abu dhabi eco tourism

Pura the first eco resort in Abu Dhabi is now open.

Head on over to Jubail Island to immerse yourself in nature and be pampered in style.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Abu Dhabi does it again, the Capitals first eco retreat,  Pura  is now open on Jubail Island. This adults-only hideaway offers a laid-back escape where the focus of each stay is its nature-filled surrounds.

abu dhabi eco tourism

The retreat takes its name from the popular Costa Rican phrase “Pura Vida” – which translates from Spanish to “pure life”. The eco-focused hideaway also follows the Costa Rican lifestyle, which is all about slowing down and enjoying life’s little pleasures. It’s exactly this essence that Emirati owner Ibrahim Al Mannaee is trying to capture at Pura.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Reachable via a sandy, single-track road that winds for around three kilometers through  Jubail Island’s  mangroves, Pura Eco Retreat is housed in a gleaming white villa with a bright turquoise roof. As you are shuttled along the road towards the retreat, it’s impossible not to notice the distinct change in the air.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Each of the exterior walls of Pura’s main building has a huge purple wildlife mural, painted by artist Fatima Al Hammadi. Inside the glass entranceway is a sleek minimalist lobby where guests check-in. For Al Mannaee, the retreat is a place to highlight Abu Dhabi’s natural archipelago landscape. “Abu Dhabi is made up of over 200 islands, but how many of us have actually experienced those private islands,” he says.

abu dhabi eco tourism

While island-living is very much the highlight here, guests at Pura are not expected to fend for themselves in a nature-filled wilderness. Instead, butlers are on hand to show people to their rooms.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Golf-buggies transport visitors to their dome-shaped suites where a well-stocked welcome pack awaits. A king-size bed offers scenic views of the surrounding mangroves and all rooms come with coffee-making facilities.

abu dhabi eco tourism

In keeping with the Pura Vida lifestyle, guests are encouraged to digitally detox, which is why there’s no Wi-Fi in the domes. Instead, there are lots of complimentary activities to keep guests entertained.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Activities include fat biking, kayaking, yoga, stargazing, birdwatching and more. Further along the shoreline, there’s a private beach and access to the water – exclusively for those staying overnight.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Al Mannaee is hopeful that this close connection with nature, coupled with the home comforts that travelers want during a staycation, will entice people to visit. “We would like people to experience a different side to Abu Dhabi, Pura offers the chance to experience a rustic camping style experience, but in full comfort and close to the city”, Al Mannaee said.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Breakfast is taken on the terrace behind the main villa. A private oval-shaped pool backed by the mangroves sits beside a terrace where food is served under billowy white shades.

abu dhabi eco tourism

On the platform behind this spot, beanbags and easy chairs have been set up to encourage people to sit, pause and drink in the view. This is also where yoga classes take place, giving guests the chance to practice their asana right on the mangroves’ edge.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Beyond this terrace is the main dining area. Dinner bookings are also available for the general public, but reservations are essential. The seating areas and tables have been crafted from wooden pallets with brightly colored, locally made table runners and cushions covers.

abu dhabi eco tourism

Overhead, lampshades created out of fishing baskets reminiscent of those used by local fishermen swing in the breeze and there are a few open tepee-style tables set out on the sand.

abu dhabi eco tourism

The team plans to collaborate closely with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi to ensure activities fit with the natural environment. They have also been involved in planting more mangrove trees in the surrounding waters.

Within touching distance of Jubail Island’s mangrove forests, Pura gives visitors a front-row seat to nature’s beauty. Staff can provide binoculars for wildlife spotting, and there’s certainly no shortage of opportunities.

abu dhabi eco tourism

More than 90 different types of birds frequent the forest including flamingo, herons, dunlin and whimbrel. The threatened greater spotted eagle is also a regular visitor to the shoreline. And the birds are not the only creatures that call this place home. Inside the mangrove canopy are frogs, seagrass, spiders and countless species of fish.

abu dhabi eco tourism

With exceptional dining, rustic style living available just a short drive from the city, what are you waiting for. Leave the kids and the laptops at home and come unwind with nature.

Eco tourism is the winning card of any environmentally protected area; it brings in the cash needed for wildlife conservation projects and creates awareness of why these areas need protection among visitors. Defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people and creates environmental awareness and education, eco-tourism has massive scope in Abu Dhabi, which has six main protected areas with just one eco-resort exists - Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts. Sir Bani Yas is home to about three million different trees, including ghaf, palm trees, cedar and miswak, the toothbrush tree, as well as six mangrove forests. The emirate's first wildlife conservation projects started here. Some 35 years ago, when the Arabian Oryx was extinct in the wild, the late Shaikh Zayed bin Nahyan found a couple of them in a zoo in California and brought them to the island. Today, over 10,000 Oryx have been released back into the wild, due to this breeding programme. The wildlife park on the island also grew to several indigenous species, as well as other Asian and African animals, including cheetahs and one of Shaikh Zayed's favourites, giraffes. "Tourism has a great potential in increasing public appreciation of the environment, as well as spreading awareness of environmental problems by bringing people into closer contact with nature and the environment," said Christian Gerart, general manager of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts. The size of Abu Dhabi city, the 87sqkm island was developed into an eco-tourism resort by the Tourism Development and Investment Company and opened to the public in 2008. Sir Bani Yas is thought to be created nearly 10,000 years ago, when it split from Abu Dhabi's mainland. The island was first mentioned in European literature around 1590, when Venetian jeweller Gasparo Balbi listed 'Sirbeniast' as an island around which pearls were often found. Indeed, along with its neighbour Delma Island, Sir Bani Yas was on the pearl route of Arabian pearl diving and trading expeditions. After pearl diving was drowned in history by the invention of sweet water pearls, Sir Bani Yas was forgotten by the world. It was Shaikh Zayed who brought it back to life through several conservation programmes. Today, Anantara manages three resorts on the island, but there are strict rules visitors must follow. "Ecotourism has gained high importance to today's hospitality business and should be something every hotel considers and implements. The implementation of simple measures, such as water and energy conservation or waste management does not only have immediate impact on the hotel operation, but more importantly supports the provision of a healthy environment to future generations," concluded Gerart. The most beautiful eco-tourism spots in the UAE

  • May 29, 2023
  • By Caroline D’Almeida

With COP28 on the horizon and the UAE taking massive strides towards strengthening its position as a global eco-tourism hub, here are some eco destinations to visit for your next getaway

Mangrove national park.

In the capital, for instance, you can’t miss out on the biodiversity hotspot that includes mangrove forests, salt marshes, mudflats and algal communities, and more. While a stroll in this park provides breath-taking sights, there are also plenty of activities for the entire family from stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking to hopping on a private boat tour. For more information, visit ead.gov.ae

Jubail Mangrove Park

A mangrove sanctuary at its core, the park is also the first self-contained educational, nature and leisure destination of its kind in the emirate. Explore a haven for avian and marine species native to Abu Dhabi, and kayaking is definitely the best way to do that! For more information, visit jubailisland.ae

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

The UAE’s work towards the preservation of wetlands has long enabled the breeding and reintroduction of certain endangered species. Gather the family to take in sights of the majestic greater flamingo, now flourishing in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve , while the Arabian oryx, once extinct in the wild, has been successfully reintroduced in the Um Al Zumoul Protected Area! For more information, visit ead.gov.ae

Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve

Or you could head towards Marawah, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re lucky, you can spot endangered species like the green turtle and the dugong . A major tourism draw lies just within, i.e., Al Batinah Island’s sea cows, Socotra cormorants and mangroves, to name a few. For more information, visit en.unesco.org/ biosphere/arab-states/marawah

Wasit Nature Reserve

Located in the heart of Sharjah, the award-winning reserve is an architectural wonder, transformed from a wasteland to a diverse ecosystem for indigenous flora and fauna. For more information, visit epaashj.ae

Wadi Al Helou

Also known as the Sweet Valley, it is one of the most pristine natural reserves in the country, and home to an important archaeological site and a restored Islamic watchtower. Nestled between the Hajar mountains, the hiking trails here are simply surreal. For more information, visit epaashj.ae

Now here is a story still being told. The ongoing excavation programme means there is something new every day , and the range of attractions offered seamlessly blend history, leisure and nature into one thrilling experience. For more information, visit discovermleiha.ae

Peeling away the glamorous layers of Dubai reveals an array of sustainably driven spots. Flamingo spotting at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve has become popular in recent years. These expansive reserves serve as a breeding ground each year for crustaceans, mammals and fish, but the pink-feathered stars continue to steal the show. For more information, visit dm.gov.ae/discover-dubai/ras-al-khor

Of course, successful eco-tourism relies on proper infrastructure and leisure amenities. Scenic landscapes need both easy access and availability of accommodation nearby, as well as nature-based recreational activities to enjoy it all.

Luckily, the UAE has no dearth of these, right from eco-tours, guided hiking trails, wildlife observation trips, bird watching, stargazing, wetland exploration and more! In addition to the fun factor, these activities also provide renewed respect for nature and a better perspective on travel that doesn’t hurt the planet.

Family Travel in the Middle East

The UAE’s best eco-tourism sites to experience in 2023

“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”

UAE Eco tourism

We welcome guest writer Shea Wittig, a sustainable professional, eco-writer and global citizen with a relentless wanderlust spirit. She has lived in Australia, England and the Middle East and her love for travelling to new and exotic locations has fueled her dedication to share ways to live and travel more sustainably.

She is most happy when exploring the wonders of the world with her young family, supporting businesses with an ethical ethos and eating chocolate (Fair Trade, of course!). Y ou can connect with Shea at her personal blog Conversations with My Sister and on Instagram .

Ecotourism, biodiversity and nature conservation might not be your immediate thought when exploring the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to the glitz and glamour of the cosmopolitan cities portrayed on the covers of glossy campaigns.

However, with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launching The UAE National Ecotourism Project , across all seven Emirates, this is all about to change.

The desert is unmistakably an extreme environment yet, is still home to a diverse range of flora and fauna stretching across land, air and underwater. There are 43 protected areas in the UAE spanning 14% of the country and a selection of these are open to the public. Many are free to visit and all of them provide visitors with unique experiences and, perhaps more importantly, the opportunity to surround yourself with elements of the natural world.

Bird watching at Al Wathba Wetlands

So, what can you expect to find when you dig a bit deeper into the spirit of the UAE?

People of all ages are invited to participate in the releasing of endangered Hawksbill turtles , wander around the prime habitat of the flamingos , kayak or ride in an eco-donut around the wetlands , snorkel in the ocean , explore a UNESCO oasis and head out to the sand dunes. These are all outdoor activities which are ideal to organise during the cooler months.

Heading indoors and visiting The Falcon Hospital , The Green Planet and Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo are best saved for the summer months when high temperatures make it uncomfortable to be outside.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Outdoor experiences to enjoy in the cooler months

Releasing hawksbill turtles.

Abu Dhabi & Dubai

Seeing sea turtles released in the UAE

The UAE is home to the Hawksbill Turtle , a marine animal which is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Special attention is focused on areas where turtles are known to return with extra precautions, awareness and education a high priority to ensure the best possible safety during nesting season.

One such protected area, which is open to the public, is the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary , a 2,002h area listed as a RAMSAR Wetlands of International Importance. Included within the area is the Ghantoot Marine Reserve.  Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi, President of the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) and his team monitor and protect nesting turtles and their incubating eggs, while providing the opportunity for the people of all ages to interact free of charge and have hands-on experience releasing the turtle hatchlings.

The passion Major Ali Saqr Sultan Al Suwaidi has for preserving the natural environment and educating youth of its value and importance is evident through the short presentation he gives on arrival to the sanctuary. Visitors are then invited to assist with weighing, measuring and recording the vitals of the hatchlings before being escorted to the beach, just on sunset, to assist in their safe release at the water’s edge.

Turtle Release 03

Turtle season in the UAE is expected between the months of May to September and detailed information on successful turtle nesting and the opportunity to participate with the hatchling release can be found on the EMEG social media pages on Facebook and Instagram . Contacting by private message on these platforms is most reliable.

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project provides another opportunity to see marine turtles up close with a viewing area of the rehabilitated turtles located within Madinat Jumeirah . The group have successfully released 1300 turtles which have been in their care, as of May 2017. You can learn more at their Facebook page  and read our review of what to expect at Madinat Jumeirah .

FLAMINGO WATCHING

Flamingo watching at Abu Dhabi's Al Wathba Reserve

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a perfect example of the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) commitment to provide assessable access to conservation areas so as many people as possible are able to enjoy the natural wonders.

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is another RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance.  It is home to more than 250 species of birds, insects and small reptiles, although perhaps the biggest drawcard is the 4,000 migratory flamingos which gather annually in the shallow waters.

The largest numbers flock to the wetland from the Autumn to the Spring and a viewing area has been constructed on the fringe of the waterway providing the perfect shelter to sit, with a picnic and set of binoculars, to watch the graceful birds in their natural habitat.

Flamingo spotting from the hides at Al Wathba Wetlands

Visits to the five square kilometre area, which is Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, begins with a short and informative presentation which provides the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the abundant wetland ecosystem.

After participating in the information session guests are left to meander along either the 1.5km or 3km circuit at their own pace, with a reserve field guide to use along the way. Small buggies are available on site which is ideal for those who struggle to walk for long stretches of time, however, the designated paths around the area allow easy access.

Al Wathba Wetlands buggies for those less able to walk

Visiting hours are limited to Thursdays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm with 2pm being the last entry time. Visiting the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is free of charge and the restricted times are due to the ongoing balance of protecting the natural ecosystem and providing the opportunity for visitors to benefit from the tranquil atmosphere the wetlands create.

More information can be found on the EAD website .

Entry to Al Wathba Wetlands

You might be surprised to learn just how much time people spend on the water considering the UAE is initially recognised as a nation surrounded by endless deserts and towering sand dunes.

Seasoned travellers understand the best way to experience a country is to behave like locals and, let me assure you, in a country blanketed by powerful heat during the summer, the locals gather around the water at every opportunity. Water sports are a favourite pastime and for those who enjoy combining recreation activities with nature experiences, a visit to the Eastern Mangroves wetland reserve is a definite must.

Eastern Mangroves

There are organised tours you can join where experienced guides will educate and answer questions along the way – the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency has provided a list of respected and well-established operators here . Kayaking is another popular mode of transport however, if you are looking for something a little bit a different, hiring your own Eco Donut to explore the Eastern Mangrove Nature Park, is a fun option.

The Eco Donuts are operated 100% off-grid, powered by the solar panels positioned on the roof and are easily manoeuvred by the most novice of seamen – including children! They are available for hire in an area where motorised boats aren’t permitted, making the adventure incredibly safe for all ages. Onboard you will find designated space to store snacks and beverages for an onboard picnic or, you can park at one of the jetties along the way where you can sit, or explore, a little more on foot.

Eco donut boats are a fun way to see the Eastern Mangroves National Park in Abu Dhabi

The Eco Donuts comfortably seat 6 people and are available for hire for 30 minutes to 2 hours. More information can be found on their website .  (Also keep your eye out for online specials and vouchers which make the adventure even more affordable.)

Indoor experiences to enjoy in the warmer months, the falcon hospital.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Tourism isn’t the driving force behind the Falcon Hospital as their primary focus is diagnosing and treating injured falcons within their state-of-the-art intensive care clinical examination rooms and operating units.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) has enjoyed many awards since its establishment in 2007 including, most recently, the 2018 Middle East Responsible Tourism Award and the 2017 World’s Responsible Tourism Award for the second consecutive year – and it is easy to see why.

The hospital is opened for organised tours which begins with a visit back through history focusing on the important role and heritage of Falconry in the Middle East. The local guide, in our case, had a friendly and interactive approach and seemed happy to share his vast knowledge as led by questions from the intimate sized crowd.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital - close inspection of one of their patients

The 2-hour tour begins in the more formal rooms and moves directly into the main examination room where you are invited to watch a simple procedure of a ‘pedicure’ or ‘feather repair’ on one of the admitted falcons. Photos are encouraged and there is even an opportunity for an obligatory hold of one of the majestic animals. The tour includes both indoor and outdoor holding areas as well as the secluded moulting rooms. At the time of our visit, there were 200 falcons hospitalised on the grounds with 1800 recorded releases to date.

Due to the success of the Falcon Hospital, the facilities have also been extended to treat critically injured cats and dogs and also provide accommodation for them in a five-star pet hotel. There are also adoption and foster care options available on site.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital history and displays as part of their daily 2-hour tours

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is open to the public from Sunday to Thursday with a 10:00am or 2:00pm tour start time and bookings need to be made in advance. The Saturday tour is only available at 10:00am from October 1 st to May 31st. More information can be found on the website .

THE GREEN PLANET

The Green Planet Dubai

The Green Planet provides the opportunity to connect with elements of nature, including animal encounters, within a tropical rainforest setting. The facility is built around a magnificent tree, which is the largest indoor, man-made and life-sustaining tree in the world and houses over 3,000 plants and animals.

There are three distinct sections which begin the story starting with the forest floor, where you are met by animals such as the Archer Fish. Move on up into the mid-story layer where you might be lucky enough to hold a Python, then continue to spiral up to the top of the canopy which is directly below the spectacular bio-dome.

Along the way you might see the iconic Sloth just ‘hanging around’ and there are plenty of parrots and other fascinating birds, including my personal favourite the Toucan, to entertain and delight visitors of all ages.

The Green Planet Dubai - outside view of the building

The care and knowledge shared by the award-winning and highly educated staff is second to none and it is hard to imagine any of the animals within the new-age zoo-like enclosure to be anything other than happy and content with their surrounds.

The building itself holds a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certificate due to its energy-conserving results and the consistent temperature range of 24-27 degrees Celsius, makes it a perfectly comfortable haven for visitors. Even the waterfall uses recycled water and the sound of running water adds to the effectiveness created by this ecosystem immersion.

DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

In continuing with the thoughts of David Attenborough where he insists “no one will protect what they don’t care about” suggests the idea that aquariums provide an opportunity for the general public to experience, connect and better understand, the importance of our oceans.

You can’t help but be impressed the instant you walk through the 48 metre long Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tunnel on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall.   No matter how often you see it, be enthralled by the spectacular 10-million litre aquarium tank which, in true UAE style, is one of the largest suspended aquariums in the world.

This truly spectacular setting proudly accommodates around 140 diverse species of aquatic animals, is home to the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks in the world, as well as many other species of sharks and rays.

Underwater World 05

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo take the initiative to introduce educational presentations throughout the centre with the intention to provide insight into the habits and behaviours of all the marine animals who call the ocean home. The aquarium offers visitors plenty of opportunities for interaction including the cage snorkelling experience or a shark dive.

For the slightly less brave of visitors, a ride in the glass-bottom boat, where you can assist in feeding the giant trevally, is something our family highly recommends.

Keep an eye on notices and announcements throughout your visit as there are many other presentations and feeding opportunities during the day which are suitable for a full range of age groups.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is open from 10:00am till 12:00pm Midnight with the last admission at 11.30pm – but please, do yourself a favour and allow longer than 30 minutes for your visit.

Abu Dhabi expands eco-tourism offerings to the public

EcoBalance

ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi has significantly expanded its eco-tourism offerings with the announcement that new marine protected sites across the emirate have now been made accessible to the public.

The newly unveiled areas will give residents and visitors a host of new options for exploring the emirate’s coastline and waterways, with the initiative also supporting the emirate’s maritime industry.

The announcement was made at the Monaco Yacht Show by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in partnership with the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), Abu Dhabi Maritime, and Abu Dhabi Ship Building.

The annual luxury trade show specialising in the maritime industry was attended by hundreds of yachting enthusiasts and professionals, including captains and crews, as well as yacht management companies, yacht agents, and owners.

A new marine reserves map of the capital and its waters, which outlines the new areas open to the public, is the latest addition to the emirate’s growing portfolio of tourism offerings. Known for its pristine beaches and islands, the UAE capital used the Monaco event to demonstrate its capabilities as a superyacht destination by showcasing its offerings and plans for the marine industry.

“Abu Dhabi’s marine sites are a significant part of our tourism sector,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, Executive Director of Tourism and Marketing at DCT Abu Dhabi. “Our strategy involves expanding our tourism offerings in a sustainable manner that caters to the growing demand for more activities across the destination. The newly announced marine protected sites will not only support the growth and success of yacht management companies in Abu Dhabi but will also provide their customers with a new and breath-taking way to explore the capital.”

Currently, the EAD manages six marine reserves, including the Marawah Biosphere, the region’s largest and first UNESCO-designated marine reserve.

“Despite harsh conditions, we host abundant marine life, which has the highest tolerance threshold in the world,” said Ahmed Al Hashmi, Acting Executive Director – Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at the EAD. “We host the largest Indian Ocean humpback dolphin population and the densest dugong population, and the second-largest population for dugongs in the world. That is why we are pleased to partner with DCT Abu Dhabi on the selection of marine protected areas that will help boost eco-tourism in Abu Dhabi.”

One of DCT Abu Dhabi’s main remits is to support the development of tourism industry partners. The new marine offerings connect marine and yacht management companies with the emirate’s wider tourism strategy to ensure the continued growth of their businesses.

Abu Dhabi has additional projects in the pipeline for the marine sector and will soon be launching Yas Bay on Yas Island, the emirate’s premier entertainment district. The new bay will feature new yacht berths, surrounded by several world-class hotels and entertainment activities, including the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The UAE has a rich natural environment offering a unique mix of diverse topography. The UAE is largely an arid land with vast sand deserts but is also characterised by sand dunes, oases, mountains, valleys, beaches, mangroves and salt plains. Every characteristic provides home to varied flora and fauna. This diversity attracts visitors to the UAE.

The UAE has more than 5,036.24 square kilometres of protected areas. This is equivalent to 6.02 per cent of the total area of the country. Some of these natural reserves are:

  • Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve and Al Yasat Marine Protected Area in the emirate of Abu Dhabi
  • Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in the emirate of Dubai
  • Wadi Al Helou, Meliha and Wasit nature reserve in the emirate of Sharjah.

There are many ways to explore the local flora and fauna. The options are extensive; from going on desert safaris to spot the Arabian Oryx to hiking up the mountains to catch a glimpse of birds and even camping in the desert to spot the nocturnal beings.

Ecotours can be arranged through dedicated environmental groups, such as Emirates Nature -WWF   and Emirates Environmental Group along with private tour operators and hotels.

A rich marine life and breathtaking underwater seascapes also attract snorkelers and scuba divers. Diving enthusiasts will particularly love Martini Rock off the coast of Fujairah.

Soak up the island way of life with the added luxury of a clean conscience at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort  in Abu Dhabi, the first hotel in the Middle East recognised and awarded by The Oceanic Standard for its revolutionary plastic-free and sustainable initiatives. Our mission is to blend luxury and sustainability seamlessly, and we’re immensely proud to have been recognised with this prestigious Ocean Champion badge.

The first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates

The resort has been the first hotel in the United Arab Emirates to set up an on-site water filtration system, reducing energy usage and transport. The team believes that hotels and resorts must join in the fight to preserve our planet for future generations and recognise that going green doesn’t necessarily mean cutting out the luxuries. Becoming as sustainable as possible will not only benefit the earth, but also our collective conscience.

Recognition from The Oceanic Standard

The Oceanic Standard is an international NGO that works to verify and spotlight eco-friendly hotels the world over. Hotels that make a significant effort to reduce their environmental impact are awarded for their efforts, to encourage a positive shift in the industry. Many elements of each hotel’s practices are assessed, both on the surface and behind-the-scenes, and these include single-use plastic consumption, food waste management, sustainable food procurement and the use of non-toxic products. Here at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island, we have taken important actions to promote environmental health and we’re delighted to be celebrated with an Ocean Champion badge.

Steps towards sustainability

During your stay, you can enjoy personal care products that are non-toxic or packaged in bulk containers or glass containers instead of single-use plastic. The resort is partnered with Trust Your Water, a Dubai-based water management company. We’ve taken steps to improve our single-plastic usage, from refillable shower amenities to swapping plastic straws for eco-friendly wheat straw alternatives. We ensure takeaway containers are made with fibre-based materials and cloth laundry bags. Other eco initiatives launched at the resort include our extensive in-house recycling scheme, greywater recycling, environmentally friendly thermostats in guest rooms and marine degradable packaging for toiletries.

Supporting local sea-turtles and humpback dolphins

A recent study conducted by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) found that over 700 humpback dolphins live close to the coast of Abu Dhabi, making it the largest known population in the world. You can also enjoy an eco-tour through the nearby Saadiyat mangroves to view these beautiful creatures in the wild, as the humpbacks are often seen hunting in the wetland forests that border the sea. Sea turtles have long been a protected species in the Gulf, and you can find seven different species in the surrounding undisturbed beach at the resort, including the endangered Hawksbill. Speak to the concierge at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort  and they will direct you to the best dolphin-spotting teams in Abu Dhabi, as well as when to visit hatching sea turtles.

The United Nations Environment Programme has named Environment Agency Abu Dhabi's marine ecosystem preservation and rehabilitation programmes in its top 10 global initiatives.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the UN Biodiversity Conference meetings, which took place from December 13 to 17 in Montreal, according to an EAD press release.

The programmes to preserve and rehabilitate coastal and marine ecosystems programmes were selected after evaluations conducted in accordance with Unep’s standards and requirements.

The selection was made from among more than 150 candidates from different countries and approved by 70 government agencies.

EAD was chosen for its efforts in rehabilitating the biodiversity habitats of Abu Dhabi’s coasts and waters for endangered marine animal species .

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD, said: “We have worked in several directions to sustain our marine environments and have succeeded in restoring our fish stocks, strengthened our plans to plant and rehabilitate mangroves, and launched the region’s largest coral reef rehabilitation project.

"All of this further emphasises the emirate’s important role at a local and global level in the conservation of species and their ecosystems.

"Efforts and resources are being directed to serve the goals of sustainable development and to preserve natural resources and ensure their sustainability for future generations.”

Saving corals and marine life

The coastal and marine areas of Abu Dhabi on the southern border of the Arabian Gulf , are considered a hot spot for biodiversity, housing various habitats that support a wide range of marine species and large fish.

EAD said it has worked to improve the condition of deteriorating fish stocks depleted by as much as 85 per cent, according to its studies and surveys.

The agency said its initiative helped protect fish stocks, with data showing that Abu Dhabi is on track to achieve its goal of sustainable fisheries by 2030.

An improvement has also been seen in the sustainable fishing index for three consecutive years, rising from 8.9 per cent in 2018 to 62.3 per cent by the end of 2021.

The agency also manages the Sheikh Zayed Protected Area Network, which comprises six marine reserves representing 14 per cent of the emirate’s marine environment. It has contributed to preserving biodiversity in Abu Dhabi.

These efforts have generated positive results for habitats and species, helping to stabilise important organisms and increase the number of birds, such as flamingos, it said.

It also launched the region’s largest coral reef rehabilitation project in June 2021, with the aim of cultivating more than one million colonies of coral reefs to increase their area and mitigate the pressures on coral reefs as a result of climate change and rising temperatures on the sea floor.

Protecting mangroves

EAD said it is focused on protecting mangroves through targeted programmes for planting and rehabilitating mangrove areas and using modern technologies in agriculture, such as drones.

These initiatives were recognised by the World Economic Forum as one of the most innovative in the field of blue carbon sequestration.

Over the past 10 years, 15 million mangrove trees were planted, contributing to more than a 35 per cent increase in the area of Abu Dhabi’s mangrove trees, which today exceeds 176 square kilometres, including natural and cultivated trees.

Studies by the agency revealed the ability of mangroves in Abu Dhabi to store carbon at a rate of 0.5 tonnes per hectare a year, which is equivalent to 8,750 tonnes for the entire emirate, and to the energy consumption of 1,000 homes per year.

Its initiatives are also helpting to preserve the emirate’s seagrass meadows, contributing to the stability of dugong numbers in their natural habitat.

Abu Dhabi is home to the second-largest group of dugongs in the world, with numbers exceeding 3,000 ― the highest density per square metre in the Arabian Gulf region.

Studies also showed an increase in the number of turtles and their population stability in the emirate in recent years, with numbers estimated at about 5,000 hawksbill turtles, green turtles and loggerhead turtles.

EAD said it also ensured the protection of three types of dolphins and one type of porpoise. The emirate’s waters host a population of more than 700 dolphins, most of which live in marine protected areas ― including the largest group of Indian Ocean humpback dolphins in the world.

"Our marine habitats thrive despite the challenges they face due to high temperatures and increased salinity in the emirate’s waters ― which is unique in a world where the effects of climate change are increasing," said Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, secretary general of EAD.

"Our natural habitats face pressure due to the rapid development in the region, as well as coastal development activities and projects related to housing, tourism and infrastructure.

"This has impacted critical coastal and marine habitats. We have taken proactive measures to balance the requirements of economic and social development, sustainable exploitation of resources, and the development of rehabilitation initiatives and ecosystem restoration within the framework of the emirate's plans and strategies.”

Abu Dhabi: The Environment Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) has been recognised by UN Environment Programme for migratory species conservation efforts.

The EAD was recently honoured with two Champion Plus awards in a ceremony at the opening day of the Fourteenth Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

EAD received the Champion Plus Awards for its commitment and efforts in supporting the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa & Eurasia, as well as the Conservation of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout their range for the period 2024-2027.

Champion Plus Award

The Champion Plus Awards are bestowed on entities who have supported the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) initiatives under the Migratory Species Champion Programme. The agency was recognised for supporting the programme including implementation of actions under two MoUs of the CMS Office — Abu Dhabi since its inception in 2009 — the convention’s only office outside Bonn.

The CMS Abu — Dhabi Office implements conservation activities for dugongs and African-Eurasian raptors, under two respective MoUs. The agreements were signed in October 2007 and October 2008 respectively and have been the umbrella under which several significant local and international initiatives have been launched. The UAE is signatory to both the MoUs and is signatory to the Convention on Migratory Species.

Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: “On this honourable occasion I would like to express my gratitude to the vision set by the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed, the inspirational President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi, for their unconditional guidance and support that has culminated in us being here today once again winning the two Champion Plus Awards.

Migratory species conservation

“These awards are another significant affirmation of Abu Dhabi’s leading position in the conservation of migratory species. The UAE has announced that 2024 will be an extension of the Year of Sustainability, reminding us that the conservation of the environment in all its forms is vital and necessary and something we should all collectively work towards. Being recognised with these awards, will further inspire and propel forward our efforts towards international cooperation for conservation of migratory species and we will continue to work closely with all our local, regional and international partners to this end.

“Ever since the launch of the CMS Office in Abu Dhabi, over 15 years ago, which the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi has had the honour of leading, we have witnessed several key achievements. For example, under the Raptors MoU, there are currently 64 signatories across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Similarly, there are 27 nations that have signed the Dugong MoU who are all supporting conservation strategies across their countries, helping our work echo beyond the borders of the UAE.”

Dugongs and turtles

Abu Dhabi hosts significant populations of dugongs and sea turtles, especially the critically endangered hawksbill turtle, and EAD has developed a long-term research, monitoring, and management programme for the conservation of these species and their habitats. Abu Dhabi hosts one of the world’s largest dugong populations, which, despite the threats it has faced, has remained stable due to effective conservation measures taken by the agency.

Second after Australia

With an estimated 3,000 dugongs in the Abu Dhabi population, it is the second largest after Australia. Under the Dugongs MoU EAD has worked with the CMS Abu Dhabi Office in developing the award winning the Dugong-Seagrass Research Toolkit and the 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough initiative.

Over two decades, EAD has also undertaken assessment, monitoring and movement studies on migratory species. Long-term trend data and information on migration routes and stopover sites are critical for the conservation of important migratory bird species, both locally and along their migratory routes.

Tracking studies

The agency’s long-term tracking studies on migratory birds and on some raptors such as Sooty Falcon, Spotted Eagle and Steppe Eagle is helping in improving understanding of the species migration patterns, the challenges they face, and actions needed to further protect them.

The CMS Abu Dhabi Office for the last 15 years has been implementing actions under the Raptors MoU to further conserve migratory species and their habitats and EAD has worked closely with the CMS Abu Dhabi Office in developing the Sooty Falcon Conservation Action Plan, the Saker Global Action Plan and the Vulture MSAP.

EAD has also been involved in providing the Technical Advisory Group of the Raptors MoU as its member and providing technical advice during the meeting.
