Hubert Hurkacz has continued his hot late-season form by defeating Ugo Humbert 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) Saturday to advance to the Swiss Indoors Basel final.

The win lifted the World No. 11 Pole ahead of Taylor Fritz into ninth place in the season-long Pepperstone ATP Race To Turin, leaving him just one place behind Holger Rune and the cut for the eight-man Nitto ATP Finals .

Hurkacz chose the hard path to victory. He failed to serve out the match at 5-3 in the third set and then failed to convert two match points on Humbert's serve in the following game. He needed a further three match points in the tie-break to clinch victory.

In the quarter-finals Hurkacz dropped 23 aces on Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor but against the left-handed Humbert he managed just eight, including one on match point. He now has 958 aces for the year as he attempts to reach 1,000 in a season for the first time.

Hurkacz, who won the Rolex Shanghai Masters title earlier this month, seeks his third title of the year, second at the ATP 500 level (Halle, 2022) and eighth overall.

Hurkacz will meet Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final after the Canadian continued the best week of his season. The 23-year-old defeated Holger Rune 6-3, 6-2 to reach his first final since winning the title in at the same event last year.

The Canadian arrived in Basel having won just four of his past 12 matches, but has looked closer to his best at the ATP 500 event. In an all-action display against Rune, Auger-Aliassime broke the Dane’s serve four times to earn his first Top 10 win of the year after 83 minutes. Auger-Aliassime will compete for his fifth tour-level crown on Sunday.

Rune leaves Basel 215 points ahead of Hurkacz in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin. The Pole can cut that gap to just 15 points if he wins the trophy on Sunday, but he says he is trying to keep thoughts of a second appearance in Turin out of mind.

"I try to shut down the noise and do my job, because ultimately if you can do that then you give yourself the best chance," Hurkacz said.

{{tournament.sponsortitle}}, player results, hurkacz notches 40th win of season, boosts turin bid in basel.

Hubert Hurkacz recorded his 40th tour-level win of the season on Tuesday when he moved past Serbian Dusan Lajovic 7-6(2), 6-3 to reach the second round on his debut at the Swiss Indoors Basel .

The 26-year-old fired 18 aces, won 80 per cent (41/51) of his first-serve points and broke Lajovic’s serve three times to become the first Polish man to earn 40 tour-level wins in consecutive years since Wojtek Fibak in 1981-82.

With his victory, Hurkacz has boosted his Nitto ATP Finals qualification hopes. The Pole is currently 11th in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, 300 points behind Holger Rune , who occupies the final qualification spot in eighth.

Earlier this month Hurkacz moved himself into qualification contention for the prestigious year-end event when he won his second ATP Masters 1000 crown in Shanghai, gaining 1,000 points.

Aiming to close the gap to those above him this week at the ATP 500 event in Basel, Hurkacz will next play German Jan-Lennard Struff .

Alex de Minaur is also aiming to compete at the Nitto ATP Finals , to be held from 12-19th November. The Australian increased his slim chances with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Diego Schwartzman to improve to 3-0 in the pair's Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

De Minaur, who also defeated Schwartzman in Tokyo last week, is 12th in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, 190 points behind 11th-placed Hurkacz. The 24-year-old could rise to 10th this week if he wins his second title of the season and his direct rivals fall early.

De Minaur next plays Tallon Griekspoor after the Dutchman beat Brazilian lucky loser Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3.

Earlier, #NextGenATP Swiss Dominic Stricker maintained his impressive form on home soil when he defeated qualifier Benjamin Hassan 7-6(2), 6-2.

The 21-year-old owns a 5-1 record in first-round tour-level matches in Switzerland, having defeated Maxime Cressy in his opening match at the ATP 500 last year. He will next meet second seed Casper Ruud or Antwerp champion Alexander Bublik .

Stricker, who advanced to the fourth round at the US Open , is up one place to seventh in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Jeddah. The lefty is trying to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals for the second consecutive year, after reaching the semi-finals in 2022.

Hurkacz charges to first clay-court crown in Estoril

Not even the switch to the slower surface of clay can stop the serve of Hubert Hurkacz.

The Pole deployed his booming delivery to great effect Sunday at the Millennium Estoril Open, where he overcame Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match to lift his eighth ATP Tour title. Hurkacz sent down 15 aces in a classy one-hour, 27-minute display as he stepped into the winners’ circle at a tour-level event on clay for the first time.

“I’m so happy with my performance today,” said Hurkacz. “I’m proud that I found my serve and that definitely helped me a lot. Pedro is such a great competitor, an amazing battle last night. I needed to play really great tennis to compete with him and fortunately I did it.”

Hurkacz won 83 per cent (29/35) of points behind his first serve against Martinez, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He wrapped his 87-minute victory with an ace to extend his lead in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series to 3-0.

“Obviously it is something special to play in a final,” said Hurkacz after improving to 8-2 in ATP Tour finals. “There was such a great crowd, a great atmosphere and I just really appreciate all the support. It’s an amazing tournament and it was so fun to be here for a week.”

Hurkacz will on Monday rise two spots to a joint-career high No. 8 in the PIF ATP Rankings as a result of his Estoril title run. The 27-year-old will now be full of confidence as he heads to the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where his opening opponent will be Jack Draper.

Despite the disappointment of his final defeat, Martinez can look back on a strong week in Estoril. He sealed the biggest win of his career by PIF ATP Ranking against World No. 8 Casper Ruud in the semi-finals, and is set to rise 17 spots to No. 60 on Monday.

Hubert Hurkacz joins Novak Djokovic as the only player to do this in 2023

Hubert Hurkacz joined Novak Djokovic on an elite list of 2023 statistics when he won the Shanghai Masters final against Andrey Rublev on Sunday.

Hurkacz earned his second Masters 1000 title with a thrilling victory against Rublev, as he Pole won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) in a tight match that boiled down to an all-deciding tie-breaker.

A good start from Hurkacz saw Rublev respond by levelling in the second set, but the contest ultimately came down to the third set tie-breaker.

A closely-fought encounter saw both players saving one match point each but Hurkacz served up two aces to pull away and snatch victory.

He told the ATP website: “It was such a battle, especially emotionally.

“I had a match point and Andrey hit an amazing serve and then he had a match point and then I had some match points.

“It was back and forth and such a tricky match. Andrey was playing some great shots. I was trying to respond. It was one of those matches and I kept believing and I am super happy with how I managed at the end.

“It is such a big tournament and so much tradition. It is a huge event and I am really happy now.”

Hurkacz opened up on his win in his post-match press conference, as he suggested the battling qualities he showed to stay in the match was satisfying.

“I think, definitely just proud of the fight I’m putting and, you know, the commitment I’m giving on every, trying to do it every single point,” said Hurkacz.

“It was the most exciting finish of a match. We both had match points in the tie-break, we both had chances. I was super pumped at the end to battle and win that last point.

“I was just trying to tell myself that what I was trying to do in the tie-break was the right thing to do. I said, stay positive and trust my shots and it was great to come through.”

Hurkacz’s win against Rublev was the second time Hurkacz saved a match point and went on to win the title this season, as he also won the ATP event in Marseille last February after saving a match point in the quarter-finals of that tournament.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic has replicated that effort, as he saved a match point in his epic battle against Carlos Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Masters final back in August before he went in to lift the title.

The Serbian also saved a match point against Sebastian Korda at the ATP event in Adelaide in January before going on to lift that title.

Hurkacz’s previous Masters 1000 win came at the Miami Open in 2021, where he defeated Jannik Sinner in the final.

The victory in Shanghai will see him move up six places to No 11 in the new ATP rankings and the Polish star will now move on to Tokyo this week to compete in the Japan Open Championships.

Jan-Lennard Struff banished past championship-match heartache in style on Sunday at the BMW Open in Munich.

The German overcame World No. 15 Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3 to lift his maiden ATP Tour title at the clay-court ATP 250. The fourth-seeded Struff entered the final with an 0-3 record in tour-level finals, but he showed no sign of nerves in front of his home fans en route to sealing a 79-minute triumph.

“[It feels] unbelievable, and to do it on home soil is just incredible,” said Struff in his post-match interview. “I waited so long. I’m 33 years old and played so long on Tour. It’s just an amazing feeling to do it here in Germany.”

Aged 33 years and 11 months, Struff became the third-oldest first-time champion since the ATP Tour was established in 1990. The pivotal moments in Struff’s victory came in the first set, when he faced two set points on his own serve at 4-5, 15/40, and then another at 40/Ad. From there, the home favourite reeled off 11 points in a row to take the set.

Struff and Fritz’s first Lexus ATP Head2Head clash on clay was played out in damp, cold conditions. The temperature dropped as low as 3 degrees Celsius during the championship match but that did not prevent the German bringing some real fire to the court. Just as he had in his semi-final upset of second seed Holger Rune , Struff used his powerful forehand to dictate rallies against a similarly high-powered opponent.

The home favourite clinched his victory with a powerful smash before immediately raising his arms in celebration to his team. He converted five of 11 break points he earned against Fritz, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to complete a dominant week on home soil in which he did not drop a set.

With his triumph, Struff improved to 16-8 in Munich, where he also reached the final in 2021. The German’s other tour-level finals both came in 2023, when he lost to Carlos Alcaraz as a lucky loser in the Madrid championship match and held a match point against Frances Tiafoe in Stuttgart before also falling to defeat.

"I played good tennis this week, I’m very happy," reflected Struff. "I beat good guys and I’m just unbelievably happy that I did it today.”

Struff will on Monday rise four spots to No. 24 in the PIF ATP Rankings as a result of his Munich title run, just three spots shy of his career high. He had the chance to add another trophy to his cabinet later on Sunday, when he took to court alongside countryman Andreas Mies in the doubles final against Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti . However, India's Bhambri and France's Olivetti triumphed 7-6(6), 7-6(5).
