Best in-browser ad blockers

Best ad-blocking apps, best ad-blocking mobile apps, other privacy-focused extensions and apps.

The best ad blockers are crucial to survive on the modern internet. Not matter where you go, you're at risk of being harassed by pop-ups, tracker cookies, malvertising and countless other digital nasties that seem hell-bent on ruining your online experience. Even if all your browsing is above board, you're still at risk.

Thankfully there's no shortage of apps and browser extensions that can block ads and keep you safer when you're online. Combined with the best antivirus software and the best VPNs , a good ad-blocker gives you a perfect arsenal of tools to offer as much protection as possible. Even the FBI recommends using an ad-blocker for protection.

The only thing you need to figure out is which ad-blocker is right for you. There are so many to choose from, and whether you are willing to live with the downsides. Most free sites rely on advertising revenue to survive, including Tom's Guide. But if you're happy with the trade-off, we've got a thorough list of the best ad blockers and privacy tools — with options for every browser and platform.

The best ad blockers you can get today

1. adblock plus (chrome, edge, firefox, opera, safari, android, ios).

best ad blockers: adblock plus

AdBlock Plus (ABP) is among the most popular ad blockers, with extensions available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge and Opera. ABP features a quick setup, loading preset filter lists that allow users to quickly block most ads, as well as the option to filter malware and social media buttons.

Savvy users can chose additional block lists as well as set custom filters or whitelist their favorite sites to keep their ad revenue in the black. AdBlock Plus allows what it calls "non-intrusive advertising" through filters; that may irk some users, though this feature can be disabled in settings.

On Android, the AdBlock Browser provides a Firefox-based browser that blocks incoming advertising, while on iOS, the AdBlock Plus app integrates with the content blocker system to seamlessly block advertising on Safari with minimal setup.

Download AdBlock Plus: Firefox , Chrome , Safari , Opera , Edge

2. AdBlock (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

best ad blockers: AdBlock

AdBlock (no relation to AdBlock Plus) is the other best ad-blocking browser extension of note, available for users of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. AdBlock uses a series of filter lists to automatically block ad content coming from known ad servers and providers. Users can stick with the default block lists, subscribe to additional ones, or even create their own, as well as whitelist their favorite websites.

As one of the most downloaded Chrome and Safari extensions, AdBlock has the trust of many users worldwide.

Download AdBlock: Chrome , Firefox , Safari , Edge

3. uBlock Origin (Chrome, Firefox)

best ad blockers: Ublock Origin

Ublock Origin is a browser-based ad blocker that focuses on simple, efficient blocking with a low resource overhead. The extension comes loaded with a number of filter lists for known advertising and malware sources, with extra filter lists available and the option to read and create your own custom filters from hosts files.

Download Ublock Origin: Chrome , Firefox

4. Poper Blocker (Chrome)

best ad blockers: Poper Blocker

Rather than be an all-in one blocking solution, Poper Blocker (aka Pop Up Blocker For Chrome), is designed to complement other adblockers.

In this case, Poper Blocker focuses on blocking pop-ups, pop-unders, overlays, timed and scroll pop-ups, and other varieties that might slip past other ad-blocking extensions. Small notifications tell you when pop-ups are blocked. You also can view your blocking stats, but otherwise, you can generally just keep Poper Blocker running in the background with minimal impact alongside other adblocker extensions.

Download Poper Blocker: Chrome

5. Stands Fair AdBlocker (Chrome)

best ad blockers: Stands Fair AdBlocker

For a fast and light ad-blocking plugin, Chrome users can turn to Stands Fair AdBlocker. The extension does precisely what it promises, blocking ads and pop-ups from cluttering up your browser view while also preventing any tracking from going on.

Stand's Fair AdBlocker gives you control over the type of ads you can block, specifying everything from autoplay video ads, YouTube ads, expanding ads and more. It can even block Facebook ads if you want.

The "Fair" part of AdBlocker comes into play by giving you the ability to allow certain types of ads or even whitelist ad-supported websites you don't want to shortchange of badly needed revenue. This is one ad blocker that doesn't take a scorched earth approach to its stated purpose.

Download Stands Fair AdBlocker: Chrome

6. Ghostery (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Edge)

best ad blockers: ghostery

Like the other extensions on our list of the best ad blockers, Ghostery can remove ads from webpages, so you can focus on content and browse more efficiently. But the real value in Ghostery lies in its privacy protection features. You can use Ghostery to view trackers, which lets you see who's trying to collect data on you. With Ghostery, you can also stop that tracking from taking place. If you really want to safeguard your privacy, you can turn to Ghostery's Enhanced Anti Tracking to anonymize your data.

Ghostery's a free download that offers basic web protection. More advanced protection starts at $4.99 a month and the $11.99 monthly tier comes with a built-in VPN. There are also versions of Ghostery that work with Android and iOS devices.

Download Ghostery: Chrome , Firefox , Opera , Safari , Edge

7. Adblocker for YouTube (Chrome, Firefox)

Adblocker for YouTube is one of the best ad blockers

YouTube has gotten more aggressive with ads, so the makers of ad-blocking extensions have followed suit. Adblocker for YouTube is a Chrome extension that promises to automatically block YouTube ads, whether we're talking about the pre-roll ad appearing before your video or any text and banner ads that appear on the video itself.

If you prefer Firefox to Chrome, there's also an AdBlocker for YouTube extension that works on that browser. Same name, different developer apparently, but the functionality of stripping out video and display ads remains. This version works on Android devices too.

1. AdGuard (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: adguard ad blocker

Uses looking for a more robust experience can try out the subscription-based AdGuard, which provides desktop and mobile options to reduce the ads you see when surfing online.

AdGuard on Windows and Mac covers popular browsers, with highly configurable options for ads, content, and tracker blocking, as well as a parental controls module for restricting adult content. AdGuard for Android is a no-root ad-blocker that blocks advertising on apps and games, though you’ll have to install it from AdGuard’s site instead of through Google Play. AdGuard for iOS works with Safari to effectively filter ads on the default browser.

Download AdGuard: Windows , Mac , Android , iOS

2. AdLock ($33 per year)

best ad blockers: adlock

AdLock avoids the browser-based route, instead opting to run as a separate program to be able to block not only browser-based ads, but also advertising in other programs like Skype or games.

The app runs in the background, using filters to block ads, popups, and autoplaying videos, speeding up loading times and applying Safe Browsing features to automatically block sites that are known to be unsafe.

For obvious reasons, the mobile version is unavailable on the Google Play Store, so you'll need to sideload the app if you want to get AdLock into your Android device. iOS users can download AdLock directly from Apple's App Store.

Download AdLock: Windows , Chrome ,  Android , Mac , iOS

3. Wipr (macOS, iOS; $1.99)

best ad blockers: Wipr

If you’re a Safari fan, Wipr may be the best ad blocker for both your Mac and iPhone. The app is available for both iOS and macOS — costing $1.99 from either Apple App Store — and it promises to work with Safari as well as apps that use Safari for displaying web pages.

You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

With Wipr, pages should load faster in Safari, which will be particularly welcome if you’re surfing from an iPhone, where ads and trackers can bog down your browser’s speed.

Download Wipr: macOS , iOS

1. 1Blocker (iOS)

best ad blockers: 1Blocker X ad blockers

1Blocker was one of the first really good ad blockers on iOS when Apple opened up that functionality on iPhones and iPads; the apps has since been optimized for Safari.

The app is designed to make browsing faster and more secure by blocking ads, popups, trackers and other online cruft. Rather than blocking content of a downloaded page, 1Blocker works with Safari's content blocker API to tell the browser what to block in advance, saving time and resources.

1Blocker features more than 115,000 blocker rules, custom regional adblocking settings, and easy-to-use custom rules settings. The app is a free download, with premium features available as in-app purchases.

Download 1Blocker: iOS

2. Firefox Focus (Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: firefox focus

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing.

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

Our look at the best Android browsers has more on the various flavors of Firefox.

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear Plus running on an iPhone is one of the best ad blockers for mobile

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps.

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

Download AdClear: Android , iOS

1. Decentraleyes (Chrome, Firefox)

Best ad blockers: decentraleyes

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

Download Decentraleyes: Chrome , Firefox

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: opera best ad blocker

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions.

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. On iOS, the mobile version of Opera is listed in Apple's App Store as Opera Touch. (Incidentally, we've got a guide on how you can use Opera to block ads on the iPhone .)

Download Opera: Mac or Windows , Android , iOS

3. Privacy Badger (Chrome, Firefox, Opera)

best ad blockers: privacy badger ad blocker

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger browser extension was born from the EFF's concerns about the business models of some privacy tools and ad blockers.

Privacy Badger functions similarly to extensions like AdBlock Plus (on which it was based), observing the various tracking tools that advertisers and other third parties might use to track your online activities and selectively blocking them from executing. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account.

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

Download Privacy Badger: Chrome , Firefox , Opera

4. Tor Browser (Desktop, Android)

best ad blockers: tor project browser

The Tor network helps anonymize your internet activity by bouncing the data you send and receive through a distributed anonymous network of routers to foil a common online surveillance technique called traffic analysis, which can reveal the sites you visit or who you're communicating with.

The Tor Browser is an all-in-one package that includes everything you need to surf the net through the Tor network in an easy-to-install portable package. The package includes a modified version of Firefox with privacy aids such as NoScript baked in, and an automatic setup aid that makes it easy to connect to and create new Tor circuits.

On the desktop, you can grab a version of Tor Browser for Windows, macOS or Linux. There's also a version of Tor Browser for Android, which replaces the previous OrBot + OrFox combination recommended for browsing Tor on Android.

Download Tor Browser: Desktop , Android

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

best ad blockers: onion browser ad blocker

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS.

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

How to choose the best ad blocker for you

Many of the best ad blockers are available for free, either as extensions or as standalone apps, though a few, like AdLock, charge a fee. Determine if the free services provide enough ad-blocking to meet your needs or whether a paid app delivers more for your money. You should also figure out if a browser extension will take care of your ad-blocking needs or whether you should consider switching browsers to one with more built-in privacy features.

You can narrow down your choice in ad blockers by deciding specifically what you're looking to accomplish with such an app or extension. Do you just want to stop annoying pop-up ads from appearing or do you want the full range of services, including privacy features and an end to ad-tracking? Grab the ad blocker that ticks off all the boxes on your wishlist.

Some ad blockers, such as AdBlock Plus include filters and the ability to let in non-obtrusive advertising. Others, like AdBlocker Ultimate, take a more aggressive approach. Find out which one best suits your needs and comfort level.

As we noted at the outset, there's also an ethical component to ad blockers. Do you feel comfortable keeping ad revenue out of the hands of sites you enjoy and use for free? As good as the best ad blockers are, that's still a trade-off you need to consider when deciding whether to install one as a browser extension or as a standalone app.

The Best Safari Ad Blockers for Your Mac in 2023

In today’s digital age, our web browsers have become the gateway to the online world. Safari, Apple’s renowned web browser, offers users a sleek and user-friendly interface for exploring the internet. However, the constant bombardment of ads can often disrupt our browsing experience. That’s where the best Safari ad blocker  comes to the rescue, offering a seamless, distraction-free web experience. In this blog, we’ll delve into the world of Safari ad blockers  and help you find the best one for your needs.

Quick Navigation:

Part 1: What is Ad Blocker?

Part 2: benefits of using a safari ad blocker, part 3: choosing the best safari ad blocker, part 4: what is the best ad blocker for safari on mac, part 5: additional layer of protection for your safari browser.

An ad blocker is a software application or browser extension that is designed to prevent advertisements (ads) from displaying on web pages or within apps. These tools work by intercepting and blocking the requests that websites make to load ads, preventing the ads from being displayed to the user. Ad blockers are commonly used by individuals who want to enhance their online browsing experience by eliminating intrusive or irrelevant ads. Here are some key aspects of ad blockers:

Blocking Ad Types: Ad blockers can block various types of ads, including banner ads, pop-up ads, video ads, and overlay ads. They can also block tracking scripts and cookies that collect user data for ad targeting.

Improved Page Loading Times: By preventing ads from loading, ad blockers can significantly improve the loading times of web pages. This results in a faster and more responsive browsing experience.

Privacy Protection: Ad blockers often include features to enhance user privacy by blocking tracking technologies used by advertisers to monitor user behavior and collect data for targeted advertising.

Reduced Data Usage: Blocking ads can also lead to reduced data usage, which is beneficial for users on limited data plans, particularly when browsing on mobile devices.

Customization: Many ad blockers allow users to customize their ad-blocking preferences. Users can choose to block or allow ads on specific websites, making it possible to support content creators they trust.

Support for Multiple Platforms: Ad blockers are available for various platforms, including web browsers (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari ), mobile devices (iOS and Android ), and even some desktop applications.

Ethical Considerations: While ad blockers offer benefits to users, they can also have an impact on the revenue of websites and content creators that rely on advertising for income. Some users choose to disable ad blockers on websites they want to support.

ad blockers

Ads have become an integral part of the internet landscape. While they are essential for content creators and websites to generate revenue, excessive and intrusive ads can be a major nuisance for users. They slow down web pages, consume data, and compromise user privacy. That’s where a Safari ad blocker  comes in handy.

Faster Browsing: Ads are often resource-intensive, causing web pages to load slowly. With the best Safari ad blocker , you can enjoy faster page loading times, making your online experience smoother and more efficient.

Improved Privacy: Advertisers often track your online behavior through cookies and other tracking technologies. An ad blocker can help protect your privacy by blocking these tracking elements.

Reduced Data Usage: Mobile data is precious, and ads can quickly deplete your data plan. By blocking ads, you can save on data usage, allowing you to browse more without exceeding your limit.

Enhanced Security: Some ads can be malicious and carry malware or phishing attempts. A reliable ad blocker can help protect your device from these potential threats.

Better Focus: Ad-free browsing means you can concentrate on the content that matters to you, without constant distractions.

When it comes to selecting the best Safari ad blocker, there are several options available, each with its own set of features. Here are some factors to consider:

Effectiveness: Look for an ad blocker that effectively blocks ads while allowing legitimate content to load seamlessly.

Customization: A good ad blocker should offer customization options, allowing you to choose which types of ads to block and which to allow.

Privacy Features: Consider an ad blocker that includes privacy features such as cookie management and anti-tracking capabilities.

User-Friendly: The best Safari ad blocker should be easy to install and use, even for non-tech-savvy users.

Regular Updates: Ensure that the ad blocker you choose receives regular updates to stay effective against evolving ad technologies.

Some of the popular Safari ad blockers to consider include AdGuard, Adblock Plus, and uBlock Origin. These tools offer a range of features to enhance your browsing experience.

Only install browser extensions from trusted sources, and regularly review and remove any extensions you no longer need.

Be cautious about clicking on links in emails or messages, especially if they ask for sensitive information. Verify the legitimacy of websites and email senders before taking any action.

Educate Yourself on Online Security:

Stay informed about common online threats, such as phishing, malware, and social engineering, to recognize and avoid them.

Regular Backups:

Make regular backups of your important data. In case of a security incident or data loss, having a backup can be a lifesaver.

A password manager not only generates strong, unique passwords but also securely stores them for easy access. It can also help you detect and change weak or compromised passwords.

Monitor Your Online Accounts:

Regularly review your online accounts for any suspicious activity. Many services offer account activity logs and notifications for added security.

Remember that online security is an ongoing process. By implementing these additional layers of protection, you can significantly enhance your Safari browser’s security and privacy while enjoying a safer online experience.

In a world where online ads are ubiquitous, a Safari ad blocker can be your ticket to a more enjoyable and efficient web browsing experience. By blocking intrusive ads, improving page loading times, and enhancing privacy, these tools empower you to take control of your online journey.

The best Safari ad blocker is the one that aligns with your specific needs and preferences. So, take the time to explore your options, try out a few, and find the one that makes your Safari browsing experience truly stress-free. Say goodbye to annoying pop-ups and distractions, and say hello to a cleaner, faster, and ad-free Safari experience.

5 Best Ad blockers for iPhone and iPad

Ad-block iPhone iPad

If, like me, you’re getting increasingly annoyed by pop-ups appearing on your iPhone and iPad, you’ll be glad to know there’s a simple solution. Quality ad blockers for iOS will run silently on your device, preventing chatboxes, banners, pop ads, and other annoyances from bothering you.

Apple’s app store is full of free ad blocker options for iPhones, but in my experience, these are often less robust. Our recommended ad-blocking apps will intercept websites from spying, cookies from tracking, malicious connections and can even block ads on streaming sites like YouTube – features you’ll rarely find on a free app.

To help you cut through the notice, I’ve sifted through and tested ad blockers on the App Store to find the very best. If you don’t have time to read through the rest of the article, our results are summarized below.

The Best Ad blockers for iPhone and iPad List:

  • Total Adblock : My best pick for an iPhone and iPad ad-blocker. Able to stop ads from streaming sites and prevent social media trackers too.
  • Adlock : Best budget adblocker or iPhone and iPad. Comprehensive blocking abilities and plenty of scope for customization.
  • AdGuard : An open-source ad-blocker for iOS. Packed with features and has a wide range of filters to choose from.
  • 1Blocker : One of the original ad-blocking apps for iPhone. One of the first companies to make a decent ad-blocker for iPhones and iPads. Still quality.
  • Wipr : An easy-to-use ad-blocker for iPhone users. It will also block cookies and trackers but is easy on the wallet.

How we picked the best iOS ad-blocking apps

As I was testing the ad-blocking apps on the App Store, I had a very strict criteria for adblockers:

  • Value for money
  • Blocks ads beyond Safari
  • Customization
  • Additional safety

If you’re interested in knowing more about our testing methodology I cover it in more depth later in this guide.

The Best iPhone and iPad ad blockers: In-depth analysis

Here’s a list of the best adblockers for iPhone and iPad:

1. TotalAdblock

TotalAdblock is a seemingly simple app that can nevertheless deal with all types of ads, notifications and trackers.

It removes banners, video ads and pop-ups from Safari by default, and provides custom filters to block web elements that you don’t approve of. These don’t necessarily need to be ads, but anything that you’d rather not be there while you browse.

TotalAdblock also stops ads from appearing on sites using free-with-ad models, such as YouTube and Crunchyroll.  Cookies and trackers are removed and TotalAdblock also provides a dedicated filter for preventing social media sites from tracking you and placing “like” and “share” buttons on the sites you visit.

The app can speed up loading times by removing cookie and privacy warnings – though you don’t necessarily want to do this for privacy warnings. Simply removing ads should sufficiently speed up the time it takes for pages to load.

TotalAdblock can be configured to block websites and webpages known to distribute malware, or whitelist sites that you want left alone.

The basic TotalAdblock app is free, but you’ll need to pay an annual subscription to get access to the features listed above. This will also give you access to TotalAV virus protection and PC Tune-Up software too.

TotalAdblock is compatible with iPhones running iOS 11.0 or later and iPads running iPadOS or later.

  • Total ad-blocking
  • Stops social media tracking
  • Enables element blocking
  • Stops ads on streaming sites
  • Paid plan includes TotalAV antivirus
  • Annual subscription only for premium plan

BEST AD-BLOCKER:  app for iPhone and iPad. It offers comprehensive blocking of all types of advert, together with malware and virus protection.

Adlock is a powerful ad-blocker that blocks all pop-ups, auto-play ads, banners and unwanted redirects on both Safari sites and in apps. It also stops video and audio ads on streaming services such as Youtube, Twitch, and Crunchyroll – thanks to being able to evade anti-ad-blocker detection.

Adlock works by applying a series of advertising filters based on EasyList technology (the most popular list used by ad-blockers). The developers recommend using between three and five filters, though you’re free to test and apply new filters in the app’s settings. Using the filters, you can choose what should be blocked on the web pages you visit – pop-up chat boxes, for example.

Additional features include blocking all forms of online tracking scripts and warnings about malicious websites, viruses, phishing attacks, and other forms of online scam. Adlock also enables you to whitelist particular pages or entire websites as desired.

Adlock is compatible with iPhones running iOS 12.1 or later, and iPad’s running iPadOS or later.

  • Blocks all types of ads, including video
  • Bypasses ad-block walls
  • Spam and scam links warnings
  • Free trial period
  • Not the easiest for beginners

BEST BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION: ad-blocker that stops unwanted ads on both websites and apps.

AdGuard is a veteran provider in the world of ad-blocking. The open-source app removes all kinds of ads in Safari, including banners, pop-ups and video ads. You can whitelist your favorite websites or use a manual blocking tool to hide any elements on a page.

There are a selection of filters aimed directly at stopping trackers and web analytics – with around 50 to choose from in total. AdGuard also enables protection against malicious or fraudulent websites.

The user-rules module lets you create your own rules — anything from simple allow-listing of a website to something more sophisticated.

AdGuard is ostensibly free, though you’ll need to pay a subscription to access many of the features mentioned above. Prices are based on either a year’s subscription, or a lifetime’s subscription.

All plans come with a 60-day money-back guarantee. Alternatively, you can try AdGuard for free with a 14-day trial. AdGuard is compatible with iPhones running iOS 11.2 or later, and iPads running iPadOS 11.2 or later.

  • Removes all types of ad
  • Supports manual blocking
  • Plenty of filters to choose from
  • Sixty-day money-back guarantee
  • The app can sometimes freeze up
  • No monthly subscription option

HIGHLY ADAPTABLE:  with features and provides a robust ad-blocking service for iPhones and iPads.

4. 1Blocker

1Blocker is a powerful, independently built-and-maintained app specifically designed for the iOS operating system. As it’s a web extension, it won’t block anything outside of the Safari browser.

When you launch the app, it tells Safari what should be blocked in advance, rather than blocking filtered elements of the already-downloaded page. This improves display speeds and preserves battery life.

Blocking ads, cookies, comments and the like is as simple as checking the right boxes. Frequent rule updates ensure that your choices stay blocked.

There are two versions of 1Blocker, with the free option offering less functionality. The paid-for version provides system-wide firewall protection from in-app trackers, a whitelist extension, and the option to sync your settings across all iOS devices.

It also allows you to tailor the app using custom rules. These rules are divided into several categories, including: allow list, block sites, block cookies, hide elements, and make site https-only. The website has all the information you need to get started with creating custom rules.

The app is compatible with iPhones running iOS 14.2 or later, and iPads running iPadOS 14.2 or later. New customers signing up to the free version can take advantage of a two-week free trial of the app’s premium features.

  • Create custom rules
  • Whitelist extension available
  • Two-week free trial
  • Only works within Safari
  • Could confuse some users

PROVEN TRACK RECORD:  for iPhones and iPads, with plenty of scope for customization and a low subscription fee.

Wipr is a straightforward and effective ad-blocker for Safari that can be set up in seconds. It blocks all ads, trackers , cryptocurrency miners, EU cookies and GDPR notices on web pages opened in Safari. That said, Wipr specifically states that it is not a security tool, so won’t block malicious, scam or phishing sites.

Wipr can block ads on some apps, but only those that display websites using the Safari View Controller. This is essentially a screen managed by Safari that apps can use without needing to open the actual Safari browser. Apps like Tweetbot and some other social networking sites use it for all web links.

If you find that opening sites such as YouTube still results in ads, you can try using the Wipr Extra extension. This provides blocking on a few sites where the Content Blocker API isn’t enough. Wipr Extra isn’t enabled by default as it requires full website access, which raises some privacy issues. If you do want to try it, you’ll need to be running at least iOS 15.

Wipr’s block-list is updated twice a week, which ensures few ads slip past it. You don’t need to do anything – the app will check for updates for you. Indeed, this is the beauty of Wipr on the whole – you don’t need to do anything beyond activating it. While this is great for some, it could be frustrating for those who prefer a little more control.

The app is compatible with iPhones running iOS 12.0 or later, and iPads running iPadOS 12.0 or later.

  • No acceptable ads
  • No custom rules
  • No whitelist options

GREAT FOR BEGINNERS:  that’s simple to install and offers impressive blocking ability.

Methodology: How we chose the 5 best ad-block apps for iPhone and iPad

Being able to block ads is all well and good, but it’s something many people have come to expect from free apps. So what might we expect from a paid-for ad-blocker? We considered the following areas:

  • No acceptable ads: The whole point of an ad-blocker is to reduce your exposure to adverts. We don’t like those which allow paid adverts across their threshold. However, some do permit search ads, which are deemed helpful to the user. For example, contextual ads if you’re trying to buy something via a search engine. These types of advert are different to acceptable ads in that the ad-blocker isn’t receiving money for them.
  • Value for money: There are plenty of free ad-blockers out there, so we ask that paid-for versions can prove their worth. If they charge too much for a so-so service, then we don’t include them.
  • Blocks ads beyond Safari: Ad-blockers that can stop ads beyond just those displayed within Safari are preferred. Ideally, they should prevent ads in apps using free-with-ad models too, such as YouTube , Tubi, and Crunchyroll .
  • Customization: We like ad-blockers that allow for the creation of custom rules, and also those that let us add sites to a whitelist.
  • Additional safety: A good ad-blocker offers additional features, such as protection against malicious websites, viruses, and phishing attacks .

Can I use a free ad-block for iPhone and iPad?

If you’ve already spent some time looking for an app to block ads, it’s likely you’ve already come across a number of free options. There are some free ad-block apps that do the job to a basic level. However, I found them to be not as robust as their paid counterparts. They were often employing less stringent blocking rules and came with a lot less customization.

If you come across one that seems to be providing a premium-level service without charging, it’s likely they will be generating an income through other means. Namely your data, or by gatekeeping your ad viewing experience. By limiting the ads you do see to only their “acceptable ads”, they can generate money from advertisers directly. But, this defeats the whole purpose of an ad blocker.

How to enable content blockers on iPhone and iPad

  • Download your chosen ad blocker to your iPhone.
  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .
  • Under General , tap Content Blockers .
  • Activate your chosen content blocker by toggling the switch next to it to the green ON position.

Will these ad blockers work on streaming sites?

Yes, but blocking ads on streaming sites like YouTube is a little more complex. However, some of my recommended ad-blocking apps are up to the task. When testing I had the most success with Total Adblock extension for the Chrome browser.

It does require some setup, but we provide a step-by-step guide in our how to block ads on YouTube guide, so head over there for more information.

FAQs: Best ad-block for iPhone and iPad

Does apple allow ad-blockers.

Yes – Apple first announced that ad blockers would begin working on iPhones in 2015. Developers were quick to react, with the result that the App store now has hundreds to choose from. If you haven’t yet decided on a third-party ad-blocker to use, you can make a start by stopping pop-ups using the iOS built-in pop-up-blocker. Follow these instructions:

  • Under General , toggling the switch next to Block Pop-ups to the green ON position.

What are ad-blocking filters?

Ad-blocking sites make frequent reference to filters , which are how ad blockers are told to recognise exactly what an advert – or other element to be blocked – looks like. Filtering rules help them to do this.

A filtering rule is a line of code that can block an element on a website, or prevent ads from loading. Similar rules are combined into a group called a filter. Example filters include those that remove analytics tags, or one that blocks ads in a particular language.

Do ad-blockers slow websites down?

No – in fact, they almost always speed things up. Adverts fund a great deal of the content we see online. Research suggests that the code used to generate ads – and also to gather analytical data – is responsible for between 50% and 60% of the total loading time of a page.

A decent ad-blocker – such as TotalAdblock – removes all the offending elements that your computer would otherwise waste time downloading. This includes web banners, pictures, pop-up windows and – worst of all – autoplay audio and video ads. This makes pages easier to read, as well as reducing the amount of bandwidth needed to access them.

Ad-blockers have the additional benefit of improving online privacy by removing the number of cookies and stopping other behavioral tracking code from running. They can also protect you from malicious content, and will ultimately provide a better user experience overall.

Do iPhones and iPads have a built-in ad-blocker?

Technically yes, IOS devices come with a built-in ad-blocker. So you might be wondering why you would invest in another. The truth is that these built-in solutions do the bare minimum. They might prevent some pop-ups and banners, but some fall through the cracks. There is also a lot less flexibility with the IOS ad-blocker, as you can’t set specific filters and exceptions like you can on a premium product. This is why we still recommend considering external software to protect your IOS device from ads.

Best ad blockers of 2024

Get rid of those pesky ads — if you so choose

Best overall

Best for privacy, best at removing ads, best for insights, best for protection, best for pop-ups, how we test.

The best ad blockers make it simple and easy to block not just intrusive advertising, but also block rogue ads and website malware.

Ad Blocker on Laptop

1. Best overall 2. Best for privacy 3. Best at removing ads 4. Best for insights 5. Best for protection 6. Best for pop-ups 7. FAQs 8. How we test

The No. 1 reason most would cite for using an ad blocker is to eliminate webpage disruptions. Depending on the site and the quality of the ads, the advertising can cause the accidental removal of text, page cluttering, and loading issues.

Another reason for using an ad blocker is to protect your privacy. By design, most advertisers now use background tracking tools such as cookies to create ads based on your online history. This is why, for example, you might visit Amazon .com to look for a new television and soon after start seeing ads for smart TVs on Facebook and other social networking sites you visit.

Ad blockers can also help to remove malvertising, which criminals use to spread malware . It will also cut down on the downloadable content on your machines, which many describe as "web bloat."

Altogether, web ads have gone from being a simple annoyance to actively intruding and disrupting our internet experience, so it's no wonder ad blockers have become increasingly popular.

We've looked at the range of those available, tested them, and otherwise run them through their paces for issues such as usability and accessibility. Below, we've listed what we think are the best ad blockers currently available.

We've also listed the best web browsers .

Website screenshot for uBlock Origin

1. uBlock Origin

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The first product on the list, uBlock Origin, does a terrific job at blocking malware , web promotions, trackers, and the like. Free and open-source, uBlock Origin promises to be “easy on CPU and memory” while blocking online apps. In addition, the software includes various filter lists previously identified for known advertising and malware. You can also add custom filters with relative ease. As you do, however, memory consumption will increase, which could negatively affect older systems. Regardless, it will still consume much less memory than other options.

More advanced users will want to activate uBlock Origin’s dynamic filtering tool. You can adjust the scripts and domains a webpage can load by doing so.  You shouldn’t confuse uBlock Origin with uBlock. Although the same developer created both, uBlock is now owned by Adblocker Plus. They are two completely different options.

Website screenshot for Privacy Badger

2. Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger, which comes from the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, blocks trackers, not necessarily ads. It does so using unique algorithms and no domain blacklists like other tools. By taking this approach, Privacy Badger attempts to separate the good and the bad without disrupting the website's flow.

With this solution, there is some wiggle room to make changes. For example, for whatever reason, perhaps Privacy Badger is blocking your favorite website's cookies, which are essential to customize your user experience. You can change this in just a few steps.

Overall, if privacy is your most important reason for considering a blocker, this might be the one for you.

Website screenshot for AdBlock Plus

3. Adblocker Plus

If you're looking for an ad blocker that's been around for a while, you can't do much better than Adblock Plus. Its ease of use and price (free) have made it a winner for many years. After installation, Adblock Plus immediately gets to work and begins blocking and obstructing things you probably won't want to see. In the process, it does a great job of not negatively affecting the look and feel of a website.

Despite its pedigree, one criticism you'll hear most about Adblock Plus is its " acceptable ads " policy. These are described as those that "aren't intrusive or annoying. They are respectful, don't interfere with content, and are clearly labeled with the word "advertisement" or its equivalent." Of course, these words are highly subjective, which is probably one of the reasons decisions on what makes a committee now makes an acceptable ad. Regardless, you can now manually remove these ads in a few steps.

A minor point about Adblock Plus is its sometimes confusing way of presenting extra features that can also be beneficial. This confusion is primarily because of its design. My advice: take the time to look at the Adblock Plus instructions; you might be surprised by what you discover.

Website screenshot for Ghostery

4. Ghostery

Ghostery features a terrific design and lots of customization options. Better still, it provides a much higher level of insight about what's being blocked and how you're being tracked online. With the free version of Ghostery, you get a tracker and ad blocking, and custom blocking preferences. For as little as $3.99 per month, you can get Ghostery Plus, which ads extension themes, historical stats, and more.

The biggest drawback of Ghostery is there's no way to add customizable filters. In other words, you get what you get.

Website screenshot for AdLock

One of the newest solutions on this list, AdLock, does a terrific job at zeroing in and eliminating malware, phishing sites, and more through various browsers. For the full benefit of AdLock, it’s best to buy a yearly subscription. However, its Chrome extension is free.

AdLock is very good at protecting your online privacy, and it's a lightweight solution, which is vital for many. Though relatively new, AdLock is already one of the best ad blockers and worth your consideration.

On the negative side, AdLock support could be better, and hopefully, in time, it will be.

Website screenshot for Poper Blocker

6. Poper Blocker

I've included Poper Blocker on this list, even though it's a secondary tool. With Poper Blocker, whatever pop-ups another adblocker might have missed will get squashed forever. Only available for Chromium-based browsers, the solution also goes after pop-users, overlays, and other nuisances. When a pop-up is removed, you'll get a notification, which comes in hand when something you do want to see is flagged.

Because of its limited use, you should find an ad-blocker that best suits your needs and add Poper Blocker. You'll be happy you did. Although Poper Blocker is free, you'll need to pay for a membership to access every feature.

We've also featured the best privacy tools and anonymous browsers .

Is advertising always bad?

On the benefits side, online advertising, especially e-commerce sites, can remember who you are and adjust its pages accordingly. Have you noticed how your favorite shopping store  always  seems to have what you're looking for on the home page or is running a sale on your favorite shorts? Again, you can thank online advertising.

These ads can also help you better compare products, so you're always paying the best price — if that means visiting another site. Online advertising can also track the latest trends, news headlines, and more, so you're a more savvy shopper or citizen.

To test for the best ad blockers, we downloaded and installed a number of extensions for different browsers, especially Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. We ran through their settings to see how easy they were to customize and set up. Then we went surfing through the internet, especially on mainstream media websites which are flooded with advertising. We kept a lookout for how well ads were blocked, and whether using the ad blocker adversely impacted our viewing experience.

Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Developer Response ,

Hi, The blue icon is not something we can change -- Apple does not provide the functionality to gray out the icon if a app is active on a particular page. Because AdBlock is allowing ads, according to Apple, that means it's active. We wish we could change the behavior but we can't! Please do provide your feedback to Apple since this is something they can change. --AdBlock Support

Ad Block forever

Ad Block customer (forever). My MacBook and I - as an internet user(s) can never be without Ad Block. My daily 16 hours internet viewing and/or usage would not be as enjoyable, time efficient or educational - if I was constantly distracted with solitations, promotional items and marketing of products sent to me that I never need or will never purchase - I would not own a computer.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear AdBlock has improved your browsing experience. --AdBlock Support

Stopped Working

I've been using this specific adblock for years and although it works on some of the other machines I own it has stopped working as intended recently. Every now and then an ad would slip by which a quick refresh would fix but now ads still pop up but are blacked out with audio still coming from the ads. I don't think this recent behaviour is deserving of anything less than 3 stars but imo is no longer that 5 star product I used to love.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/mammals/" title="mammal">mammal</a> species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.</p> <p>Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

adblocker bester safari

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.</p> <p>Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide. I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

‘Challengers’ and the Best Movies About Tennis

'challengers' — which puts zendaya at the apex of a love triangle — is one of the most engaging movies to ever center around the world of tennis. from documentaries to satires to bio pics and thrillers, here are the others..

adblocker bester safari

For non-fans, tennis can seem like an unexciting sport. Or, at least, it lacks the cinematic drama of football or baseball, two of Hollywood’s favorite subjects when it comes to sports movies. In Luca Guadagnino ’s new film Challengers , however, tennis prodigy Tashi Duncan ( Zendaya ) meaningfully declares that “Tennis is a relationship.” And in Challengers , perhaps the most engaging movie to ever center around the world of tennis, it’s the relationships that keep the drama alive.

Set over a single tension-filled match, the film is an electric, kinetic sports movie that never really feels like a sports movie at all. It also makes you want to either pick up a racquet yourself or go watch another tennis-themed flick. And Hollywood has made a surprising number of movies set around the court, from dramas to comedies to documentaries. Whether you’re looking for a biopic like King Richard or a satire like 7 Days in Hell , here are the 10 best tennis movies out there— Challengers included.

Challengers (2024)

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, Challengers sets the stakes high both on the court and in the fraught relationships between injured tennis prodigy Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), her world-famous tennis champion husband Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and their long-time pal/rival Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). Art, whose career is coached by Tashi, is ready to retire, but not before he takes down Patrick, an old friend with a romantic history with Tashi. The narrative shifts between timelines, slowly revealing just why these two players want to win so badly. It’s a showcase for all of the actors, but also for fashion designer Jonathan Anderson, who created the aspirational costumes, and for composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, whose score is the icing on the already sexy cake.

Battle of the Sexes (2017)

Battle of the Sexes , directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton and written by Simon Beaufoy, recreates a real-life event in tennis history—with a few dramatized flourishes. The film is based around the 1973 match between Billie Jean King ( Emma Stone ) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), a pivotal moment in women’s sports. Although the outcome is relatively well-known, the filmmakers keep the narrative taut and uncertain, showcasing the actual investment of both players. Stone and Carell were both nominated for Golden Globes and Carell earned a SAG nod for, but the hair and makeup transformations are as memorable as the acting.

Wimbledon (2004)

The early 2000s brought a deluge of romantic comedies, some more memorable than others. One of these second tier films was Wimbledon , from British director Richard Loncraine. It starred Paul Bettany as faltering tennis pro Peter Colt and Kirsten Dunst as up-and-coming player Lizzie Bradbury, who meet cute when Peter earns a wild card slot at Wimbledon. It featured a lot of real tennis—pro athletes were cast as characters and served as tennis doubles for the leads—and scenes were filmed during the actual 2003 Wimbledon Championships. It’s a reasonably sweet love story, with charming performances from Bettany and Dunst, and fans will spot several now-famous actors in the mix, including James McAvoy and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It’s not a top-seed film, but it’s a likable watch with a sense of authenticity.

King Richard (2021)

Venus and Serena Williams are two of tennis’s most interesting figures, as is their father Richard Williams, who coached the pair to pro success. Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biographical drama King Richard recounts the young life of the Williams sisters (Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton) and their rise to fame under the guidance of their father ( Will Smith ). The film, which also stars Jon Bernthal and Aunjanue Ellis, is a compelling look at what it takes to become great, especially if you are a Black woman in America. The role won Smith his infamous Oscar for Best Actor, and pulled in dozens of nominations and other awards, including an NAACP Image Awards. It’s one to revisit if you missed it when it first came out.

Borg vs. McEnroe (2017)

During the 1980s, Björn Borg and John McEnroe had a memorable rivalry, which came to a head at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships. Danish filmmaker Janus Metz Pedersen’s underrated film Borg vs. McEnroe showcases this match and all of the drama surrounding it with compelling flair. Sverrir Gudnason plays Borg, a disciplined Swedish champion, while Shia LaBeouf embodies McEnroe, known for his abrasive demeanor. Although the film didn’t make a huge impact on release, it’s an engaging look at how two very different people approached the same sport. It also makes tennis seem surprisingly cinematic—a challenging feat.

7 Days in Hell (2015)

Jake Szymanski’s mockumentary 7 Days in Hell was inspired by John Isner’s real-life match against Nicolas Mahut at 2010 Wimbledon Championships, although it’s far more ridiculous. Presented as an HBO Sports documentary incorporating BBC footage, the movie follows two pro players, Aaron Williams ( Andy Samberg ) and Charles Poole (Kit Harington), who play the longest tennis match in history. It has a stacked cast, with Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen, June Squibb and Fred Armisen all making appearances, and Jon Hamm steps in as the narrator. The filmmakers even tapped actual players like Serena Williams and John McEnroe to be part of the faux documentary, which is hilarious and edgy at the same time.

Citizen Ashe (2021)

Arthur Ashe made essential contributions to both tennis and civil rights. Citizen Ashe , from directors Rex Miller and Sam Pollard, charts Ashe’s rise after he became the first Black player to win the U.S. Open in 1968. The documentary features commentary from Johnnie Ashe, Billie Jean King, John McEnroe, Donald Dell and Lenny Simpson, among others, and focuses on why and how Ashe became a political activist who wanted to use his platform for social justice. It’s a well-made and thoughtful tribute to Ashe, although it remained out of the awards race the year it was released.

Match Point (2005)

The world of tennis never seemed as sinister as it did in Match Point , Woody Allen’s psychological thriller, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Jonathan Rhys Meyers played Chris Wilton, a retired tennis pro who has become an instructor at a high-end London club. It’s there he meets Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode), his sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer), and his American fiancée Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson), which results in a tangled mess of marriages, break-ups and affairs. Things get pretty dark—if you haven’t seen it don’t spoil the mid-story twist for yourself online—and it features a strong cast with a lot of notable London locations. Sure, the tennis isn’t really that important to the narrative, but as a backdrop for the scheming of the elite rich it’s a good one.

Venus and Serena (2012)

This documentary about Williams sisters is a solidly engaging watch. Directed by Maiken Baird and Michelle Major, the film played at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival and took an inside look at the two players’ lives and careers with insight from their father Richard and tennis coach Oracene Price. It’s a relatively surface-level investigation into the sisters, with some depths left to be desired, but the pair are inherently compelling, especially when you get to see them play. It makes for a good double feature with 2016 doc Serena , from director Ryan White.

Strokes of Genius (2018)

Yet another movie about a tennis rivalry, Strokes of Genius documents the 2008 Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal , which is now considered to be one of the best matches in the sport. The film, directed by Andrew Douglas, combines footage and interviews to recount the famous match, which is compared to other similar pair-ups like Borg versus McEnroe. Hearing the athletes themselves reminiscence on the historical moment is the best part, although the surrounding commentary is equally reflective. It’s one of the better tennis documentaries out there, especially if you are too young to remember the actual match.
