive

Begin your day with a cup of African coffee ready for a wildlife game drive, bird watching, and sightseeing across the open Savannah dotted with woodland and riverine vegetation along the Nile and Albert delta.

Here expect to meet elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, waterbuck, and countless populations of birds, return to the lodge for breakfast and lunch.

After lunch, a three-hour boat trip along the Nile gives you an assured chance to see the Murchison falls from the bottom angle. Wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and aquatic birds can be seen along the shores of the river.

Day 3: Murchison falls back to Kampala/Entebbe

Wake up at 6:00 am prepared to take a photograph of the African rising sun in the morning and enjoy an African breakfast. Return to Kampala and Entebbe Airport at leisure for your flight to your next destination or back home.

Day 1: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park –  Rhino Tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Accommodation: Nile safari Lodge/Paraa safari lodge (Luxury), Pakuba Safari Lodge (Mid-range) and Red Chilli rest camp/Heritage Lodge (Budget).

Day 2: Game drive –  Launch Cruise – Walking from bottom to the top of the falls

Day 3: Return to Kampala

Since this is the last day of the safari, you should wake up at your own time taking into consideration your program for the day. If you have a flight late in the evening or night, you might want to set off earlier. The driver could take you for more photos at the top of the falls before beginning the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.

Heritage Safari Lodge : This lodge is built in the northern sector of the park, a few miles away from Tangi gate. It is an accommodation facility which welcomes all guests by offering budget, mid-range and luxury cottages. They even have tents for backpackers at a very affordable fee. Some of the rooms are built to look like traditional Acholi huts. The Acholi are the dominant tribe in the area and many are employed by the hotels around the park. The luxury and standard cottages are self-contained but the tents have shared bathrooms and toilets. Heritage Safari Lodge also offers great views of the River Nile and frequent sights of animals like elephants or hippos from their balconies. Late in the afternoon, guests are entertained by Acholi traditional dance performers.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: arrival and transfer to murchison.

Our driver/guide will pick you up from your hotel/residence very early in the morning and you embark on your journey to Uganda’s largest game park. Drive through different districts dotted with farms, banana gardens, and tea, and sugarcane plantations. Transfer to the northwest through the famous Luwero Triangle and Masindi Town and branch off for a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided Rhino tracking experience and picnic lunch.

Proceed to Murchison Falls National Park with sightseeing en route to your Lodge for relaxing and a night stayover.

Day 2: Full day Murchison Falls Exploration.

After lunch prepare yourselves for the rewarding launch cruise up the river Nile taking you straight up to the centerpiece and main attraction of the park “the Murchison Falls” an awesome display of the power of nature.

As the boat sails gently up the river along the riverbank, you will be able to see crocodiles, an abundance of hippos, herds of elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lots of birds including the fish eagle, storks and so much more. On your journey downriver enjoy the Nile as you take another look at the beautiful scenery around you.

Prepare for a hike to the Top of the Falls (approx. 1 hour). It is a strenuous hike but worth it. See where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow gorge in the Rift Valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43m below.

Your driver/guide will be waiting for you to bring you back to the lodge.

Day 3: Depart Murchison Falls for Kampala.

Murchison falls National Park is Uganda's largest game park measuring 3840sqkm of land. The park is loacted North of Kampala and is most popular for its diversity of animal and bird species immersed in sprawling wooden savannahs mainly south of the park while the open savannah grasslands north of the park is famous for the borassus palm trees and acacia trees. Day 1: drive to murchison falls national park - hike to the top of the falls.

After your early morning breakfast, our company driver/guide will meet with you at  7:00 am and will brief you on your 3 days Murchison falls wildlife safari Uganda package, then start-off with the 6 hours’ drive to Uganda's biggest national park ( Murchison falls National Park ) .

We shall have a stopover in Luwero town to pick a couple of fruits, like oranges, pineapples, passion fruits and or jackfruits. Then proceed for a 2hrs Rhino tracking at the Ziwa Rhino sanctuary , lunch at the Kabalega Dinners.

After lunch, we proceed to the Murchison falls National Park  heading to the top of the mighty falls,walk and hike around. Check out and head to our lodge with an optional evening game drive or relaxation by the lodge or swimming pool.

Continue the drive as you savour the beautiful landscape while occasionally sighting warthogs and other wildlife species. The sightings at the top of the falls are breath taking with about 300 - 400 cubic meters per second of Nile water force through a tiny gorge of about 7 meters to plunge into a violent tempest in a whirlpool about 42 meters below. It is such a beautiful sight with incredible picture moments here.

After the hike drive to your lodge and check in for dinner and overnight. And for all accommodations on the Northern bank, we shall have an evening game drive.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive through the park and Boat Ride on the Victoria Nile

The Nile that crosses Murchison falls National Park bisects it into the South and North sections. The North section is more endowed with game compared to the south. For that matter the north is preferred for game drives. If your reserved lodge is found in the southern section, you will get to the ferry crossing to get on the Norther side for your game drive package.

Explore the major game trails especially around the area of Paraa for good game spotting including lots of elephants , lions , giraffes , antelopes , Jackals, hyenas, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, Jackson's Hartebeests and hopefully the elusive leopards among others .

At around 11:30 am you return to the lodge for your lunch and some relaxation for an indefinitely short time. Later we set out for the afternoon Boat Ride on the Victoria Nile which is the high spot of any Murchison Falls Safari for you to spot lots of wildlife species at a close and clear encounter.

You will have to spot lots of hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants , buffaloes , and many other animals that come to drink water, refresh and cool themselves off the scorching sun and some animals to eat the fresh grass along the river banks.

The Nile is also a birds' magnet. You will also be shown the crush point of Ernest Hemingway. The ride takes you close to the base of the Murchison Falls and here you are treated to yet another sight of these lovely falls. You could hike to the top of the falls before the return ride, then return back to the lodge for your dinner and overnight.
