Jannik Sinner was crowned as the 2023 ATP Fans' Favorite Award winner in singles, outshining some of his more accomplished peers like Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner also beat his generational rival Carlos Alcaraz for this prestigious award , voted online by tennis fans, and is the first Italian man to top this podium. Incidentally, the 22-year-old is the youngest winner of the Fans' Favorite award since Roger Federer.

The Swiss legend was also 22 when he won it for the first time in his breakthrough season in 2003 when he lifted his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon. Federer has since gone on to rack up 18 more crowns of this award for the next 18 straight years.

Federer's dominance of this award eventually ceased in 2022 when he retired from professional tennis, playing just one farewell match at the Laver Cup. Fittingly, his great rival Rafael Nadal picked up the award last year , marking the first time a player other than Federer won it since 2002.

Alcaraz And Djokovic Among Most Googled Athletes Of 2023

Alcaraz And Djokovic Among Most Googled Athletes Of 2023

Nadal's absence last season opened the door for a new winner. Even though Sinner doesn't quite boast the same number of social media followers as Djokovic, Alcaraz, or even Nick Kyrgios, he has endeared himself with the crowd wherever he played.

Sinner was not just the ultimate professional; his charming personality made him an instant crowd favorite. This award came on the back of his career-best year on the ATP Tour. He won his first Masters 1000 title and equaled the previous best-raking of an Italian player on the ATP Tour at World No. 4.

And it would be foolhardy to rule out the importance of the Davis Cup win in November, which might have woken up the entire Italian public to cast their vote for their hero who ended Italy's wait for a second Davis Cup title , which Sinner played a massive role in.

Djokovic finished at No. 1 for the eighth time, adding to his record, after winning three Grand Slam titles and making the final at the year’s other major tournament.

Other ATP award winners include Jan-Lennard Struff for Comeback Player of the Year and 19-year-old Arthur Fils for Newcomer of the Year.

Wozniacki reached the Madrid final in its inaugural edition in 2019. Errani advanced to the semifinal at the Spanish tournament in 2021.

Errani set up a second round match against Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Italian player leads 3-1 in her four head-to-head matches against her Brazilian opponent.

Errani, who is now ranked world number 100, reached her first semifinal since 2017 in Bogotà last April. She won three matches before losing to eventual champion Camila Osorio. Errani came through the qualifying round in Stuttgart and Madrid.

Wozniacki broke twice in the the third and fifth games to take a 4-1 lead. Errani pulled one break back in the sixth game for 2-4 in the sixth game. Ex-No.2 Paula Badosa Vows To Continue Career Despite Back Injury

' src=

Paula Badosa says she will fight to prolong her career as a tennis player after doctors told her that ‘it would be complicated’ to continue playing.

The former world No.2 suffered a stress fracture in her back last year and continues to be affected by the issue. Due to the injury, she ended her 2023 season after Wimbledon and has already retired from matches three times on the Tour this season due to health issues. Although not all of those retirements were directly linked to her back problem. Her latest retirement was at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix where she managed to take a set off Aryna Sabalenka before having to call it quits in the decider.

Speaking to reporters in Madrid on Tuesday, Badosa confirmed that doctors have told her that she may need to have cortisone shots in order to continue playing tennis. Something the tennis star is still trying to get to grips with.

“I cried a lot and I’m still crying sometimes when I hear that and when I have talks with the doctors,”  she said.   “But at the same time, I have this personality, this character that it’s like, ‘I will still get through it, I will still keep fighting’. I’m like that, I’m a little bit stubborn. But I think maybe that in this case can help.”

Badosa has won three WTA titles so far in her career with her best Grand Slam performance being a run to the quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open. She qualified for the 2021 WTA Finals where she reached the semi-final stage.

“Sometimes you just don’t want to accept what the doctor says and you’re like, ‘For sure they’re making a mistake’. I just try to stay positive,”  she continued. “There are some days that I wake up and I’m not feeling that well and I ask myself, ‘Is this worth it?'”

Badosa has undergone four hours of treatment every day heading into this week’s Madrid Open where she will play qualifier Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round. Maniero recently broke into the world’s top 100 and won the biggest title of her career at a Turkish WTA 125 event earlier this year.

Anastasia Potapova beats Diana Schnaider to reach the second round in Madrid

Anastasia Potapova beat Diana Schnaider 7-5 6-4 to reach the second round at the Madrid Mutua Open.

Potapova earned an early break in the first game and held serve at love to take a 2-0 lead. Schnaider, who won a WTA Tour title in Hin Hin, saved a break point in the third game. Schnaider broke back in the 10 th  game to draw level to 5-5. Potapova broke for the second time in the 11 th  game and served out at 15 in the 12 th game.

Potapova converted her third break point in the first game of the second set. Schnaider broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Potapova saved five break points in the sixth game to hold serve before breaking in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Schnaider broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Potapova broke for the third time in the ninth game and sealed the win on her first match point.

Wang Xiyu came back from one set down to beat Ana Bogdan 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. Wan Xiyu set up a second round match against Iga Swiatek.

Wang Xiyu broke serve in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. The Chinese converted her sixth break point in the sixth game to open up a 5-1 lead. Bogdan pulled both breaks back to draw level to 5-5. Wang Xiyu opened up a 5-2 lead. Bogdan won five consecutive points to seal the tie-break 7-5. Wang Xiyu broke serve at 15 in the first game and held serve at 15 to open up a 2-0 lead. Bogdan broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Wang Xiyu saved a match point in the 10 th  game. Wang Xiyu went up a mini-break, but Bogdan pulled back on serve both times. Wang Xiyu won the final three points to seal the tie-break 7-4.

Wang Xiyu went up a 4-0 lead with two breaks in the third game. Bogdan pulled one of the two breaks back in the sixth game. Wang Xiyu broke serve in the eighth game on her second match point.

Karolina Schmiedlova beat Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-4. Schmiedlova broke serve at love in the second game and held serve to 30 to open up a 3-0 lead. Schmiedlova served out the first set 6-3 after saving two break points in the ninth game.

Sinner Wins ATP Fan Favorite Award But…

atp world tour fans favourite award

Jannik Sinner, champion of four ATP titles this year, was announced the ATP Fan Favorite award winner for 2023.

The Italian ended the longtime ATP Fan Favorite reign of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Federer won the award nineteen consecutive times from 2003 to 2021, Nadal won last year.

The selection of Sinner is curious because he’s not exceptionally charismatic or colorful on or off court. And the award distribution has a feel of favoritism in that the tennis establishment is pushing for Sinner to be perceived and recognized by the public as more popular than he actually is.

There is no question who the runaway true fan favorite player in 2023 really is. It’s the all time great, 24 time Grand Slam kingpin and world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, who attracted enormous crowds all year to his tournaments and even practice sessions.

Sinner’s two coaches also received the ATP Top Coach award for 2023, though Sinner did not win a Grand Slam title – while Djokovic won three and lost in the finals in five sets in the Wimbledon final. Most tennis observers believe Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic should have been awarded Coach of the Year honors.

The ATP’s award distribution and tendency to try to downplay Djokovic’s popularity and under-celebrate his dominance of the sport is a cause for concern for its overall image and integrity.

There’s no question Djokovic has high negatives, as they would say in politics. He probably is the active player with the most fans after Nadal (for a given definition of active), but don’t ignore the role of get out the vote campaigns on this award. Italy is a much bigger country than Serbia and the Italian press really did whip up the enthusiasm for Sinner at year end. For an English speaking audience, there isn’t much for an audience to either like or dislike in Sinner. I don’t think his English is good enough to really have a personality that comes through. That may not be the case in Italian. Not sure.

' src=

Scoop Malinowski · December 14, 2023 at 7:40 pm

Bill, or Sinner doesn’t have the personality and extrovert qualities to express charisma, which is no crime, Borg, Sampras, Evert were also super champions but far from dynamic personalities off court. It’s obvious the tennis establishment is pushing Sinner hard now, today they also gave him the Most Improved Player award, though he didn’t do any better in Grand Slams this year. The true most improved is Alex Michelsen who improved his ranking over 500 spots since the start of the year.

Bill McGill · December 15, 2023 at 6:40 am

The most improved player award is awarded by the other players, not the fans or a bunch of ATP executives. The other players probably base their vote on personal experience – how much tougher did someone play them this year versus last. Michelsen is still mostly unknown to non-American players on the tour. He only made a handful of ATP events. Sinner, on the other hand, had a really strong finish to the year. He started off 0-3 H2H versus Djokovic and then won 2 of the last 3. He started off 0-6 against Medvedev and then beat him the last 3 times they played. The fourth round loss to Zverev at the US Open was a disappointment, but it was a close and well played 5 set match. Sinner went from winning a single 250 title in 2022 to taking 4 titles including his first M1000, and was a finalist in another M1000 and the Tour Finals. It’s going to look like a big improvement to the top 100 players.

Scoop Malinowski · December 15, 2023 at 7:33 am

Bill, Sinner started the year off at 15 and went to 4. But he had previously been no. 9 in Nov. 2011. Rankingwise Sinner didn’t improve much at all. Michelsen started this year ranked 600 and was intending to go to college. But he improved so much by summer, he reached an ATP final in Newport. He improved so much he decided to change his career path and skip college and go pro. Since Newport his ranking continued to climb from 190 to the year end rank of 97. There is no way you can tell me Michelsen is not the most improved player in the ATP. Sinner got a political handout award because the establishment wants him to be the next marketable nike star franchise.

And Alcaraz won the Edberg Sportsmanship Award, I see. I’m sure NO other player in the top 100 displayed better sportsmanship than him. 😜

Scoop Malinowski · December 16, 2023 at 8:08 am

Sam, the sportsmanship award exposed itself as a phony prop given to whoever the establishment wants to get some extra attention and image enhancement. Monfils, Gasquet, Agut, Nishikori, Lopez, Isner, Goffin, all deserve it more than Carlos.

Sam · December 19, 2023 at 9:04 pm

Exactly, Scoop. And don’t the players supposedly choose the winner? If so, it’s obvious that someone else entirely is tabulating the votes. 👹

Sam · December 19, 2023 at 9:32 pm

Oh, meant to say this too.

So . . even though his padre secretly records the practices of his biggest rival, Alcaraz himself still gets the sportsmanship award. Well, THAT sure adds up, now doesn’t it? 🔢 🙄

Scoop Malinowski · December 20, 2023 at 7:56 am

Forgot that! Tennis media covered it up quickly.

Scoop Malinowski · December 20, 2023 at 8:02 am

All the awards are rigged for political and agenda reasons. Gasquet and Nishikori should have won the sportsmanship award at least once over the last 15 years.

Sam · December 24, 2023 at 7:02 pm

All the awards are rigged for political and agenda reasons.

Exactly. And I don’t believe the players necessarily choose some of these awards. Maybe they vote , but then someone else massages the numbers. 😐

Scoop Malinowski · December 25, 2023 at 4:16 pm

Sam I agree, not much trust in these ATP awards.

Sam · December 29, 2023 at 8:46 pm

After 19 years of Federer wins, Nadal takes ATP Fans’ Favourite Award for first time

The 36-year-old won two slams in 2022 and finished the year ranked No 2

Rafael Nadal, 2022

Good things come to those who wait!

After almost two decades being eclipsed by Roger Federer , Rafael Nadal picked up one of the few awards he has never won before as he was named the ATP Fans Favourite for the first time on Tuesday.

While Federer retired at the Laver Cup in September, Nadal, always one of the most popular players in the world, took the honours, much to his delight.

“I am super happy to receive the Fans’ Favourite Award [in] 2022,” Nadal said in a video posted on social media and written up by the ATP Tour’s website. “It makes me feel great. I can’t thank you enough everyone for the support not only for this award, but at the same time for all the support that I receive in every single city and event around the world,” Nadal said. “That means everything to me, so I am very [much] looking forward to 2023 to share a lot of positive things again. See you soon!”

The fans love Rafa, and Rafa loves the fans ❤️ @RafaelNadal | #ATPAwards pic.twitter.com/9ifu4Hwm4q — ATP Tour (@atptour) December 13, 2022

Nadal enjoyed another stellar year, winning the Australian Open and French Open titles to take his Grand Slam tally to a record 22. The Spaniard finished the year ranked No 2 despite a series of injuries in the second half of the season.

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis were named the ATP Fans’ Favourite Doubles Pair. The two Australians teamed up to win the Australian Open in January.
