CONCERT REVIEW: THE AUSTRALIAN PINK FLOYD Is A Musical Time Machine That Uncannily Spotlights The Magic Of FLOYD’s Timeless Songs (August 8th, 2023)

australian pink floyd tour 2022 canada

Closing in now on 56 years of age, my bucket list of live acts to see has grown progressively smaller. Some acts, such as The Beatles , Jimi Hendrix and Elvis , will remain forever on that missed list. But perhaps the one I regret most missing in the days of my youth is the mighty Pink Floyd . Even as a young lad, I was fascinated and captivated by the wonderfully weird cover art by Storm Thorgerson . The band’s sound, too, had a remarkably unique timbre, with the emotionally drenched guitar work and soothing voice of David Gilmour colliding with the awkwardly angular bass lines and edgy vocals of Roger Waters . They created musical tension on tape, and interpersonal tension in real life, leading to the band’s division and ultimate demise. With the passing of Richard Wright , the ship of seeing the authentic Pink Floyd definitively sailed off into the night.

Seeing The Australian Pink Floyd Show in Denver, therefore, was never going to substitute for the real thing. But damn if it didn’t come pretty dang close! Not that anyone on stage had any physical resemblance to the original members, but the sound…the light show…the vibe. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with just enough Aussie modifications to add some visual humor to the gig. The crowd was a mature bunch, some clearly ready to transport back to their younger days of drug-infused classic rock. Judging from their response, The Australian Pink Floyd Show successfully provided a musical time machine that spotlighted the fantastic music and creative visuals that cemented Floyd’s reputation as a stellar live act in the 70s and 80s.

australian pink floyd tour 2022 canada

The first set showcased the entire “Dark Side of the Moon” album, celebrating is uncanny 50 year as the third best-selling studio album of all time, played in sequential order. While I generally feel like I never need to hear the overplayed songs of that record ever again, the live renditions were really well done, with the backup trio of Lorelei McBroom , Emily Lynn and Lara Smile s adding valuable layers of vocal sheen. Grant one additional point towards authenticity, since McBroom toured with the original Pink Floyd on the “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” and “Delicate Sound of Thunder”  tours. As for the rest of the members on stage, they served the song rather than drawing any particular attention to themselves.

australian pink floyd tour 2022 canada

The spectacular light show enhanced the “Dark Side of the Moon” performance tremendously, with images of Putin , Trump and other targets of liberals gracing the screen during the “lunatics on the grass” section. The round video screen, with multi-color spotlights rounding the frame morphed into a multitude of visual spectacles that were pure eye candy supporting the sonically pristine audio. One needn’t have dabbled in drugs to find the show quite a trip. In concluding the record, the band leapt into “On the Turning Away” from 1987’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” album, which did not have Roger Waters ’ involvement. The song slotted in so well it simply solidified the legitimacy of the post Waters Floyd . Set one wrapped up with the anthemic “Another Brick in the Wall,” with an eye-catching inflatable teacher character towering massively over the band on stage with the bizarre Floyd -esque art style fully intact. “Hey, teacher! Leave those kids alone!”

australian pink floyd tour 2022 canada

After a 15-minute intermission, the natural choice of “In the Flesh” called the crowd back into its rock trance as the band expertly explored the finer moments of the “Wish You Were Here” album. The dramatically building “High Hopes” proved to be an emotionally poignant highlight of the second set. And from there, the visual and musical intensity just continued to build. The stunning visuals of “Pigs” were entertaining and captivating and the terrifying opening of “One of These Days” gave way to a raucous prog instrumental romp that was absolutely on point, with green lasers flying everywhere. The set wrapped up with an energetic version of “Run Like Hell” that came off as an upbeat call for the entire hall to clap and dance. If that had been all, it would have been plenty. But the obvious choice for an encore, “Comfortably Numb,” took the crowd over the top with its gloriously reproduced guitar solo and vocal harmonies.

australian pink floyd tour 2022 canada

The music of Pink Floyd is so iconic, it’s probably very difficult to recreate without disappointment. But hats off to the lads from down under, who after playing more gigs than the actual band themselves, have fine-tuned their performance into a very well-oiled machine. While one might take exception to the lack of spontaneity and risk in the show, the simple truth is that they’ve crafted a wonderful tribute that evokes much of the spirit and vibe of the original act, and it is certainly worth seeing if it rolls through your town. Gigantic bouncing inflatable kangaroo and all!

With over 30 years of history, the world’s biggest, best and greatest Pink Floyd tribute show continues to delight its global fan base.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show emerged in 1988 from Adelaide, Australia. The band, led by guitarist Steve Mac is famous for replicating Pink Floyd’s original shows. The concerts closely resemble the original band’s atmosphere, including executing the same visual presentations, lasers, and large display panels. Mac, who plays guitar for Australian Pink Floyd Show, uses the same guitar rig as Pink Floyd’s original guitarist, David Gilmour. In 1994, Gilmour went to an Australian Pink Floyd show, which resulted in an invitation for the tribute band to attend Pinky Floyd’s The Division Bell Tour end-of-the-tour party. The band also notably performed at Gilmour’s 50th birthday party in 1996.

Australian Pink Floyd show later introduced state-of-the-art quadrophonic sound and 3D stereoscopic projection into their performances. Apart from the band’s incredible musicianship and accuracy in performing the music, they’ve also made the show an incredible experience for Pinky Floy fans to relish.

Brit Floyd “World Tour 2022”: “Echoes” Takes Center Stage

Article contributed by sam a. marshall | published on thursday, march 17, 2022.

Fans of the legendary British progressive rock band Pink Floyd will have numerous opportunities to hear their music performed live in 2022. Of course, they will be able to catch original Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason showcasing their classic songs with Roger's solo tour of the U.S. and Nick's Europe tour later this year. But also, a small handful of seasoned Floyd-themed bands, including the international touring unit Brit Floyd , have major 2022 tours on deck in North America. So much Floyd, so little time!

Brit Floyd – now with more than ten years of road experience under their belt – have another fully-booked year ahead in 2022. And, in fact, the North American leg of their “World Tour 2022” is already under way, having just kicked off on the East Coast in mid-March. Then, after more than 60 dates in the U.S. and Canada, the band will shift to Europe in Fall 2022 for a clutch of about 25 shows in various countries.

First having come onto the touring scene in 2011, Brit Floyd have become a perennial favorite among Floyd fans worldwide, and for multiple reasons. First, they load their shows with many obvious, must-hear PF songs. As part of the total experience, they also replicate PF’s dramatic lighting and multimedia effects with their own twists. But, most important, the shows stay musically fresh through rotation of non-hit album tracks, from tour to tour. In short, nothing is off the table with Brit Floyd.

According to the band’s founder, lead guitarist and musical director Damian Darlington, audiences can always count on Brit Floyd for chunky servings of favorites – such as “Money,” “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,“ “Learning to Fly,” “Run Like Hell,” “Wish You Were Here” and “One of These Days.” Yet, adds Darlington, who helps to craft the band’s set lists, serious fans can expect their fair share of deep Floyd, too.

“Obviously, we can’t leave folks behind by going too deep,” says Darlington, noting that the BF repertoire reflects all Floyd eras, from the first album with songs by founder Syd Barrett through the post-Roger Waters years.

“We’ve performed quite a few [pre-Dark Side] songs, such as ‘Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun’,” he says, explaining BF’s focus on variety and the element of surprise. In fact, over the past 11 years, they have revisited nearly every PF album, including Floyd’s 2014 swan song The Endless River. “People who attend more than one tour hear new things each time. And it’s more interesting for us, too.”

During their earlier tours, Brit Floyd had followed the crowd-pleasing route, performing classic albums, including Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, in their entirety. Yet, in time, BF have taken a more thematic approach of rotating LP album “sides” or featuring longer, multi-section epics, including “Dogs” from PF’s 1977 Animals album. And, when the time is right, they have even been known to perform that most celebrated and desired epic in Pink Floyd history, “Echoes,” from the 1971 album Meddle.

Fortunately for fans of this classic Floyd track, as Damian Darlington points out, “Echoes” will once again take center stage in 2022.

“It’s too wonderful of a piece of music to leave lying around too long,” says Darlington, noting that Brit Floyd first performed this dramatic set piece on their 2011 debut tour, then revisited it in 2016. Just two years ago, he adds, BF activated the song again to mark the song’s 50th anniversary on the 2020-21 tours. So now, the anniversary celebration of “Echoes” continues into another year.

“It’s such an emotional journey, with its delicate passages, the ‘funky’ jam, and the mysterious [sounding] middle section,” he says, expressing his personal admiration for the multi-part Floyd masterpiece. “Some [newer] Floyd fans at a show may not recognize it at first, but ‘Echoes’ always makes a big impression on audiences.”

Darlington, who oversees all aspects of Brit Floyd’s production, says that recent solo shows by former Floyd bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and guitarist David Gilmour have triggered ideas for updating BF’s shows. That is, when his own “night job” hasn’t gotten in the way.

“I did see Roger’s production of The Wall [in 2010] but missed his last tour, since our schedules overlapped so tightly. We work a lot! But I also got to see David in 2016 and Nick in 2018. You hear things and think, ‘Ohh, we should add that one.’ For example, Nick’s band did ‘Fearless’ [from Meddle]. Definitely a nice addition. So we added it for 2019, and audiences reacted very well.”

Much has been going on with Brit Floyd and much lies ahead, Darlington summarizes. As he notes, BF recently broke new ground, with a brief, first-ever tour of Japan, in late winter of 2019. And they periodically document tours visually with DVD releases, such as the very successful Live at Red Rocks set, although a new DVD has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, he adds, fans can expect more set list experimentation down the road.

This could even include adding “a solo song each” from the post-Floyd careers of David Gilmour and Roger Waters, he says, to add a “sense of their continuing creative legacies” beyond Pink Floyd.

“This is wonderful music to perform, and demand for it is strong all around the world,” says Darlington, who had spent 17 years in his band’s other major competitor, the Australian Pink Floyd Show, before launching Brit Floyd himself in 2011. “And there’s no sign of it stopping anytime soon.”
