This tour shows the whole new world! From peaceful carnation revolution to rethinking the role of women. We've walked through both the city center and some disctricts with bad reputation. Vero (our guide) tried her best to inspire everyone to go on streets and make art. Tons of interesting stories about artists and their works, great local recommendation and details about street culture itself. Don't miss this chance to see Lisboa from its creative and free-minded side!

Don't think twice - if you have only a day in Lisbon this is the best way to get some exercise and soak in the sights. If you are here longer, it's a priceless way to get your bearings. Big Love!

A Walking Tour of the Best Street Art in Lisbon, Portugal

Metro stations are only some of the locations where you can admire street art in Lisbon

These days, cities are covered in good graffiti and bad graffiti, and Lisbon has more than its fair share of the good variety. The themes are multifaceted, covering Portugal ’s history, pop culture and imaginative abstracts.

Want to visit? Let our local insider show you the best of Portugal on our specially curated nine-day Northern Portugal adventure .

By now, most travellers will have heard of Portugal’s picture-perfect capital full of Medieval infrastructure sandwiched between 19th-century and contemporary buildings. Despite the many steep hills throughout Lisbon, walking is the best way to experience the city (followed by the tram), and each side street and corner has different treasures to discover. One, possibly unexpected, example is street art.

In Mouraria, for example, a few walls are dedicated to fado , a musical style that emerged in this part of the city. Escadinhas de São Cristóvão is a mural that was created by different artists.

The mural Escadinhas de São Cristóvão is dedicated to fado music

The more professional displays of street art have been created to beautify run-down, vacant buildings and add extra brightness to Lisbon’s trendy neighbourhoods. One group of artists is Cargo Collective, who are responsible for amazing displays of street art between Alcântara, Avenida Almirante Reis (a long street that runs from Martim Moniz to the Lisbon Airport) and fashion-focused Avenida da Liberdade. However, the whole city has become a canvas, especially the following areas.

Bairro Alto

Without a doubt, Bairro Alto is one of the most colourful neighbourhoods in Lisbon, in every way. It’s chock-full of bars, clubs, small restaurants and tascas (traditional Portuguese restaurants), tattoo parlours and street art. A couple of areas where you will find a few amazing examples include Travessa dos Fiéis de Deus, Rua da Vinha, and Rua de São Boaventura.

Bairro Alto is a colourful neighbourhood in Lisbon

The Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara is one of the best places near Bairro Alto for a view, and the elevator tram (pictured below) is covered in colourful displays.

The Ascensor da Glória tram is covered in graffiti

Alfama, São Vicente and Graça

Marvel at the street art in Graça

On the other side of downtown Lisbon, Alfama, São Vicente and Graça are full of narrow roads that are lined with eclectic artwork. While riding the tram 28 through Graça, you may see this picture, which was created by artist João Maurício. Not all the art is using paint, though. Quite a few artworks are masterpieces by street artist Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto (aka. Vhils), who uses drilling and carving for his creations.

From the buildings off the highways to the narrow streets and quiet neighbourhoods, Alcântara is another great place to view truly spectacular images.

LX Factory, which is covered in street art, is a trendy hotspot in Lisbon

In Alcântara, you’ll find LX Factory , a hotspot for entrepreneurs, freelancers and artists. This neighborhood of restaurants, bars, stores and offices was converted from old factory buildings that had been abandoned for decades. The artwork certainly adds a bit of colour to this social hub near the centre of Lisbon.

The area around LX Factory is rich in street art

Lisbon Metro

Last but not least, the Lisbon Metro stops, such as Picoas, are further locations where street art (including azulejo tiles ) adorns the walls. Keep your eyes peeled the next time you’re hopping on and off the trains throughout the city.

Street Art Tour

Lisbon’s graffiti wonderland: a journey through street art culture.

street art tour

Our tour is a walking tour of about 2h30/3h, during which we show and explain different styles and techniques as well as (inter)national artists throughout a patchwork of streets, alleys and squares of Lisbon. We highlight the political, economic, and social issues that give rise to Lisbon’s street art and graffiti scenery.

Based on the edu-tainment principle, the tour is meant to be fun as you learn something new. In addition to the art, you’ll also learn about the history of Lisbon and its neighbourhoods… just by reading the walls and exploring legal and illegal pieces all around.

Plus every participant also contributes directly to the street art collective yesyoucan.spray with which we set up paintjams with streetartists from, based in or passing through Lisbon.

With its streets full of iconic hand-painted tiles, Lisbon has been exhibiting art outside for centuries. Beyond the handsome house facades above ground, azulejos (hand-painted tiles) take over the city’s underground network in the shape of abstract paintings and colorful caricatures.

This traditional style of ornamentation is just the start of the outdoor art experience in Lisbon. At street level, artists have transformed entire neighborhoods with giant murals and colorful graffiti. It's a canvas in constant transition – just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new mural pops up on a disused siding or downtown wall.

Here's a guide to exploring Lisbon's iconic street art.

The fine art of Lisbon tiles

It was the Moorish rulers of the medieval period who brought a taste for tiles to the Iberian Peninsula, with the first decorations appearing in Andalusia back in the 13th century. On a trip to Seville in 1498, Portuguese King Manuel I fell for the beauty of azulejo tiling and imported the tradition back to Portugal, kickstarting a national ceramic movement.

Initially, tiles were used to adorn churches, palaces, and even gardens, as a sign of status and wealth. But after Lisbon was ravaged by the earthquake of 1755, tiles became a practical material for rebuilding Portugal's rebounding capital. The trend continued for centuries, giving birth to the iconic tiled facades that adorn the city today. A visit to the Museu do Azulejo is a must if you want to dive deep into the history of this ceramic artform.

Beyond the endless geometric patterns adorning gables, fountains and facades, some panels stand out for their complex figurative scenes. By Largo do Intendente square, the former Fábrica Viúva Lamego ceramics factory draws visitors with its floral motifs and Asian figures that recall Portugal’s ties with the Far East. Over in Largo Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, tiles are used to create striking Masonic elements.

Perhaps the most ambitious use of azulejos is in the wall panel designed by André Saraiva in Campo de Santa Clara. More than 50,000 tiles make up this huge 21st-century mural, which depicts some of the city’s top landmarks in a bold, modernist style.

While it’s tempting to buy azulejo tiles at Lisbon's flea markets, sadly, some have been taken from the city’s facades. If you’re looking for a souvenir, head instead to Cortiço & Netos ; this family-run shop holds a collection of responsibly sourced tiles ranging from the 60s to the 90s, including some rare finds. Alternatively, you can pick up a brush and paint your own tile at a local atelier (workshop) such as Cerâmica São Vicente in Alfama.

People waiting at an art-filled underground station in Lisbon

Find fine art underground in Lisbon

Art has also found its way into the city's underground stations, with illustrations, quotes, and even stained-glass structures showcased across the Lisbon Metro network. The metro first arrived in Lisbon in 1959, and with it came a rediscovery of the versatility of azulejo tiles. Painter Maria Keil was among the first artists to fill these urban spaces with bright, contemporary designs. Over the years, other artists pitched in, transforming the underground into a giant art space.

Every station has a different atmosphere and mood. You can catch some of Keil’s minimalist tile patterns at Restauradores station, alongside designs by abstractionist Nadir Afonso. At the Aeroporto stop by Lisbon airport , you’ll find black-and-white caricatures of Portuguese national icons, while the Oriente stop is full of ocean-themed murals commissioned for Expo 98. It’s also worth stopping at Olaias, where industrial metal columns stand out against bright stained-glass ceilings.

The best neighborhoods in Lisbon for urban street art

In Lisbon, street art and history go hand in hand, and a new generation of graffiti-inspired street artists are taking on the city as their canvas. Neighborhoods such as Alfama and Mouraria are an outdoor exhibition space for fado-themed works of street art. A homage to Severa, the city’s first fado singer, can be seen halfway up the Escadinhas de São Cristovão, while the legendary Amália Rodrigues has her face rendered in a cobblestone wall in Rua de São Tomé.

Around Graça, you can spot references to the Carnation Revolution that removed the Estado Novo regime in murals by the likes of Shepard Fairey (the street artist behind the global Obey phenomenon). There are nods to literary figures here, too, like the psychedelic illustration of the poet Fernando Pessoa by AkaCorleone on Rua Damasceno Monteiro.

Fado-inspired street art in Lisbon

Art has also helped reshape many formerly run-down neighborhoods on the outskirts of Lisbon. LX Factory in Alcântara is proof of the reviving power of art; this former textile plant is now home to creative workshops mingled with striking urban art pieces. Among them is a giant bee made from a mix of paint and recycled trash – a signature style for local artist Bordalo II , whose work aims to expose the excesses of consumerism in today’s world.

The industrial neighborhood of Marvila has also become something of an open-air museum. It’s here that you’ll find the work of the Underdogs Gallery , the cultural project behind many of the city’s most ambitious street art collaborations.

Most of the large-scale murals you'll spot in Marvila emerged during the MURO art festival in 2017. But new statement pieces are still popping up, like the basketball court painted by Halfstudio in 2020 in nearby Chelas. This vividly colorful work pays homage to neighborhood icon and basketball enthusiast Oliveira Donbell, and also makes a nod to Michael Jordan’s legendary team, the Chicago Bulls.

Further out, near Lisbon’s airport, there's more must-see art in Quinta do Mocho. For years, this district had a rough reputation, tied up with drugs and crime, but in 2014, the O Bairro i O Mundo initiative invited national and international artists to revamp many of the district's run-down facades, creating a new street art sensation. The artworks reflect the neighborhood’s social and cultural diversity and musical influences, with portraits of residents alongside famous music artists such as Eminem and Bob Marley.

The best street art murals in Lisbon (and where to find them)

For art fans with a tight schedule, here's our pick of the artworks to track down for a taste of Lisbon's exuberant creativity.

  • Marielle Franco, Panorâmico de Monsanto : This powerful piece by Alexandre Farto (aka Vhils) adorns the wall of the abandoned restaurant at the Panorâmico de Monsanto viewpoint, paying tribute to Brazilian politician and human rights activist, Marielle Franco, assassinated in Rio de Janeiro in 2018.
  • Balance, Arroios: An astoundingly colorful revamp of a public basketball court in Campo dos Mártires da Pátria – the work of local artist, AkaCorleone.
  • Half Fox, Santos: Portuguese artist Bordalo II was the mind behind this eye-catching fox made with repurposed trash, looking out over busy boulevard Avenida 24 de Julho.
  • Fado Vadio, Mouraria : An irreverent and cheeky homage to Severa, Lisbon’s first fado icon, can be spotted while descending the Escadinhas de São Cristovão steps.
  • Revolutionary Woman, Graça: Shepard Fairey's propaganda artwork style pops up all over Lisbon, including in this depiction of a woman with a flower-topped rifle on Rua Natalia Correia , inspired by the Carnation Revolution.
  • Poseidon, Alfama: Valencian duo PichiAvo created this huge representation of the god Poseidon, eyeing the Tejo river approvingly near the Santa Apolónia train station.
  • Derlon, Alcântara: Heavily influenced by traditional woodcut techniques, Brazilian artist Derlon painted this iconic series of black-and-white characters around LX Factory in 2012.
  • Oferenda, Marvila: Following the Ibero-American theme that defined the 2017 MURO art festival, Portuguese illustrator Kruella d’Enfer designed this tropical flower bouquet called “offering” on Rua Alberto José Pessoa.
  • Mário Belém, Graça: "Better to be lost here somewhere than on my way to nowhere” is the thought-provoking name of this 2021 piece on Rua Damasceno Monteiro, depicting a girl on the edge of a pot amid lush flowers and philodendron leaves.

How to explore Lisbon’s street art

Walking is the best way to discover the city’s colorful tiled panels and street art murals. The website of the Galeria Arte Urbana is the perfect resource for planning a self-guided tour, with information on pieces of street art across the city.

It pays to time a trip to coincide with the urban art festival MURO in July. A who's who of national and international artists arrive to creatively revamp a new Lisbon neighborhood every year. For tours that explore the background stories behind landmark pieces of street art, contact Lisbon Street Art Tours , or better still, join one of their spray-painting workshops.

Street art in Lisbon

Where can you find great pieces of street art in Lisbon , Portugal?

I’ve been to Lisbon a couple of times and really enjoyed its vibrant street art scene.

As always with great street art, it gives you some interesting insights into the local Portuguese culture.

Lisbon street art tours

To discover Lisbon’s latest street art gems, you can take a small group street art walking tour . It’s a 3-hour tour led by a street artist.

Find out when the tour is running:

A couple of times a week you can also find a free (tip-based) street art tour in Lisbon (one of many free tours you can take in Lisbon ).

If you’d like to take a self-guided tour, get a map here.

A beautiful selection of street art in Lisbon

I invited travel bloggers to recommend some great urban art in Lisbon .

The selection is colourful, eclectic and includes local and international artists and a variety of techniques.

The Big Raccoon by Bordalo II

The Big Raccoon Lisbon mural

The Big Raccoon is a piece of street art by Artur Bordalo, known by his professional name Bordalo II, a Portuguese artist from Lisbon.

The Raccoon is one of the first pieces he made in Lisbon, in 2015, using trash and garbage to create portraits of animals.

Bordalo II has since created many more “Big Trash Animals” all over the world, including a fox on Rua de Xabregas in Lisbon and The Half Rabbit, a great piece of urban art in Porto .

Bordalo II’s work uses the rubbish that we throw away to create his animals, who are victims of the destruction we are reeking on the planet.

The Big Raccoon is in a car park close to the Jerónimos Monastery and is black and white 3D as the trash stands out from the wall.

The background is painted green, yellow and blue as if it were a woodland setting.  As the artwork is now several years old it is starting to fade a little, and some plants have started growing out of the trash – which seems to suit the piece very well!

Address: R. Bartolomeu Dias 43, 1400-038 Lisboa, Portugal

By Claire from Why Visit Barcelona

The fox by bordalo ii

The Fox by Bordalo II in Cais do Sodre

Portuguese street artist, Artur Bordalo, simply known as Bordalo II, has become somewhat synonymous around Portugal for his bold and beautiful street art installations that certainly make a bold statement.

Made entirely out of trash, these vibrantly colourful creations are not only beautiful to behold but also send a clear message.

Using all manner of plastic, car parts, and other disused trash, Bordalo II aims to cast the spotlight squarely on our 21st-century wastefulness and consumerism and the trail of destruction that is left in its wake.

Especially beautiful is his “Big Trash Animal” wall mural series that often portrays endangered species and aims to invoke an emotional connection with the viewer, questioning our habits and the impact it has on the natural world around us.

One such poignant piece is found only a short 5-minute walk from Lisbon’s trendy Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira), which is located opposite the Cais do Sodre train and metro station.

Walking along the Avenida 24 Julho street you won’t miss this stunning creation set on a blue façade of a dilapidated building located at R. da Cintura do Porto de Lisboa 32.

Whether you’re visiting for a short stay or longer, a quick stop by The Fox or any of Bordalo II’s other works is definitely well worth adding to your Lisbon itinerary .

The Adriana ‘DRI’ mural by Jacqueline de Montaigne

The Adriana ‘DRI’ mural in Lisbon

You will feel with the eyes of twin women following you whether approaching or departing on a street in Lisbon .

The Adriana ‘DRI’ mural is painted almost entirely in shades of blues – cobal, navy, peri, and sea blue – except for the surprise pop of red and black.

It was painted by Jacqueline de Montaigne, a Lisbon-based painter and muralist born in 1980, who was inspired by the androgyny movement.

“In a society obsessed with aesthetic perfection, superficial happiness, and clear gender identity, Jacqueline consistently deconstructs these stereotypes in her work, striking to provoke . . .”

Her trademark is the incorporation of blue, visually representing melancholy.

She paints female twins which look out on the neighborhood. The outlines of their eyes, noses, and lips are painted a smokey blue. Life is reduced to black and blue. But a punch of color – bright red – frames their heads. And a bluebird (which symbolizes happiness and joy) lands on one girl’s forehead.

Amália Rodrigues by Vhlis

Amália Rodrigues on Calçada do Menino Jesus

A tribute to one of Lisbon’s most iconic faldo singers, the cobblestone street art of Amália Rodrigues on Calçada do Menino Jesus, is a must see in the Alfama neighborhood.

Unlike many of the other Lisbon street art examples, this work of art is not painted, but meticulously crafted from cobblestone tiles.

Created in 2015 by artist Vhlis, this lovely portrayal of the famous singer’s face is created with thousands of tiny square tiles.

The work of art of Calçada do Menino Jesus sits on a sloped pavement adjacent to a restaurant with outdoor dining, which is a great place to enjoy a meal if visiting Lisbon with kids .

Some say when it rains in Lisbon, Amália Rodrigues appears to be crying in the street mural. Regardless, this beautiful work by one of Lisbon’s most notable artists is a moving memorial to one of the country’s most beloved and famous performers.

Rodrigues, who died in 1999, was a Portuguese actress and Fado singer, who achieved highest honors in Portugal and worldwide during her lifetime.

Desassossego by Akacorleone

street art walking tour lisbon

Pedro Campiche, better known by his moniker Akacorleone, is one of Lisbon’s finest homegrown street artists.

He is known for his use of bright, saturated colours and interesting shapes, creating a style that’s very easy to recognise once you have encountered his work.

Desassossego, meaning ‘restlessness’, is one of his lesser-known murals, but definitely one of the coolest and most striking.

I stumbled across it when exploring the high-up Graça neighbourhood while looking for miradouros, one of my favourite things to do in Lisbon .

Indeed, it is the elevated position that makes this mural stand out. It is painted onto the side of a residential building on Rua Damasceno Monteiro as it bends around the hillslope.

You can’t miss it as you walk around the corner, and its positioning means you can also spot it from some really cool angles lower down the hill.

The mural itself is like a melting pot of colours and shapes, with an image of a starry-eyed character in sunglasses providing the main focal point.

Facing roughly south, it catches the sunlight for most of the day, accentuating its vibrance, and invoking feelings of exuberance and vitality – everything I love about Lisbon!

A Tribute by Camila Watson

street art walking tour lisbon

Lisbon is a stunning, historic city filled with culture. You’ll find architectural masterpieces, statues, monuments, and some incredible works of art.

There are so many fun things to do in Lisbon . If you want to get a bit off the beaten tourist path, head over to Mouraria to see “A Tribute.” It’s a  lovely outdoor photo exhibit by British photographer Camilla Watson.

There are more than 25 images of the older people that lived in this neighborhood.

They chose the photos that reflected them as unique individuals to be displayed on the walls in this neighborhood. It’s a beautiful representation of the rich history of this area.

The images are printed onto wood and mounted on the walls. It’s such an interesting and unique display and so reflective of Lisbon.

The artist’s goal was to honor those portrayed in her works and to offer them to passersby in the ultimate outdoor art gallery.

This permanent street exhibit is located in the Beco das Farinhas, not far from her studio.

fado vadio lisbon mural

Tucked away in the narrow winding staircases of Escadinhas de São Cristóvão in the neighbourhood of Mouraria , you will come across the colourful Fado Vadio street art mural – one of the most famous street art pieces in Lisbon.

Created by a group of talented local artists, this mural pays tribute to Fado, a traditional music genre of Portugal.

Fado also has a strong historical connection with this neighbourhood – frequently referred to as the birthplace of Fado music .

It is an integral part of Portuguese culture and tradition and was listed by UNESCO as World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. Watch a performance in Lisbon if you are interested in Fado music.

The mural is within walking distance from the famous Rossio Square and the Santa Justa Lift.

Fado Vadio literally means “Bohemian Fado”. This extensive colourful graffiti shows the history of Fado through symbols and figures.

It depicts several famous Portuguese Fado musicians, like Maria Severa and Fernando Maurício. You will also find musical lyrics, bread and wine, painted all over the walls here.

Poseidon (God of the Sea) by PichiAvo

Poseidon mural near Santa Apolonia Station in Lisbon

The capital city of Portugal is home to so many stunning street art pieces. Whether you have 2 or 3 days in Lisbon , you must include a walking tour of various neighborhoods to check its free artworks!

One such spot is the Santa Apolónia Station. This is the oldest railway terminus in Portugal, is located in the heart of Lisbon in the parish of São Vicente, with the Tagus River views. Located near this railway terminal is a colorful painting of Poseidon – the God of the Sea.

It was painted by a group of artists known as PichiAvo.

Its exact location is – #65 Calcade de Santa Apolonia. When you drive or take a sightseeing bus tour to the newer areas of Lisbon such as the Parque das Nações and the Lisbon Oceanarium, you will pass this brightly painted side-wall!

Lisa mural by Tami Hopf

Lisa Mural Lisbon

This mural is entitled Lisa and was painted by artist Tami Hopf. It seems that it has been around since November 2017 which is not surprising considering the beauty of the piece.

Lisa is a blindfolded woman who is releasing three white feathered birds into the sky. Behind Lisa, we can see a dull yellow circle which could be interpreted as the sun. Lisa is wearing a floral hair do.

We came across this mural during our 4 days in Lisbon . It can be seen from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia which provides an incredible view of the Alfama neighbourhood, famous for its orange rooftops.

It can also be seen from the street called Calcadinha Da Figueira, just a little bit below the Miradouro, by the Santa Luzia Elevador.

We really liked the positive vibes that the piece was sending. We interpreted the white birds as peace and hope. The flowers and the sun seemed to represent growth and life which was fitting, since we were having a great time in Lisbon.

Overall it seems that Lisa is smiling even though she cannot see which is a message we liked.

Tiled mural by andré saraiva

Lisbon Tiled Mural by André Saraiva

The Jardim Botto Machado gardens are located only a stone’s throw from the National Pantheon and the well-known Feira da Ladra flea market in the historic Alfama neighbourhood of Lisbon.

It is here that you’ll find a stunning 188 meters long, hand-painted tiled mural by artist André Saraiva which was launched to the public in 2016.

This artwork which was an initiative between the local Sao Vicente Parish, the Lisbon City Council, and the Museum of Design and Fashion (MUDE) is a depiction of Lisbon and other cities that the artist has lived in.

It’s a vibrant re-imagination of the cityscape and features prominent Lisbon landmarks including the Campo Pequeno Bullring, The Lisbon Aqueduct, the Tagus River and Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, the Santa Justa Elevator found in Baixa/Chiado, as well as the historic São Jorge Castle.

Whilst Portugal has become known for its beautifully intricate traditional tilework, called Azulejos, this piece is a more whimsical, modern, and almost cartoonish representation.

Thanks to its vivid colours, this mural has become a much-loved spot by which to capture the perfect Lisbon Instagram snap and is definitely worth visiting when exploring one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, Alfama.

Abandoned mansion snake lady

street art walking tour lisbon

Looking to go beyond Lisbon for a taste of authentic Portuguese life and dramatic seaside cliff walks with surprisingly gorgeous, but salt-fading impermanent street art?

The Fisherman’s Trail coastal walk starts just south of Lisbon and follows ancient fishing trails along the sun drenched Alentejo coast littered with white-washed fishing villages.

I just love that there’s an incredible 2 story high purple pregnant snake lady on the side of an abandoned mansion .  It sits isolated, atop a sand dune overlooking the river and Atlantic ocean.

My favorite part of this 4 day sandy, tasty and interesting multi-day hike was scrambling around this amazing mansion drenched with quality street art inside and out.  The fierce lady gave me some power to continue my hike.

Word on the street is that there’s a buyer to renovate the mansion, so get here soon before it potentially changes.  But I guess that’s the point of street art.

This area is ignored by most hikers as there’s a shortcut most people take to bypass this section.  Awesome, less people!

You can rent a car from Lisbon and drive 2 hours to get there or use the excellent express buses that take 2.5 hours and cost less than 20 euros. Go to Lisboa Sete Rios Station in Lisbon and take the Redes Expressios bus to Vila Nova de Milfontes.

Walk out of town inland, cross the bridge and immediately take the trailhead to the right through a cork orchard and you’ll pop right out into the open property.  Check out the barns too!

A really authentic way to get there would be to bus to Porto Covo and walk along the dramatic seaside about 4-5 hours on Rota Vicentina Fisherman’s Walk to Vila Nova de Milfontes where the art is located.

Street art in Lisbon

Where to find street art in lisbon .

Street art in Lisbon... what a story ! I have never seen a city that is full of such artistic energy. I feel as if inspiration is watching over the city at every corner. Lisbon itself is a work of art. The people of Lisbon are lucky enough to be able to see their old walls become beautiful, colourful murals over the years !

In this post, you will find the answers to several questions :

  • Street-art workshop : with whom to make a street art mural ? Or simply a street art tour ?
  • Where are the most beautiful street art murals in Lisbon ?
  • Who are the most active street artists in Lisbon ?
  • Where to buy street-art in Lisbon ?

Lisbon, a source of inspiration for street artists.

I am not mistaken if I write that today, many big names in street art have passed through Lisbon to soak up this creative atmosphere. Among them, we find Blu , Os Gemeos , Shepard Fairey , C215 , Mr Chat , Erica il Cane , Sam 3 , PichiAvo , etc... For the moment, Banksy has not yet come to Lisbon.

And for the locals who play at home without necessarily being born there : Vhils , Bordalo II , Utopia , Márcia Bahia , Andrea Tarli , Aka Corleone , Odeith , Nomen , Mar , RAM , Smile , Hium , Styler , Mariana Dias Coutinho , Tamara Alves , J de Montaigne , Youthone , etc...

The murals created by local artists are massive. We often discover them together during our tailor-made private tours . If you are a budding artist and would like to get your hands dirty (or sprayed, if I may say so), discover our street-art workshop !

Better than a street art tour in Lisbon ? Do it yourself with our street art workshop !

Doing street art legally in Lisbon ? Yes, it is possible ! A street art workshop with a professional artist allows you to leave your artist touch while discovering an extremely fun creative discipline .

The VisitmyLisbon team proposes you to realize, during more or less two hours, a street art mural !

Our objective is simple : to allow you to have fun and understand at the same time the techniques of graffiti .

For a team-building, a private tour or during a paper chase, you will create a graffiti, a drawing or a crew name. The main idea is to make you discover the important steps of making a drawing .

A street art workshop allows you to realize the complexity that lies in the accuracy and combination of certain skills.

Looking for a Lisbon street-art walking tour ? We have something for you.

Our Lisbon tours are completely private and tailor-made . For your teenage graffiti fans, it’s just perfect ! Our guide will take you through the unusual Lisbon, where works of art can be found at every corner .

To make the kids happy, we even have a surprise in store for them… They can test their artistic skills !

There is no specific street art district in Lisbon, there are many ones !

Street art guide : where to see the best street art in lisbon , amadora (giant wall murals by odeith), the "amoreiras wall of fame", bairro alto, cais do sodre, street art in graça.

Graça Hill is a real source of inspiration for street art artists. Don’t miss the stairs of Caracol da Graça , whose walls are entirely covered with fantastic works by the Yes, You can spray collective .

Marvila is the main Lisbon street art district for large murals

Street art in mouraria is the most famous in lisbon, vhils, bordalo... history and style of lisbon's greatest street artists.

Flop, wild, realistic, relief... Who is doing what in terms of graffiti in Lisbon ? We'll talk about some local artists (not necessarily Portuguese) according to their notoriety, from the most known... to the next stars !

I'll start with the two most famous street artists but who don't paint : Vhils and Bordalo II.

1- Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils , is always cutting, smashing, surgically exploding walls and polystyrene posters. He creates portraits of people, sometimes famous, sometimes anonymous. His credo is to remove in order to better reveal !

Today he is at the forefront of the Lisbon street art scene , since he is known worldwide. His workshops are now located in Barreiro, on the other side of the river, a city that we love.

2- Artur Bordalo, aka Bordalo II (his grandfather was also an artist), was once my neighbour. He started his career with simple graffiti before perfecting his skills in relief and third dimension .

I like to call him the green artist of Lisbon. His credos are ecological awareness and the animal cause. He reuses everything he can find as waste to create animals, sometimes in anamorphosis. His artistic dialogue is known worldwide and is popular. It is therefore not uncommon to come across his work when you visit Lisbon with us .

Our 4 other favourite artists from Lisbon :

Legal walls for street art in lisbon.

Lisbon is full of corners. While it is easy to do street art as it was originally done, in vandal mode, it is better to be careful and respect the rules . Any act of vandalism is severely punished!

Today, frescoes and street art in the broad sense are so fashionable that the Lisbon City Council has found it interesting. It supports graffiti in Lisbon's outlying areas a nd attracts visitors who are passionate about street art.

However, the amount of money to subsidise these works is only 1% of the total budget to clean up the wild street art. If you get caught, it can be a very big deal (up to €10,000)!

So, if you feel you have the soul of an artist but don't want to take the risk, contact us to make street art legally .

Where to buy street art in Lisbon ?

Lisbon has few art galleries specialising in street ar t.

Nevertheless, we suggest you two places that should satisfy you:

1- The Underdogs art gallery owned by Vhils and which gathers the most important street-art artists of Lisbon. The exhibitions are fantastic.

2- Dedicated Lisboa which sells material for the artists but also exclusive prints .
