A guide to Zafra, Spain. From a big mistake to a pleasant surprise

Zafra plaza

Where is Zafra Spain?

Things to do in Zafra

We started by parking the car near the Parador de Zafra a 15th-century palace converted to a hotel that is quite impressive and a nice place to start your visit. Travelling with a young child our first stop is always a children’s park so that he can stretch his legs and have some fun before starting our visit and there are a nice large park and a couple of square’s right next to where we parked so that was perfect. After that and to our surprise we found a lot to see even if the schedule of most touristic attractions like museums and churches were not ideal. Some of the most impressive were:

  • Plaza Grande a nice busy square full of coffee shops and small bars and a great place to have a feel of the city.
  • Small streets of downtown
  • Arco de Jerez
  • Arco del Cubo
  • El Castillo del Castellar. An impressive rock formation just outside the city.
  • Colegiata de La Candelaria, although we couldn’t get inside it’s still the most dominating landmark in the city and you can see the tower from nearly every corner of the city.

Zafra hotel

There are of course some museums but unfortunately, the schedules didn’t work for us so we can’t comment on them but regardless I think the best of Zafra is how peaceful and safe it is for a family with a young child. There are many streets with very few traffic and it’s quite safe to walk around with a child making it a perfect place to relax and explore the streets.

Restaurants in Zafra

We had lunch in a restaurant called Arco and the food was great. The place was surprisingly modern and the service was 5 stars. We don’t usually write about restaurants but this one is worth a recommendation. There is only one catch they don’t speak English so communication might be an issue but we found that to be the case in many Spanish cities.

Accommodation in Zafra

We stayed in the Hotel Balneario El Raposo, a Spa type of Hotel with indoor swimming pool famous for its thermal water’s. The Hotel is relatively close to Zafra and it would have probably been a great stay if not for the several issues we had with our booking ranging from a room without a children’s bed to misunderstanding about whether the breakfast was included. Still, I think the Hotel is a good choice with good infrastructure and great location, just be sure to double-check your booking.

Discovering the ancient town of Zafra

Information

Zafra is a small town, brimming with history in the province of Badajoz. Its historic monuments and landmarks make up the beautiful historic centre. The city has a meagre population of 17,000 and has quietly remained off the tourism radar. However, its thriving commercial industry and strategic location between Seville and Mérida have given the city a surprising pulse.

The Romans originally referred to Zafra as Segeda or Restituta Iulia Imperial and it constituted a strategic bastion along Vía de la Plata (the ‘Silver Route’). When the town fell under Islamic rule, it was renamed Safra and continued to act as a key stronghold due to its location along the borders of the Caliphates of Seville and Badajoz.

The town’s trajectory was forever changed when the Suárez Figueroa family (the Dukes of Feria) where awarded the town, following the victorious Reconquista in the 13 th century. The family was the town’s most important patron and the initiatives they rolled out not only converted Zafra into a very prosperous town but also fitted it with stunning civil buildings which today make up the historic centre. In fact, the Old Town has been designated a National Heritage Site.

Palacio de los Duques de Feria

The top attraction in Zafra is the Alcázar Palacio de los Duques de Feria. The imposing, 14 th -century fortress-palace seamlessly merges sturdiness and luxury. It includes eight towers, four of which measure 24 m and make up the stunning façade. It also has a lavish, Renaissance-style interior patio made entirely of white marble. The patio was added in the 17 th century along with two new wings, galleries and a passageway connecting the palace to Iglesia de Santa María.

Parroquia Zafra

Parroquia de la Candelaria en Zafra

The palace has served many purposes over the course of history, including a prison, a hospital and a school. Its doors are always open so visitors can explore for themselves the architectural splendour the building boasts, including the iconic Sala Dorada with its coffered ceiling from to the 16 th and 17 th centuries.

Parroquia de la Candelaria

Located right at the heart of the historic centre rises the majestic, 16 th -century Parroquia de la Candelaria (also referred to as Colegiata de la Candelaria). This striking, Gothic-style church harbours priceless works of art such as the stunning altarpiece, featuring works by Zurbarán; the monumental organ; and the elaborate murals adorning the chapels of Virgen de la Valvanera and Virgen del Carmen. The town’s wealthy traders were major patrons of the arts and funded much of the art found in the church. The church achieved further prestige (and more works of art) when it as declared a collegiate church in the 17 th century thanks to the campaign launched by the Dukes of Feria.

Museo de Santa Clara de Zafra

The Dukes of Feria were the town’s most important architects, commissioning the construction of all types of buildings which can be admired today. These include Alcázar Palacio, Convento de Santa Clara and Monasterio de Santa María de la Valle. In fact, this monastery was built on order of the first Duke of Feria in the 15 th century and is still a working convent for cloistered nuns. There is also a museum on site with a fascinating collection of more than 1,000 pieces of religious art. Even though it is a working convent, some sections of the monastery are open to the public such as the gilded chapel with its stunning altarpiece; the funeral chapels and striking collection of reliquaries.

El Acebuche, the best restaurant in town

After a morning of sightseeing, there is better way to replenish energies than with a delicious meal, which should naturally include the locally produced jamón ibérico   – the best in the country. One of Zafra’s top restaurants, El Acebuche, is located near Plaza de España and offers two different menus composed of succulent traditional dishes. Start off a selection of tapas (a good time to order some jamón ibérico ) and follow up with a deliciously prepared main. The kitchen’s signature dishes include melt-in-your-mouth rabo de toro (oxtail) and yummy, homemade desserts. Don’t forget to pair your meal with one of the region’s gorgeous wines.

Things to Do in Zafra

61km (38 miles) S of Mérida, 172km (107 miles) N of Seville

One of the most interesting stopovers in lower Extremadura, the white-walled town of Zafra is filled with old Moorish streets and squares. The 1457 castle of the dukes of Feria, the most important in the province, boasts both a sumptuous 16th-century Herreran patio and the Sala Dorada with its richly paneled ceiling. The place is now a government-run parador . You'll want to spend time on the central square, the arcaded 18th-century Plaza Mayor , and on its satellite, the 16th-century Plaza Vieja (Old Square) . In addition to these two important sights in Zafra, Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is a church with nine panels by Zurbarán, displayed on the retablo in a chapel designed by Churriguera. The church, constructed in the Gothic-Renaissance style, has a red-brick belfry. Admission is free. It's open Monday to Friday 10:30am to 1pm and 7 to 8:30pm, and Sunday 11am to 12:30pm.

Castle of Zafra – The Hidden Gem of Spain (History & Travel Tips)

Worm's eye view of Castle Zafra.

The Castle of Zafra (also known as Castillo de Zafra) is something straight out of a George R. R. Martin high-fantasy book. With its tower keep architecture and regal stature, Zafra is one of the most iconic castles in Spain . Zafra’s location was highly strategic and important: it was situated on the boundary between the Muslim and Christian territories. It was deliberately made inconvenient to reach to enhance its defenses. Let’s take a look at how this castle fares n the contemporary world today:

Early History

Moorish origins.

Zafra Castle has been home to many zeitgeists throughout history, but its earliest remains can be traced back to the Moors. Although archaeologists have dug up remains that date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, along with Romans, Celtic, and Visigoth relics, the Moorish Zafra is what was at this site immediately prior to the castle we see today. It was conquered circa 1129 by the Christians.

Zafra Castle’s unique rocky perch and its fascinating geography.

The Spanish Nobility

The Castle of Zafra that we see today was built by the de Lara family in order to strengthen their hold on the territory. Don Gonzelos, the third de Lara, stirred up troubles in the territories outside his fiefdom by urging the other Castillian lords to overthrow King Fernando of Castile.

In retaliation, Fernando laid a siege on Zafra that lasted for a few weeks, as the troops couldn’t storm its excellent defenses. In the end, a negotiated peace was reached, the fallout included disinheriting Don Gonzalo’s male heirs and an arranged marriage between his daughter Dona Mafalda and Prince Alfonso .

A closer look at Zafra’s stone masonry.

After the 15th Century

The 15th-century Spanish civil wars saw the Castle of Zafra in the thick of things again, as it stood strong through multiple sieges. Henry II of Castile endowed the castle to his French mercenary ally, suffered through the civil rebellion, and was dethroned.  Zafra was inherited by the Castiles again by marriage before Henri IV of Castile gave it to the first duke of Alburquerque. It kept passing hands until it landed in the hands of the Spanish Catholic Monarchs (as opposed to the Spanish Moorish territory the castle also bordered).

A closer view of some part of Castle Zafra.

Zafra’s strategic location became moot after the conquest of the Iberian peninsula. After that, it began to fall into ruin.
