Mania – The ABBA Tribute have announced the act will be back on the road, with a 35+ stop tour starting in Minneapolis and stopping in Cincinnati on November 9 at Taft Theatre .

MANIA (formerly ABBA MANIA) formed in 1999 and the show has been selling out theatres and concert halls internationally ever since. This show has toured the world in its quest to bring the music of the Swedish ‘Supergroup’ to their millions of fans, old and new!

In 2007 it grossed over $1 million at the box office in Sydney, Australia. The show has ventured to France, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, USA, Australia and South Korea as well as touring the UK extensively.

The show has been successfully touring the USA annually since 2009 with over 400 performances, many of the venues book the show every year as it has become a ‘tradition’ for both the show and the audiences. The thirst for this sensational recreation of abba’s concert is getting stronger every year.

Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid, collectively known as ABBA, dominated the charts for nearly ten years and enjoyed nine UK number 1 hits. At their height they became Sweden’s highest export earners, amazingly, outselling Volvo cars. ‘ABBA Gold’ was continuously in the Album Charts throughout the nineties and is one of the biggest selling albums ever.

ABBA’s timeless songs were written to be enjoyed live and MANIA gives you exactly that. Two hours of uplifting, dance inducing and sometimes heart-breaking songs, fully live with fantastic staging, lighting and effects. In an exhilarating, two-hour recreation of one of ABBA’s most memorable concerts, MANIA brings to life the flamboyance of the ‘70s. This includes all of the uplifting, dance-inducing and sometimes heart-breaking songs from the iconic Swedish band, with fantastic costumes, staging, lighting and effects.  

MANIA recently toured the United States for the 10th time with an impressive 37-date national tour, selling over 50,000 tickets and visiting 18 states.

For lifelong ABBA fans, as well as new generations who never had the opportunity to see the band live, MANIA provides the perfect excuse to party, relive memories and simply feel entertained with the best music ever.

ABBA everywhere as Mania The ABBA Tribute comes to The Hanover Theatre

There's just no stopping the mania. ABBA mania, that is.

Tribute bands, recreations of ABBA concerts, and ABBA itself in "ABBA Voyage," a virtual concert residency featuring avatars depicting the Swedish group as they appeared in 1977, are all ongoing. 

Mania — The ABBA Tribute comes to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts Oct. 29 and calls itself "The Best ABBA Tribute Concert Ever!"

This tribute band dates back to 1999 when it was formed in the United Kingdom. It has played on London's West End and all over the world.

Alison Ward has been with Mania — The Abba Tribute since 2010, singing the part of Agnetha Fältskog, the ABBA co-lead vocalist with Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad.

To put it another way, Agnetha is the blonde singer and Frida is the brunette.

"I'm a brunette. I live the blonde life on stage and have a great time doing it," said Ward.

Mania — The ABBA Tribute puts on "a replica of one of their (ABBA's) concerts," Ward said.

Perhaps it is the best ABBA concert ever since the actual ABBA sued the band when it was previously called ABBA Mania, arguing that the name could be confused with the original act. 

The name was changed to Mania — The ABBA Tribute. "It doesn't affect anything or anyone," Ward said of the change.

The original ABBA burst on the scene at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, rocking and shocking the sometimes staid regular proceedings with the rollicking "Waterloo." Many hits would follow such as "Mamma Mia," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "S.O.S.," "Super Trouper," "Fernando," "Take A Chance On Me" and "Dancing Queen." 

Björn Ulvaeus (guitar, vocals) and Benny Andersson (keyboards, vocals) wrote most of the songs with their irresistible hooks and melodies.

The super troupers also made headlines with their relationships. Agnetha and Björn, and Frida and Benny were, respectively, married couples until their breakups.

By 1982 ABBA had given what for many years seemed like its final performance. The popularity of the group and its songs found decades of long echoes in tributes and musicals and movies such as "Mamma Mia!"

Then last year ABBA announced that "Voyage," an album of brand new songs, would be released on Nov. 5 , 2021. It became the group's highest-charting studio album ever in the United States. In May 2022, "ABBA Voyage" opened at a new 3,000-capacity venue in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park called the Abba Arena. The show, which is still running, features digital versions of ABBA appearing nightly alongside a 10-piece live band.

Meanwhile, last year at The Hanover Theatre  "ABBA the Concert" was performed by The Visitors (named after ABBA's last album), a group from Stockholm, Sweden, that has toured the show in the U.S. with great success over the past 10 years or so years.

Mania — The ABBA Tribute has toured the United States 10 times and been seen by more than 3 million people around the world. The show is fully live with costumes (including Napoleonic attire from "Waterloo," boots and "guys in heels"),  staging, lighting and effects.

"We do a lot of the favorites. ABBA had so many songs," Ward said.

Ward was speaking on the phone on a recent Friday during a tour stop in Minneapolis. 

"We do the show in a Swedish accent. We're trying to keep everything in the style and the movement as close as we can."

Ward is originally from Liverpool, England. The other members of Mania — The ABBA Tribute are Hana Keala Freeman (Frida), a graduate of the University of Nevada-Reno and a Los Angeles-based actress, singer and dancer; James Allen (Bjorn), raised in Sydney, Australia, and a performer in numerous leading theater productions, such as “Les Miserables,” “West Side Story” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”; and Jeff Pike (Benny), a native of Atlanta, Georgia, who has just recorded two new albums scheduled for release in 2022 and 2023.

 "I'm from a musical family. I've always had different music around the house," Ward said.

That included ABBA when she was growing up, although "I probably didn't know the words as good as I do now, having sung the songs thousands of times." 

She started her singing career at a young age, performing throughout the UK in various theaters such as the London Palladium and Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, and appearing in numerous music videos and TV shows for the BBC, Channel 4 and MTV.

Ward also graduated with a degree in mathematics from Leeds University. But this is what really added up for Ward — "Ever since university I've been blessed to be working full time as a singer," she said.

She started performing with Mania — The Abba Tribute in the UK. Then she got a job in Las Vegas with a different show, but joined Mania —The ABBA Tribute on its United States tours.

She's also performed in the show at different locations worldwide, including such faraway locations as islands off of New Zealand.

Ward has developed her own show, "All By Myself," which takes her around the world on cruise ships.

"All By Myself" is a mix including jazz, Sinatra, songs from divas past and present, and stories of Ward's life. Since ABBA is a big part of Ward's life, there are some songs from the Super Troupers in the show as well, she said.

"I love being able to travel the world," Ward said. COVID put a break on things, but "for the foreseeable future I'm back to doing what I love, which is singing."

For the next 10 weeks or so, she's singing and touring with Mania — The Abba Tribute.

It was cold in Minneapolis, she said.

But with a house of about 1,000 people expected that Friday night, things were expected to warm up.

"Friday night and the lights are low," Ward said, quoting from "Dancing Queen." 

The performers also interact with the audience to get them up and dancing. 

Such is ABBA mania that they don't need much encouragement.

"Most of the time they're up on their feet  on their own accord," Ward said. 

Could there be such a thing as too much ABBA, particularly now with ABBA itself doing "ABBA Voyage"?

"I went  and saw it myself.  It's a very clever show," Ward said of "ABBA Voyage."

"It just made even more people in the world get involved with the ABBA fan club. Just like when 'Mamma Mia' came out,  we gained even more fans."

Balboa Theatre Celebrates its 100th Anniversary

Per the California Department of Public Health (CDPH),  guests who attend this event will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19  (at least two weeks after final dose)  OR a negative test is required. Tests must be taken:

• 48 hours before an event for a PCR test
• 24 hours before an event for a rapid antigen test

Unvaccinated guests are required to wear a mask while inside the theatre.

For your convenience, Lux Concierge is offering rapid testing onsite at the Balboa Theatre  for $40 per test.  Testing is available 1 hour before the event. Please plan to arrive early to the venue to accommodate the testing.

ABBA MANIA  has been delighting audiences of all ages since it’s formation in 1999. In 2002 it played 18 weeks in the Strand Theatre London re-creating the Abba phenomenon for fans from all over the world.

Featuring a special concert presentation, which celebrates the music and style of Abba in a respectful and enjoyable way, ABBA MANIA revives special memories of when ‘Abba’ ruled the airwaves. Their songs are timeless and will last forever.

ABBA tribute back at Adler this fall

What bills itself as the world’s number-one touring ABBA tribute returns to the Adler Theatre on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

“Mania: The ABBA Tribute” formed in 1999 and the show has been selling out theatres and concert halls internationally ever since, according to a Tuesday Adler release. Mania played at the Adler last October, and November 2022.

This year, the iconic Swedish pop group is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their breakthrough hit single “Waterloo.” Mania: The ABBA Tribute has successfully toured every continent in the world and has played over 3,000 live concerts in over 35 countries.

Recent highlights included a second run in London’s West End where the show performed for a month in the iconic Shaftesbury Theatre, London in May 2021. The show also enjoyed an 80-date sellout USA National tour in 2022-2023, and Mania continues in its quest to bring the music of the Swedish supergroup to millions of fans, old and new!

Featuring an extraordinary cast of talented musicians and performers, Mania: The ABBA Tribute delivers an authentic and unforgettable tribute to the legendary Swedish band that has captured the hearts of fans for generations, the Adler release says. “With stunning costumes, energetic choreography, and impeccable musicianship, Mania: The ABBA Tribute recreates the magic of ABBA’s music in all its glory.”

Formed in 1999, this production has sold out theaters and concert halls across the globe, with over 3,000 live concerts in over 30 countries, bringing the music of the beloved Swedish supergroup to 3 million people.

In an exhilarating, two-hour recreation of one of ABBA’s most memorable concerts, MANIA brings to life the flamboyance of the ‘70s. This includes all of the uplifting, dance-inducing and sometimes heart-breaking songs from the iconic Swedish band, with fantastic costumes, staging, lighting and effects.  

MANIA recently toured the United States for the 10th time with an impressive 37-date national tour, selling over 50,000 tickets and visiting 18 states.

Get Directions

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and follow signs indicating Downtown San Francisco. Stay to the left and take the Marina exit; you’ll see the sign overhead. While you might be tempted to take a right at the first stop light (Lyon Street) and pull directly into the Palace of Fine Arts, pass the Lyon Street entrance and proceed straight on Marina Boulevard. Then:

• Right on Baker Street
• Left on Jefferson Street
• Left on Broderick Street
• Left on Marina Boulevard, then immediately move into the right lane
• Turn right on Yacht Road and follow signs for Palace of Fine Arts parking (lot is next to the St. Francis Yacht Club).
• Or continue on Marina onto Mason Street. The alternate parking lot will be on your left (see map). Please note that there is a walkway from this lot to the back of the main Theatre lot.

NOTE: Avoid bearing left on Marina Boulevard; that stretch of Marina Boulevard turns into an onramp for Highway 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you inadvertently end up on the approach to the Bridge, don’t worry; you’ll have a chance to exit to the right just before the toll plaza. You can then make your way back to the Palace of Fine Arts through the Presidio or retry the directions from above.

Cross the Bay Bridge. Follow the signs to the 9th Street exit. Stay in the right-hand lane. Go one block and turn right onto 9th Street. Stay in the left-hand lane. Immediately after Market Street, veer left onto Hayes Street. Then:

• Right on Van Ness Avenue (look for signs to the Golden Gate Bridge)
• Left on Lombard Street; once on Lombard, get into the right-hand lane
• Right on Divisadero Street

NOTE: Avoid bearing left on Marina Boulevard; that stretch of Marina Boulevard turns into an onramp for Highway 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you inadvertently end up on the approach to the Bridge, don’t worry; you’ll have a chance to exit to the right just before the toll plaza. You can then make your way back to the Palace of Fine Arts through the Presidio, or use the directions “From the North Bay,” above.

From Highway 101

Take Highway 101 North to the Market Street/Van Ness exit. Take Van Ness to Lombard (look for signs to the Golden Gate Bridge). Turn left onto Lombard. Once on Lombard, get into the right-hand lane. Then:

• Turn right on Yacht Road and follow signs for Palace of Fine Arts parking (lot is next to the St. Francis Yacht Club). If you pass the lot, you’ll see signs on the right for additional parking at Crissy Field.

From Interstate 280

Follow 19th Avenue through Golden Gate Park; 19th Avenue becomes Park Presidio Boulevard on the other side of the Park. Follow signs for the Highway 101 Detour. Then:

• Right on Geary Boulevard
• Left on Van Ness Avenue, move into left lanes
• Left on Lombard Street, get into the right-hand lane

The Palace of Fine Arts Theatre has convenient access to public transportation. We are accessible by San Francisco Muni buses #30, #43, #28, and #29. Muni bus lines #22, #41, and #45 also stop in the vicinity. From Fisherman’s Wharf take the #30 Stockton bus. For more information, call Muni at (415) 673-6864 or check the SFMTA trip planner.

If you’re taking BART, get off at the Montgomery Street station, walk one half-block up Market Street to Third Street, and catch the #30 Stockton bus on the corner.

Virtually all downtown-bound Golden Gate Transit buses stop nearby the Theatre. Ask your driver for directions or call Golden Gate Transit Information at 511 (toll-free) or 415-455-2000 (outside the Bay Area).
