Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighboring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travelers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colorful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlors, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts center in Denpasar, travelers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colorful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighboring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 86°F, with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travelers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimize their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewelry, colorful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkeling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to traveling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

• proof of onward or return ticket
• proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
• completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead. 

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re traveling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalize gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however, public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however, if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship. 

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. Indonesia is generally safe for queer travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behavior.

Wanderlands Bali & Lombok - 13 Days

The tour in bali with Wonderlands was a great experience. We saw so many different parts of Bali and got to know the culture of Indonesian people. My favourite day of the tour was definitely the day trip to Nusa Penida because it started with snorkeling and we also saw many popular places of the Island. Another highlight was the surfing lesson because it was very fun to learn something new. One reason why the tour was perfect is that our group leader Stacia always informed us about what‘s going on on the next day. She was always in a good mood and it felt like she is part of the group as a friend. All in all I would definitely recommend the tour and I would wish to do another one with Wonderlands too.

Overall we really enjoyed our 7 day Bali experience, we got to see a lot of different places and explore different parts of Bali, we wouldn’t normally do if we had organised itineraries ourselves. I would recommend doing a cultural Holy Water Sebatu sacred ceremony or even an ATV ride through a cave or waterfall would be awesome! The hotels we stayed at were very accommodating, clean and comfortable, free wifi was a bonus… The Bali Trip Mate tour guides and driver were great and always politely mannered in a professional way. They always went out of there way to help if we needed anything. Yustus and Rocky especially were amazingly exceptional and always made us feel safe-nothing was ever too much for them. The manager Rizal took time out of his day to meet us on our first night at dinner, I thought that was very important, as it made us feel welcomed and not just another number for the tourist statistics. This was my first tour with Intrepid, and it won't be my last. What an absolutely incredible experience. We saw so many cool things, from waterfalls to beaches to volcanoes, not to mention all the awsome people we met along the way. I can't recommend this tour enough. 10 Days The Best of Bali, Gilis and Nusa Penida Island Experience

Great trip, got to see heaps of beautiful places and interesting things that would have been otherwise tricky to organise and plan as a solo traveller. To the uninitiated, Bali might seem just like any other popular tourist destination, but for anyone who visits its shores, it is impossible not to be touched by a certain magic from the 'Island of the Gods' It is an island paradise, with lush rice field terraces, stunning volcano and lake views and beautiful beaches, but it is often the warmth and friendliness of the Balinese people, that make any stay on the island so memorable.

After meeting with your English-speaking guide, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Ubud area in an air-conditioned vehicle. Enjoy a welcome massage in the hotel to relax your body after the long flight to Indonesia and have the remainder of the day to settle in at your leisure.

Begin in the morning with a short lecture at the private house of Bapak Enong Ismail, curator of the Sukarno Museum and the leading expert on the recently-World-Heritage-listed Pakerisan River Area with its ancient temples and monuments.

We would then invite you on an exclusive visit to three heritage temples and monuments that trace the creation of the Balinese Hindu religion "Hindu Dharma" from the 8th to the 12th century, when three religions finally became one. Go back through time as your experienced guides walk you through temples rarely seen by tourists.

We end with a lunch of local favorites, with delicious food ready for you to enjoy, accompanied by rice and traditional side dishes, over good conversations with your friendly local hosts, who will be happy to provide you with further insights into their culture and customs.

The action starts when you launch into an 8-km (5-mile) river rafting experience, navigating through 27 class II and III rapids set to a backdrop of wild unspoiled rainforest, towering gorges and magnificent rice paddy terraces. End the action-packed 1½-hour journey with hot showers, or swimming in the riverside pool of Royal Pita Maha, before lunch at this 5-star hotel owned by the Royal Family of Ubud.

Journey on to Mambal, where a hidden gem awaits the intrepid. Beginning in the afternoon, as the sun slowly sinks over the hills and bathes the area in a dazzling light, visitors will be treated to a sublimely picturesque high tea experience.

In the morning you will visit a Brahman family who live in the village of Mas near the former royal residence and artist town of Ubud. They are all descendants of the holy priests who brought Hinduism to Bali in the 9th century and will welcome you into their traditional Balinese home. There you would have the opportunity to learn about and participate in one of the most unique, yet for Balinese most common, daily activities — the making of the traditional offerings called the canang sari .

After that, a very short drive will bring you to another Brahman house of the pedanda , the high priest of Mas village, where you will see how the larger gebogan (flower, fruit, and cake offering) is carried to the temple to be blessed. A donation is then given with prayers to the ancient family temple that serves around 800 people of the village.

Once all rituals are concluded, the women will take the gebogan back home and the food is shared amongst family and friends — including you. Enjoy the traditional lunch, which includes chicken, rice, sambal (a flavorsome chili paste), and fruits before you say goodbye to your new Balinese friends and return to your hotel.

After breakfast, we would transfer your luggage to your next hotel in Seminyak.

You will be invited to board a vintage Volkswagen car that will bring you to Amlapura, the regency seat of Karangasem District in the east of Bali, where you will arrive at a charming restaurant with scenic views over rice paddies and the majestic Mt. Agung for coffee and refreshments. Then, we drive on to the Puri Agung , the Palace of Amlapura, once the residence of the royal family of Karangasem. An exclusive tour behind the scenes awaits you there, which gives a vivid impression of how local royals used to live.

Continue to Budakling Village, where you will visit a blacksmith whose family makes the traditional blades used for ceremonies. Via scenic back roads along rice paddies and tropical forests, you will reach Tirta Gangga Royal Water Palace, a favorite retreat in the regency of Karangasem, built in 1946.

Next, visit Lontar Museum, showcasing palm-leaf manuscripts inscribed in Sanskrit with spiritual mantras, historical events, or religious lore of ancient Balinese traditions. Witness this ancient skill and try writing your own manuscripts in the traditional way.

Then, explore Taman Ujung Water Palace, the sister site of Tirta Gangga built by the same Raja.

Afterwards, transfer to Seminyak for check-in and a good rest.

In the early morning, you will be driven to Tabanan Regency, where you will meet your local food expert. His cooking class embodies his philosophy of introducing local produce to a wider audience. He has been developing relationships with local farmers and utilizing their produce in his restaurants for years. In honoring these relationships, we would like to invite you to be a part of authentic Balinese life for a day.

Enjoy a morning coffee and briefing at a traditional Balinese House in Belayu, an idyllic village in Tabanan Regency with beautiful rice terraces, lush coconut groves, an old palace, and the authentic laid-back atmosphere of a traditional Balinese village.

Then, hop on your mountain bike and start cycling through the regency's rice terraces, bordered by mountains and rivers, with fresh water flowing through the irrigation system to water the paddy fields.

Upon arrival at the Mengwi morning market, your expert chef will guide you through the traditional market and explain all the different spices, fruits, and vegetables, as well as typical local snacks. Afterwards, you will enjoy a real Balinese breakfast before you continue by car to the chef's private pool villa in Canggu for your hands-on street food experience.

Take part at a short course of how betutu (Balinese spicy chicken) is made before you begin the cooking class with the chef himself, who will lead you through five different Balinese recipes. You can even steal a few secrets from the master as you prepare your lunch together!

Following an invigorating lunch, tasting all the specialties you cooked together, we will transfer you back to your hotel. Optionally, you can choose to spend some additional hours in the villa and relax at the private pool.

Enjoy a leisurely morning relaxing at the beach, or explore the countless shops and boutiques of Seminyak. In the afternoon, you will be transferred from your hotel in South Bali to the famous beach of Jimbaran Bay, where your 2-hour private cruise experience will begin.

Take off your sandals, walk down the beach and hop on a fiberglass speedboat inspired by the local fishermen' boats, capable of mooring in shallow waters. Your captain will sail you through the calm waters by the white Jimbaran beaches and follow the impressive coastline of Bali's Bukit Peninsula to the southernmost end of the island.

Sit back, relax, and soak in spectacular views of the remarkable cliffs of Uluwatu, seen from an angle that even the most avid Bali travelers haven't witnessed yet.

At Uluwatu Temple, seated high above on the cliffs and regarded as one of the most important temples in Bali, join the captain for a traditional Balinese blessing ceremony. You can place a floating canang sari — a small palm-leaf basket filled with colorful flowers, rice, and incense — into the ocean by the temple.

Take a dip in the refreshing water before you slowly cruise back. Explore the beauty of the Indian Ocean as the sun goes down over Jimbaran Bay. Stop for a while during the remarkable sunset's climax to indulge in the color-changing sky and the evening light. It would be the perfect moment to make a toast with your beloved and sip a refreshing glass of champagne (available at additional charge).

Back at the beach in Jimbaran, you will disembark and be transferred back to your resort for a good rest.

History of Bali

Read all about the history of Bali from ancient kingdoms and Dutch rule to the tourist hotspot it is today. 

Although the first testimonies about the existence of Bali appear from the 8th century onwards , it is known that by the end of prehistory the Hindus had already arrived via the Hindustani peninsula.  Java and Sumatra and the presence of Chinese culture are also recorded from the 7th century onwards .

Written documents from the 10th century  speak of a ruling dynasty in Bali , independent of Java . Since then, the histories of Java and Bali have always been intertwined.

Bali was independent until the 13th century  when it became subject to the Kings of Singhasari , a kingdom in Java.

In 1343 , despite resistance from the Balinese, Bali became part of the Javanese Majapahit Empire , which had replaced the Singhasari Kingdom.

At the end of the 15th century,  Bali became independent from Java and in the 16th century, the Kingdom of Gelgel was established in Bali. The King , Dalem Waturenggong , even conquered part of the island of Java.

The 16th century is Bali's Golden Age . The arrival of Islam in Java contributed to its power as it caused a large part of the Javanese aristocracy, intellectuals and artists to emigrate to Bali. Thus, its weight and influence in the region grew and the island became the centre of Indo-Javanese culture .

At the end of the 16th century, an era of instability began;  internal wars gave rise to the birth of numerous kingdoms in Bali.

In 1585 the Portuguese arrived on the island and a few years later, in 1597 , the Dutch . The Dutchman Cornelis Houtman claimed Bali for the Dutch crown and six years later the all-powerful Dutch East India Company arrived on the island, which was involved in the opium and slave trade .

In 1743 the Prince of Surakarta of Java ceded his rights to the Dutch .

In the mid-19th century , the Dutch decided to control the island by force and began their conquest of Indonesia, which they would not achieve until 1908.

In 1942 , during the Second World War , the Japanese army occupied Bali until it was liberated by the Allies in 1945 .

In 1946 the island was occupied again by the Dutch who intended to continue controlling the colony but clashed with the power of Sukarno , who would achieve full independence of Indonesia in 1949 .

Since then Bali has belonged to the Republic of Indonesia .

Today , Bali is a tourist hotspot for its natural beauty and ancient cultural heritage that captivates its visitors.

The Tumultuous History of Tourism in Bali

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Bali? Island of the Gods, surfer’s paradise, stunning beaches, magical temples?

These things are famous in Bali today, and drive people from all over the world to fly thousands of miles for a vacation. Some satisfied tourists even choose to retire there!

But all of this didn’t happen overnight. There is a long history of tourism in Bali.

It took over a hundred years until Bali became the dream destination it is now.

So, why and when did the first tourists come to the island? When did Bali start relying on tourism? Did it change Bali’s landscape?

Get ready to delve deep into interesting history of tourists in Bali!

The History of Tourism in Bali

Bali’s journey to become what it is today took a very long time – hundreds of years!

1597: The First Contact with Foreigners

Balinese locals had their first contact with foreigners after the arrival of some Dutchmen in the late 16th century.

Cornelis de Houtman, a Dutch voyager, explored the island for 30 days. He recorded his journey in a report called Bali Verslag. In the report, he noted his surprised at the acceptance of the Balinese people, which was different from his other travels.

To show respect to the Balinese, he sent Lintsgentsz and Manuel Rodenberch to deliver gifts to the Gelgel Kingdom.

De Houtman left the island, but Manuel Rodenberch and his companion, Yacob Claess chose to stay. They intended to find out more about the Balinese people.

This is when the relationship between the Balinese and Dutch began.

17th to the end of the 19th century: The Ups and Downs with the Dutch

From the 17th century to end of 19th century there was a clash between the Bali rajas (kings) and the Dutch. The history of tourism in Bali isn’t all sunshine and roses.

The imposed Dutch slave trade caused aggression among the Balinese from Buleleng and Karangasem (North to East).

Bali lost the fight, and it triggered a bad relationship between the countries.

It got worse at the end of the 19th century when the Dutch tried to rule and interfere in the internal affairs of the Balinese Kingdom.

In turn, the rajas made it very complicated for Dutch citizens to visit Bali.

To enter, they needed special permission from a local raja which could take months to approve. The number of travelers was limited, and even they made it, the trip would be expensive.

1910: The First Non-Indonesian Family Resides Permanently in Bali

The difficult travel restrictions didn’t last long.

Around 1910, the first non-Indonesian families resided permanently in Bali.

They were mostly Dutch, living in Buleleng and Denpasar.

When the island started to develop better infrastructure like roads, bridges and dams, is when Bali really started to welcome more tourists.

1920s: The Arrival of the First Real Tourists

The 1920s was the beginning of the tourism in Bali. The island only had limited places to stay for tourists – it wasn’t the resort heaven it is now!

The one place to stay was Bali Hotel, now Inna Bali Hotel Denpasar .

It was build in 1927 by Airlines Shipping Netherlands, and was the first international resort. Queen Elizabeth and Mahatma Gandhi stayed there!

It’s fame came from their 20-course meal named rijsttafel or rice table. Rows of dishes were served on separate plates for everyone to grab and share.

1930s: Bali Tourism is Advertised

From tens to hundreds, in the 1930s is when tourism began to thrive!

The Dutch made it popular when they realized that tourism in Bali was very profitable.

The main advertisement showed Bali as an exotic and luxury travel destination. They advertised the temples and rice fields, to bare-breasted Balinese women. Yep, you read that right!

Many tourists came to see, and take photos of the topless Balinese women. Over the decades, the women began to cover up once they saw tourists with cameras.

1940 – 1960s: A Low Point of Bali Tourism

In 1942 Japan occupied Indonesia, known as the Dutch East Indies at the time. The Second World War was also happening, affecting the amount of visitors to Bali.

In 1945, Indonesia finally became independent. The first president, Soekarno, loved Bali and visited often.

Because of his love of the island, he decided to introduce Bali to the world.

He developed the first five-star hotel in Sanur, and the Ngurah Rai airport.

The hotel, now named as Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel, still rent the room formerly occupied by Soekarno. It is on the seventh floor, with a large window facing Sanur beach.

1970s: The Origin of Cultural Tourism in Bali

Young hippies were the typical tourists who came to Bali in the 70s.

This kind of tourist didn’t spend a lot of money, not really contributing to the island.

They didn’t stay in hotels, but with local families in traditional kampungs . They also didn’t eat in restaurants, preferring local food from small warungs .

The Indonesian government started a plan to develop Bali. They wanted to build thousands more hotel rooms, but the plan scared the Balinese people. The locals were afraid that the commercial development of tourism in Bali would ruin their culture.

Balinese culture was seen as a heritage that must be preserved, whereas after the arrival of tourists, Balinese culture turned into a “capital” that must be monetised.

The government created – cultural tourism. And luckily, the tourists loved it!

Visitors came to Bali not only for the beautiful beaches, but also for the mystical temples and other cultural sights.

1980s to 1990s: Negative Impact of Tourism

Cultural tourism in Bali attracted more tourists, which meant more money.

This money was used to take care of their temples, and helped to hold more ceremonies, for tourism’s sake. It wasn’t what the Balinese people wanted.

In the early 90s, they were upset as most of the income was being spent on tourism – even though there were other things to worry about, like healthcare and education.

There were big scandals happening throughout the history of tourism in Bali.

A temple by Sanur Beach needed to be demolished for the development of the Bali Beach Hotel. The temple lord held a mapinunas ritual to ask the Gods.

During the ritual, all the followers fell into a trance, and became unconscious. It is believed as the sign of God’s rage. But demolition still happened.

Another incident happened in 1999 when a beloved Balinese politician didn’t become elected president. Riots took over the streets in Bali, with fires set in order to protest the government. At the time the island wasn’t safe for tourists.

2000s: The Bomb that Shocked the World

As Bali was recovering from the riots, a shocking bombing happened.

It was 2002, and the island was beginning to see an influx of tourists.

Devastatingly, 200 of them were killed tragically in a bomb attack in the tourist heart of Kuta.

Once again, the face of tourism in Bali was smudged. Bookings were canceled, hotels were forced to close, and many upcoming projects were abandoned.

In 2005, another bomb attack. This time, 2 suicide bombers killed 20 people.

2010s: Bali Tourism Recovers

It took nearly a decade for Bali tourism to recover.

By 2011, many new hotels were established ready to accommodate the incoming visitors.

There was also a slight change in the types of accommodation available. Private villas, resorts and hostels stormed the island. Some were built by wealthy Indonesians, while others were owned by expatriates.

Taking over stunning rice fields, with beautiful views, the luxe places to stay had a severe impact. From water supplies to waste problems, the destruction of rice paddies affected the environment.

Sustainable tourism in Bali became a popular concept at this time.

2020: Covid Strikes, Tourism Collapses

Bali tourism has grown for hundreds of years, and became the main source of income for the majority Balinese people. In 2020, 53% of the economy in Bali came from tourism.

When covid struck Indonesia at the beginning of the year, the economy in Bali was dragged down EXTREMELY.

Travel bans and activity restrictions applied not only to locals, but foreign tourists. The unemployment rate exploded from 39,288 in 2019, to 144,500 in 2020.

Through all the negatives, it gave Bali’s nature a much needed break.

2021: Tourism in Bali is Starting to Rise

In the final months of 2021, tourism in Bali started to rise again, but only by domestic visitors.

The national Implementation of Restrictions on Community Activities or PPKM began to loosen up. Hotel rooms and flight ticket prices were very cheap.

There was even an island digital nomad trend of Work from Bali, in addition to Work from Home (WFH) and Work from Anywhere (WFA). The number of Indonesians migrating to Bali for long term stays also rose.

Foreign tourist visits were still minimal, even though Bali had started to open the gates.

Strict policies were said to be the cause of foreign tourists’ reluctance to go to Bali. The policies were related to visas, quarantines, flights, and insurance obligations.

2022 in progress: Welcome Back, Foreign Tourists!

Quarantine exemption polices in April, and the return of Visa On Arrival (VOA) made tourism in Bali start to improve, with foreign tourists eager to get to the island.

Although numbers are still lower than before the pandemic, it is definitely better than 2021!

Now both local and international tourists are beginning to start back with the regular Bali activities and tours.

The recovery of tourism on the Island of the Gods isn’t estimated until 2024 – there is still hope.

How Tourism Changed Bali’s Landscape

Tourism has been a huge part of the evolution of Balinese society for hundreds years. It has brought significant change, especially to the landscape.

The easiest example to see is the decrease of rice fields. They are now replaced by villas, resorts, cafes and restaurants.

It’s happening in almost all areas of Bali. The change encourages modernity and globalization on the island, but the question is ‘is it all worth it?’

For a long time, rice fields in Bali use the Subak system. A traditional irigation unit (that has been registered on UNESCO World Heritage List). But as the number of rice fields decrease, so does Subak.

The existence of Subak is very important for Balinese people. For centuries, Balinese farmers have had easy access to fresh water to irrigate their fields, as well as to drink. Now the privilege is disappearing.

In recent years, it has been reported that residents in the agrarian areas of Bali are having difficulty getting drinking water supplies, especially in the dry season.

Rivers in Bali are also experiencing drought in the recent decade. Even Bali’s largest fresh water source, Lake Buyan, has dropped by 3.5 meters!

The condition is alarming enough, that some experts call it a “water crisis.” So far, the effects of the decreasing supply have only been felt by the farmers close to tourist areas.

Farmers in more rural areas don’t really feel the changes.

Tourism in Bali also generates waste. It is the area with the most waste production in Indonesia.

Every day, waste generated in Bali reaches 4,281 tons, or 1.5 million tons every year.

The Bali government has began to introduce waste management systems, one of which is issuing a policy on plastic waste – you won’t be offered a plastic bag in stores anymore.

Sustainable tourism in Bali has been tested for decades. In early 1987, the Bali Sustainable Development Project was initiated. Till now, more tourist facilities have shown awareness of this type of tourism by providing and facilitating trips with zero-waste.

Bali Hotspots Through the Years

Bali was once a home for locals, now it’s a tourist haven.
