It is a very attractive tourist destination with its fortress, cultural and historical monuments and archeological cities . Skopje also is a modern, political, economic and cultural center. Day 3 Skopje>Ohrid

After breakfast continue to Ohrid. On the way we will visit a Winery in the countryside located just west of the town of Demir Kapija on the slopes of Veliko Brdo, (the Grand Hill). The Winery is certainly one of the success stories of North Macedonian viticulture and here it is sometimes possible to taste from the fermentation tanks wine varieties such as; Stanushina a local grape variety found only in the Tikves region as well as Temjanika, Zilavka and Vranac grown in the ex-Yugoslavia territ ories. Also, more international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced. Tikves wine region is the biggest and the most important wine region of North Macedonia spread over 13.000 hectares, along the same latitude as Rioja and Ribera del Due ro. As the Mediterranean climate from the south collides with the continental climate from the north, it creates an area most remarkable for grape growing and wine production on the entire Balkan Peninsula. We will have cooking class at the winery restaurant and enjoy the meal with a wine tasting. Afterwards continue to Ohrid. We will have sailing tour with sunset drinks. Dinner at local restaurant.

Day 4 Ohrid

After breakfast we will have city tour in Ohrid. We will visit the Church St. Sofia, built between the 11th and 14th century, which was the seat of the Archbishop. “St . Clement of Ohrid founded the first University of Europe and educated 3.500 students. St. John at Kaneo, stands alone on a small peninsula which juts out into the lake at the western end of the Old Town, and provides spectacular panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, Samuil fortress, Saint Painteleimon Church, The Holy Virgin of Peribleptos Church, Icon Galery and old Bazaar. Afterwards continue to Vevcani where we will have lunch in a traditional restaurant in the Village. After the lunch we will visit the village Vevcani built on a steep hillside and sheltered by a mountain. Its architecture is most appealing with many old houses and buildings of all styles and shapes. The famous Vevcani springs have a water flow of between 400-4000Lt/sec which explains the many water-mills in this area. Afterwards, continue back to Ohrid . Dinner at local restaurant

From there we drive to St. Naum Monastery. The site is known for its springs that come from the upper Lake Prespa and cross the Galicica Mountain to come out in a small lake where the surplus falls in Lake Ohrid. Built on the rocky hill right above the lake, the monastery of St . Naum is one of the most beautiful pilgrimage spots in Mace donia. The monastery itself contains a small Orthodox church where Saint Naum is buried. Decorated with frescoes, it is a pure jewel of Byzantine art . Frequently asked questions, why us why should i book with aperture journeys.

We are passionate about travel and believe a meaningful life must include rich memories, and travel to new places while experiencing  different cultures and people is key in achieving this. We are firm believers in the idea that great things happen when we step outside our comfort zone.  In 30 years of traveling and a long list of great experiences and memories I can honestly say this is true.

When developing our tours we spend alot of time with “boots on the ground” at the locations.  We are vetting our suppliers, evaluating risk, looking for new and interesting places to see, building experiences that will make great memories. We look back on 30 years of world travel and understand what makes a great travel experience.  We are a small business and are doing what we love and want to share the experience with others. Our groups are small 6- 10 persons which makes for a better touring experience.

Our philosophy on hotels is to book 4 & 5 star hotels and when possible choose hotels that are centrally located to allow a short walk to tourist ares with shopping and restaurants.  This way you can enjoy your free time easily.  There are times when 4 or 5 star is not available so we have to choose wisely in this case.

We love to try the local cuisine, wines and liqueurs that is why most of your meals are included. We think it is great to explore local restaurants and order from the menu and try to do this as much as possible.  We do not prefer to have “Half Board” meals at the hotel, however at times it makes sense, but we try our best to kept HB meals to a minimum.

Entry Requirements What are the entry requirements for these countries?

This tour visits Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Croatia. In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.

We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps. There is no visa required for U.S. or Canadian citizens.

If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

For the most up-to-date entry requirements for these destinations visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/COVID-19-Country-Specific-Information.html

Weather What is the climate like in this part of the world?

The Balkan Peninsula is a very diverse region that encompasses variously different climate zones.

Albania: mild temperate; cool, cloudy, wet winters; hot, clear, dry summers; interior is cooler and wetter

Montenegro: Mediterranean climate, hot dry summers and autumns and relatively cold winters with heavy snowfalls in mountain regions

Bosnia Herzegovina: hot summers and cold winters; areas of high elevation have short, cool summers and long, severe winters; mild, rainy winters along coast

Croatia: Mediterranean and continental; continental climate predominant with hot summers and cold winters; mild winters, dry summers along coast

Transportation What type of transportation will we use?

Our groups are small so we use smaller coaches usually about 15 pax capacity.  They are able to travel down narrow roads providing better access.

Due to their size there are no toilets onboard these types of coaches however we make regular stops to ensure your comfort along the way . Often, we’ll break up a long transfer with an included walking tour in a location of interest en route to our destination, so you’ll have ample time to stretch your legs as well.

Occasionally we travel on private boats or ferry boats to reach our destination.  These can vary in size from 20 passenger private vessels to large ferry boats capable of hundreds of passengers.

Physical requirements How strenuous are the activities?

You will need physical stamina to participate unassisted in touring activities for 6 to 8 hours with walking distances of 3 to 5 miles. Up to 15000 steps or more. Of course we will take frequents breaks to enjoy the food and drink.

You will walk for at least 2 hours daily and up to 5 hrs on terrain of various types like cobble stone streets, uneven surfaces, forest/lake trails and at times some steep inclines.

You will need physical ability to handle your luggage getting into your hotel room, entering and exiting boats and boarding aircraft using stairs when a jetway in not available, which is common in these countries.

Luggage How much luggae can I bring?

You must be able to comfortably handle all your luggage by yourself at all times. Therefore, we strongly urge you to limit your luggage to one piece of luggage(of a size you can comfortably handle), a hand carry bag and a personal item.  Luggage the size of airline carry-on dimensions is strongly suggested as there may be times requiring you to carry your bag up stairs onto airplanes, etc.   Your luggage will need to fit in a taxi for short transfers.

Airports Are the arriving and departing airports service by major airlines?

Yes! As of this writing, Tirana International Airport (TIA) and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) connects to many large European cities by these major airlines and their US partners: British Airways (OneWorld – American Airlines); Austrian, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance – United Airlines).

Photo / Video What is photo / video instruction?

Photo & Video instruction is short lessons provided by us to you throughout the tour to help you improve your photography and videography skills.  They may include lessons on Composition, Lighting, or posing for example.

Shopping Will there be time for shopping?

Yes! We carefully plan our tours to assure that the pace isn’t too busy or too idle. You’ll have free time to shop or to simply relax in the lovely surroundings. Remember to leave space in your suitcase. If you want to bring back some wine remember to bring one of those plastic wine travel pouches.

albania macedonia tour

It’s hard to find a patch of Europe that as secluded as this one. Hard, but not impossible. Among the rugged mountains and green fields of Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia there are plenty of shepherds, monasteries, lakes, valleys and Byzantine churches – what’s lacking is crowds. It’s taken decades for the Balkans to wipe away memories of conflict and communism, but (amazingly) they’ve emerged strong and smiling. From hip cafes in Skopje and the soft shores of Lake Ohrid to the mosques of picture-perfect Prizren, this 15-day adventure showcases Balkan beauty at its very best.

Trip overview

  • Explore the remote northern reaches of Albania and take one of the world’s best boat trips with a cruise through the mountainous corridors of Lake Koman
  • Experience daily life in the Valbona Valley with a stay at a local guesthouse. Clink glasses with the locals in the village and hike the rugged valley passes.
  • Sail across the blue waters of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest lakes. No wonder North Macedonia and Albania share this beautiful attraction – nobody would want to let it go.
  • Kososvo is rich in history and contrasts. Step back in time and learn about the infamous Battle of Kosovo on a day trip to the Field of Blackbirds, before embracing the modern culture thriving in Prishtina, Europe’s youngest capital.
  • Lose yourself in Tirana, the Albanian capital full of a revitalised urban energy, and partake in the local's favourite pastime: drinking coffee and people-watching.
  • Weather in this part of Europe can be unpredictable. Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. On the other hand, the weather in the mountains can be cold and wet throughout the year. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Mire se vini – welcome to Tirana, Albania. If you arrive early, perhaps get your bearings of the city with a walk around town. Tirana is filled with activity, from its traffic to its nightlife, but on its doorstep are mosques, citadels, Ottoman architecture and museums. This is a truly progressive city that's working hard to alleviate the Soviet bloc feeling that pervaded it for so long. In the evening, perhaps head out for dinner with your new crew.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Tirana - Sky Tower - ALL400
  • Tirana - National History Museum - ALL700
  • Tirana - National Art Gallery - ALL200

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm – check with reception to confirm the time and place. If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please have these on hand. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

This morning head out on a leader-led orientation walk of central Tirana. It’s the capital of Albania and its biggest city, but it's still small and compact, with architectural influences from Italy and Turkey. Visit the Skanderbeg Monument, the mosaic on the National History Museum and the Palace of Culture, which are all located on Skanderbeg Square. The main sight in Tirana is the Et'hem Bey Mosque, which sits right on the city's main square. The mosque is currently closed for extensive renovation works, but you can still take a look at the frescoes outside and in the portico that depict trees, waterfalls and bridges. After lunch, take a local bus to Shkoder, one of the oldest cities in Europe (approximately 2 hours). Upon arrival, head out on a short walk with your leader along the Pjaca – the main pedestrian street – lined with 19th-century architecture and dominated by Ebu Beker Mosque. Later in the afternoon, why not head north of the city to visit the Venetian era Rozafa Castle, set high on a mountain with panoramic views of the Albanian countryside.

  • Shkoder - Rozafa Castle - ALL400

Take an early morning transfer to Lake Koman (approximately 1.5 hours), where you'll board a private boat between Koman and Fierza, in the remote north eastern corner of the country, passing through Albanian Alps gorge (approximately 3 hours). Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to stop for a refreshments and swim. Take in the scenery of cliff walls on both sides of the narrow lake. The mountains that surround the lake and can reach over 1700 metres in height are almost uninhabited, except for the occasional settlement. This is one of the most beautiful boat rides you will ever take – emerald water merging with the green vegetation dotting the bright white cliffs. Upon arrival to Fierza, you'll be transferred to your guesthouse in Valbona Valley, where a delicious home cooked meal awaits.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Lake Koman - Private boat ride

Take an excursion deeper into the remote Valbona Valley – complete with green meadows of traditional houses, farmland, and alpine trees. Due to the remoteness of the region and the lack of tourist infrastructure, today's activities will come as a surprise to all of us, including the leader! You may go for a hike in the surrounding mountains, walking through wide valleys and thick forests, or you might simply hang out in the village with the locals. One of the best things about Albania is the people – their warmth to strangers is infectious and you're bound to find yourself having a chat and swapping stories over a glass of raki or two. This is a great place to discover the history of Albania from the people who have lived through it, and to learn about the local way of life. Perhaps discover more about the stories of bloody feuds, said to be carried out in the name of the Kanun code: the customs that governed all aspects of life in the mountains.

Today you'll cross the border into Kosovo by private vehicle (approximately 2 hours). Tiny Kosovo is Europe’s newest (official) country: a handful of landlocked mountains, poppy-dotted meadows and oak forests smack bang in the middle of the Balkans. The shadow of conflict in the late 90s has kept Kosovo off traveller's radars but go there today and you can feel that shadow lifting, and Europe’s youngest member is definitely making up for lost time. The first stop in this newly independent country will be the Decani Monastery. Time stands still here – a place of stunning art heritage, but whose symbolic significance as a Serbian Orthodox cultural monument unfortunately makes it vulnerable to destruction. Continue on to Peja (Pec in Serbian) – the gateway to the Rugova Mountains and a major agricultural centre (approximately 30 minutes). Visit the beautifully restored Peja Bazaar, dating back to Ottoman times, and Bajrakli Mosque. Having been destroyed twice in the last 80 years, the bazaar has been fully rebuilt after the Kosovo War, according to historical Ottoman architecture, and is one of the many protected monuments in Kosovo.

  • Dečani Monastery - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Please note that the restaurant at our hotel for the nights in Peja is doubling as a wedding venue for people from the surrounding local villages. While this can be interesting to witness please be aware that this may come with a certain noise level. It's best to come with an open mind and appreciate the newlyweds most important day, but also bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to the village of Drelaj, which is deep in the Rugova Valley and close to the Montenegrin border (approximately 30 minutes). The Rugova Mountains rise to over 2400 metres and were declared a national park in 2013. Drelaj will be your base to explore the surrounding area on a 3 to 4-hour guided hike. The Rugova Valley is often compared to Switzerland in its landscape, and here at the foot of Hjala mountain, be surrounded by tall grass pastures dotted with wildflowers, the sound of cow bells drifting through the valley, and simple wooden shacks and stone houses with smoke drifting up to the granite cliffs above. Afterwards, you'll be able to rest your weary bones with lunch at a local family home. Head back to the hotel in the early evening, with your night then free – perhaps try the local Birra Peja, brewed here in town.

  • Rugova Valley - Hike including Lunch

Please note that today's hike in the Rugova Valley is of a higher physical rating compared to the overall trip itself. Please speak to your leader to get an accurate idea of what the hike looks like, and decide for yourself whether you are prepared to participate.

Journey to the south of the country today, to Kosovo's second biggest, and arguably its most beautiful, city – Prizren (approximately 1.5 hours). Along the way, you’ll stop by Gjakova to walk to the Sufi Tekke of the Halveti Order (one of the Dervish sects). It is very interesting as we get to talk often to the Sheh of the order. Inside of the tekke, there are graves of all the previous sheh's since 1600 when the order was established. Afterwards, walking along the Carshia (main street), and stop at the Mosque of Hadumi. If you’re lucky, the main Imam of Gjakova will speak to you and give an Albanian interpretation of Islamic dogmas (principles), with plenty of time for questions. Later on, head to Prizren, with a stop at a restaurant on the Drini River. On arrival, head out an orientation walk, strolling alongside the Bistrica river, taking in the cobbled Shadervan square and the Old Stone Bridge. Explore the city’s famous mosques contrasted with abandoned Serbian Orthodox churches. Wander the streets and do some people watching in in Shadervan square, before another memorable Balkan sunset.

  • Gjakova - Sufi Tekke of the Halveti Order
  • Gjakova - Hadumi Mosque

Today is free to explore the city's sights, after venturing out on an included visit to Prizren's sixth century Kalaja Fortress. This fortress sits proudly on a hilltop above the town and has a 43-step staircase hidden in a tunnel that connects to the river, and gives you views over the city. Make sure you visit the House of the Albanian League of Prizren, where in 1878 the Assembly of Prizren gathered to consolidate Albanian leaders to unite and protect the country against foreign threats. If you feel energetic, you may want to consider walking upstream along the Bistrica River, where you might meet locals tending to their flocks of sheep among mountainous scenery. Otherwise, if your group is up for it, get together to hire a minibus and drive for about an hour for lunch and wine tasting in the vineyards of Rahovec. The owners of wineries and cultivators of grapes are there to talk about the production technologies and approaches. After this, you could go for a walk along the vineyards just outside the town. This region in Kosovo is picturesque and has been a highlight for many travellers. Afterwards, spend another night in Prizren, where there’s a lot of great eateries. Prizren is commonly known as the gastronomic heart of Kosovo.

Take a day trip to Prishtina and surrounds. The capital of Kosovo is currently reinventing itself as a major commercial centre in the region, and its historical importance makes it an essential highlight. First head to Kosovo Polje (Field of Blackbirds), which the country is named after. There is a memorial here that commemorates the important 1389 battle of Kosovo – a skirmish that led to the Ottoman Empire finally taking control of this area of the Balkans. Nearby is the tomb of Sultan Murat, leader of the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century. You'll then get to visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gracanica Monastery – one of King Milutin's last monumental endowments. The afternoon is free to explore the vibrant city of Prishtina, perhaps visiting the Ethnographic Museum, the Sultan Fatih Mosque or the Kosovo Museum. Check out the Newborn Monument, which was unveiled on the day Kosovo declared its independence in 2008. Nearby is a brass statue of Bill Clinton – thanks for the President’s role in ending the war. After exploring the city, head to the nearby Bear Sanctuary – a 16-hectare area of woodland providing a home for rescued dancing bears.

Craggy mountain backdrops, time-weathered monasteries, stunning lake panoramas, hearty national cuisine – North Macedonia is jam-packed full of the good stuff. Excellent hiking can be had in the mountain forests, Lake Ohrid’s waters rival the clarity of Croatia’s, and 500 years of Ottoman rule can be acutely felt in the capital’s bazaars. And to round it all out, the locals will be delighted to have you. This morning head out early and travel to Skopje, North Macedonia's capital city. Upon arrival, take an orientation walk past Byzantine domes, Turkish baths, and also newly built neo-classical buildings and grand monuments. In the afternoon, wander past the mosques, caravanserais and hamams that fill its winding streets – a testament to Skopje’s Ottoman past. Perhaps take a step back to those times with a visit to the Daut Pasha Hamam, or journey through the humbling Holocaust Museum to learn how Macedonia suffered during this tragic chapter of history.

Venture out to Matka Canyon – a deep ravine cut into the Suva mountains by the Treska River, 15 kilometres southwest of the city. This area is home to several medieval monasteries, caves, and over 70 species of endemic butterflies. There is the option to explore the canyon's sights by boat. Alternatively, you can take one of the many nature walks in the canyon, or up to tracks that hug the ridge high above the valley. Return back to Skopje, with the remaining part of the day free for you to continue exploring this exciting city. Perhaps take the Mount Vodno cable car to Millennium Cross, and for the views back down across the city. Get lost in the narrow lanes of Carsija – Skopje's most atmospheric neighbourhood or take in the stone bridge over the river Vardar – an iconic sight that acts as a handy connection between Macedonia Square and the Old Bazaar. Perhaps visit the Museum of the City of Skopje, housed in the old Railway Station, which is itself a unique piece of history. For dinner this evening you could head to the Old Bazaar or the restaurants in the Debar Maalo area.

  • Skopje - Matka Canyon visit and Boat Ride
  • Matka Canyon - Boat Ride - MKD400

Travel by local bus from Skopje to Ohrid, situated on a lake with the same name (approximately 3 hours). Europe’s oldest lake, and one of the oldest human settlements in the world, Lake Ohrid has a wealth of historic sites and religious monuments to discover. Ohrid is an eternal town, a magical hill whose primordial pulsation links ancient and modern times forever. The town is said to have once been home to 365 churches, one for each day of the year, earning it the nickname ‘the Macedonian Jerusalem’, while historical excavations date back to Neolithic times. Despite being a World Heritage site for over 30 years, the town remains under the radar of visitors. Get your bearings on an orientation walk around Ohrid, maybe picking up a bargain or two in the vibrant Old Bazaar.

Take to the lake on a morning cruise on the turquoise waters of Lake Ohrid. The rest of the day is free for you to discover the area. There are many churches and monasteries to visit, but one of the most popular is the Macedonian Orthodox Church of Sveti Jovana Kaneo, situated on a rocky outcrop above the town, overlooking the lake. Past the church you can wander around to the back of town, exploring the old walls and fortress, and admiring the views of the lake. The Sveti Naum Monastery is also a great option, lying on the shores of the lake south of town, with well-kept grounds that are home to peacocks. The ancient Tsar Samoil’s fortress stands on the top of Ohrid Hill and looks across the town, while a 2000-year-old Roman theatre was uncovered near the Upper Gate – in summer it’s again being used for concerts and performances.

  • Ohrid - Robev Family House National Museum - MKD150
  • Ohrid - St Jovan Church - MKD150

Say goodbye to the endless, merging blues of lake and sky as you board your private transfer across the border into Albania for your journey back to Tirana (approximately 3 hours). On arrival, your day is then free to explore. Feel the urban energy of this transforming city, where colour splashes enliven drab communist architecture, and if there’s time perhaps take a cable car ride up Dajti Mountain for a breathtaking overview of the city below. If you stay in town longer consider heading out to Kruja, the old capital of Albania. Tonight, perhaps gather together the group for dinner. You could head to Blloku (the Block) – once the domain of the Communist party’s inner circle and now home to designer cafes, glizy restaurants, and boutique bars. For something a little more traditional maybe head to an old house restaurant, where the menus are filled with Albanian recipes. Raise a raki to this adventure!

The Perfect South Balkans Travel Itinerary: Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo

Johnny

  • Last Updated On: September 10, 2023

After visiting the Balkans of former Yugoslavia including Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro , Bosnia and Herzagovina , and Slovenia , it was time for me to plan another road trip to the South Balkan. Of course I had spent a copious amount of time in Greece already (which is considered south Balkans), but this trip would be focused on the much less visited and totally underrated countries of Albania , Macedonia, and Kosovo.

Koman Lake Ferry

Planning a trip to these off the beaten path countries can be daunting because there is less information on the subject. Let’s be honest, if you tell a Western European you are going to Tirana, they will most likely respond with “wait by why??”

Ksamil Beach albania

Don’t worry, those people have no idea what they’re missing out on and if you want to see beautiful mountain landscapes, stunning beaches, mesmerizing lakes, and incredibly cheap prices to boot, look no further than these places.

Prizren Kosovo

This post will go into detail about my trip and will help you plan yours as well. You do  not have to  do my exact trip. You can break it down depending on how much time you have and which places you want to see!

Where I went in the South Balkans: Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo

Lake Ohrid

I had just over two weeks to spend in the region and originally I was going to focus it primarily on Albania but I figured this might be too much time to spend on a country this small (turns out I was right). After researching the region, I figured I might as well visit the neighboring countries of Macedonia and Kosovo as well which turned out to be an amazing decision.

If you don’t have at least two weeks to dedicate to this trip, then what I did might feel too rushed. Instead, I would focus most of my time on Albania first, before doing offshoot trips to Kosovo or Macedonia. If time isn’t of issue, then just note that I spent most of my time in Albania because there is the most stuff to do there.

Here is a map of my itinerary:

For this itinerary to work in the allotted time, then you must rent a car. While public transportation is widely available and there are buses that connect Tirana to locations all over the region, it just is not as efficient as renting a car.

Rent a car Albania

In addition, a lot of the charm in these countries is visiting smaller towns that are not well connected or a mountain viewpoint over the Adriatic or Lake Ohrid.

Albania Landscape

Renting a car is very cheap in the region. I started my trip in Tirana and a rental car could be had for as cheap as €10. I ended up paying about €18 a day for full insurance coverage and from a more reputable company.

The roads in the these countries are plenty good when you’re on the main freeways.

Starting point

With this trip, you can see from the itinerary map that it is just a circular loops that travels through Albania, Macedonia, and Kosovo. You can essentially start in any of the three capitals (Tirana, Skopje, and Pristina) and make it work.

This way you won’t need to mess with one way drop offs with your rental car and will not need to book multi-city flight itineraries. For this trip, I started in Tirana.

From Tirana, I spent two nights exploring the capital before driving south to the old city of Berat. From Berat, I drove south further to explore the coast. Then another night in Gjirokaster before driving to Macedonia. In Macedonia, I only spent time exploring Lake Ohrid and Skopje (which is mostly what people do).

Berat Albania

Start in Tirana

Tirana is hands-down one of my favorite cities in the Balkans, full of incredible restaurants, cafés serving up perfect coffee for less than $1, funky museums, interesting open-air markets, and vibrant street art.

Tirana

Spend your first day in Tirana getting acquainted with the area around Skanderbeg Square, visiting Bunkart 2 and/or the House of Leaves, checking out the socialist mural on the National History Museum, visiting the newly renovated Pazar I Ri market area, and walking around the hipster neighborhood of Blloku which used to be the center of Communist rule during Enver Hoxha’s murderous reign.

Tirana

This is a great area to go out at night: I strongly recommend Colonial Cocktail Academy for inventive mixology, Radio Bar for chilled-out drinks in a funky vintage-inspired settling, Nouveau Vague for one of the most photogenic terraces in Tirana, and Kino for a lovely summer garden and fabulous mixed drinks.

Nouvelle Vogue

Berat, Albania

Berat Tirana

From Tirana, the first stop on this epic road trip is to the old town of Berat. Whereas Tirana didn’t have really any “old towns” to speak of due to Communism, Berat is exactly what you’re thinking of when it comes to old European villages.

Having spent a lot of time in Albania, I think Berat is probably the most impressive traditional town in the country. Known as the city of 1000 windows, this old town was heavily influenced by the Ottoman empire and you can see the same architectural prowess as you do in certain parts of Turkey.

Berat Tirana

Picturesque stone houses with dark mahogany stucco roofs are built along the hillside. Don’t forget the fortress at the top of said hill just to add perspective. The town is incredibly photogenic and you will get some of your best pictures of the country here.

Berat Albania

For the best views, visit the new bridge and take the photo head on. In addition, the views from the main town square that is adorned with numerous cafes is amazing.

Last but not least, if you just have one night here like I did, make sure to absolutely go eat dinner at Homemade food Lili located right in the old town. The owner is incredibly energetic and I’ve never seen a happier soul. Coupled with some of the best Albanian food you’ll find and this is a must visit.

Where I stayed in Berat

Guesthouse Arben Elezi

There are countless places to stay in Berat and all for very affordable prices. I stayed at Guesthouse Arben Elezi which had comfortable rooms and modern finishings. However, the best part of this guesthouse was its rooftop terrace with dead on views of Berat’s old town. Having breakfast here with these views was an absolute treat.

Himare and the Albanian Riviera

After one night in Berat, I drove south towards the Albanian coast to enjoy beaches and sea. The Adriatic coastline of Albania is totally underrated in my opinion. It combines dramatic mountain peaks with that beautiful Ionian sea that you can’t get enough of. Driving down the coast reminded me of Crete in some parts, mixed in with Kefalonia , Greece at others. It is spectacular and not to be missed!

There is a steep ascent up the mountains but as it dips down to sea level, the views of the mountains towering over the sea is breathtaking.

Albania road trip

There are many towns and destinations to visit on the coast. The main towns of interest are:

  • Butrint National Park

There are many smaller villages that are also beautiful but these are the main ones. It is not so big of an area to cover so I would recommend to just choose a town and base yourself there for a few nights.

Ksamil Greek food ocean

After reading a lot of blogs, I settled on Himare which is mostly in the middle of the southern coast and is known to be a bit more laid back but with beautiful views. Dhermi is next door but seemed to be a place that specialized in high end accommodations which wasn’t what I was after. Sarande in the very south is a bigger beach town that had a very Southern California OC vibe (as well as Vlore). In the end, I was very happy with my decision of staying in Himare.

Drop in at the Appollonia Ruins

Appollonia Albania

On the way from Berat to Himare, you’ll pass through the old Greek ruins at Appollonia. Here you’ll find a small acropolis type of building with breathtaking views of the nearby valleys. There is a small entrance fee here but it is a nice little stop along the way to the coast.

Visit Gjipe Beach

All the Albanians I met told me a visit to Gjipe Beach was a must. It’s one of the nicest beaches in the coast and I would have to agree. Located between Dhermi and Himare, this beach is a bit of a mission to get to. It involves driving down a small road (it is paved at least), parking your car, and walking 20 minutes down rocky roads to the beach.

Gjipe Beach Albania

It is not difficult by any means but just keep in mind you will want to pack lots of water for this trip. In the end, the beach is absolutely beautiful and has all the qualities of an Ionian sea beach you can expect.

Gjipe Beach Albania

Having visited in late April, I was able to enjoy beautiful weather (25C+) and zero crowds. However, in the summer months, expect this beach (and every other one) to get super packed.

Visit Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park is located south of Sarande and is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to perhaps the least crowded Greek and Roman ruins you’ll find.

Butrint National Park Albania

The Amphitheatre here was completely empty and I was able to just chill here by myself for quite some time. There is also a very nicely preserved fortress with views of the surrounding bay.

After getting your history in, make sure to have lunch in Ksamil. Guvat Bar and Restaurant is located right on the beach with stunning views of the turquoise water below. As this region is so close to Greece, expect delicious Greek food which is my favorite European cuisine.

Staying at Beleri House

Beleri House in Himare was an amazing option to stay! It was right in front of the beach and had great ocean views. The town of Himare is much more chilled and a great place to base yourself to explore the nearby areas.

Himare Albania

Gjirokaster

Gjirokaster

After a very relaxing few days in Himare soaking up the sun and sea, it was time to continue onwards to Gjirokaster, which is another beautiful medieval mountain town in the heartland of Albania. The drive from Himare to Gjirokaster is quite scenic and just over two hours.

Blue Eye of Sarande

blue eye of sarande albania

Along the way, stop at the Blue Eye of Sarande which is a natural pool with ultra clear water coming from depths of 50 meters below. It’s possible to swim in these waters and it is a popular tourist attraction.

Gjiroskaster Town

Gjirokaster Albania

Upon arrive in Gjirokaster, you will be undoubtedly taken aback by the natural beauty of the town. Like Berat, there is an old town and a new town but of course, you’ll want to stay the night in the old part of the village on the hills.

Gjirokaster Albania

Gjirokaster is known as the stone city and is another beautiful display of Ottoman city planning. It is similar but also not that similar to Berat, even though both towns share the same history. Both towns are incredibly beautiful and I’d say Gjirokaster is as beautiful as Berat. Both towns are absolutely worth visiting.

Gjirokaster Albania

Gjirokaster feels a bit more touristy than Berat as its main streets are filled with shops that sell souvenirs and restaurants. However, visiting in late April during COVID meant neither town felt touristy whatsoever.

Where I stayed – Stone Rooms

I found a hotel called the Stone Rooms at the top of Gjirokaster with complete panoramic views of the city for 20 euros a night. It was a bit of a mission to get here but the views were totally worth it.

Albania Landscape

After a night in Gjirokaster, it is time to make the drive into North Macedonia. This is a long drive day (almost six hours) as you will mostly drive through small mountainous roads. This drive is annoying and full of questionable roads but the scenery is well worth it. The mountain area around the Greece border is especially stunning.

Lake Ohrid Macedonia

Along the way, you can break up the drive by stopping in Korce for lunch before crossing the border into North Macedonia. Before crossing the border, you’ll need to buy a Macedonian Green pass for your car which is essentially insurance. The cost of this is 40 euros.

After crossing the border, Lake Ohrid is another 45 minutes drive. At this point, you will already be on the lake and it is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the largest lakes in the Balkans and its mountains background reminds me of visiting Lake Como in Italy or Kotor in Montenegro.

What to do in Lake Ohrid

Lake Ohrid Macedonia

Lake Ohrid is similar to Lake Como in that there are multiple towns surrounding the lake. However, I found that only one was historic and picturesque and that was of the town of Ohrid. People don’t talk much about the other towns so I think it’s safe to base yourself entirely in Ohrid.

Staying in the old town of Ohrid is the way to go as you will be close to all the sights. The main things to see here are the fortress at the top of the town and numerous Orthodox churches. The fortress is a short walk and can be done in a few minutes.

Lake Ohrid Macedonia

Of the churches, the most famous and most picturesque is without a doubt St John’s Church right on the tip of the peninsula. From here, you have panoramic views of Lake Ohrid and this beautiful Orthodox church perched by itself overlooking the lake.

Aside from this, you can take a catamaran around the lake as a tour. Simply walk along the main waterfront and there are plenty of people selling tours from their boats.

Simply, there is just time here to relax and soak up the beautiful lake views. I definitely could have stayed in Ohrid for a few more days.

Lake Ohrid Macedonia

Stay at Villa Ohrid

There are so many amazing guesthouses in Lake Ohrid so your options are endless. I wanted a view of the town and of the lake so I ended up choosing to stay at Villa Ohrid . It did not disappoint because I had a balcony that was front and center viewing the lake. Waking up to this view every morning was divine.

After a wonderful few days in Lake Ohrid, it was time to continue the journey onward to the capital of North Macedonia.

Alexander the Great statue Skopje

The drive is quite scenic with the mountain views and terrace farms. There isn’t a whole lot to see besides the Ottoman era mosque in Tetove which has some of the most stunning murals I’ve seen on a Mosque.

This area in the west of Macedonia is mostly Albanian which I learned shortly after that much of the population in North Macedonia is Albanian, similar to how much of Southern Albania’s population consider themselves Greek.

Skopje Macedonia old bridge

Skopje is a beautiful town and was definitely the most beautiful capital of the three countries in my opinion (Tirana, Skopje, and Pristina). The town has a fantastic vibe and energy which I enjoyed.

Walking tour of Skopje

The free walking tour of Skopje is a great way to see all the sights of the city. There is one company that does these and they meet in the main Square next to the Alexander the Great statue. My guide was great as he explained so much about the city I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

For starters, Macedonia is a former Yugoslavian country and therefore have a Slavic language. However, I never knew that Greece  also has a Macedonia part which is the region in the very north with Thessaloniki as its capital. In Ancient times, “Macedonia” encompassed what is now modern day North Macedonia and “South Macedonia” which is in Greece. However, Slavs moved in during the 5th century AD and staked out their land.

Skopje old district

Up until 2018, the country of “Macedonia” was what is now North Macedonia. However, as North Macedonia wants to join the EU, they needed to change their name because their neighbors Greece was not happy with their claim to all of the “Macedonia” name. North Macedonia was therefore created and adopted only a few years ago. Most people were not happy about the name change and I can’t blame them!

Nevertheless, the walking tour is great as it explores the new part of the town with more European and Communist style buildings as well as the old part of town just over the old Bridge. This area was thriving in Ottoman times and nowadays is home to a Bazaar style neighborhood with shops and restaurants closely packed. It is in fact, the second largest Bazaar style neighborhood after Istanbul !

Explore the Bohemian Neighborhood

I stayed in the Bohemian neighborhood that is just 15 minutes away from the city center. I was recommended this area as it was where all the cool bars and restaurants are. If you want a more neighborhood vibe, then this is definitely where you’ll want to stay.

Make sure to visit the cocktail bars of Casa and the restaurants on the main strip.

Pristina Kosovo

After Skopje, it is a quick 1.5 hours north to the capital of Kosovo. The drive is largely uneventful and the border was quite easy. The first thing I noticed upon entering Kosovo was how amazing the roads were. It was a proper freeway that you’d find in the best roads of Germany or the United States. By far the best roads of the trip so far.

Pristina was also much different than my expectations. Having gone through a heinous war only 25 years ago, I just figured the city would still be recovering from the effects of that. As Kosovo consists largely of Albanian people, I figured the city would be more grungy like Tirana.

Pristina Kosovo

However, I was mistaken. The city feels much more built up and modern than I figured. It was surprisingly clean and more orderly than other Balkan capitals, especially when compared to Tirana.

Pristina Kosovo

I only stayed here for a day so I didn’t get to explore it in detail but it also felt like there was slightly less character than the hip neighborhood of Blloku in Tirana for example or the remnants of its old town in comparison to Skopje.

I also took the free walking tour in Pristina which I can recommend. There really aren’t a whole lot of “must see” sights in Pristina as much of it was destroyed and most of the city is quite new.

However, what interested me in Pristina was not its medieval history but rather its modern history. I learned quite a great deal talking to my guide about the Kosovo war. Since it was so recent, anyone over the age of 30 remembers in great detail exactly what went down in the late 90s.  He recounted how life was in those dark times which really put it in perspective, similar to my tour guide in Kiev talking about the revolution in 2014.

Cocktails at Boho

Kosovars love to party hard and you’ll find no shortage of nightlife in Pristina. People are out and about in full force all throughout the night in the main square as well as the Fehmi Agani street. As well, the food in Kosovo was the best I had on the trip. If you are looking for delicious grilled meats and crispy burek, you’ll get the best of both in Kosovo!

Peje and Prizren

The next stay starts early in the morning with a departure of Pristina to the Rugova Valley in the west of the country. I was recommended this valley by various blogs I met. It’s about 1.5 hours to the Rugova Valley mountains just west of the town of Peje.

Rugova Mountains in Kosovo

The mountains here are beautiful. There is ample hiking to be done here as well as zip-lining. However, in this itinerary will be a visit to the Valbona and Theth mountain ranges in Albania. If you’re visiting Kosovo only, then definitely make it out to this part of the country. However, if you are going to Valbona, I would give Peje and Ragova a skip even if it is just for a half day. Instead, focus your energy on Prizren.

Prizren Town

Prizren Kosovo

Prizren is the old and traditional town of Kosovo. It was the capital during olden times before moving to Pristina. It’s a rather large town but with a small and historic old town where you will likely spend most of your time in.

Prizren Kosovo

The old town is picturesque and features a big mosque and an old Ottoman bridge that really reminds me of the Stari Most in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a great place to take photos especially around sunset.

As for the old town, there really isn’t much to explore. It is quite tiny and you can walk from one end to the other in five minutes.

The streets are lined with bars, restaurants, and shisha lounges. At night, it turns into a huge party as it seems like the whole town descends into it. Mixed with tourists, and you are assured a big night out every night.

Hike to the fortress of Prizren

Sitting atop the hill overlooking Prizren town is the old fortress. It’s a quick 15 minute hike from the old town and is worth it for the panoramic views over the town. The fortress itself is very impressive. Built during Byzantine times, it was further developed during the Serbian and Ottoman empires. There is no entrance fee.

Prizren Fortress

Along the way, you’ll pass through an old Serbian Orthodox church perched up on the hilltop overlooking the town. It’s an unfinished church which I’m sure was started sometime during the Yugoslavian times. I’m sure there is no shortage of debates about what to do with it among the Kosovars.

What to eat in Prizren

There are tons of restaurants in Prizren including countless Qebaptores (grill houses), Furra (bakeries), and bars. The best restaurant in town is without a doubt the restaurant at the Tiffany hotel. This restaurant serves very traditional oven baked Albanian dishes that I did not find anywhere else during my trip. Make sure to try the Elbasan lamb!

Hotel Tiffany Prizren

Prices in Kosovo are amount the cheapest I’ve ever seen in Europe. So cheap that I didn’t even bother with credit cards because it felt silly to pay a few euros with a credit card. An espresso at the trendy Gatsby bar next to the Bridge is €0.50 euros and a lunch of Qebapa is €2-3 euros.

Valbona and Theth

Valbona Albania

After Prizren, Kosovo is pretty much done and it is time to go back to Albania. This next part is confusing and can easily take up an entire post to explain. I will try to summarize it as easily as possible.

One of the most stunning and must do things in Albania in my opinion is to visit the Accursed mountains which is Albania’s answer to the Italian Dolomites .

Valbona to Theth Hike

Valbona Albania

It is absolutely stunning in its beauty and the dramatic rocky peaks will convert any lowland lower. One of the most popular things to do in Albania is to make the Valbona to Theth hike. Valbona and Theth are two national parks located next to each other in Albania’s north. Valbona to the East and Theth to the west. They are  only connected by foot meaning there are no roads connecting these two national parks. Therefore, many travelers make the trek by foot and it’s one of the most epic hikes you can do.

Valbona Albania

However, this is only possible in the summer months as snow often blocks the way. This 6-7 hour hike can only be done between the months of May-September. I visited in early May and sadly, the pass was closed. Therefore, I went straight to Valbona from Kosovo instead of doing the typical “route” for this trip.

If you are visiting and the pass is indeed open (just message one of the guesthouses in Valbona to know about the conditions), then this is the itinerary you will follow:

  • Start in Shkoder (overnight)
  • In the morning, your guesthouse or hotel will arrange a transport to the Koman Lake Ferry, which is in itself extremely epic (more details on this shortly)
  • Take the two hour ferry ride from Koman to Fierza
  • From Fierza, take another transport to your guesthouse in Valbona where you will spend the night
  • The next day, make the 6-8 hour hike from Valbona to Theth, spend the night at your guesthouse in Theth
  • The following day, take a transport to Shkoder

For the above itinerary, you can leave your rental car in Shkoder for the 3 days no problem. You can’t take the car with you on this trip because there is no way to get back to Valbona after you finish your hike unless you want to walk back! Therefore, it’s much easier to just do this trip without your rental car.

Valbona National Park

Since I couldn’t do the above hike, I decided to just spend some time in Valbona without going to Theth. While the pass was closed, there are still hikes to be done without much issue. The  Maja e  Rosni  hike is the one that many people do. It’s 2600m to the top and takes about 7 hours round trip. However, it’s only about 1600m to get to the first viewpoint which affords you panoramic views of the valley.

Valbona Albania

This is what I ended up doing and it was incredibly beautiful. The views stretch for many kilometers down the valley as you get the same jagged peaks that I saw in the Dolomites. It’s truly breathtaking here.

Staying at Margjeka Hotel

Views from Margjeka Valbona

The most popular guesthouse that I read about was Margjeka. It’s located at the very end of the road in Valbona and it is located on a hill which gives it views of every mountain surrounding it. The rooms are comfortable and the food was delicious. Most importantly, waking up to these views was something special.

I would highly recommend staying here!

Koman Lake Ferry

koman Lake ferry

Last but not least, the Koman lake ferry was the cherry on top of the cake of an amazing South Balkans itinerary. It might not sound fancy (and the ferry boat certainly isn’t) but this ferry ride between Koman and Fierza is one of the most spectacular things I did.

koman Lake ferry

Seriously, you cannot leave Albania without at least going on this ferry ride.

Picture towering Norwegian style Fjords on all sides of you as you sail across a turquoise river. It’s something special and no pictures do it justice!

koman Lake ferry

From Valbona, it’s a 1.5 hour drive to the port town of Fierza. There is nothing here really except some restaurants and this ferry. The ferry runs once a day between Koman and Fierza (round trip). The cost is only €6 per person and about €40 for a car.

koman Lake ferry

The ferry ride is only two hours but you’ll wish it lasts longer. After arriving in Koman, it’s an easy drive back to Shkoder or if you need to go home via Tirana.

koman Lake ferry

From here, I thought about driving to Theth (since I couldn’t hike there) to see the contrast with Valbona. However, in the end, I didn’t want to deal with it as the roads to Theth are very rough for the last 15 km. It’s not feasible without a 4×4 and I didn’t want to risk it. In the end, I decided to go to Montenegro next door to get back to the sea!

I wrote about the Lake Koman ferry ride in detail so make sure to read that if you are considering this trip!

Great Post Johnny! I am travelling to albania, macedonia, Bosnia and Montenegro. I would like to ask you if could recomend a car agency for the rental or where did you do yours? Thank you for sharing the information with us 🙂

Hi there, I rented my car with my Airbnb host and his company is called Easy Drive Albania. Highly recommend them!

I love this post! I am planning a trip for Aug/Sept and trying to figure out my plan. I have read various things about driving into N Macedonia.. but it wasn’t an issue for you from Albania? Just the pass you mention above? Also – I am probably a solo female traveler.. do you think this would be safe for me? Last Question – did you have a phone you were able to use?

Hi Vanessa! Yes it is definitely not a problem to drive from Albania to n. Macedonia. Just make sure to ask the car rental before hand and confirm it. As for safety, yes it is very safe all over the balkans. I got Sim cards in Albania for 4g and then used 2g roaming on my t-mobile (from usa) for the other countries. Hope that helps!

North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Serbia in 11 days

You’ll be surprised by the number of experiences and beautiful sights packed in this relatively short itinerary. From UNESCO World Heritage sites such as The Old Bridge in Mostar, Kotor and Perast area in Montenegro, Gračanica Monastery in Kosovo, Ohrid Lake in North Macedonia, to the Ottoman heritage of Bosnia and bustling streets of Belgrade with its unique mix of Roman, Serbian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman influences, this tour is melting pot of different sights, cultures, traditions, and tastes. Pick your dates, and let us create an experience you’ll remember.

ITINERARY  11 days / 10 nights

Arrive at Skopje International Airport.

Our guide will meet you in the arrival hall with your name on the signboard. He will do the following: help you with your money exchange, give you essential information about Skopje, help you with your check-in, explain to you the location of your accommodation and advise you how to reach the main sights, and give you an overview of current happenings in the city.

In case your flight is delayed, there is no reason to worry. We will monitor your flight, and our guide will meet you accordingly. There are no additional charges for flight delays. After a short ride of 20 minutes, you’ll be in the city’s center. Check in at the hotel, and take the rest of the day to get more familiar with Skopje, walk around, or follow your guide’s recommendation for dinner.

Overnight: Sofia

After breakfast, we’ll head for Kosovo. We’ll spend a full day exploring the natural and cultural beauties of the area.

Before we reach Pristina, we’ll stop at the marvelous medieval UNESCO-protected Gračanica monastery, completed in 1321 by the Serbian king Milutin. The monastery, which is set on large, grassy grounds, is one of the most attractive in Kosovo. Here, you will hear the story about the history of the monastery and the area, about Orthodox Christianity, and you’ll get a chance to admire the breathtaking interior, with extraordinary frescoes covering the walls up to the top of the highest tower.

After this serene experience, we will continue to Pristina, only 20 minutes away. We’ll immediately start with the sightseeing. We’ll check the sights such as the National University Library of Kosovo, open-air archeological park, Carshi Mosque, Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque, Great Hammam, etc. You’ll have some free time to explore the city on your own or perhaps grab a bite before we proceed to Prizren.

Set on the slopes of Šar mountain and by the banks of the Bistrica River, Prizren is widely regarded as the most beautiful city in Kosovo. Its rich cultural heritage represents a blend of different cultural influences, including Turkish, Serbian, and Albanian. Here, you will see the Sinan Pasha Mosque, Prizren Fortress, and Prizren Old Town, with various souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes.

After some free time, we’ll head back to Skopje, where we will arrive in the evening.

Overnight: Skopje

After breakfast, we’ll start with the walking tour. Skopje, a city with 2 thousand years of history, the capital of Northern Macedonia, is the meeting point of many nations and cultures in the heart of the Balkans. It attracts tourists with a fortress, cultural and historical monuments, archaeological sites, and most of all, very warm, hospital, and welcoming citizens. During our tour, we will walk through the narrow Streets of Old Bazaar, the biggest market in the Balkans; we’ll check the 1500 years old fortress Kale, the monastery St. Pantaleon with the fresco” Lamentation of Christ,” the Islamic monuments Sultan Murat’s- Hjunkar Mosque, the Daut Pasha’s bath, and the birthplace of Mother Teresa. After the walking tour, we will continue our trip toward Ohrid Lake.

En route, we will stop at the famous  Matka Canyon  and enjoy a boat ride through the beautiful gorge. After that, you will have some free time for lunch before we proceed to Ohrid.

Arrive at Ohrid in the evening and check in at the hotel. Free time.

Overnight: Ohrid

Nicknamed “The Jerusalem of the Balkans,” Ohrid was once the center of Slavic culture and religion. The natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

We will walk through Ohrid’s cobbled Old Town and up to the hilltop Church of St John at Kaneo to get the most incredible view over the lake, mountains, and Galiĉica National Park. We’ll check sights such as The Church of St. Sophia, the Roman amphitheater, and the Samuel Fortress.

After a short ride of 30 minutes, it’s time to enter one of the perhaps most mysterious and yet-to-be-discovered countries of The Balkans – Albania. The country’s geographical position, political history, and unique language made Albania one of Europe’s least visited countries, which has rapidly changed in the past 10 years.

On our way to Tirana, we’ll make a short stop at Elbasan, the third-largest city in the country, right in the middle of Albania. We’ll check the Castle of Elbasan, the King’s Mosque, St Mary Orthodox Church, and the Clock Tower.

Check-in at the hotel. Enjoy your free afternoon discovering Tirana on your own. Perhaps visit the Bunk’Art 1, a former anti-nuclear bunker now turned into a very interesting historical and art center, or check out the Dajti Cable Car and enjoy the breathtaking city views.

Breakfast and off we go, to explore this vibrant city, famous for its non-stop energy and motion. During our tour, we’ll see the Mosque of Et’hem Bey and the 35 m high Kulla e Sahatit or the Watch Tower.

Moreover, we will visit the famous Mosaic uncovered on the floor of an old Roman lodge. Its center configures the walls of the castle of the Roman emperor Justinian (A.D. 520). The monumental Tomb of Kaplan Pasha and the Ura e Tabakëve (a bridge constructed at the beginning of the 19th century, located on Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard) are a few other interesting places we will visit.

After a short refreshment, it’s time to leave Albania behind us and start revealing another not-so-often-visited Balkan country – Montenegro. On our way, we will drive through the National Park and pass by Southern Europe’s largest lake– Skadar.

Our first stop will be the charming town of Shkoder. Even before we enter the Old Town, we’ll be impressed by the mighty former Venetian fortress – Rozafa, the largest one in Albania. We’ll check Shkoder’s main sights, including Shkodra Cathedral and Ebu Bekr Mosque. After a short refreshment, we’ll hit the road and drive along the beautiful Adriatic coast until we reach Budva – the tourist capital of Montenegro. Check-in at the hotel. Free time. Use this evening to walk by the sea or explore Budva’s Old Town.

Overnight: Budva

After breakfast, we’ll leave Budva behind us and ride towards the stunning Bay of Kotor, the longest and deepest fjord in Southern Europe. Our first stop will be the charming coastal town of Perast, one of the most beautiful towns on the Adriatic Sea, with only 300 residents. We will walk along the Perast promenade and admire the beautiful baroque palaces of noble families.

Following, we will take a short boat ride to the 15th century “Our Lady of the Rocks” Church perched on an islet in the bay. Once there, we will visit the Roman Catholic Church, which has an interesting interior.

The next stop is Kotor, where we will have a guided walking tour. This old Mediterranean town, surrounded by formidable city walls, was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its medieval architecture and other cultural monuments are why UNESCO included the city on the list of “World Natural and Historical Heritage Sites.” We’ll check out the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, Maritime Museum, numerous Palaces, and Old Square and get to feel the atmosphere of this unique medieval town. Here, we will have a lunch break.

Later on, we will proceed to Bosnia and Herzegovina. We’ll end the day in Trebinje, a charming and picturesque little town on the banks of the Trebišnjica River, with a laid-back atmosphere and an interesting mix of Mediterranean, Central European, and Ottoman influences. You can use the evening to stroll around small streets or have a nice dinner.

Overnight: Trebinje

After breakfast, our trip continues to Blagaj (a site on the UNESCO Tentative List), an old town from the first half of the 16th century and a beautiful representation of Ottoman architecture. Blagaj was the crib of Islam of today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the short tour, enjoy the view of the monastery in a fairy-tale environment beneath the cliffs on the shores of the emerald-green river Buna.

Our next stop will be Mostar, a medieval town in northern Herzegovina and one of the Balkan’s top ten sights. With cobblestoned streets, old stone buildings, and its beautiful bridge spanning the picturesque Neretva River, it attracts thousands of visitors.

We will walk through its narrow streets to soak up the atmosphere and learn more about the history of this magnificent place. We will cross the

reconstructed Old Bridge, a staunch symbol of freedom on the Neretva River, and a UNESCO-protected landmark. If we are lucky, we may even witness some brave divers jumping from the bridge, following a tradition that lasts for a couple of centuries in Mostar.

We will proceed to Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, the Crooked Bridge, and the Old Town, or Čaršija as locals call it.

You will have some free time in Mostar for lunch on the banks of the Neretva River, with an amazing bridge view.

We’ll end the day in Sarajevo, a beautiful city with a complicated history.

After check-in, enjoy a free afternoon in Sarajevo and visit some of the most famous restaurants in the city, offering the famous “ćevapčići,” a traditional Bosnian dish, a small rolled patty of ground beef meat.

Overnight: Sarajevo

Breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll start exploring the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina and one of Europe’s most historically rich cities.

We’ll start from the picturesque Turkish Bazaar (Bascarsija), an old trading place with artisan workshops. We’ll check many examples of splendid Ottoman architecture around the city center. The city is truly a “living history museum” where mosques built by the Ottomans sit alongside buildings created by the Austro-Hungarians and the Orthodox Churches. We’ll see the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, the most prominent Islamic structure in the country, one of the world’s finest examples of Ottoman architecture. We’ll drive past the now-neglected stadium from the 1984 Winter Olympic Games and the Gavrilo Princip Museum. On our walk, look for the poignant Sarajevo Roses, flower-shaped memorials in the pavement filled with red cement, one of the few reminders left of the war.

After finishing the Sarajevo tour, we will proceed towards a town called Višegrad,  where we will see the famous Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, a UNESCO site and the most beautiful example of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. Also, we’ll have a lunch stop in Stone Town, another interesting project made by Emir Kusturica. After a lunch break, we’ll proceed toward Zlatibor.

We will finish our day in Serbia, in the tourist center of Zlatibor mountain. The region of Zlatibor is famous for its healthy air, folk architecture, native culture and traditions, wealthy and diverse ethnic heritage, widely-renowned culinary specialties, healthy food, and balmy climate. After the check-in and dinner, you’ll have free time to enjoy and relax.

Overnight: Zlatibor

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the road toward Western Serbia, known for its wild and untouched nature, tasty cuisine, and friendly and hospitable people.

Our first stop is the famous Sargan Eight railroad. A unique narrow-gauge railway nowadays serves only for amusement. We will pass and stop at several viewpoints during our ride, from which one can see fabulous views over Mokra Gora. Authentic cars with wooden seats, wood-burning stoves, and characteristic rattling sounds will take us back in time.

The next stop is Wooden City. The famous director Emir Kusturica (two times Palme d’Or in Cannes winner) decided to build it during the shooting of his film “Life is a Miracle.” He chose to convey ruined wooden chalets from the mountain’s slopes, restore them, and form a new settlement. Here, we will have a lunch break.

The next sight on our way is one of the most famous attractions in Serbia, “The House on Drina River”, an isolated house made of logs on a river stone. After a photo stop and refreshments, we will continue our trip to Belgrade.

After check-in, use this afternoon to say farewell to Belgrade, walk around, or go for dinner following your guide’s recommendation.

Overnight: Belgrade

Breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll start with our Belgrade sightseeing tour. Today we will show you almost all the most important sights in the city.

We’ll start at the daunting Belgrade Fortress, dramatically perched above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. We’ll check the Victor Monument, Monument of Gratitude to France, Zindan Gate, The Chapel of Saint Petka, Clock Gate, and The Clock Tower.

Once we finish with the fortress, we will start our panoramic ride through New Belgrade – Belgrade’s largest municipality, with impressive modern architecture. Here, we will see some remarkable buildings such as the Ex-Central Committee of the Communist Party, Federal Executive Council, also known as the Palace of Federation, Genex Tower or Western Gate of Belgrade, Sava Center, Belgrade Arena, and many more.

After New Belgrade, we’ll reach Zemun, the northern area of Belgrade, which is characteristic of its Central European appearance, charming quarters, cobblestone streets, and fish restaurants on the Danube River banks. Its curvy cobblestone streets and small houses will give you the impression that Zemun is a melting pot of Mediterranean and Middle European cultures.

After Zemun, we’ll drive through Dedinje, Belgrade’s most luxurious residential area, before we reach the imposing Saint Sava Temple, one of the world’s largest Orthodox churches.

After the sightseeing tour, spend this afternoon on your own. Maybe check out Nikola Tesla’s Museum or the National Museum, or wander around the central streets.

In the evening, visit the Old Bohemian Quarter of Skadarlija, frequently compared to Montmartre in Paris, both in appearance and artistic atmosphere. It’s a perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with traditional Serbian cuisine and the famous Belgrade nightlife. (Optional = 30€ per person)

Breakfast. Free time until your flight. Transfer to the airport. End of services. Have a safe flight!

If you depart from Belgrade a few days after the tour ends, you can book additional nights with us, at the same hotel,

And of course, we’ll gladly assist you if you want to extend your European adventure and continue to Budapest, Zagreb, Sofia or somewhere else.

Very exiting trip, we visited many beautiful places. End of May / beginning of June is the perfect time, because it's not so hot and not so full yet. However, I found the group to big (42 people), we spent quite some time on administrative tasks like check-in and out, toilet breaks, etc.

Excellent! Very well organised, extremely interesting and informative. The most famous ancient sites in Greece mixed with lots of cultural activities and a variety of geographical areas. The tour was fantastic! The Balkans are beautiful, the people are warm and welcoming, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of travel companions. Cheers to Boyan, our tour director, and Nico, our driver. They’re lovely people and TravelTalk is fortunate to have them!

Balkan Explorer Tour

Balkan Explorer

A well-planned, well-executed trip! I very much enjoyed the entire experience. At first, when it was announced to our group of 38 that we would be rotating seats on a daily basis, I was a bit skeptical. However, I soon realized that it was actually a very good idea, as everyone got their turn having the front seat, etc. and nobody could fuss over who sat where. Our guide, Carly, was very experienced with group travel, very knowledgeable, and a pleasure to have as a guide. Our accommodations were great, the meals were very good, and we saw some fabulous sites during the trip. I really liked the 2-night stays in both Dubrovnik and Budapest, with enough free time to go to the beach in Croatia and the baths in Hungary! I would travel with Expat Explorer again in a heartbeat!

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

Western Balkans Uncovered Tour

Western Balkans Uncovered

I did not know what to expect and was pleased to find it all very interesting and different from our North American standards. The kindness of the people toward tourists was wonderful to experience especially given the difficult history all of the countries visited had gone through. Food and drink were very good.

Dubrovnik to Athens Tour

Dubrovnik to Athens

Tour leader Dora was awesome. Very adaptable. Provided options on transport to save time & inconvenience. Gave us information on each place visited but didn't overload us like school children. Provided suggestions on places to visit, restaurants, etc during free time. Hotels & guest houses all very good. Would have liked to stay 2 nights in Berat instead of 1. That is our 2nd Intrepid tour, will definitely keep recommending to friends. Linda Arlaud & Rodney Barnes

Balkan Adventure (14 Days) Tour

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)

An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria Tour

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria

Good trip to get a feel for the region and an appreciation for the uniqueness of each of the nations you visit. Hotels were very good for the most part. Only one looked like a carryover from the bad old days. Breakfasts and dinners were typically quite good Places visited were very good. Dubrovnik was not to be missed. Mountain top monastery in Greece was truly spectacular. Albania was surprisingly modern in the city center of the capital Needed an additional day in Sarajevo. With the assassination, the Olympics and the siege of the 90's, there is too much history to only have a single day there. Biggest problem was the amount of time in transit on the bus compared to the time seeing the sights we drove to. Interesting concept in the way the company recombines groups at each point to customize the experience desired by each of the travelers. Does mean that you may be travelling with totally new companions and guides each couple of days. Our guide for most of the time was Victor. Relatively young and new to the business. Fluent in Bulgarian, Spanish and English. Struck a nice balance in furnishing information about the places we visited without being over-bearing with it. Had the ability to keep things organized and get what we needed at various points. Street smart and I'm sure will get better with his knowledge of the region as time goes on. I'd bet he'll be really good at this down the road.

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP Tour

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP

I have just completed the 7 countries in 14 days tour with Victor Tours. There was a great mix of being shown the important tourist spots and giving you some free time to explore for yourself. The tour guide Theodor was a breath of fresh air. He was inciteful, helpful and knowledgeable during the tour. He answered all questions honestly, especially around some sensitive subjects. We had breakfast at all the hotels that was substantial. The accommodation, because we moved around ranged from tremendous to very good. Not one hotel was lacking. It has given me an improved understanding and knowledge of the area, their problems both past and present. The tour gives you a great start on all the 7 countries and if you want to explore them more you then have a starting point. My favorite countries were Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia, which I will be exploring further. Alexander and his team, from Victor Tours was tremendous in his assistance both before the tour and during it. There were no 'hick ups' at all. I would recommend Victor Tours and this particular tour to anyone who want to travel to these countries. Thanks again Alexander and Theodor for the great memories.

Dubrovnik to Athens: Beachfronts & Fortresses Tour

Dubrovnik to Athens: Beachfronts & Fortresses

We were a small group of 7 people, which was great. Our Tour Guide Alice was amazing, totally amiable, knowledgeable and fun. Everytime we wanted to change the trip activities she accommodated our wishes. I most enjoyed the part of the trip in Montenegro, a beautiful country. The overall trip is a well-balanced combination of experiencing nature, cities, culture and party-opportunities.

Balkan Dreams Tour

Balkan Dreams

Overall the tour was good but very fast paced and quite often as is the way of Europomundo the Hotels were usually quite a way out of the main centres which meant very little chance to try local restaurants I would call these tours a brief taste of the Balkans. Hotels were good tourist class places. Like Accor style without the extra benefits Meals were mostly good. again typical tourist hotel style meals or buffet breakfast were very good with lots of variety As meals are mostly provided in the Hotels you are then wasting money by paying to go to a local restaurant You do see a lot of places and spend a few hrs in each place but no time for museums unless on the itinerary which they stick to. Europomondo tour company is well know for its tailored hop on hop offs so you can join them pretty much anywhere along the route Also bear in mind it is a Spanish company so all tours are bilingual and English is also spoken but firstly if you are only speaking English you have to wait for the Spanish info to be spoken then it is in English Buses are usually full say 40-45 people is pretty standard. I personally will not be using this company again am over being so rushed with late city arrivals and early starts for sure not a relaxing holiday BUT I did see a lot and coming from Australia it is not easy to revisit these places. I have done 2 separate but probably 5 individual tours with them 3 in one area ( Spain Morocco Portugal) and 2 in another area Balkans and the old Yugoslavian countries. I admire their logistics of pulling it all together but the individuality is lost. The drivers and guides are fantastic a big heads up for Victor and Igor and their drivers felt very safe and their information was very good. Ok so my main criticism is too rushed accommodation too far out busses very big so a lot of people who you only meet briefly before a new lot come on board. Variety yes but bonding no. thanks

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia Hiking Tour Details

Overview for albania, kosovo and north macedonia hiking tour.

There’s never enough time to do all the travelling you want to do, but if you want to explore Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, this 11-day hiking tour will show you the highlights (and you can always return another time!).

Land in Tirana, Albania, to meet your hiking group and get acquainted with this multifaceted country. You’ll notice influences from a myriad of occupations from the Ottoman Empire to the more recent communist regime. For the first 3 days of the itinerary, you’ll be exploring Albania’s trails that lead to jagged peaks and through the mountains commonly referred to as the Albanian Alps or the Accursed Mountains. Dip into Montenegro for half a day to climb its highest peak and then cross the border back into Albania. In these areas, you’ll be hiking through alpine meadows and next to enormous jagged peaks, some of which may still be snow-capped.

Once you head into Kosovo, the adventure centres more around city tours and trails at lower elevations. Take a rest day to explore Prizren on your own, and have a locally-guided city tour in Pristina, the capital. Move into North Macedonia where your trail views will include more bodies of water as you walk around Lake Ohrid, and into Matka Canyon. When you visit the canyon, you’ll have an optional boat excursion to the deepest underwater cave in Europe. Wrap up the tour by discovering several North Macedonian villages, engaging with locals, and tasting traditional cuisine and drink.

Put your planning brain to rest and take this 11-day guided hiking tour through a few extraordinary Balkan countries.

Itinerary for Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia Hiking Tour

Arrival in tirana.

Welcome to Albania! You will meet your guide at the airport in Tirana and be transferred to the northern Albanian town of Shkodra. Take some time to stroll about this charming lakeside town. Some historical and cultural highlights include the fortress atop the city, mosques, museums, and relics of the Ottoman empire.

Hike in Maranaj Park

After fuelling up on a hearty Albanian breakfast, get a transfer to the village of Domen. Find the trailhead for today’s hike in Maranaj Park to summit a mountain of the same name, reaching 1,527 m / 5,010 ft that offers exceptional views of the surroundings. Green mountains and rocky terrain abound in this protected area. Take your time exploring the peak and snapping pictures. Descend to Domen from where your guide will take you to Theth for a night in a cozy guesthouse.

Explore the Albanian Alps

Enjoy breakfast at the guesthouse in Theth, then prepare for a climb towards Valbona Pass through the Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains. In winter, these mountains are covered with snow, but when the snow melts, they become one of the country’s most sensational hiking destination. A network of trails awaits your exploration in this area! After reaching Valbona Pass at 1,795 m / 5,889 ft, you’ll begin the descent and meet a driver for a transfer to Kukaj—in the middle of Valbona National Park surrounded by a few of Albania’s highest peaks—to spend the night in a guesthouse.

Summit Zla Kolata in Montenegro

Wake up in Albania and get ready for a big day: you’ll hike into neighbouring Montenegro and back. Today’s route includes a hike up to 2,030 m / 6,660 ft to stop for a packed lunch amid spectacular jagged peaks and epic views. You’ll head into trails among evergreen forests until hiking past the treeline and on to Montenegro’s highest peak of Zla Kolata at 2,534 m / 8,314 ft. The trail leads back to Albania after Bori Pass and descends through alpine meadows, finally reaching Cerem, a remote village where you’ll enjoy a well-earned rest. Get a transfer to Peja, Kosovo, after a long day of hiking to spend the night in a comfy hotel.

Walk the Peak of the Balkans Trail

After breakfast in Peja, head out to hike a section of the Peak of the Balkans Trail—a 192-km transnational route. Once you return, you’ll be transferred to the enchanting town of Prizren. Spend the evening aimlessly wandering and marveling at the town's mountain backdrop, and skyline varied with mosques, orthodox, and catholic church outlines.

Rest Day for Sightseeing in Prizren

Today, you get a rest from hiking and have a free day to explore Prizren at your leisure. Some of the highlights include the religious buildings, as mentioned above, and the architecture remaining from the Ottoman Empire. Prizren is renowned for its coffee culture—it will be easy to stay caffeinated as you explore the town.

City Tour of Pristina

After breakfast (and coffee) in Prizren, you’ll be transferred to Pristina, Kosovo’s capital. Meet a local guide for a thorough walking tour to learn about the intriguing history that constitutes the city. Enjoy some leisure time to discover the Bazars and shops, finding a few souvenirs. Meet the group for dinner at a local restaurant then get a transfer to Skopje, North Macedonia, to spend the night.

Mount Vodno and Matka Canyon

Enjoy breakfast in the capital of North Macedonia and set out for an active day. First, you will be transferred to Mount Vodno, where you’ll take the cable car up the mountain, which brings into view the religious structure atop the city: The Millennium Cross. The trail starts from here towards Matka Canyon, a spectacular area of huge rocks surrounding the Treska River. During the canyon excursion, you’ll have an option to visit Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe. Continue to Mavrovo, a village in the western part of the country, for the night.

Explore Carevec Peak and Nearby Villages

The group can decide whether it wants to hike to Carevec Peak or to get a short transfer to the viewpoint. Get an amazing view of the countryside and snap a few pictures before you start the hike towards the remote villages of Galicnik and Jance. On the way, you’ll be awarded views of Lake Debar, a humanmade lake constructed as part of a hydroelectric project in the area. From there, you’ll head further into the countryside, finally reaching the small mountainside village of Jance. Take a quick break here then receive a transfer to the lakeside town of Ohrid for the night.

Discover Velestovo, Konjsko, and Elsani

Epic lake views await today as you head to a few villages after breakfast. First, you’ll get transferred to Velestovo, a small mountainside village just south of Ohrid with incredible views of Lake Ohrid and the landscapes around. Continue to Lake Prespa to Konjsko village and enjoy the lake's serenity with a few nearby ruins to explore. The next village you’ll explore is Elsani, where you can catch more stunning lake views and some mountain breeze to cool off. Take as many photos as you can on your last full day of this tour. Back in Ohrid, you’ll have a final group dinner before getting some well-deserved rest.

Have a farewell breakfast with your new friends then pack up. Get a transfer to the airport when you’re ready to go!
