Report: This is how much you should expect airfare to cost for your summer travel

You may want to travel domestically this summer.

Julie Scagell

Thinking about booking a weekend getaway or a week’s long, unplugged, get-me-out-of-here-right-this-minute trip, the first thing on your mind is probably, “How much is this going to set me back?” It can often be a deal breaker on how long you can go, where you are traveling, and if you can afford to go at all.

How much will a trip cost this summer?

Why the increase.

While the airlines have certainly changed their flight prices post-COVID, the cost of airfare for this summer may surprise you. Travel booking site Hopper came out with a report that breaks down how much flyers can expect to pay based on location, and it also includes some good intel on hotels and car rentals as well. The bottom line: It’s going to cost you to unwind. Cheap airfare will be hard to come by.

According to their report, average round-trip air ticket prices to Europe increased over last year to the tune of $1,167 versus $850 last year. If Asia is on your bucket list , the news is equally dismal. The average round-trip ticket is coming in at $1,817, compared to only $917 during the summer of 2020. Even going to Canada will cost you more, 2% higher than last year and up 11% over 2019.

  • Do you need a passport to go to Mexico? The requirements vary depending on your mode of travel
  • Before you travel, make sure you do this to your Google Maps app first

Current domestic airfare is a little bit easier on the purse strings averaging $306 per ticket, which is down 19% from last year. If cost is an issue, staying in the U.S. may be a good plan for summer 2023.

“If you haven’t booked summer plans yet, you’ll want to do so as soon as possible. Prices are expected to rise in the coming weeks. Now is the sweet spot for getting a good deal,” stated Hopper’s chief economist Haley Berg in a statement . The reason? High demand and limited airline capacity, said Hopper. Staffing issues at certain airports also play a role, but that is to a lesser extent.

“Airfare for domestic summer trips is currently trending below 2022 levels, but remains higher than pre-pandemic (2019) pricing,” Berg continued. “Airfare for June and July trips are (approximately) 7% below 2022 prices and are expected to remain steady until they spike in the two to three weeks before departure dates, as is usual. Airfare is (approximately) 16% higher than 2019 levels.”

The time you go this summer also makes a difference. Air tickets will be at their most expensive for 4th of July weekend trips this year, “with domestic trips averaging $349 per ticket, up 17% from 2019 but down 17% from their peak at $420 per ticket last summer,” according to the report.

Our advice would be to book as soon as possible, be flexible on your dates of travel, and have a little patience during the booking process. Don’t be married to one airline over another, and don’t forget about the budget airlines like Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines, which always have decent deals to a number of U.S. locations.

A month-by-month guide to the cheapest US domestic flights

Jordan Waller

We don't need to tell you that airfares have been on a wild ride in recent years, but there are still plenty of good prices to be found — especially if you're looking at domestic destinations.

We asked Skyscanner to share its data on the cheapest destinations, on average, you can fly to in the U.S. during different parts of the year. You'd be surprised at what made the ranks, particularly during usually peak tourist periods.

Below, we break down the top 10 cheapest domestic destinations to fly to year-round and the ones that regularly cost less at different times throughout the year.

If you want to travel farther afield, check out our month-by-month guide to the cheapest international destinations.

All pricing is taken from economy-class, round-trip bookings made on Skyscanner for travel in 2022.

Which destinations in the US are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

As a whole, Florida is the cheapest state to fly to year-round, with good prices on various destinations, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa. However, the cheapest overall period to travel to Florida is between January and March, and the most expensive is October to December.

If you're in the mood to flutter your cash and hit the Strip, Las Vegas can be surprisingly well-priced all year. Meanwhile, Philadelphia and New Orleans also regularly offer good prices and can be great cultural trip destinations.

Cheapest places to fly in the US from January through March

If you want to start your year with a little sun, you can get some cheap flights to Florida during this period, according to Skyscanner.

While January is one of the coldest months to visit Florida , temperatures are still mild and pleasant; temperatures get increasingly warmer through February and March, and the average sea temperature is around 75.2 degrees — perfect for swimming as long as you don't need the water to be hot-tub like. However, note that March is when spring break revelers descend upon the state, so things can get more raucous in certain areas.

average round trip flight cost 2023

Based on Skyscanner's data for average economy flight costs, the period from January to March also shows the cheapest average prices for flights to Las Vegas and New York. However, note that both destinations, especially New York , can be chilly early in the year.

In Vegas, the first three months bring mild to occasionally chilly days, with temperatures dropping considerably during the evenings. It does, however, start to warm up in March, which can be the perfect time to visit if you can't deal with the heat during the summer months; it can also be one of the busier months with events such as March Madness filling up the sportsbooks.

Cheapest places to fly in the US from April through June

You can still get great deals on Florida flights during these months, but you'll also be dealing with a much more humid destination than earlier in the year. As you get into the warmer months, parts of Florida also begin to have afternoon thunderstorms on most days. Additionally, June marks the official beginning of hurricane season.

Although slightly more expensive on average for flights than earlier in the year, this is a great period to visit Las Vegas to take advantage of warm weather and fewer crowds.

Springtime can be a great time to visit New Orleans. Be aware that accommodation prices can be high due to the smorgasbord of cultural happenings — including the French Quarter Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo — in April and May.

Related: The best hotels in New Orleans, from the French Quarter to the Garden District

If you've always wanted to visit Music City, then May and June are great options for a trip to Nashville. During this time, the weather is often pleasant and much more forgiving than in late summer, which can also bring unpredictable thunderstorms.

Cheapest places to fly in the US from July through September

According to Skyscanner's data, Myrtle Beach is one of the cheapest destinations to visit between July and September. However, this period also falls within the region's hurricane season, which typically lasts from June to November.

September is one of the cheapest times to visit Salt Lake City , and not just for flights. This is typically the city's lower-demand season, so you can often get great deals on accommodations. Also, with the kids back in school, it'll likely be less busy. However, if you're looking for a chance to ski, you're naturally much better off visiting between December and March.

If you're a heatseeker of the highest order, July is one of the hottest times to visit Florida. However, the heat doesn't do much to keep visitors away as the summertime can see an influx of tourists while kids are out of school

Cheapest places to fly in the US from October through December

If you're looking for winter sun, you can find good prices on airfares to Phoenix between October and December.

If you're headed that way, we'd recommend visiting Sedona, Arizona, which is majestic and has great weather later in the year. Phoenix also has an array of great resorts and spas, including the nearby TPG (and Bill Marriott) favorite JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa .

average round trip flight cost 2023

According to Skyscanner, you can get good prices on flights to Seattle during this period, but if you take the trip, be prepared for rain (and occasionally snow).

You can also get some of the best weather in Philadelphia in October before the weather gets much colder. October can get pretty busy and is a popular time for weddings in the city, whereas the crowds start to thin around December.

And while Austin doesn't typically see harsh winters, it does have harsh, hot summers, which makes the late fall months a great time to head to the Miraval all-inclusive resort, take in a Longhorn football game or enjoy one of the festivals that come to town that time of year.

Related: 9 best things to do in Austin

Bottom line

You can get great fares on domestic travel in the U.S. throughout the year, but if you're savvy and know where to look, you can always find an even better deal. However, be sure to do your research first. Sometimes airfares may seem great, but you may be traveling to a destination during a period known for bad weather — either exorbitantly hot or windy and rainy (think hurricane season).

If you choose carefully, though, you could see a side of the country you've never seen before and save considerable money on flights, compared to traveling internationally.

Expedia’s 2023 Air Travel Hacks Report: U.S. travelers can save on airfare by booking and traveling on this day to avoid flight delays

As we head into the holidays and a brand-new year, many travelers have already expanded their travel plans and aspirations. But, if we’ve learned anything from 2022, traveling isn’t always so simple, as we encountered unpredictable flight prices, delays and cancellations. Thankfully, Expedia has released its 2023 Air Travel Hacks Report, providing data-backed tips to help save travelers time and money.

The main takeaway? Plan wisely by taking advantage of price alerts, as timing is KEY when it comes to hacking air travel.

average round trip flight cost 2023

Air travel is on the runway to recovery

Average ticket prices began to surpass 2019 levels in March and April this year, driven by the rebound in demand and lowering of travel restrictions. After peaking during the summer months, airfare prices dropped again for fall and are expected to rise again for the busy holiday period 1 . While overall capacity (airplane seats and flights available for a given route) has increased over the course of the year, according the  Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC)  and OAG’s global flight data platform , it still sits below 2019 levels as airlines work to fully restore operations to pre-pandemic levels 2 .

From when to book to maximizing loyalty perks, here’s Expedia’s guide to hacking travel in 2023.

When to book

Book on a Sunday to save up to 15% on average 3 Travelers who book on Sundays instead of Fridays tend to save, on average, around 5% on domestic flights and 15% on international flights. While the best day of the week to book has been Sunday for the past four years, travelers saved 5% more on average in 2022 compared to 2021.

Book at least a month before domestic flights to save 10% on average 4 The sweet spot for snagging the best price on domestic flights falls between 28 – 35 days before departure – so about a month in advance of travel. Travelers that booked during that period saved 10% on average compared to those who waited until the last minute (0 – 2 weeks out).

For those who prefer to plan further in advance, booking domestic airfares any earlier than 113 days out has historically been more expensive, but may ensure you get your preferred flights. Domestic airfares have been more expensive in the 3.5 – 6 months before departure, so try not to book early.

Book 6 months before international flights to save 10% on average 4 Travelers that book around six months in advance of international travel saved 10% on average compared to those who waited until two months out or less to book.

Book with confidence using Price Tracking and Predictions on the Expedia app Last-minute flight deals are increasingly rare, so it’s smart to opt into price alerts on the Expedia app and get notified when fares are expected to be at their lowest – essentially taking the guesswork out of deciding when to book. Expedia’s Price Tracking and Predictions feature uses machine learning to identify patterns in historical data to forecast price changes, factoring in time of year, route details, trip length and more to help travelers pinpoint the best time to book. *

How to avoid flight disruptions

Depart before 3pm to reduce chance of cancellations 5 Travelers that want the best chance for smooth travel should aim for early flights. Based on year-to-date flight status data, flights that depart after 3pm have the highest chance of being cancelled – a 50% higher chance, on average, than those that depart earlier in the day.

Travel off-peak 6 Data shows that avoiding the peak travel periods can have more benefits than just cost-savings. Historically, flight delays were shorter during March and April compared to the busy summer months, dropping by about 40 minutes. As summer wound down, delays began to shorten again, making fall an appealing time for air travel.

Overall, airlines have steadily improved their services, with total cancellations dropping from more than 7% early in the year to around 3% in August. The trend is expected to continue in a positive direction for travelers, meaning 2023 should see a significantly reduced risk of flight disruptions.

When to travel

Depart on a Wednesday to save up to 15% on average 7   In general, travelers who started a trip on a Wednesday, versus the beginning of the week (a Sunday or a Monday) saved, on average, 15% on domestic flights. For international flights, travelers who departed on a Wednesday instead of during the weekend (a Sunday or a Saturday) saved 10% on average.

How to save on every trip

When it just isn’t possible to follow every travel hack, there are still a few easy ways to knock hundreds of dollars off your next trip.

  • Book your airfare, hotel and car hire at the same time on Expedia. Otherwise known as bundling, this can instantly unlock hundreds of dollars in savings.
  • Sign up for loyalty and frequent flier programs or risk leaving money on the table. Expedia members earn Rewards points for every booking they make, which can be redeemed as dollars off on their next trip. **
  • Earn air miles on top of Expedia points by entering your mileage plan number at checkout. It’s an easy way to double-dip and rack up travel rewards even faster.

Average cost of flying in the U.S.

average round trip flight cost 2023

Key takeaways

The average cost of flying domestically in the U.S. is influenced by several factors, including when you book the flight, when you plan to fly out, what airport you’re flying out of and even the current cost of jet fuel — not to mention general travel demand and airline staffing issues.

For the top 10 busiest airports in the U.S., the average ticket costs range from $261.63 to $465.68, according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

This year, travel companies expect demand growth to slow slightly, and airfare prices are expected to decrease from the levels seen in 2023.

Nearly two out of every three adults planned to take a summer vacation in 2023 — up slightly from the number who planned trips in 2022, according to  Bankrate survey data . But how do last year’s travel plans compare to this year?

Instead of expecting more of the “revenge travel” plans that fueled high growth in 2023, many travel companies are expecting that growth to slow down, according to data gathered by Reuters and travel companies like Expedia . But while travel companies may not see as much growth this year as in 2023, they’re still expecting travel demand to remain strong.

What those vacations look like and how they’re paid for, however, could look different than last year. Twenty-seven percent of Americans are willing to take on debt in order to travel this year, according to a Bankrate survey on discretionary spending .

If you’re still thinking about how you’re going to pay for your own summer travel plans, you’ll have an easier time planning with access to realistic numbers. We’ll go over the average cost of domestic airfare in the U.S. and the cheapest time to fly, as well as other pricing statistics and travel tips that might help you avoid those sky-high ticket prices.

Average cost of domestic airfare in the U.S.

If you’re asking how much is a plane ticket, here’s a look at the average cost of airfare for domestic flights out of the top 10 busiest airports in the U.S. in Q4 of 2023, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

Airline price statistics

Bankrate insights

Prices for airline tickets decreased by 7.1 percent between March 2023 and March 2024, going from an average of $286.81 to an average of $266.48. ( Bureau of Labor Statistics )

Airline ticket prices are still up slightly compared to pre-pandemic prices but are much closer, with just a 2.6 percent increase between March 2019 and March 2024 ( BLS )

The most expensive airport to fly out of for U.S. domestic travel is Guam (GUM) with an average cost of $1,526.51 ( Bureau of Transportation Statistics )

The least expensive airport to fly out of for U.S. domestic travel is Fort Collins/Loveland, CO (FNL) with an average cost of $83 ( Bureau of Transportation Statistics )

The average cost of a “good deal” U.S. domestic round-trip airline ticket for April 2024 is $290, which is up just 1.7 percent from 2023 prices ( Hopper )

27 percent of U.S. adults are willing to take on debt in order to travel this year ( Bankrate )

Average flight cost changes in the U.S.

A number of factors determine airfare prices in the U.S., including the flight’s distance, the time of year you’ll be traveling, the cost of fuel and your time of purchase.

While the average cost of flying in the U.S. fell during the pandemic in 2020, travelers booking domestic flights are still seeing higher costs compared to historical flight prices — although that gap is much smaller now than in 2023.

Last year, travel demand, jet fuel prices and airline staffing challenges contributed to the high ticket prices. While some staffing challenges still remain, many travel companies are in a better place to meet demand this year, especially since they’re not expecting as much travel demand growth as last year. Jet fuel prices are also down 4 percent from April 2023, according to Q2 2024 data from Hopper . Prices are still 34 percent higher than they were in 2019, however.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average cost of domestic flight travel is now closer to 2019 levels, as you can see in this table:

5 most (and least) expensive origin cities for domestic airfare

Plane ticket prices vary greatly across the country; discrepancies that can be chalked up to a number of factors, including the difference in the number of airlines that serve that particular airport and overall demand for flights. It will likely cost you more to fly into a smaller airport with less foot traffic than one of the nation’s major airports.

So how much does a plane ticket cost? Here’s a look at the top five most expensive airports to fly out of versus the top five most affordable airports, based on how much you can expect to pay for airfare. All data is from the Q4 2023 report of the  Bureau of Transportation Statistics .

Top 5 most expensive airports

Top 5 most affordable airports, when is the cheapest time to fly.

January and February are the least expensive months of the year to fly, according to a  2024 study conducted by CheapAir . Flights in November and July, on the other hand, are the most expensive. For summer travel, planning for an August departure date could help you rake in more savings compared to flying in June or July.

As for the cheapest day of the week to fly, the middle of the week — so a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday — tends to be more affordable. In fact, according to CheapAir, choosing a Tuesday or Wednesday flight could save you an average of $99 to $102 per ticket, compared to flying on Sunday. Thursday is also considered a better choice than Friday through Sunday when it comes to flying. Departing on a Thursday can also be beneficial, saving travelers an average of $52 when compared to Sunday.

As for the weekend, flying out on a Saturday will typically be cheaper than flying out on a Sunday or Monday.

How to save on air travel

Despite high prices, there are still a few strategies you can use to trim your overall costs when booking a flight. Those strategies include to:

Opt for a travel card . The  top travel credit cards can help you earn valuable rewards to put toward flights, hotel stays and other travel-related expenses. If you already have a travel card, see if there are any rewards you can redeem to maximize your savings. You may also be able to cut down on other costs like travel insurance since many top travel cards come with  numerous travel protections .

Book ahead . Timing is everything and can translate to major savings when purchasing airline tickets. The best time to book a domestic flight is between 74 to 21 days before your travel date, according to the same study conducted by CheapAir. Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report offers similar guidance, with the recommendation of booking a domestic flight at least 28 days before departure.

Set price alerts . Monitoring flight prices can be a job in and of itself. Automate where you can. Sites like Skyscanner, Hopper, Kayak and Google Flights let you set price alerts and will notify you when the airline ticket you’re hoping to purchase drops below a certain price point.

Be flexible . Not only does the timing of your ticket purchase matter, but when you choose to fly is key to saving money as well. When you start planning your trip, see if there’s any flexibility in when you plan to venture off. If you can travel during the middle of the week or on a Saturday, you may save a considerable amount on airfare.

The bottom line

With a busy travel season ahead, it’s important to make your travel plans early and keep in mind that flexibility is key when scoring the lowest fare. Search around your area to see if flying out of a different airport could help you save. And if you have some wiggle room in your schedule, see if changing your travel dates could cut down your costs as well.

Lastly, set yourself up for success by allowing for enough time to do your research, monitoring and comparing deals and looking for  ways to redeem credit card points so that you can rake in extra savings.

Bankrate’s Travel Toolkit can help you find even more ways to save as you plan for your next trip, whether you’re flying domestically to visit family or flying internationally to go on that big vacation abroad.

Travel trends for 2023

average round trip flight cost 2023

Excited to get your 2023 travel plans going? Same. We’ve crunched the numbers on what we think will be the top trends in travel for next year – because what’s the point of having all this travel data if we don’t share it? From the most affordable destinations to those places we think will be “in,” these are the travel trends you need to know for the year ahead.

Trending destinations.

When it came to 2022 trips, travelers were more than ready – destinations around the country and the world saw tourism coming back. The emergence of “revenge travel” was also too real and there are no signs of it stopping in 2023. So where is everyone headed this year? We’ve got a few educated guesses.

average round trip flight cost 2023

Region of the year: Asia and South Pacific.

Snapshots in London, Paris and the Amalfi Coast flooded our feeds in 2022 as US travelers were returning to travel. In 2023, we expect to see travelers branch out to destinations in Asia and the South Pacific. Based on our data, here are the places that we anticipate will generate buzz:

Top 10 trending destinations for 2023

  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam : Searches were up 769% year over year
  • Taipei City, Taiwan : Searches were up 289% year over year
  • Auckland, New Zealand : Searches were up 272% year over year
  • Singapore : Searches were up 201% year over year
  • Hong Kong : Searches were up 190% year over year
  • Melbourne, Australia : Searches were up 167% year over year
  • Bangkok, Thailand : Searches were up 166% year over year
  • Tokyo, Japan : Searches were up 150% year over year
  • Sydney, Australia : Searches were up 145% year over year
  • Tel Aviv, Israel : Searches were up 134% year over year

Our takeaways: Travelers will be flocking to bucket list destinations in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand in 2023, likely because these destinations have (finally) re-opened to visitors. Already have your eyes on flights? We’ve got new data on when to book – keep scrolling for the details.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Which places are cheaper? You’re getting warmer…

Skipped out in 2022 because of audacious flight prices? We hear you – fares this past year were out of control (which might bleed into 2023 too… but more on that later). That’s why we took a look at our numbers to see which destinations are seeing the biggest dips in flight prices:

Destinations trending cheaper vs. last year

  • Melbourne, Australia : 10% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Bora Bora : 9% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Copenhagen, Denmark : 8% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Sydney, Australia : 2% YoY price decrease in airfare
  • Fiji : 2% YoY price decrease in airfare

Destinations trending cheaper vs. 3 years ago

  • Warsaw, Poland : 10% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Bora Bora : 8% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Mykonos, Greece : 7% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Lisbon, Portugal : 4% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare
  • Bogotá, Colombia : 2% Yo3Y price decrease in airfare

Our takeaways: You might have noticed that Melbourne and Sydney are also on the top-trending destinations list. While flights there are generally expensive, 2023 will see lower-than-usual prices… so this could be your time to plan a trip “down unda.” Additionally, if you’ve had your eyes on Bora Bora, our numbers show flights there are less pricey than they’ve been in years.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change in airfare, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered. To find year over 3 year percent change in airfare, the same search dates in 2019 and travel dates in 2020 were considered. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Staying within a budget? Here’s where to go.

For flights that don’t drain your bank account, we’d recommend a city adventure that’s closer to home. Based on our data, airfare to these popular destinations in and around the US are where you can see more… for less:

Destinations around North America seeing the lowest fares on average

  • New York, NY, US : $337
  • Chicago, IL, US : $343
  • Austin, TX, US : $360
  • Atlanta, GA, US : $363
  • Houston, TX, US : $365
  • Nashville, TN, US : $365
  • Guadalajara, Mexico : $369
  • Toronto, Canada : $375
  • Raleigh, NC, US : $375
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL, US : $376

Want to make use of your recently-renewed passport without paying a hefty price? It’s possible – based on our data, here are some places to consider for international travel on a budget in 2023:

Destinations outside of North America seeing the lowest fares on average

  • Bogotá, Colombia : $534
  • Medellín, Colombia : $542
  • Guayaquil, Ecuador : $642
  • Lima, Peru : $691
  • Lisbon, Portugal : $708
  • Quito, Ecuador : $712
  • Reykjavik, Iceland : $718
  • Warsaw, Poland : $747
  • Copenhagen, Denmark : $749
  • Krakow, Poland : $766

Our takeaways: For those staying closer to home in 2023, we recommend pursuing popular cities in the US, Canada and Mexico. For international excursions, consider flying to destinations in South America and Northern Europe to stay under $800.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023 with the lowest average airfare. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Flight trends.

The searches continue..

Inflation made its mark (or… dent) in 2022 – and many of us have felt that effect on our budgets. But travelers have continued to search for flights… even if it means shelling out more money than usual. Based on our numbers, here are 3 things we noticed about search behavior and what these trends could mean for 2023:

  • Interest in travel isn’t going anywhere. It’s clear travelers aren’t willing to sacrifice their long-awaited vacations. Both domestic and international flight searches are up for 2023 compared to 2022 (25% for domestic and 64% for international).*
  • Solo travel is on the rise. Travelers are ready to find themselves (and their new favorite destinations). Searches for single-person flights are up 36% for travel in 2023 compared to 2022.**
  • Wanted: more legroom. Travelers are looking to upgrade. Though all flight classes are seeing an increase in search interest, one class got more attention: premium economy. Searches for these seats are up 64% for travel in 2023 compared to 2022.***

Our takeaways: Flight searches in 2022 for travel in 2023 were up 46% versus searches in 2021 for travel in 2022 – which could be telling for travel demand in 2023. Travelers continue to plan trips both domestically and abroad, with no signs of stopping.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023. To find year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were considered.

**KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for one traveler for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

***KAYAK US considered round-trip flights for different airfare classes for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

Airfare prices are reaching for the sky.

average round trip flight cost 2023

We won’t sugarcoat it – the increase that we saw in 2022 for flights will likely carry over into 2023. Does that mean we’re going to stop traveling? Absolutely not – especially since we have the data to help ease the burden of heftier prices. Based on our numbers, here’s what you can expect for trends in flight prices:

  • Higher demand = higher prices. With more search interest comes bigger price tags. Both domestic and international flight prices are up in 2023 compared to 2022 (52% for domestic and 29% for international).*
  • These are the regions with the lowest increases. Flights from the US to destinations around the world will see an increase in price for 2023 trips. That being said, flights to the South Pacific (+3%) and Europe (+10%) will see the smallest price increases.*
  • Fly out mid-winter. Both domestic and international trips are expected to see price increases through June, so you may save if you take trips earlier in the year. This is especially true for trips abroad – prices for international flights departing in February dip 8%, making this month a great time to travel.*

Our takeaways: Searches show that the demand for travel is there – and even though flight prices continue to soar (up 52% for domestic and 29% for international), this doesn’t seem to be stopping US travelers from getting away.

*KAYAK US considered round-trip, economy flights for search dates 1.1 – 11.20.2022 and travel dates 1.1-12.31.2023.

The best days to book for a better price.

average round trip flight cost 2023

There’s never a straight answer to the age-old question: when is the best time to book flights for the best possible deal? That’s because the data is always changing. As far as when to book in 2023, we have multiple answers. Based on our numbers, here’s what to expect:

  • Leave on these days of the week. Yet another reason to love Thursdays and Fridays: because they may offer cheaper prices on airfare*. Our historical data shows that the lowest flight prices can be found if you book your departing flights on one of these days.
  • This is when people are traveling. Travelers really take advantage of that extended holiday time off – our historical data shows that December is when travelers take the longest trips. This data also shows that the largest number of trips are taken during June and July*.
  • Trips are being booked in advance. Both domestic and international flight booking windows increased compared to 2021 (9% for domestic and 7% for international). Domestic flights were booked 42 – 46 days in advance and international flights were booked 62 – 66 days in advance, respectively.*

Our takeaways: Opt for flights that leave on Thursday or Friday for a better deal and avoid booking trips during the busier months of June and July if you can help it. Booking your flights in advance also would be wise. In fact, here’s when to book your flights based on your destination:

*KAYAK US historical data was considered for flight search dates 1.1.2022-11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2022-12.31.2022.

Hotel trends.

Lots of up and down..

Flights may have their inflation moment next year, but that doesn’t mean that hotels are following suit – it all depends on where you’re going. More travelers are searching for international hotels, meaning that domestic travelers are likely visiting more destinations where they already have a place to stay. Wondering what that means for nightly rates? Based on our numbers, here’s what to expect when finding a place to stay in 2023:

  • Opposites attract. The data for domestic vs. international stays are pretty opposite. While searches for domestic hotels decreased 5% YoY and nightly rates increased 8% YoY, searches for international hotels increased 4% YoY and nightly rates decreased 6% YoY.*
  • Staying local? Head west. Looking at the locations with more affordable options, the West dominates with generally lower nightly rates. If you’re looking to stay in and around the US for less, you may find the best hotel prices in Northwest and Southwest locations.*
  • International places with good prices. Going along with the theme of trending destinations, the international locations where you’ll find stays with reasonable rates are in Asia, the South Pacific and Europe. Many of these international rates rival those located in the States.*

Our takeaways: Travelers are searching less for domestic stays and more for hotels abroad. Domestic nightly rates have increased slightly – making them around the same price point as international nightly rates, which have decreased slightly.

*KAYAK US considered standard, double occupancy hotel searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023.

Where to stay for less.

No matter where you’re looking to stay, nightly prices for hotels and rentals aren’t seeing huge increases in rates. For both domestic and international stays, travelers could expect to pay under $220 a night depending on where they’re headed. Based on our numbers, here are destinations with affordable accommodations:

Destinations around North America with the lowest rates*

  • Ocean Shores, WA, US : $153/night
  • Portland, OR, US : $161/night
  • Cody, WY, US : $169/night
  • Mexico City, Mexico : $190/night
  • Reno, NV, US : $190/night
  • Salt Lake City, UT, US : $192/night
  • Toronto, Canada : $202/night
  • Houston, TX, US : $205/night
  • San Antonio, TX, US : $212/night
  • Denver, CO, US : $214/night

Destinations outside North America with the lowest rates*

  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam : $105/night
  • Bangkok, Thailand : $124/night
  • Berlin, Germany : $143/night
  • Lisbon, Portugal : $153/night
  • Seoul, South Korea : $162/night
  • Madrid, Spain : $172/night
  • Istanbul, Turkey : $176/night
  • Athens, Greece : $176/night
  • Auckland, New Zealand : $180/night
  • Cartagena, Colombia : $182/night

Our takeaways: The majority of destinations around North America with affordable nightly rates are what we’d consider “outdoorsy” – great for the traveler looking to get outside. International destinations with affordable hotels overlap with regions that may see the lowest increase in airfare prices, which could mean spending less overall to visit a bucket list destination, despite the general rising cost of airfare.

*KAYAK US considered standard, double occupancy hotel searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.20.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Rental car trends.

average round trip flight cost 2023

The demand for rental cars is going down.

When it comes to search interest and prices, rental cars are in a league of their own. This past year was still a little chaotic for those looking for a ride – especially with residual demand and lack of inventory left over from 2021. With many of these issues in the rearview (we hope), we expect to see rental car searches and rates start to level out. Based on our numbers, here’s what you can expect to see for rental cars over the next year:

  • There’s more interest abroad. Domestic rental car searches are down 21% YoY, whereas international searches are up 41% YoY.*
  • Drivers know what they want. What do they want? Some want luxury – searches for luxury car rentals are up 25% YoY. Others want something more sustainable – searches for electric car rentals increased 136% YoY.*
  • This car won the popularity contest. By “this car” we mean this particular type, which was the most popular class of car among renters in 2022. Compact cars took the top spot in 2022, which could spell out more interest in these types of rentals in 2023.*

Our takeaways: There is less demand for rental cars in 2023 (-3%) compared to 2022. For those who are seeking rented rides, specific classes of cars are all the rage, including EVs – which could continue into the next year, since prices at the pump are still higher than usual.

*KAYAK US considered rental car searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.30.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. For YoY comparison of car categories, the same search dates in 2021 and the same travel dates in 2022 were used.

Rental prices are matching search energy.

Search interest isn’t the only thing that’s going down – rental prices also saw decreases over the past year. Though average daily rates for domestic car rentals are down 7% YoY, average daily rates for international rental car have risen 12% YoY, matching the increased search interest for international rental cars (up 41% YoY). Based on our numbers, here are destinations where drivers can expect lower average daily rental rates:

Destinations around North America with rental deals*

  • Cancun, Mexico: $37/day
  • Aruba: $58/day
  • Miami, FL, US: $59/day
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL, US: $63/day
  • Los Angeles, CA, US: $64/day
  • San Jose, CA, US: $66/day
  • San Diego, CA, US: $67/day
  • Tampa, FL, US: $68/day
  • Boston, MA, US: $68/day
  • Santa Ana, CA, US: $69/day

Destinations outside North America with rental deals*

  • Bangkok, Thailand: $37/day
  • Málaga, Spain: $43/day
  • San José, Costa Rica: $45/day
  • Cape Town, South Africa: $49/day
  • Liberia, Costa Rica: $51/day
  • Athens, Greece: $53/day
  • Madrid, Spain: $57/day
  • Frankfurt, Germany: $59/day
  • Lisbon, Portugal: $59/day
  • Auckland, New Zealand: $59/day

Our takeaways: Rental rates as a whole are dropping it low(er), with a total 5% YoY decrease in daily rates compared to those in 2022. For the best deals in and around the US, travelers will find the cheapest rentals located in California and Florida. For international car rentals, travelers can expect to pay less than $60 a day at the most affordable destinations.

*KAYAK US considered rental car searches between 7.1.2022 and 11.30.2022 for travel dates 1.1.2023-12.31.2023. For year over year percent change, the same search dates in 2021 and travel dates in 2022 were used. Search volume thresholds were utilized, and destinations were excluded based on insufficient search volume.

Airfare in early 2023 averaging higher than prior-year levels, expert says

Summer airline prices, though, will ease from the highs seen in 2022.

Inteletravel co-founder and president James Ferrara discusses how work-from-home is impacting travel sales during the holiday season on 'The Claman Countdown.'

Airfare for domestic trips in the first few months of the new year are already averaging above 2022 levels as demand and costs remain high for major U.S. carriers, according to new data.

Trips in January 2023 will cost travelers $208, on average, per round-trip ticket, up 7% from prices the same time a year ago, according to data from travel app Hopper. Prices for trips between February and April are up even more, increasing 13% compared with a year ago.

Hopper economist Hayley Berg told FOX Business that higher costs for labor, goods and jet fuel are impacting the "overall cost to an airline… and will be passed on, to some degree, to consumers."

THE BLEISURE TRAVELER—COMING TO THE RESCUE OF AIRLINES EVERYWHERE

On jet fuel prices, Berg said, "the reality is they're the highest that they've been since 2014." She estimated that 15% to 30% of the price consumers pay when buying a ticket is from fuel alone.

"When you see that significant increases in jet fuel , it just has to be passed onto the consumer in some way," she added.

She said that airfare will remain high until there is a significant and sustained improvement in jet fuel prices.

DELTA LIFTS ITS 2023 GUIDANCE AS TRAVEL STOCK TAKES OFF

Prices at the start of 2022 were lower than what they normally would have been due to surges in COVID-19 cases. Berg added that this is part of the reason there are increases over last year.

Summer airline prices, though, will ease from the highs seen in 2022.

In the summer of 2022, consumers saw a massive run-up in demand and jet fuel prices. There also wasn't enough supply. As a result, airfare was pushed up "tremendously," according to Berg.

"We were seeing thousand - dollar flights for just domestic trips," Berg said.

For summer 2023, Berg is not expecting massive supply constraints. On top of that, jet fuel is "looking better." Even though demand is going to remain strong, it will be more in line with typical seasonal patterns, she added.

Berg is therefore expecting summer prices to be better for the consumer compared with a year ago.

The best piece of advice for flying in 2023, according to Berg, is to fly at the right time and be flexible on trip dates.

For instance, travelers can save significantly if they book a trip in January rather than waiting for spring break.

Inflation caused the price of travel to skyrocket last holiday season, but in 2023, people can expect some relief. Airfare and other travel costs are cheaper this year than they were in 2022, but despite lower inflation, high prices may still be a problem for many Americans during holiday travel.

The percentage of holiday travelers who say their plans will strain their budgets remains relatively unchanged since last year: from 32 percent in 2022 to 31 percent in 2023, according to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey. The percentage of holiday travelers changing something about their plans as a result of inflation or high prices also remains high: from 79 percent in 2022 to 77 percent in 2023.

Despite high prices, the holidays don’t have to be a hit to your budget. Here’s how you can expect inflation to impact your plans — and how you can alleviate financial pressure to enjoy the time with people important to you.

Even though travel prices have come down a bit from last year, there's a significant cumulative effect to the high inflation and high interest rates that we have experienced the past two years. — Ted Rossman | Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst

Key Bankrate statistics on travel inflation

  • Inflation is making a big impact on holiday travel. 77% of holiday travelers are changing their plans in 2023 due to inflation and rising prices.
  • Travelers are commonly driving to cut costs. 27% of holiday travelers will drive instead of fly to their destination, due to inflation and rising prices. Additionally, 23% are taking fewer trips and 23% are selecting less expensive accommodations and/or destinations.
  • Lower-income people are driving more. 32% of holiday travelers with an income under $50,000 per year are driving instead of flying to their destination, more than any other income bracket.
  • Americans are struggling to make holiday travel work in their budgets. 31% of holiday travelers say the upcoming holidays will put a strain on their budget and 25% worry they’ll feel pressured to spend more than they’re comfortable. 27% are worried their travel plans could be disrupted by airline delays or cancellations, weather, extra lodging expenses, lost luggage or other reasons.

How inflation in 2023 is impacting travel costs

Airports may be a little more crowded this year: Nearly half (48 percent) of U.S. adults are planning an overnight leisure trip this holiday season, up from 43 percent of U.S. adults in 2022, according to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey.

“We’re still seeing a lot of post-pandemic demand for experiences such as travel , dining and concert tickets,” Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst Ted Rossman says. “When people are splurging these days, it’s much more likely to be on experiences than physical goods such as electronics and furniture.”

Increased demand also means increased spending. Americans are projected to spend $731 billion on domestic leisure travel this year, up from $718 billion in 2022, according to the U.S. Travel Association . While key vacation expenses are still expensive, prices aren’t increasing as fast as they did in 2022.

Airfare inflation fell 5.5% since COVID-19 began, but other travel expenses ballooned

At its peak in June 2022, the inflation rate was 9.1 percent year-over-year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , which dwindled to 3.7 percent in August 2023. Though the inflation rate has decreased significantly since 2022, it’s still higher than before COVID-19. The inflation rate was 2.3 percent in February 2020, according to the BLS .

The inflation rate of airfare decreased 13.3 percent between August 2022 and August 2023, and the inflation rate for car and truck rentals decreased 6.8 percent, according to the BLS. While the inflation rate for lodging away from home, such as at hotels, increased 3 percent year-over-year as of August 2023, hotel prices aren’t as high as they were in the summer .

Travelers may still notice the effect of inflation when they book hotels and buy gas for a road trip. The inflation rates of lodging away from home and gasoline have grown tremendously since February 2020 (notably, the inflation rate of gasoline rose 46.1 percent). However, the inflation rate of airline fares actually decreased 5.5 percent:

Inflation rate percentage change

Falling inflation on airline tickets means the average flight now costs less for domestic holiday travelers than it did in 2019. In dollars, Americans booking a domestic round-trip flight in September for Thanksgiving 2023 can expect to spend $268 on average, according to travel booking site Hopper , 7 percent less than the cost of the same ticket in 2019.

Thanksgiving airfare is down 14% from 2022

Americans lept at the chance to take trips again after COVID-19 lockdowns lifted, but travel demand has now somewhat normalized. Travelers booking domestic airline tickets in September for Thanksgiving 2023 will pay, on average, 14 percent less than they would have paid last year. Rental cars are $42 on average per day, a 17 percent decrease year-over-year. Hotel prices around Thanksgiving, however, are expected to be slightly more expensive year-over-year: $206 per night, an 8 percent increase:

Average cost of Thanksgiving travel expenses

For winter holiday travelers, buying a plane ticket for a domestic round-trip flight is $400 on average, a 29 percent increase since 2019 and a 12 percent decrease since 2022. Rental car prices around Christmas have remained unchanged; the cost was $53 per day in both 2023 and 2022. Hotels are averaging $233 per night, a 6 percent increase since 2022:

Average cost of winter holiday travel expenses

Travelers booking an international trip are in for the highest price increases. Expect to see a 69 percent average increase between 2019 and 2023 on winter flights to Europe and an eyewatering 74 percent average increase on flights to Asia, according to Hopper.

Nearly 1 in 3 lower-income households are driving instead of flying due to flight prices

Thanksgiving flights may be cheaper this year, but the $268 price tag may still be too high for many Americans .

While wages are catching up to inflation , many Americans are still feeling the impact of high prices. Between the beginning of 2021 and the second quarter of 2023, inflation rose 15.8 percent, while wages rose 12.8 percent, according to BLS data analyzed by Bankrate.

“With people paying so much more for rent, food, gas and more, there’s less disposable income to go around,” Rossman says. “The excess savings that many households built up during the pandemic is all but gone at this point, and the resumption of student loan payments is another headwind.”

Holiday travelers who make under $50,000 per year are most likely (86 percent) of any income bracket to change their plans due to inflation or rising prices this year, according to Bankrate. The higher a household’s income, the less likely they’re changing their plans:

  • Under $50,000 per year: 86 percent
  • $50,000-$79,999: 78 percent
  • $80,000-$99,999: 68 percent
  • $100,000 per year or more: 69 percent

Holiday travelers making under $50,000 a year are also the most likely of any income bracket (32 percent) to drive instead of fly this year due to inflation or rising prices.

Source: Bankrate survey, September 12-14, 2023 *Of U.S. adults planning on an overnight leisure trip this holiday season

However, middle-income holiday travelers are also affected by high prices: Holiday travelers making between $50,000 and $74,999 are the most likely income bracket (27 percent) to engage in cheaper activities during their holiday plans due to high prices.

Household incomes, if they continue to rise at their current pace, aren’t expected to recover from loss of total purchasing power until the fourth quarter of 2024, according to Bankrate’s new Inflation to Wage index. An uncertain economy could have long-term impact on travel, according to Rossman.

“It stands to reason that this pent-up demand could fade, especially if high inflation, high interest rates and other economic worries persist,” Rossman says.

4 ways to save on travel in 2023 and 2024

It’s normal to be worried about travel spending during economic uncertainty, but there are ways to take advantage of discounted tickets and bundles, even if you don’t have a credit card with rewards points. Here are four ways to help save on travel in 2023 and 2024:

1. Book tickets strategically

  • If you’re planning on booking airline tickets, book them as soon as possible. The best time to book airline tickets for the holiday season is by Oct. 14, according to Hopper.
  • Additional tip: Try to book your flight for an atypical day, such as the Monday ahead of Thanksgiving instead of the weekend.

2. Utilize fare-tracking apps

  • Plenty of apps like Hopper, Skyscanner, Kiwi.com and more help you not only get the best deal on a flight, but can also help you book hotels or rental cars.
  • Additional tip: Many apps will also allow you to examine when flight costs might go up and when is the most expensive time to fly, allowing you to get the most competitive price.

3. Use your credit card for deals

  • Choosing the right travel card can help you take advantage of a lot of different deals on flights, hotels, gas and more.
  • Some of the best travel credit cards of 2023 can help you earn flight miles and travel insurance, or even give you access to airport lounges.

4. Learn how to travel hack

  • Travel hacking allows you to “hack” flights and hotels, allowing you to redeem points for travel.
  • Even if you don’t want to use a credit card , you can get extra points by using shopping portals, dining rewards and taking advantage of mistake fares, or fares that have been priced below market value due to a mistake from the airline.

Bottom line

If you’re thinking of booking tickets to travel this holiday season, now is the time. Prices will only continue to climb, and your budget may be stretched if you wait. If you think you might be unable to see your out-of-state family or have the vacation of your dreams this year, perhaps wait until next year when you can book those tickets well in advance.

Travel costs aren’t set in stone, and they’re even more uncertain going into next year. However, with a combination of travel points and tricks, as well as thoughtful planning, you can get a well-deserved vacation after the hectic last several years.

Methodology

All figures from the study on holiday travel, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,419 US adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 12th – 14th September 2023. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+). The survey was carried out online and meets rigorous quality standards. It employed a non-probability-based sample using both quotas upfront during collection and then a weighting scheme on the back end designed and proven to provide nationally representative results.

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.

See what's happening where you are here:

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates is now joining Sophy with some new polling ahead of the local elections, which will take place on Thursday.

YouGov have tonight made some final calls for some of the key contests, after interviewing almost 9,000 people over a two-week period.

As Sam explains: "Let me start with two key battlegrounds - and it's Milton Keynes and Hyndburn. Now, we're about to see Labour HQ will be very pleased with Sky and YouGov saying they're both going red.

"Now, Hyndburn is a red wall council that has proved sticky recently, that's why they'll be pleased."

However, Sam does point to a few councils which YouGov says are too close to call.

These include Norwich and Tamworth. Labour could be building momentum here,  but the pollster was unwilling to make a call.

With Humza Yousaf stepping down as Scotland's first minister and SNP leader, Scotland reporter Jenness Mitchell takes a look at some of the potential candidates that could throw their hat into the ring to take the top job.

Sophy is now speaking to Labour MP Dame Diana Johnson, who has been the driving force behind an amendment hoping to get compensation into the hands of victims of the Infected Blood Scandal.

She says: "I understand that the government have accepted the amendment that the Labour frontbench put forward, which was for the compensation body to be set up within three months of Royal Assent.

"That mirrors what the House of Commons voted for last December.

"I'm pleased that the government have recognised how important it is to get a timeframe for this."

She points out that roughly two people die every week connected with the scandal.

"What we need now is quickness, we need this compensation body set up and we need this compensation to be paid as quickly as possible to the infected and the affected."

How is the government going to find this money?

"Well, the government accepted some time ago the moral case for compensation to be paid," Dame Diana says. "What they have failed to do so far is to actually say how much is going to be paid.

"They've not talked about the quantum."

The MP says this may be a pay-out of around £5bn.

Tonight, we're expecting movement on a campaign for compensation to victims of the Infected Blood Scandal.

In the Lords, peers will be voting on an amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill - which would go some way to achieving that.

New data released today shows 710 people have died since 2017 after being infected with HIV and Hepatitis C from infected blood imported from the US.

In the last few minutes, a concession has been made by the government in accepting a Labour-led demand that the infected blood compensation scheme be set up within three months of legislation coming into force.

Deputy Lords leader Earl Howe said: "Victims of this scandal have waited far too long to see justice and the government shares the determination of the House to ensure compensation reaches victims quickly."

He added: "We recognise that Parliament and the infected blood community need clarity on when these measures will be in place.

"I can say now that the government supports the opposition's amendment to deliver the regulations establishing an infected blood compensation scheme within three months of royal assent and we are committed to doing so."

John Vine, former independent inspector of borders and immigration, said he doesn't think the scheme will take "thousands" of people being removed "for it to have some impact".

"But what the impact is going to be is difficult to know," he says.

"Is it going to make a very small difference to the number of people arriving by boat across the Channel, an insignificant difference, or is it going to make a major difference.

"It's anybody's guess."

Asked for his prediction, Mr Vine thinks the Rwanda scheme "will have an impact".

"The only problem is I think we need to get on with it if it's going to happen, and there needs to be some sort of evaluation of how its working."

John Vine, former independent inspector of borders and immigration, is Sophy's first guest tonight - and he is asked how the government can lose track of migrants.

"It depends really what you mean by lose," he says.

Mr Vine says that because of the way asylum seekers are housed, "many people are allowed to suggest that they have relatives, addresses, friends in the community".

"And the Home Office allows people to, usually under conditions where they come and report on a regular basis to an immigration centre, go into the community and live with friends and relatives."

He adds: "Very often though... the vetting of those addresses is pretty cursory, and so I'm not entirely sure the Home Office have the capacity to actually check all those addresses."

"In any case, people have always absconded from reporting," Mr Vine continues.

"Often because they are being recriminalised by organised crime, often with jobs in the grey economy or in illegal activity."

Mr Vine goes on to say it isn't a "very good start" for the Home Office if so many people who may have gone to Rwanda are missing.

And on claims that ministers have said these people will be found, Mr Vine says: "That's easier said than done."

He goes on to admit that they likely "won't all be found".

"The question is, where do they go?"

"If the government are going to deport people, they need to keep them within a controlled environment so we can find them and remove them when they want to."

By Nick Stylianou, communities producer

More than half of the asylum seekers allocated for removal to Rwanda cannot be found by the Home Office, according to the government's own impact assessment.

Almost six thousand people were due to be issued a "Notice of Intent" that their asylum claim was inadmissible, but just over two thousand are able to be tracked down.

The Home Office claims in a new document that the government of  Rwanda  has agreed "in principle" to accept 5,700 asylum seekers from the UK, but admits only 2,143 attend regular check-ins and "can be located for detention".

It is unclear whether the 3,557 missing asylum seekers have gone underground to avoid deportation or are victims of administrative errors caused by moving between different taxpayer-funded accommodations.

You can read more from Sky News below:

It's another day of difficult headlines for the government on migration.

"The government denies losing track of likely Rwanda deportees."

"Home Office lost contact with thousands set for Rwanda flight."

A document slipped out by the department states that of the 5,700 migrants identified for removal to Rwanda, only 2,145 of them "continue to report to the Home Office and can be located for detention."

Apparently: "The Home Office has until now relied on the incentive of free accommodation and a £49 weekly allowance to prevent people from absconding, but officials fear that the threat of deportation would outweigh that."

You don't have to be a genius to work out that if you know you're about to be put on a flight to Rwanda, you might stop checking in with the Home Office, and quietly slip away.

It's thought that many will try to make their way to Ireland, where the government says the threat of deportation to Rwanda is causing "fearful" migrants to head for Ireland instead of the UK – and a diplomatic row has broken out over whether they can be sent back.

Now there is an argument that all of this shows the Rwanda plan IS working – purely on the metric of whether the threat of being sent to Rwanda is a deterrent – well, people are already changing their behaviour. Success.

There are two things I would add though.

It can't be a good thing to see so many vulnerable people simply disappearing – making it much more likely that they'll be exploited – sell their bodies – work illegally – become victims of crime.

And of course – the government wants the threat of being sent to Rwanda to act as a deterrent for migrants who are NOT in the UK… rather than a deterrent for those already here.

And on that, it's too early to tell.

We're starting tonight's show with the latest from Hainault in east London, where a 36-year-old man was arrested today after a stabbing attack.

A 14-year-old boy was killed  and four people, including two police officers, were left injured after a man went on a rampage in Hainault.

Police were called to reports  that a man was wielding a sword and attacking members of the public at around 7am.

The suspect was arrested 22 minutes later and the doorbell footage shows the moment officers cornered the hooded man, who was still holding his weapon, in a driveway.
