Britain’s oldest private equity group 3i has leapt into the world of ‘experiential’ tourism by buying Audley Travel, the biggest player in the market for tailor-made travel.

3i will invest £159m into the business, acquiring it from fellow buyout firm Equistone. Other financial terms were not disclosed but Audley is forecast to expand sales by a fifth this year to £165m.

The company is only 3i’s second investment in the UK this year, illustrating how firms in busy buyout markets like Britain’s have become more selective in 2015 under pressure from record asking prices for assets, reports Joseph Cotterill, private equity correspondent.

The deal also shows how private equity is betting on a future for high-end travel despite the rise of venture capital-backed services such as Airbnb heavily disrupting the hotel industry.

With the Audley investment 3i is aiming to capitalise on a trend for travellers to seek more customised, expensive trips as long-distance holidaymaking becomes more common.

“If you look back 10 or 15 years ago, there was a lot of this business through travel agents,” said Tom Salmon, a director at 3i. “The world’s become a smaller place,” he added.

“We’ve seen a bifurcation through the whole consumer sector between those offering hard discounts and those with premium, customised offerings.”

Equistone bought Audley in early 2012 and has since doubled the turnover of the business. Under its ownership Audley expanded from its bases in London and Oxford into the United States, opening an office in Boston last year.

“One of the most important things we’ve done was to open the US as a source market” for customers, said Joyce Church, a partner at Equistone. “It’s gone from nothing to 10 per cent of revenues.”

“The US has been slower to disintermediate” as a travel market, Mr Salmon said. “There are lots of generic travel agents selling other people’s holidays.”

Bangkok and Singapore - Asian Treasures

Audley Travel did not miss a beat! Alix paid attention to every detail from departure to what to expect inflight and in country as well as while taking regional flights to transferring to an adjacent region or country. I can't say enough about Audley Travel. For anyone who is hesitant to using a travel company, please consider the convenience, peace of mind and details that they take care of so that you won't have to! The car transfers from the airport to picking out the best hotels and excursions. They will make you want to travel over and over again because you'll be well rested and happy that you didn't have to do all of the legwork. Great expectations were met.

Spent almost a year from the original rough plan to the actual trip. We couldn't find what we wanted on our own. Brittany listened and added ideas when needed. We were then able to look at revisions until we were comfortable. Good recommendations throughout, and we didn't have to find & book side trips. The ease of jumping from one location to the next was seamless with the plan. Loved our phone chats with Brittany and her knowledge of our sites. Turned out to be the most relaxing fun filled trip we have every taken.

Absolutely can't fault Audley (Cara) it…

Absolutely can't fault Audley (Cara) it was a holiday booked at short notice and was the holiday of a lifetime. Non stop, but the trips with EastWest were fantastic. They are small minibusses so not suitable for some but we went places where coaches can't go and the drivers were local and took us places only Icelanders go, hidden gems. And at the last minute we went to see the Northern lights, last minute decision and the gods rolled out the red carpet for us, clear sky moon under the horizon and the sky lit up like I'd never have believed, I won't forget it to my dying day. Anyway Audley booked us a wonderful trip. Everything went like clockwork, they send you a lovely keepsake book with itinerary everything you need to know. I am already planning next year with them.

Our travel expert Brittany was EXCELLENT

Our travel expert Brittany. We decided to see the tulips in the low country on short notice. Brittany was knowledgeable and saved us from making the mistake of renting a car...something we typically do in Europe. She was able to get us great guides and access to the sites we hoped to see. She never 'over sold' us on what could be accomplished on short noticed and we were thrilled with what she planned. This was our 6th trip with Audley and we could not be more pleased.

Amazing Galapagos

This is my sixth trip with Audley and once again Audley have fulfilled every part of the journey. I have had an amazing two weeks in The Galapagos which was put together by Caroline Revnell. From our first conversation and facetime call to the phone call a couple of days before departure nothing was too much trouble. The hard copy of the itinerary was admired much by fellow passengers on the two weeks aboard Yolita 11 and Audley was the topic of several conversations. (Perhaps more business will come your way) This was truly a holiday of a lifetime and it may be hard to top!!!! Fantastic trip to Kerala in India

Fantastic trip to Kerala in India. Both main resorts I stayed in were amazing. Personal driver was friendly and knowledgeable. Upgraded myself to a Villa with a private pool at Marari Beach, which was worth doing. Altogether a relaxing holiday, rejuvenating my personal well-being with great food and lovely attentive resort service. Hannah who arranged my trip with Audley Travel was first class at her job, nothing was to much trouble.

I highly recommend Audley Travel for…customized travel in France.

I highly recommend Audley Travel for customized travel in France! My husband and I just returned from a fantastic trip with friends to Paris, Giverny, Honfleur, the beaches and museums at Normandy, Mont Saint-Michel, and the Chateaus and a winery in the Loire Valley. We were very impressed with the extremely knowledgeable and personable guides and the attention to detail by each of them. The drivers that took us between towns and to many of our tours were excellent and conscientious. We love the freedom and ability to customize our travel, and Audley made this dream trip for us possible. Kelsey White stepped in when our travel original trip planner at Audley left the company shortly before our trip, and Kelsey ensured that things ran very smoothly, and even helped us secure an additional airport transfer, the day before the trip when our flight suddenly got changed. South Africa with teenagers

Robyn came up with a great itinerary for our Cape Town, garden route and safari brief. Being from South Africa and studying in Cape Town meant that she had lots of great ideas, especially for doing things that would keep the interest of our 16 and 14 year old. She had done most of the trip as a teenager herself so the advice was all spot on. Can highly recommend Audley and Robyn, it made the planning and travel super easy for us so we could just enjoy it!

Wonderful 10* service and support

The best travel service in the world! Not only did they plan our trip with great attention to detail, providing a lot of extra valuable travel advice and tips, they really showed their expertise when things went wrong. You can not go wrong with Audley! Everything on point!

My fiancé and I wanted to go to Amsterdam and Brussels but I attempted to plan it myself but it was too stressful since we've never been so I don't know anything about either countries. I looked into other travel agencies who may have deals but their itinerary wasn't what I liked. I've used Audley before for Thailand and that as memorable and phenomenal experience. I decided why not call them again to see if they would help me plan this trip. They got me connected with Brittany who was exceptional. We spoke on the phone for an hour to understand what our preferences when it comes to travel from types of tours to hotel stays. I love the fact that Audley's Travel Specialists have experience in traveling to countries that we want to experience ourselves. Brittany's recommendations were on point! A few days before we left, Brittany reached out to me to go over some important items on my itinerary and to ensure we didn't have any concerns or issues. She made sure we got everything we needed. I definitely wouldn't have been able to put an itinerary like hers. I loved our hotels in Amsterdam and Brussels, perfect location to get to where ever you needed to go in city center and close to various public transportation options. I learned a lot from our tour guides as well. All of our drivers and guides were friendly and knowledgeable about their assigned location. Also! When we arrived to our first hotel we had a nice gift waiting for us. I wasn't expecting but it was so sweet of them! Audley partners with the country's local agency and they too were provided exceptional service. I had a question and they responded back quickly via text messages! Never left me hanging! I would totally recommend Audley to anyone who likes organization and stress free travel, please check them out. The whole personalization factor is remarkable! They take the stress out of planning from beginning to end. Brittany didn't leave any stone unturned. She knew when to communicate and inform which I liked! Unlike other travel organizations, book with them and not hear from them again. You may think it's a tad expensive but I think it's worth every penny. Vietnam Honeymoon

Having not used a tour provider before, we chose to treat ourselves for our honeymoon. Off the back of some recommendations and good online reviews we opted with Audley. The initial process was incredible easy, we set up a call with Christian almost immediately. Within a week we had a draft itinerary in place. Following a couple more short calls it was fully booked. The whole experience was unbelievably easy and throughout it all Christian was friendly, funny and helpful. We were very happy with the whole booking experience and then when we got out to Vietnam it got even better. The hotels, guides and excursions were all fantastic. Everything was organised for us and the guides were all incredibly helpful. Which meant throughout the whole trip we could just relax and enjoy it, despite moving around to several different cities and hotels. It's a trip we'll remember for a long time and for that we couldn't thank Christian and the rest of the Audley team enough.

Flawless Experience

My wife and I turned to Audley Travel to book our tour of Scotland, and we approached the whole experience in a bygone, let-the-travel-agent-handle-the-arrangements manner. After two calls with the Audley representative, we had an itinerary that, at least on paper, matched our preferences. Then, on the first day of the trip, beginning at the local airport, everything fell into place… flawlessly. And everything that followed fell into place… flawlessly… for twelve days straight. We would simply show up, say our name, and… ta-dah… room reservation would be found or tickets would be found, and off we went. We did not have reason to use the local customer support (but knowing that it was there was a quiet comfort). More importantly, each accommodation, each tour, and each activity was perfectly matched to our preferences and our pace. We saw more, did more, and enjoyed ourselves more all thanks to the Audley representative’s talents.

Southafrica !

Extremely Disappointed with Swiss Travel

We saved up for our dream holiday to Costa Rica. After lots of research we chose Audley Travel to book our holiday through, they tailor make each holiday package to suit the individuals requirements, the holiday was well arranged by Audley Travel with good communications, staying at 5 different locations which all looked amazing. The problems all started when we arrived at San Jose Airport, we met the Swiss Travel Rep who led us to a mini van. The Rep stayed on the bus for all of 5 minutes while he gave us a quick explanation of what was going to happen..We were told the transfer time to the first location would take around 2 hours, it took over 4 hours which was totally unacceptable after an 11 hour flight, we arrived at La Selva Biological Station at about 10pm. When we woke up in the morning, we found out the lodge was about a mile walk away from the reception and breakfast area. We had zero communications from Swiss Travel during the whole holiday, we had an itinerary on an App that showed us which days we would be transferring to the next location but no one from Swiss Travel ever told us what time we were being collected, this happened at every location and was quite stressful. On the last day we had an internal flight shown on our itinerary App from Puerto Jiménez Airport to San Jose Airport. We were led to the small 10 seater plane and were pleased we made it after not knowing what time we were being collected from the last Lodge. We were sitting on the plane then an official looking person boarded and told us to get off because the flight hadn’t been paid for. This was unbelievable considering how much money we had paid for this holiday. After a long discussion between Swiss Travel and the flight officials were allowed back on the plane, 
We will NEVER use Audley Travel again if we know swiss Travel are involved, considering the amount of money we handed over for such a poor experience, we could have arranged this holiday ourselves for half the price and less stress. We would definitely NOT recommend anyone to use Audley Travel for an expensive holiday to Costa Rica if Swiss Travel are involved.

Our trip to Thailand "the land of smiles" was fabulous

Our Thailand trip was fabulous. With expert guidance from Saskia at Audley we visited golden temples, ancient ruins, vibrant markets (even one on a railway line!) and a variety of stunning landscapes. The smell and taste of Thai street food and fruit beyond imagination. The music of the rainforest- gibbons, birds and cicadas calling. The serenity of the hill tribe people. The poignant Burma Railway sites and the most beautiful cemetery. Fantastic tea tasting. Getting up close and personal with gorgeous elephants. Staying in a lovely selection of boutique hotels. I unhesitatingly recommend visiting "the land of smiles" Thailand with Audley to tailor the trip to your individual needs.

Amazing Galapagos

This is my sixth trip with Audley and once again Audley have fulfilled every part of the journey. I have had an amazing two weeks in The Galapagos which was put together by Caroline Revnell. From our first conversation and facetime call to the phone call a couple of days before departure nothing was too much trouble. The hard copy of the itinerary was admired much by fellow passengers on the two weeks aboard Yolita 11 and Audley was the topic of several conversations. (Perhaps more business will come your way) This was truly a holiday of a lifetime and it may be hard to top!!!! Thank you once again Audley and Caroline for providing a smooth and hassle free adventure.

Fantastic trip to Kerala in India

Fantastic trip to Kerala in India. Both main resorts I stayed in were amazing. Personal driver was friendly and knowledgeable. Upgraded myself to a Villa with a private pool at Marari Beach, which was worth doing. Altogether a relaxing holiday, rejuvenating my personal well-being with great food and lovely attentive resort service. Hannah who arranged my trip with Audley Travel was first class at her job, nothing was to much trouble.

Family Adventure in Vietnam

When we knew we had the opportunity to catch up with our daughter on her travels round the Far East, Audley helped us create the most amazing two week adventure in Vietnam. Wonderful 10* service and support

The best travel service in the world! Not only did they plan our trip with great attention to detail, providing a lot of extra valuable travel advice and tips, they really showed their expertise when things went wrong. When my husband was rushed into hospital while away, their wonderful team were there supporting and advising me every step of the way. They continued to keep in touch and help me on our repatriation to the UK in a way that shows a level of customer care beyond anything we have ever experienced before. Vietnam Honeymoon

Having not used a tour provider before, we chose to treat ourselves for our honeymoon. Off the back of some recommendations and good online reviews we opted with Audley. The initial process was incredible easy, we set up a call with Christian almost immediately. Within a week we had a draft itinerary in place. Following a couple more short calls it was fully booked. The whole experience was unbelievably easy and throughout it all Christian was friendly, funny and helpful. We were very happy with the whole booking experience and then when we got out to Vietnam it got even better. The hotels, guides and excursions were all fantastic. Everything was organised for us and the guides were all incredibly helpful. Which meant throughout the whole trip we could just relax and enjoy it, despite moving around to several different cities and hotels. It's a trip we'll remember for a long time and for that we couldn't thank Christian and the rest of the Audley team enough.

Southafrica !

Southafrica ! We booked a 3 week trip to Cape Town, garden route, winelands and safari, all tailor made to our needs as a family. New Zealand Trip of a Lifetime…

The New Zealand trip had been on our agenda pre Covid and we used Audley to help plan our self drive itinerary. Our agent, Amy, listened and understood what we were looking for and offered knowledgeable advice based on her personal experience. I can't fault Audley…

Three perfect trips with Audley

This latest trip to Vietnam was the third time that we have used Audley Travel. In all three occasions we were listened to, so that they could try to put together a holiday that suited us. They were always quick to respond to any issues that cropped up during our holidays one one occasion they even phoned us in China! This company is not the cheapest but they are in our opinion the best that we have found and we will not hesitate in using them again for a great travel experience.

Audley gave a us a life changing experience!

My mother and I (a female 24 year old) had an amazing 2 week holiday with Audley Travel. Fabulous trip to Mexico

I had a wonderful itinerary put together for me by Phoebe, the Mexico specialist, only 3 weeks before flying off. Phoebe and Audely were increcibly can-do, pro-active and up-front about what they could achieve last-minute and given I was going away peak season. The trip ended up being more epxensive than I had anticipated, but the trips, hotels and service that I got made it all worthwhile. And when I got ill during the holiday I was in constant contact with their local operating partner who were incredibly resposive and helpful I thoroughly recommend!

Exceptional

We had a fabulous experience using Audley travel to arrange our honeymoon. We had Suzi look after us who was very knowledgeable, easy to chat with and understood exactly what we wanted to get from our trip. From our first enquiry to getting back home, the level of care and attention was exceptional. We really felt looked after. The trip was so well organised and lifted a lot of the stress we sometime experience when we have organised our own trips in the past. Extremely Disappointed with Swiss Travel

We saved up for our dream holiday to Costa Rica. After lots of research we chose Audley Travel to book our holiday through, they tailor make each holiday package to suit the individuals requirements, the holiday was well arranged by Audley Travel with good communications, staying at 5 different locations which all looked amazing. The problems all started when we arrived at San Jose Airport, we met the Swiss Travel Rep who led us to a mini van. The Rep stayed on the bus for all of 5 minutes while he gave us a quick explanation of what was going to happen..We were told the transfer time to the first location would take around 2 hours, it took over 4 hours which was totally unacceptable after an 11 hour flight, we arrived at La Selva Biological Station at about 10pm. When we woke up in the morning, we found out the lodge was about a mile walk away from the reception and breakfast area. We had zero communications from Swiss Travel during the whole holiday, we had an itinerary on an App that showed us which days we would be transferring to the next location but no one from Swiss Travel ever told us what time we were being collected, this happened at every location and was quite stressful. On the last day we had an internal flight shown on our itinerary App from Puerto Jiménez Airport to San Jose Airport. We were led to the small 10 seater plane and were pleased we made it after not knowing what time we were being collected from the last Lodge. We were sitting on the plane then an official looking person boarded and told us to get off because the flight hadn’t been paid for. This was unbelievable considering how much money we had paid for this holiday. After a long discussion between Swiss Travel and the flight officials were allowed back on the plane, 
We will NEVER use Audley Travel again if we know swiss Travel are involved, considering the amount of money we handed over for such a poor experience, we could have arranged this holiday ourselves for half the price and less stress. We would definitely NOT recommend anyone to use Audley Travel for an expensive holiday to Costa Rica if Swiss Travel are involved.

Trip of a lifetime

Audley helped us to organise the trip of a lifetime - 3 months visiting Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, New Zealand and the South West USA. All 3 country specialists we dealt with, our lead consultant Amy for NZ, Anna for SE Asia and Shannon for the USA were so helpful in making suggestions of places to visit we hadn’t thought of, coming up with an outline itinerary within our budget and tweaking things over the course of several lengthy calls so we ended up with the perfect trip. We had the most amazing holiday, logistically everything went incredibly smoothly and the quality of the places we stayed in and the guides who assisted us were evidence of Audley’s attention to detail. We highly recommend Audley and will certainly be using them again ourselves - we already have one or two ideas!
