Agritourism has become a buzzword of sorts — in this day and age, travelers are increasingly more interested in where their food is grown and connecting with the land that provides it. Perhaps this reflects a need to unplug and enjoy a simpler way of life, but farm stays are globally on the rise.

What is agritourism?

Whether it is experiencing life on a working farm or ranch, mingling with animals or assisting with a wine harvest, agritourism is the chance to escape your daily routine and immerse yourself in the world of a local farming experience.

From an organic vineyard in Chile to a ranch in Nebraska and a farm in South Africa , we have compiled a few of the most incredible farm stays around the world.

Top 8 Agritourism Destinations in the World

  • Art & Media

Agritourism is a subsector of the ecotourism industry in which tourists visit farms, ranches, or other agricultural businesses, whether for the purpose of education or entertainment. These vacations can be either an experience—say, for fishing, horseback riding, or touring a tea plantation—or a full-on immersive stay in which guests participate in regular upkeep of crops and livestock for several days.

There's nothing new about this form of travel—people have been working on farms in exchange for accommodation for decades, heading to Italian vineyards or Rocky Mountain dude ranches for what's become known as "WWOOFing" (worldwide opportunities on organic farms). Beyond the beautiful scenery and camaraderie, agritourism helps foster a deeper understanding of global farming processes through hands-on experience.

Here are eight destinations for agritourism around the world.

A couple of things make Taiwan an ideal spot for an in-depth agritourism vacation: Many smaller farms offer homestay accommodation, so guests can mingle with the locals as opposed to staying in hotel rooms, and because the food served and sold is grown locally, this option makes it easier to support sustainable agriculture and lower your carbon footprint while traveling.

Lush, rugged Taiwan is an ideal environment for growing sugar, pineapples and citrus fruits, crude tea, and asparagus—the country's principal cash and export crops. Around 200 “ leisure farms ” spread across 31 designated rural areas offer tours of the fields and facilities for these crops. They also, of course, provide ample chances to sample the products.

Tuscany was one of the first destinations to really coin the concept of farm stays, thanks to its atmospheric agriturismos , old farmhouses that were turned into inns when agriculture in Italy was suffering during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Now, there are an estimated 20,000 of them around the country, offering an authentic and quaint Italian pastoral experience to people who would otherwise only be able to see this region on a group tour.

While a few of the estates in Tuscany offer a more educational focus, the attraction of staying in a farmhouse in this region can mostly be attributed to the views, the laidback ambiance, and the locally grown olives, grapes, and other fruits. From wine-soaked stays in the Chianti area to farmhouses that create magic out of homegrown tomatoes, herbs, and cheeses, this sun-drenched region is widely celebrated for its agriculture, provisions, and unmatched scenery.

On the popular Spanish island of Mallorca, farmhouse inns focus more on providing isolation and solitude than offering hands-on farming experience. With millions of visitors descending on the beaches of Mallorca and other Balearic Islands each summer, peace and quiet is rare and coveted.

Mainly located in the hills of inland Mallorca, away from coastal crowds, these inns range from rustic century-old farmhouses to luxury bed-and-breakfasts with spas and swimming pools. Some sit in the middle of orange or fig groves and serve dishes made from ingredients grown on-site.

Brazil is a vast country, 86% of the size of the U.S., with abounding natural resources and a vibrant, diverse agricultural industry. The South American nation is one of the world's largest producers of soy, maize, sugarcane, and rice, and an average supplier of fruit, coffee, eucalyptus, and tropical flowers. While agriculture isn't the bulk of the country's economy , Brazil's innovative and sustainable practices really attract farm-minded travelers.

Brazil provides a global example of regenerating and restoring degraded pastures. According to the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock, a third of rural private properties is dedicated just to preserving native vegetation. Each farm sets aside a minimum of 20% of land for this purpose.

Tourists can experience the rich pastoral culture by embarking on farm tours or opting for an immersive, participatory stay.

The Hawaii Agritourism Association offers resources for tourists who want to have a tropical farm experience, or who simply want to learn about and taste the state's best farm fare. Agritourism options range from visiting coffee plantations in the Big Island's Kona region to exploring the tropical plantations on Maui to staying at organic farms on Oahu.

The vast range of farm tour options caters to both beachgoers and adventure tourists, and can be included briefly in the itinerary so guests don't have to center their whole trip around the state's agriculture (although that would be possible, too).

Tourism is now the largest foreign exchange earner for Grenada, but agriculture is not far behind. This Caribbean country is packed with cocoa plantations, spice farms, and fruit farms. Nutmeg, mace, cloves, cinnamon, and turmeric are grown in higher quantities here than almost anywhere else in the world.

One of the Caribbean's best agritourism resorts, the Belmont Estates , is located in Grenada. This three-century-old estate has a thriving nutmeg and cocoa business, an organic farm, and a restaurant that serves traditional Grenadian food made with ingredients grown on-site. Any tourist keen to see exotic edibles at their source should consider Grenada a top choice for a Caribbean-based farm experience.

More than a third of the vegetables and two-thirds of the fruits and nuts grown in the U.S. come from California. The Golden State is home to a world-famous Wine Country , century-old orchards, avocado farms, fisheries, and more. Naturally, it's an agritourism utopia, and many of the smaller family farms in this West Coast state rely on agritourism to supplement their income.

Besides staying in the wineries and vineyards of the Central Coast and Sonoma areas, family farms and large ranches also offer a more hands-on approach. Many teach small-scale farming techniques and even offer strategies for organic growing. The University of California system, one of the largest state-run higher education systems in the U.S., has a small-farm program that helps growers create education-oriented agritourism businesses.

Philippines

onfilm / Getty Images

With its more than 7,000 islands exhibiting a diverse range of conditions, the Philippines is an ideal place for visiting several varying agritourism sites or focusing on a niche product. Tourists can visit a vast pineapple plantation—like the country's largest, the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation—for a taste of large-scale agriculture, or instead focus on smaller operations like orchid farms, bee farms, and those focusing on exotic fruits like dragon fruit and papaya.

The Philippines government is looking to actively bolster what is already a successful niche for tour companies and farmers, and travelers from the U.S. don't have to worry too much about language barriers because English is widely spoken.

Five Agritourism Destinations to Visit This Summer

Because we call could use a vacation right now

Shelby Vittek, Modern Farmer

Skaneateles.jpg

Over the past 14 months, we’ve sat at home and watched the world come to a halt, dreaming of the next time we’d be able to safely hit the road or board an airplane. With vaccines now rolling out across the country and states slowly reopening, it’s time to think about traveling again.

These five regions are booming with agritourism opportunities—and they’re just as ready for visits from vacation-hungry travelers as you are to leave the house.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville boasts more than 17 farmers markets that feature fresh produce and goods from surrounding farms. Sample local fare at restaurants and craft breweries in Asheville’s bustling downtown, many of which are committed to farm-to-table menus. Try your hand at beekeeping at Killer Bees Honey Farm , which offers tours—protective suit, veil and gloves included—and close inspections of their buzzing hives. Get off the beaten path and pick your own wild edibles on guided No Taste Like Home foraging tours. You can also hit the Western NC Cheese Trail , featuring four artisan cheese makers, including the goat cheese focused Round Mountain Creamery and Looking Glass Creamery , a small family dairy farm that follows a seasonal farming model to make blue, feta, gouda and Alpine-style cheeses. Ready to travel but still craving a bit of social distance? Stay in one of the cottages at the 40-acre East Fork Farm .

The Finger Lakes, New York

Seneca Lake vineyard

There’s a total of 11 lakes in the Finger Lakes region, but much of the region’s agritourism is located around Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, the longest and largest ones. With Geneva, Watkins Glen and Ithaca as the three points, this triangle-shaped area is home to dozens of winery tasting rooms—including Red Newt Cellars , Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard and Bloomer Creek Vineyard —and their vineyards, plus orchards, breweries, farms and creameries. No trip is complete without a visit to the Finger Lakes Cider House or South Hill Cider , where you can sample tastes of the region’s burgeoning cider industry. Get moving at a goat yoga class at Lively Run Goat Dairy or on a lengthy hike. Ithaca, of course, is known for its gorges, but there are plunging waterfalls and national forests to be explored as well.

Fresno County, California

Fresno County CA

Home to 1.88 million acres of farmland, Fresno County has miles and miles of fruit orchards. In early spring, the 62-mile Blossom Trail is lined with fruit and nut trees in full bloom. Later, the same route morphs into the Fresno County Fruit Trail . The self-guided tour includes destinations along the way where you can purchase plums, peaches, apples, nectarines, apricots, persimmons, almonds and pistachios. Make one of your stops Simonian Farms , a family-run fruit stand run for four generations. The red barn encloses a model Western town, as well as vintage tractors, restored gasoline pumps and antique balloon-tire bikes. In Fresno, the county’s bounty of produce is on full display in the 6,000-square-foot Vineyard Farmers Market , open Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Willamette Valley

It may be widely known as a wine region, but the Willamette Valley grows more than just grapes. Hazelnuts are just as important of a crop—99 percent of all hazelnuts grown in the US are grown here—so you’ll see filbert trees all over the fertile valley. Hit the Great Oaks Food Trail , a self-guided tour that features family farms, ranches and orchards, the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge and eateries that source ingredients locally, such as Bountiful Pies . What you really need most on a vacation in the Willamette Valley is a trip to one of Oregon’s many hot springs. The secluded Terwilliger Hot Springs , also called Cougar Hot Springs, has six soaking pools in the Willamette National Forest that require a half-mile hike to get to. For a more luxurious soak, Breitenbush Hot Springs offers an overnight wellness retreat that includes organic, vegetarian meals.

Wisconsin cheese

No discussion of Wisconsin is complete without mentioning cheese. The Dairy State is home to more than 1,200 cheesemakers who make more than 600 different kinds of cheese. Ellsworth Dairy Cooperative is known for its fresh, warm cheese curds, sold daily, for which people line up. Take a tour at Marieke Gouda , a woman-owned dairy, where you’ll see all aspects of the process that go into making the farmstead cheese. Get a true farm-to-table experience at a Suncrest Gardens ’ pizza farm, where they churn out pies topped with ingredients grown on or around the farm. Beyond cheese, Wisconsin is home to a diverse farming community, including those run by the Amish and Native American tribes, with additional agritourism opportunities around cranberry bogs, maple sugaring and—increasingly—cideries such as Maiden Rock and Island Orchard .

The combination of agriculture and tourism might seem like an odd mix at first, but the lure of open skies, rolling meadows, and encountering food at its source is appealing to many travelers. These days, anyone interested in learning where their food comes from, tasting organic fare, or exploring a different way of living, has plenty of options. From farm stays in the lush mountains of Taiwan to wine-tasting in South Africa, here are the 10 best agritourism experiences to have around the world.

Learn Beekeeping in Kentucky

Beekeeper holding honeycomb full of bees

Did the highly-acclaimed film Honeyland leave a lasting impression? If so, maybe you’re curious about how beekeeping and honey production works in the modern world. Several establishments in Kentucky offer introductory courses on all things beekeeping. Class dates vary between schools, but we suggest checking out Shaker Village or Bluegrass Beekeeper School . You’ll learn about the honeybee lifecycle, how to choose and assemble hive equipment, hive site selection, pest management, costs, and most importantly, how to establish your very first hive!

Experience a Farm Stay in Taiwan

Farm stays are gaining popularity among travelers, so why not make your way to Taiwan for an authentic rural escape? A stay at Tou-Cheng Leisure Farm Hotel — an eco-friendly, organic fruit and vegetable farm in Yilan County — promises to be a peaceful and educational experience. Activities include farm tours, cooking lessons with farm-grown produce, and live demonstrations that guests are welcome to participate in as well (like planting rice).

Sip Kona Coffee in Hawaii

Discover the island-state’s Kona coffee industry on the Big Island during your next tropical getaway. The nearly 600 working coffee plantations clustered around the west coast village of Kailua-Kona are all open to the public, which means that visitors face an endless slew of coffee tour options. Opt for the tour and tasting at Greenwell Farms to learn about the great efforts Hula Daddy Coffee takes to reduce their carbon footprint. If you visit in November, you’ll be able to attend the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival held in Kailua Village. It's a must for coffee lovers.

Dine Farm-to-Table in Italy

People drinking wine with cheese on boards

Italy’s premier agritourism destination Tuscany bubbles over with boutique accommodations. Perched upon traditional vineyards and farms, these hotels provide the perfect combination of Tuscan food and refined Italian culture. Located in the heart of Chianti’s vineyards, Agriturismo Podere Campriano is a family-owned farm stay that produces wine and olive oil and offers cooking classes and winery tours. If you’re more interested in venturing off on your own, check out the number of enotecas in Greve. Staffed with friendly personnel eager to share their knowledge on the farm-to-table and grape-to-bottle processes, these small shops sell some of the best homegrown food and wine in the region.

Live the Good Life in Greece

Buildings on the water in Syros, Greece

Meet The Good Life, a collection of renovated old stone houses set among the olive groves and vineyards on the peaceful Cyclades island of Syros. This corner of the Aegean Sea has yet to welcome package holiday-makers and cruise ships. Meet owner Nick Geronimos and his team who keep guests’ fridges stocked with fresh bread, local wine, and organic meats from the local butcher in order to ensure the island lives up to its reputation as a “ blue zone ” (a rare place in the world where residents live up to 15% longer than average).

Visitors are encouraged to help themselves to fresh produce from the vegetable garden and eggs from the chicken coup. There’s even an on-site yoga center and painting platform perched upon the concrete top of the guest house’s biological water system. All this is sustained by off-grid energy and water, which gives The Good Life a “humble luxury” stamp of approval. When you’re ready to tear yourself away from the peaceful grounds, staff are waiting to assist visitors in enjoying Syros’ pristine nature whether it’s swimming, sailing, hiking or cycling.

Explore Québec's Countryside

Quebec countryside with farmhouse

It’s wise to work up a serious appetite before launching yourself through Québec's most famous foodie circuit. Roughly 23 miles northwest of Québec City, Île d’Orléans beckons travelers away from the commotion and into the romantic countryside. Although the beautiful landscape is an attraction in its own right, it’s the combination of Île d’Orléans’ natural resources and award-winning local cuisine that earns it a spot on this list.

The region's family-produced blackcurrant liqueur has risen to international fame, so a stop at Cassis Monna and Filles to sample the goods is mandatory. Fertile soils produce bountiful harvests of divine fruit, vegetables, honey, maple, wine, and cider — cementing Île d’Orléans’ reputation as one of the best agritourism destinations in the world. Plan a visit to the Panache Mobile restaurant, which boasts dramatic views over Montmorency Falls, Jean-Pierre Plante Farm to taste organic berries, and the countless taverns and vineyards serving the region’s finest wines, microbrews, and homegrown pub fare.

Go Wine-Tasting in South Africa

Vineyard with mountains in background in South Africa

Rent a car and leave Cape Town behind to discover the largest wine-making region in all of South Africa. Stellenbosch is South Africa’s most established wine village and a prime place to kick-off a wine-tasting tour. The 18th-century wine estate, Meerlust , ranks at the top when it comes to South African wine, and you'll want to start with the Rubicon , the estate’s iconic red blend.

Solms-Delta Wine Estate — a sprawling 320-acre vineyard and onsite restaurant that shares ownership and profits with its farmers — makes for a relaxing stop between Stellenbosch and the next big name in South African wine, Franschhoek. Once in Franschhoek, a bundle of superb wineries all vie to be chosen. Tastes at Chamonix and Mont Rochelle won’t disappoint.

Experience Alternative Island Life on Mallorca

Orange grove in Mallorca with mountains in the distance

Most visitors flock to this Spanish island to enjoy its beaches and parties. While it’s fair to say the coast is overrun with tourists, the heart of Mallorca offers an alternative atmosphere. Centuries-old farms tucked between fruit groves on the hilly inlands offer a rare peek into what island life is really like for most locals. Ranging from rustic to regal, a finca (farm) stay in Mallorca can be as luxurious or laidback as you desire.

Finca Can Guilló features a 400-year old farmhouse surrounded by blooming gardens and citrus trees to entice guests. The family-run luxury estate, Ca’s Sant Soller , stuns the senses with its lush, garden-centric theme and the ever-present citrus scent wafting through the air from orange orchards. Here, guests can feast on local fish and fresh fruit before burning it all off on long walks along the UNESCO-recognized " Dry Stone Route ."

Visit Pineapple Plantations in the Philippines

Aerial view of pineapple plantations in the Philippines

With over 64,000 acres, 4,400 employees, and 90 years of experience, Del Monte Philippines, Inc . holds the top spot as the biggest pineapple plantation in the world. For travelers looking to explore, Camp Philips is the gateway into the expansive fruit fields and once inside, you’ll find it's much more than a simple farm. It’s an empire employing thousands of locals — all of whom support one of the Philippines' most profitable natural resources. Guests can relax and refuel at the on-site Clubhouse after a day of wandering the grounds, viewing the manufacturing plant, picking their very own pineapple, and buying pineapple products.

Become a Rancher in California

Cattle ranch in Sierra Nevada, California

Sustaining three generations from its thriving operation, V6 Ranch in Parkfield, California not only demonstrates a day in the life of a cattle rancher, but also allows visitors to get in on the action too. In operation since 1961, V6 now runs three-day cattle drives — allowing tourists to get a real feel for cowboy life. First-time cowboys receive lessons on how to gather, sort, and move cattle and develop or practice riding techniques — all while enjoying the amber landscape and rounded mountains of central California. That’s not all — V6 also offers Dude Ranch Weekends and Cowboy Academies.

Agriturismo, American style: 8 farm and food experiences in the USA

awesome travel agriculture

Italy may have defined the concept of agriturismo (a working farm that takes in guests), but you don’t need a passport to have an authentic experience that brings you closer to the source. Domestic agritourism is on the rise.

Potential reasons for the boom? The appeal of open space, starry skies, fragrant meadows and adorable animals is nothing new. But we live in a hyperconnected society and, while technology certainly has its benefits, the compulsion to be constantly plugged in has spurred a longing for simpler times.

“People are looking for ‘real’ vacations,” says Beth Kennett of Vermont’s Liberty Hill Farm. “On a deeper level, most folks are generations away from having family involved in agriculture. Parents want their children to understand more about what they eat and the environment, and how those things are connected.”

These days, travelers interested in learning where their food is grown and produced have an increasing number of options. Vacationers can hunker down at working farms and ranches throughout the United States. The result is a culinary immersion. More than just picking herbs and veggies from the garden, rural getaways allow people to reconnect with the land.

Geography plays a major role in agritourism, which means your experience on a ranch in Oregon will differ from a dairy farm in Vermont. That said, you’ll find some commonalities. Topping the list are fresh fare, affordable accommodations and scenic surroundings. Think: Organic gardens, chicken coops, beehives, fruit orchards and verdant pastures for cattle to graze.

Inviting guests to stay is a chance for growers, croppers and cultivators to share their world with others. Farm life isn’t easy — in fact, most will tell you it’s hard and humbling — but it’s rewarding and, best of all, delicious.

If your fantasies are five-star fancy, agritourism probably isn’t for you. However, if you’re craving a truly meaningful trip (and you’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty), one of these picturesque farms and ranches might be the perfect place to spend your next vacation.

Liberty Hill Farm Rochester, Vermont

This family-run dairy farm has welcomed tourists since 1984. Adults and kids of all ages can take part in an array of activities, from milking cows and bottle-feeding calves to fly-fishing and hiking. Of course, you’ll need energy for all that. Luckily, a stay at Liberty Hill Farm includes lodging and meals. Days begin with a hearty breakfast and end with a home-cooked dinner.

Willow-Witt Ranch Ashland, Oregon

Seeking an off-the-grid escape? Consider Willow-Witt Ranch in southern Oregon. Guided by a commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture, this 445-acre property beckons visitors to discover the bounty of nature. There are some 200 plant varietals on the grounds, plus tons of animals. Whether you prefer gathering eggs, feeding pigs or sowing seeds, you’ll find plenty of Arcadian pursuits to fill your time.

Blackberry Farm Walland, Tennessee

Situated on 4,200 pristine acres in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Blackberry Farm is a gastronomic destination, where traditional aggie practices still thrive. Guests are encouraged to participate in foraging excursions, gardening seminars, tasting tours and cooking classes at the acclaimed restaurant. Of course, epicurean delights aren’t the only draw. Horseback riding and archery are also popular.

Hidden Villa Los Altos Hills, California

When you think of Silicon Valley you probably don’t envision the countryside, but maybe you should. Forget high-speed internet and social media — Hidden Villa (a nonprofit educational organization) is a tech-free zone, where roosters replace alarm clocks and the gentle babbling of Adobe Creek lulls you sleep at night. In addition to farm stays, the 1,651-acre land trust hosts after-school programs and summer camps.

Monteillet Fromagerie Dayton, Washington

Monteillet Fromagerie is the first artisanal cheese farmstead in the Walla Walla Valley — although it feels more like France than Washington. Run by Pierre-Louis and Joan Monteillet, the riverfront retreat is a glorious getaway. Rent the gite (French for “holiday home”) and spend a few days soaking in the rustic charm, mingling with animals and mastering the art of hand-ladled chevre.

Taos Goji El Prado, New Mexico

Nestled in San Cristobal, Taos Goji is an organic farm that offers WWOOFers (those are World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms volunteers) and foodies alike a chance to stay on a homestead dating back to the 1880s. Historic cabins are fitted with functional kitchens, bathrooms, wood-fire stoves and eco-friendly linens. Also up for grabs? Real-life lessons in harvesting, adobe brick building, caring for livestock and beekeeping.

Inn at Valley Farms Walpole, New Hampshire

Agrarian enthusiasts flock to the Inn at Valley Farms, part of a multigenerational countryside estate in the fertile Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. Rooms are cozy and comfortable. Free weekly movie nights in the barn enhance the experience. Before you depart, stock up on grass-fed beef, local maple syrup and homemade jams as well as pasture-raised chickens, turkeys, pork and eggs at the farm store.

Mountain Goat Lodge Salida, Colorado

Mountain Goat Lodge is a bucolic farm and B&B in the high desert of Colorado. Visitors get to interact with dairy goats and even bottle-feed kids (depending on the season). More than just cute pets, these critters provide milk for in-house cheese-making. Burgeoning shepherds can take classes on breeding, raising, herding and husbandry.

Agritourism in the US: The Best Destinations for a Haycation

Agritourism is booming right now! Get in on the trend with a trip to one of these haycation destinations in the United States!

awesome travel agriculture

Have you ever heard of Agritourism? It’s exactly what it sounds like, the place in the universe where agriculture and tourism mix. For those of us who grew up on a farm, or near one, the thought of inviting tourists into the daily grind might seem a bit out there. However, agricultural tourism is becoming increasingly popular all over the United States.

While dude ranches have long been serving up the cowboy lifestyle to city slickers, now, farm operators ranging from orchard owners to horse breeders to winery keepers are providing fun and educational farm activities to all kinds of travelers. If you’ve never considered a “haycation,” we’re going to change your mind today as we show you the best agritourism destinations in the United States. Let’s Roam!

Explore Montana with Let’s Roam .

While a great many destinations in the United States offer adventurous haycations, the wide open spaces of Montana are literally created for it! Big Sky Country offers incredible dude ranches, epic mountain adventures, and adorable small towns to explore . At Let’s Roam, we love this gorgeous state, and we’ve created tons of fantastic tours to help you explore it to the finest. Check out our full list of Montana scavenger hunts and add a few stops on the way to your Montana farm stay. From Billings to Helena to dozens of small mountain towns, we’ve got your Montana vacation wrapped up!

Benefits of a Haycation

So, why in the world would you want to spend your vacation on a farm? Well, the benefits might surprise you. Spending some time on a farm, though it’s an everyday reality for the farmer, is a world away from normal life for most of us. It can be an eye-opening experience for the whole family!

At first glance, a farm might not sound like a romantic spot, but you might be mistaken. Many farmers have converted their hay lofts or silos into castle-like accommodations for couples’ getaways. The wide open spaces of rural areas produce the world’s most epic sunsets! Firepits are also par-for-the-course, and long private walks together are easy to come by. You can spend your mornings at the U-pick orchard and your afternoons in a hammock with a view before finishing the evening around a campfire.

2. Natural Resource Education

While each agritourism operation is different, most are very educational. You might learn about how to make cheese or yogurt from fresh milk, the mechanics of tending grapes for the perfect vino, how to maintain soil nutrition by alternating crops, and so much more. From risk management to food systems to humane animal care, the learning opportunities that farm tours provide are varied and quite interesting!

3. Fresh Local Food

While visiting a farmers market, you can take home fresh, organic, foods for your family. Since you’ve already toured the farm and gotten the details of the operation, you can feel good knowing exactly where your family’s food has come from.

4. Fun On-Farm Activities

Touring a farm can be tons of fun! From horseback riding to trying your hand at mutton-busting or calf wrangling, skilled ranchers offer a plethora of exciting adventures on the vast lands. Pumpkin patches often have farm-inspired games for children, hayrides, and corn mazes. Christmas tree farms allow you to choose your own tree, cut it down, and then enjoy a hot chocolate while exploring the extracurriculars, which often include petting zoos, games, or photo booths.

5. Inexpensive Farm Stays

Through agritourism, businesses like Harvest Hosts , van lifers, or those traveling by RV, can make their home in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States for a practically free night. There’s no charge to stay on-site, though it is expected that you’ll do the tasting tour in the winery and purchase a bottle of wine for the evening. It’s not just vineyards either, the Harvest Host system has grown impeccably in the last few years to include museums, breweries, farms, and much more. All are a far better option than the Walmart parking lot!

6. Ignition of New Passions

No matter how hard you try or what rules you set, it’s likely that your kiddos still spend too much time watching a screen. If we’re honest, we as adults probably do as well. Getting out of that habit and trying something new has the ability to ignite a passion for the outdoors. Children are often fascinated by large animals, and certainly by big, fun farming equipment. Visiting a working farm may widen their interests and encourage them to get outside a bit more!

7. A New Perspective

Spending a day in someone else’s shoes, especially a hard-working farmer, often produces a thankfulness for our own lives and a new appreciation for our rural neighbors. Farming is hard, sweat-inducing work, and we often take the meat and veggies in our grocery aisle for granted, never putting thought into the immense process it took to get there. Spending a few days on a small farm changes that perspective.

The Best Haycation Destinations in the United States

In this section, we’ve gathered some exceptional agritourism activities spanning the United States. We have included a varied collection for every different kind of traveler. However, it’s important to remember that the best farm stay might be the one closest to you! If you’re just dipping your toes into this agritourism idea, you don’t necessarily need to plan an entire week at a dude ranch in Montana. Instead, you could spend a Saturday afternoon in a farmer’s market or take a cheese or chocolate-making class at a local farm. The opportunities are endless, and you might be surprised just how close some excellent agritourism initiatives are to your city.

1. Hilltop Hanover Farm: New York

Our first spot may come as a surprise to some of you. For most outsiders, New York is characterized by the glitz and famous activities of its capital. However, most of the state is quite rural, and there are some amazing farming initiatives to explore. Hilltop Hanover Farm is a great place to start. Not only do they produce gorgeous crops from their eight-acre vegetable and herb farm, but they also boast a seriously strong calendar of educational workshops, adult and child-friendly retreats, and a sumptuous farm stand to purchase homegrown flowers or food products.

They do school field trips and internships, and have a thriving educational volunteer program too! From beekeeping to plant identification to a day of foraging and a potluck, you can learn it all at Hilltop Hanover. It’s a one-stop shop for all the best on-farm activities and truly creative educational opportunities.

2. Liberty Hill Farm & Inn: Vermont

A forebearer in the agritourism movement, Liberty Hill Farm has been hosting guests in their charming inn since 1984! This family-run operation consists of three generations of highly educated and experienced experts that not only provide a highly educational experience but a truly warm and welcoming one as well. The farm is pretty famous for Momma Beth’s beautiful, hearty breakfasts, which are included in your accommodation.

The farm includes a herd of 270 award-winning Robeth Holsteins, and a farm visit includes the opportunity to milk the cows, feed the calves, and cuddle with the barn kittens. Aside from helping with the animals, the farm also offers cross-country skiing, wildflower wanders, picking (and eating) your own vegetables, berry picking, hiking, and mountain biking. The farm prides itself on conservation as well. They operate by the family code of “Use It Up, Make It Do, Wear It Out, or Do Without” and try to promote the idea of green agriculture to the wider community.

3. Blackberry Farm: Tennessee

If you think you have to rough it to enjoy the perks of a farm stay, then Blackberry Farm is going to blow your socks off. Not only do they have luxury accommodations, but you can learn to cook in their James-Beard award-winning restaurant after enjoying the full-service on-site spa! The giant farm also includes a brewery, shop, and much more.

Consisting of 4,200 acres of epic Great Smoky Mountain views, the gigantic farm offers an insane array of adventure opportunities. You can paddleboard on the lake, attend Farmstead Field School, practice your archery, go horseback riding, take a mountain biking tour, go fly fishing, tend to your wellness at the spa, or take a forest yoga course. They also host major events throughout the year, including live music in their small theater showcasing the likes of Kacey Musgraves and Emmylou Harris. It’s not the cheapest stay on the list, but if you prefer a little luxury on your getaways, then there is nowhere else quite like Blackberry Farm.

4. Monteillet Fromagerie: Washington State

The first artisan cheesemaker in Walla Walla Valley, Monteillet Fromagerie is the brainchild of Joan and Pierre-Louis Monteillet. After trying their hand at wheat farming on Joan’s family land, they decided traditional French cheesemaking more suited their tastes. Pierre-Louis hails from the Roquefort Region of France, and it’s the traditional techniques from this region the family uses to craft their fabulous array of local cheeses.

The family owns American Alpine Goats and East Freisan-Lacaunne Sheep, as well as chickens, ducks, and pigs. Visitors are allowed to engage with the farm animals and are offered a two-day intensive course in cheese manufacturing including creating, aging, and serving soft cheeses. You’ll make a Feta and at least four more soft cheeses. It’s an informational, fun, and tasty workshop! They also offer a shorter course in French hard cheese. It’s a beautiful farm, run by a beautiful couple.

5. C Lazy U Ranch: Colorado

Did you know that dude ranches come with an all-inclusive option? That’s the case for C Lazy U Ranch anyway. This fantastic operation has been in business for more than 100 years, and it’s at the top of most lists of dude ranch experiences. At C Lazy U, visitors receive luxury Western-themed accommodations, gourmet meals, daily trail rides, and a plethora of outdoor activities.

You can go fly fishing, trapshooting, practice archery, or go mountain biking on the property. Guests also have access to children’s programs and even a special teen club to keep the older kids entertained. It’s won pretty much every award in the book, and you never have to worry about participating because all the activities are included in your one-time booking fee. If you want to try out the ranching lifestyle without all that hard work, this is a great option!

6. Darwin Ranch: Wyoming

For an older and most remote dude ranch experience, let’s head to Wyoming to a more than 100-year-old farm in the stunning Bridger-Teton Forest. Darwin Ranch claims to be the most remote ranch in the Lower 48, and you’ll need to traverse about 25 miles of dirt road to find it. Once there, you’ll have your choice of accommodation in the updated lodge or one of their three cozy cabins. Most of the structures are more than 100 years old, but they have been lovingly maintained and offer all the modern amenities.

On the gigantic ranch, you’ll be treated to horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking, floating, wilderness camping, and specialized hunts in the fall. The ranch and all its operations are run by a mother/son team who is passionate about ranch living and are experts on the region. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn all about their unique Rotational Grazing Program and their Mustang Training Program. If you want a truly off-the-grid experience, then a stay at Darwin Ranch is a must!

7. Hidden Villa: California

Located in Los Altos Hills, CA, Hidden Villa’s education programs have been inspiring students and volunteers for the last 50 years. Hidden Villa is a great place for a day trip. The farm has just a $10 entrance fee. From there, you can explore their 1600 acres in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Participate in wildflower seminars, take on the ropes course, go on a wilderness tour, attend summer camp, or apply for a farm internship! There are so many opportunities at Hidden Villa, and many of them are free to the community. It’s a place you will want to return to again and again!

Potrero Nuevo Farm

Committed to sustainable agriculture, fair accessibility to food and ecological land management.

awesome travel agriculture

Situated in the Tunitas Creek Valley of Half Moon Bay California, our 300 acre farm and wilderness property is one mile from the Pacific Coast.

Building healthy soil that will produce healthy plants is at the core of our farming practices. Crop rotation, cover cropping and organic compost are key tools in our operation. We never spray synthetic chemicals, placing the balance and vitality of the whole farm over any single pest or disease challenge.

Potrero Nuevo Farm provides charitable works in partnership with Abundant Grace Coastside Worker. The Farm donates use of its land, harvest support, seed, use of farm equipment and other materials to Abundant Grace Coastside Worker which feeds the low-income and homeless communities. We are pleased to help further the mission of Abundant Grace Coastside Worker, and also the Farm’s mission of providing healthy produce to charity.

We host a U-Pick Club for local families, an educational program for Pilarcitos High School’s “Coyote Farms Project” and farm tours for community groups.

Potrero Nuevo Farm stretches from rolling pasture to flat fields, with Tunitas Creek running the north border. We have a cool, foggy climate and produce an abundant variety of crops. We are eight miles south of Half Moon Bay and one mile from the Pacific Ocean.

Protected Forever

The productive soils, wildlife habitat, and scenic, rolling pastures of our 300-acre farm are now permanently protected by an affirmative agricultural conservation easement that we executed with Peninsula Open Space Trust ( POST ) on October 29, 2015. The easement does two things: it protects the natural resources of our property and ensures that a portion of the land stays in working agricultural production, for both grazing and row crops. Our farm will always have at least two acres of row crops in production and 100 acres actively grazed. This innovative conservation solution ensures that our vision for Potrero Nuevo Farm is maintained for the local community’s enjoyment and benefit well into the future. Ours was one of the first such agreements created on the Coastside by POST's Farmland Futures Initiative and we are happy to be an early adopter of an easement that will guarantee agricultural land production in San Mateo County. Additionally, we are happy to announce that Potrero Nuevo Farm will eventually pass to POST in our estate plans. POST and we share the same values and long term vision for land conservation and it is a delight to know that they will be there long after we are keeping this property protected and in agricultural production.

Agriculturally Awesome: A Regional Farm Tourism Travel Guide vol.1

The idea behind producing a travel guide was brought about by the opportunity to attract local and foreign tourists to farm tourism sites that offer a relaxing environment and a chance to commune with nature. The Regional Farm Tourism Travel Guide focuses on the synergistic fusion of agriculture and fisheries in the region.

The publication contains the nine (9) DOT accredited Agri-Tourism sites and it showcases the Center's-assisted Learning Sites, School for Practical Agriculture (SPA) and model farms of the Magsasaka Syentista (MS). Furthermore, it serves as a guide to famous delicacies, products, scenic spots, festivals and regional agri commodities produced by the MS of ATI’s FITS Centers. To be able to reach out to agri-enthusiasts and the public, the ATI IV-A and DOT IV-A entered in a Memorandum of Understanding for the production, promotion and distribution of the travel guide. Visiting the farms and sites contained in this publication is a perfect opportunity to bring the consumers closer to the producers, and fully understand the value of their work in providing safe and quality food to the country.

California Robotic Farm Shows Tech Is Changing Agriculture

It’s pretty big news when a totally robotic farm opens up, and that’s what happened recently in the San Francisco Bay Area — San Carlos to be precise, just a few miles north of San Jose.

The story got front-page notice on the San Francisco Chronicle last week:

awesome travel agriculture

In the video below, company co-founder Brandon Alexander states, “We’re able to do the equivalent of 30 acres outdoor farming in just a single acre of our robotic farm.”

Certainly automation promises to make food production more efficient, if not quite the 30 to one improvement claimed here.

Still, when a third of California farmers say they “turning to automation” because of a shrinking labor supply, perhaps it’s time to think different about needing immigrant workers to do the picking because. . .

Automation makes immigration obsolete.

The need for labor is booming now because of Trump’s economy, but that situation will change when smart machines become cheaper than human workers.

U.S.’s first robotic farm opens in the Bay Area , San Francisco Chronicle , October 3, 2018 Angus doesn’t look like your normal farmer. He’s more of a giant, docile rectangle, built to lift 800-pound containers filled with water and seedlings and wheel them over to his partner robot, which looks like a giant arm with twin cameras set next to its gripping fingers. It has taken a San Carlos company named Iron Ox three years to build these two core pieces of technology. As of Wednesday, they’re officially at work at the country’s first robotic farm. Founders Brandon Alexander and Jon Binney met at the influential Silicon Valley robotics lab Willow Garage and quit their jobs in 2015 to dive into the farming world. “Let’s not build robots until we talk to a bunch of farmers,” Alexander said the pair decided. They road tripped all over California, asking farmers what their biggest point of concern was. The answer was clear: labor scarcity. According to  a 2017 survey of 762 farmers conducted by the California Farm Bureau Federation , 55 percent of those polled reported labor shortages, and that figure was closer to 70 percent for those who relied on seasonal workers. Many had raised wages in an effort to attract laborers, but 33 percent of farmers said they were also turning to automation. For California’s $54 billion agriculture industry, change is coming. “Labor-related tasks are kind of a big factor in what’s motivating farmers,” said David Slaughter, head of UC Davis’ Smart Farm Initiative. Many aspects of grain or cotton production have long been automated, but perishables — tree fruits, berries, lettuces — require the human touch. Some robotics research is focused in the area of weeding and pruning, others on harvesting apples or strawberries. In the Salinas Valley, some field lettuce growers have adopted automation in the form of high-pressure “water knives” that move along the rows, cutting the bottoms of the heads and feeding them up to workers via conveyor belts, a process that eases the burden on workers’ backs. Fully articulated robots like the ones operating at Iron Ox are rare. “When it comes to automated, advanced mechanization, and specifically robotics, we’re very early in the game,” said Dennis Donohue, director of the Western Growers Center for Innovation and Technology, an agriculture-tech incubator program.
