Jonas Vingegaard is likely to attempt a third win at the Tour de France 2024

The Tour de France 2024 begins on Saturday 29 June 2024 and marks the 111th edition of cycling's flagship race. In the first Grand Départ for Italy, the race starts in Florence and traces a path east across the country, before heading back west towards France and into the Alps. 

The race also tackles the Apennines, Massif Central and Pyrenees mountain ranges, and passes through Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. This edition breaks from tradition, finishing not in Paris but in Nice, due to the 2024 Paris Olympics. 

The three-week event is the second in the trio of Grand Tours, coming after the Giro d'Italia and before the Vuelta a España .

One for the climbers, the 2024 Tour de France route incorporates four summit finishes, spans four mountain ranges, and features the hilliest opening stage in history. One of the most interesting and intriguing routes of recent years, sitting between the predominantly hilly week one and week three sits a flatter week two, and stage nine - with an abundance of white roads; 14 sectors in total. There's plenty for the sprinters as well as the general classification and climbing specialists, although there are going to be some tough mountains to get over to reach the sprint stages, and to finish the three weeks. For the first time in 35 years, a final day time trial means the yellow jersey won't be decided on the penultimate day.

There will be 22 teams of eight riders at the 2024 Tour de France. This includes all 18 UCI WorldTour teams, as well as the two best-ranked UCI ProTeams, and two further squads invited by the organiser, ASO. 

Tour de France 2024: General classification riders

The general classification riders set to appear on the start line in Florence on June 29 are as of yet unconfirmed.

Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard is extremely likely to be there to defend his title, and there should be no challenges from within the team since Primož Roglič's move to Bora-Hansgrohe. However, Roglič will be making his own bid for the win as the new team leader, with the route suiting him well. 

Following the route announcement in October, Tadej Pogačar said that the "end of the journey makes me smile", with the final 2 stages starting and finishing close to his home in Monaco. Pogačar is hoping to take back the top step in 2024 after two years of missing out on yellow to Vingegaard.

Remco Evenepol intends to make his Tour de France debut in 2024. Although he took a win in 2022 at the Vuelta, his performance in other Grand Tour races has been either inconsistent or blighted by illness. If he's to compete against the likes of Vingegaard and Pogačar, he'll have to up his game. It's not yet known who Ineos Grenadiers will hand the reins to, but, coming 5th overall and taking a stage win in his Tour debut in 2023 , Carlos Rogríguez seems a likely choice.

It's going to be a tough year for the sprinters. Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck was one of the star men of last year's Tour de France, taking four stage wins and the green sprinter's jersey at the end of the three weeks. If the Belgian returns in 2024 then he will definitely be looking to defend his jersey.

Mads Pederson of Trek-Segafredo has won stages in all three Grand Tours and is likely to gain victory again in some of the harder sprint stages in 2024.

All eyes will be on Mark Cavendish in the 111th Tour de France after he postponed retirement to target the Tour win record, currently shared with Eddy Merckx, and gain his 35th win. He said, however, that he was "in shock" and that this was the "toughest course" he had ever seen , when it was revealed in October. 

Tour de France 2024: On TV

As you'd expect the Tour de France will be avialable to watch in a lot of places this July.

The race is expected to be live-streamed on GCN +, Discovery+ and Eurosport , as well as ITV4, in the UK and in Europe. Subscription costs are £6.99/month or $8.99/month, and £39.99 or $49.99 for a year.

Tour de France: The jerseys

Much like every year in recent memory, the Tour de France jerseys and classifications are yellow for the overall leader, green for the leader in the points standings, polka-dot for the mountain classification, and white for the best young rider.

Along with the jersey prizes, there is an award for the most combative rider of each stage, with the winner wearing a red number on the following day. This is awarded each day, with a 'Super Combativity' award decided by a jury at the end of the race for the most active rider throughout the entire event.

There is also a team classification where the time of the first three riders from each team is put together to create a single time. This is then done in a similar way as the individual general classification.

In addition, there are plenty of bonus seconds up for grabs at the race. There are ten, six and four bonus seconds available at the end of each stage for the first three riders, as well as bonus sprints that are dotted throughout the race on key climbs to try and make the racing more entertaining for spectators.

Of course, there's also prize money up for grabs. For winning the 2023 edition of the race, Jonas Vingegaard collected €535,220 (£463,100), a sum which is customarily shared out among the team's riders and staff.

How does the tour de france work.

The Tour de France is one of a trio of races that are three weeks long, known as the Grand Tours, alongside the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. The Tour is the best known and arguably the most prestigious.

It is the second of the three races in the calendar with the Giro taking place in May, the Tour usually in July, and the Vuelta in August and September.

The Tour, like all Grand Tours, takes on varying terrain with flat days for sprinters, hilly days for punchers and mountains for the climbers and GC riders, along with time trials, so that a winner of the race has to be able to perform on all types of road.

The main prize in the race, known as the general classification, is based on time with the overall leader wearing the yellow jersey. The race leader and eventual winner is the rider who has the lowest accumulated time over the 21 days of racing. Riders can win the Tour de France without winning a stage, as Chris Froome did in 2017. Time bonuses of 10, six, and four seconds are given to stage winners though, creating incentive for those general classification riders to chase individual victories and lower their overall time.

In 2020 it took race winner Tadej Pogačar 87 hours 20 minutes and 5 seconds to complete the race with the second-place rider overall 59 seconds slower. That continues all the way down to the last place rider, which was Roger Kluge (Lotto-Soudal) who finished 6 hours 7 minutes and 2 seconds behind.

The white best young rider's jersey is worked out in the same way but only riders under the age of 26 are eligible for the jersey.

The polka-dot mountains jersey and the green points jersey are based on a points system and not time. The only reason time would come into account would be if riders are tied on points, then it would go to who is the best placed in the general classification.

The team classification is based on the general classification times of the first three riders of a team on each stage. The time of those three riders is added up and put onto their team's time, creating a GC list much like in the individual classifications. The leading team gets to wear yellow numbers and helmets on each stage.

The final classification available is the combativity prize. This is decided by a race jury or, in more recent years, Twitter. This takes place just before the end of each stage and often goes to a rider from the breakaway who has put in a daring performance or attempted to liven up the stage by attacking. The winner of the combativity award gets to wear a special red race number on the following day's stage.

There is a final prize added to this with the Super Combativity prize being awarded on the podium in Paris. This is decided in a similar fashion to pick out the most aggressive, entertaining, and daring rider of the whole three weeks. Again, usually going to a rider who has featured regularly in the breakaway.

Stage winners do not wear anything special the day after apart from getting a small yellow jersey to stick on their number on their bike, this can be replaced if they win multiple stages.

Teams used to come to the race with nine riders but the UCI, cycling's governing body, decided that nine riders from each team was too dangerous and dropped it to eight, however more teams now take part.

How long is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France takes place over 23 days with 21 of them being race days. The riders get two days of resting; they usually fall on the second and third Monday of the race.

This year's race is 3,492km long, which is 2,170 miles, around the same distance from Washington DC to Las Vegas, or Helsinki to Lisbon. 

Road stages can range from anything around 100km to something approaching 250km, sometimes more. This year the shortest road stage is stage 20, from Nice to Col de la Couillole, with the longest being 229km on stage three in Italy, from Plaisance to Turin.

Road stages often take around four to five hours with the longer days sometimes nudging over seven hours.

Time trials are always much shorter. Team time trials have long since gone out of fashion in the world of road racing so individual time trials are the main focus these days. 

In 2024, the Tour has two individual time trials for the riders to tackle, the first on stage seven at 25km long from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin, and the second on the final stage from Monaco to Nice, at 34km long.

When does the Tour de France start?

The 2024 Tour de France starts on June 29 in Florence, Italy, with a road stage. There will be three full stages in Italy, before the fourth heads into France. The race finishes in Nice three weeks later.

The 2024 edition of the race runs from 29 June - 21 July, covering 21 stages.

After more than 30 years, a multiday women's Tour de France is back

Bicycle racing's most famous competition, for men, ends Sunday in Paris.

But on the same day, in the same city, another version of the Tour de France begins .

And this one is for the world's best female riders.

It's been more than 30 years since women have competed in a viable, multistage Tour de France. Now they finally have another chance, and it's due, in large part, to the pandemic.

Pedaling to victory at home

With COVID-19 surging in 2020, elite cyclists, pretty much like everyone, were on lockdown.

But for them, as the proverbial door closed, another opened.

The company Zwift , which combines fitness and video gaming for indoor training, put on virtual races worldwide, with separate contests for men and women. Including a virtual Tour de France.

Some pro cyclists rolled their eyes.

"Like, I did not want to ride inside. I thought it was dumb," said American cyclist Lily Williams. "You know it's harder to ride inside because you're just staring at the wall."

Others embraced the chance to break the drudgery of indoor training and maintain a level of competitiveness, albeit virtual.

"I saw the opportunity it presented for us in one of the most challenging years for the world," said Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, a 13-year veteran of women's pro cycling.

It paid off for Moolman-Pasio.

She pedaled to victory in stage five of the 2020 virtual Tour de France, the so-called "queen stage." The toughest stage in a multiday road race.

The next day, Moolman-Pasio and her husband ventured outside their home in Girona, Spain, and noticed people pointing.

"He's like, 'Well, it's because of the Tour de France,' " Moolman-Pasio said. "You know you were on TV and everyone saw you winning the queen stage."

It was not an isolated incident.

Turning virtual racing into reality

According to Zwift, more than 16 million people in more than 130 countries saw the virtual races – on television and digital platforms. And viewership was equally split between the men's and women's events.

Longtime Tour de France organizer ASO — the Amaury Sport Organization — saw in those numbers the potential for women's cycling.

"That's how the conversation started," said Moolman-Pasio.

The conversation with Zwift was about launching a real women's Tour, one with heft and sustainability. A top-notch broadcast plan was critical.

"That's the key to the success of the race," said Kate Veronneau from Zwift, "to building that audience, to building future investment and growing the race and keeping it around."

Veronneau says broadcasting to 190 countries on each of the race's eight days should certainly help keep the new women's Tour de France around.

After so many other Tours had gone away.

Trials, and lots of errors

In 1955, a five-stage loop from Paris to Normandy marked the first women's Tour de France. But it only lasted a year.

It wasn't until 1984 that organizers tried again.

A multistage event called the Tour de France Feminin ran for six years. It featured three wins for French cycling legend Jeannie Longo .

She won the last event in 1989. That Tour folded, like other versions after, because of uneven media coverage and sponsorship.

Both are there now.

Zwift won't say how much money it's poured into its four-year title sponsorship of the Tour de France femmes avec Zwift . But it's enough for about $250,000 in prize money, with $50,000 to the winner.

Finally seeing women

Moolman-Pasio is one of many veteran riders who've fought for a viable women's Tour de France. She's thrilled about finally getting to race in cycling's most prominent event, and about the girls and young women who'll be watching.

"Instead of sitting on the couch and watching the Tour de France and seeing men race up these epic climbs and fighting for the yellow jersey, finally they will see [women]," Moolman-Pasio said. "And it's the opportunity for them to recognize pro cycling as a career choice."

It's still a challenging choice, though.

Many female pro cyclists have to work as well as race.

Williams, the U.S. rider who thought virtual racing was dumb but now likes it so much she sometimes rides inside intentionally, was one of them. She's spent most of her five years as a pro working another job – as communications director for a bike registration network.

But the financial landscape is changing, and finally, Williams is a full time pro.

"This is the first year I've made a full salary from cycling," she said. "Now I actually have the opportunity to just race my bike, which I can't even tell you goes so far because not only is the training and racing incredibly demanding but the travel and the recovery require so much more of you than it did before."

The sport's governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has been raising minimum salaries for women competing on professional teams. Team budgets are growing, as is prize money across the board. After the Tour de France femmes avec Zwift announced its record $250,000 purse, another women's grand tour event, the Giro d'Italia Donne, matched the Tour's prize money amount.

In her short professional career, Williams has won a World Championship gold medal and Olympic bronze in track cycling. She's excited about the upcoming Tour, a hallowed road race she watched every year, with her family, growing up.

A race now for women too.

"I think it's [part of] the general trend we're seeing everywhere," Williams said, "where women are gaining equal opportunity across the board in a lot of different areas of the world. So it's all kind of coming to a head. And I think the Tour de France is going to be such a great opportunity for us to showcase that as well."

Eight, for now

It will be a shorter showcase than the men's Tour.

Women's teams aren't big enough, at least for now, to support a 21-stage Tour de France like the men.

"The top women are more than ready to race three weeks," said Sadhbh O'Shea, a bicycle racing writer for VeloNews. "[But with] a good chunk of these riders working part time to fund their racing, until we can get a full peloton of professional riders, I don't think the women's sport is ready for a full three-week stage race."

But O'Shea thinks the eight-stage race starting Sunday is right for this initial effort.

With so much racing in the men's Tour, "you tend to get these dips in terms of the pace and aggression," O'Shea said. "Whereas with the women's racing, because it's shorter because there are fewer riders, it tends to be a little more gung-ho right from the start and all the way through. You do occasionally get lulls, but it tends to be more action, more of the time."

The women's stages average 80 miles, the men 99.

The action starts Sunday in Paris, before the men arrive for their finish, when the women will own the city streets. Their first stage begins at the Eiffel Tower – 12 laps, or 50 miles later — it ends on the Champs-Elysees. After the city, seven more stages of sprints, grueling mountain climbs and even sections of gravel and dirt roads.

By the end, on July 31, the new women's Tour hopes to finish with new fans, and a promise to be back – year after year.

Stage 1 — Saturday, June 29 Florence-Rimini Distance: 206km (128 miles) Profile: Medium mountain stage

Stage 1: A daunting opener

Last year’s first stage was said by some to be amongst the hardest Tour openers ever; one year later, the organizers have decided to follow the same template.

Indeed they have ramped up the difficulty, with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters, some 500 meters more than last time around. The stage will not so much shake off the cobwebs as evaporate them. Starting in Florence as part of the first-ever Italian Grand Depart in history, the riders will have 30 mainly flat kilometers before the first of seven categorized climbs rear up.

The Col de Valico Tre Faggi is the highest on the stage, peaking at 930 meters altitude after 12.5km of climbing. A breakaway is almost certain to form here and, passing over the subsequent climbs of the Côte des Forche, the Côte de Carnaio and the Colle de Barbotto, should be able to further pad their advantage.

The pendulum may well swing the other way over the three climbs located in the final 50 kms. The last of these, the Côte de Saint-Marino, is followed by 25 downhill and flat roads to the finish in Rimini. Much will depend on how the favorites ride the stage but if the big names and their teams go all in, a very difficult first day is in store.

The stage finish is a poignant location for Italian cycling. The 1998 Tour de France winner Marco Pantani died in Rimini in 2004, with this year’s Tour taking place 20 years after that tragic event.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “It’s rare for the Tour de France to start with more than 3,600 meters of climbing — in fact it’s never happened before! — and it’s also the first time that the race has visited the home city of Gino Bartali.

“The succession of hills in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are likely to be the setting for an immediate and testing confrontation between the contenders for the title, particularly the climb into San Marino (7.1km at 4.8 percent), where the race will add a 13th name to its catalogue of foreign visits.”

Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the yellow jersey as the overall winner of the 2023 Tour de France. The 26-year-old won the Tour for the second straight season, becoming the 21st rider in history to win the race multiple times. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), another two-time TdF winner, finished second for the second straight season, 7 minutes, 29 seconds behind Vingegaard. Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates teammate Adam Yates was third overall, 10 minutes, 56 seconds behind the winner, to round out the podium of the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at how the General Classification played out in every stage of the 2023 Tour de France.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) officially won the 2023 Tour de France after safely finishing Stage 21 on Sunday, July 23. For the second straight year, Vingegaard was the top General Classification rider at the Tour. This time, he beat second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:29, the largest margin of victory in the GC since Vincenzo Nibali won by 7:37 in 2014.

Vingegaard first claimed the yellow jersey after Stage 6 and never relinquished it. He led by 25 seconds over Pogačar at that point, but Pogačar slowly but surely cut into that advantage. That is, until Stage 16, when Vingegaard rode a brilliant time trial to drive his lead over Pogačar to 1:48. The next day on Stage 17, Vingegaard further solidified his lead after Pogačar cracked in the high mountains, driving Vingegaard’s lead well past seven minutes. He held that lead through the finish in Paris on Sunday. Pogačar, meanwhile, won the white jersey as the best young rider (25 years or younger) in the Tour de France. He wins white for a record-breaking fourth time.

Pogačar wasn’t the only UAE Team Emirates rider on the podium. Adam Yates, who held the yellow jersey from Stage 2 through Stage 5, finished third overall, 10:56 behind the leader. His twin brother, Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), finished fourth overall, 12:23 back. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was fifth, 13:17 back.

Vingegaard finished second on Saturday’s Stage 20 with the same time as his top rival Tadej Pogačar. Pogačar claimed the stage win, but will have to settle for second to Vingegaard for a second straight year. This year, Vingegaard holds a 7 minute, 35 second advantage on Pogačar.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) remains in third overall, 10:56 back of the yellow jersey to get the final podium spot. His twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) moved up a spot to fourth on Saturday. He’s 12:23 back of the lead. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) rounds out the top five, losing a spot on Stage 20 after crashing early in the stage. He’s 12:57 behind the leader.

Thursday’s stage was a day for the sprinters (even though the breakaway managed to barely survive), so there were no changes as far as the GC situation. Stage 18 comes a day after Vingegaard solidified his spot atop the yellow jersey standings.

Vingegaard leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in third, 10:45 behind the leader, and Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) is in fourth, 12:01 behind. With three stages to go, Vingegaard surely can taste his second straight Tour victory.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France, furthering his advantage on Stage 17. Vingegaard now leads second place Tadej Pogačar by 7 minutes, 37 seconds after leading by just 10 seconds two stages prior. Pogačar cracked in a big way on Wednesday, losing major time, while Vingegaard excelled once again in the mountains to gain massive amounts of time on his closest rival and pre-Tour co-favorite.

Vingegaard made major gains during the Stage 16 individual time trial, and then on Wednesday he delivered a virtual punishing blow to Pogačar’s yellow jersey hopes. It seemed during the Tour’s second week that Pogačar had a slight upperhand on Vingegaard. But it wasn’t to be as the defending champion through down his time trial and then big mountain ride on consecutive days. That changed the Tour from one of the closest of all-time to the largest leading margin since 2014.

There are four stages still remaining, but barring something completely unexpected, Vingegaard will win the Tour de France once again by the end of the day on Sunday.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the General Classification of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 16. Vingegaard extended his hold on the yellow jersey on Tuesday on an individual time trial. The maillot jaune crushed the ITT, winning the stage by 1:38 and extending his GC lead to 1:48 over second place Tadej Pogačar, his top rival.

Vingegaard was magnificent on the time trial, putting time into Pogačar from the start all the way to the finish. It’s the first time this Tour that one of the co-favorites put a major amount of time into the other, as Vingegaard has firmly asserted himself as the one to beat over the remaining five stages.

Elsewhere in the GC battle for the podium, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up from fourth to third place in the standings. Yates supplanted Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) after the time trial. Yates, Pogačar’s teammate, is 8:52 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard. Rodriguez is now in fourth place, 8:57 behind Vingegaard. Just five seconds separates Yates and Rodriguez, so it should be an exciting matchup between those two for the third and final podium spot in the GC.

Stage 14 only saw a change of one single second among the two leaders, Vingegaard and Pogačar, but that didn’t mean there weren’t plenty of fireworks. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow jersey as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. But the gap between the defending champion and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has narrowed after the Slovenian, winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021, attacked and then gapped the Dane about 400 meters from the top of the “Beyond Category” Col du Grand Colombier at the end of Stage 14.

Pogačar crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and in doing so finished third on the stage to take a 4-second time bonus, which cut Vingegaard’s overall advantage to just 9 seconds. With two days in the Alps before Monday’s rest day, expect more fireworks as these two continue their intense fight to win the 2023 Tour de France.

A little less than a minute before the reignition of the Tour’s GC battle, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers) won the stage after spending all day in the breakaway and attacking what was left of it on the lower slopes of the Grand Colombier. A super-domestique with an impressive resume of his own, the 33-year-old proved too strong for UAE Team Emirates to catch, holding-off Belgium’s Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Soudal) and then Pogačar to take the second Tour de France stage victory of his career.

The stage finished atop the Hors Categorie (“Beyond Category”) Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano rising above the Massif Central that the Tour hasn’t been climbed by the Tour since 1988.Canada’s Mike Woods (Israel-PremierTech) won the stage.

The former world class distance runner paced himself perfectly from the base of the climb, catching multiple riders left from the day’s big breakaway on the way to his first Tour de France stage victory. France’s Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) finished second, and Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) finished third. But the battle to win the Tour’s General Classification took place over eight minutes later, as Vingegaard and Pogačar continued their duel on the climb’s upper slopes.

Jumbo-Visma did a terrific job of whittling down to the yellow jersey group, but it was Pogačar who took advantage pulling away from Vingegaard about 1,400meters from the summit finish. Vingegaard only lost 8 seconds to the Slovenian, but heading into the first rest day, he now leads the Tour by just 17 seconds. The race to win the 2023 Tour de France is far from over.

After Vingegaard dealt a major blow to Pogačar on Stage 5, Pogačar roared back to capture the stage win and prove that the GC is not over yet. Despite Vingegaard moving into the yellow jersey, Stage 6 was much more defined by Pogačar gaining time on Vingegaard than the changing of the guard in the leader’s jersey. It seemed after Stage 5 that the defending champion Vingegaard was clearly the strongest rider in the peloton once again, but Pogačar, a two-time Tour champion in his own right, showed us that it’s a long way to Paris and it could be a fierce battle all the way to the end.

Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after a brilliant win on Stage 5. Hindley leads the General Classification by 47 seconds (thanks in part to 18 seconds worth of bonuses picked up on Stage 5) over second place overall Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek) is 1:03 back in third overall and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in fourth overall, 1:11 back.

The yellow jersey holder for the first five stages, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) lost the lead on Wednesday and is now in fifth overall, 1:34 back of the lead. Tadej Pogačar, the co-prerace favorite along with Vingegaard, lost time on Stage 5 and is now in sixth place overall, 1:40 behind the leader Hindley. Vingegaard is 53 seconds ahead of Pogačar.

Stage 5 saw some major GC shakeups. Hindley, the 2022 winner of the Giro d’Italia, sits in yellow with a solid 47-second advantage over Vingegaard. With a grand tour win already under his belt, Hindley has a chance to stay in yellow for a while. Of course, a lot of that depends on the race tactics of Vingegaard and Pogačar, who may likely spar again on a mountainous Stage 6.

Cycling star Evenepoel targets June return from crash ahead of Tour de France and Paris Olympics

BRUSSELS (AP) — Two weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said on Friday he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”

What roads will be closed during today's Greenville Cycling Classic? What you need to know

Tour de France veterans George Hincapie, Bobby Julich, and Christian Vande Velde will take a 20-minute ride alongside other cyclists at the Greenville Cycling Classic , presented by Prisma Health, today at One City Plaza.

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie will ride alongside the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Beginning at 3 p.m., men's and women's professional and amateur cycling will occur along Main and Coffee Street. Bike races will continue through 9 p.m. to determine a winner in nine divisions, ranging from 30-minute rides to a 70-lap competition.

This race is part of the Speed Week race series, with nine races in South Carolina and Georgia.

Who is George Hincapie?

Hincapie is a former professional racing cyclist who competed alongside Lance Armstrong as his domestique or assisting rider on the U.S. PostalPro Cycling Team. He is also known for helping Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans to their first Tour de France victories in 2007 and 2011.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, still the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.

How do I attend the Greenville Cycling Classic?

The racing path will expand between East North Street, East McBee Avenue, South Laurens Street, and South Brown Street.

What roads will be closed during the race?

Road closures for the event will be in place from noon to 11 p.m. on April 25.

They will include:

  • East North Street, from North Main to Brown Streets
  • Brown Street, from East North Street to McBee Avenue
  • McBee Avenue, from South Brown Street to South Laurens Street
  • South Laurens Street, from West McBee Avenue to West Washington Street

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. From 8 May to 26 July 2024, the Olympic Flame will embark on an incredible cultural and festive journey across mainland France and its overseas territories: the Olympic Torch Relay. Along the way, it will be highlighting France's heritage, the diversity of its landscapes, its know-how, its talents and its innovations. And, of course, sport! There will be more than 60 stops along the way, all of which will be opportunities to get together and celebrate the values of Olympism before the big event gets under way. Let's find out more about the stages of this incredible relay that you won't want to miss!

It all begins in the port of Marseille on 8 May 2024. After a long crossing aboard the Belem from Piraeus in Greece, the Olympic flame will set foot on French soil for the first time in the Cité Phocéenne, which was once a Greek colony. The flame, which embodies an ideal of peace and friendship between peoples and refers to the Games of Antiquity, will then head for Toulon via the splendid Almanarre beach and the salt route at Hyères .

The Relais de la Flamme will then head for Manosque, with a stopover in Sisteron and its famous citadel, as well as the Verdon regional nature park , famous for its Sainte-Croix lake and its famous gorges.

From Provence to Occitania via Corsica

The flame will then make a stopover in Arles before crossing the Mediterranean again, this time heading for Corsica, not forgetting to admire the impressive Aiguilles de Bavella along the way. Back on the mainland, the Relais will take on the famous Millau Viaduct , a true architectural feat, before climbing Mont Canigou in the Pyrenees. After a well-earned break in the medieval city of Carcassonne and a stopover in Toulouse , the flame will strap on the crampons again, heading for the Cirque de Gavarnie and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Then it's off for a well-deserved rest on the beaches of Biarritz , in the Basque country.

On 22 May, the Torch Relay will explore the Lascaux Cave , in the Dordogne Valley, before heading for Bordeaux, its wine city and the vineyards of Saint-Emilion.

Châteaux, vineyards, beaches and monuments

After a stopover in Cognac , the flame will set off again for Angers, determined to discover the Château de Montsoreau and the Coteaux-du-Layon vineyards in the Pays de la Loire . Then it's on to Normandy, Honfleur and the D-Day landing beaches before tackling the sacred monster: Mont-Saint-Michel.

The Flame tour kicks off in June in Brittany, in the Brocéliande forest , with its fairytales and legends. Rendezvous on 5 June in the bay of La Baule, on the Atlantic coast , before heading for the aptly named Pointe de la Torche in Brest, Brittany, from where the Flame will embark on the Relais des Océans across the French Overseas Territories.

First stop: Cayenne and the Kourou space centre in French Guiana . Then on to Reunion Island, where the Plaine des sables, the Cité du volcan and the pointe de Langevin are on the programme. In Tahiti, the flame will pay a visit to the famous Teahupo'o wave, well known to surfers, which will be the setting for the surfing competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The torch tour will then head to the Guadeloupe Islands and in particular Pointe-à-Pitre to visit the Act Memorial. This Relais des Océans will finish in Martinique where the flame will admire Mount Pelée before setting sail again for the Côte d'Azur.

From the Mediterranean to the Alps

On 18 June, she will be performing in Nice, Antibes and at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes . Then on to Avignon, the ancient theatre of Orange and the Mont Ventoux, well known to Tour de France fans. On 21 June, the flame will be in Vichy , in the Auvergne, before moving on to the Alps, on the shores of Lake Annecy and the Mont-Blanc Valley.

The Château de Versailles, the Place de la Concorde and the Alexandre III bridge, as well as the legendary Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne, the Marina de Marseille and the latest-generation aquatic centre in Saint-Denis... From Paris to Tahiti, via the regions, 39 Olympic venues will be hosting the competitions of the Paris 2024 Games in France. From the most legendary to the most eco-responsible, follow the guide!

There's a change of scenery, with the torch arriving in Strasbourg, Alsace, on 26 June. After a stopover at the Meisenthal glassworks and the Verdun memorial, it's off to Champagne, where the flame will be strolling down the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay, famous for its famous wine cellars . On 2 July, the route heads for the Hauts-de-France region, with a stopover in Lille and at the Louvre-Lens . Then on to the coast and the Baie de Somme.

On 5 July, back in Normandy, the flame will visit Rouen Cathedral before heading for Chambord Castle in the Loire Valley. After passing through Orléans, it's off to Burgundy! Vézelay, the vineyards of Chablis, Dijon, the Clos de Vougeot ... that's a promise!

Ten days in and around Paris

On 14 and 15 July, as part of the bank holidays, the flame will make its first stop in Paris, with the Place de la Bastille, the Hôtel de Ville and the Assemblée Nationale on the programme. That's it! The flame will then travel to the Cité Internationale de la langue française in Villers-Cotterêts, before visiting the châteaux of Chantilly, Fontainebleau and, of course, Versailles! On 25 July, for its final stopover, the flame will be in Seine-Saint-Denis. Make your way to the canal de l'Ourcq, the Olympic aquatic centre in Saint-Denis and the Parc Georges Valbon in La Courneuve, which will host a large area for celebrations during the Games.

The Torch Relay will end in Paris on 26 July. There, the flame will light the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony , which will finally mark the launch of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) crossed the line safely on the final stage of the 2023 Tour de France, celebrating his second overall victory in a row well behind the peloton with his teammates.

Because of rain, officials called the time for general classification with one lap to go on the Champs Élysées, and the final gaps in the standings remained the same after stage 21 .

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) was more active in the proceedings, going on the attack then leading out the sprint and then celebrating second overall at 7:29. He was also the race's best young rider.

Adam Yates gave the team two on the podium in third place overall at 10:56, claiming his first Grand Tour podium.

His identical twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) finished the race in fourth at 12:23.

Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) finished the race despite his heavy crash on the penultimate stage to land in fifth at 13:17.

There were no changes for sixth to eighth place, in order,  Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) at 13:27, Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) at 14:44 and second on stage 20, Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën) at 16:09.

Rounding out the top 10 are Groupama-FDJ’s  David Gaudu (ninth at 23:08) and Cofidis’ Guillaume Martin (10th at 26:30).

American Sepp Kuss (jumbo Visma) who was involved in the same crash as Rodriguez, finished in 12th overall.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) lost the stage to Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) but could be consoled with a dominant performance in the Tour's green jersey competition.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) took the last points on offer, while Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) was awarded the most combative rider prize.

Yellow Jersey/Maillot Jaune – The yellow jersey is worn by the overall race leader on the general classification who has completed the stages so far in the lowest accumulated time.

Green Jersey – The green jersey is the points classification. Riders accrue points at one of the two intermediate sprints during stages and also at stage finishes, and the man with the most points leads the ranking.

Polka Dot Jersey – The red and white polka dot jersey is the mountain classification. Points are handed out to the first riders over certain hills and climbs during the Tour de France, with the hardest mountains giving the most points. Once again, the man with the most points leads the ranking.

White jersey – The white jersey is the best young rider classification. It works the same way as the yellow jersey, but only riders aged 25 or under are eligible to win.

Spotted on Strava: We don't want to discourage the Giro peloton, but these are Tadej Pogacar's numbers

Will the Giro d'Italia be a mere formality ? If Tadej Pogacar encounters no obstacles and reaches Rome unscathed, the entire cycling world may think so. This might be true, but considering that the Giro is only part one of UAE Team Emirates' master plan, Pogacar's debut in the Italian race is bound to be immensely interesting. How will Pogacar ensure he performs at his peak in Italy as well as in the Tour de France? IDLProCycling.com delved into his 2024 numbers to collectively marvel at his racing data...

In a spring dominated by discussions about Mathieu van der Poel's limited race days, Pogacar still managed a commendable second place. While the world champion in Liège-Bastogne-Liège completed his seventh race day of 2024, Pogacar only saw action for the tenth time at Liège. Thus, the two most successful riders of the year's early months have proven that the adage "less is more" was coined for a reason. The burning question ahead of the Giro d'Italia: How impressive was Pogacar in the races he did participate in? It's time for an in-depth analysis of Pogacar's Giro-Strava data!

And how well he fared! Strade Bianche 2024 etched itself into the history books as never before had anyone dared to break away more than eighty kilometers from the finish line and solo to victory in Siena. It all began on the Monte Sante Marie ascent, 11.49 kilometers in length with two monstrously steep climbs nestled within. UAE-Team Emirates upped the pace, launching their leader in the process, and amidst a hailstorm, the Slovenian forged ahead. When he glanced back, not a soul was in sight.

This came as no surprise, considering Pogacar's extraordinary effort on Monte Sante Marie. He conquered the entire stretch in just 19 minutes and 8 seconds, averaging an impressive 36.0 kilometers per hour and securing a remarkable Strava-KOM. Tom Pidcock accomplished it a year earlier during his victory in 20 minutes and 12 seconds, which would have been over a minute slower than Pogacar's time now. And all this despite fierce conditions and heavy rain in the preceding days, rendering the route slick and treacherous.

During his 80-kilometer solo breakaway, Pogacar eventually widened his lead to 2.44 minutes over the runner-up. As the race neared its conclusion, he even had time to celebrate, exchanging fist bumps with fans and smiling for the cameras. His entire solo escapade averaged an impressive 38.9 kilometers per hour, conquering the toughest terrain of Strade Bianche 2024 with ease. Any suggestions that the rest of the field didn't give their best or weren't up to par in terms of performance level are unfounded. Maxim Van Gils posted the third fastest time ever on Monte Sante Marie, but even that was no match for Pogacar's dominance.

"I tried to attack twice because I had incredible legs," Pogacar said after Milan-Sanremo, a week following his victory in Tuscany. However, he couldn't shake off the competition on the Poggio, and so it was Jasper Philipsen who claimed victory, not him. Milan-Sanremo is not dubbed the hardest race to win for nothing, as Pogacar, despite his strong performance, demonstrated three days prior to La Primavera .

He tackled the Poggio in 5.25 minutes at an average speed of 40.2 kilometers per hour, six seconds faster than the fastest time during the actual race. Pogacar's training ride even garnered attention on Strava, labeled under the heading: 'this can't be true.' Additionally, Pogacar also ascended the Cipressa midweek during training, clocking several seconds faster than in the race on Saturday. Of course, this was a 132-kilometer workout, not the actual 288-kilometer race.

During the race, Pogacar struggled to maintain his position, partly due to UAE-Team Emirates' faltering performance as a team on the Cipressa, and Mathieu van der Poel's formidable strength on the Poggio, preventing any significant breakaways. However, aided by a tailwind, all the King of the Mountain records were shattered: on the Poggio climb, the climb plus descent, and Pogacar even achieved a personal best in the downhill segment. Despite this, it wasn't enough, and the UAE leader will undoubtedly need to work even harder to outperform the competition in the years to come.

The day after Milan-Sanremo, Pogacar traveled to Catalonia for a seven-day stage race. Perhaps it was the transition, but in the first stage, he allowed Nick Schultz to take the lead. However, of the remaining six stages, Pogacar went on to win four. A notable performance came on day two, with the finish at Vallter 2000: 12.05 kilometers at an average gradient of 7.7 percent, completed in the freezing cold in just 30 minutes and 47 seconds. This was a remarkable 27 seconds faster than the Strava-KOM holders Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic, and stage winner Giulio Ciccone achieved in 2023.

He repeated his success a day later at Port Ainé, this time covering 18.29 kilometers at a gradient of 6.5 percent. Despite a bold attack by Mikel Landa, Pogacar countered and powered on solo. The old Strava-KOM set by Michael Woods in 2021 was 47 minutes and 40 seconds. However, since the Tour of Catalonia, the new Strava-KOM stands at an impressive 46 minutes and 2 seconds.Cuckoo!

The highlight of the week came not on day two or three, but undoubtedly on day six. Despite already holding a 2.27-minute lead, Pogacar showed no signs of slowing down. After setting a fresh Strava-KOM (duhuh!) on the Coll de Pradell, Pogacar left everyone trailing behind on the Collada Sant Isidre. He stormed away on a climb of just under five kilometers, opening up a lead of nearly a minute. This lead remained intact until the finish line. On the final day, he sealed his quartet of victories with a sprint finish in Barcelona.

The culmination of an impressive spring occurred last Sunday in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Similar to Catalunya, he had never won that race either. The manner in which he conquered La Doyenne was once again truly remarkable. UAE-Team Emirates controlled the race throughout the day, accelerating at strategic moments and launching their leader on La Redoute. In just four minutes, Pogi reached the summit, with no one even close to his wheel.

Although he didn't immediately break any Strava records, one still stands with Jarno Widar holding a one-second advantage. However, whereas Widar's pace slowed after the top of La Redoute, Pogacar actually gained most of his time in the stretch following it. Similar to Remco Evenepoel's performance in 2023, including the climb of Cornemont. Pogacar was six seconds faster than Evenepoel on that segment a year earlier. More significantly, Pogacar was approximately three-quarters of a minute faster there than his closest pursuers.

What ensued was another solo effort, this time spanning approximately 35 kilometers. He powered through the finale at an impressive average speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour, ultimately finishing ahead of the runner-up, Romain Bardet, by 1.39 minutes. This was a definitive statement ahead of the Giro d'Italia, where Pogacar will commence in better form than ever. On Strava, he didn't share data from all the training days completed between his 10 race days. This might be advantageous for the competition in the Giro as well, so as not to discourage them too much.

Pogacar wins Liege with epic solo break, launching bid for Giro d’Italia and Tour de France

Tadej Pogacar won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege bike race on Sunday thanks to a solo break 30km from home launched on a steep climb and sustained to the finish line.

Ahead of Pogacar 's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double bid the 25-year-old Slovenian blew the opposition away with a maverick acceleration that none could answer on the 254km race in the Ardennes forests that marks the end of the spring classics.

Billed as a duel between Pogacar and winner of Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders Mathieu van der Poel, the Dutchman came in a commendable third but was far from going shoulder-to-shoulder for the title.

Frenchman Romain Bardet was second, also solo 1min 39sec off the pace with Van der Poel leading a bunch home at 2min 02sec.

Another pre-race favourite was Briton Tom Pidcock, who was 10th on the day after a mechanical problem at a key moment hindered his day.

The win puts to bed Pogacar's fall here last season that broke his wrist and blighted his Tour de France bid.

"It was an emotional day of riding for me," a drained-looking Pogacar said.

"Not just because of my hand but also because two years ago just before the race Urska's mother died, so I was riding for her today," Pogacar said referring to his professional cyclist partner Urska Zigart.

Pogacar also won here in 2021 and this was his sixth one-day Monument win with three wins at the Tour of Lombardy and his 2023 Tour of Flanders triumph.

Champion Remco Evenepoel, former winner Primoz Roglic and Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard would all have been suited to this course but are injured after a mass fall at the Tour of the Basque Country.

Pogacar came into the race fresh from altitude training and at the start line said he had "no regrets about not racing la Fleche", referring to the frozen and drenched midweek race in the same region.
