Yep, love them too, I first started following them after they did Antarctica, i thought they may end up wanting to do the NW passage or the North Pole, just because they can!

They certainly outdid themselves on this tour. My vicarious vagabond following has been a pleasure since they were first rambling thru Asia up to  Kara swimming  on top of the world…..ya think  they can return to a sprinter van after the splendor Ponant had to offer them.   Thanks Kara and Nate

I love that they get as much enjoyment in camping on a beach in Mexico to staying in some of the most expensive hotels (or ships) in the world.  They seem to love their van, so hopefully will have some more adventures in that again.

The Epic Travels of Kara and Nate

A+plane+flying+featuring+a+beautiful+blue+sky.

Tara Smith , Junior Editor March 11, 2021

In January of 2016, Kara and Nate Buchanan moved out of their apartment, sold their cars, put all of their belongings in storage, and boarded a one way flight to Tokyo, Japan. Before they left, they gained over 2 million miles and points through travel hacking. Travel hacking is working within the rules of existing airlines, credit cards, and hotels to earn free travel which can include flights, lodging, and other upgrades. The original plan was to travel for a year, exploring the world and learning about different cultures, before heading back to Nashville, Tennessee to settle down. This one year plan turned into four plus years of full time travel and a full-time job on YouTube, their channel amassing 2.12 million subscribers. Kara and Nate are high school sweethearts who are now in their 30s and together they have been to one hundred countries across all seven continents on their travel journey throughout the years. Before they pandemic, they mostly traveled internationally, discovering unique accommodations as well as the culture and history of where they are. Here are my personal favorite videos on their channel.

10 – Incredible Futuristic Mountain Hut

In this episode, Kara and Nate hiked 6 hours over a glacier to get to where they were sleeping for the night in a futuristic mountain hut in Zermatt, Switzerland. Switzerland was their 92nd country out of 100. This video has incredible drone footage and will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is one of the many cool accommodations that Kara and Nate have stayed in on their travels.

9 – Almost Disastrous Hike In the Dolomites

Kara and Nate take on Italy in this episode. This video takes place in Kara and Nate’s 91st country out of 100 in Dolomites, Italy. This episode is an epic hiking adventure with gorgeous scenery of mountain peaks, a very beautiful blue lake, and gorgeous green meadows with some cute cows. It wouldn’t be a Kara and Nate video without drone footage and this video is no exception. Kara and Nate hike in the mountains of Italy that remind them of the Swiss Alps.

8 – We rented an entire island in the Philippines

In this video Kara and Nate took a risk and rented an entire “cheap” private island in the Philippines with very little information on it in hopes of discovering a hidden gem. This video is great to see the culture of the Philippines and gain some knowledge about their cuisine and lifestyle. It wouldn’t be a Kara and Nate video without gorgeous views and spectacular drone footage.

7 – We slept in a jungle tree house (overlooking an active volcano)

This video takes place in their 99th country of Vanuatu on the island Tanna. On this island, Kara and Nate stayed in a tree house overlooking an active volcano. Tanna is home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes and the footage of it is incredible! In this video the culture of the people is explored as well as the nature of Tanna. Something interesting about the tree house they stay in is that the locals build them in Banyan trees.

6 – World’s ONLY Glass Tee-pee & Baby Huskies

In Kara and Nate’s 90th country they take on Rovaniemi, Finland where they sleep in the world’s only glass roof tee-pee which is one of the more unique accommodations they have slept in. They also go on a dog sledding adventure with lots and lots of huskies.

5 – Our Norwegian Tiny Home Treehouse

In their 95th country of Norway, Kara and Nate stay in a tiny home tree house which is a very unique accommodation. Gorgeous views, no internet, and a cozy fireplace is what Kara and Nate experience in this episode.

4 – Our tiny home in the Swiss Alps

This video has incredible views as well as astounding drone footage of the mountains. The tiny house is on the top of a mountain and takes two hours to hike to. If you are a fan of mountains watch Kara and Nate’s trek and experience the natural beauty of the Swiss Alps.

3 – Incredible off-the-grid houseboat (Coron, Philippines)

The nature and views in this video are absolutely stunning. Kara and Nate stay in a houseboat in a blue lagoon in the Philippines and it is so beautiful. The notorious drone footage is epic in this installment of Kara and Nate’s travels.

2 – Maldives Most Luxurious Resort

This is the most luxurious resort in the Maldives and has amazing drone footage and crystal clear blue water. If you are looking for a really epic tour of an over-water villa this video is for you! Admire the beauty of the Maldives and experience some escapism by watching Kara and Nate take on the Maldives.

1 – First Impressions of Antarctica (our 7th continent)

antarctica cruise kara and nate

Due to the pandemic, 2020 led Kara and Nate back to the United States for the first time in a while. They booked an Airbnb in Tennessee and quarantined when they got back to the U.S from Singapore. After a couple months of not knowing what to do next they bought a converted Sprinter van and set off to travel the United States abiding by travel restrictions along the way. So far they have been to Colorado where Nate biked the entire Colorado trail as well as Oregon and Washington where they explored the Pacific Northwest. After aimless wandering in the summer of 2020, they have decided to make a goal of visiting all 50 states. More recently they visited a ghost town in California and slept overnight in an old nuclear bunker from the Cold War located in Arkansas. You can follow along with their journey over on their YouTube Channel ‘Kara and Nate’.

antarctica cruise kara and nate

In March 2020, I found myself where many of us were at that time: stuck in my house, drowning in online school work and bored out of my mind. My screen time was through the roof — largely due to the hours I’d spend scrolling through TikTok each night — and my supply of Netflix series to binge was depleting fast. I was in a funk and in desperate need of some new, engaging content to distract myself with. Luckily, a hero came in the form of Kara and Nate , a husband and wife filming their life and putting it on YouTube.

Kara and Nate are not your typical vloggers. The two began posting on YouTube during a year spent traveling after they moved out of their Nashville apartment and put all their belongings in storage. Their honeymoon in Belize had opened up their eyes to what travel had to offer, and they were itching for more. In 2016, they boarded a plane to Tokyo with every intention of returning to Nashville, but the end of the year did not bring them back home. As their channel grew, they dismissed the idea of “settling down” and set a goal to visit 100 countries, which they accomplished at the start of 2020 after just four years of traveling.

Naturally, when I stumbled upon their channel, I started from the beginning, watching eagerly as they went from Tokyo to Singapore to Thailand and on. It was like finding a new show I loved or reading a book I couldn’t put down. I was anxious to see where they went next and what they did next. As I watched more, I found myself compiling a list of the places I wanted to visit based on where Kara and Nate had traveled: a cruise through Antarctica, an over-water bungalow in the Maldives and a biking trip down the Tuscany Trail. By watching their videos, I had been infected with the very thing that drove Kara and Nate to start their channel in the first place: the travel bug.

Prior to traveling, neither Kara nor Nate had any filming or editing experience. Nate ran a printing company and Kara was a preschool teacher. While this lack of experience may have been apparent in some of their earlier videos, you wouldn’t know it now. Each video is beautifully shot and manages to perfectly capture the essence of each place they visit. This pristine quality has certainly played a role in my love of their channel; I truly feel like I’m there with them. However, what sets these two apart from the many other travel channels on YouTube is not their filming quality but the fun, infectious energy that fills each and every one of their videos.

Kara and Nate make it a habit to seek out unique accommodations and experiences in their travels, but they can also make the blandest day seem like the world’s greatest adventure. Somehow, watching their videos has made me romanticize sitting in airport lounges, dashing to the gate minutes before the plane boards and all the other not-so-glamorous quirks of traveling. They have the epitome of a positive attitude, and when I sit down to watch their newest video, I can feel their optimism emanating from the screen.

Since finding their channel in 2020, I have avidly followed each of their newest adventures. The pandemic posed some unexpected challenges to travel channels, but Kara and Nate took this in stride by buying a van in the summer of 2020, setting off to explore hidden corners of the United States, in the hopes of visiting all 50 states (still waiting for them to visit Michigan, though). They have since returned to the realm of international travel, touching new corners of the world that I wouldn’t have even thought to visit. Their recent North Pole series not only had me adding another location to the very long travel bucket list I have curated but was also a welcome form of escapism as I returned to school and was swamped with loads of boring homework.

Often, watching a social media influencer do something as momentous as visiting 100 countries can make traveling seem like nothing more than an expensive, time-consuming and out of reach pastime. Kara and Nate push against this — they aim to make travel something that is accessible to everyone, regardless of how much money you have saved. When Kara and Nate began traveling, they weren’t swimming in money, nor was their channel some kind of overnight success. They saved and they sacrificed to make their dream of traveling the world a reality. It was inspirational.

Most of us probably aren’t looking to be YouTube influencers, but traveling the world is a dream for many, and Kara and Nate make it plausible. They’ve even started a company called FareDrop , which aims to educate other travelers on how to get inexpensive deals on flights, as well as what kind of travel credit cards to purchase to rack up the most airline points and miles possible — one reason Kara and Nate manage to travel so much. Their mission is not just to make their dream of travel a success, but to help us do what they do; that’s what makes their channel so special.

Fortunately, I’m not the only one who has noticed what a difference these two are making. Kara and Nate were recently nominated for a Streamy Award in the Lifestyle division, and while there’s no audience voting, I will be crossing my fingers that they win because they deserve it. They’ve helped to make my dreams of seeing the world seem not so far out of reach, and I am forever grateful to them for that.

As of now, I don’t have any immediate plans to drop everything and travel the world (no matter how appealing that may sound), but in the meantime, I’m going to keep following Kara and Nate’s adventures, and hopefully — someday — it’ll be me surfing in Mexico or hiking in the Alps.

Norwegian cruise mogul’s success secrets: Focus on the wealthy and absolutely no kids allowed

Viking cruise at the French Mediterannean port of Marseille.

Torstein Hagen founded his cruise line with a few simple principles in mind. Among them: focus on the wealthy and intellectually curious; no nickel-and-diming; and no kids.

Almost three decades on, his Viking Holdings Ltd. is among the world’s biggest luxury cruise operators, and Hagen’s fortune will surpass $5 billion as the company completes its initial public offering in New York.

Viking  raised  $1.54 billion from the oversubscribed share sale, showing that investors are willing to pour money into a sector that was decimated by the Covid pandemic and now is rebounding.

The shares  priced near the top  of the marketed range, according to a  regulatory filing , valuing the company at around $10.4 billion. Hagen controls roughly half of the shares, making him the second-richest person in the industry after Carnival Corp. Chairman Micky Arison, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The listing also marks the pinnacle of an endeavor that, in Hagen’s  words , began with “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships” seeking to woo customers who sought “more than just a vacation.” As the 81-year-old chief executive officer has often told journalists: Viking cruises are for the thinking person, not the drinking person.

Viking representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment on Bloomberg’s calculation of Hagen’s fortune.

Physics Degree

Born near Oslo, Hagen earned a degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University. After a stint in management consulting, he entered the cruise industry in the 1970s. Around two decades later, following multiple failed attempts to help buy or otherwise take control over cruise lines with different investor groups, Hagen led the purchase of the four river ships and formed Viking.

The company initially focused on cruises along rivers up and down Europe before expanding into ocean travel and special expeditions to places like Antarctica and the US Great Lakes. Based in Bermuda, Viking today operates 92 vessels and employs more than 10,000 people.

Its target customers: affluent English speakers aged 55 or older, with time and money to explore the world. Last year, 90% of its clients came from North America, according to the company’s registration statement. In the US, the 55-plus cohort holds around three-quarters of the country’s household wealth, Federal Reserve  data  show.

In recent years, Viking has sold stakes to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and alternative-asset manager TPG Inc. Both offloaded more shares in the offering than initially anticipated, according to a  filing .

Read More: TPG, CPPIB Are Said to Weigh Offering More Shares in Viking IPO

Hagen didn’t sell stock. His daughter, Karine, who has been working for Viking since it was founded and is now executive vice president, will control a small stake of less than 1%.

Viking said proceeds from the offering will be used to “increase our capitalization and financial flexibility” given its “substantial indebtedness.” It had $5.4 billion of debt at the end of 2023.

In a letter to shareholders included in the registration statement, Hagen noted the company sees big growth potential among consumers in China and elsewhere around Asia. That would go beyond “China Outbound,” the cruise offering in Europe with full crews of Mandarin speakers that Viking launched in 2016. The firm is also exploring safaris and land tours.

“We view Viking as the premier provider of travel experiences for thinking people,” the billionaire wrote in the letter. “We do not try to be all things to all people.”
