Allman Betts Family Revival Map Out Late 2023 Tour Dates

Today, Allman Betts Family Revival delivered the dates and locations for an impending run of shows, set to commence on Nov. 25 at The Factory in St. Louis. On the road, second-generation players Devon Allman and Duane Betts will bring together an all-star lineup of musicians to revive their fathers’ Allman Brothers Band material, which will range from hits to deep cuts.

During their 16-stop tour, Allman and Betts will welcome Anders Osborne, Luther and Cody Dickenson (North Mississippi Allstars), Jimmy Hall (Jeff Beck, Wet Willie), Jackie Greene, Larry McCray, Orbi Orbison, Tal Wilkenfeld and Ally Venable. In addition, at selection locations, guest artists include Sierra Hull and G. Love, with other names expected to be added in the future.

Following their initial night on stage, Allman Family Revival will go from St. Louis to Nashville, Ind.’s Brown County Music Center, for a gig on Nov. 26. After, they’re expected to perform in St. Charles, Ill., before a Nov. 29 performance at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, N.Y. Situated on the East Coast, they’ll play in Reading, Pa., next, with follow-ups slated for Boston and New York.

In early December, they’ll put on a show at The Paramount in Huntington, N.Y., then drop into the Southern region of the U.S., where they’ll stop in Virginia before a notable return to the Allman Brothers Band’s chosen home of Macon, Ga. After that, they’ll work through South Carolina and Florida. The band will take a stand at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 15 and will close out their tour with a final stop at ACL Live at The Moody Theater, in Austin, Texas, on Dec. 17.

The Allman Betts Family Revival got their footing with an initial one-off concert in 2017, slated to celebrate the life of Gregg Allman on what would have been the celebrated singer and songwriter’s 70th birthday. The show occurred at The Fillmore in San Francisco and started a special live music tradition. During the impending tour, they will also welcome back The Brotherhood of Light for the otherworldly visuals Allman Brothers fans experienced at the height of their career.

The Allman Betts Family Revival Announces 2023 Tour Dates

T he Allman Betts Family Revival will be embarking on a coast-to-coast tour at the end of this year. The Allman Brothers’ music lives on with the Allman Betts Family Revival tour

With their performance at the orpheum theatre on friday, the band carried on the seminal rock group’s legacy..

Devon Allman is pictured.

The enduring music of the Allman Brothers Band  lives on in the Allman Betts Family Revival tour, which made a stop at the Orpheum on Friday.  The tour is an annual event founded seven years ago by Devon Allman to celebrate the life of his father Gregg Allman,   one of the two brothers who gave their name to the illustrious ’70s band.  This year, the show was organized by Devon Allman and Duane Betts, son of band member Dickey Betts, to celebrate the music of both of their fathers.

Playing almost exclusively Allman Brothers music runs the risk of becoming a tribute show by a cover band, and perhaps the greatest success of the band was their ability to avoid this fate. While they played all the familiar hits such as “ Melissa” (1972 ), and “ Ramblin’ Man” (1973) , the musicians brought an energy that continued the spirit of the Allman Brothers. Even though the band’s well-loved records  allow their music to live on, the jam-band nature of the group means that the true Allman Brothers experience rests in their live shows. Being over 50 years out from the height of the Allman Brothers fame  makes reviving this live experience a tall order, but if anyone could do it, it would be the musicians in the Allman Betts Family Band.

In addition to the frontmen being the sons of founding members of the Allman Brothers ,  the Revival featured a wide array of world-class musicians who either performed with the Allman Brothers or were influenced by their music.  What results is a collaboration of legends brought together to celebrate the music of the Allman Brothers. The long list of notables includes Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson , Jimmy Hall , Jackie Green, Sierra Hull, Ally Venable, Larry McCray,   Orbi Orbinson, Devon Allman, Duane Betts  and Tal Wilkenfeld.

Each song of the nearly three-hour-long performance  switched between featuring one or two of these guests,  resulting in an experience that felt less like a concert and more like an entire festival. This constant rotation of virtuosic musicians created a night of some of the best music-making, improvisation   and soloing that this reviewer has heard.

While every note played and every musician who played on Friday is worthy of being written about, unfortunately brevity demands a focus on just the highlights. While no surprise given his musical background, throughout the night singer and harmonica player Hall  stole the show. While the show mostly focused on improv, whenever a song returned to established lyrics, it was always Hall  who sang them best.

Tal Wilkenfeld on bass  was a star musician for the entire night with an especially notable solo opening,   “Whipping Post” (1969).  Among the litany of guitar solos ,   moments  by Devon Allman, Duane Betts and McCray  stood out. Devon’s greatest moment was found in his nearly three-minute solo on his father’s song , “Dreams” (1969).  The song also showcased Devon’s  heartfelt, bluesy singing. Duane shined on his solo on   “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” (1971), a song written by his father, Dickey.  The hook of the song centers on the transposition of the theme from A minor to C minor, two harmonically distant keys.  Duane did well to navigate these transpositions in his solo while building a compelling musical narrative ending in a face-melting conclusion.

While it likely proves a subjective and flawed effort to compare the solos of such talented musicians, McCray’s feature on   “Soulshine” (1994)  was among the best of the night. While not as flashy as others, his soulful phrasing and understated melodic playing created a mature and memorable musical statement. The quality of McCray’s bluesy singing on “Soulshine” even rivaled that of Hall.

With so many notables playing such incredible music, noting their excellence and achievement could indefinitely go on. But the real impact of the show is not based on the musicians virtuosity, but rather their ability to cultivate human connection. The audience was overwhelmingly original Allman Brothers fans from the ’70s, and being able to hear a continuation of the Allman Brothers in the year 2023 clearly meant the world to them . For the musicians, such a large collaboration took the character of a family reunion, bringing together players from all over who normally would not have the time to connect with each other.

For old fans of the Allman Brothers, the Revival tour allows them to li ve through o ne more great concert. For younger fans just discovering the famous ’ 70s Southern rock band , Devon and Duane  provided a truly special opportunity to experience some of the best blues jamming on some of the best written songs in the world.

Individually, they're Devon Allman and Duane Betts, two solo artists and modern-day guitar heroes who've both spent years creating their own version of American roots music. Together, they're the leaders of The Allman Betts Band, a supergroup anchored by sharp songwriting, fiery fretwork, and an historic legacy. Inspired by the classic sounds of the group's family tree, The Allman Betts Band makes timeless rock & roll for the modern world, blurring the boundaries between blues, Americana, and southern soul. Critically-acclaimed studio albums like Down to the River and Bless Your Heart have established the band's own legacy of music and brotherhood, while hundreds of live shows — including annual performances of the all-star Allman Betts Family Revival — have sharpened the group's chemistry onstage. There's a richly historic lineage to The Allman Betts Band, but these musicians proudly live in the modern world, carving out a contemporary soundtrack for the American South.

About the allman brothers band.

The Allman Brothers Band were an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (founder, slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums). Subsequently, based in Macon, Georgia, the band incorporated elements of blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows featured jam band-style improvisation and instrumentals.

The group's first two studio releases, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) and Idlewild South (1970) (both released by Capricorn Records), stalled commercially, but their 1971 live release, At Fillmore East, represented an artistic and commercial breakthrough. The album features extended renderings of their songs "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post", and is considered among the best live albums ever made.

Group leader Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year – on October 29, 1971 – and the band dedicated Eat a Peach (1972) to his memory, a dual studio/live album that cemented the band's popularity and featured Gregg Allman's "Melissa" and Dickey Betts's "Blue Sky". Following the motorcycling death of bassist Berry Oakley one year and 13 days later on November 11, 1972, the group recruited keyboardist Chuck Leavell and bassist Lamar Williams for 1973's Brothers and Sisters. This album included Betts's hit single "Ramblin' Man" and instrumental "Jessica". These tunes went on to become classic rock radio staples, and placed the group at the forefront of 1970s rock music. Internal turmoil overtook them soon after; the group dissolved in 1976, reformed briefly at the end of the decade with additional personnel changes, and dissolved again in 1982.

The band reformed once more in 1989, releasing a string of new albums and touring heavily. A series of personnel changes in the late 1990s was capped by the departure of Betts. The group found stability during the 2000s with bassist Oteil Burbridge and guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (the nephew of their original drummer) and became renowned for their month-long string of shows at New York City's Beacon Theatre each spring. The band retired for good in October 2014 after their final show at the Beacon Theatre.

Butch Trucks died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on January 24, 2017, in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the age of 69. Gregg Allman died from complications arising from liver cancer on May 27, 2017, at his home in Georgia, also at the age of 69. The band has been awarded seven gold and four platinum albums, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Rolling Stone ranked them 52nd on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004.

New Huntsville music festival now has name, dates, genres

September 28 and 29 will mark a new era in Huntsville live music history.

That’s when the city’s new music festival , produced by C3 Presents, a company whose resume includes mega festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, will debut at John Hunt Park.

The festival’s name? South Star.

Today, a website and social media presence were launched for South Star Music Festival.

The performer lineup and ticket prices have yet to be unveiled.

However, the South Star website indicates tiers will be offered beyond a standard general admission ticket: “GA+, VIP and Platinum offerings for perks like expedited entry, dedicated viewing areas, air-conditioned lounges and so much more.”

The website/socials branding also hints at the festival’s genre focus, with phrases like, “Celebrate nostalgic pop & rock anthems and make new memories with us in the heart of John Hunt Park.”

In March, South Star festival director Ted Heinig, of C3, told AL.com, “Festivals that are really successful right now are focused top-to-bottom and they’re super-serving their fans with all of the artists they like.”

Online branding touts South Star as a “world class festival experience.” Fans can sign up for updates on the as-yet-unseen music lineup via the website .

South Star’s hours for each day of the festival have yet to be posted. The dates fall on a Saturday and Sunday.

South Star’s opening night overlaps with two highly anticipated college football games in a college football crazed state.

University of Alabama hosts University of Georgia on September 28, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. That same Saturday, Auburn is set to take on Oklahoma, kickoff time to be determined.

In March, AL.com asked Heinig if C3 had concerns about launching a new festival in the middle of football season. At that time, Heinig said, “We have a strategy to blend football with the music.

Huntsville’s two marquee concert venues, Von Braun Center and Orion Amphitheater , don’t currently have concerts schedule the weekend South Star’s occurring.

The opening page of South Star’s new website includes a section addressing this strategy, “SEC country takes football season seriously and so do we. Post up with a beer, good eats and friends to watch the big games at our giant sports bar”.

In March, when AL.com asked C3′s Heinig for an already existing festival to compare what’s now known as South Star too, he cited Atlanta’s Shakey Knees Festival, attended by around 40,000 fans last year . This year’s Shakey Knees lineup boasts artists including Foo Fighters, Bill Idol, Queens of the Stone Age and Arcade Fire.

Huntsville has been without a large-scale music festival since the final Big Spring Jam in 2011. That festival was held downtown. Over its run, Big Spring Jam brought artists like Wilco, Destiny’s Child, Allman Brothers, Al Green, Hall & Oates and a young Taylor Swift to Huntsville.

AL.com first reported the city’s designs on bringing a music festival back to Huntsville in 2022.

THE WHO Announces July 2023 U.K. Tour And New Live Album

jszfunk

https://blabbermouth.net/news/the-who-announces-july-2023-u-k-tour-and-new-live-album#:~:text=THE%20WHO%20Announces%20July%202023%20U.K.%20Tour%20And%20New%20Live%20Album

Legendary rock band   THE WHO   has announced a U.K. tour which will see the band performing with a full orchestra each night with shows from July 6 to 23 in Hull, Edinburgh, London, Derby, Badminton, Durham, St Helens and Brighton. Joining them will be   UB40   featuring   Ali Campbell   across all regional shows except for The O2 London and Edinburgh Castle dates.

Pete Townshend ,   Roger Daltrey   and band will be performing music from throughout the band's nearly 60-year career, including sections devoted to classic albums   "Tommy"   and   "Quadrophenia"   as well as other beloved   WHO   tracks and songs from their 2019   "Who"   album, their first studio release in 13 years.

The 2023 U.K. shows include Edinburgh Castle, the band's first show in the Scottish capital in over 40 years as well as shows in Derby, their first since 1966, The O2 London, Durham and Brighton Cricket grounds. The gigs follow last year's highly acclaimed   "The Who Hits Back"   tour of the U.S., where the band shared the with some of the finest orchestras in America.

The 2023 U.K. tour will feature   THE WHO 's full live band comprised of guitarist/backup singer   Simon Townshend , keyboardist   Loren Gold , second keyboardist   Emily Marshall , bassist   Jon Button , drummer   Zak Starkey   and backing vocals by   Billy Nicholls , along with orchestra conductor   Keith Levenson , lead violinist   Katie Jacoby   and lead cellist   Audrey Snyder .

THE WHO   wound up their   "Who Hits Back"   tour of the U.S. in November last year having wowed audiences in over thirty cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary   David Campbell , brought a new depth and excitement to   Pete Townshend 's music.

Performing with   THE WHO   and an orchestra had been a long-held ambition for singer   Roger Daltrey . He says: "Having not toured the U.K. for six years, it's great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven't been to for decades, will make this very special for me. This opportunity will give our U.K.   WHO   fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights."

Townshend   adds: " Roger   initially christened this tour with an orchestra   'Moving On!'   I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic   WHO   music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I'm really looking forward to bringing this show to the U.K."

THE WHO   are calling upon fans to add an optional £1 donation on to their ticket price at point of sale in support of   Teenage Cancer Trust .   Pete Townshend   and   Roger Daltrey   are longstanding supporters and   Roger   has been the driving force behind   Teenage Cancer Trust 's Royal Albert Hall concerts since they began in 2000.

In July 2019,   THE WHO   headlined Wembley Stadium in London for the first time in 40 years. The show was the only U.K. date on their   "Moving On"   tour and featured the band accompanied by an over 50-piece orchestra performing classic tracks and more as well tracks from their   "Who"   album. "The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley" will be released as a limited-edition yellow, orange and red 3LP set, triple black vinyl, 2CD / Blu-ray set which features the audio remixed in Dolby Atmos and 1CD edition.

THE WHO   with orchestra U.K. tour 2023:

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Stephen

God bless ‘em - know I’d love The Who Hit Back & their modern stuff - cool venues w/places like the castle, Unique Seats, Totally Wicked Stadium, the county grounds etc

JimSheridan

Well, I certainly love The Who but am somewhat wary of certain elements of their hype and repackaging. This quote from the above article kills me:  " THE WHO   wound up their   "Who Hits Back"   tour of the U.S. in November last year having wowed audiences in over thirty cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever...."   Come on, now. Is there anyone out there who thinks that the 2022 tour was better than how they sounded in 1969 or 1971 with Moon and Entwistle?!

That being said, I am delighted that the live disc/blue ray has a setlist that is not just the obvious greatest hits:

1. Who Are You 2. Eminence Front 3. Imagine A Man 4. Pinball Wizard 5. Hero Ground Zero 6. Join Together 7. Substitute (Without Orchestra) 8. The Seeker (Without Orchestra) 9. Won't Get Fooled Again (Acoustic) 10. Behind Blue Eyes (Acoustic) 11. Ball And Chain 12. The Real Me 13. I’m One 14. The Punk And The Godfather 15. Drowned (Without Orchestra) 16. The Rock 17. Love Reign O'er Me 18. Baba O’Riley 19. Tea & Theatre (Acoustic)
