10 reasons why everyone should visit Tenerife at least once in their life

Tenerife is one of the most popular destinations in the world for British holidaymakers. If you’ve visited this incredible island you’ll know exactly why its popularity never decreases. But if you haven’t holidayed there, you might potentially still be wondering what sets it apart from the other popular sun-drenched holiday favourites. We’ve got you covered. Here are 10 reasons why Tenerife should be on everyone’s bucket list!

1. The beaches

While there is more to Tenerife than gorgeous beaches, this is still an incredible part of what makes Tenerife such a popular holiday destination. Even if you visit for a two week holiday, you could still visit a different beach every day. Several of them also boast Blue Flag status for their cleanliness.

2. Dramatic landscapes

The interior landscape of Tenerife is just as spectacular as the coastline. The Teide National Park is home to the third highest volcano in the world, and boasts a number of incredible hiking and walking trails.

3. Whale and dolphin watching

More than 20 species of cetaceans can be spotted off the south-west coast on Tenerife, including baleen whales, killer whales, dolphins, pilot whales and even blue whales.

4. Incredible Waterparks

Tenerife’s most out-there waterpark has to be Siam Park: all Thai-inspired 46 acres of it. Swim in the “largest man-made wave in the world” at about 3.3 metres high, or catch your breath while floating along the Lazy River.

Aqualand Tenerife is also a popular option. It’s home to waterslides of all shapes and styles, as well shallow pools suitable for young children.

5. Cultural events

Tenerife’s largest cultural event has to be the Carnival, held in the week running up to Lent. The celebrations start with the Grand Opening Parade, where colourful floats and costumed performers makes their way through the streets. The Carnival then ends with the (unique) Burial of the Sardine ritual on Ash Wednesday, where a sardine sits on a throne, and is carried through the streets of the capital, before it is set on fire.

6. Clear skies for stargazing

The stars shine brightly in Tenerife, thanks to the island’s close proximity to the equator and low-levels of light pollution. In fact, Teide National Park has been recognised by the Starlight Foundation as one of the premier stargazing sites on the planet.

7. Delicious local food

Tenerife’s culinary scene is an exotic mix of Spanish, Andalusian, African and South American influences. A popular dish on the island is papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), a boiled potato dish with a spicy green pepper sauce. The island is also home to no fewer than six Michelin stars across five restaurants.

8. It’s good for your soul

The volcanic landscape and warm waters of Tenerife aren’t relaxing to look at – spas use the natural resources to literally relax visitors. Natural treatments include thalassotherapy, geotherapy, wine therapy and aloe therapy – the latter using Canarian aloe vera.

9. Year round sunshine

Tenerife’s temperature stays above 20°C in the winter. Plus, there are only about six rainy days a month – so you’re guaranteed good weather no matter when you visit.

10. There’s an incredible range of hotels

Whether you’re looking for a B&B, luxury hotel, or a family-friendly resort – you’ll find it in Tenerife. The island offers a wide range of accommodation options that will make your stay extraordinary, no matter your budget.

New to TTG?

From tenerife to bora bora: my day with barrhead at the height of peaks.

Earlier this year, TTG was invited to join Barrhead Travel on the shopfloor at the height of peaks. Editor Sarah Dennis gamely stepped up to the challenge.

Just my luck – it’s “pay day” Saturday (27 January), tipped to be the busiest day of the year for bookings, so of course this is the day Barrhead Travel chooses for its Back To The Floor day.

More than 30 members of the Scottish independent’s senior management team, plus volunteers from the agent’s supplier partners, are joining teams in-branch to reacquaint themselves with what it’s like to be at the coalface as the nation’s holidaymakers turn out to spend their hard-earned cash.

But there’s one addition for 2024 – TTG .

Approaching Barrhead’s store in Glasgow’s Silverburn Shopping Centre, you can’t help but feel the team – sat poised at their desks – mean business. 

The doors aren’t open to the public yet, but there’s a sense of readiness and anticipation to book customers their dream holidays, having been told about some appointments already in the diary within moments of introducing myself to my new teammates – for the day.

After a rousing speech to his team, encouraging them to just “be yourselves”, the store’s much-loved manager Fraser Hopkins is telling me as he opens the doors to the day’s potential holidaymakers “there’s nothing we can’t do”, when asked what may be out of bounds for the expert team when it comes to holiday options. 

He’s about to explain to me about some of the promotions adorning the team’s desks – Canada, anyone? – when he spots a potential customer transfixed by the digital offers screen outside the store. Within seconds, after politely cutting me off, Hopkins is there, brochure and voucher in hand.

“It’s getting our name out there,” he says of the urgency and the need to show a warm welcome. “A big store can be quite intimidating, that’s why you’ve got to be at the front speaking to people, encouraging them to see what we have to offer.”

My final experience is with team leader Zac Dennis. His clients walk in at 3pm, at which point every desk has a customer. I sheepishly inform said customers of a small wait as Dennis is finishing off a Canada booking. It’s my job to make them tea, by which time they’re sat with him to book their last family break to Majorca before a new addition arrives.

Dennis booked the couple’s honeymoon three years ago when they walked in not knowing what to expect. Since then, four holidays later, he has become their go-to travel consultant and friend. And I’m sure with the family poised to grow, there are many more to come.

As I regretfully leave the buzzing atmosphere on the floor, the team gets the news that Barrhead as a whole has done it – it’s a new record day, the biggest in the business’s history.

For me, it was an equally important day of record as I reflect, first-hand, on the knowledge and professionalism needed to do this job – and how this industry like no other will always turn the dial to go above and beyond for its customers.

New-type toroidally focused ultrasonic flaw detectors, whose application provides an appreciable increase in the flaw detection rate with retention of high sensitivity to flaws, are considered. The construction of a flaw detector is presented, the sizes of a gauge for the formation of the toroidal surface of a lens are given, and the technology of the manufacturing of a toroidal lens is described.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
