In some cases, when visiting a few different cities, you may be better off with something different entirely: a multicity itinerary.

There are also plenty of additional considerations if you're booking an award flight using frequent flyer miles or flying internationally.

Here, we break down the basics of what you need to know about booking round-trip flights.

A round-trip flight is an itinerary from one destination to another, with a flight back to the original destination.

In most cases, this is what you probably book when going on vacation or visiting a family member for a holiday weekend.

Let's say I live in Charlotte and want to fly to Arizona for a spring break trip. I book an itinerary with an outbound flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and a return trip to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) aboard American Airlines.

The two flights, booked together on a single itinerary, constitute a round trip.

What is the difference between a round-trip flight and a one-way flight?

Let's say I want to fly from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO). I'm going to visit Walt Disney World for a few days. Then, I'm going to take a Brightline train to South Florida and spend a few days at the beach before flying back to New York.

Since these are airports heavily served by JetBlue, I'll use that carrier as an example. On JetBlue's website, I'll select "Multi-city" instead of searching "Roundtrip" or "One-way" flights.

I'll need to separately enter each leg of the trip. Let's do a Saturday departure from Newark to Orlando, and then a Thursday return from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Newark.

You'll end up booked on a single itinerary, with the outbound and return flights linked, but with the different city combinations.

Can I buy a round-trip flight with an open return?

No, not exactly. When you book a round-trip flight, you'll generally have to specify a return leg and date.

Do you think I will better off flying out of St. Petersburg? Can someone tell me what is the average price of (regular seat) Sapsan Train?

Please help. I only have until tomorrow to decide whether to go for the multi-way options or not.

Hi Gisele, it's kind of a six-of-one, half-a-dozen-of-the-other situation - but for what it's worth, I'd just pay the $200 extra and fly home from St Petersburg.

The cost of a Sapsan ticket varies according to the time of day and how far in advance you buy it (sales start 45 days in advance of the date of travel); a random date in September shows tickets around the 2275 RUB (about $69 USD) to 2844 RUB (about $86 USD) mark on the official rzd.ru site. The trouble with this is that it won't accept US credit cards, so you'd have to buy via a third party agency, which can add around 30% to the price, or wait until you get to Russia and buy it at the station (closer to travel date, therefore price more expensive).

Personally, I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of going back to Moscow - so even though it might cost a bit more, I'd just change the flight and leave from Piter.

If you keep your original itinerary, you could consider 3 moscow, 5 St Pete, 2 back in Moscow so as not not feel rushed about making connections, and catching more expensive Moscow hotels at weekend rates, maybe. Or do any other permutations. The point is try not to catch train and plane on the same day out. That would be a tough day.

Southwest Airlines is giving travelers a chance to earn a promotional Companion Pass® after flying one round-trip flight. This pass is essentially a buy one ticket, get one ticket free, allowing two companions to travel together. However, this promotion is only available until March 27, 2024.

How To Earn The Promotional Companion Pass

Getting the promotional pass is pretty simple. First, travelers must register for this promotion and provide their Southwest Rapid Rewards® account number. Travelers can register for free at Southwest.com/rapidrewards if they don't have an account.

Once registered, travelers must book either one round-trip flight or two one-way qualifying flights by 11:59 p.m. CST on March 27, 2024, for travel between March 25, 2024, through May 22, 2024. If travel is completed during that time and the user is registered, they will earn the promotional Companion Pass, which will be valid for use between August 05, 2024, and October 02, 2024.

Note that charter flights, flights booked for reward and group travel, flights used with the Companion Pass, and Southwest Vacations packages do not qualify for this promotion. The designated travel companion can be changed up to three times with the promotional Companion Pass.

What Does The Companion Pass Include?

Earning the Companion Pass lets travelers pick one lucky person to travel with them for nearly free on Southwest Airlines. They only need to pay for their flight ticket’s taxes and fees, which start at $5.60 per one-way flight. So, for less than $12, someone can travel along with the person who earned the Companion Pass.

Usually, the Companion Pass is earned after flying 100 qualifying flights or after earning 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points. Once it is earned, it is good for the remaining year in which it is earned, plus the following year. For example, if the Companion Pass is earned in May 2024, the Pass will be good for the rest of 2024 and in 2025.

The promotional Companion Pass doesn’t last as long but doesn’t require as much travel.

Southwest Airlines has a limited-time promotion that allows travelers to earn a promotional Companion Pass that is good for travel between August 05 and October 02, 2024.
